New Life On Many Area Cattle Farms

Many area cattle farmers have lost numerous hours of sleep recently with the annual calving season well under way. The more temperate weather is a welcome relief for them as they have been forced to frequently check pens, hourly in some cases, looking for signs of cows calving. The Once Owns The Stage At The Vermilion Legion Angelle Lemire Reporter Doors opened to the public at the Vermilion Royal Canadian Legion on March 2 for a potluck dinner that started at 5:30 p.m.

The chairs were filled, wine was poured and the lights were set for the soulful folk band ‘The Once’ to take the stage at 7 p.m.

Attendees were in for a special treat.

The acapella sounds filled the air as the whole crowd sang along to the tunes.

“The Once” beautifully covered songs

by Elvis, Queen, and Leonard Cohen giving

them a Newfoundland twist. They also sang one of their newly produced songs ‘We Are All Running’ which is one of the six tunes they already have recorded in studio for their upcoming record. The release date is unknown.

Each member is from a different part of Newfoundland and they first sang together back in 2006 in theater where they first rooted into music and it gave them the desire to perform and share their heritage sounds with others.

They recorded their first album as a group in 2009 and play a variety of instruments including acoustic guitar, hand drum with a brush stick, different mandolins for

different sounds, tambourine and banjo.

It was a show enjoyed by all ages and They will be touring Western Canada once again the Vermilion Folk Club made and the United Kingdom over the next another awesome choice by bringing in the while and plan on making it to the United soloist sounds of “The Once.”

Vermilion Rotary Club Hosted This Bonspiel

Vermilion Rotarians Eugene Wasylik, Dean McMullen, John Lunty and Barry Gordey headed to Spruce Grove to defend their B Event championship they won in Stettler at the 2013 Rotary Curling Championship Bonspiel. The bonspiel includes teams from the Rotary clubs in Districts 2360 and 2370. These districts cover all of Alberta, western Saskatchewan and north-eastern British Columbia.

RCMP

RCMP Reports

Kitscoty Injury Accident Hwy 16-RR 32 On March 7 at approximately 3:45 a.m.

Kitscoty RCMP were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision on Highway 16 at approximately RR 32. On arrival Police observed two vehicles in the eastbound lanes. A black Ford pickup had rear ended a smaller car causing significant damage.

The occupants of both vehicles were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Alcohol is believed to be a factor and charges are yet to be determined.

Portions of Highway 16 experienced lane restrictions to allow for investigation and for clean up purposes.

Attempted Home Robbery In Mundare, Alberta In the afternoon of Tuesday, March 4, 2014, Vegreville RCMP were called to a residence on 51 avenue in Mundare, Alberta for a report of two masked men entering the home and demanding money. The homeowner, a 78 year old man, was home alone at the time that the suspects came to the door and knocked. The victim answered the door and the two males forced their way past him. Once inside they demanded money and were told there wasn’t any to give. They then began to rummage through the home but left empty-handed shortly after entering.

The suspects are described as skinny males in dark clothing, wearing hoods and masks over their faces. The taller of the pair is believed to be approximately 5’10” and was wearing a green, red and white mask over his face. The other was shorter at approximately 5’8” and was also wearing a mask. No weapons were seen or used, but

the victim was pushed to the floor when he tried to push the suspects out of the house.

RCMP urge all citizens to keep personal safety and security their top priority. Keep the doors to your home locked at all times, and look out a window before opening your door.

RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying these suspects. If you’ve seen anybody matching this description in the area of 50 street and 51 avenue in Mundare around 3:30pm on Tuesday March 4, 2014 please call Vegreville RCMP at 780-6322223 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Young Offender Caught, Ending Crime Spree - Mundare, Alberta Area Shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 Vegreville RCMP were called to Mundare, Alberta by a resident who nearly had his truck stolen. The vehicle owner left his truck unlocked and running while he went back in his house near 52 avenue and 52 street to grab his ciga-

rettes. When he came back out he could hear his truck revving loudly, tires spinning and gears shifting but the truck only moving a few feet. The owner approached the truck to see a 17 year old male from Mundare attempting to drive the truck.

The youth appeared to be high on drugs and unable to operate the truck properly.

As the owner tried to pull the youth out of the truck the youth yelled to let go or he would stab the owner. The owner pulled the youth out who walked away from the scene.

Moments later a second call was received from a 74 year old female living near 53 avenue and 52 street in Mundare who stated she woke up to see a male rummaging through the items in her house.

Wh e n sh e s cre a m e d, th e su sp e c t grabbed the victim’s cell phone and purse and ran out of the home.

