Dewberry Graduates

Dewberry Graduation Day was held on June 20 and featured six graduates. To begin the celebrations a banquet was held at the Community Hall. Guests of the grads as well as faculty, engaged in toasts and speeches. The Dewberry school gymnasium held the ceremony where presentations were given. A slideshow was prepared to commemorate memories enjoyed throughout the years. Congratulations Dewberry Grads! Wainwright’s 61st Stampede Sue Chikie Reporter The 61st Annual Wainwright Stampede began June 18, with the Rodeo Slack Performance during the day and a Downtown Stampede Kick Off at 5 p.m. which included an annual Chili Cook-Off and competition to heat things up.

For the little ones, activities included a petting zoo, face painting, children’s games and more. Cowboys and cowgirls could try their skills riding the Mechanical Bull. An Air Band Competition took place along with a Mock Jail.

The Chuckwagon Races started the

action on June 19. During the four days of rodeo performances, Wild Pony Races were featured.

Saturday morning the Downtown Parade was held with the theme “International Year of Family Farming then the rodeo performance took place in the afternoon as well as at 9 p.m. for a “Rodeo Under the Lights”, although the Saturday Chuckwagon races were called off due to the track being too wet to race.

Saturday night also featured Aaron Goodvin at the Stampede Cabaret.

On June 19 the companies joined in a celebration of these milestones at the Kitscoty Community Hall.

A lunch of barbecued burgers along with all the fixings were served up to a large crowd. During this time, guests were free to browse the informative displays set up by the departments of Population and Statistics, Planning and Development, Public Works, Natural Gas Utility, Protective Services, Financial information and various county maps.

A number of plaque presentations were made to the County of Vermilion River. During the presentation the County showcased a slideshow of past and present memories to commemorate their 50th year.

Cotton Candy, lunch and a hoop toss game provided entertainment to everyone before and after the delivery of speeches and bestowals. During the speeches for

our area that provide service that we could never afford to fund through taxation, and they are doing it all on a volunteer basis.

We really have to be appreciative and thankful of all our volunteer firefighters.”

This acknowledgment followed a gratuitous round of applause. Watt went on to speak about a number of accomplishments including the designation to the County as the first rural municipal Wetlands Restoration Agency in Alberta in 2013. Going on to speak about municipal development Watt mentioned the key component of success all these years “has been the people.”

The County shared a special moment by acknowledging the employees who have dedicated past years of hard work as well as those who have been employed long term ranging from 31 to 52 years of service and dedication. Kitscoty- Arrest of Male on Canada Wide Warrant O n J u n e 18 , 2014 at a p p roximately 8:30 p.m., Kitscoty RCM Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Hwy 16 heading eastbound towards Kitscoty. A Kitscoty member set up surveillance on the highway and observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle turn south on range road 32. The member followed the vehicle for approximately two kilometers when it suddenly pulled in to a residential yard.

The Kitscoty member approached the vehicle and observed the male and female occupants of the vehicle attempting to change places so it appeared that the male was no longer driving. When confronted with this observation the male, later identified as John Robert Craig, became belligerent and evasive by refusing to identify himself or cooperate with the Police.

RCMP Reports When the member attempted to arrest Craig he fled out the window of the vehicle and engaged in a physical altercation with the member. After a brief fight, Craig was arrested and secured.

Police were able to utilize the Livescan fingerprint system to positively identify Craig after he supplied a number of false alias and finally determined that he was subject to a Canada Wide warrant for breaching his Parole conditions. In addition to the Parole Warrant, Craig was subject to a Canada Wide driving prohibition and will face a number of new charges associated to this incident.

Craig is currently in custody awaiting his return to prison in Saskatchewan.

St. Albert RCMP Attend Block Parties On Saturday, June 14, 2014, RCMP attended 3 Block Par ties and met many positive St. Albert residents of all ages. At the Deslauriers Crescent/ Deville Place Block Party, 82 residents attended, while the Block Parties in Heritage Lakes and Lacombe Park were smaller in size. Great conversations were held at all 3 locations while burgers and hot dogs were shared along with delicious potluck dishes.

St. Albert Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), in partnership with St. Albert Neighbourhood Watch and the St. Albert RCMP, encour-

age residents to host Block Parties as a Crime Prevention initiative for the city.

“As people get to know their neighbours, they naturally start to watch out for each other. Knowing who belongs in your neighbourhood and who does not, helps residents know when to report suspicious activity to the RCMP.”, says Cpl. Laurel Kading of the St. Albert RCMP. While the RCMP mingle with city residents at the Block Parties, the officers can inform them of crime trends that are occurring and prevention tips to help stop the problem. At this weekend’s parties, thefts from motor vehicles were discussed and everyone was encouraged to remove valuables from parked vehicles and to lock them up.

