Crashing End For Former Edge Building

The former Edge Youth Drop-in centre came crashing down on April 21 as the demolition crew moved in. In a matter of minutes the building was reduced to rubble and the remnants were hauled away, leaving an empty lot ready for the new owners to begin construction. The building served as the Alliance Church from 1942 until 1986 when it was sold to Baby Hugs Day Care and Nursery that operated until 1996. Tidbits and Tea, a tea house with antiques, was the next business to set up shop from 1997 to 2003. Once again, the Alliance Church found their way back to the location where it served as the Church’s office, Downtown Ministry Centre and Edge Youth Drop-in Centre. In 2013 the Church had the old theatre building given to them which they renovated to become their new office and youth centre. Again, the building’s ownership has changed hands. The name of the new property owner remains a bit of a mystery as well as what will become of the lot. Photo Karen Nedzielski.

Methane Leak Has Brennan Residents Concerned Karen Nedzielski Reporter It appears that an old, abandoned gas well, proven to be leaking, has a number of residents in the Brennan subdivision concerned as they say efforts to resolve the leak are slow and non-progressive.

The well in question sits adjacent to a home and also sits right next to a children’s playground. The well is clearly marked as dangerous and is completely fenced-off.

According to the Abandoned Well Association, Tenwell No. 1 was drilled in 1935 by the former Tenwell Gas & Oil Company and at the time of drilling, the well did not show any strong promise of oil or gas and was abandoned in 1942.

It appears the well casing was pulled to be used during the war efforts and the well was then forgotten about until June of 2013. The well was located, tested and identified as leaking small amounts of methane gas according to the Abandoned Well Association.

In July of 2013 the Association began performing monthly tests on the well to confirm there were no public safety issues including soil gas testing in the area around the well.

The Association, working on behalf of the Crown under the direction of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), contacted the adjacent homeowners to test their properties in what they say, was to confirm there was no reason for concern. The Association says methane gas is odourless, colourless and nontoxic.

In August of 2013, a soil gas management system was installed in the ground surrounding the well site to help direct the methane safely into the atmosphere.

Last October the well casing stub was located and extended to the surface where the well itself was covered and the area was fenced off. The Orphaned Well Association says they found no gas coming from the inside casing itself.

On Sunday, December 15, 2013, our Dad, Lloyd Howard, passed away at the age of 91 years. He will always be remembered as a loving, March 24, 1922 - December 15, 2013 caring and proud husband, Dad, grandfather and great-grandfather affectionately known as "Pa,"' son, brother, uncle, Royal Canadian Airforce Airman and friend.

Dad was a proud and private man whose passion for cattle, farming and his family were evident every day. He was a man who always had a mischievous twinkle in his eye, said few words, kept his opinions to himself and lived by the motto "Do unto others as you would have do unto you."

As his four children, Laverne (Otto) Boye of Cambridge, ON; Phil Howard, Marilyn (Brent) Usenik and Susan(Calvin) Kochan of Vermil Vermilion, AB; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who gave so generously of their kindness, time and expressions of sympathy during our time of loss. Your phonecalls, visits, cards, flowers, food and memorial donations were and are very much appreciated. Thank you to Pastor Bryce Ashlin-Mayo and to Legion Members Gordon Hills and Reverend Major Aubrey Bell for your comfort comforting contributions to the service; to Keri Pullyblank, Sheila Seward, Harold Pullyblank and Jim Tovell for providing music, being the song worship leader and soloist; to Harry and Alva Creech of Crossroads Funeral Chapel for your empathy and guidance in making the arrangements; and to Doug and Cheryl Livingstone for preparing the buffet lunch. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Vermilion Health Care Complex and Valley Lodge - especially the Cedar House staff. In lieu of distributing thank you cards, we will make a donation to the Vermilion Valley Lodge.

Although we are profoundly sad, we are comforted knowing that Dad can now rest in comfort and peace and that he has joined Mom and other family members. So we say farewell until we meet again.

OBITUARY Orlene (Omness) Whalen passed away peacefully on April 21, 2014, in London, Ontario.

