The members of the 2014 graduating class of St. Jerome’s School gathered on the steps of the old Vermilion High School, now known as the Vermilion Heritage Museum for one last photo together as their paths will soon take very different directions. Excitement was in the air as the young ladies in their gowns and gentlemen in their suits elegantly posed for photographers. The graduates along with their family and friends attended church service at the Holy Name Catholic Church before heading to the Regional Centre for the official graduation ceremonies. Community Of Dewberry Bands Together For Toddler Karen Nedzielski Reporter A move out west for a piece of the oil riches has taken a drastic turn for one young family after their daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer in the nerve cells that doctors say is very tough to treat.

Nathan Forsman and Brandi MacLellan say their 22 month old daughter Allora, was just a normal toddler, playing

and experiencing the world. On February 6 Allora’s parents said she fell down, landing on her backside and proceeded to cry for approximately a minute and afterwards, seemed to be fine.

About two weeks later she began to limp and at first her parents thought maybe she was experiencing growing pains but as the limp worsened, it began to worry the couple. That is when they remembered the fall and they rushed little Allora to the emergency depart-

The images showed nothing was broken so the doctors thought that she may have sprained something in her hips. The family was told to let her rest and give the toddler Tylenol™ and Advil™ for pain, but her condition just kept worsening. The family returned to the hospital where more extensive x-rays were performed but still, nothing was revealed. They were sent back home and told to continue with rest and pain meds.

Allora’s condition further worsened to the point were she could not hold herself up and became lethargic so for the third time, Allora was rushed back to the hospital where they did more x-rays and still nothing was revealed. The parents questioned the doctors about why she was so lethargic and were told, they could not explain it. Once again the family was sent home.

It was at this point, the couple say they felt they needed a second opinion so they made a visit to a clinic where Allora’s blood was taken and tested. Later that evening the clinic doctor called Nathan from his home and told him that her blood work was very abnormal and did not make any sense and told them to get her back into the emergency as soon as possible. They said at that point they did more blood work and were told that the family was going to be moved to Edmonton. The next morning, March 13, the family hopped into the car and made the early morning drive to Edmonton.

There, they had found a shadow on her multiple x-rays so they performed an ultrasound and once results came back, Nathan and Brandi say they got the very scary “Can I get you guys to take a seat” talk. The doctors explained that they had found a huge mass growing off her right kidney and Allora was going to be admitted.

Nathan and Brandi say it was March 14, the day that changed their lives forever, diagnosis day where they met with the oncology doctors and were told that their baby girl had stage 4 neuroblastoma.

It was the very next day that Allora began chemo treatments, her first cycle of six. Doctors would try to extract stem cells for transplant after three or four cycles depending on how treatment would go, followed by surgery if possible.

Allora would be reassessed to ensure she will be ready to go to Calgary for 50 days for the stem cell transplant. She would then undergo radiation followed by the antibody treatment totalling 18 months

of treatment if everything went well.

Allora has now had two out the six cycles of chemo and a number of blood and platelets transfusions. The treatment she has undergone has been very difficult the couple says as she has gotten very ill and has suffered two very bad infections causing her to be isolated for 11 days because of her vomiting and very bad diarrhea. The vomiting became so bad that even her feeding tube would not stay in place and had to get it put back in a number of times.

Allora has lost a significant amount of weight since beginning her third cycle of chemo on May 6. Her parents say they feel helpless as they sit by and watch their daughter waste away from the disease.

When Allora was born the couple decided to keep Allora’s umbilical cord blood and at the time said it just seemed like a good safety net. Little did they know that the decision made then, may help save little Allora’s life.

Nathan and Brandi said it was a huge let down when they learned there wasn’t enough stored blood and she would still have to undergo the extraction process in Calgary.

Allora was supposed to head to Calgary on May 20 but the transfer has been postponed till the end of the fourth cycle due to her being so ill as currently her condition will not allow her to proceed and she needs to undergo more blood and platelets transfusions.

The family says the illness has caused them great hardship, emotionally, financially and physically. The couple are expected to be at the hospital with their daughter during her time in hospital to perform the daily care Allora needs, forcing Nathan to quit his job to help Brandi care for their daughter.

The medication for Allora’s lifesaving treatment totals more than $3,200 per month not including her daily needs like diapers, formula and food.

The community of Dewberry came together to raise money for the family from Lloydminster, to help with some of the financial medical burden, so they can focus on getting Allora well again.

The small town has set up a trust bank account through the local ATB where anyone wanting to make a donation can do so at any branch in Alberta by using the name Allora.

Nathan and Brandi say they are very grateful for the help and support they have received from the Dewberry area which they say has allowed them to focus on their daughter’s cancer treatments.

A new face to Vermilion decided to take a run for the Chamber lead, as new business owner Amin Tran, presented a formal statement to the members just prior to the vote.

Tran was born in Ottawa but grew up in Western Canada and now calls Vermilion home where he has recently purchased Lakeland Glass, a long-time business of Vermilion.

From becoming Albertanized again at the DMV to a welcoming town council, and new friends at the spring clean up, he said he can only speak positively about this community.

“Combining small business with corporate environments has taught me the value of efficient operations, key pillars of customer service and local community involvement.”