St. Albert Neighbourhood Watch sponsors the Block Parties in St. Albert by providing free hot dogs and hamburgers for any Block Parties registered with St. Albert FCSS. As well, Neighbourhood Watch provide lightweight barriers to block the street when approved. To host a Block Party, you only have to choose the area of your neighbourhood that you want to host, pick a date and contact FCSS or register through the City of St. Albert web page. The City would like to reach a goal of 100 Block Parties this summer, so get your neighbours together and be part of this St. Albert Crime Prevention program.

Break and Enter at Farmyard On June 11th, 2014, Two Hills RCMP received a report of a break and enter at a rural property near Hairy Hill, Alberta.

S o m e ti m e b e t w e e n 10 : 0 0 a m , a n d 2: 30 p m, u n k n own su sp e c t s attended the rural address and went through several out buildings on the property. No damage was done to the property, however an unknown amount of fuel was stolen. The vehicle involved is believed to be a pickup truck, still donning winter tires. Several sets of footprints were found on the property, with a unique tread pattern, indicating that a suspect was likely wearing golf shoes during the break and enter. The property was only vacant for a short period of time, so it is possible the suspects had prior knowledge of the property or its residents.

Two Hills RCMP are seeking the public’s help with any information related to the break and enter. The public are encouraged to call immediately regarding any suspicious activity, especially in the overnight or early morning hours.

The beginning of summer marks a time when people are enjoying getting out in the yards and gardens, basking in the warmer weather and just overall, feeling great.

For many, time constraints do not allow much down-time and finding a way to balance home and work schedules can be a bit of a juggling act. For some, the juggling act comes easy and their time is spent equally between the two lifestyles; work and home. For others, it can be a little tougher.

The day-to-day tasks of running a household, taking care of children or family members and holding down a fulltime job can cut vacations short and limit time allowed for family, friends and personal interests.

Although many people love the jobs they do, they are in effect trading somethings they love to do, for somethings they

The Juggling Act like. Out of financial or emotional commitments, people continue to struggle along, compromising their time with family and hobbies.

The juggling act can also cause physical stress on a person’s body and over time, they can become run-down and fall ill to a number of colds and other stress related problems.

Just recently, The Voice family has had to say goodbye to our front-line staff member, Brigitte Gannon. Brigitte was the friendly face most would meet as they came into our office. She took care of the regular day-to-day operations of the office including reception and fielding phone calls, providing advertising information to customers, helping with correspondent’s weekly submissions, delivering papers on Mondays and various other tasks to help keep us all on track throughout each week.

Brigitte also helps run the Hidden Lake Ranch located just east of Vermilion where she and her family run a successful bed and breakfast-ranch visiting operation. To say the least, Brigitte has a busy home life

and will now be focusing on the necessary duties within. We are sad to see her leave us but know she will be around for visits in the future.

With helping run a locally-run quality newspaper, life can be a little hectic and at times, very chaotic but it is also very rewarding. Covering local events throughout the week as well as evenings and weekends can make for long hours at the office.

When readers stop by the office to pick up an extra copy because of a particular story or photo, that in its self, is a huge pat on the back. Having people stop you on the street and comment on an article or take the time to write a letter to the editor provides any writer with a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.

This has happened to me numerous times over the course of my time with the Voice and our whole team works hard to publish the best locally-run newspaper in the Vermilion area.

However, I too have found it a difficult juggling act. I enjoy attending all the functions in and around Vermilion and

surrounding areas but will be stepping back from my role as Editor here at the Voice. This was not a decision made easily but rather one that has taken some deep thought and consideration.

I will not be leaving the Voice family but rather taking a position as a correspondent for the communities of Mannville, Minburn and my area, Innisfree.

I am not disappearing from the newspaper and will still have articles from time to time but need to step back and take some time for myself, my family and a few personal interests that have been put by the wayside before perusing other interests.

Thank you so much to the Voice staff, of who I call my work family as they have from day one, warmly welcomed me to the office.

Please feel free to stop me on the street and let me know about different events going on in the community as I still want to attend the many fun and exciting activities our area has to offer.

Letter to the Editor Rights of plant breeders remain protected Dear Editor, Vegreville-Wainwright farmers and plant breeders are continuing to express their concerns regarding our Government’s proposed amendment of the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act. I must take opportunity to clarify our position.

Through this amendment, the conditions, scope and duration of the protection of breeders’ rights will be modified. It will also prepare the way for Canada’s adoption of the 1991 Convention of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV 91).

An effective plant breeders’ rights system is intended to create an environment that encourages and supports the

development of new plant varieties. In fact, amending the Act will encourage increased investment in plant breeding, resulting in access to new plant varieties and increased global competitiveness for farmers.

For the first time in Canadian law, bill C-18 will codify the ability of farmers to save their seed. We’ve struck a good balance between ensuring breeders have the ability to achieve a return on investment for their plant breeding research efforts, and also preserving the right for famers to save and condition seed for their own use.