Loving mother to her 6 children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her sister Della Walsh, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Orley & Ellen Omness and her sister Hilda Wilson. The memorial service was held on April 26 in Ont.

with homeowners and leaving information on the well and the plans to have it excavated.

The home which sits right next to the leaking well is that of Colin and Jesse Anning. The couple purchased the lot privately with the intentions of building the house and upon completion, selling it.

The construction began in March of 2012 and in October of that year the couple moved into their first home together. The Annings thought by the summer of 2013 they would be able to complete the landscaping of the yard and by this spring the house would be ready to be put up for sale.

With the discovery of the well and its leak, the Annings have been unable to complete the yard work and now may be facing an oil rig moving into their back yard to help cap the old well. The Orphan Well Association has asked if they could remove the deck on the back of their house to make room for the service rig and notified them that they may be forced out of their home for up to three weeks until the process is complete.

The Annings main concern now is the sale of the home as they feel it will now be hard to sell a home that sits next to an old, leaking gas well and the risks that come with it. The couple has been in contact with the Town and the Orphan Well Association but feel the process is taking too long to resolve and it may be another year before they can complete the work on the home and move forward with the sale process, if they can find a buyer for it.

informed of the well during the purchasing process and had they known about it, would have looked at another location to build their home. They say they are not willing to take a loss on the property value because of an oversight on someone else’s part, during the original subdivision process.

The Association says they have developed a technical program to attempt potential re-entry and repair of the well and has submitted a program to AER for a complete review and if approved, will notify the Town and adjacent land owners after receiving their direction from the Crown.

Town Manager Dion Pollard, said the Town was unaware of the well until the current gas leak and were as surprised as anyone else. He says although the Town is still gathering information on the problem, they are doing their “due diligence” to be prepared in the event of an emergency and also be ready for when the removal and correction process begins.

The Orphan Well Association gave the couple a gas monitor for their basement and the Association visits the home once per month to test the home for any signs of methane gas.

The Orphan Well Association says although they do not expect anything to happen, they have met with the Town of Vermilion Fire Chief and have confirmed that the Town is prepared for any emergencies that may arise when they begin their work on the well.

Pollard also said as soon as information on the procedures to fix the leaking well is available from the Orphan Well Association, the Town will be holding an open house for those with questions or who want more information.

Many of the staff went beyond the call of duty to ensure her physical and emotional well being everyday of her four month stay. A special thank-you to Dr. Maulud for her personal touch and the compassionate manner in which she dealt with our situation.

We would certainly be remiss if we failed to mention all of mom’s dear friends and neighbors who took the time to visit her. Your extra efforts and concern meant the world to her. Many thanks. She is now safely ensconced at the Lodge here in Vermilion, beginning a new chapter in her life.

Sheep Club Helps Clean Up The Environment

Members of the Vermilion 4H Sheep club held an electronic and tire recycling event at the Vermilion Transfer Station on April 19 where people in the area could take their old and outdated computers, monitors and keyboards as well as tires.

The 4H recently helped by taking all the outdated electronics from the Rotary club’s garage sale held this past weekend.

The club also helps with the disposal of

car, truck and tractor batteries, oil filters and used oil all in an effort to help clean up the environment and raise money for the club’s activities like its annual achievement day in July.

The club also has an active canine project in conjunction with the sheep club which will hold its achievement day on April 27 at the Agricultural grounds.

4H Clubs Challenge Other Youth Groups In Town-Wide Clean-up Vermilion 4H Submitted Area 4H clubs will be working together on May 10 to help with the Town of Vermilion Clean Up. We have committed to area 4 on the town map and are hoping the residents, school and businesses in this area will help us out by cleaning up their areas/neighbourhoods even if they can fit it in during a weeknight. The beef club also volunteers to clean up the two cemeteries each year and May 3 clubs are cleaning litter from the ditches of provincial highways in the annual “Highway Cleanup” day. Many of us will be in again in July to help the Ag Society to help clean and prep for the fair in July. The majority of our 4H

families live out of town, but we are happy to help out our community when we can.

We invite all 4H leaders, members and alumni to join our crew in helping with our area. Contact Leila, Deanna, Kim or Stacey.

