Keeping The Cowboy Way Alive

The Lakeland College riding arena was busy this past weekend with working cowboys and cowgirls as the annual Working Cowboy Competition and Horse Sale took place on Friday and Saturday. Working ranch cowboys and cowgirls competed in a number of ranch related events including ranch roping, stockdog/horse trials, and extreme ranch horse competition and the very popular bronc riding event. The event’s High Point over-all winner was Southern Alberta’s Clint Swales (Top photo) on his horse Latigo, who was crowned Canada’s Greatest Working Cowboy. Winning the Friday night Extreme Ranch Horse competition was Geoff Hoar and his horse San Storm Chex. There was no shortage of competitors and spectators were entertained with the old ways of the west. Saturday featured a performance horse preview where prospective buyers could inspect the 23 horses up for sale which got underway at 2 p.m. Photo Karen Nedzielski.

TOWN CLEAN-UP & COMMUNITY BARBEQUE SATURDAY MAY 10, 2014

Brrr, it was a long, cold winter! But, warmer weather is here and the snow is gone.What is left behind, however, is a lot of accumulated garbage. Let’s pick it up and celebrate our spring cleaning efforts together on Saturday, May 10. Here’s the plan:

1. Get together with your neighbors, friends, sports teams, or community groups and decide which area of town you want to make beautiful again.

2. Call Jeanette at 780-581-2402 before Friday, May 2nd to register your group and chosen area.

3. Stop at the Town Office at 5021 – 49 Ave during the work week of May 5-9 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm to pick up your garbage bags and safety vests package.

4. On Saturday, May 10th, sweep your registered area clean of garbage.

Put the bags in area dumpsters or bring to the Town Hall parking lot dumpsters.

5. Enjoy free burgers and drinks with your fellow spring cleaners from Noon – 2pm at Town Hall Park (west of the Town Office).

6. Feel pride.

Local News

Local Organizations Claiming Areas In Town Clean-Up Karen Nedzielski Reporter The Town of Vermilion’s Community Clean-Up and Barbeque initiative has had a number of interested parties but there are still numerous areas of the town that have yet to be claimed. Six of the 14 areas have already been claimed leaving a fair chunk of the Town up for grabs.

The Town Clean-Up and Community Barbeque is scheduled to take place on May 10 and will feature free burgers and drinks for those who participate. Those helping with the clean up can receive bags from the Town before the event and are encouraged to sweep their chosen areas

and place the collected trash in the area garbage bins to bring them to the Town Hall parking lot dumpsters.

Areas on the map already spoken for are area four taken by 4H, area six taken by the Vermilion Folk Club and Vermilion Quilters Guild, area seven claimed by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural board and the area residents, area ten will see the EST students team up with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural board members, Prairie Place and Shawn Jacula claimed area 12 and the Vermilion Gun Club will take care of the Tourist Booth area.

Anyone wanting to participate can do so by calling the Town office to learn more on how they can get involved. See map below for identifying clean-up area.

Discount Days At Webb’s Machinery

Webb’s Machinery, in Vermilion, held their Discount Days this past week with many specials and prizes, coffee and snacks. Customer Phillip Tod, tried his luck spinning the discount wheel with parts person Stephen Simmons, and received a 30 per cent discount from his purchase. Lakeland College Animal Science Technology Final Presentation Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Members of the second-year Lakeland College Animal Science Technology students held their final presentation on April 11 to display what they have learned over the past two years.

Among the presentations was the dairy class who showed how the group of students worked to increase the milk production in the College’s dairy cows.

Breeding qualities, feed management, milking qualities, health issues, reproduction and sire selection were part of the student’s presentation to the audience of students, family members and College adminitration.

The Commercial Beef team took their

turn in presenting their findings from the past two years and reported some tough times similar to those experienced by local area farmers. The cost of replacement breeding animals had definitely affected the profit/loss margin on this year’s class.

A total of 85 calves were born at the college and students studied a number of labs including birth weights, fertility cycles, marketing steers and purchasing replacement heifers.

The commercial beef class showed a negative income for this year, attributing the loss to the reduction of inventory as a result of breeding stock not being replaced in previous years.

The second year students celebrated the completion of the class by hosting a social with snacks and beverages.

Lorna Hamilton, originally from Marystown, Newfoundland, left her hometown and moved to Alberta in July of 2006 seeking employment. Lorna made the move along with her mother and Lorna’s two children, a daughter who attends J.R Robson and her son who works at Webb’s Ford. Lorna has previously worked in the home care field but has also previously owned her own hair salon back home in Newfoundland. She is one of four siblings, the other three live throughout eastern Canada. Lorna is an art enthusiast who likes to paint and draw but says enjoying time with her two dogs is a big part of her life. She can be seen walking her two furry friends Ivy and Kaylee, throughout the Vermilion Provincial Park.

Lorna says her family and pets are most important to her and The Vermilion and area Voice is happy to have Lorna join the team. Garden Season Just Around The Corner Karen Nedzielski Reporter

With the spring weather now officially on its way, many garden enthusiasts are turning their thoughts to digging up the dirt in the flowerbeds and garden in preparation for the coming planting season.

There are many things to keep in mind when getting ready to transplant bedding plants or seeding the garden and Vivian Cooke from Castle Garden Greenhouse and Antiques south of Kitscoty, has a few simple tips to help make the spring growing season a success.

Cultivating the beds are very important

to help battle the quack grass outbreak that may be troublesome further in the summer. It is essential that the plants do not have to battle weeds for space and moisture so you may need an herbicide to assist in keeping back the weeds.