The majority of the 71 members of UPOV adhere to UPOV 91. All of Canada’s major trading partners are included in this group. Since 1998, UPOV 91 has been

A:

First of all anytime you plan to get off the ground be prepared and don't work alone if possible. On a low slope roof I generally climb on the roof if possible.

Getting a top view of the shingles and roof penetrations is best but if you are afraid of heights you should stay on the ground. Here is how I would do it. Start on the ridge and work toward the eaves looking for missing shingles. I also look for open or improper flashings which are likely to leak. Cupped or curled shingles are a sign of problems as well. There may be loose rocks on the roof near the eaves as a result of ice damming which makes the roof very slippery so be careful. If the eaves troughs contain a lot of rock from the shingles you know that the shingles are failing. Overall the entire roof should look the same. For the inexperienced I suggest looking for areas that are different. Usually a roof will fail in certain areas such as the south side first. If something doesn't look right take a few pictures and visit a roofing company. They will look at your pictures and advise you for free at this point. Always get multiple opinions.

the standard to which counties wishing to become members must conform.

The proposed changes would not change what farmers are allowed to do with respect to protected plant varieties. In fact, the amendments contain new elements which are intended to increase breeders’ abilities to enforce their rights on protected plant varieties.

Our Government has been joined by stakeholders such as CropLife, the Cana-

dian Federation of Agriculture, the Grain Growers of Canada and the Canadian Seed Growers Association in support of these proposed changes. It’s time to strengthen intellectual property rights for plant breeding in Canada. Our Government will continue to encourage investment in research and development – something by which all Canadians benefit.

Clean off the sunglasses this weekend as June 21 is the summer solstice, the day with the most hours of daylight during the whole year. More importantly to some it is also known as the first day of summer and we get to leave the temperamental spring antics behind us. Hopefully, long range is even calling for sunny days.

With summer officially upon us we have no excuses for not getting outdoors creating and enjoying our adventures. I will probably be heading out to the cabin to enjoy the first day of summer.

Last weekend being Father’s Day, I got to enjoy the outdoors in a unique way with the entire family. My wife, daughters and grandson took me to the “Provost Splash and Smash”. It’s an annual outdoor Wild West monster trucks, mud bog racing, off road racing with jumps, rollovers and crashes, even riding lawn mower racing.

It was a full day of man mania, which even included lady drivers. There were many giant monster trucks and many well known that performed incredible feats in a thunderous roar.

When the monster trucks were playing doing “wheelies” and “burning donuts” they created some dust storms and spit dirt everywhere, while the mud bog racers spewed wet mud freely into the stands.

For those that don’t know what mud racing is, it is exactly that. Two deep drag strips are dug out of a dirt field and lots of water is added to create mud pits that would sink the family car. Then the huge-tired trucks line up, and with a red light, green light signal, the race is on across the very long mud pits. The racing

trucks were everything from street legal to extreme modified vehicles.

So if you were one of those finicky people who is squeaky clean with every hair in place and don’t like to get dirty, this wasn’t the place for you as I guarantee you, you’re going to get dirty.

During one of the races where the super modified racers which are essentially top fuel racers with paddle tires, streaked across the mud pits almost like fast boats on water. When one racer closest to the stands, during the run angled sideways ever so slightly losing control for a second, that’s all it took to send a meteor shower of wet gooey mud into the entire stands.

With nowhere to go or hide except behind loved ones using them as human shields, you were going to get “hit” and there wasn’t even enough time to grab the wife to make her an effective shield.

So we all took a little mud shrapnel, some more than others. A young lady sitting below us took a face full, looking like someone dunked her right in the mud bog. The looks on faces and antics I found quite humorous and laughed uncontrollably for quite some time. It was

I have done a great deal of off highway travel in a lot of different vehicles with mud, swamp and muskeg. All of which I call fun and this was like an extreme version of what I like to do.

Get out there this weekend and enjoy the first day of summer, I’m tempted to see if the riding mower would make it across the slough on the back forty.

When the Smoke Clears Isn’t it funny that some look at mud as filth and grime while others look at it as the making of a very fun day!

Local Resident Helps Tidy The Town

Town resident Chris Thomas can be seen on a weekly basis helping keep the streets of Vermilion clean and tidy.

Thomas felt he wanted to contribute to his community after noticing some trash floating around the downtown area and asked the Town if he could help by picking up trash once a week.

Thomas was issued his supplies and safety wear and has worked tirelessly ever since picking up what others carelessly throw away. Thanks Chris for keeping our town tidy!

I was amazed at the riding mower racers. One class was unmodified, all with mowers removed of course and I was amazed how fast they would go and the skill it took to drive them. Some modified mowers were incredibly fast and defied all laws of gravity and motion for a mower. I was thinking of having races at my rural property once a week… with mowers attached!

The food was great with home style grilled Smokey’s, hamburgers and hotdogs, with sliced potato fries. This year they had a well set up fair grounds next to the race tracks. It was great entertainment for the whole family and a great way to spend father’s day outdoors.