Police Dog Services was called in to assist in the search for the suspect while other officers patrolled the area. A male matching the description given in the attempted robbery of the truck was seen walking westbound on 53 avenue and when officers approached him, he ran. The suspect ran south through numerous yards to try and evade police but was caught by the two officers who outran him on 51 avenue. The 17 yearo l d m a l e wa s i d e ntified and confirmed to be the suspect in the earlier attempted robber y of the truck. A search of the male’s pockets upon arrest revealed property taken from the elderly lady’s home, a knife, a small amount of methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia. The youth admitted to using methamphetamine only two hours earlier that morning and was displaying symptoms of drug impairment.

At the time of his a r re s t th e yo u th h a d 3 different outstanding arrest warrants for other break and enters as well as vehicle thefts in the Mundare area. The youth was also on probation for a previous break and enter and possessing stolen property in Camrose, Alberta in 2012.

The youth was known by both Victims.

An attempted robbery fro m a n el d erly ma l e in his house occurred the previous afternoon in Mundare, but it is unknown at this time if this youth had involvement in that matter.

That Robbery is still under investigation.

The youth remains in custody and is facing 23 charges. He makes his first appearance in Vegreville Youth Court later in March 2014. The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. RCMP urge all citizens to keep personal safety and security their top priority. This matter shows that drugs and crime is present, even in small town Alberta.

Why Agriculture?

With the price of grain continually sliding downward coupled with the unavailable grain rail cars it seems hard times have fallen on grain farmers across the country. However, cattle farmers seem to have higher hopes than normal as the prices for their animals continue to climb, far past the feeder cattle fall-run. This seems to have sparked optimism among producers of finally breaking even from previous drought years and the Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) crisis that started in 2003 and hit cattle farmers hard.

It seems as though the price of replacement breeding stock has also steadily increased seeing farmers paying more for bred cows and heifers than in recent years.

The downward spiral of cattle produc-

ers getting out of the industry seems to be outweighed by the number of farmers getting back into it. It can also possibly be attributed to the number of head of cattle owned by each of the producers. Many farmers are now just starting to increase their herds from the dwindled numbers from previous years.

Although the mountains of bookkeeping that is required in order to raise cattle in today’s market are at times overwhelming, it seems farmers are now turning back to cattle ranching. Maybe it is to make better use of the grain sitting in bins, un-sellable in the current grain market.

It seems to have been a long standing tradition that if the cattle prices are good, the grain prices are in the toilet. If you are not a mixed farmer in today’s agricultural industry, you will most likely have an offfarm job to subsidize the whole operation.

The rise in fuel and fertilizer prices in the past ten or so years has not been matched by the price of grain and cattle.

There is no parallel rise between expenses and income from years back.

In the mid to late 70’s a farmer could buy a pick-up truck for approximately the price of eight to ten yearling steers. That same truck today would cost much more than those same yearling animals.

How are farmers supposed to keep up with the rising cost of expenses when their income has stayed the same as 20 30 years ago?

The cost and availability of government CCIA tags is now weighing heavy on farmers’ minds. There have been rumours that the tags will be harder to purchase as many vendors do not want the headache of filing the paperwork related to the sale of the tags. How do you think the farmers feel as they have even more paperwork then the vendors?

Many farm wives have been forced to become extreme record keepers to stay up to date with the industry demands.

Congratulations to the Voice on your 500th Issue. The Vermilion Voice has endured. As a local business owner for 40 + years, I have often wondered, why would some local persons and some businesses, actively detract the existence of a local business. Surely, they are not against business, per say, within Vermilion. Of course, if one was to believe their own rhetoric, they surely would not be against a locally owned business. And lastly, as business owners themselves, they could not possibly be against the lowered cost of advertising brought to Vermil-

ion and area by the very existence of the Voice. I, for one remember the high cost of newspaper advertising, prior to the Voice? The time proven mechanism, competition, brought forth only by the Voice, is the main reason some businesses in Vermilion have been able to afford the absolute cost effectiveness of advertising for the past almost 10 years. And as I peruse the Voice, I notice, lately, an improved resurgence of “local” news. That is great. I also notice, with some dismay, businesses from outside the Vermilion area that realize the wealth of perspective customers within this area and while

their local competitors still balk at “shopping locally”, the outsiders have jumped on the bandwagon and are taking full advantage of the advertising rates in Vermilion, but at the same time, are, steering Vermilion customers away.

Congratulations, once again are due to the The Vermilion Voice and keep up the good work.

These are just some of the issues facing the cattle industry. There is a whole different set of rules that apply for the grain industry.

Agricultural is the only industry whose product price is dictated to the producer.

When you sell a pail of oil in the store you, as the proprietor, set the price. Farmers grow the product and then are told how much it will be worth.

For an industry that is responsible for helping feed the people of the world, it seems a bit odd that farmers can barely make a living.

As my husband disturbs my sleep with noise as he dresses in heavy clothes to go check the cows during this year’s calving season, I have to wonder if anyone else cares if that one little calf lives or dies.

At this time The Voice would like to salute the hard work of our Vermilion and area farmers.

March is still roaring like a lion, patiently waiting for the little lamb, got to get outdoors and venture somewhere…anywhere. Hopefully the snow will go away a little and make access to the wilderness a possibility.