Depending on your soil, Cooke says you may need to apply a peat moss, compost or potting mix to help lighten heavy, clay soils.

When transplanting bedding plants Cooke also says a good fertilizer can help stimulate the roots and recommends a 10-52-10 fertilizer ration to help plant roots take hold.

She adds that overwatering some plants

can sometimes do more harm than good.

Pansies and marigolds need a significant amount of water when transplanting but need time to re-root, and one should hold off about a week to let that happen.

Also ensure that eavestrough downspouts are draining away from flower beds and potted plants to prevent drowning or over watering.

With bulbs for lilies or Irises plants, Cooke recommends that every few years you inspect your flower beds to make sure the bulbs are not overcrowding each other.

If needed, plant bulbs can be dug up and spaced out to help with proper growth.

Cooke says extra bulbs can make a great

gift for friends and family.

Keeping an eye out for any abnormalities in your garden is key to making sure your growing season is a success and Castle Garden Greenhouse and Antiques has a number of tips and tricks to help the most inexperienced gardener.

Castle Garden Greenhouse and Antiques can be found by traveling south of Kitscoty on Highway 897 to Township Road 494 and then follow the signs. The greenhouse has been preparing and planting since early March for their greenhouse season opening scheduled for May 1.

Ending Of One Season Brings The Start Of Another Karen Nedzielski Editor

The end of one season means the beginning of another. Much like the Easter celeb rations marking the rebir th of a monumental biblical event, so to are many events as the start of another season begins.

Over the past few week s, many organizations are marking the end of their seasons with a number of events such as dance and music festivals, end of the season bonspiels, concerts

and competitions.

Schools in the area are preparing for the final push of the year, readying students for final exams. This past week Lakeland College students h a ve h o s te d t h e co m m u n i t y a n d College delegates as they presented their findings from the past year. One by one the class members, dressed to impress, gave their insight about why their projects succeeded or did not.

Many of the class presentations were agricultural related and faced som e of the s am e issu es farm ers face on a daily basis. Students gave reasons why the groups had profits or losses, and took questions from the

crowd in a very professional manner.

For instructors watching, it must have been a very proud moment as the students had the answers to all of the questions.

The dancers and musicians who par ticipated in the local festivals put their best foot forward as they each took they turn for constructive criticism from adjudicators as they displayed their work from the past year.

Excited performers dressed in their formal and costume wear and gave their best effort to impress family members, friends, instructors and of course adjudicators.

But with the end of all these activities brings the start of others. Just like the seasonal change, so too are

the seasonal activities.

Skiing and snowboarding gives way to hiking and biking. Treadmills are exchanged for sidewalks and parks.

Winter parkas and snow pants are traded in for light sweaters and jackets.

Soccer fields and baseball diamonds will be the center of attraction for the next few months as winter finally gives way to spring and summer.

There never seems to be a shortage of things to do in the area and even though some activities are ending, new ones are beginning so get out there and enjoy everything related to spring. After all, before we know it, it will be over and it will be back to the winter activities.

Old Photo Identified

An old photograph that appeared in the Voice’s March 31 issue has been identified as the old Minneapolis Moline dealership in Mannville, owned by James McCauley. The building stood for many years but later suffered a fire. The building was salvaged and repaired and was then used as a machine shop. Part of the building was moved to the family’s farm just west of Mannville where it still stands today. The building to the left of it has also been identified as the office of the Mannville Mirror newspaper. Further to the left is a house that belonged to the Swain family, which we are informed, still stands in Mannville today, just north of the Mannville Elks Hall. Thank you to a number of people who stopped

by The Voice to help identify the photo. If you have an old photos of interest please don’t hesitate to bring them into our office for future publication.

UFA awards $50,000 to Marwayne Fire & Rescue

CALGARY — On April 1, 2014 UFA hosted a celebration in Hand Hills, and the community chose Marwayne Fire & Rescue as the fifth and final $50,000 winner in UFA’s Rural from the Roots Up - Get ‘n’ Give Contest.

“We chose Marwayne for the overwhelming need and essential service they provide to their community. Their video was creative, a group effort of many dedicated volunteers passionate about saving lives,” said Rosemary Rosin, Hand Hills Lake Community Club.

Municipal funding combined with community fundraising efforts and UFA’s prize money will allow Marwayne Fire & Rescue to purchase a new rescue vehicle to support their fire, rescue and first response services. Photo submitted.

Q: ALL OF A SUDDEN MY FURNACE SHUT DOWN. I SEE IT LIGHT AND THEN SHUT OFF RIGHT AWAY LIKE IT IS NOT GETTING FUEL. WHAT CAN IT BE?

A:

This problem sounds like a flame sensor. Most modern furnaces have several safety sensors and switches. What you describe sounds like a flame sensor. Here is how it works. When the burner starts up the gas valve has a timer that was a few seconds for a circuit to close from a small bimetal rod that is in the flame. If the furnace does not light the flame sensor doesn't heat up and the loop is not closed. In this state the gas valve shuts down so the house doesn't fill with gas. The problem is that you can see flame so the flame sensor is sending the wrong message to the as valve. Often the flame sensor can be cleaned and it will work fine again. If you recently created a lot of dust such as dry walling your basement that will usually create this problem.

Impurities in the fuel also cause the flame sensor to get dirty and fail.

With that warm spell making the white stuff disappear on our outdoor archery range I managed to shoot a few arrows outdoors; soon our archery club will be shooting outdoors every day.

Speaking of our archery club, I am going to discuss something on a little more serious note with the club this evening. This has to do with a little 2 year old baby girl Cheyenne, and she is local in Irma.

