Lakeland Donates Air Ambulance Training Prop To Alberta Air Ambulance Lakeland College Submitted A training prop that simulates the size and motion of an aircraft will soon be used by personnel with Alberta Health Services, Emergency Medical Services (AHS EMS) Provincial Air Ambulance program thanks to a donation from Lakeland College. Lakeland employees built the prop from the fuselage of a King Air 200, an aircraft commonly used as a fixed wing air ambulance. The

prop was used by students in Lakeland’s paramedic program which was offered primarily online with onsite training days in Camrose. The last cohort of paramedic students graduates this year so Lakeland College officials donated the training aid to AHS EMS. “We are not aware of any other training facility in Western Canada that has a fixed wing training prop. Rather than decommission it we decided to donate it to AHS so people working in pre-hospital care can continue to benefit from this specialized train-

ing tool,” says Chris Senaratne, dean of Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. “The prop was intended for student education and development and it will continue to be used in that exact capacity within Alberta Health Services EMS. The fuselage will become part of our Air Ambulance and Emergency Medical Services patient care simulation program,” says Gordon Bates, interim executive director for Provincial Air Ambulance. Thanks to a hydraulic system, the prop can replicate various aircraft motions including

take-off, landing, and air turbulence.

“It’s great for practicing safe patient care during flight as well as loading and unloading patients in tight surroundings,” says Senaratne.AHS EMS intends to outfit the prop with additional equipment so their staff can practice a variety of in-flight scenarios. The prop will be housed at the AHS Air Ambulance Operations facility located near the Edmonton International Airport, but it can be transported to other sites as needed.

Ian added a commitment for his company to provide (starting in September 2014) quarterly live video learning sessions to add to the continuous leadership learning of alumni participants.

There will also be an option in the fall for obtaining a DVD of the program for those with rural internet difficulties. Those who haven’t yet registered (there are no fees) can still do so at www.register14s. becomingacommunitybuilder.ca. You can work at your own pace to complete the 15 weeks of leadership training.

Currently we have 129 registrants in the program with many completing the program this month.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted The grade 5 students went on their field trip to the TELUS World of Science in Edmonton on June 19. Upon arriving they had a chance to visit a few galleries. They then attended the IMAX film – ‘Forces of Nature’, which was about earthquakes, volcanoes, and tornadoes.

This was followed by a bagged lunch from home eaten on the Science Stage. The two classes then split up and attended an Electric Car Garage session. Each student got to make a simple electric car to take home. It was great to have so many parents attend.

On June 20, the grade 3 students traveled “back in time” when they visited the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. It is an open-air museum that depicts the history of the Ukrainian immigrants who settled in this region. Students enjoyed visiting the one-room school house, grocery store, fully-functioning elevator, blacksmith house, and RCMP station along with many other businesses in the town site. Over thirty historic structures have been relocated to the museum, restored and furnished, then staffed by costumed role-players who re-enact the historic routines and activities associated with that household, institution or business.

VES’s Track and Field Day was held on

June 24, which was one of the few nonrainy days in June. The day went very well as the kids took part in all sorts of running, jumping, and throwing events.

We appreciate all the volunteer help that made this day a success.

June 25 was a busy day for field trips at our school. All grade 2 and 3 classes went to the Provincial Park. Each group had fun at the splash park. Grade 3 students took a nature hike and scooped some pond samples that included leeches, snails and a tiny crayfish. Unfortunately, both grades came back early because of the rain. The grade 4B and 4C classes went bowling in the morning and the 4As went in the afternoon. They also got wet from walking to and from the bowling alley, but had a terrific time while they were there.

We had our last assembly for the year on June 26. Mrs. Webb made introductory remarks saying that we have “amazing volunteers in our school” and that she is “proud of the VES family”. We then recognized all the following students and staff in clubs/committees: Mrs. Doherty, Mrs. Myshaniuk, Ms. Ishaq and Mrs. Zaharko had 22 students in drama club; Mrs. Bauer had 12 students in hand bell choir; Mrs. Stachniuk, Mrs. Myshaniuk, and Mrs. McCullough recognized 27 students in triathlon; Ms. Birch had 31 in art club; Mr. Haslehurst and Mr. Faull were in charge of 12 school patrollers; Mr. Faull had 28 in the Klondike Relay after school practice group; Mr. Harvey and Mr.

