Busy Weekend For Little Royal Rodeo Karen Nedzielski Reporter Lakeland College’s annual Little Royal Ro d e o to o k p la ce this p as t weekend at the Vermilion Campus and there was no shortage of events to take in throughout the three-day event.

Friday saw a number of competi-

tors in the Western Canadian Judging competition where participants from across the country judged a wide variety of animals and objects, placing them in order of quality according to each participant.

A cattle sorting and ranch roping demonstration spurred spectators interests followed by a stock dog demo at the Equine Building. It would

be Erin Rooney from Veteran, Alberta with her dog Jake who would take the event, putting the sheep through the course in a time of 2:39 seconds.

The evening was topped off with a ranch rodeo in the evening.

Roping Demonstration Nothing Short of Satisfying Cattle Sorting in the Equine Centre

Participants of the Little Royal Rodeo demonstrated roping cattle in groups at the Equine Centre on Lakeland College Campus on March 14. The cattle they were using are used to being roped as they are used for practice and this made it easier for the ropers to flip the cow down and rope them. Similarly in the sorting demo, you don’t want to work the cattle up to make them spook and start losing the pounds. One roper would concentrate on looping around the neck, one on the back legs and the other would get off the horse and tie them.

4H Clubs Prepare For Western Canadian Judging Competition Deanna Krys, Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Submitted Each year 4H clubs hold judging workshops to sharpen their skills for competitions such as the Western Canadian Judging Competition at Lakeland College held on March 14. In this competition 4H clubs as well as college and university judging clubs can enter a team of four to judge a variety of stations for points and are later rewarded with ribbons or trophies.

This year the Vermilion 4H Beef Club invited other clubs within the Vermilion area to join their judging workshop on March 12. In attendance at the workshop with the two beef club teams were the Vermilion 4H Sheep Club team, a member from the Vermilion 4H Outdoors Club and a member from the Vermilion 4H Baking

Club.

Derek Jones, Vermilion Beef Club General Leader, organized and hosted the event by giving the members valuable tips on judging various types of livestock and grain as well as pointers on how to give oral reasons. Travis Dow, of the Vermilion Sheep Club, explained how to judge market lambs and breeding ewes. Brie Watson of the Vermilion Outdoors Club explained what can be expected of the Mystery Class. The evening ended with all members judging a grain class and giving oral reasons to the group. The results, of how well they placed the grain were based on the results of our official judge for the evening, Kenzie Hickman of the Vermilion Baking Club.

Trading In Winter For Spring Karen Nedzielski Editor

Spring has sprung, at least according to the calendar. On Thursday, March 20 the spring equinox will take place and the measurement of daylight and darkness will equal each other. The warmer weather really helps it feel like the end of winter may actually be near.

After a long cold winter, the more moderate temperatures are a very welcome relief to the cabin fever outbreak many have experienced this year.

I think it is safe to say, most people feel as

though we have earned a much needed break from the frigid grip of Old Man Winter.

As the days get longer and the mercury continues to rise, many people are “waking” from the winter hibernation they have been living through, getting outdoors to find beautiful weather just in time to mark the official start of spring much like the wild animals of the countryside.

As I make my way to work each morning I have been keeping an eye on the smaller herds of mule deer just west of Minburn.

During the cold spell, they seemed to bunch together in large herds numbering in the dozens. As the weather warms the herds seem to have branched out, forming groups of six or eight in total.

The birds seem to know the weather is

changing and have been singing the songs of springtime. On a few mornings they have been holding “bird conferences” in the spruce tree outside our house.

Many people, including myself, have taken time to get out and partake in some springtime activities. Last weekend my husband and I held our first wiener roast of the season with some of our friends. It seems to have become a yearly tradition, sitting next to a campfire with friends enjoying a lot of laughs and the taste of fire cooked hot dogs.

Many outdoor winter sports like skiing and skating will be coming to an end and will be replaced with hiking in the Vermilion Provincial Park and yard work.

But is winter really over? How can we be sure? Well, quite frankly we don’t know and

you can bet the Vermilion area will experience at least one more winter storm before the green grass peaks its way through the brown colour that has coated the lawns and fields.

Before long people will be complaining about the hot dry summer and how they are forced to mow their lawns every few days. I for one will guarantee that I will not complain for quite some time, as I sit back and relax riding around on the lawnmower, swatting mosquitoes the whole time.

The truth is, some people will never be happy with either of the situations. In the wise words of the guest speaker at the Vermilion Regional Partnership Breakfast, Kevin Burns.

“Happiness is not a result, it’s a choice.”

Letter To The Editor Clearing the record on grain movement Dear Editor, I would like to thank Mr. Walter Mytz for sharing his thoughts on grain movement in the March 3 edition of the Vermilion Voice.