This last October Cheyenne was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer, known as Neuroblas.toma despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy, she is now Stage 4, and treatments have failed.

She is now left with the options of palliative care or being at home with her parents and seeking alternative treatments.

Cheyenne and her family moved from Nova Scotia to Irma, Alberta last year to try and make ends meet, they didn’t want to leave the Maritimes, but as new parents and newly married, they had to try and make a better life for themselves and their brand new baby girl.

They tried for many, many years to have a baby and Cheyenne was the answer to so many prayers. She’s a really energetic, happy little girl. She’s so full of life! Despite being sick, she brightens any room instantly!

Global News in Edmonton broadcast a clip of her recently seeking assistance in raising funds to send Cheyenne to a facility in California that has a good success rate in treating her form of cancer.

However, it’s going to cost almost

$30,000 for treatment.. money her parents simply don’t have, Mandy and Robbie Zwicker, her parents, have taken time off work to spend every single moment with Cheyenne through this journey.

The entire local community is trying to raise enough money for this family to try all options.

We have raised full funds to sponsor several children to take part in an outdoors summer camp. Some of us also donated time to organize and instruct an archery program at the summer camp which was very well appreciated by the youngsters and our rewards were left unsaid.

Many local businesses and thoughtful people are donating items to an auction called “Cheyenne’s Auction” as we speak on Facebook with a lot of valuable an d interestin g items and events. If you can, go to Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ groups/684610448243177 and have a look around, there may be something there that interests you, or simply to donate to such a worthwhile cause that tugs on the heart.

I already know that certain individuals in our club are donating already as individuals however, as a club I am hoping we can come up with a valuable item for the auction.

They used their wits and strength and primitive equipment to tame this country and change its ways of buffalo and wild animals to cattle, grain and the like. There are a few of us still left that have broken wild prairie and bush and made it into cultivated land. Just think that prairie had existed from the beginning of time and remained the same since the ice age we read about. I guess we can thank that same age for bringing us all these rocks we had to contend with.

Bring back memories of those days of hand loading and the unloading the same on a pile somewhere along a fence line?

By the time I came along we had powerful crawler tractors with big dozer blades to pile the trees and pull breaker plows or heavy discs to break up the sod and cut through the roots and stumps. Imagine breaking the prairie with a walking plow and a team of horses. How about pulling the stumps and moving large rocks with man and horse power. You can’t help

but wonder how it was ever achieved, o n a s c a l e b i g e n o u g h to ma ke a living off the land. As a boy I helped my uncle Herman break land with a 25-45 Rumely oil pull tractor pulling a four breaker plow turning down silver willows that were eight or ten feet high. Often brother and I steered the tractor while Uncle nursed the old engine along. It was a struggle as I remember. Breaking 50 acres in those days was a big deal. Anyone who ever had to service and drive one of those old iron monsters really earned the money, they made from breaking land.

I remember SO well the struggle.

When I b ou ght my Uncle Fred ’s land, there were several quarters that were only about half cultivated. Uncle assured me they were impossible to break as they were much too rocky to bother with. A neighbour had acquired a TD18 International crawler tractor with a bull dozer blade to push down and pile the trees that covered about half the quarter. I told Fred Nelson to start on the north side of the quarter and do about a thousand dollars worth of clearing. In those days a cat tractor and dozen cost about twelve dollars an hour. I thought that was mega dollars then. Anyway he did about a 40 acre piece on the north side of the quarter.

Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright and on behalf of the Government of Canada, was pleased to present Ms. Juliefe Presas with a certificate of recognition this morning at the Nothin Fancy Restaurant in Ryley. Ms. Presas was recognized for her actions upon the outbreak of a fire at the Ryley Hotel on January 19th.

The fire completely destroyed the century-old building. Luckily, no one was injured.

Benoit issued the following statement to Ms. Presas this morning: “As the Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, I take pride in recognizing your commendable act

of bravery on the morning of January 19th. You acted alone to alert the patrons of Ryley Hotel to a fire and guided them to safety. If not for your actions, I fear that there would have been a far more tragic outcome.

“Your actions are a reminder that there are exceptional citizens among us who put their lives at risk and show great courage in dangerous situations. The mark you have left on the lives of all those affected by the fire will last a lifetime. You have every right to take pride in your heroism.

“I join the Village of Ryley, Alberta n s a n d i n d e e d a ll of C a na d a i n extending our thanks for your courageous effor ts. On behalf of Prime M i nis te r Ste p h e n H a r p e r a n d th e Government of Canada, I am pleased to present you with a certificate of recognition.”

that I tried to burn, but not knowing the trick then, I managed to burn all the small stuff and it left the big log behind. What a god-awful mess that was! The next foul up came when the outfit I hired to break the land with a heavy disc didn’t pile the unburned logs and simply drove over them with the outfit, and the float they dragged behind scattered the logs all over the field. It was an incredible mess. To top it all off the disc was about worn out and the discs just made marks in the sod and never really penetrated the soil. I remember seeing the job and thinking this is terrible, surely this can’t be the way it should be! I was tempted to not pay for the mess, but was assured by the contactor it was a creditable effort. Little did I know!

I had one incredible amount of frustration coming my way before I got the first crop seeded. Then I used an old heavy one way tiller with a seed box that hadn’t turned a wheel for perhaps ten years and managed to put seed in the ground between all the stones.

That first crop was kind of light but the straw when I burned it took care of a lot of the roots. When I put my

heavy duty cultivator in the ground it rolled stones out like plowing potatoes out of a potato patch. You could walk across the field and step on a stone with every step. I rented a fancy reel type rock picker and picked a mountain of stones. That was just the start.