Beecroft had 37 in the milk monitor club; Mr. Beecroft and Mrs. Seymour had 29 play basketball; Mrs. MacMillan had 36 library club members; Mrs. Tomkins and Ms. King recognized 14 friends committee members; 31 students came out for volleyball with Mrs. Stachniuk, Mr. Faull, and Mrs. Ward; 16 students in VIBE advisory with Mrs. Ward; Mrs. McCullough had 16 in her cross country running club; 18 students came out for the track and field club with Mr. Faull; and Mrs. Moses organized 38 kids to be curling helpers and 60 kids to be hot lunch helpers. This is a total of 427 students, plus, there were

hundreds of children who participated in the various intramural events led by several staff members. That’s phenomenal participation, VES. Much Needed Downtime Karen Nedzielski Editor

With the longest day of the year now behind us and schools in the area closed for the summer, vacation season is here and many people are packing up to head to the many lakes and favourite campgrounds to enjoy some much earned downtime.

After what seems like a never-ending winter, the warm summertime hot spots are a welcome sight for those looking to getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Some people look for the long-distance vacation spot to make sure they are far

enough away from their jobs and the pressures surrounding them. Some stay a little closer to home and find solace in the neighbouring campgrounds.

I have always been the type that enjoys being at home as my jobs have always kept me away from our farm for a good portion of my time. I am quite content to just putt around home on my time off.

Last week I made the trek to the mountains north of Grande Cache to attend a horse training clinic that I have always wanted to attend.

Horses have always been my passion and with a recent gift of a young horse from my “favourite Uncle Jim,” the annual training clinic seemed like a great way to start my new horse and get away at the same time.

I packed my vehicle full of the necessary

supplies I would need for the week and all my horse training equipment, making sure I did not forget something important.

Sunday’s trip to the north country seemed to take forever to get to but as I neared the town of Grande Cache, the increasingly beautiful scenery made the long trip worthwhile.

It was a dry camp facility which meant there was no power or running water hook-ups so to me, we were roughing it but I was more than okay with that.

Washing-up in the Smokey River and drying wet clothes on a rope line was simply a treat and I was not uncomfortable in the least. All the comforts of a modern society were traded in for peace and tranquility. And it was definitely peaceful.

We cooked our meals over an open fire and the only noisy neighbours were the

herd of pack horses and their bells when they paid a visit to our camp.

This type of vacation is not for everyone, but it is becoming more common. People want to escape the everyday rat race we call life and return to a simpler, electronicfree world where the main worry is getting under the tarp before you get soaked to the skin from the daily mountain rainfall.

This was the first time I had attended the training clinic but you can be assured, it will not be my last, if only for the getaway experience.

Whatever you choose for a vacation, make sure you find your way to relax and enjoy every minute of your time. As my friend and horse trainer Larry Nelles says, “Hurry up and get on that horse before you get too old.”

Letter To The Editor New Chronic Wasting Disease Strategy In recent weeks there has been considerable discussion about the continued increase in the distribution and prevalence of CWD in Alberta, and Environment and Sustainable Resource Development’s (Fish and Wildlife) position on potential strategies for management of the disease.

On May 6, a meeting including a representative from each of the Alberta Fish and Game Associations and the Elk Foundation, and several staff from Fish and Wildlife (F&W) with the purpose of the meeting being for F&W for an update on the status of CWD in the province and give an early look at possible management strategies, if any, they are considering for dealing with CWD. Following is a summary of what was presented: The number of new CWD cases recorded in 2013 was 49, or 2% of the tested deer. 87% of the cases occur in mule deer, and is 2.5 times more prevalent in mule deer buck than mule deer does. The belief is that CWD is being passed through social interaction among deer, and that mule deer are more likely to aggregate than are whitetails. It’s unclear as to why bucks are more susceptible than does. F&W has examined the CWD management strategies of other jurisdictions where the disease is found. In some cases, states and provinces have elected to take a “hands off” approach to managing spread of the disease. Colorado and Saskatchewan do not “manage” CWD; in some mule deer populations infection rates have reached 50%. In others, various means of population control have been implemented; Illinois has used a selective harvest strategy and have been successful in slowing the growth in disease prevalence among deer.

To Tax Or Not To Tax Sam Rothwell Reporter Of all the divisive topics out there, taxes are at the top of most people’s list. This is no different for the residents of The County of Vermilion River. With plans for a newly proposed Dewberry hockey rink moving forward, there are mixed feelings towards the project.

On June 24 at the Clandonald Seniors Centre, people came out to hear about the advantages that many in the area would benefit from, but it’s the disadvantages that have some people reeling.

The proposed project would have residents of the County of Vermilion River

paying $49 per parcel per year for 15 years (a parcel being an area of land up to but not exceeding a quarter section).

This additional tax would be passed on to residents to help Dewberry pay back the 1.4 million dollars it would have to borrow to help pay for the new facility.

The main issue for the affected people is that many farmers in the area, own numerous sections and would have to pay many hundreds of dollars per year (or more) over the next 15 years; and those without children are unlikely to benefit from this facility.