I am not surprised to see that farmers and indeed all Canadians remain engaged in this issue. That is why it has never been more important to provide an update on what the Government has done over the past several days after months of hard work to address the concerns of farmers.

I have explained from the outset that our Government has been working with all stakeholders in order to take the action necessary – right now – to get grain to market. We have not only been organizing an immediate solution, but have been working on a long term solution to the problem. This is exactly what we have done through our March 7

announcement, and separately through the legislation we will introduce once the House of Commons resumes, which will provide at least part of a long term plan. Will all of farmers’ grain be shipped before next fall? No, not likely. But things will speed up now and into the future. There is more to be done.

The Ministers of Transport and Agriculture announced last week that an Order in Council took immediate effect, requiring both Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to move a specified quantity of grain per week for a 4-week period. Not only will the railways need to move a combined target of 1,000,000 metric tonnes per week; CN and CP are required to report to the Minister of Transport on a weekly basis. This volume is more than double what is being moved currently and puts a direct legal obligation on the railways – with penalties for non-compli-

ance of up to $100,000 per day.

Furthermore, the Minister has also said that permanent legislation will be introduced which promises to ensure that Canada maintains a world-class logistics system that gets products to market more efficiently. I look forward to reviewing the contents of the bill when Parliament resumes later this month.

I do have to question Mr. Mytz’s argument that rail moves more crude oil than grain. Grain remains a significant priority for railways. Appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, Michael Murphy, senior representative at CP Rail, testified that crude oil accounts for 3 per cent of the railway’s business. Grain and grain products are six times the size of the business, at 20 per cent.

The numbers are similar for CN. Crude oil and grain can both be moved in greater quantities

and indeed must be. I firmly believe that railways are committed to moving the grain and I’m confident that our action in recent days will give them the mandate they need.

The last thing our Government has been on this issue is “asleep at the wheel.” Just like every other farmer, I welcome the news that grain will start to move because I have canola, wheat and oats in bags on the ground. As I predicted, we have seen significant improvements since February and I’m certain that farmers will see further improvements in the coming weeks.

To be fair to the railways, they have increased the movement of all commodities each year for the past four: that is, up until the end of November. I expect them to continue this trend. After all the more they move the more money they make.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigewitch Submitted

The senior high curling team represented Mannville School at the ASAA Curling Provincials in Leduc on March 6 - 8. The team was treated royally with official opening ceremonies and a team banquet. Their first game was a win against the Beaumont mixed team early Friday morning. Their next two games were Saturday morning against the reigning champion team from Chauvin and the mixed team from Hanna. Both were great games and a wonderful display of sportsmanship, but resulted in losses for the Mannville team. The team, Davin Charron, Andrea Bury, Brandan Lyster, and Karlee Melnyk, would like to thank Melanie Bury and Tara Tod for coaching them this year, as well as everyone who travelled to Leduc to cheer them on. It was a fantastic way to end the senior high curling season.

The school will be focussing on healthy food choices this month, learning about “Choose Most Often” foods and snacks and the four food groups. Everyone will learn about eating the rainbow, the importance of

eating foods from all the food groups.

In Mrs. Wagner’s CTS classes her high school students just finished their ‘International Cuisine’ module and have been busy learning about the different foods from around the world as well as preparing different dishes using spices and herbs most commonly used in different countries.

As Grade 11 and 12 students start their next module, ‘Entertaining with Food’, they will be planning for and preparing meals for different catered events such as a staff BBQ and a small business BBQ. This semester Grade 10 and 11 students have been introduced to a new perspective on health and wellness through a CTS option called HSS 1010 with Miss Almberg. As part of this class, students have been coming up with their own views on health and how active living plays a role in their lives. In collaboration with our Healthy Schools Initiative this year our Health Champions taking HSS 1010 prepare their own wellness activities as a presentation for their peers to participate in. You will find them outside every Friday for the rest of the semester getting active and learning new games. So far they have

Hoooya, I am liking that warm sunshine until 7:30 in the p.m., it actually brightens up my spirits and gives me more energy, which I need badly. Time to shake off the cobwebs.

I like this daylight saving time. I wish we could just simply stay on this system all year long. Also, after that recent deepfreeze the plus temperatures are also so welcoming.

That white stuff is disappearing slowly but surely, also lifting the spirits, Thursday, March 20 is the first day of spring this year.

It feels good. The spring bear hunting season is in the air which starts in April, I have had many a fond memory spring bear hunting and many things trigger those memories. In the spring a raven call instantly reminds me of bears.

Other certain smells and sounds also trigger memories. I don’t do a spring bear hunt any longer as bear is not my preferred table fare. I won’t take a bear…just to take a bear, but the adventures were outstanding.