When asked why he chose Lakeland Glass Tran said, “Lakeland Glass has been a Vermilion staple with deep roots and strong foundation. going some upgrades and renovations that will make it more inviting and streamlined for the benefit of our customers and the crew. Tran says the business will continue with its current hours of operations as they work after hours so as not to affect the current operation.

The business will be inviting the community for a barbecue to celebrate its official grand re-opening this summer once the renovations are completed, at which time they say they will extend their business hours for convenience of the community.

Tran was officially sworn in as President at the Annual General Meeting luncheon on May 22. Kovatch will now serve as Past President with Marlene Beatty now serving as one of the Directors.

Marking Achievement Day Karen Nedzielski Editor

4 H a c h i eve m e n t day season is upon us and for many youths from across the area, it is a time of excitement and can also be a time of sadness as they hand over the ownership of their steer projects during the sale process of their 4H year.

With many clubs wrapping up their seasons this week, I was able to attend a number of 4H achievement days lately with a few more yet to come. I always enjoy attending and watching the young members as they go through the motions to display their projects in the best possible manner.

It brings back memories of my youth and the days I spend in the organization. As long as I can remember, I had always been involved in 4H whether it was in the craft, photography, light

horse or the Explore 4H project, I enjoyed everything about being in 4H. I still can remember my very first public speaking piece I recited as a junior, a poem about elephants’ trunks and tails, and can still recite most of it today.

The public speaking element of 4H is an important part of the program and sometimes the most stressful for members. It can find many members c ra m m i n g th e n i g h t b efo re th e i r presentations in preparation. I had always enjoyed public speaking even though I never excelled at it beyond the club level.

The fact is, it has contributed in helping get me to where I am today.

I can stand up in a crowd and speak easily without fear or nervousness.

Achievement day is the day where members display all they have learned over the past year in 4H. For the beef members, they have

spent time learning about feeding the projects and also how to choose an animal with good confirmation for breeding or picking an animal with a good carcass value. Something that is now becoming more of a science rather than just using a “good eye” to choose a calf to be your project for the year. Getting the animal to lead can be difficult and time consuming. When it comes to achievement day, they may require the help of an older member to get that steer around the ring.

The light horse members have spent all winter feeding and training their horses to perform at their best possible level for the judges. Unlike their beef club counterparts, they will not face the tears at the end of achievement day as their projects do not get sold off to the highest bidder. But none the less, it can be an emotional day for them as they work at displaying their projects.

Whether they win their classes or not, the 4H program is designed to teach members to learn to do by doing and in turn, help them gain confidence and skills by seeing results of their hands-on work. Members encourage each other and the older members help the younger ones as they learn the techniques of each project club.

The youth organization has been around for more than 100 years and has helped shape the youth of our country to become productive members of society. I have personally gained so much from the program and encourage everyone to get out and support these young people at their achievement days coming up.

I feel it is a very worth while program and will be heading out to shake the hands of the members, leaders and parents as they have worked hard and did a great job over the past year.

Letter To The Editor Letter In Response To Mr. Leon Benoit’s “Letter to the Editor” Published on May 19 Dear Editor: I was very disappointed in the letter from Leon Benoit, MP, published in the May 19, Vermilion Voice regarding temporary foreign workers.

One may argue that the program is full of problem areas and have a great deal of credibility, but it is misleading in the extreme for the Conservative Party to claim that they are the ones to fix the problems. In fact, the program which began in 1973, operated for 30 years under everyone’s radar, which

really means that in general, it met the needs of Canadians. It is only under the Harper Government that the program became a huge problem.

The Harper Government put into place the provision that foreign workers could be paid 15 per cent less than Canadians. The Harper Government approved the importation of foreign welders who were paid lower wages when there were Canadian welders available. And the current influx of temporary workers into the fast food industry is simply an attempt by the Harper Government to keep wages low and corporate profits high.

For a government that claims that we should let market forces dictate prices and wages, they are actively skewing the market against ordinary workers. If the price of a cup of coffee has to rise ten cents so companies can pay enough to attract workers, that is the market.

If we need more workers in Canada, immigration has been effective in the past. And the Harper Government

should practice what it preaches and let market forces work. It would be far more credible for Mr. Benoit to shoulder the blame for the mess his government created than to point fingers at another MP for trying to access a government program.

The problem with this is that the door is a safety barrier to fire and toxic fumes and deadly gases which often originate in garages. It is not unheard of to find a vehicle running unintentionally in your garage. A child playing with keys is a common culprit for unintentional vehicle starts. It is annoying when the door hits you because of the self-closure but it is nice to know the door is always closed in case of fire and fumes.

Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable May long weekend. It wasn’t the best May long weekend I have seen weather wise, it was cool, windy and rain for most of mine.

However, as I am sure I have mentioned before, it certainly wasn’t as bad as some years I have seen. Also, I recall one May long weekend where I had to build a snow shelter in a six foot snow drift.

So all in all it wasn’t terrible…I don’t know who it is, or was that stated that May long weekend was the weekend to put in our gardens, I do believe they live/lived a lot farther south than we do here in the Midwest.

Actually Saturday was very nice as far

as May long weekends go. The sun made an appearance and it wasn’t terribly cool and if I had the garden tilled I could have buried all my seed potatoes.