Another issue for many residents is that people living within the Dewberry limits (among other towns in the county)

are exempt from the tax hike. The chosen course of action to try to quash the proposed tax is to attempt to get 790 required signatures on a petition.

This is a tall feat for the County, as there is barely that number of eligible people living there.

The main rules surrounding the collection of signatures for this petition include; a standardized petition; someone must be sponsored to present it to council, everyone that signs must be witnessed, all witnessed must sign an affidavit, all people signing must be electors in the county, and all signatures must be collected by July 10th at 4:30 p.m.

Many residents of the County of Vermilion River have decided to go forward with collecting signatures, and to do so there will be two stations set up on June 28th from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

One will be at the Seniors Center in Clandonald and the other will be at the Landonville hall. Once the petitions have all been collected, the affidavits will be signed at the Clandonald Seniors Centre on July 7th at 7:30 p.m. If there are enough signatures collected, the petitions will be delivered to council.

With no one sure what will happen after the July 10th deadline, there will be lots of county residents waiting and hoping it goes their way.

My Memories of Being a Boy Franklin Wolters Columnist

Every so often, I’ve had folks ask me how I can remember all my stories and of course I really can’t explain, but I have vivid memories of even my youngest childhood from back before I was even two years old.

My sister next to me wasn’t around yet, and I can remember being about to climb out of the wooden crib and get across the room and crawl into bed with Mom and Dad. Sister is 22 months younger than me!! Mom had a tea crate made of sturdy wood that had sides I’d say about three feet high. I could just peek over the top.

Mom thought it was a safe and secure playpen but I proved her wrong as about the second time she put me in there, I managed to climb out.

Dear Mom told me one time, bless her heart, that for some reason, I guess I was just hyper and that I was more trouble than all the other kids combined!! She, however, told me in later life, maybe I was

worth it. Thanks Mom. Mom told me that as a little boy, I would go turn on the radio when “Don Messer”, or “The Happy Gang,” were coming on and she wondered how I knew the time.

We all have something we’re fixated on and I guess I was on music at an early age.

We always got all the music programs on those early radio shows and I do remember singing along at an early age.

One day my Uncle Herman heard me singing my heart out as I played in the yard, and he picked me up, I was about four or so, as I remember and said “Frankie, someday you’re going to be famous.” Well, maybe in my own mind, anyway.

My next big deal was always to be in Dad’s company. Anytime I realized Dad was going someplace, I’d scurry to get ready and go along. I’d take “NO” for an answer very reluctantly, and I can remember the tantrums I’d throw to try and get my way. Like I said, I was a handful. I’m glad none of my kids ever acted up like that.

We really seemed to have spent time outdoors, summer or winter those times,

as I suppose there wasn’t all that much going on indoors like we have now. All the real exciting happenings were outdoors it seemed. Did you ever have a stick horse?

Like a little willow or poplar stick about an inch through and about four feet long?

Well you got some twine string out of the straw pile to use for lines and you straddled the stick and rode it where ever you travelled, you wouldn’t think of leaving it behind, except of course it wasn’t allowed to be tied up in the house.

Some things had to be understood. As I started school when I was only 5 years old it seemed my childhood took a turn for the worse when I had to be confined to a desk in a small room, and wasn’t allowed to just run around like I did at home. I spent most of the day looking out the window. I really wasn’t a happy camper and I had some personality clashes with some of the teachers and spent many recesses and noon hours in detention, I think they call it now. My first four or five years were basically total write-offs I would venture to say except for the ball playing and some of the other outside pursuits. I can say with a certain passion I had a bad attitude

and dislike of the whole shebang.

At a young age, however, I started sweeping the floor at school and making the fire and carrying the water. That was lucky as I needed the money to buy .22 shells. Dad had given me a nice little single shot “Winchester,” for my 12th birthday and it had a huge appetite for its ammunition. My little seven or eight dollar salary was hard pressed to maintain it. For some reason I really never got too crazy about horses, they were a necessary evil it seemed but I was happier running our little Ford 9N. Dad kept me home from school when I was eight to help cut grain and I ended up spending two years in grade four. I really was upset about that. I believe now I shouldn’t have been started at only five years. Kids need a longer childhood I believe.

By the time I was thirteen I was driving a bundle rack and pitching bundles, threshing, and my childhood was really over, you know what though, as I look back, darned if I would change even one day. I think I had a wonderful adventure for a boy in an interesting time.

People with confidence in their reading and writing skills have advantages over those who do not.

The Canadian Literacy and Learning Network estimates that 42 percent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 65 have low literacy skills, while less than 20 percent of those with the lowest literacy skills are employed.

Literacy groups across the country wonder why they’ve lost funding they depend upon to operate, given an obvious need for their services.