I have been watching that bachelor group of mule deer with great interest. As I mentioned last week they were all still carrying their crowns of antlers, late for the winter.

There have been winters that were not as harsh and the deer dropped their

antlers in December and early January.

Usually it’s the bigger bucks that drop first due to stress of the late breeding season or rut.

The bachelor group I have been watching were of several different age groups and one had single spike antlers and two others had “fork” or three point antlers on either side. However, the two that attracted most of my interest are two bigger adult and full grown bucks with decent or big antlers. Just yesterday I saw them in late afternoon just lying around in a bald snow bound field. All five of them were there and I was amazed to see the three smaller bucks have finally dropped their antlers but the big two still proudly

showed off their majestic antlers.

I had thoughts of running across the field and make them bounce around a bit to rattle the antlers loose, but reality and common sense took over and I will just have to wait and watch.

Not only is antler shed hunting great exercise and a cure for “cabin fever” in late winter, next to snowshoeing, as long as nobody is watching the embarrassing antics. It is exciting and a great way to enjoy the outdoors, it is like when you were a youngster on an Easter egg hunt and finding the best treasure of the bunch.

It is just a challenge and unexplainable fun.

It is fun and exciting to find any shed antler, but to find a specific full set of a buck you know is very gratifying, more so if it’s a huge buck by anybody’s standards.

I have had that pleasure several times but it is nowhere as easy as it sounds. Unique and unmistakeable antler sheds of specific bucks have been found 20 miles from where the buck wintered for months.

Odds are against you with great success when looking for a specific set of dropped antlers. Many times I have found one side and spent weeks or even months trying to find the other side with no luck. Chances are someone came along and took a liking to your treasure on purpose or just by coincidence. It may be also likely that the buck carried the one side a great distance from the other before shedding that side.

Also, critters like to sabotage your efforts. I have seen coyotes in the wilderness carrying an antler like it’s their favourite play toy. They like to chew on them, and as I also found they bury them to play or chew on later.

Rodents like rabbits, mice, squirrels,

gophers and porcupine to mention a few, also love to gnaw on shed antlers not only to keep the teeth nice and clean but the antlers are a rich source of calcium and minerals.

Found antler sheds can be a money maker for some as it is legal to sell legally found antler sheds to collectors, some just for weight and used for making lamps, coat racks, dog chew toys and other attractive products. Some antlers that are huge can have a great collector value and bring in a handsome reward into the thousands of dollars for a good set, as with record book size deer and elk.

Legally found antler sheds are sheds found on your property or where you have permission to do so by landowners. Many do not know that antler sheds are not legal to remove from provincial or federal wildlife areas or parks.

Also, antlers with skull attached, as with a deer that succumb to a harsh winter, are not considered an antler shed and is illegal to remove from anywhere unless you have a permit from Fish and Wildlife.

I will keep you informed on my mission to find at least one full set of those two mule bucks I am watching, and soon I will be venturing the fields and trails.

Whatever your reason, it is time to get out there and embrace a little fresh air, the great outdoors and any adventures to shake off the winter cob webs.

When I journeyed up to Edmonton to the Spring Sportsman Show, I really had no idea then of flying up to a remote fishing camp and spending five days completely cut off from any link to civilization.

Seems I’m the kind of guy who might just do that kind of impetuous thing.

Anyone who’s ever taken in one of those shows will have seen all the weird and wonderful trips available.

All it takes is money!! The price was based on a party of five at $475.00 each for five days on a beautiful fly in lake that is in the farthest north east corner of Alberta. In fact a goodly piece of the lake is in the Northwest Territories. The folks told me my two boys could travel for the price of one adult. I signed up on the spot.

All I needed were three other guys that harbored the same yearning for an airplane ride and a chance to fish a pristine northern lake. Well, when I got home I phoned my friend Bill McGrath my brother in-law Trevor Clark, my nephew Brian Wolters and of course my sons couldn’t believe their ears to learn they would b e included. The date was set for the end of June and into July a bit. I got the OK from the boy’s school letting them miss the last week of school. They liked that even better.

This lodging was a bare bones tent

camp, with bunk beds and an open fire to cook on. There were to be two boats and motors and no guide. We were on our own. I cautioned everyone to get their teeth checked as a tooth ache was not advisable in a remote camp. I gave a lec ture on the idea that we were to be isolated fo r 5 d ay s . T h e re wa s n o way to communicate. I made a check list and star ted a pile of gear in the living room floor, trying to make sure we’d arrive up there with all the essentials.

The pile was revised almost daily. It wasn’t something you did every day.

The butterflies had taken on giant proportions by the time we’d loaded two trucks and headed for Gregoire Lake just south of Fort McMurray.

This was where our Twin Otter on floats was waiting to load our gear.

Looked like about a hay rack load that had to be put on a trolley to push down the dock where the plane floated.