But unfortunately my tiller is down and waiting for a part, which just means I will most likely have to do it this coming weekend, maybe it wasn’t all that unfortunate, as its back breaking work.

There was also a lot of yard work that could be done, but my bow hunting buddy Blaine stopped in to visit, or most likely he was running from back breaking chores also.

And here we both did not want to be unsociable by doing much needed yard chores, and it just so happened that I had three brand spanking new tree-stands still in the box just sitting there.

So we decided we would assemble them and perhaps attach them each in a tree

somewhere to air out before bow hunting season, well this shouldn’t take long…right?

These tree stands are what is called ladder stands, essentially a long metal ladder with a seat and foot platform at the top-how hard could this be? We figured we would be on the road in more minutes.

Well folks, as we dumped all the parts and pieces, we just kinda looked at each other…now the bottom sections of ladder were just that, five foot sections of ladder.

The top section was a much different matter, it has the seat, platform, arm rests, safety rails etc. and one huge bag of bolts and nuts…in more different thicknesses and lengths than I could count.

It took us fifteen minutes just to try to make sense of all the parts and pieces, now these two were just small standard stands the third was a huge complicated type that would seat two comfortably.

Nothing made sense, so I will apologise to all the men out there right now and admit we had to do the unthinkable, we cut open the final bag that held the instruction manual.

Yes ladies we actually opened and followed the directions, even then it was no easy feat, so with all kind of wrenches and sockets we got to work, after the first hour we stood proudly over first our stand.

I heard Blaine mumbling something about “things just should not be attempted without power tools” I laughed at him and grabbed the wrenches.

About a half an hour later when I scraped all the skin off the last knuckle of every joint on my right hand, I threw that wrench to places yet discovered, it was then I remembered something.

My darling wife bought me an air compressor one Christmas and it came

with every power tool imaginable…so now to find it in that special spot where it would never get lost.

After only 20 minutes I found it and held in my hand a shiny new “Binford 2000” heavy duty air ratchet power tool…ohh ohh ohhh, wow I will never use a hand tool again…ha ha.

We were done the biggest stand in under an hour and soon were on our way to find a tree for its best friend, every time I used to have to assemble one of those ‘so easy to assemble A child could do it” I pictured a wife standing there tapping her foot with a manual in her hand.

That’s not the case anymore now I picture a wife standing there tapping her foot with a manual in one hand and a big shiny ‘Binford 2000” power tool in the other.

After exploring and enjoying the outdoors we found a home for all the tree stands. I’m actually already excited to sit in all of them for many hours enjoying our outdoor world.

One reason I wanted the stands out now was it is a lot easier to do without full foliage of green leaves, this is now May 21 and we are yet to see trees with full bloom leaves, very late spring, but it’s spring get outdoors and make adventures.

When the Smoke Clears Women wonder why us men won’t read an instruction manual or ask for directions…simple…women don’t come with instruction manuals, even if they did we wouldn’t understand women or any direction anyway.

Transportation to Caregiver is subject to availability. Privileges may be revoked if space becomes an issue. The caregiver’s residence must be in the student’s designated transportation (attendance) area. Fees will not be pro-rated for am or pm only for Transportation to Caregiver as we are reserving a seat for your child on the bus. Students who ride two different buses will be required to pay an additional fee.

RURAL BUSSING All new rural students and ECS students must register for bussing.

YARD SERVICE Yard service (door service) is available for a fee if the bus route does not start before 7:30 a.m. Application forms can be found on the website and service must be applied for annually.

I fin d it ha rd to realize I’m in the old timer mode nowadays it seems such a short time ago that I was a young sprout doing chores and building up my stamina and experience so I could do a man’s work. Seems like I wasn’t even a teenager yet and there I was, expected to basically do the same work as a man.

Seems we were all required to lift a part of the load that had to be carried to survive, that’s the way things were back then!

Kids were pressed into service to help get the horses in so they could be hooked up and keep the chores done so the men could do the field work. I remember those days so well. After we got the little Ford 9N, brother and I did a lot of field work, except for seeding.

We even summer followed and changed plow shears on our own. Ten acres was a big day with a two bottom plow. By the time bro and I were in our mid teens we were driving our Fordson Major diesel and basically did most of the field work with Dad’s direction, and he did the chores and all the details of getting the seed ready etc.

Elmer and I overhauled engines and even built a new truck box on our new two ton truck. We put our new binder together and all that kind of things. By that time we cut all the crops and did most of the haying and stacked the Greenfield and hauled the bundles to the threshing machines. We had lots of athletic abilities and played ball at every opportunity. We could jog, trot for miles and I can remember my brother as a man who could have been a major leaguer. He sure had the talent.

You know we never were exposed to a T.V. or any other electronic gizmo or game. We were so glad of our abilities to do and work hard. I can remember making those little round bales heavier than most could handle easily and thought we were saving twine, didn’t even consider that we would do ourselves injury being so crazy.

It seems though now after years of hydraulic technologies that took a lot of work from so much of the heavier jobs that used to be, that a lot less strength is required, and it is not fashionable to do things the hard way anymore.