Under a new policy introduced in June by the American Association of Pediatrics, physicians in the US will now include encouragement to read aloud to young children when advising parents on essential issues such as immunization and nutrition.

The policy came about as a result of research revealing a significant correlation between reading to young children and their subsequent development of strong vocabular y and communication skills that aid in their

successful transition to school.

The European Union, despite the multitude of challenges arising due to diverse population and cultures, has made a strong commitment to i nve s t i n co m p re h e n si ve l i te ra c y and adult-learning programs over t h e l o n g -te r m , re co g n i zi n g t h a t enabling people to assist themselves now alleviates pressure on the social programs of the future.

A high degree of literacy is key to a progressive society. A nation that va l u es lite ra c y e n co u ra g es in it s people the ability and confidence to invent, innovate, and create---ultimately, for the benefit of all. If we miss the oppor tunity somehow in our early years, living in a progressive nation means that we have not missed the opportunity forever.

In early 2013, our Federal Government published a Call for Proposals inviting literacy groups to submit proposals for consideration in what was lauded as a new approach to improving the labour market outcomes of Canadians. The establishment of a new “Pan-Canadian network” would include coordination and suppor t of adult literacy and essential skills. Four components

comprised this new plan: Information and Resources, Connections, Innovations, and Research Proposals were due in May, with expectations that new agreements b et we e n l i te ra c y g ro u p s a n d th e government would b e in place by November.

There were delays. Maybe someone changed the nature of the plan without mentioning it to those affected by it. As far as is known, no fur ther public announcements h ave b e e n fo r th co m i n g fro m th e government setting out the operating blueprint for the new Pan-Canadian Network. Instead, defunding notices for existing federally-funded literacy programs across the country purportedly started arriving in mid-May. Issued by the Ministry of Employment and Social Development, the enmasse “So Sorry, You’re Done” notices leave literacy groups in abject chaos since existing funding ceases to flow June 30th. The quiet decision by the government to sever funding to literacy groups places an already vulnerable sector of our population in further jeopardy. The future of literacy in Canada today appears blurry indeed.

Many rely on the generosity of one of the thousands of advocates who recognize the value of literacy and therefore work diligently to ensure th e co n ti n u e d ava i l a b i l i t y of th e opportunity to learn. Literacy leads to more than a job and a paycheque.

It leads to acquiring the self-confidence of understanding how better to communicate, how to read competently, and how better to navigate life.

It leads to the opportunity to transform what might be a narrow, limiting life into one of possibility, productivity, and self-reliance.

The Japanese word, kaizen, means change for good. Basic communicatio n skills, rea din g an d writin g competency, allow people the chance to improve their quality of life. A resounding, permanent change for good.

A natio n that valu es it s p e o ple invests in its people for the good of those people and, ultimately, for the long-term good of the entire nation.

It doesn’t turn away from the most needy among us in favour of shortterm goals that only look good on a shiny poster.

Benoit Welcomes Federal Approval Of Northern Gateway Pipeline Proposal Leon Benoit, MP Submitted OTTAWA (25 June 2014) – Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, was pleased to learn that the Government of Canada accepted the recommendation of the Joint Review Panel for the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline, with 209 conditions. “This is not only great news for the good people and businesses of Vegreville-Wainwright, it is also a positive step toward a vital link for our energy producers to growing, highdemand markets,” said Benoit. “This is the right decision for our economy and it will benefit all Canadians.”

The Government of Canada reached its decision after the Joint Review Panel’s independent review of the Northern Gateway Pipelines proposal, which called for the construction and operation of two parallel pipelines to transport crude oil between Bruderheim, AB and Kitimat, BC, and a marine terminal

at the port of Kitimat. The proposal was submitted by Northern Gateway Pipelines Limited Partnership to the National Energy Board (NEB) for an environmental assessment and regulatory examination in 2010. This constituted the beginning of the regulatory process.

The Joint Review Panel for the Northern Gateway Project was an independent body established by the Minister of the Environment and the NEB to review the project. The Panel’s rigorous sciencebased review included feedback from over 1,450 participants in 21 different communities, reviewing over 175,000 pages of evidence and receiving 9,000 letters of comment. The NEB is responsible for regulating some 73,000 kilometres of pipelines transporting crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products across Canada. These have operated safely for over 60 years. “Only science should guide the process from here,” said Benoit.

However, there are clear benefits that extend to manufacturing done across our country, great construction jobs for Albertans and others across Canada, and add to our tax base to fund health care, education and other important social programs.”

“It’s apparent from the evidence we’ve heard in the Natural Resources Committee that the benefits of these projects will not be restricted to Alberta and British Columbia. Northern Gateway will generate jobs and prosperity from coast to coast and from the smallest to largest communities,” concluded Benoit. “I’m encouraged by this decision and I urge all stakeholders to strongly consider Northern Gateway’s clear link to economic growth as the approval process progresses.”