As of today there are still nine areas of the town that are not adopted and we would like to extend a CHALLENGE to all other groups and residents in Vermilion to adopt an area and “Pitch In”. We have talked to the Mayor and challenged him and all town councillors and staff to join in the clean up and he made a commitment to do so. We are the only youth group to volunteer so far, and now 4H is CHALLENGING Minor Hockey, Vermilion Army Cadets, Girl Guides, Scouts, Dance Impressions by Ryan, Vermilion Dance

Association, Figure Skating Club, Vipers Swim Club, Gymnastics Club, Minor Ball, Nordic Ski Club, Soccer Association, Roar Lacrosse, Archer’s Club, The Edge, Curling Club, Bowling League, Kiddie Oasis and the Toy Lending Library, TaeKwonDo groups. If any of these groups mentioned commit to pitch in for Clean Up this week they can choose a group or person to challenge in the paper next week.

If you can not commit for that day you can still make a commitment to clean up an area during the week from May 4 to 9.

Lakeland Runaway and Walk on the Wildside is going high-tech this year.

Chip technology will be used during the May 10 event, making it possible for every runner and walker to receive an official time that’s accurate to 1/100ths of a second.

In previous years a small group of volunteers with stop watches and clip boards tried to record all the times.

When more than 300 people attended last year’s event, organizers decided to try chips this year to accurately record the times.

While the event is still a few weeks away, there are already more than 150

For the provision of TARGETED AND INDICATED PREVENTION services to youth and adults residing within the city of Lloydminster and County of Vermilion River The Prairie Central FASD Association is requesting proposals from qualified entities capable of, or willing to be trained in, the provision of Targeted and Indicated Prevention. The generosity of the people of Vermilion and area has shown through as another Rotary garage sale has proven to be a complete success.

Starting last Thursday, the doors of the Butler Building opened to reveal a wealth of treasures and all of the items found at the sale were donated by people wanting to get rid of their old, unwanted goods that are not landfill material. The items are still very useable, but their owners do not want or need them anymore.

Furniture, glassware, books, holiday decorations, toys and housewares were just some of the items that shoppers could find, and all in good condition.

Generous Hearts In Vermilion with better, new and improved products, what becomes of their old stuff? Some will find their way to the dump. This is unfortunate as some people cannot afford to purchase these items new and could make use of the garage sale purchases.

With many items not priced, shoppers who find their treasures are asked what they are willing to donate for the items.

Every donation made will go towards the betterment of the community, either directly of indirectly.

The garage sale items that are not sold through the sale will find their way to a number of organizations who will help find a home for the items. The Interval Store in Lloydminster will take the household items and through its store and abused women’s assistance program, will help find a home for them. Some of the women who use the facility leave their homes with nothing but their children and the clothes on their backs. Starting a new home can be costly

Letter to the Editor Organ Donation Saves Lives Hi, my name is Breanne Dallyn and my question to you is, “Have you ever considered becoming an organ donor?”

Up until about eight months ago it never crossed my mind, until our family was faced with an organ donation. My mom had a failing liver and was just put on the transplant list. She was given two choices: a deceased liver, which could take up to three years because of the lack of knowledge in organ donations or a live donation.

My sisters and I felt that since my mom had the option of a live donation, we pursued that option. I came in contact with the living organ donor program and started the process to see if I was a candidate – as did my other sisters. Because of the expense to the healthcare system and the risk in the types of tests, only one daughter was allowed to be tested at one time to find out if they were an adequate match.

My journey began with a consultation with the living donor co-ordinator, guidance counsellor, social worker and from there, many, many tests. The process took about two months. At the end of the process, I received a phone call saying that I was the perfect match. Perfect match meaning the size of the organ, blood type and body weight.

The best news one could receive was that I was able to become part of the donation process to save a life. My mother’s life.

REPLACE MY FURNACE FILTER?

That depends on your conditions. I always say don't fix it if it isn't broken. Normally I would say the filter should be changed every two to three months. The exception is if you are renovating or have pets and carpets etc. Sometimes the filter needs cleaning in less than a month if conditions are poor. In other situations the home is very clean and dust free and the filter lasts 6 months. The key is to check it monthly and replace or clean it as necessary. A dirty filter will shorten the life of your furnace and cost you money and possibly your health.