Human nature being what it is we are apt to take the easier path. Who could blame us?

In my early days the only mice game we had ran out from under the stooks,

and we often dispatched them and put them in a pocket to take home for the cats. Yes we put special emphasis on our strength and ability to work at strenuous jobs and keeping fit. I guess that doesn’t fit nowadays as now you need the ability more than ever before to program your G.P.S. and tune in your computer skills to help get your tractor, combine or air seeder, sprayer, etc., to even do the basic tasks anymore.

Stamina and athletic abilities would seem secondary anymore, in my estimation anyway.

I see instances of frustration sweeping into the whole scheme of things as we get further and further away from the land itself, and rely more and more on science for chemicals, and things beyond our knowledge and control.

Seems as though we’re programmed to fail and we’re made to believe we’re still in control and can survive. Hard to believe the powers that be have taken so many steps to make the small family farm less viable and able to grow food on a small scale. No more cream chequesmust have a quota. No more outside hogs, must have government inspected barns. No more free range chickens, they just don’t do that anymore. In my early times, the little farms were what fed the towns on any suplus they may have raised, and that even applied to potatoes and veggies too.

Look around now, if we hit a similar time like “1929” or if the price of fuel makes the price of hauling our groceries into stock our mega supermarkets, I’d like to hear from some economist where is our food going to come from in

About ten days ago, I received an unexpected email message. The purported sender was a writer from Hobbema---Maskwacis (Cree for Bear Hills, I think) as of January 1, 2014----who, when I met her in 2011, had been conducting extensive research about her community and its unsettling history. Maskwacis, with a population of roughly 12,500, consists of four First Nations that include the Samson Cree Nation, the Ermineskin

Cree Nation, the Louis Bull Tribe, and the Montana First Nation.

For those familiar with it, the name Hobbema has for a long while conjured up a juxtaposition of enormous oil wealth, boarded up crack houses, an alarming rate of gang-related violence, and far too many deaths. It’s a dangerous place to live, as my friend acknowledged.

That she intended to write about her community from her unique perspective as a former resident took a lot of courage. Her intention was to write a closeup, raw, insightful account and I had no

doubt that she would follow through. She spoke of her project with the determination and commitment of someone on a personal quest.

Maybe the combination of my interest in the subject and the recollection of her descriptions of events she witnessed contributed to my stepping off the cliff into jeopardy. Her email, although arriving out of nowhere after a long period of silence, piqued my interest. Perhaps, I thought, she’s finished the book and wants me to know. I hesitated, then temporarily threw caution to the wind and clicked on the link in the message.

It’s always unwise to act in a manner counter to your own instincts. Repeat that to yourself a few times right now. I certainly have done so over the past few days. While you’re at it, give your ego a virtual slap to let it know you won’t fall for any of its mischievous folly.

In less than five seconds, I opened myself up to a malady of chaos. To every contact I had ever communicated with since initiating that particular email account about ten years ago, nonsensical missives were launched at 3:35 a.m. on alternating days, all of them pulsing with an infectious virus intended to wreak havoc.

This week, I’ve been re-informing myself about the crap that a malicious sector of capable and intelligent software developers continue to perfect in order to toy with us, the foolish and vulnerable public. I doubt there exists

such a thing as over-informing yourself when it comes to malware. It’s a continuing, corrupt train on a fast track looking to collide with your curiosity.

If you’re in the mood for some shock and awe concerning how deep and sinister the worst of these programs can become, search “Blackshades”. Then read and shiver.

Being hacked brings on all kinds of reactions and necessary actions. The abrupt alertness to the violation of your privacy. Alarm while considering how deep the infiltration might reach. The big fat hassle of having to inform all of your important contacts of the breach.

Locking down all links to the infected account. Deletion of said account. Password changes across the board.

What is good about it, if anything?

Well, I’ve found it’s not unreasonably paranoid to be a minimalist when it comes to inputting personal information online. Hackers won’t get a lot from digging into any of my accounts except maybe a dullard’s delight of reading a few benign exchanges between me and my contacts.

I’ve probably lost track of a few addresses in the tumultuous transition, but that might not be such a tragedy.

Thank you, hackers, for providing me with the impetus to begin anew. If I knew where to find you, I’d surely send you a personalized word of appreciation.

Marshmallows T h e h i s to r y o f marshmallows goes back to ancient Egypt, where it was a rare food reserved for the Pharaohs and their gods. Back then the sap of the marsh mellow plant, sugar and beaten egg whites were used to make this ancient treasured confection.

I recently made some homemade marshmallows. It was with great curiosity that I began my attempt and to my amazement they turned out wonderfully well, the first try. These homemade marshmallows are not as sweet as the commercially manufactured ones. They have a delicate and lovely flavor. They are made with simple ingredients. You can vary the

recipe to create your own gourmet marshmallows.

They can be flavoured with any extract such as peppermint or almond instead of the vanilla. They can be rolled in cocoa powder or cinnamon, which I tested, and they were excellent. You could also add a few drops of food coloring for pretty pastel coloured treats. They can be rolled in regular or toasted coconut. Cocoa p ow d e r c a n b e a d d e d to th e p o t with the sugar for yummy chocolate marshmallows, finished with a cocoa powder dusting.