Li ke a m i ra cl e i t a l l d i s a p p e a re d into that plane and the pilot even commented “Is that all you have?” He said “Where’s your booze?” We had a time to convince him we didn’t plan on anything but fishing. Trevor did smuggle on board a bottle of whiskey in case we had a snake bite. There are No snakes in that country as far as I know. The “Twin Otter” is a wonderful plane for pontoon work and even with the load we carried we took off and headed north across Lake Athabasca and the wonderful sand dunes that were white as snow. Hard to believe!

First time I’d ever been in such a countr y. Our camp was on the edge of a moss pocket that was soft and springy and under the moss frozen solid. We put that to good use to preserve our catch! The boys immediately on hitting shore, got out of their outfits and standing on the little dock by the camp soon had several pike to hand and we had fresh fish for our first meal. It was hard to believe that it never really got dark. You could have read a book without a light. We could have fished

day around. We were played with big horse flies that bit a nice chunk out of you to get your attention and little storm clouds would give you no notice to commence giving you a soak. We wore rain gear at all times. It took a few times to master cooking on a open fire but we did manage. We decided to keep only fish that were eight pounds or over, imagine! All we kept were lake trout. The pike we caught were used for camp meat. Right on time our Twin Otter approached and it sure was a welcome sight. It wouldn’t have been nice if they’d forgotten where they left us. The drive home was a cake walk, and I’m sure we were glad to be there too.

Among the pages and pages of proposed legislation cued for review by the 41st Parliament of the Government of Canada is Bill C-559, short name The Reform Act. If passed, the Bill could affect a significant change to the way our government functions.

Conservative MP Michael Chong introduced his private member’s Bill in December, 2013. Since then, it’s attracted both strong support and vehement opposes.

Important issues seem to have that kind of a draw. Everyone pays more attention to a game when the stakes appear high.

Our elected Members of Parliament stand to gain plenty if the Bill passes. The Bill seeks to restore caucus to a position of real power in the House of Commons.

This power includes the right to initiate a review of party leadership should members deem such action necessary. If provisions of The Reform Act are encoded into law, MPs will be enabled to more truly represent the constituents who voted them into their positions in the first place. Bill C-559 allows MPs to act with a strong voice in the House, an independent

voice, un-whipped by their party leader or the unelected, unseen enforcers often perceived as herding MPs and ensuring their adherence to a script dictated from the PMO. Our Parliament is supposed to work in this manner. Responsible government is the foundation of our system of parliamentary democracy, the Westminster model, which prescribes that the executive branch of government (the PMO) is accountable to the legislative branch (our elected MPs who sit in the House), not the other way around. The original concept of ‘responsible government’ in Canada is credited to two lawyers, Robert Baldwin of Toronto, and Louis LaFontaine of Montreal, who first introduced it in 1841 when the two sought to form a democratic alliance between French and English populations a in pre-confederate Canada.

ciples of responsible government have become so eroded that MPs, instead of providing unfettered representation of their electorate, are expected to align themselves with the goals of their political party, risking admonition or other unspecified political diminishment in the event they speak or act outside of the party line. What role does that leave for us, the electorate, within our own government? It leaves us in the role of outsiders looking in, like hungry strangers uninvited to an elaborate banquet, the invoice for which we will be forced to bear despite the fact that we weren’t offered even a crumb from the table.

While we celebrate the good fortune of having been born in North America where such lofty words as freedom, liberty, and democracy are uttered with unwavering confidence, it is wise that we should pause from time to time to consider their meaning and value. Each one of us ought to make an effort to inform ourselves about how our government works, how decisions are made, and by whom. If we want our representatives to look out for our best interests, then we ought to support changes that allow them to more efficiently do the jobs we ask them to do on our behalf. We ought to at least read The Reform Act so that we know what it says.

Complacency is fertile ground for those who would seek to undermine the tenets of a responsible working government. It is imperative that we remain vigilant in ensuring the integrity of our democracy and those who wield the power within its parameters. We can do our part. We can care enough to participate.

Allied Arts Will Be Feelin’ Groovy Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Jim Witter will be bringing the songs of the 70’s to the Vermilion Allied Arts stage at Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall on March 15.

Witter’s versatile musical styles will definitely have something for every music fan. Whether it’s country, contemporary Christian or music from Billy Joel and Elton John, Witter has a way of appealing to every listener.

Witter’s music career began at a tender age in his living room where he, with the help of his mother’s piano playing, would sing the songs from another era which included tunes from the Beetles and various Broadway musicals.

He said his parents always encouraged him to follow his dream of becoming a professional musician and adds, he never really thought of doing anything else.

Witter played at a number of bars and clubs in Southern Ontario for many years, paying his music dues and in 1985, met his wife Rebecca, and from then on the two worked to promote Witter’s career in the music industry.

His big break came in 1990 when one of Witters demo tapes fell into the hands of a Sony Music Canada executive. A record deal was signed and before long, Witters was on his way to Nashville and star status.