Spring is officially here folks and as I write this, it is pouring rain out there. I am not much of a rain person although rain is a gift from the heavens and brings new life and is the reason we are all here.

The rain makes me sleepy and even cranky at times, even though I understand and embrace its life giving benefits and I am also grateful it’s not in its solid fluffy white form. It is cleansing our gray and grimy world out there. All the dust, dirt and mold that has built up over the long six months of the past winter is being flushed to make room for new life and a green explosion.

As I mentioned spring isn’t official until I see, hear and sense some of Mother Nature’s wonders and creations. One is the Crocus, the first blooming prairie flower and green in spring.

In my last column I forgot to mention I saw her in full bloom absorbing the warm spring sunshine, on our trip to the cabin.

It was worth mentioning but the nasty remnants of a long winter blocked out that excitement.

It was mid-afternoon as we cruised the edge of a large field surrounded by prairie parkland wilderness and poplar trees, the trees so thick it blocked the sunlight on the field’s edge. A break in the trees opened up and the sunshine broke through to the field. I glanced into a small natural meadow nestled in the surrounding trees and I swear it appeared the sunshine was being illuminated from

the center of that tiny meadow.

The source was a bright flower that appeared to be white. She stood out like a sore thumb and I hit the brakes and walked in to admire her in all her glory.

As one got closer her white appearance turned into a pale blue or purple.

The center of her glowing a bright yellow, she was true sunshine amongst all the grey and grungy browns and she wasn’t alone, as there were several more woolly bulbs present.

However, she was the only one that bloomed to welcome us to new life of spring. It’s easy to know why she is known as the Easter Flower as she is the first new life that appears and can be seen close to Easter.

The prairie Crocus, in actuality is a lily that grows only in undisturbed natural prairie lands, she is tempting to pick but best left to thrive and welcome us to spring. I knelt and admired her for what seemed an eternity, I was lost in her beauty and strength amongst the remaining snow drifts, she had no idea what her being, really means to me personally.

Then Saturday of this past Easter long weekend, I opened the shop door and there stood momma robin all fluffed out looking plump and healthy. She stared at me as if to say “why is it so cold?” Friday and Saturday were cold, but she warmed my soul and spirits. She spent most of the day pecking at the lawn and hopping around making herself comfortable. I can’t wait to hear her sing.

I eagerly walked over to the pond and was saddened to see that large chunks of ice still covered the pond. It could be a while before I heard my frogs singing.

That evening I was working in the shop and had to fetch something from my truck. On the way there I stopped dead in my tracks, did I hear it or just imagine I heard it? Sure enough a single frog, more or less slowly croaked more than sang, but at least it was my final and one of the most anticipated signs that spring was really here.

winter was and understood his woe, when a second frog interrupted and tried to out talk the first. Soon they were both singing loudly and I had to run into the house to get the wife to come out and listen to them, as she also loves the song of the pond frog in spring.

Then as if as on cue Monday, still a day off and extension of the long weekend for me, the sun shone bright and the day grew from warm to almost too hot.

I can’t believe I even thought that. I was in top spirits, and spent the whole day outdoors as everything seemed to need immediate care, for garden and yard work. I basked in the sunlight and beautiful day outdoors. At one point I thought to myself “it’s getting way too hot to work out here.” I had to stop and giggle and said to myself “suck it up buttercup and enjoy;” ha ha.

Then that evening after a perfect day and elated that spring was here, I was in the shop sitting in my favourite chair, when I heard the most annoying sound! Yup, a mosquito buzzed my ear.

Without thinking I jumped up and with a fast “clap” I ended most likely the most undisputable sign of spring…not one that I look forward to, but know it’s a part of spring and am thankful it’s here.

I was in my mid teen years when I found a new horse in the barn one weekend morning. Here was a pretty and well made sorrel gelding with white stockings and a look of speed and go.

He wasn’t a colt, and had been trained and broke as they say. He even had a few saddle scars. He was a little edgy about being saddled and I guess he was feeling the effects of my being nervous too.