With campfire season just around the corner, this would be a fun recipe for parents or grandparents to try with a creative young cook. I have not tried them for camp fire roasting or Rice Crispy cake yet. These marshmallows would also be nice served for a Tea or a Shower.

Marshmallows 2 packages of Knox gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 2/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup water 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla In a small bowl mix the cornstarch and icing sugar powders together.

Line a 5 x 9.5” loaf pan with wax paper. Lightly butter the wax paper.

Dust the buttered wax paper with a little of the cornstarch and icing sugar mixture. Combine the 1/3 cup water and the sugar in a pot and cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.

At the same time, in a small bowl co m bin e th e g elatin a n d th e cold water, stirring with a fork. Add the gelatin mixture to the dissolved sugar mixture in the pot and cook, stirring

Former Rustler Volleyball Star Recently Inducted Into ACAC Hall Of Fame Lakeland College Submitted It’s fitting that volleyball was the reason Michele (G enereux) Prince was unable to attend her induction ceremony into the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Hall of Fame.

The former Lakeland College Rustler volleyball standout missed the May 10 ceremony because she was coaching her dau ghter ’s U18 volleyball team at the Canadian Open in Edmonton.

“I would have loved to have been there. I was so surprised to be named to the Hall of Fame. It really means a lot to me to be recognized for my play while at Lakeland. I have lots of great memories of our teams and of the college. I was on my own for the first time - I grew up quickly during my two years there,” says Prince, who graduated from Lakeland College in 1987.

Coach David Kaye recruited Prince while she was in high school in Edmonton. Unsure of what she wanted to do in the future, she took a year off from school before committing to the Rustlers in 1985. “I wanted to get

out of Edmonton and my sister lived in the Vermilion area. I called David and asked if he was still interested in me playing at Lakeland. He told me he was so away I went,” says Prince.

She enrolled in the appraisal and assessment program at the Vermilion campus.

“We didn’t have a lot of players on our team but we did very well. One of the biggest highlights was that we got ranked nationally. That was great for our program,” says Prince, recalling how the gymnasium would fill with students, many armed with garbage can lids and wooden spoons to make noise to rattle the opposition.

The 5’7” setter was a huge part of the team’s success and her outstanding play earned her ACAC All Conference and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association All Canadian honours d u r i n g t h e 19 8 5 - 8 6 a n d 19 8 6 87 seasons. While the Rustlers had winning records those seasons, hopes of winning an ACAC championship were thwarted by the Red Deer College Queens who were in the midst of eight consecutive ACAC women’s volleyball titles.

After graduating from Lakeland, Prince played three seasons for the

University of Calgary Dinos and then moved to Switzerlan d to play p ro volleyball for a season. She returned to Calgary in 1991 to coach volleyball at Mount Royal College and was with the team until 1998. It was during that decade that she married Keal Prince who is also an avid volleyball player.

Both continue to play the sport.

Not surprisingly, the couple’s children − daughter Elly and son Keal − also play volleyball. Austin Dyer, the coach of Lakeland’s women’s volleyball team, approached Elly (also a setter) about playing for the Rustlers after she graduates from high school this year.

“Aus tin a n d his crew a re really doing an amazing job at Lakeland with the team. It would be pretty neat if Elly did play for (the Rustlers) but she’s really undecided about what she wants to do,” says Prince.

Prince was one of 50 people including 15 athletes inducted into the ACAC Hall of Fame as part of the conference’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Former Rustler coaches Les Parsons (women’s volleyball) and Phil Allen (men’s basketball) were also inducted.

Local News Vermilion Area Garden Club Raises Funds For Thirtieth Anniversary Karen Nedzielski Reporter The Vermilion Area Garden Club held its annual fundraiser this past week at the Vermilion Farmers market on May 20 as they had a table full of gardening goodies available for purchase. The items varied from different types of flowering bulbs and ornamental grasses to lilies and seed potatoes.

The club’s President Alice Stafinski, said they had a number of people drop off items from gardens in the Vermilion area both from members and non-members of

the club.

Pam Young, left, and Donna Niedzielski were busy preparing lunch for the students and staff of VES’ hot lunch program. On the menu the day of the Voice’s visit was cream of vegetable soup, chicken pitas and honeydew melon served with juice or milk. The two ladies do the majority of the preparation of the meals but have parent volunteers help with serving and clean up. The meals are available at the school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday by ordering in advance, with each meal costing $3.50. The money collected helps support the 220 - 300 lunch meals each day, as well as through donations from the public.

Many area cattle producers have been busy sorting and hauling they livestock to their summer pastures for grazing, some using local community pastures.

Last week the Minburn Grazing Reserve was busy accepting cattle as patrons brought their cow-calf pairs in by the trailer loads. The Minburn pasture held three in-take days for the breed specific groups. Monday saw the Hereford pasture fill up, Tuesday was the Simmental and Wednesday was the Charolais herd’s day.