I don’t know when you could say that this culture began. You know in the early days that most manufactured goods were really quite scarce and it seemed that you were forced to make all those scarce things last as long as you could. As a consequence you found ways to repair all those kinds of things and make them serviceable until a replacement could be found. Bring back memories?

Remember the shoe repair shops?

Every small town had at least one. I can’t remember when I last saw one anywhere now. The idea of wearing shoes after they needed fixing has passed away. Now days it’s cheaper to just go buy a new pair instead. That goes for just about all our appliances and such any more. Anything goes wrong with your washer or dryer and a trip to find a repair depot usually ends up with a trip to the shop for a new one.

It seems the cost of a repair part, if you can get one, plus the labour bill just makes repairing anything out of the question. The T.V. doctors are a similar story it seems.

They tell us to recycle computers or such like, because it seems they have become obsolete almost as soon as you take them home. Everything you buy has a limited useful time it seems and you simply just throw it away and buy a new one. The idea is it keeps the factories busy and people employed making new products and so on and on.

Try that now and you’re faced with the idea of turning the part in and getting a re-manufactured part and getting a few dollars core fee and the idea is the labour involved in the shop work makes any attempt at the repairing the thing out of the question. You can’t even buy a bearing or brushes to fix it yourself anyways. Seems most of the time the tail lamps are sealed units anymore. Forget replacing a bulb for a few cents. Can’t be done, you have to buy the whole unit. Just try that one on for size!! Same goes for a transmission or similar problems, it takes so long to fix that the labour bill would sink you. It’s cheaper to get a re-manufactured part and give them your old one.

Better have a deep pocket and a long arm.

Gone are the days I can remember Dad would back the old Model A Ford into the shop and take out the transmission and check out all the parts and replace any bearing or gears and have it mobile again in a day or two. That went for any of our tractors or other things too. You could repair those old machines in those hard times and get by.

Guess that applies to most of the buildings that you see that are useful one day and the next thing you see is a huge track hoe standing by a pile of rubble that used to be a building and you hear of a new building having to be built to replace it or the place it stood is turned into a parking lot. We seem to be running out of places to dump our garbage anymore, if you don’t believe me head for the town of Ryley and see the new mountain there. It’s all happened in a short time you’d wonder

On a trip down east last year, I saw beautiful old homes all restored and like new and it seemed so much a wonderful preservation of their history. In this prosperous country we don’t worry about our history or any such thing, it’s better to just get the old thing out of the way to make way for the new. Maybe we should look to the old Countries where we see centuries old churches and building restored and kept to record the history of those times.

Yes I know as countries go we’ve not been here much over a hundred years.

That’s just a fraction, a short minute of time in our total history. We won’t leave anything like the pyramids or those cathedrals behind will we? It’s only just a short time ago we had log cabins with dirt floors and no windows even. I can understand needing something better and of course we need to keep making things better and

up to date, but there must be a balance between that and wasting good things and turning them into garbage. I hope in time to come we can realize that the worlds resources will be depleted and we will of necessity need to use up the old more effectively to have any kind of lifestyle that can be sustained

Things go better when human beings can see green from anywhere they might choose to stand. Even in the most densely populated cities where cars, commerce, and concrete rule, savvy city planners know the benefits of leaving space for nature.

You may have enjoyed a few minutes lolling in the shade of an ancient tree planted for the benefit of your ancestors, but also with you in mind, thanks to urban planners with foresight and an understanding of the vital connection between humans and nature.

There are exceptions, of course, but it’s probable that most of us respond positively to beauty. Think of some of the large cities you may have visited on vacation or at least heard about through others: Edmonton’s Hawrelak Park (though it will always be Mayfair to me); Vancouver’s Stanley Park; San Diego’s Balboa Park; New York City’s Central Park; Amsterdam’s Ulster Park; St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin.

Each one invites us to enter for a few moments of reflection or communing with each other in a setting that celebrates nature’s bounty. Prime acres thrive within sprawling urban centres, forever protected from progressive developers, providing a guaranteed, permanent oasis to anyone who wishes to access it.

If an urban area is planned from the beginning with the well-being of its inhabitants in mind, there will always

be ample green space to keep urbanity in balance. Cities are noisy. We work.

We go to school. We hurry. We navigate the sidewalks and streets, our minds organizing content lists of what needs to be done today, tomorrow, next week, and next month. Even the most ordinary of lives is full of challenges and responsibilities. And chaos from which we require regular escape.

Sometimes our houses are too close together. Or we live in apartments with Jackboot Jones living upstairs from us.

There are times when we simply desire an alternative to dodging the traffic of everyday life.

If we’re fortunate enough to live where our leaders possess the foresight and wisdom to recognize the impor tance of park space, we can more efficiently navigate the chaos of modern living. Within the parameters of a well-planned park, we feel as though we have slipped through a leafy archway into an oasis where all the frenzy and noise of living is temporarily suspended. We relax, and with a long, slow exhalation, all the tension of responsibility dissipates.

everyone to exist harmoniously within such space. We are old, we are young.