Witter’s recordings have earned him a

number of nominations awards from the Canadian Country Music Association, Juno Awards, and most recently the Dove Awards in Nashville, where Witter’s album “Forgiveness” was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year.

Witter, along with his wife and four children still live in Southern Ontario and after his appearance in Vermilion, he will be criss-crossing throughout the States on his “Piano Men” and “Feelin’ Groovy” retro-music style tour.

New Varieties of Plants (UPOV 91). The Bill will also for the first time in Canadian law codify the explicit privilege of farmers to save their seed.

As the Canadian Federal of Agriculture pointed out recently: “the government has taken steps to better align the Plant Breeders Rights Act with UPOV ‘91 by striking a good balance between ensuring variety developers have the ability to see a return on investment for their plant breeding research efforts while also preserving the right for farmers to save and condition seed for their own use.

The CFA anticipates that Canadian farmers will benefit greatly from increased innovation and an increase in new crop varieties as a result of these changes.”

Background Since 1991, Canada has been a member of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. The Union is commonly known by its French acronym “UPOV.” The mission of this organization is to provide and promote an effective system of intellectual property protection specifically for plant varieties, with the aim of encouraging plant breeders to develop new varieties of plants for the benefit of society.

Canada’s present Plant Breeders’ Rights Act is based on the 1978 UPOV Convention (UPOV 78). Changes to the UPOV Convention in 1991 were intended to respond to advances in modern plant breeding tech-

niques, provide clarification on exceptions to the breeder’s right, and strengthen the rights of breeders by enabling opportunities to better enforce their rights. Canada has not yet ratified UPOV 91.

There are currently 71 members of UPOV. The majority of member countries – including all of Canada’s major trading partners and almost all other developed nations – have ratified UPOV 91 by amending their laws to conform to its provisions.

Since 1998, when the 1991 Convention came into force, UPOV 91 has been the standard to which the legislation of countries wishing to become members must conform.

Canada’s membership in UPOV gives Canadian plant breeders the ability to protect their varieties in other member countries and gives Canadian producers improved access to protected foreign varieties. As with other forms of intellectual property protection, a grant of plant breeders’ rights is only valid in Canada.

To obtain protection in other countries, the applicant must apply separately to the appropriate authority.

Membership in UPOV also allows Canada to fulfill its World Trade Organization’s (WTO), Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) WTO obligations, by providing for an effective form of plant variety protection.

There are many reasons why the Alberta cow herd has decreased in size in over the last 10 years. One factor is that many older producers who were counting their cow herd as their retirement plan have now retired and they have sent the cows to town.

“Economic pressures since BSE have resulted in many producers selling their herd and breaking-up pasture and hay land to grow annual crops to improve their on-farm cash flow,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Some producers are working off farm, either part-time or full-time, to support their operations and are not around enough to manage a cow herd. In other cases, difficulties with hiring labour to work on the cattle operation have either resulted in some herds reducing numbers or being sold off completely.”

No matter what the reason, the size of the Alberta (and Canadian) cow herd is smaller than what it was 10 to 15 years ago. Alberta’s cow numbers peaked in 2005 at 2,187,000 cows found on 28,718 farms and ranches. In 2006, the Agricultural census reported that cow numbers in Alberta dropped to 2,032,018 on 25,479 farms and ranches. By 2011, the number of cows had dropped to 1,558,700 cows found on 18,944 farms and ranches. This is a 23.3 per cent decline in the number

of cows in the province and a 25.6 per cent reduction in the number of producers who had cattle on their farms. Interestingly enough, over the 11 years in question, the average number of cows in a herd increased from 68 to 82 cows.

“The municipalities that saw the largest drop in cow numbers and producers were in the Black soil zones of the province,” says Yaremcio. “In the Black soil zones, north of Calgary to Edmonton and east of Edmonton to the Saskatchewan border, we saw cow numbers drop from 711,834 to 444,657, or 37.5 per cent, from 2001 to 2011 and the number of producers who indicated that their primary source of income from the beef operation dropped from 10,254 to 6338, or 38.2 per cent.

During this period, the average cow herd size in these regions stayed stable at 70 cows.”

In the Peace River District of the province, in the Dark Grey soil zone, cow numbers dropped from 187,722 in 2006 to 129,050 in 2011, a reduction of 36 per cent, and the number of producers from 2,643 in 2006 to 1,896 in 2011 for a drop of 28.3 per cent. The average herd size dropped from 71 cows to 63 cows.

The Brown Soil zone saw an increase in cow numbers from 310,623 head in 2001 to 360,714 in 2011 for an increase of 16.1 per cent, and the herd size grew from an average 83 cows to 134.

However; the number of producers dropped 20.4 per cent; from 3,748 to 2,697.