It’s one of the best cures for cabin fever just getting out there usually involves a lot of quading with off-highway 4x4s, getting dirty and wet…good times in warm fresh air.

I will help anyone that needs a hand just for the adventure…I also can be a good video guy and/or camp cook. However, that may be scarier than a mad bear.

Speaking of mad bears, all the crazy antics make the adventure. Crossing a deep creek and seeing fish swim-

ming everywhere, chasing them for hours catching them with our hands and safely releasing them.

Sounds crazy, just a wilderness survival instinct kicking in from the caveman days I think, but a lot of fun and no fish were hurt during that adventure. We on the other hand were soaking wet and bruised from head to toe.

Exploring new ground and finding antler sheds are adventures many set entire weekends aside just to experience. With spring bear hunting, that is just part of the adventure that is just a bonus.

As a mad bear deterrent, many of us carry large cans of bear spray which is potent Capsicum pepper spray made from hot cayenne peppers and other deterrent chemicals. The spray blasts out to 8 meters and is very effective as a bear deterrent that can be used with no permanent harm to the bears, said users on the hand is an adventure in itself.

Picture this; my younger bow technician Blaine that has been shooting a bow at our shop since he was 14, is now my hunting partner. He is perched near 7 meters up a tree. He is in a tiny portable tree stand just big enough to sit and possibly stand if needed, with no room for error. On the opposite side of the tree is my smiling face in another mini stand.

I was there to video and enjoy. I don’t know how but I am sure my stand is even smaller. It’s early evening and not much is moving so we are having a whispered conversation. No sooner did I say that, I looked under our stands at the base of tree and there sat a younger bear, wide eyed staring up at us.

He appeared in super stealth like a boreal forest ghost. So I asked him if he had his bear spray handy, which he had to dig out of his pack, same place mine was. Not so good if a situation ever came up like just described. Blaine had the canister in hand and was reading the label, I whispered asking whether he remembered how to use it. He was removing the safety cap and replacing it in good practice.

I then whispered “When is the last time you tested it?”

He looked at me and said “You have to test it?”

I responded with “Yes once a year a super short blast will just confirm it is still charged”.

He responded with a “Huh?” It was a peaceful and quite evening. I scanned the thick spruce forest for more bear as the bear at the base of tree had disappeared as quickly as he appeared, but there would be more.

It was eerie quiet and I focused on every little movement. I was sure there would be another bear appearing any second now.

That’s when a loud “PSSSSTTTT” near rattled me out of the tree.

I turned my head towards Blaine to see him holding the bear spray canister outward and a big red stain on a poplar tree a couple meters straight out from us.

Before I could say “eeek!!” you can’t test it now way up in a tree, I saw a large red cloud drifting towards us in the light evening breeze and panic took over.

I contemplated taking a nose dive out of the stand, but glancing at the ground that was so far away. Fear and common sense took over so I took a big breath, closed my eyes and hugged the tree.

Ya, that didn’t work well as one can only hold their breath so long and it’s human nature to open your eyes to impending doom. Soon we both stood there coughing with body fluids flowing from our eyes, nose and mouth. As I looked at Blaine through blurred vision hugging the tree I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry more than we were already. Being the demented bush monkeys we are, somehow we were both hysterically laughing.

When we could finally see, we had to climb down out of the tree and rinse our faces with bottles of water. After a half an hour we were no worse for wear and knew hands on that bear spray worked very well.

The slight overspray mist we experienced was nothing like a full face-on blast, which I really care NOT to ever experience and the lesson of the day was; watch the wind if you ever need to test or use bear spray.

I could write a novel of the adventures, antics and funny moments while spring bear hunting. I now realize it wasn’t the bears I was after on spring bear hunts.

When the Smoke Clears Life is an adventure, but you have to get out there and make it happen.

Laugh often, life is short!

As we go through life we, I think, take it for granted that we’re entitled to a certain degree of mobility and dexterity to do the tasks of taking care of ourselves and be capable of earning a living. I guess that includes some ability to think and make our own decisions too. I’d like to tell you all that can change in a heartbeat, just that your whole life can change. On the weekend of Jan. 25 and 26 I journeyed up to Slave Lake to visit my youngest son Gordon and headed back for home on the 27th, I stopped overnight at Ardrossan to visit my son Jim and his family and on the morning of the 28th I was preparing to drive to Holden and pick up some copies of my recordings at my buddy Ray Gathercole’s place, I called him to say I’d be there soon to pick them up and he told me they’d be ready when I got there. I guess they should have been since as of Feb. 18, it would have been three weeks since I left them there and fell on the icy yard by my son’s house and suddenly found myself on the ground looking up at the sky, wondering how on earth I got there!