Vanilla Chiffon Cake The simplicity and elegance of this cake lends itself to being complimented with a variety of summer berries and slightly sweetened whipped cream. It is a perfect cake for celebrations such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, barbeques and Canada Day summer picnics.

Chiffon cake is angel food cake’s taller and more delicate sister. Like the angel food, baking a chiffon cake requires strict adherence to all the steps and the order they come in for successful results. There must be absolute no egg yolk in the egg white mixture, because

even the smallest amount will prevent the eggs from whipping properly. Also the beaters used to beat the egg yolk mixture must be thoroughly washed and rinsed to remove any trace of egg yolk before they are used for whipping the egg white. This is my own special recipe, for perhaps one of my very best cakes. It is tall, slightly spongy, moist and worth the extra effort. I hope you enjoy it.

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

This is a three bowl cake. Carefully separate the whites from 10 eggs that have sat out at room temperature for 30 minutes.

In the first bowl, a large one, place the 5 egg yolks and with an electric mixer, beat the oil into the eggs a teaspoon at a time. Add the vanilla and Vanilla Chiffon Cake slowly add the water to the egg yolk 10 egg whites at room temp for 30 mixture while beating. minutes In a separate bowl sift together the 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar cake flour, 1 cup of sugar, the salt and 5 egg yolks baking powder. Add the flour mixture 1/2 cup safflower oil into the egg yolk mixture a quarter 1 cup water at a time. Continue beating until well 2 teaspoons vanilla blended.

Now is the time to wade into the topic of water safety with your kids.

The first step is teaching your kids how to swim. Canadian Red Cross water safety program representative Marta Gorski says “as soon as infants can hold their heads up, parents can begin taking swimming lessons with their children.

As children move towards five and six years of age, swimming lessons begin to focus on safety, and eventually skills like treading water and swim strokes.”

The Canadian Red Cross (redcross. ca) offers swimming and water safety programs for all ages and confidence.

“Anyone can learn to swim at any age,” Gorski says.

Water safety goes beyond knowing how to swim. You and your kids also need to learn when to wear a life jacket and the serious risks that come along with being around water. “Water in nature is very powerful. Parents need to recognize the

strength of a current . . . Reading the posted signs and doing some research before you head out with your family is essential,” Gorski says.

She adds: “It only takes a second for a child to drown. It is very important that parents never look away or leave their child unsupervised no matter how deep the water. One inch of water is enough to cover a child’s mouth and nose.”

Most drowning deaths in Alberta are preventable. You can reduce the risks by remembering there is no substitute for adult supervision. Constant supervision is vital for a safe family outing. Life jackets and pool toys can assist children, but they can never replace your watchful eyes.

Gorski urges parents to ensure they have a locked, self-latching gate around any backyard pool. She also recommends all inflatable or temporary pools be emptied, deflated and turned upside down when an adult is not around to supervise.

It would be pretty to garnish the cake with fresh wild rose petals, which by the way are edible.

Online Video Showcases 10 Year Old’s Love For Chucks Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Dylan Donald lives in Regina, Saskatchewan with his family. He is 10 years old and needs your vote in his quest to win a chance to attend the Governor General’s History Awards for 2014. Dylan is a big fan of Chuck Wagon racing and used the sport as his entry topic for an online contest.

Donald entered an annual illustrated story writing contest for students aged 10-14 offered by Kayak: Canada’s History Magazine for Kids. Donald chose to do a story on the history of Chuck Wagon racing.

Chuck Wagon racing is an equestrian rodeo sport and is very popular in the prairie provinces of Canada such as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Dylan has a family history of this sport as his uncle is a pro racer, and explains it in detail in his story on the video you can watch online.

When asked how Dylan became interested in Chuck Wagon racing he replied “My uncle being in it and having family doing it has brought me close to it.”

Donald says to make his video he “created it by using pictures, videos and information and put it all together into a video. If people vote for it online, it can lead to me being able to go to Ottawa and meet the Governor General.”

When asked how someone can vote for him he said “They (general public) can go on the website Canada’s History for Kids, (Canadahistory.ca/kids), and go to ‘search for a young citizen’, then type Saskatch-

ewan in the search bar for places and you will see my face. Click on me and if you put your email in then you can vote for me.”

Persons can also go to http://www.cpcaracing.com, at the bottom of the home page view video and vote. Voting closes online July 11.

According to the website the purpose of this contest is to “Help strengthen both literacy skills and Canadian historical knowledge by encouraging Canadian kids to create their own illustrated story or comic based on any element of Canada’s

past they find of interest.”