I soon found out he just loved to run and he was so light on the bit, it was a joy to be on him. Dad was happy when I told him he’d “done good”. I never did know how much he paid for him, but there never was a question, he was always considered as being my horse! So began a man, horse, relationship where “Old Pete” had me on a learning experience on a daily basis. He never did enjoy being saddled, and he even resisted going in the barn.

He seemed to like me, and always did his best to please and I spent many, many happy hours riding through some of God’s most beautiful country while on his back.

He always insisted on a full out gallop the minute you’d swing on board, and you had better get ready. After a half a mile or so he’d had his run and would lope along smooth as a high priced car.

He was so competitive he simply couldn’t bear to have anyone ahead of him at ANY time. He’d level out and really put on all speed to stay ahead. Another of his favorite quirks was to prance and paw while waiting for someone to open a

gate he just couldn’t abide to stand still, even for a minute. When I came to a gate on my own, I had to swing off just as he was stopping, otherwise he’d already be circling and pawing the ground. He was, I guess high strung.

I used to ride him over to Uncle Fred’s to do his chores and feed his outside cattle, and I’d cut, kitty corner across the home quarter as a short cut. One day going home at noon, I noticed Dad moving Uncle Herman’s cattle a half mile south and decided I’d just head south to the corner. When I came to the cut off corner, instead of going straight like I planned, “Old Pete” suddenly made a turn unexpectedly and I hit the ditch in four feet of snow. By the time I had dug myself out of the snow I looked across the way and saw Pete standing by the barn door, bless his ornery hide.

In the years that followed my horse seemed harder and harder to catch and saddle and no amount of coaxing or even his favorite oats wouldn’t lower his resolve. Once you had him saddled and on the way, he was a pleasure to ride and had no quirky thing like shying or refusing to cross a fence or bridge, he just came

we like and, in many cases, prefer not to expound on the reasons why. Standing before Van Gogh’s “Irises”, one observer may respond with a swell of unexplainable emotion while another may shrug, mumbling, as he walks away, his disbelief that such banality could possibly be admired by anyone.

Th e re is g reat a r t a n d th ere is mediocre art; there are the acknowledged masters whose work is admired by legions and there are the anonymous street rascals who art up other peoples’ property by Bic light after midnight. Art may invoke reflection and inspiration or it may evoke shock and repulsion. Its effect on those who view it may be found anywhere along a continuum of limitless responses.

Art, through the filter of its creator’s interpretation, records our history and reflects aspects of our beliefs and our culture. It may be personal or worldly.

Art, it seems, is ubiquitous. It peeks out at us even from places we least expect to find it, oblivious to our awareness of its presence.

I believe that art is accessible to

anyone. I think of the process of creating ar t as an accessible---and a worthy---pursuit. If we can suspend the idea that in order to create art you must first be a competent artist, we may find that a few hours spent in front of an easel applying paint to a blank canvas can be deeply satisfying, inspirational, and even therapeutic. Art, like music, is not reserved for a select few who have learned to speak its language. We need only to listen and to become willing to participate in order to receive a share of its many benefits.

If I somehow become lost and can no longer speak or adequately navigate my way in this world, I hope someone will think to leave me a shelf of books full of story, an easel and canvas with paints in all the colours of the rainbow.

I hope that someone will think to leave me music to hear. And instruments to explore, whether or not they think I might possess the skill to adequately play them.

Inspiration for creating ar t is, I think, as unique as each person who attempts to create it. It’s within each one of us, even if we’ve never tried or been encouraged to try. What dormant talents may emerge if extended the invitation to come out into the light?

What fulfilment might await us in transforming a stark white page or canvas into a scene replete with bold, bright colour resulting from the strokes of brushes wielded by our own unsteady hand? What surprise. These possibilities we cannot know until we try.

Kefir Kefir is a fermented milk drink similar to yogurt, but it is much more power ful in delivering good bacteria to our digestive system.

Kefir contains 10-40 times more beneficial probiotics than yogurt and a broader spectrum. Can you imagine drinking 40 billion probiotics?

Now that’s a lot of goodness. Yogurt provides transient beneficial bacteria, but kefir provides so many more, that they have the ability to colonize for lasting, rather than temporary benefits. That means that the good guys are moving in to stay.