Like I said in a heartbeat my whole life had drastically been changed, luckily in my case I’m getting better. Anyway, I

wondered how I can get up. I was stunned for a moment I guess and it took it seemed a monumental effort to even move.

Summoning all my strength I rolled on my hands and sore old knees and crawled alongside my van and managed to open the door. On trying to stand, I found my left leg just wouldn’t respond and it took all I had in me to pull myself up into the seat and lay on the horn. My son Jim came out of his house, surprised to see me still there.

He was immediately aware of the fact that I was in serious trouble and had to basically carry me into the house. He said, “Dad you’ve had a concussion, and brooked no argument on the subject of taking me to get checked out.

After a two hour or so wait, I was attended by a doctor and told I was needing an M.R.I. and was whisked by ambulance to the Royal Alex Hospital where it was learned I had bruised my brain and caused it to hemorrhage. I was put in intensive care over night and given another M.R.I in the morning. No further bleeding they said, that really relieved me as had there been further bleeding, I might have had to have surgery. My lucky day! My time as an invalid was just beginning as I definitely couldn’t stand or walk, and needed two people to help me to the toilet. That took a little getting used to. On further checking by a special doctor, I was informed that the chances of full recovery were good, but it

would take time for the swelling to go down and the blood reabsorbed into the area it came from-yeah! All it would take was time, and the days seemed so long. That’s when my beautiful friends and family came through. What a wonderful feeling to know so many really cared.

I was in a room with three other folks, one a C.N.R employee who switched and worked with trains and he was walking beside a moving train that was going he thought about 10 miles per hour when he turned his ankle and fell against the train.

He was able to keep from going under the train wheels, but the steps that hang down pummeled him time and time again until the train passed. It seemed like every bone on his left side was broken, shoulders, arms, ribs, pelvis and leg. He was alive by a miracle. Then right beside me was a young man of about 35 years old who had been in a wheelchair since he was about 15 years old. He is on dialysis three times a week and it takes all morning. He is a victim of our medical system and can’t even scratch his own nose and has to be spoon fed by a nurse. He also is incontinent and has to be cleaned up like a baby. Then I heard them telling him they wanted to hang a bag on his side instead. A lot handier and he wouldn’t soil his bed sores, it was about then I sure thanked the Lord for bringing me to the place where I again took stock and TO COUNT MY BLESSINGS. I think we

The Village of Marwayne, Alberta is excited about the coming Pee Wee C Provincial tournament, scheduled for March 20 through 23.

With eight teams attending the tournament, more than 140 players along with their parents and fans will descend upon Marwayne for next weekend’s games.

The Village is also very excited as three of their minor hockey teams will also be vying for a Provincial title in the coming weeks. The teams are the Pee Wee Tier 1 which will travel to Provost, Atoms who will travel to Oyen and the Pee Wee Tier 3 team who will host their Provincial finals this coming weekend in Marwayne.

The Marwayne Minor Hockey Association consists of a mear 67 players so to see three of the teams carry on to the Provincial level is a “feather in the cap” for the small village.

The PeeWee Tier 1 team finished the 2013-2014 season with a total of 34 wins, 5 losses and 3 ties. The Pee Wee Tier 1 team also won the league championship this year for their division.

The Pee Wee Tier 3 team finished the year with a record of 22 wins, 5 losses and 3 ties. Most coaches are parents but this year the Peewee Tier 3 team has an uncle Zach Hines, serving as coach.

Maywarne has previously hosted a Provincial tournament in 2008,2010 and 2012 which event organizer Charity Cooke said turned out to be a great fundraiser for the arena.

“It takes lots of volunteers and volunteer hours to put on such a big event but it is an excellent experience for our players,” she said.

Cooke added that any profits made from the tournament will be put towards arena renovations and upgrades.

Wild things move fast. Internet access has launched us into a world where anything seems attainable from even some of the most remote locations.

Yet, as we might expect in a universe where balance rules, a powerful tool offering infinite possibilities of all things very, very good simultaneously opens the creaking door allowing opportunities for the very, very disturbing and degrading.

Humans are versatile like that.

Berners-Lee, along with a global community known as the World Wide Web Consortium, has launched a mission to come up with a kind of Magna Carta for the Web. The historic document is most famous for a clause that guarantees that no “free man” will be stripped of rights or property, imprisoned or exiled “except by the lawful judgment of his equals.”

It’s an enormous task that will require careful consideration and consultation with players from around the world. The lawless global village that is the Internet now is a place where anything goes.

Freedom means a lot of things to a variety of people. Protecting us from unleashed government surveillance and censorship is paramount, but establishing parameters for what is and what is not permissible content and acceptable usage will no doubt be contentious.

Perhaps a new Magna Carta for the Net might somehow include provisions that clearly set out a few standards of human decency to which the majority of equally “free men and women” of the world collectively choose to adhere. In a world so replete with possibility, it’s more than slightly pitiful that we have to legislate for human ‘creature’ kindness and common respect.