I bought dynamite and learned how to blow the bigger stones out of the ground so I could pull them off. In the course of five years, a few acres at a time, I managed to eventually clear and break the whole quarter. To see it now you see a hilly piece of land, that is very fertile and grows good crop, but you’d be hard pressed to even imagine the hours of hard toil I invested in that piece of land that at one time only yielded a small amount of prairie wool hay. It was a wonderful feeling to seed the whole quarter to wheat one year and had something in excess of 7000 bushel of wheat in that one good crop. I wish my Uncle Fred had been alive yet to see it. You got to really know a piece of ground when you worked on it so hard for so long.

That’s how this country was tamed.

Anticipate the near future. Visualize the splendour of luxurious green grass. Imagine your surroundings as a kid’s new colouring book, soon to be transformed from a dullard’s monochrome landscape into a full colour spectrum spilling from a new twentyfour pack crayon box.

O h, wait. We cannot forget the tra nsitio na l p e rio d. Fo r a ll th ose endlessly harsh winter months everything on the ground remains undercover of snow. Even the grubbiest of backstreets appears orderly.

Spring melt is like holding one of those magnifying mirrors up close to your face in a room with fluorescent lighting: ever y imperfection stops your breath. Spring is welcome and pretty, but also a little garish.

What can I do, you may ask yourself, as you stomp down the sidewalk with Penny the Poodle dragging you along trash-ridden streets by one aching arm.

Earth Day, the mild breeze seems to whisper. One day each year has been designated specifically to encourage all of us to pause and ponder the state of our environment. Unless you go walking while blind-folded, you know about the soggy debris strewn along streets and fields all around us.

W i th th e p u b l i c a ti o n of Ra c h e l Carson’s book, “Silent Spring”, in 1962, there began a slow awakening and acknowledgement of our collective responsibility for the maintenance of a clean environment, the preservation of viable habitat for all living things, and the promotion / protection of public health.

Fo l l o w i n g t h e p r o t e s t- h e a v y days of the 1960s, a small group of concerned citizens recognized that it could not rely solely on government to ensure the continued integrity of the environment. They would have to first inform themselves with

reliable information, and then to act.

Earth Day was first initiated in the United States in 1970. Since then, the momentum has been slow but steady. And unstoppable. In Canada, the first official movement began in 1990 with the establishment of Earth Day Canada (EDC) as a national environmental charity. Today, EDC pulses with a strong hear tbeat, suppor ting national environmental awareness and educational programs. EDC promotes responsible living through initiatives like Ecokids, the H ome Energy Audit, Reduce-Reuse-Recycling, Anti-Idling, Hometown Heroes, a n d Ta p e s t r y p r o g r a m s , a m o n g others.

In an ideal world, everyone would become engaged in seeking out credible information about the current state of our environment. We would make an effort to contribute to the

Students Leave For Europe for Canadian Beaches and Battlefields from WWI and WWII Tour On April 4, JR Robson students were visited by Jay, the owner of H a p py H a r b o r C o m i c s a n d a r ti s t Tracey who took students through the process of creating a comic book from idea to the final product. As Jay spoke of the various jobs involved in writing and drawing comics, Tracy spend his time drawing a character based on suggestions from students. Jay has extensive knowledge of the comic book industry and had great suggestions for students on how to encourage the creative process whether in art or writing. Hopefully the sessions provided students with the inspiration to continue creating stories and wonderful art.

Easter Eggs Decorating eggs is a fun and creative Easter

tradition.

Begin by hard boiling the eggs. Place the eggs in a pot with 1 / 2 teaspoon of baking soda and enough cold water to cover the top of the eggs. Bring to a full boil, cover the pot and remove it from the heat and let it stand for 15-17 minutes. Drain the water and cool the eggs quickly in cold water. If you boil the eggs the whole time, the eggs will have a more rubbery texture.

Very fresh eggs do not peel well, so it is better to use eggs that are a little older for easier peeling. The baking soda in the water also helps the eggs to peel easier.

To colour the eggs I make up a dye bath in recycled 500ml plastic containers from yogurt, sour cream or cottage cheese. In each container I add several drops or a squirt of food colouring, 1 1 / 4 cups hot water and 1 tablespoon vinegar. Use tablespoons or teaspoons to lower the eggs in and out of the container.

Here are some different techniques you can use to get creative with your eggs: for darker colours, leave the eggs in longer, or add more food colouring.

For interesting colours you can dye the eggs in two different colours such as red and blue, to end up with a purple egg. You can dye one end of the egg one colour and the other end a different colour simply by holding the egg part way in the dye with your hand.

You can wrap the egg with rubber bands and then dye the egg and remove the bands to reveal the lines.

You can use wax crayons to write or draw on the eggs. If you use a white crayon, where you draw, will remain white after the egg is dyed. You can

use the crayon to draw stripes, zigzag, of Kool-Aid with 2 / 3 to 3 / 4 of a cup need to add the vinegar. This method polka dots, flowers, write words or hot water. STEPS Dance Festival was a positive experience for dancers to showcase their hard work and developing technique. It is a time for dancers from surrounding areas to get together to share this year’s routines and love of dance! STEPS dance festival had 11 different schools attending this year with schools from Cut Knife, SK, Meadow Lake, SK, Kitscoty, Hardisty, Vegreville, Irma, Viking, Tofield, Oyen and Vermilion.