Kef i r a ls o co nta i n s m a ny m o re different strains of helpful bacteria and yeasts than yogurt. The National Kefir Association claims that kefir cleanses the intestines while increasing immune response, improving digestion and aiding in weight loss.

Finally, kefir can be purchased readymade in the yogurt sections of some stores. Yay! It can also be easily made using milk, and a Kefir starter package purchased at a health food store.

I got one for $6.95, and it contains six starter packets.

All I had to do was warm some milk in a pot on the stove, stir in the starter and then allow the mixture to sit on the counter for 24 hours. I used a plastic Tupperware juice container, with the lid on loosely, as the fermentation

produces a gas pressure. The fermentation process is then stopped by storing the newly made kefir in the refrigerator. The homemade kefir is even more potent that the store bought, and it is best to start with only a quarter of a cup twice a day. The amount can be slowly increased as your digestive system adapts. Note that because the fermentation process uses the natural milk sugar, don’t buy lactose free milk for making kefir. When the kefir is done fermenting there will be very little lactose left in the regular milk.

What got me interested in kefir was a recent study claiming that it can reduce belly fat. I had to try it. I drank some kefir, twice a day every day. So the results of my experiment: using store bought kefir the first week resulted in a loss of one and a half inches on my waist. Impressive! The next week I used homemade kefir and lost another half of an inch. I did not lose pounds or inches anywhere else. The initial loss of two inches off my waist has stayed off.

If you don’t like the slightly tart taste of kefir, you could try adding it to a fruit smoothie. I also discovered that I could easily make sourdough bread using no other leavening than kefir. I am allergic to regular baker’s yeast and I haven’t been able to eat bread for well over 15 years. I have found that the sourdough bread leavened with kefir does not provoke an allergic reaction for me.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to have a piece of toast now. That recipe, for kefir sour dough bread will follow next week.

Vermilion Lions Recycle For Sight Submitted

As spring cleaning gets under way, the Vermilion Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program.

Candice Trabre (Left), Manager of Lakeland Funeral Home and member of the Good Life Institute, was dropping

of some glasses and stated, “This is a very worth while cause to support.”

The Vermilion Lions Club is collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. Then at the mission site, trained Lion volunteers and eye care professionals perform vision screen-

ings and dispense the appropriate recycled glasses, free of charge, to needy children and adults.

Area News Marwayne Family Recycles More Than Just Tires Karen Nedzielski Reporter

A Mar wayne rancher has foun d profit in recycling tires and has taken his interes t in re-usin g unus ab le items to a whole different level.

Nestled in the hills just north of Marwayne, Alberta, is the ranch-style home of Allan and Chris Brown and family. The couple raised a family of three girls, all of whom still live in the Marwayne area and participate in the daily operations of the ranch.

After leaving Prince Alber t, Saskatchewan, with $500 borrowed from his father, Allan and Chris Brown headed west to seek out a fortune in the rich soils of Alberta. Promised a job in a feedlot, Brown says he quickly found out he wanted to be in business for himself, and it wasn’t long before the Browns were on their feet as entrepreneurs.

With the oil sands of Alberta fighting to preserve the environment and find a use for the worn tires from mining trucks, Allan began taking in the tires and turning them into useful items such as cattle and horse feed troughs, stock and storage water tanks as well as mineral tubs.

In order to cut the large tires, Allan and his partners devised machines to help with the transformation of the refuse, manufacturing a cutting m a ch i n e m a d e co m p l ete l y o u t of second hand parts.

This business has now grown to

employ num erous employe es an d offers a learning experience in recycling to those who come to the family ranch.

Allan and Chris have found other ways to keep themselves busy including sawing lumber for the cabins he builds at the ranch. During slow times, Allan and his employees keep busy sawing lumber that is brought to him from oil and gas well lease sites; trees that would otherwise be piled to rot or burnt. Allan takes the logs and runs them through the mill producing lumber and slabs as well as lumber for the cabins, two of which sit alongside the ranch’s freshwater creek, that the family rents out to visitors wanting to briefly escape from their urban lifestyles.

Allan says the family has a number of regular visitors who frequent the cabins to enjoy the slower pace lifestyle. Cabin dwellers walk the trails on foot or borrowed horses, all the while enjoying the peaceful serenity of nature.