Grain prices have come down and grain movement is slow, and these factors will narrow the income differential between grain and cattle. Even though beef prices are the strongest in recent history, heifer retention as reported by Statistics Canada is slow to happen and the Alberta and Canadian herd has not gone through a rebuilding so far. With the wide price differential between steers and heifers, this might be the trigger needed to see herd expansion. The July 1 cattle inventory numbers should give us a better picture of what is happening.”

Pancake Supper Held For The Beginning Of Lent

On March 4 a pancake supper was held at Faith Lutheran Church. It is an annual feast day which takes place the day before the beginning of Lent. It is officially called Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes and ice cream, as well as beverages, were served (free will) to residents who came in for a warm meal. They served close to 80 people. Photos Angelle Lemire

Annual Celebration For Shove Tuesday

St. Saviour Anglican Church held a pancake supper on March 4. It is an annual event that takes place the day before the Lent season begins, also known as the day before Ash Wednesday. It is officially known as Shrove Tuesday. Residents were welcome to come in and have some pancakes, sausages and beverages for $8. The church had between 150 to 200 people stop in for the dinner.

Purple Pinkie Day Rotary Club of Vermilion Press Release

On Friday, March 14, 2014 the Rotary Club of Vermilion promoting the Rotary International goal of eliminating Polio by partnering with the schools in Vermilion and Mannville on a project for students to enter in to a worldwide, world changing initiative. For every $1 donation Rotary is able to use matching grants to purchase enough vaccine to immunize 4 children in third world countries to prevent the spread of Polio in the three countries where it still exists; Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

In 1985, Rotary International began raising funds in an effort to eliminate Polio worldwide. Polio has not been a problem in Canada for many years, but this is not the case in many developing countries. By partnering with the World Health Organization and other government and private groups, Rotary International has achieved a 99 percent reduction of Polio worldwide.

Our local Vermilion Rotary Club has been participating in this effort from the beginning. Presently, through the Purple Pinkie Project, we wish to make the students of Vermilion schools part of the solution

WSP Donates To County Councillor’s Chosen Organizations

WPS, formerly known as Genivar, is an engineering consulting firm for municipalities who recently made presentations to the Islay Assisted Living facility and the Buffalo Coulee Community Club. The presentation came about from County of Vermilion River Councillor Stacey Hryciuk’s business card she entered in a draw last fall at the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties conference. WSP offered to donate $1,000 to the draw winner’s charity of choice. Councillor Hryciuk said it was a hard decision but wanted to donate the prize money to organizations that included both young and older members of society.

That was the reason for the split on funds. Each recipient was awarded $500 at a presentation made at the Islay Assisted Living facility on March 3. Stingrays Sting Their Competition Border City Stingrays Submitted The club had a late start to the season as the Lloydminster Leisure Center had their annual shut down until the middle of October. Coaches and athletes worked hard to catch up on lost time once the pool opened by holding a few extra technical camps during irregular swim hours. The Border City Stingray synchronized swimming team practices three times a week as well as mandatory yoga and cross training sessions. The Stingrays practice at the Lloyd pool and the Vermilion pool (occasionally). We love the vermilion pool! The people are nice and the facility is awesome.

Some of the club’s goals this season were to increase our competitive placements and technical scores.

The Border City Stingrays have had an excellent start to their season. Our first competition was held in Saskatoon on

Jan. 25 and 26. Most of our competitive members attended the meet. This meet was a great start to our season because all of our members had top three finishes. Our youngest competitor, Kaibrie Lumbard, walked away with one first place and two second placed finishes. Our novice team had an excellent first meet with a second place finish in their routine. The 13-15 team placed third in their routine and had personal bests in their figures. Kassidy Yockey placed second in her figures and sixth in her routine. Avery Plandowski placed second in her routine, and our veteran competitor Peyton Turcotte placed second in her figures. Congratulations to the coaches and athletes on such a great first meet. Your hard work and determination has already paid off.

The rest of the competitive girls will continue practicing and setting new goals for the club’s next competition which will be Provincials held in Regina April 11, 12 and 13.

Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast

The annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held last Tuesday, March 4 at the Vermilion Regional Centre with numerous town and county leaders in attendance.

The early morning meeting started with Parkview Alliance Church Reverand Bryce Ashlin-Mayo who led the group of Vermilion’s numerous church denomination delegates as they addressed council members and prayed for their guidance in leading the communities they govern.

Vermilion Junior Super League Curling Wrap-Up Joanne McCrae Submitted

Monday, March 3 saw parents on the edge of their seats as the Vermilion Junior Super League curlers faced off in the finals. The Wasylik rink skipped by Charlotte Wasylik, overcame the David McCrae rink in the A final, winning jackets and the honour of having their team player names engraved on the John Dach Memorial Junior Super League Trophy. The Dustin Babij rink came from behind with an amazing steal of three to win

third place in the A event over the Branden Cookson team.