Ambers ability to tickle the ivories as a musician helped her on stage with such notable artists as Small Town Pistols, Tenille, and Victoria Banks to name a few. Her vocal richness is on records with George Canyon, and on stage with Hey Romeo’s Stacie Roper, Amanda Wilkinson, and indy pop sensation Michael Bernard plus many more. On stage with Amber saturday night was Tyler Vollrath from Bawlf Alberta, if you have to have a fiddle in the band Tyler is the guy. Amber caught Tyler off guard several times having him jump in on songs totally unrehearsed and then they pulled it off flawlessly.

Amber is just getting off the road from a radio tour that took her from Vancouver to Montreal and back again. Amber has a passion for giving back through holding fund-raising concerts, her current focus is on assisting families raise funds for adoption, which is an inspiration from her sister. Breaking news is that we are excited to hear that Amber will be returning to Vermilion Canada Day and centre stage at the Vermilion Fair Grounds.

Amber wrapped up the evening with a song that inspires us all to “make it count”.

Amber is in the process of releasing a new single next week.

Stephanie Brokop What better opportunity to grab life to the fullest on your 13th birthday than to take the stage with Amber Bauer and sing the cover “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen.

Amber heard Stephanie singing in Church and immediately knew she wanted to mentor her. Through Skype the two ladies have been working together to improve an already marvellous young voice.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES Observe Earth Week The VES staff had the opportunity to “Sneak It In” last week as part of the Healthy School Healthy Future initiatives. During recess breaks, staff could participate in hula hooping, yoga, jump rope, floor curling, step aerobics, scooter hockey, walking, circuit training, fitness tests, bench ball, pilates, and basketball.

We appreciate Leanne Lupul, Nadine Farkash, Rebecca McCullough, and Judy Walsh for helping us out with these activities.

The VES Klondike Relay team took part

in the “A” school competition the evening of April 8 at the U of A Butterdome. 37 students from Grades 4-6 competed in ball throw, long jump, and sprint relays.

The team was competitive in all events, and dominant in the boys’ field events.

Our competitors came home with many ribbons which will be presented at our April assembly. They all displayed great sportsmanship, teamwork, and spirit, representing our school well.

Thanks to the legion of loyal supporters who made the trip west, and to the parents who so patiently waited for our late return.

This year was the first year the team competed as the VES Jaguars. The new track shirts looked great, and the athletes

still ran like cheetahs.

Earth week will be held April 14-17 this year. We will be learning about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling and how our choices affect our environment.

As a school, we will create a poster focusing on reusing, clean our school grounds, participate in a litter-less lunch, as well as a many more fun activities. At the assembly, the Grade ones are going to present how they can make a difference in their environment.

The Superintendent’s Public Speaking Contest is back again this year at Vermilion Lakeland College’s Alumni Theater.

School level speak offs are being hosted

and school level representatives are being identified for the April 30 event. The topic for Grade 4-6 students is ‘If I could be my principal for just one day’. The school level competitions will come to an end by April 17 as this is the date that the information on who will be representing our school will need to be sent in to central office so they can finalize the program. Everyone is welcome to attend the contest on April 30.

Dates to Remember are April 8-15 – Book Fair, April 15 – Career Dress-up Day, April 16 – AR Assembly, April 18-27 – Easter Holidays, April 29 (Tuesday) – PAC Meeting at 7 p.m., May 14 – Early Dismissal at 2 p.m., May 16 & 19 – No School, May 21 – AR Assembly at 10:45.

Local Mom Prepares For The Opening Of Her New Greenhouse Near Kitscoty Billi J Miller Farm Photography Submitted

Busy farm wife and Mom of three, near Kitscoty is following a dream and opening her own greenhouse this spring.

F’laura n’ Company (pronounced: “flora”) opens May 1, 2014 and is located only ten minutes from Kitscoty.

I talked to her on her farm in her greenhouse about taking the leap to entre-

preneurship and following her dream of “working with nature”.

As a busy Mom to three boys and helping her husband run their farm – Laura has had her hands more than full. So, what made her decide to add “entrepreneur” to her list of responsibilities?

“I’ve been thinking about it for several years, but it may have never crossed my mind at all if circumstances hadn’t been what they were. Those of us who farm in central Alberta refer to 2002 as ‘the year

of the drought’ - it simply didn’t rain. Most farmers in our area didn’t even pull their combines out of the shed that fall.”

“I’ve always taken pride in having a beautiful yard but due to the drought and money being tight buying flowers for a yard the size of mine can be expensive, so I starting all my plants from seed that year. As it turned out, I ended up with way more plants than I knew what to do with, so after I gave away as many as I could to friends and neighbors I sold what was left at farmers market. The next thing I knew ladies were calling to ask if I would be selling plants in the spring, or if I would start specific varieties for them. For the next few years I sold plants to a modest clientele made up mostly of friends and neigh-

bors.”

By the spring of 2013 Laura’s tiny greenhouse was bursting at the seams, and she found herself “walking sideways” to get from one end to the other.

Serendipitously, when she found out a local greenhouse owner was retiring and selling her buildings it seemed like the perfect solution to her space issue.

“With some encouragement from my husband I decided to take the leap and start my own greenhouse business,” said Laura.

2014 Vermilion Music Festival Results Cindy Millar, Promotions Director for Vermilion And District Music Festival Submitted The talents of the young and y o u n g - a t- h e a r t f r o m Ve r m i l i o n and the area once again were highlighted in the four days of performances at the Vermilion and District Musical Festival. Throughout it all, the dedication of the participants, adjudicators, parents and the Music Fes tiva l B o a rd p rovi d e d a u ni q u e environment where strings, band, vocal, and speech ar ts were given special attention and assistance for encouragement and further growth.