We are black, brown, peach, and varying shades emerging from any combination of these. We are labourers and professionals. Each of us desires what is found here, and without speaking about it, each one of us does our part to ensure the maintenance of our lifesustaining refuge. As we take care of our park, so may we continue to benefit.

The park is green. We inhale deeply, grateful for the rejuvenation we feel when we cross its threshold.

Kale and Onions Kale has so m a ny b e n e f i t s i t can easily be called a super food. The best way to eat kale is steamed or lightly sautéed. Many foods have more benefits eaten raw; kale however has more benefits eaten gently cooked.

Kale is packed with antioxidants.

K a l e a l s o h a s a n ti-i nf l a m m a to r y proper ties. Kale is known to have cholesterol reducing properties. Its nutrient comp osition is such that even a small amount provides a lot of vitamins and minerals including large amounts of vitamin K and A. Kale is also a good source of vitamin C, manganese and B6. Something that is very interesting about kale is that it has the ability to assist our body’s d etoxif i c ati o n s ys te m by p rovi ding glucosinolates for both phase one and phase two of the process and provides detoxification at the genetic level. Kale also contains five known glucosinolates that our body can convert to five different cancer preventive isothiocyanates. Yes, eat your kale.

My first experience with kale was several decades ago. I knew kale was very healthy, so I made a salad with it and proceeded to eat it. The kale felt like it was cutting up the roof of my mouth, so it was not a great first experience. I later developed this recipe, and found that it is a ver y

nice side dish, even for breakfast with sauté until the kale begins to wilt, warmed through and slightly softeggs. The Italian seasoning can be add the seasoning and the peppers ened. Serves four. subbed out for dill for a change. Also and continue until the peppers are sliced mushrooms and or chopped garlic can be sautéed with the onions.

News Is Shingles A Worry For You? Now You Can Get Vaccinated Karen Nedzielski Reporter Anyone concerned with attracting the irritating Shingles disease can now take steps to avoid the itchy, tingling and painful discomfort from the skin breakout.

Shingles is an infection caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox called the varicella zoster virus. The virus stays active in your body after the chickenpox virus and if it becomes active again, it caused Shingles. Approximately two out of every ten people will acquire Shingles over their lifetime.

When the virus becomes active again, it travels down the nerve fibers that extend to your skin, where a rash develops and can be quite painful.

A person can acquire Shingles from having the virus in their body for years, after coming into contact with someone who has the chicken pox virus. A person may not always show symptoms of the virus and still be a carrier.

Shingles is most common in persons age 50 and over and those who have a compromised immune system such as HIV,

cancer and using certain drugs for organ transplant.

If a person experiences repeated outbreaks of the virus, you should consult your doctor for possibly acquiring the vaccine for the virus.

The symptoms are a numbness, tingling, itching pain where a rash is about to appear and can also be accompanied by a fever or chills, headache and nausea.

During the eruptive stage a rash can appear on the body which is followed by swelling or bumps which form blisters-like lesions. The lesions, which mainly appear on a band or patch of the body, contain clear fluid which break open and after approximately 14 days form scabs.

Upon diagnosis, a few things can be done to help alleviate the pain and discomfort of the virus including your doctor prescribing an antiviral medicine as well as pain medications. After approximately three to five weeks, normally symptoms subside.

A vaccine is available to help prevent the disease and is available at most pharmacies by appointment and a prescription.

The vaccine is a live-vaccine and must be prepared just before being administered to the body.

Hidden Creek 4H Multi Club Achievement Day Lindsey Montgomery Reporter The weather in Vermilion chose not to cooperate with Hidden Creek’s 4H event on June 21, however, that did not stop the enthusiastic bunch from going ahead with plans.

The 4H club members, educators, family and guests, waited out the rain in a barn on the fair grounds. Still planning on going

ahead with most of the events, the club was busy setting up and preparing for the celebrations. Prizes and certificates for the 4H year were given. Projects included Canine, Vet Science, Photography and Light horse. Light horse activities included Western Pleasure, Gymkhana, English and Showmanship. A silent auction was held for the featured photography. Three horses including a mare and foal were part of the Vet Science project.

Paradise Valley Three Cities Fair

Paradise Valley held their Three Cities Fair this past weekend with children’s events, Community, Horticulture and Livestock events, Team Penning and the Rodeo/Bull- A- Rama. It took place on Friday, June 20 starting off with a breakfast in the morning and a BBQ supper and Dance in the evening.

Northeast Alberta Regional Heifer Show Results Submitted On June 14 the Myrnam Arena was the site for the Nor theast Alber ta 4-H Regional heifer show. Over 40 4-H members from across the NE region attended the show bringing over 50 head of 4-H project heifers, 2 yr old pairs and 3 year old pairs.