In the B event the Tommy Gabrielson rink from Paradise Valley overpowered the Patrick Benoit rink from Lloydminster. Third in the B event went to the Courtney Heck rink with Courtney making a great draw in an extra end to beat the Jacob Swyripa rink from Kitscoty.

Marwayne Curling Club Yolanda Oberhofer Submitted

Fo r t h e w e e k e n d o f Fe b r u a r y 27-March 2 a lot of fun and great curling happened at the Marwayne Curling Rink. Twenty teams came together to compete in the annual Marwayne Ladies Bonspiel. The teams came from Paradise Hill, Paradise Valley, Marwayne, Lloydminster & Kitscoty.

The bonspiel star ted on Thursday

night with two draws, followed by two draws on Friday night as well. Also on Friday night the Marwayne curlers did a great job of putting out a delicious spread of appetizers and snacks for all to enjoy. Saturday started out early with lots of games, laughter and great curling. Every year the bonspiel has a unique theme, and this year the theme was “Villains”. The many teams took the opportunity to dress up and compete for the best costume

prize on Saturday night. There was a fantastic banquet served on Saturday night and the curling club would like to thank Colleen Hozack and her crew for another great meal at the bonspiel. Afterwards everyone was able to partake in a fun night of karaoke and dancing – thanks to George Ranching for sponsoring the karaoke! Throughout the weekend there was also a scavenger hunt for teams to compete for prizes in this as well – the town was alive with teams hurrying around town to buy fudge at the car wash, take a try at the punching bag at the bar, cram their whole team

into a phone booth or pump gas for a stranger. At the end of the weekend the A Event was won by N ola Zingel(Lloyd), the B Event was won

by Gloria Foley(Lloyd) and the C Event was won by Melissa Duriez(P.Hill). Year Old Hay... Is It A Good Deal?

Each year, as spring approaches and hay stocks be gin to dwindle, hay prices take an upward swing. It also means that some year-old stored hay comes on the market..

“Producers purchasing hay need to take the time to feed test hay that has been put-up for a year or more before making the purchase,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “While the feed may have initially been put up very well, sitting in the yard or field for an extra year has likely changed the feeding outlook of the forage.

“Hay is a perishable commodity that deteriorates when exposed to weather.

Time is a factor. For example, 90 days after cutting, the vitamin precursors’ loose “strength” and animals will require supplementation. The fat soluble vitamins A, D, and E are the first nutrients to oxidize. Injecting or feeding vitamins 90 days after animals are taken off fresh forage is necessary until they are put back on pasture the following spring.”

Bales that are stored under a shed, covered or wrapped in plastic do not deteriorate over the winter as much as hay stored outdoors. A feed test in the spring, compared to the results from the previous fall, would likely show the protein, fiber (energy) and mineral content of the hay stored under cover to be very similar.

This is not the case for hay that is stored outdoors, uncovered and on the ground.

“In a 6-foot diameter round bale, 27 per cent of the bale weight is found in the outer five inches of the bale,” says Yaremcio. “For every inch of rain, 180 pounds of water will land on the bale. Some will run off, but some will enter the bale. When the exterior of the bale is rain soaked and is exposed to weather, it rots.”

More weather damage occurs to legume hay compared to grass hay. Applying twine at 4-inch spacing reduces moisture entry into the bale compared to bales with twine at 8 inch spacing. Net wrapped bales shed rain better and have less damage than bales tied with twine. Bales wrapped with solid plastic have the least amount of damage. A denser or tighter bale sheds more water than a looser bale. As well as reduced bale weights, molds and bacteria can use up the best nutrients in a bale.

The soluble proteins and highly digestible sugars are consumed leaving off-coloured moldy feed, which reduces the feeding quality of the hay. Also, weather damage can increase the indigestible fibre levels in hay by 5 per cent or more and reduce energy levels by similar amounts.

“Because of possible quality reduction, the best advice is to feed test – even if you see last years’ feed test results, re-test the hay before purchasing and/or feeding,” says Yaremcio. “For that year-old hay, when exposed to the elements, damage occurs. Digestibility of the outer 5 inches of the bale is reduced by 20 per cent.

Overall forage digestibility in a round bale is reduced by 10 per cent. If the hay is kept over for a second year, additional weight loss occurs and digestibility is reduced even further. In some situations, this older hay could be no better than feeding cereal straw.”

If you expect this older feed will be the majority of this years’ feeding program, protein and energy supplementation will likely be required to meet animal requirements. As a guideline, hay made in 2012 should not be more than 25 to 30 per cent of the forage in the ration for cows in early- to mid-pregnancy, and 15 to 20 per cent in late pregnancy. Depending on quality, year old hay may not be suitable to

include in lactating cow or newly weaned calf rations.

To come up with a fair price when buying year old hay: - weigh the bales – do not use average weights from last fall - take a representative sample and test the feed – does the quality meet your needs - price should reflect the 10 per cent reduction in digestibility for hay that was stored outdoors – if the cows cannot digest the hay efficiently, more nutrients end up in the manure - compare the price of year old hay to greenfeed or straw – pay according to quality not forage type

What Happened In Vegas, Returns To Lakeland Lakeland College Press Release

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas isn’t the case when you go on a study trip.