Fe s t i v a l Tr e a s u r e r R o b e r t McFadzean noted how positive and encouraging the adjudication was for the registrants. “They gave each performer a positive, encouraging

adjudication, along with construct i v e c r i t i c i s m . Ev e n t h e y o u n g est…and those who were struggling would have come away feeling good about their efforts.”

On the par t of the adjudicators, th e exp erience was e qually p ositive. Marliss Weber, adjudicator for speech arts and vocals felt that any notion of competition was missing the point. “It’s about education (it is) a great opportunity to learn from peers (as well as) adjudicators.”

First United Church and Parkview Alliance Church hosted the performances throughout the week. 199 entrants represented Vermilion and the surrounding communities.

Sunday, Parkview hosted a showcase of the talent seen and heard throughout the week. As has been the tradition of the festival, partici p a n t s w h o d i d n o t w i n a n awa rd showcased their talents beside

t h o s e w h o d i d , exe m p l i f y i n g t h e dedication of all participants.

Kelsey E arle, mis tress of ceremonies commented on the value of the Festival. “It was a place where I could excel and be myself.” When a s ke d w h a t Ke l s e y w a s d o i n g , i t reflected the Festival’s influence on her present endeavors. As one who excell e d in sp e e ch a r t s (a m o n gs t other disciplines) she has turned her interests toward a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology, while singing with the francophone Chorale St.Jean.

So You Think You’re A Good Support!

I believe we all think we are or have the potential to be a good support. We have a caring heart and try to understand those who grieve and their journey, and sometimes even give suggestions on how to get over or through their grief. After all we have had losses, too. Sometimes we feel inadequate in being able to help ease the pain, especially when it comes to children. They lack the words that we use and they seem to be playing and doing fine and not overly affected in their grief and change in their lives.

They are young and will get over it.

Will they?

How do we respond to the elderly in their grief? Do we presume that because they have lived many years they have all the skills needed to move

on? They don’t discuss their losses, perhaps they have forgotten them.

What about the losses they endure now in the sunset years? Losses of friends, spouse, home, community, health, independence and identity.

Who is there to remember with them the memories of the past?

Do we consider those with mental challenges who may not be able to verbalize their pain. Do they feel the pain of loss and grieve their many losses? Who will listen?

Fo l l ow i n g i s a p o e m by a u th o r unknown that sor t of says what those grieving need, from the truly supportive persons in their lives.

Please Listen When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, You have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel that way,

You are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, You have failed me, strange as that may seem.

Listen! All I ask is that you listen.

Don’t talk or do- just hear me.

And I can do for myself; I am not helpless. Maybe discouraged and faltering but not helpless.

When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, Yo u co n tr i b u te to my fe a r a n d inadequacy.

But when you accept as a simple fact that I feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, Then I can stop trying to convince you and get about this business of understanding what ’s behind

this irrational feeling.

And when that’s clear, the answers are obvious and I don’t need advice.

I r r a ti o n a l fe e l i n g s m a ke s e n s e when we know what’s behind them.

Perhaps that’s why prayer works, sometimes, for some peopleBecause God is mute, and He doesn’t give advice or try to fix things.

God just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.

So please listen and just hear me.

We are entering the spring of the year and for most it is an exciting time of rebirth and sun but often for those grieving it can be a reminder of lives forever changed and brightness in their lives at a distance. For depression and isolation to set in.

Record Cattle Prices Spark Increased Demand For Price Insurance Agriculture Financial Services Corporation Submitted

Higher Prices Bring Higher Risk, Says Market Analyst As Alberta’s Livestock Price Insurance Program expands across Western Canada this month, demand for price insurance in Alberta is growing as cattle producers in the County of Vermilion River and across the province witness cattle prices that have been hitting record highs over the last few months.

“Cattle producers are experiencing some of the strongest prices in history on their cattle, and they don’t want to risk losing that money if prices fall for some reason. That’s why so many

Alber ta producers are using price insurance to protect the high cattle prices they’re seeing today. Participation in cattle price insurance has tripled in Alberta over the last year because it gives producers an Alberta floor price that locks in up to 95 per cent of the future forecasted price on their cattle. And it doesn’t put a ceiling on the price they can sell their cattle for if markets keep climbing,” explains Brenda Hagen, with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) – the provincial Crown corporation that has administered livestock price insurance since the program was first unveiled in Alberta five years ago.

Now renamed the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), Hagen says the success and uptake of price insurance in Alberta was a major factor in the decision to expand it across Western Canada this spring. AFSC will now deliver the program – which has only been available in Alberta – to cattle and hog producers across the West on behalf of the federal and provincial governments.

As WLPIP rolls out across the region, there will be no changes to the program in Alberta, says Hagen.

Give a Hoot! Join in the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Walk for Wildlife Canadian Wildlife Federation Submitted

The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is hosting its fifth annual Walk for Wildlife.

Kicking off during National Wildlife Week (April 6-12), the Walk For Wildlife campaign runs until International Day of Biodiversity, May 22 and gives people across the country an opportunity to show their support for conservation while making time to connect with nature themselves.

This year’s goal is to raise awareness and funds for species at risk, like the burrowing owl.

Burrowing owls, one of the smallest members of the owl family, were once common in western Canada. Today, they are listed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. In spite of recovery efforts, this little owl has grown even scarcer.

The reasons for its decline include habitat loss and fragmentation, lack of suitable

prey, environmental contaminants, and other hardships on its breeding grounds in Canada and on its wintering range in Central and South America.