Driving Trials Wrap-Up Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The East West Chapter of the Alberta Carriage Drivers Association (ACDA) held it 23rd Anniversary Horse Driving Trials in Vermilion on June 14 and 15 at the fairgrounds bringing competitors and carriage driving enthusiasts from around

the area.

The Saturday had 27 competitors with 20 of them continuing on to the Sunday marathon event.

The ACDA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the equestrian discipline of carriage driving and the growing sport of Combined Driving.

The Association hosts numerous events

Vermilion’s Lorraine Dibben, with the help of her groom, carefully navigates their way through the obstacles during the marathon driving class on June 15. around the province and welcomes all level of drivers and all equine breeds.

Participants competed in three different disciplines, Dressage Driving, Cones and the Marathon which was held on

Annie Muilwijk was one of the competitors in the East West driving competition held at the Vermilion Fair Grounds on June 14 and 15. Muilwijk and her team of Friesian horses tore through the course on obstacle number six.

Darlene Copeland and her team of grey mini horses, charged hard through the obstacle in hopes of avoiding to many penalties. The small team rocketed through the course with plenty of room to spare between the gates.

Sunday. The marathon is a combined race of endurance and driving ability as competitors jogged the track and ran a number of obstacles throughout the course.

Local News Vermilion’s Crisis Line Presents A Walk/Run In Memory Of Susan Howard Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Enthusiastic community members began arriving at the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 19 to register for the Fun Walk/Run in Memory of Susan Howard.

This event was organized by the volunteers of the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line.

Arriving at the registration desk, participants were given a T-shirt and pedometer along with refreshments for the journey.

An abundance of coffee and donuts were provided by the local Tim Horton’s and cake was also served after the event, as the Crisis Line was celebrating their anniversary as well.

Donations were accepted whether you were a participant or not. The Vermilion

and Area Crisis Line relies fully on donations to fund their events as the board members are all avid volunteers. Board member Judy Walsh, stressed the importance “We are always looking for and needing volunteers”. Walsh told of last year’s walk, which presented pouring rain stating, “we still had many people show up and we were very grateful”. This year a generous group of people dedicated their time as the registrants flowed in.

Susan Howard was an avid volunteer on the board and was known to many as a hard working, dedicated and generous woman who took great pride in her work.

Howard passed away in 2011. Susan had a dream for a walk/run for the crisis line so the board members decided to make her wish a reality and created the annual event in her memory.

Walsh talked about Howard’s dedication to Vermilion and the many projects she was involved in. Along with the board members, Howard’s family is an active part of the event. Phil Howard, Susan’s husband, spoke of her in a speech to the crowd prior to the walk/run and reminisced about her passion for life and family. Phil began with an introduction of Susan’s grandchildren and finished with a thoughtful wish for everyone to have a good time, remembering to enjoy life, yourself and your family.

“Enjoy every minute of it, and if you are having fun that is one of the main things in life.”

The group headed outdoors and began their treks to show their support for this inspiring event.

Before her leg of the walk, Susan’s mother Kay Warwara said, “I would like to thank the Crisis Line and everyone who came to support this event, as well as my loving family as we honour Susan’s memory.”

Canada Day Brings Celebrations To Vermilion And Surrounding Areas Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

Canada day kicks off with celebrations in Vermilion and surrounding areas on June 30. Many events are going to be happening, with something to suit everyone. Vermilion starts out the celebrations with a pancake breakfast served from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Fire Hall parking lot. Enjoy a toonie beef on a bun lunch on 50th Street between Value Drug Mart and Craig’s at 11:00.

There will be children’s activities and a trade show happening at the Lakeland Mall. You can enjoy an open show from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. back on 50th street between Jellybean’s Hair Studio and Western Financial Group. The 14th annual Bucket brigade happens from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the popular 50th Street.

Community garage sales will be held at Lakeland Mall and the Masonic Hall.

Head down to the Provincial Park Soccer Fields, at 5:00 p.m. for a BBQ Supper, all proceeds going to the fireworks. This will be followed by Old fashioned Family Games and Multicultural Activities with Newcomers to Canada. If Show n’ Shine is your thing then be sure to head to the Prairie Place Parking Lot at 7:00 p.m. for some spectacular sights. Back at the soccer fields there will be a musical performance happening at 8:00 p.m. with singer Amber Bauer. For the children in everyone there is a movie playing at 10:15 p.m. featuring ‘The Muppets Most Wanted’. Fireworks will finish off this eventful day at 12:15 a.m. in

the park. Be sure to join Vermilion for all the Canada Day and Multicultural celebrations.

Kitscoty is celebrating their first event with Kitscoty Day on June 30. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. and going until midnight, there will be a family dance held at the hall. Games for all ages will provide some great entertainment. Fireworks will follow the games, starting at midnight. The cost for this event is $5.00 per person, ages 12 and up. If you get hungry don’t worry, as a concession will be open. July 1 will be a fun filled day with many more activities taking place. 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Games in the park will be held at the Centennial Park, complete with many games and activities for all ages including a Bounce House.