The horses the Browns loan out are yet another form of the family’s “recycling” program.

Some of the horses that end up with the Browns, mainly come to them by means of auctions, horses that may otherwise be bound for the slaughter house. With horse numbers on the rise and the work for horses dwindling, many horses are consigned to

T h e B row n s s o m eti m e s t a ke i n horses with health issues or soundness concerns. His daughter Becky, an equine massage therapist, works with them until they are once again healthy and then their training begins again.

When asked why he takes in the wild, unruly or problem horses, he simply replied, “Because it’s fun.”

Allan says with modernization, the future of horses is not good. Many people have turned to the use of allterrain vehicles for recreation instead of horses.

The Browns attend auctions looking for equipment to use at the ranch and as Allan visits with potential customers of the ranch, Chris makes careful purchases for the farm-based operation.

A m a n of m o d e s t wo rd s , A l l a n does not elaborate much on the fact that he has been asked to speak at a number of conferences in Canada and the United States about his tire recycling operation and the importance of using these discarded items to make something of value once again, to be used for years to come.

The Browns have been offering the recycled tire products for more than 20 years and they say they have operated solely off of the money earned from the farming operation and have never accepted any form of government assistance for the recycling.

Control for Richardson Ground Squirrels: the registration for 2% Liquid Strychnine Concentrate has been renewed and the ASB will distribute it to qualified farmers in the County. Strychnine cost is $7 per bottle or $168 for a case of 24 and will be available at the County Office on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am-4:30 pm.

PROTECTIVE SERVICES NEWS:

The Protective Services Department strongly advises that all burning that may have taken place during the winter months (example: burning pits, brush piles, straw bales etc.), is thoroughly inspected to ensure that it is completely extinguished. With the limited spring melt, it is anticipated that we will be heading into an extreme dry spring and early summer.

Members of the Vermilion Rotary Club had a last minute organizational meeting before the doors opened at the annual fundraiser garage sale.

The members welcomed the crowd of people as the garage sale kicked off the first day of the sale on Thursday, April 24 at the Butler Building on the Vermilion fairgrounds.

There were rows of tables filled with items all donated to the Rotary to sell with some of the proceeds going towards the Lakeland Rowing club’s boat house construction.

Local Artist Hones Craft With Scrap Metals Karen Nedzielski Reporter

A Vermilion artist has found treasures in other people’s discarded metal. While most farmers and metal shops are throwing away their smaller, short pieces of metal, Tammy Richardson says she uses the discarded pieces to make one of a kind works of art for friends and art customers.

Although Richardson said she has previously attended art and craft shows, she now sells her pieces mainly by word of mouth.

She said she has always had an interest in welding and loving handmade crafts, metal art was always one of those crafts that amazed her. She recalls watching her dad weld at his shop and always wondered what he was doing.

In 2008 Richardson took her metal art interest to another level, purchasing a welder and plasma cutter to work in her own shop at her home. She signed up to take an evening welding class at Lakeland College to figure out the equipment and, after what she says were some pretty interesting looking pieces and a few burns and cuts, she practiced and studied like

“There’s no end to learning when it comes to working with metals which keeps my love for it alive,” Richardson said.

Richardson incorporates new and used metal, including old cultivator shovels, pieces of pipe, gas stove grates, and even metal coat hangers in her artwork. She has found some of the pieces she has at landfills and scrap yards.

Richardson enjoys working on her art

mainly as a hobby with her home acting as a gallery for her work, but also builds on-demand a few pieces for customers and friends, which includes the Village of Innisfree Christmas street light decorations.

Although welding is not typically seen as an occupation for women or a form of art, Richardson is changing the mindset of many, with her unique hobby and artwork.

Second Annual Children’s and Youth Mental Health Art Contest Lorna Hamilton Reporter

The second Annual Children’s and Youth Mental Health Art contest received 174 entries from schools in Vermilion, Mannville, Clandonald and Kitscoty which were displayed at J.R. Robson School the past few weeks with the art pieces being separated into age groups from Grade one-three, four-six, seven–nine and 10–12.