Through Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Endangered Species Program, CWF has been working to conserve species at risk like burrowing owls and their habitats for future generations through research and recovery support, advocacy and awareness.

Becoming part of the Walk for Wildlife is easy. Participants can visit WalkforWildlife.ca to register, start collecting pledges, then head out to a local park, nature trail or conservation area and spend some in the wild. People can take part informally with family and friends or head out with a local organization by joining in one of the #Walk for Wildlife events listed on the website.

For every pledge received, participants will become part of the CWF loyalty program and receive special rewards. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a special Burrowing owl t-shirt. Top fundraiser

will have a chance to win a trip for two to Calgary for a special conservation experience at the Calgary Zoo. For those who just want to head outdoors for some quality time in nature, they can log their Walk for Wildlife on the interactive on-line map.

The Vermilion Community Art Club held its fourth Annual Art Show and Sale on April 11 and 12 at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

The show started with the meet the artist wine and cheese gathering from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., for sponsors and invited guests, with Justin Walker performing live music.

Doors opened at 6:30 p.m. for the general public. On April 12, the show opened at 9:30 a.m. for the public to come and see the art on display and for sale.

The show was a combination of art market and show. There was an area for art sales, art show for predominately new artists and also a discounted art area.

John Lychak, a local artist who was raised on a farm in the Clandonald area and later moved to Vermilion, said it was his oldest sister who sparked his love of art at the age of ten, when she gave him his first set of art supplies for Christmas.

John, though not formally trained as an artist, says he never misses an opportunity to take an evening class or weekend workshop to help broaden his abilities.

John uses many different mediums for his pieces such as pencil, pen, graphite, oil and acrylic paints.

Joan Blamire was originally from Calgary but moved to Vermilion 34 years ago and had her pieces for sale and viewing at the Vermilion art show and sale.

Her interest in art started with stained glass in three dimensional geometric pieces.

Joan joined the Vermilion art group four years ago, from there she got the incentive to broaden her horizons. She went to the Red Deer College of Art taking summer sessions where she started her work with acrylic paints.

She then went to the Calgary School of Art and took a course from artist Samantha d’eSilva from Brazil who created the “Fearless Method”, which is painting without restrictions.

Joan does not consider herself an artist, but her art is more of a hobby.

During the art show Joan demonstrated the “Fearless” technique with that she uses.

Sandra Miller, Chairperson of the Vermilion Art Show and Sale, said she was overwhelmed by the amount of community support and is very grateful for the support of the numerous sponsors and the number of individuals who turned out to see the amazing artwork presented by so many talented artists.

Area News VIL Receives Funding For Accessibility Upgrade Karen Nedzielski Reporter The Village of Innisfree Library was recently awarded funding through Alberta’s Community Incentive Program to assist in remodelling the former principal’s office of the Millennium Building (former Innisfree School) to make way for the installation of a Wheelchair ramp, automated door and paved parking lot.

MLA for Vermilion Lloydminster, Dr. Richard Starke formally presented the

organization with the $20,000 grant on April 12 where he commended the volunteers for the work in “breathing life in to the old building” and providing a viable service in the community.

A number of renovations to the building have been made since the library idea was born including floor refinishing, installation of a wheelchair accessible washroom and combining two former classrooms into one to provide the area for the library.

Dewberry School Susanna Pankiw Submitted All Star Week Stellar per formances rocked Dewb err y School this week! From badminton to dance all-stars dominated the docket!

Over the last week our senior high attended a badminton competition at Lloydminster Composite High School and they served up a mixture of high medals. Bringing home gold, Lucas Dennill and Mikayla Franke for mixed doubles and in girls doubles Rebekah Surina and Kayla Maynes. A silver medal also went out to Rebekah Surina for girls

singles. Our junior high students put on their competitive faces and swung their rackets like troopers in the junior high tournament in Kitscoty on April 5.

Kyle Kjenner grabbed the gold in boys singles. Only a few days later they hit the road again and battled it out on April 8 for the BTPS North Junior High Playdowns. Dewberry rocked the gold medals: Kyle Kjenner for boys singles, Kyra Weidmark and Daneca Goldsmith for girls doubles, Remington Oneschuk and Keagan Rewuski for boys doubles and Vincent Guan for Grade 9 boys singles. Kenedi Wood smashed the girls singles for bronze and Tyler Manchen and Jenna Bowman drove home the bronze for mixed doubles. Our gold and

silver medal winners as well as Kenedi both advance to BTPS Division finals on Tuesday, April 15! Fantastic show, players!

Jillian Stevenson danced her little h e a r t o u t a t t h e D a n ce I nv a s i o n Competition in Fort Saskatchewan on April 5. Her hip hop group performed on stage, with this being Jillian’s debut in the competitive field, they wiggled and jiggled to a high silver standing! Keep up the remarkable dance moves, Jillian. We can’t wait to see you perform in Lloydminster during the Easter Break.

We were honored with a visit from our Superintendant, Bob Allen this past Friday. He had the opportunity to

connect with the elementary students as they were engaged in buddy reading as well as the junior high students as he strolled through the classrooms. We hope that he enjoyed his time here as much as we did!

In light of all these successes we should remember the wise words of Ralph Marston, “Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. LLC Animal Health Students Honours Lloydminster SPCA Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Lakeland College’s first year Animal Health Technology students held an appreciation presentation on April 10 at the Mead Building to honour the Lloydminster Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the contributions it has made towards the education of the program’s students.

Throughout the year, the Lloydmin-

ster SPCA provides support by forwarding animals in their care, to the College for students to practise general animal and kennel care, clinic record keeping and hands-on labs. The students are in charge with the overall care of the animals while learning in an animal clinic setting.