Please note that if the weather is bad these exciting events will still take place, however will be held at the Arena. Following this you can watch grease fire demos in the high school parking lot from 3:30 to 4:15.

Mullen Magic and variety show will provide an hour of entertainment with a Comedy Magic show, beginning at 5:30 p.m. To wrap up the eventful day, a BBQ supper will take place at the hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Burgers and a Canada Day cake dessert will be served. These events are all free however, donations will be accepted.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted Kindergarten Graduation Mr. Haslehurst, along with the Grade two classes, concluded the Roots of Empathy program this week. They had a celebration to thank Baby Archie, Baby Jace, and Baby Maddox for teaching them. Following Alberta Health Services recommendation due to measles, we had our first ever virtual celebration. This celebration was different than previous ones as we used Google to video conference with the babies. Maddox visited us from his living room and walked into his kitchen for us. Baby Archie was playing in his room and we were able to sing the

alphabet song to him, while he pointed to the letters on his wall. Baby Jace was beamed in from Irma for his visit.

The Roots of Empathy program teaches students to value the differences in each other. Through appreciating the differences and participating in caring relationships, we become more accepting and tolerant of others.

VES Kindergarten Grad took place in the gym on June 18 for the KA/KC classes and June 19 for the KB class from 12-1 both days. The kindergarten classes sang a few songs led by Mrs. Bauer, and then the kindergarten students and their families enjoyed a potluck lunch together. Congratulations to the kindergarten students for a year of hard work and fun together. VES is

still accepting kindergarten registrations for the 2014-15 school year. Please let the office know if you are interested in having your child be a part of our VES family in the fall.

With 1,218 books added this year, our library now has 10,649 titles, of which about 80 per cent are Accelerated Reading books. The last day to complete AR quizzes and to return library books was June 13. Our AR celebration day will be on June 26. The VES staff invites all of our families to join us at 11:45 for a picnic lunch. Bring a special meal and a blanket or chair and find a place on the playground for your family to enjoy lunch together. There will also be an assembly at 9 a.m. that morning to recognize students involved in clubs during the

Robson Wrap-Up The annual year end Slo-Pitch Baseball Game took place at Pioneer Park on June 13 for Jr. High and June 18 for Sr. High.

The Junior High got lucky with a sunny afternoon and few mosquitos. The Senior High got caught in the rain but still had a great time. Nothing completes an afternoon of baseball better than hot dogs and freezies courtesy of Mrs. Speck and Mrs. Calynuik with VIBE.

J.R. Robson News The Senior Track team did an outstanding job at Provincials in Calgary on June 5 and 6. Nine students competed in the two-day event where ten provincial records were broken by students throughout Alberta. Senior High Marauders kept a steady pace, remaining in third for most of the competition and ended fifth in the 2A Track and Field Championships. Donovan Yaceyko reached a personal best by jumping 1.75m in High Jump, placing third to bring home the bronze medal. We also

This week is bitter sweet as lockers are cleaned out, halls become quiet, final exams/provincial achievement exams and diplomas are completed. Final report cards for the year will be available on Friday June 27. For the 2014/15 school year we are excited to welcome back Mrs. Jill Innes, Ms. Monica To and two new staff, Ms. Kristy Borysiuk in our Science department and Mr. Earl Weidner in Language Arts.

The Kalyna Country Primary Care Network (PCN) celebrated the completion of the renovations to its office with an open house on June 19 at the office located at 5208 - 46 Avenue, Vermilion.

The Kalyna Country PCN provides a number of programs and services to the community including weight loss and nutrition counselling, medication consultations, diabetes and high blood pressure information, chronic disease management, geriatric clinics and many more services.

The team consists of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians all providing specialized services for patients. Doctor referrals can also be obtained for patients

to see specialists.

The staff gave tours of the renovated office to those in attendance of the open house and an official cake cutting was held with Town of Vermilion Mayor Bruce MacDuff in attendance helping mark the occasion.

E xecutive Direc tor B rian Match addressed the crowd in attendance by saying Kalyna Country PCN serves more than 21,000 patients helping with chronic disease, women’s health and geriatric care over the program’s inception and said “more patients means more funding” for the program.

The Kalyna Country PCN has offices in Vermilion, Vegreville, Viking and most recently, Killam with the addition of a doctor to the team from that community.

College News Lakeland College Student Places Fourth At Skills Canada Competition Lakeland College Submitted Kyle Smith proved that he more than measures up with the top post-secondary carpentry students in Canada.

The apprentice carpenter placed fourth in the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto June 4-7. He qualified for nationals after winning the carpentry event at the Alberta Skills Canada Competition in Edmonton in May. “I was nervous before the competition started but once you get going, you

settle down and focus on the project,” says Smith. He and nine other competitors had 12 hours over two days to construct a 1.2 m wide x 1.8 m long x 2.1 m tall building with a gable roof and an attached bay.