Vipers Awarded Funds Through CIP

The Vermilion Vipers Swim Club has just received a matching grant in the amount of $5,643 to help pay for upgrades to the club’s equipment. In a presentation made at MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke’s office on March 14, the club was presented the funds which club president Jason King said will go toward purchasing new starting blocks which cost approximately $1,500 each. The club is hoping to purchase five starting blocks to use them at the club’s swim meet on May 24, and throughout the club’s season which runs from May through August. Dr. Richard Starke made the presentation on behalf of Minister of Culture Heather Klimchuk with the funds being awarded through the Community Initiative Program (CIP). Spring Is In The Air We let out a much refreshed sigh of relief when we heard the wonderful chirpings of our friendly chickadees as they sang out, “Spring’s here!” Our hearts skipped a beat in anticipation of the transformations to come; more daylight hours, children jumping in puddles, green grass, pussy willows and new beginnings.

Awakenings and blossomings have been sprouting ever so slightly over the last few

weeks in Dewberry School. Students were acknowledged for their contributions to the school’s environment, and given out citizenship awards. The students were recognized for such things as leadership, empathy, organization, volunteerism, sportsmanship, perseverance and perfect attendance. These awards are special and any staff member can identify a student for them. It is refreshing to see the anticipation on the students’ faces as they wait to see if they have obtained an award, even more rewarding is observing the intention of the students and feeling the

Panther Pride Moments was initiated into this great celebratory event. It was an opportunity for staff and students to spontaneously appreciate another person and publically recognize something they should be proud of.

Our own Kyra Weidmark, participated in the RU Fast speed skating competition in Calgary on March 1 and 2, qualifying her for the Canada West Short Track. She placed first in her age class where she qualified for the short track nationals that will be held in Lethbridge, March 29 and 30. A few other students also were involved in the mixed competitions on Sunday, in division 2, Jace Weidmark - fifth, Jelena Parr - sixth, in Division 3 were Laramie Parr - seventh, and Division 6 was Presley Parr twelfth. Over the weekend of March 8 - 9 the Dewberry Atoms Colts team won the Tier II Division Championship. We shall savor these great Panther Pride Moments!

Our programming for elementary swimming lessons, breakfast club and junior/senior high track equipment will definitely flourish from the generous donation of $2,400 from the Dewberry School Council. The small but dedicated group of parents that represent the Dewberry School Council are always finding ways to support us and they spend endless volunteer hours to assist in any way they can, financial support is just one of the ways. Thank you so much to those parents who continually provide assistance. We are a better school because of

Jeff Johnson Is Alberta’s Minister Of Education Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association Submitted Curriculum Criticism Doesn’t Add Up: Preparing Students For A Modern Economy Requires The Basics Plus Much More Recently, much has been made of the government’s efforts to ensure that Alberta’s curriculum is more responsive to the many different ways in which students learn.

As Alberta’s Minister of Education, I feel parents deserve to hear directly from me about my ministry’s efforts to make the provincial curriculum better suited for a fastmoving and changing global environment.

Along with being the minister, I’m also a father of three children in the education system, and I too have experienced some of the frustrations expressed by parents in recent weeks. This is why I believe it is important for me to set the record straight about the reforms currently underway.

I understand why some parents would be concerned with the notion that the mastery of the “basics” –skills such as arithmetic and reading – will play a less important role in the new curriculum than they did before.

If this were the case, I would be concerned as well. But fortunately, nothing could be

further from the truth.

I wish to assure parents and students that these basic skills will serve as the foundation and starting point of every change made to the curriculum. What they won’t be is the end point. Through inquiry-based learning, we’ll build upon these basic, foundational skills by developing additional competencies that the business community and parents tell us are so critical.

The conventional method of teaching core concepts, whereby students rely heavily on memorization, versus a more engaged, inquiry-based method are not mutually exclusive approaches to education. In fact, I believe it is crucial that we develop a curriculum that uses the best of both approaches.

However, surviving on mere memorization is a thing of the past. The modern economy demands creativity and problem solving, the application of critical thinking and an ability to collaborate and communicate - skills which lie at the heart of Alberta’s curriculum redesign process.

Top performing education jurisdictions, like Alberta, have increased their focus on these 21st century skills. We can’t ignore that without strong abilities in these areas, our kids will be left behind.

Despite recent criticism, parents should know and take comfort in the fact that according to the most recent international tests our K-12 students remain at the top of international rankings. Alberta’s overall results are tremendously positive. Out of the 74 jurisdictions from around the world that took part in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey, Alberta ranked 11th in math, 5th in reading, and 4th in science. Of particular note is that Alberta’s 15 year olds are significantly outperforming Alberta’s adults in these OECD rankings.