The website goes on to say “The Governor General’s History Awards are Canada’s top honours in the field of history and heritage. They celebrate the very best in Canadian achievements to ensure our national past has a vibrant presence in our society today.”

As Chuck Wagon Races are a part of life for many in the area, voting for Dylan’s video is a way to show your support to the sport and the younger generation’s passion to learn, educate and be a part of these

Local News MLA, Shayne Saskiw Visits The Area To Speak To Community Members Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Canadian politician Shane Saskiw visited the areas of Mannville, Vermilion and Lloydminster on June 25.

Saskiw stopped by Vermilion’s own local restaurant Sammy’s to meet with community members and hear their thoughts and concerns. Saskiw engaged with locals, while enjoying an afternoon treat of coffee and cinnamon buns.

Saskiw provided the following statement regarding the meetings through-

out the day.

“It was great to be out in Mannville Vermilion and Lloydminster today, I truly enjoy hearing one-on-one the concerns and priorities of the community. People are saying it’s time for a change and that they want a government that will put Albertans first, over politics and self interest. The main issues I’m hearing are healthcare, seniors issues, the rising cost of power bills and the growing debt.

The Wildrose will put needs before wants and end the culture of entitlement.”

Shriner’s ‘FezMobile’ Visits Vermilion Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Last week we told you how the Al Shamal Shriner’s Exceptional Care Odyssy would be visiting Vermilion on June 26.

The red Ford Explorer dubbed the ‘FezMobile’ which is decorated like a Shriner’s hat, made a stop at the Lakeland College Firefighter training School at 2:15 p.m.

The Exceptional Care Odyssey has been making its way through Canada as part of the Exceptional Care for Exceptional Kids campaign for the Shrin er ’s H ospitals fo r ChildrenCanada.

The hospitals provide care to child r e n w i t h n e u r o m u s c u l o s ke l e t a l conditions, burn injuries and other special health care needs. The Shriner’s Hospitals mission along with details of the Odyssey can be found on their website www.exceptionalcare4kids.com.

The Shriner’s hospitals are not well known to the general public. Emmanuale Rondeau, the marketing manager for the campaign said, “Our goal in this odyssey is to shine some light on our Shriners in every community, make the public aware that if they do have a child that needs to be looked at, or that has a bone disorder that they are able to get that care.” Shriners are also visiting families throughout the journey who received treatments from their facilities and sharing in their success stories.

Onion Lake CPCA Races

5 days of CPCA racing took place this past weekend at Onion Lake. It is home to a new 5/8ths of a mile race track and a covered grandstand. The 5 day event will pay out over $150,000 in cash and prizes. With the new race track, it can accommodate 4 wagons per race and after the first 4 days of racing, the top 4 drivers in the aggregate after 4 nights of racing have advanced to the Championship Dash on June 29. At press time the results are unknown. Check next week’s Vermilion Voice for the results. It is normal for children to be choosy eaters, but picky eating can make mealtimes tough. Remember that as a parent, you decide which foods to serve and when and where to serve them. Allow your child to choose how much food they eat and whether they eat a certain food offered.

This can help make mealtimes more pleasant.

The whole family should eat the same foods. Your child will learn to like more foods by being exposed to them. Over time they will learn to eat and enjoy what you eat.

• Get rid of distractions.

Turn off the TV, sit down as a family and enjoy each other’s company.

• Offer familiar foods with new foods.

the first time, keep offering it. It can take a child many tries before they accept a new food. As a child gets older, try foods again that they may not have liked before. Tastes can change over time.

• Avoid using food as a reward or punishment or bribing your child to finish his or her meal.

This teaches your child that certain foods are better or worse than others. You want your child to enjoy all foods. Eating should be pleasant, not a duty or a chore.

• Involve your child in shopping for food and making meals.

Children who help choose and prepare their food are more likely to eat it.

• Be a positive role model.

Eat a variety of healthy foods. Do not expect your child to eat a food if you’re not willing to try it first.

Big News For Vermilion Heather MacMillan Submitted Thanks to the great effort from many groups in town, Vermilion’s proposal to the Government of Alberta to host Alberta Culture Days, September 26, 27 and 28, has resulted in a resounding endorsement!

Vermilion has been designated a FEATURE CELEBRATION Site. This designation was given to only five centres in Alberta, meaning this is a great accomplishment for Vermilion. It qualifies Vermilion for grant money to enable us to put on the three day celebration.

“Culture matters to the well-being of Albertans and the growth and prosperity of our province. The Government of Alberta is pleased to make this seed money available to event planners, which will in turn help draw attention to out amazing local culture, as well as provide Albertans with

more opportunity to engage in cultural pursuits.” Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture.