They were judged on quality, accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to safely work to meet a deadline.

While his goal was to reach the podium, the Ashmont, Alta., resident is very satisfied with his placing in the competition.

confidence booster for me,” says Smith.

Lakeland carpentry instructor Curtis Cassibo went with Smith to nationals and was impressed with the 21-year-old’s performance. “For the time he was given to complete the project, I think Kyle really did a good job. He represented our college and Alberta very well,” says Cassibo.

Smith has completed three eight-week technical training periods at Lakeland

and is registered to start his fourth and final training period in January 2015. “I love it at Lakeland. I can’t imagine going anywhere else for my training,” he says.

Smith’s employer is Bryan Reidy, a Lakeland College alumnus and owner of Dalreida Construction in St. Paul.

She does wonderful pencil drawings also.

How about the artist? Many people were very impressed.

He is from St. Albert. This was the second year he attended. Great work.

Another aspect to the ride is that it encourages many to just get out, participate and carry on the joy of being with horses, wagons and nature.

We can't forget to thank the Warrilows for volunteering the route used the past three years, country that is really like back to nature.

How about all those wagons! Curtis has built many great friendships since his accident and it continues to increase. Many people young and older, namely the Warrilows, Darrel Hlus family, Deb Matters have aided in the technical part, computer work, etc. Another great lady, Wendy Harty from Milk River, has assisted Curt in complying his book, soon to be produced.

And we carry on stirring up new ideas for next year. Thank you everyone.

Local News Shriners’ Exceptional Care Odyssey Visits Vermilion This Week Karen Nedzielski Reporter The Al Shamal Shriners’ Exceptional Care Odyssey will be making its way through Vermilion on June 26 to help inform parents from coast-tocoast about the Shriners Hospital for Children-Canada and the specialized orthopedic care it provides infants, children and teens.

The Exceptional Care Odyssey is a red Ford Explorer decorated like a Shrin er ’s Fez an d tassel, which began its journey in Atlantic Canada and traveled westward throughout the north eastern United States and on to western Canada. The odyssey will be making a stop at Lakeland College’s fire training school to meet

with families, town officials and the general public.

The awareness trek will consist of more than 17 thousand kilometers, visiting hundreds of Shriners, 55 cities and towns, over 40 patient representatives and their families, 17 Shrine Temples and other public affairs within Canada and the northern United States.

Shriners H ospital for ChildrenCanada is par t of the 22 Shriners Hospital for Children hospital system, which include hospitals in Galveston, Boston, Sacramento and Cincinnati that deal with burn patients.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children in Alberta helps approximately 200 patients, with 94 of them coming from Northern Alberta.

Donnie Paul with Blackfoot Creek Assessments met with residents and business owners who had questions or needed clarification of the assessments made and also to ensure the assessments are “in line” with where they should be and make sure it is fair and accurate.

Paul says he inspects 20 per cent of the municipality each year based on the permits issued through the Town and knocks on doors to perform the inspections but says the assessments are only a portion of the property tax equation.

From sports to the natural wonders of the world, these students gained invaluable knowledge and insights from numerous activities.

Torin Johre came home from the weekend high school provincial track and field in Calgary our school hero.

Placing sixth in the javelin event, Torin threw 45.59m, better than he had all year long improving his personal best. We are proud to have you on our team, representing Dewberr y.

Awesome job, Torin!

The beginning of the week brought more rain but it didn’t put a damper on Tuesday’s elementary track and field events. Students from three schools; Dewberry, Clandonald and Marwayne participated in running, jumping and throwing events to the best of their abilities. They persevered even though the skies opened up and the air turned chilly. They were troopers and gave it their all! It was great to see the smiles on their faces as they received their ribbons! Junior and senior high students also played

a part by running some of the events, being group leaders and helping with the concession. Thank you to all who participated and helped out to make this a successful day!

Later on in the week the elementary classes ventured out to the Lloydminster Cultural and Science Center.

The Grade 1-3s discovered a world of dinosaurs and the wonders of nature.

I am sure if you ask one of them they could tell you how many students long the Albertasaurus was! Grade 4-6s became involved with the cycle of life, where they got the prospective of producers and primary and secondary consumers. They even got a chance to hold some fabulous creatures of Mother Nature’s! They also participated in a tipi making ceremony and learned the meaning of each pole in a tipi. Finally, they ended off the day with some physical exercise as they par took in some field house activities at the Servus Center.

Now, the students are preparing for final exams and Provincial Achievement Tests. We wish all the students writing, the best of luck!

This week has definitely seen some eyes opened up and new landscapes discovere d but we know that this knowledge seeking will not end there.

We hop e that this will just b e the beginning of their journey of experiences and that it will encourage them, “to boldly go where no man has gone before!”