Throughout the year, students have held a number of fundraisers including bake sales, a November spaghetti supper and also sold over 400 pet stockings during the Christmas season of which all the proceeds were donated to the Lloyd-

minster SPCA as a thank you for assisting with the students’ education process.

During the final presentation the class made a donation of pet food, clinic supplies including a microscope and cat scale as well as other much needed items. The total value of the donation was over $3,500 and in attendance to accept the donation were Jon Punshon - Lloydminster SPCA Operations Manager and Nadine Graham - Executive Director.

The Village of Mannville is accepting proposals for the Taking Action to Manage Energy (TAME) Buildings Initiative. This Initiative is to undertake several actions that will address selected Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) that will reduce the Municipality’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Village of Mannville has been awarded a ‘Taking Action to Manage Energy’ (TAME) grant under the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC). The MCCAC is an Agreement between the Province of Alberta, as represented by the Minister of Environment and the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) whereby the Province agreed to provide the AUMA with a grant to create a project called the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, to facilitate energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by municipalities.

T h e a n n u a l To w n a n d C o u n t r y Bonspiel was held at the Marwayne Curling Club March 13-16. There were 19 teams from Tulliby Lake, Lloydminster, Islay, Vermilion, Derwent and Marwayne participating in the “Luck of the Irish” Spiel.

The A Event was captured by Manley Ranching of Lloydminster, the B Event was won by Rob Kent of Marwayne, and the C Event winners was Mike Holowaychuk of Marwayne.

This spiel brought the season for the Marwayne Curling Club to a close. It was a successful and fun year and we look forward to next year! Through the season the curling club runs weekly leagues for Sturling Curling, Ladies’ and Men’s. We also host three bonspiels.

Careers King And Rowe Attend North Bowl Try-Outs

Two local high school football players, Damian King and Corey Rowe, received an invitation to attend the High School Football Alberta Senior Bowl North try-outs held at Commonwealth Stadium on April 4-6. King started football in his Grade 12 year of school and was awarded the Rookie of the Year, Offensive Back of the Year, and was also runner up for the Special Teams Player of the Year.

Rowe started playing in Grade 9 playing different positions and last year played as starting quarterback and won MVP last year as well as Offensive Player of the Year. Friday they did physical training, Saturday was drills with all the activities being held at the Commonwealth Field house. On Sunday the two boys were given the opportunity to scrimmage in the Commonwealth Stadium with other players invited to the event. Although neither of the boys were chosen for the team, both agree it was a great experience and were glad they attended.

Epidemics And Pandemics At Mannville School Since we are on Easter break for Earth Day, our school committee has decided to have April 16 as our school’s Earth Day. For Earth Day we would like to work on using as little energy through the day as possible, by turning off some extra lights and SMARTboards when not in use. Our school has entered to participate in Lights Out Canada (as featured in the Superintendent’s Memo).

We would also like to encourage the kids

to pack a litter-less lunch. There will be no contest or prizes; making our school more aware of the day and the benefits to our Earth is our reward.

Sixteen enthusiastic chefs from Grades 4 – 6 have been meeting with Mrs. Denise Campbell on Mondays after school to cook, bake, and learn about nutrition. Some examples of foods that they have prepared include lentil granola bars, smoothies, cinnamon crisps, yogurt parfaits, mini pizzas, hummus, salsa, yogurt dip and pita chips.

Photo submitted. community. In Grade one social they had learnt what a community is and what a good citizen looks like. And in Grade seven language, they were learning about presentation: how to properly present information on posters and what they can do to enhance the overall presentation of their work. Mrs. Hinton and Mrs. Wagner brought the two classes together and they went on a walk around town to see what our community has to offer. The next time they met they put a poster together that showcased our community and examples of good citizenship!

Also, Mr. Starner and Mr. Maron had the Grade seven and eight classes studying the concepts of epidemics and pandemics by “infecting” their fellow students with a fictional disease. Each class was given data sheets and were told to make physical

contact with students and staff around the school and record each instance. Students were then given a research project which allowed them to compare their data from the activity with real diseases that have affected people around the world throughout history.

Because the Grade three class learn about Ukrainian culture in social studies, it has become a tradition for Mrs. Campbell’s students to try their hand at decorating Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanka). On Tuesday, April 8, the students used the traditional method of using a kystka (stylus), beeswax, and permanent dyes to create their masterpieces.

The Wheatland Lacrosse League consists of teams from Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Kitscoty, Vermilion, Wainwright and this season they welcome a new team from Flagstaff County.

The Tykes Vermilion Roar played a home game against Flagstaff Fusion on April 9, and the children were full of smiles and giggles as they came r u n n i n g f ro m t h e d r e s s i n g ro o m eager to get in the rink for their 20 minute warm up with rubber balls and lacrosse sticks.

Once the children began their two fifteen minute periods, a more serious tone struck the arena as coaches S e a n Te n n a n t f o r t h e Ve r m i l i o n Roar and Vince Edward for Flagstaff Fusion, began giving pointers to the children.

The Flagstaff Fusion won the Tykes game with a score of 5-3. Later that evening the Vermilion Roar Novice d i v i si o n p l aye d a g a i n s t F l a g s t af f Fusion with a final score of 2-9, with Flagstaff being the victors. At 8 p.m. the final game for the evening was the Bantam Division with Vermilion Roar being successful in winning against Flagstaff with a score of 10- 2.

Spring Concert Fun At VES

The bright and smiling Spring time faces were shining at the annual Spring Concert held at VES on April 11 at the school’s gymnasium.