This three day event is about family, community, and cultural vibrancy. It is a celebration of everything great about this province! Time Of Our Lives – Dewberry Grad 2014 Susanna Pankiw Submitted “Every man is the architect of his own future.” ~Appius Claudius It was with much excitement, trepidation, hard work and albeit a few tears, six amazing students graced the stage at Dewberry School. They were honored for their dedication and perseverance of twelve years of discovery, relationship building and educational successes. Friday night was their night, and rightly so, it’s not every day a person gets to begin a journey in such style. What a great way to initiate the blueprints of the future! The honorable Dr. Richard Starke, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster and Assistant Superintendent Brad Romanchuk were a few of the distinguished guests that recognized the students’ achievements and bestowed upon them great words of advice. One of the most prominent pieces of advice everyone could take away from these ceremonies was a quote by Sir Winston Churchill, “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” Success is failure turned inside out and it’s the opportunity to learn and grow from them that makes it worth the effort!

Principal Curt Orbeck inducted them into the Panther alumni and reminded them to always remember their Panther Pride: to have potential, be responsible, inspire others, continue to discover, and engage in their future. He also encouraged them to “be positive by design, not by default”.

Wild Rose Pavilion Grand Re-Opening Submitted

Join the Lloydminster Exhibition Team on Thursday July 3rd at 4:30 pm as we celebrate the grand re-opening of the Wild Rose Pavilion.The renovations started in May and the Wild Rose Pavilion has been transformed into a beautiful facility. The renovations include new lighting, flooring, paint, wall mounted sound proofing boards, a permanent bar structure, and the washrooms have been completely updated as well as improvements to the ventilation system. With these timely upgrades the Wild Rose Pavilion will continue to be a popular rental facility and this renovation will ensure that this continues well The Government of Alberta continues to support the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association. In May 2014 the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association received supportfrom the Government of Alberta through the Community Facility Enhancement Program. This is a matching grant and has assisted in the renovations of the Wild Rose Pavilion.

The Government of Alberta’s support for the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association has been outstanding and this additional funding continues to enhance our entire infrastructure.

The Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association is a community based organization serving Lloydminster and area since 1904. The Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association exists to enhance both the agricultural and urban communities, by providing facilities and resources for the development and conducting of business, education, social and recreation activities throughout the year!

In her reminiscing, she revealed that there were definitely lessons to be learned from the various subjects. Social Studies taught them to value their opinion and accept that others might have a different one. English taught them to look for a deeper meaning by using their imaginations and not being judgemental. Biology taught them everything on earth is connected and supported

by each other and Math taught them how to read a situation and figure out a solution to a problem. She concluded her speech with a quote from J.K. Rowling, “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”As the ceremonies drew to a close, Master of Ceremonies, Tyson Lancaster presented them with an After Grad Survival Kit and instructions on how to use the tools inside. In this kit he placed: an eraser to fix mistakes (he reminded them to keep making them), elastic band

to stretch themselves beyond their limits, paper clip to gather their wits about them, string to tie things together when everything falls apart, a Post-It pad so as not to forget things, nickel so they can’t say they are broke and a smile, just because. Six students arrived but six proud graduates exited the gym to begin construction on the development of their future. They left with a set of blueprints (graduation certificate) that will be their ticket to a fantastic journey. Congratulations, Dewberry Class of 2014!

Soccer Season Winds Up for Most Teams Geraldine Collins Submitted The rain held Wednesday evening as the outdoor soccer season wound up for most of our teams. Parents took to the fields and popsicles were handed out for an evening of fun and farewell.

The annual Derek Bucharski team spirit awards were presented by the Bucharski family in honour of their son and brother Derek, an avid soccer fan. Winners included Brody Young (U12), Shae Collins (U14), Jessica Kingston (U16) and Ryan Sherwood (U18). Each player received a soccer ball, certificate and plaque, and their name goes onto a larger plaque in our clubhouse.

Congratulations to the recipients and, on behalf of the Vermilion Soccer Association, thank you to the Bucharski family for organizing and presenting this wonderful award.

Highlights of the season itself included some big wins by some of our senior teams.

One of the U12 boys teams lost only one game in the Camrose night classic, coming out with a silver medal. After beginning the season with a tie, they went on to lose only one league game and one due to penalties at the Lakeland Cup, though a narrow goal

differential prevented them from medalling there; overall, a “stellar season”, according to coach Todd Ree. The U14 boys finished the season as league champs, and won a silver medal at Lakeland Cup! All year the boys “worked hard with a short bench” according to team manager Kim Thompson, and this team full of “characters”, who are “all developing nicknames, for better or worse” according to coach Cathy Bartley, will continue to train for Provincials in Vermilion in two weeks. Gwen Randall-Young Submitted Do you sometimes dream of the perfect weekend getaway? They are not always so easy to arrange, especially if you are keeping an eye on finances, or there are children to consider.