Our strength and performance internationally is due in part to Alberta’s willingness to continually adapt. This year is a great example.

In response to years of consultation and research, under premier Redford, we recently launched some groundbreaking

initiatives. The new Duel Crediting program, for instance, blurs lines between K-12, post-secondary and industry credentialing. The High School Flexibility Program empowers teachers to customize learning to better address individual student need.

By eliminating PAT’s and implementing a more robust standardized assessment at the start of the school year, we will provide parents and teachers with better information on how to tailor each child’s education plan going forward and measure improvement throughout the year.

Curriculum needs to evolve as well. The days of a small group of educators taking 10 years to review curriculum by subject are long over. We need to be more nimble and create curriculum that is more in tune with the local community and economy.

Our curriculum must allow for creativity and excellence in teaching to shine through.

We must embrace the individuality of the learner and ensure subject experts are teaching our kids. In short, our curriculum must become more relevant.

We’ve been asked to listen and that’s exactly what we’re doing. But the truth is that Alberta is at the top because we have not been afraid to take action. I won’t apologize for putting the success of our children first but I also commit to listening in order to get it right.

At the end of the day we must ask ourselves, are we preparing our children for their future or for our past?

Purple Pinkie Day In Vermilion Schools Angelle Lemire Reporter

Students were educated through Vermilion Rotary Club on Polio eradication. Students and staff of all three schools in Vermilion took part in Purple Pinkie Day by dying their pinkies purple to symbolize what children in third world countries have done when they have been vaccinated for the deadly disease Polio, so noticeably as to not get doubled vaccinated. For every person that donated $1 it gave vaccinations to 4 children and $10 would vaccinate over 30.

Polio vaccinations through Rotary International started back in 1985 and just as of last weekend, World Health Organization (WHO) announced there has not been any new cases in the last three years in Nigeria and that there is only two endemic nations left with the deadly disease taking over, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Some countries still have outbreaks but it’s easier to contain and take care of them. For every dollar raised Rotary International will be matching it, and the Bill Gates Foundation will be matching the Rotary’s around the world.

There were Rotary members killed while

in Pakistan doing Polio vaccinations. The children’s parents had thought that the people were trying to harm them. In 2013, 20 polio vaccinators and nine police officers assigned to guard them were killed in Pakistan. With that memory fresh in their minds, a team from a Rotary-supported polio resource center went to the village to promote acceptance of the vaccine. They expected an uphill, potentially life-threat-

ening battle. to get vaccinated. The grand total for all It took the team a month just to persuade three schools was $1,125.25 which will village elders and religious leaders to meet vaccinate 4501 children. with them. But their persistence paid off.

Even the teachers of J.R. Robson school took part in the Rotary Club’s Purple Pinkie Day held on March 14. The club visited each of the three schools in Vermilion to help raise money for the eradication of Poliomyelitis (Polio), a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to paralysis, breathing problems, and in some cases, even death. Local News Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Torch Winning Bid Goes To Vermilion Residents

At the Vermilion Lakeland College on March 10 at 2 p.m. the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch, which was up for auction, was handed off from Peter Walsh, President of the Lakeland Rowing Club to the winning bidders. Vermilion residents, Rex and Joyce Cunningham had the top bid of $2000 and purchased the torch to help out the Lakeland Rowing Club. Mr. Cunningham used to row with the club and since retiring from it has had a boat named in honour of him, T-Rex. Walsh would like to thank The Voice and The Standard for their generous, continuing support and media coverage of the auction. Residents Rally In Front Of Starke’s Office

Despite the crisp cool morning many local residents joined in a lunch time rally, which began at 10 a.m. and was advocated by Steve Avramovic, a member of the Health Science Association of Alberta, in front of MLA Richard Starke’s office on Sat. March 15 stating “Let’s Talk” trying to get the message across to the Redford government that they need to stop attacking the pensions that the public-sector workers have paid for. The music was as loud as the chants of residents. Making noise and walking the streets to justify that it is their money and they are not just going to sit back and allow this to happen. “Retire Redford” was another loud and clear message stated by the residents. Local News Seventh Vermilion Region Partnership Breakfast Leaves Many In Stitches Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Vermilion Region Partnership Breakfast saw attendees rolling with laughter as guest speaker Kevin Burns, gave his ten leadership strategies and delivered them with an entertaining and humourus twist.

Burns told his story about how he continues to inspires others to become engaged in their workplace, both as employers and employees, which included tales from his career as a professional mascot.

He stated that retaining employees takes leadership and employees need to feel they have a relationship with their employer. They need to feel engaged and connected with their job and co-workers.

Burns said following these guidelines will help employees feel content with their positions.