The children could chose to do either a piece of artwork pertaining to mental wealth which is positive ways to feel mentally healthy, or mental health which

deals with all forms of mental health from depression to suicide.

The first 174 pieces were voted upon by the schools, then the community voted which has brought each category down to five pieces each.

The Mental Health Art Gala which is free to attend will be held on day of week May 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Center, where all 174 pieces of art will be displayed.

During the gala there will be numerous activities including button making, hope boxes, balloon animals and face painting.

“April Showers Bring May Flowers” but April also brings to Vermilion many festivals; dance and music. Our “Happy Harmonizers”, the Seniors’ Choir, was happy to receive a first place at the Music Festival held on April 1. They are practising for their next performances to be held on May 2 in Mannville, and on May 7 in Vermilion when the choirs from Mannville, Wainwright, and Lloydminster will attend for their semi-annual choir celebration. The hand bells are a special treat. This event will be held at the Seniors’ Centre at 7:30 p.m. A donation to the Food Bank or silver collection will get you in the door.

On April 7, cake and ice cream was

served to the individuals who had a birthday or anniversary in April. Every birthday or anniversary is a special one!

All seniors with birthdays and anniversaries in the current month are invited to attend. Doreen McIntyre has volunteered to ensure that the cakes are baked.

At the Executive Meeting held on April 8, discussions took place on a variety of items, some being the old office equipment to be donated to the 4H Sheep Club for their fundraiser, new job descriptions are being worked on as well as plans to review and update the bylaws. A thank you letter was received from the Allied Arts with a donation of seasons tickets to their theatre.

On June 2 after the morning birthday cake celebration, Mike Mckinley will do a short presentation on “Senior Safety”.

On June 3, Seniors’ Day, this year’s celebration will take place at the new Town Hall Park where beef-on-a bun will cost a “toonie”. There will be entertainment and other activities as well. The Seniors have a small shuffleboard in excellent condition for sale, perfect for a mancave!

The card players had a choice of two tournaments, the Crib Doubles held on April 10 and the Alberta 55+ Whist held on April 11. Marj Osinchuk was pleased to have 17 tables attend her last official tournament. Marj was Zone 7, Area 7 Director, of Alberta 55+ and was previously Past-President. She is looking forward to attending functions without any responsibilities. The whist players all enjoyed the great meal that was prepared by volunteers. Thank you, ladies.

The first Fish Dinner was held at the Seniors’ Centre on Good Friday, April 18. Advance tickets were sold, the goal was 50 tickets but 72 tickets were sold.

Because it was a new venture, there was some uncertainty about the success of same. Once the home-made pies were nicely cut, the baby potatoes washed, the broccoli cut , coleslaw mixed, carrots sliced and fish ready for the oven, it

seemed that everything would be okay.

The tables with their tablecloths, nicely opened daffodils and napkins were inviting. Once everyone ate, it was time to sell a basket of Easter eggs. The winner of the draw was Roger Erickson. The four door prizes donated by local businesses were won by Jean Morrison, Doreen McIntyre, Howard Row and Herb Friedenstab. Thank you to Long’s Value Drug Store, Lakeland Florists, Xtatik Hair Salon, and Extraordinary Extras. Thank you to Harps for the grocery donation.

All donations from members of pies and other food items were appreciated and helped to ensure the success of the dinner. Help for clean-up was great!

They say don’t judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes, same advice goes for judging volunteer organizations. One’s opinion could soften after actually having the experience of organizing an event with all its various diversions, and being successful.

I suspect that most seniors have already learnt this along life’s path.

Twenty-five of the local floor curlers had a bit of a wind-up complete with lunch on April 23. Wainwright is hosting the big wind-up next week.

Girl Guides Help At Knights Of Columbus Pancake Breakfast Lorna Hamilton

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 27, The Knights of Columbus held its monthly pancake breakfast which runs from September to April at St. Jerome’s school. The proceeds from each monthly pancake breakfast are donated to different organizations and this month the proceeds will be donated to The First Vermilion Girl Guides.

A number of Knights of Columbus members were busily preparing pancakes, sausages and hash browns for the half buffet style breakfast, while, two young ladies Victoria Newberry and Grace Fluney from the First Vermilion