Approximately 1,500 cow-calf pairs and dozens of breeding bulls are accepted each year from the more than 50 registered patrons. Animals must meet the pasture’s standards for health management and must also be appropriately tagged according to their owner’s assigned identity number as well as properly branded. Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted All of our grade 4 and 5 students were bussed to the college on May 20 so they could partake in the Farm Safety presentations, sponsored by ADM and Progressive Agriculture. Some of the safety topics included electricity, ATVs,

farm equipment, grain, chemicals, fire, and farm animals. Students were encouraged to learn their addresses or land locations in case of a 911 emergency, and to speak with their parents about fire alarms and CO2 alarms in their homes. In the ATV presentation, the presenters reviewed hand signals necessary for riding an ATV and bicycle. Students came back to school with a lot of excitement and stories.

We had an AR Assembly on May 21.

Mr. Neil Blue and Mr. Denny Martens presented certificates to eight students on behalf of the Rural Crime Watch poster contest. The grade 3 students did a choral reading and 2A and 6B presented some fairy tale trailers they made on their IPads.

Collectively VES students have reached 13 250 AR points, so both Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty will have their hair dyed on the June 26 AR Day. This year’s major field trips begin on May 29 when the grade 2 students head up to St. Albert for the Children’s Festival and the grade 4s take a trip back in time when they visit Fort Edmonton. Grade 1 will take their annual trip to the Paradise Valley Climb Through Time Museum on June 2, and on June 9 and 10 the grade 6 classes will enjoy some outdoor time at Camp Encounter. Grade 5 go to the Telus World of Science on June 19, and then on June 20, the grade 3 students travel to the Ukrainian Cultural Village.

Health officials in Alberta are very concerned about recent outbreaks of measles in Edmonton, Calgary and Central Alberta. The Medical Officers of Health from Alberta Health Services recommend the following: “Our recommendation is that no infants less than one year of age go into classrooms for the duration of the measles outbreak. This includes infants who have had a pre-12 month immunization.”

Based on the above, the Roots of Empathy organization has decided that, in the interests of the safety of our Roots of Empathy babies, we need to respond.

Therefore, no more Family Visits will be delivered.

Robson Track Stars J.R. Robson is proud to be the home of the Vermilion District Team Track and Field Champions! A huge Marauder cheer goes out to the Senior High Track Team who did a phenomenal job at the Lloydminster District Meet. Our Track and Field athletes are Chad Andreychuk, Thomas Brodbin, Adam Evans, Shanna Gould, Morgan MacMillan, Julia McCrae, Julia McKimmon, Trisha Mead, Beaudon Rogers, Graeson Rogers, Ryley Schmahl, Cassidy Stepaniuk, Ashley Wagner, Cameron Webb, Riley White, Trace Wilhelm, Jake Wynny-

chuk & Donovan Yaceyko.

Thomas Brodbin and Julia McKimmon placed first in all four of their events.

Cameron Webb did not even hesitate when asked how many laps he ran in total all day, “15 ¼ laps, it was a great day” he reported.

These 19 competitors, our highest number of participants, achieved 777.50 team points overall taking the championship title away from Lloydminster Comp with a score of 754. This is a first for Marauders. Many student athletes also achieved new personal bests at Districts.

The whole team will be attending the Zone Finals in St Paul on Wed. May 28.

On Monday, June 2 we have future Marauders visiting our school for the entire day. Grade 6 Orientation Day or as we like to call it ‘A Day in the Life of a Seventh Grader’ takes place. This means our current Grade 7 class has the day off to study and clean their bedrooms of course, so we can give the Grade 6s the full experience. They will learn the routine of finding classrooms, moving from class to class, check out the cafeteria and more.

Mrs. Kaye, our Grade 7 Language Arts and Social teacher is planning on doing a “get to know me” page in LA and a fun trivia game in Social on Canadian History. It is bound to be a fun day.

Senior High students will be writing English part A and Social diploma exams on June 12 and 13. Other scheduled Sr. High Exams will continue until June 26.

ATB’s “Help Save The Day” Fundraiser

Vermilion’s ATB Financial held a fundraiser barbecue on May 23 at the Co-op parking lot, in support of three Alberta charities, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Teddy for a Toonie program. Mya suffered a head injury during a day of tobogganing with her family just over a year ago.

Vermilion 4H Beef Achievement Day

On May 25 and 26 the Vermilion 4H Beef Club held its annual Achievement Days at the Vermilion Fairgrounds, where members of the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions from Vermilion and Clandonald had the opportunity to show their steers to prospective buyers at the sale which will be held today, May 26.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigewitch Submitted

Mannville Students Wrap Up Swimming We forgot to mention the names of our camera and light crew at the Spring Exercises. Keeping everything running smoothly for the graduates were Mr. Darryl Maron, Sam Rutt, Shayne Heward, Shawn Heward and Curtis Ludwig. We also appreciated having Mr. Stockal in, making sure all the sound and light equipment was in top running shape for the evening.

Mrs. Thompson’s Grade 2 class have started practicing their measuring skills in math. They are using standard and nonstandard units to measure all kinds of items around the classroom.

The students were excited to watch Painted Lady caterpillars go through their life cycle as they changed into chrysalides and then into beautiful butterflies. They enjoyed watching the butterflies flutter to find new homes when they were released.