With a little creativity and imagination, it is possible to create that perfect weekend right at home. If you have children, you might agree with friends to take each other’s children, so each couple can have a free weekend. Then, you can plan the ‘holiday’ just as you would if you were out of town.

Depending on your interests, you might check out museums or art galleries, with lunch at a sidewalk café. There are many evening activities - musical events or theater from which to choose. Or you might decide on a special evening at home.

If you enjoy cooking together, you might savor a leisurely pace with dinner lasting a couple of hours. Or you could bring something in to eat, and rent a special movie. You could plan for relaxing baths or nurturing massages.

If you are alone, you can still plan a lovely weekend for yourself. Forget the regular chores or activities you generally do on the weekend, and only do things you love. You might putter in your garden, read a good book, listen to (or play) music or do some writing. The main thing is that you give yourself a ‘mini-vacation’ from your usual routine.

The nice thing about a ‘vacation’ at home is that you save travel time and money. More importantly, such a weekend just might serve to remind you about the real meaning of leisure time. If you truly get a sense of what it means to experience leisure, you just might want to incorporate a little more of it into your life. For most of us, that would be a very healthy thing.

Local News Girl Guide Spaghetti Supper Held At Wenditos Lorna Hamilton Reporter

Eight girls from the Vermilion Girl Guides took over Wenditos on Monday June 23 for a spaghetti supper which was hosted by the new restaurant to help support the fundraising efforts for The Girl Guides 2016 trip to the UK, where, the girls will be travelling to England for five days and Scotland for five days. While in the UK each girl will get to chose a town to visit and have the opportunity to be the tour guide for the day.

The girls were full of excitement as they busily served each and every individual who came and supported their fundraising efforts in a professional manner, checking back on their customers to see if everything was ok and clearing tables and washing dishes.

Wendy Fulsom, owner of Wenditos, said to keep an eye out because they will be holding more private suppers at the restaurant quarterly over the next two years to help raise the funds needed for the UK trip.

Careers Update On the Bear Sightings Near Provincial Park Lindsey Montgomery Reporter On June 27 Gary Walsh, Conservation Officer for the area, had this statement to make when asked about the repor ted black bear sightings near the Provincial Park.

Walsh stated, “ We have not had anyone phone in and report a sighting since Monday June 23. The last sighting of the bear we had reported to us was by Claysmore on the west side, so we now feel the bear is going through.”

When a person reports a sighting of bears, signs are put up to make people aware of them.

Careers Marwayne’s Community Hall Celebrates Its 2nd Anniversary With Special Guests ‘Hey Romeo’ Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

In celebration of the 2nd Anniversary party for the Marwayne Community Hall’s grand opening, a steak supper and dance was held.

President of the community hall Todd Hames said the steak supper was great, thanks to The Ag Society and Hall committee members that prepared the food. Thanks goes out to OB Hutterite Colony for providing buns and potatoes. Steaks were

prepared on the patio barbeque which Hames said “was a great time for everyone, as the rain held off until later in the evening.”

For the dance par t of the event guests enjoyed a p er formance by Awa rd wi n ni n g C a na d ia n co u ntr y music band ‘Hey Romeo’.

The performance provided entertainment for all ages on the dance floor.

“It was a great event enjoyed by eve r yo n e th e re. ‘ H ey R o m e o’ was wowed by the great facility in

Marwayne and the friendly people.

Thank you to Gruff Gushnowski from CFCW who came out to MC the event,” Hames said.

or body .We have become aware of so many diseases and illnesses and hear the plea for dollars to find a CURE. People don’t choose mental illness any more than cancer, strokes o r dia b etes b ut of ten s tr u g gle in silence. We need to become more open to listening to the stories of those in the gray of mental illness and “seek to understand” their journey. We often don’t like to go there, though, do we? It might take us from our place in the sun to feel their pain.

Quilter’s Retreat Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Extraordinary Extras which resides at Lakeland mall in Vermilion held their 14th Annual Quilters Retreat June 24, 25 and 26 at Lakeland College.

Registrants came to the College for this three day event which included workshops, sewing time and social activities.

Accommodations for the event were available in a dorm at the College, which is included in the registration fee.

The activities that took place were

conveniently located in a Lakeland College classroom that the ladies rented.

The retreat included two instructors who provided different projects for the members that change every year.

Carol Wasylik, the owner of Extraodinary Extras said, “The ladies that attend do so from all over and we have four newbies this year. One came from British Columbia. We only have one local member the rest came from out of town.” They quilt several hours a day, starting very early in the morning and going until late at night. They commented they have a lot of fun.