Keeping negative employees or having a negative employer can rub off on others, leading to an unhappy work environment.

Maintaining a positive attitude can draw others to your environment making for a better atmosphere.

“Happiness is not a result, it’s a choice,” said Burns.

Approximately 120 people attended the seventh Vermilion Regional Partnership Breakfast, an alliance formed in 2011 between the Town of Vermilion, County of Vermilion River, Alberta Works, Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce,

Community Futures Lloydminster and Region, Lakeland College and Vermilion Rotary Club.

The Partnership’s breakfast concept was initiated to help businesses obtain a variety of related information, assistance for employers for attracting and retaining employees, opportunities to develop a business network, and collaborate and share different business practices.

The partnership has also initiated the Vermilion Regional Ambassador program which recognizes individuals for their work within the community. Honoured at the partnership on March 13 for their

The Vermilion UFA Farm and Ranch Supply store was named the 2012 Agri Business of the Year at the Partnership Breakfast. Accepting on behalf of the Vermilion UFA are Store Manager Jack Rehill, and Customer Services and Sales Manager, Randy Barlow. Presenting the award was County Reeve Daryl Watt, accompanied by Deputy Reeve Ed Parke and Councillors Dave Gamracy and Murray King.

community commitment were community members Lori Evans and Program Coordinator for VIBE, Pat Calynuk. Guest speaker Kevin Burns, was awarded an honourary ambassadorship.

Recipient Lori Evans, has served as the Ukrainian Dancing President for a number of years and also volunteered with various community and school functions. She said she was very shocked when she heard of her nomination. “I am very thankful for the recognition but that is not why I do it.”

The County of Vermilion River also handed out a couple of awards that morning. In attendance to make the presentations were County of Vermilion River Reeve Daryl Watt along with Deputy Reeve Ed Parke, Division 4 Councillor Dave Gamracy, and Division 1 Councillor Murray King.

The 2012 award for the Agri Producer of the Year was presented to the McGrath family consisting of Fred and Anne McGrath, along with their son Sean, and his wife Tanya, and their children Billy, Destinee and Denae.

Sean is the fifth generation of McGraths to operate the family cattle ranch which is located south east of Vermilion.

The award for 2012 Agri Business of the year went to the Vermilion UFA Farm and Ranch Supply. In attendance to accept on behalf of Vermilion UFA was Store Manager Jack Rehill and Customer Services and Sales Manager, Randy Barlow.

A delicious meal, informative session and lots of laughs were had by all who attended the Partnership Breakfast as they headed out the doors of the Vermilion Regional Centre and off to their jobs.

2014 Spring Art Show And Sale Angelle Lemire Reporter

The Vermilion Community Art Club will be holding their Fourth Annual Spring Art Show and Sale on April 11 and 12 at the Vermilion Regional Center which will showcase local talent and the work of visiting artists.

This is the Art Club’s largest project. The non-profit organization that supports and encourages all forms of art in the Vermilion area will have over 30 artists’ work for sale and on display for both days.

On Fri. April 11 there will be a “Meet the Artist” Wine and Cheese from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with live entertainment by a local artist from Marshall, Justin Walker.

April 12 the show will continue from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with free admission for both days.

Bev Buchanan, a club member who paints with watercolour and oils, will be the featured artist this year.

The show will also feature a new addition, an area for discounted art works.

The Vermilion Art Club has reached out to the community this year by offering Introductory Oil Painting and Introductory Pencil Sketching as well as running a Self Portrait class by Monica To. Everyone is welcome to come down and check out the show or purchase the featured pieces as well as support local artists and be part of this community event.

Lakeland College Team Wins Alberta Business Case Competition Kelly Sidoryk, Lakeland College Submitted

It was a $4,000 history-making first place for five Lakeland College business students who captured the 2014 Alberta Deans of Business college case competition.

C a llie L a r so n, Th o ma s H u s sey, Susan Derroch, Nick Gulak and associate Kirsten Wilkinson accomplished Lakeland’s first victory in nine years of competition. Other Lakeland College teams have come close—placing second and third.

“This team really put in the extra effort and it paid off,” says. Brad Onofrychuck, team facilitator who is also an instructor

and chair of the business department.

Competition is intense as 12 teams of students from across the province are presented with a business problem, and then have10 hours to come up with an analysis, solution and presentation. The next day they make a 12 minute presentation followed by a five minute question and answer period with industry specialists. The presentations are judged on key issues, solutions, defending proposal and overall presentation.

Lakeland’s team made the best case for 2014’s competition business, Yanjing, a Chinese rice beer, now also brewed in Canada. Company founder Shu Guo was one of the judges and also made the cheque presentation to the winning

Lakeland team.

“She spoke very favorably of the team on both strategy and presentation,” says Onofrychuk.