Mrs. Campbell and the Grade 4 social class have been busy learning about settlers in Alberta. They recently

enjoyed making biscuits and butter from scratch and eating them with homemade raspberry jam. On May 15 the students took a field trip to the Mannville Historical Telephone Exchange and Mannville Museum and learned many fascinating facts about our pioneer days. For example, Mrs. Rutherford, Mannville’s switchboard operator for forty eight years, was on call twenty four hours a day and had a bed right beside the switchboard! Thank you to Mrs. Lillian Konieczny for guiding them on the tours.

On May 20 Miss Cusack’s Grade 5 class went on a field trip to Lakeland College. They attended the ADM Progressive Ag Safety Days. At the Safety Days they participated in various safety sessions. Each session was 12 minutes in length and covered a particular area of agricultural safety. The different sessions included chemical safety, first aid, ATV/ small machinery safety, fire safety, animal safety, grain safety, electricity safety, and machinery safety. Each session was very educational and very engaging for all of the students. At the end of our sessions they were served lunch and each student

After the Ag Safety Days they went to the swimming pool for their second last day of swimming lessons. Their last day of lessons was on May 22. They all learned lots about swimming and it was great to see all the students able to swim in the deep end without lifejackets!

Representing our school at the senior high districts in Lloydminster were Danny Ludwig, Jaden Tod, Chelsea Baker, Stephen Baker and Brandan Lyster. Any

competitors who achieve third place, or better, advance to the next level which is Zones. Three of our high school students are off to the senior high track and field zones in St. Paul: Danny Ludwig (junior) for placing third in Javelin and Long Jump, Steven Baker (intermediate) for second in the 3000 meter run and Brandon Lyster (senior) for second in the 3,000 meter and third in discus.

Clandonald 4H Achievement Day

The Clandonald 4H Clubs held their Achievement Day on May 24 as the members of the beef, light horse, creative options and singing projects participated by showing the crowd in attendance everything they have learned throughout the year. The husband and wife judging team of John and Heather Barr judged the beef classes with John judging the conformation aspect and Heather judging the showmanship and grooming. The Clandonald club has 14 members in total including the 6 Cleaver members. The beef members traveled with their projects to participate in the Interclub competition held the following day in Vermilion.

The Junior Heifer class of the Clandonald 4H Club proved to be a close call for judge John Barr as he picked out his chosen winner. It was Robyn Axley’s Black Angus cross heifer who would take the class over Logan Garnie.

Test Drives At Wilter’s Demo Day

Wilter Auto and Industrial Supply held a Husqvarna Demo Day at their Bumper To Bumper Building in Vermilion on Saturday, May 24. Customers could stop by and try some of the products before making a decision to purchase. One such customer was Mel Dary of Vermilion, left photo, as he tested out a chainsaw and after meeting his approval, he made the purchase. A barbecue lunch was served to customers with the funds raised going to the Buffalo Trail schools’ cooking class.

On April 23 we had our sign making

workshop and everyone made some really nice signs. On May 17 we had mock achievement. Everyone’s calves lead really well. May 23 will be clean up and May 28 will be our achievement day. Everyone is welcome to attend and support our beef club members.

Our next meeting will be held June 4 at the Innisfree Millennium Building at 7 p.m.

Congratulations to the St. Jerome’s Graduating Class of 2014. It has been a very busy, yet exciting, week for the graduates. On Thursday they were treated to a delicious breakfast prepared by Grade 10 students Jessica Kingston, Bailey Koebel, and Ryan Sherwood. Later that morning they dressed in their Cap and Gowns for pictures in front of the school. The entire school gathered to in the gym to honour our graduating class. The grads were presented with cards created by the elementary students, scrolls from the staff, and cups filled with starbursts from the Grade 10 Leadership class. Vermilion Seniors’ Centre News Sylvia Preteau Submitted Everywhere in our lives, flowers bloom.

Time brings roses.

Walking into the Seniors’ Centre a few days ago, it was hard to ignore the beautiful tulips in bloom and the other healthy perennials. They tell me that Arleigh Stone is the lady that tends to these flower beds keeping them free of those pesty weeds.

Paul Mistal waters the flowers when necessary. These flower beds just add something special which makes our Centre more homey and inviting.

On May 5 Doreen McIntyre and Mary Maggs served 48 seniors cake and ice cream after floor curling. May seems to be a popular month for birthdays and anniversaries. Next month on June 2 the seniors will have two individuals providing useful information on health and safety issues relevant to all ages after curling and co-in-siding with the birthday and anniversary cake celebration.

The “Happy Harmonizers” held their spring celebration on May 7. Their songs were of flowers, some being “Daisy-aDay, Rambling Rose, Edelweiss”. The Touch of Brass played the hand-bells. The quartet comprising of Leslie Bruce, Bonnie Marsh, Doreen Ford and Dixie Farkash was enjoyed by the crowd. A wonderful lunch was served that evening.

Crib Doubles took place on May 8 with 15 tables in play. Each table had four players so lunch was provided for 60 individuals. The day flew by with six games played in the morning another six after lunch. The

final scores were real high this time with first, second and third being very close so competition was strong. Next tournament will be June 12.

Mother’s Day is always special to mothers no matter what age. Many mothers were taken out for lunch or dinner or received a lovely bouquet of flowers.

Mother’s Day has been around for a long time, the first being celebrated in the U.S. in 1908.