The competition is a way to broaden the students’ classroom learning in an authentic, real-world way.

First place wins $4,000, second gets $2,500 and third place is worth $1,500.

The money goes directly to the students.

Robson Student Enjoy Day Of Fishing The senior girls’ basketball team is on a role! The girls beat Paradise Valley in an exhibition game on Monday March 10 by a score of 71-50. The team is headed to Elk Point to play in the zone tournament on March 14 - 15. Good luck girls.

The junior boys’ basketball tournament that took place on Tuesday March 4 in Paradise Valley was a nail bitter. The boys played hard but lost to Marwayne then turned around and beat Mannville 38-13, finished fifth.

The Grade 8 and 9 classes enjoyed an awesome day ice fishing on Tuesday, March 11. After completing Outdoor Ed, the students got to put their skills to the test out on Laurier Lake with the

ice fishing rods they made in class. They Grade 9 class also got to participate since their trip last year was cancelled due to the weather. And what a beautiful day it was. Students really enjoyed fishing and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire. Squeals could be heard from not only the girls as they caught their first fish but some of the boys as well! For some students it seemed like every time they put their hook in the water, they pulled a fish out. Prizes were given for the smallest and largest fish caught. A huge thanks to Mr. Campbell for organizing a great day and the parent volunteers for making it possible.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted Healthy Choices Made At VES On March 6 and 7, BTPS teachers went to Edmonton for the Central East Alberta’s Teachers’ Convention. There was an opening keynote speaker on Thursday, and then the rest of Thursday and Friday had many sessions to choose from including curriculum information, assessment, reading strategies, ATA information, and a variety of others topics.

In the year following an election, the Board of Trustees conduct school tours to allow new board members to familiarize themselves with all of the school facili-

ties and allow veteran board members to revisit schools to see any updates and to determine any necessary updates that may be required. On the morning of March 11 it was great to have the BTPS Board spend about 75 minutes touring VES and talking with staff and students.

We have been tracking our healthy choices for seven weeks in the 60 Minute Kids’ Club Challenge. There is just one week left to track your active living in this challenge. If you have not yet registered, it is not too late. Join the students at VES and get healthy. We are currently in sixth place in Alberta out of 38 participating schools and 29 out of 138 in all of Canada.

Way to be healthy VES.

Games Club has been a huge success and will continue in March. Tuesdays and Thursdays during the lunch time recess our Grade 6 VIBE Advisory members assist staff in running games club. It offers students the opportunity to practice important everyday friendship and social skills. A big thank you goes out to the VIBE advisory members for volunteering their time.

Hopefully all parents who have children in K-3 had the opportunity to take part in a survey with regards to our outcomesbased report cards. The purpose of this survey is to help us understand where we

need to spend more time supporting our parents in understanding the new reporting system. We hope that you found this a valuable way to share your thoughts.

St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

O n Friday, M arch 14 students from St. Jerome’s participated in “Purple-Pinky Day”. Vermilion Rotarian members were set up in the front foyer that morning to dye students and staff pinky-fingers purple. The “Purple-Pinky” campaign is to eradicate polio throughout the world. $1 can vaccinate four children. In total St. Jerome’s raised $525.25 making it possible for 2,101 children to be giving the polio vaccination. Way to go St. Jerome’s!

Everyone was looking very comfy on Tuesday, March 4 as students and staff participated in Pajama Day. As well as getting to spend our day in our PJs we were all treated to a pancakes, as it was Shrove Tuesday. Thank you to the Student Council members, Father Roger, and the Knights of Columbus members for making us a wonderful warm breakfast. On March 5 we gathered as a school community in the gym to celebrate the beginning of

Lent with an Ash Wednesday Liturgy. After listening to the Word of God and to Father Roger’s message, ashes were disturbed to all.

Elementary students have been very busy working on memorizing poems and reciting them as they prepare for Declamation. Every student from Grade 1 to 5 had to choose a poem, memorize it and then recite it in front of his or her classmates. Teachers choose their top students to perform at the Declamation Parent Night which will be held on Tuesday, March 18 in the school gym starting at 7 p.m.

Basketball season is coming to an end and the senior teams having been preparing for zones which were held this past weekend. The senior boys hosted zones and the senior girls traveled to Glendon.

If either team wins zones they will advance to Provincials this week. The junior boys finished their season this weekend when they faced Kitscoty for the Highway 16 Championships on March 12. The boys came out strong and battled back and forth through four quarters. When the final whistle sounded the Spartans were four

points short of a victory. Mr. Whelan was very proud of his team for the determination, skill, and sportsmanship they have demonstrated throughout the season.

With basketball ending, badminton practice has begun. There will be many tournaments throughout April for junior and senior high students to participate in.