Our Executive Meeting was held on May 13. One of the objectives of the Executive is to update the bylaws. Special guest Alice Stafinski, was invited to attend our meeting. Alice has just recently spent many hours updating bylaws for another organization and graciously offered assistance to anyone wanting to update theirs.

This is a job not enjoyed by everyone or even appreciated by many until a problem arises. Keeping bylaws current and relevant is just good practice for any organization.

Potluck night was on May 14. Over 50 people attended, not sure if it was because it was a beautiful day or whether it was because there won’t be another until September. There was a nice variety of food and it was good to the last bite. Eva Hess and Marj Osinchuk were this month’s kitchen conveners. For some reason, those dishes always need to be washed and put away!

A number of female members of the Seniors’ Centre also belong to another organization called the “Red Hats Society”. Their Mission Statement states they are a global society that connects,

The VerMillion Belles, our Red Hat Chapter, held their first Spring Fling Luncheon in the Seniors’ Centre on May 15. The Centre was buzzing with all the activities that needed to take place to make this endeavour a success.

On May 2ls, St. Paul is hosting the Alberta 55+ Military Whist Tournament and Vermilion Seniors will be attending.

The Mini Summer Games are being held in Bonnyville on June 24, 25 and 26. It will be exciting to see what prizes can be returned

to Vermilion.

Friday, May 30 plans are underway to hold another Military Whist Tournament at the Centre. Fliers have been forwarded to all neighboring whist players for registration. After this tournament, another Whist Tournament will not take place until September. Some of the other afternoon card get-togethers will also be resurrected in September. Summer activities and travel plans will take priority by many.

Registration is now being accepted for the July 1 Crib Doubles. Many enjoyed this activity last Dominion Day. The regular Crib Doubles will still in held the second Thursday of July.

Vermilion Quilters Quilt Show 2014 Janice Jones, Vermilion Quilters Guild Submitted The Vermilion Quilters Guild seventeenth annual Quilt Show was held on May 4 and 5 at the Regional Centre. Vermilion Quilters began as a group in 1997 when18 women organized together to learn to quilt. Initially they met at the Lakeland Mall meeting in an empty store bay. That year they hosted their first quilt show held at Lakeland Mall. As more quilters joined and more quilts were created a larger venue was needed so the show was moved to the Seniors Center then to the Vermilion Elementary School gym. Since 2008 the quilt show has been at the Regional Centre.

In 2001 the Vermilion Quilters became an official quilt guild. It also became a part of the national Canadian Quilters Guild; membership at that time was 24 members. Now the membership is at 45 members.

The quilt show is open to all quilters, whether part of the guild or not, to share the projects they have completed during the year. With over two hundred quilts of various sizes on display, attendees saw a visual delight of color and fabric, which included large bed quilts, lap quilts, baby quilts, art quilts, table runners, tree skirts, placemats and wall hangings. Techniques used varied from traditional quilt patterns and hand quilting, machine embroidery, paper piecing, long arm quilting, fabric dying, batiking and fabric painting.

Local entertainers from music students to talented adults volunteer their talents, singing and playing musical instruments softly in the background.

The Feature Quilter this year was Marlene Lawrence, a member since 1999. Marlene had a wonderful display of the many beautiful quilts and small projects that she has completed over the years – including her beginning projects.

Of special interest in her display were the pedal operated Singer sewing machines that she demoed. Marlene readily invited spectators to try the machines themselves.

The winners of viewer’s choice this year were: First Place Large - Marilyn Stewart for Glacier Star, Second Place Large - Rosanne Dutchak for Super Nova Bargello. First Place Small - Beryl Tovell for Feathered Star, Second Place Small Marlene Lawrence for Blessings of Winter.

Viewer’s choice for the Modern Challenge - Lori Carlson for Sawblade.

Thank you to the Guild, Extraordinary Extras and Village Treasurers for sponsoring gifts to the viewer’s choice winners.

Each year the Guild members make quilts to donate to a chosen organization.

This year the quilts were donated to the The Edmonton Stollery Children’s Hospital. The Postcard club had a display of the cards that members have made this year.

A new feature this year was a demo of the steps in making a quilt. This was done by Darlene Barlow. All in all, it was another very successful quilt show.

U6 - U8 Take Over Vermilion Soccer Fields On Saturday

The U6 and U8 soccer players took to the Vermilion Soccer Pitches last Saturday as the Vermilion Soccer Association held its U6/U8 Mini Tournament. The tournament had 17 - U6 and 19 - U8 teams attend from Mundare, Vegreville, Provost, St. Paul, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Wainwright, Viking, Two Hills as well as Vermilion. With the number of teams participating up from last year, more than 650 players laced-up their cleats for the tournament. The Vermilion and Area Rural Crime Watch Association presented the Grade 4 winners poster contest winners of VES with their certificates and prizes at the May 21 school assembly. Vermilion Outreach School Graduation

The Vermilion Outreach School graduation may have faced a power outage during their ceremonies on May 23, but the graduates of 2014 were all charged up to mark the end of the high school journey. For most it was filled with excitement and laughter but there were also a few tears shed as nine of the eleven students participating, heard from delegates of Buffalo Trails Public School as well as local government.