Just ask any of the dozen second-year animal health technology (AHT) students who travelled to the Western Veterinary Conference (WVC) held in Las Vegas in mid-February.

The WVC is a major educational event for veterinarians and technicians. There were 250 speakers, 1,000 hours of sessions on a wide variety of topics, a large trade show and over 14,000 attendees.

For AHT student Danielle Burns, the enormity of the event was almost overwhelming as there were so many session options. She chose ones that were immediately practical such as intravenous practice and dentistry. “It reinforced what we have learned at the college and it was great to be hearing from someone else,” she says.

Student Kayla McIntyre said the trade show was a highlight for her. “There were so many businesses and company reps to talk to.”

Instructor Brianne Bellwood has been to WVC before, but this was the first year that students joined her. She believes one

of the benefits for students is getting to interact with other students and professionals from all over North America.

“The speakers are those at the top of their field. They are experts that have

written textbooks and done online presentations that the students are familiar with,” says Bellwood.

The Vermilion Lakeland College Hosts Little Royal Rodeo Angelle Lemire Reporter

This year’s activities for the Little Roya l Ro d e o will b e g i n o n Fri d ay M a rc h 14 w i th a p a n c a ke b re a kfast being held in the Mead Building, Room MB 122 at 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Registration for the 26th Annual Western Canadian Judging competition is at 8:30 a.m. in the Riding Arena with the competition kicking off at 9 a.m. To follow in the Riding Arena, there will be an Agility Club demonstration, Stock Dog demonstration and a Ranch Rodeo to finish of f the day takin g place fro m 7 – 10 p.m. There will be Ag-Citing for prospective students from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. this day.

Saturday starts off with a weigh in at 8 a.m. at the Indoor Riding Arena, with the Stockman’s Club Steer and Heifer Jr. Show beginning at 10 a.m. and an open show to follow. Little Royal Rodeo Slack will take place at 4 p.m. The Little Royal Rodeo performance at 7 p.m. has an admission of $8, ten and under free, both in the Riding Arena as well. The Night will end with a Rodeo Dance being held in the College gym starting at 10 p.m. with an admission price of $10 per person. Sunday morning the Little Royal Rodeo Slack will take place in the Riding Arena starting at 10 a.m. an d a p er formance to follow at 2 p.m. with an admission price of $8 a person, ten and under are free.

The Little Royal Rodeo has been an tradition since 1927 at the Lake-

land College and all funds go back into the College to pay for practice time, stock, facilities and coaching throughout the year. There are also many clubs from the College that benefit from the rodeo as well including Design classes, Rowing Club, Dog Agility Club just to name a few. Nearly

150 students will be competing from colleges and universities in Alberta and Saskatchewan and over a third of them are from right here on the Vermilion campus.

Lakeland College once again has a strong team this year. The College boasts the High Point Cowboy, Cody Braaten from British Columbia, and Cowgirl, Ali Mullen from Manitoba, after five Canadian Intercolle giate Ro d e o A s so ciatio n (CI R A) events. Lakeland College rodeo Rustlers are planning on making themselves known at the Canadian College Finals Rodeo presented by Martin Deerline (CCFR) March 27-19 at Edmonton Northlands.

Lakeland’s team has been competitive and has categor y leaders throu gh the first 5 ro deos of th e season. Between now and then is the annual Little Royal Rodeo in Lakeland College in Vermilion March 15 and 16.

There are 10 events in collegiate rodeo. The six traditional events bareback, barrel racing, bullriding, Lakeland’s Jaycee Hawk was last year’s pole bending champion.

A new program was piloted with the junior high class. The purchase of new machines in our home ec. lab has allowed Mrs. Jackson to teach the pupils how to sew. Each student completed three projects: fleece mittens, pajama pants, pillow cases, shorts, cushions, or aprons. The results were quite remarkable! Thank you to Janet Matyaschuk for volunteering an extra set of experienced hands in this busy classroom.

The gym was filled with community support on Feb. 24 during the School Review Community Consultation. The

superintendant, school trustees, and parent council provided the people with information and then everyone broke into smaller groups for round table discussions. The school board would like to hear from all interested parties and invite you to write letters voicing your thoughts. The next board meeting is March 19.

Miss Carmen K Jenner is a student teacher studying at the University of Alberta. She is doing her practicum with our elementary students and will be with us until Easter break. Busy Times At Mannville School Our junior boys basketball team headed to Paradise Valley on March 4 for the BTJHAA tournament. The boys have worked extremely hard all season and were looking forward to the tournament. This tournament, along with a game against Dewberry in the following week, will mark the end to the basketball season. For a wind-up the boys will be looking to play a game against their parents and teachers.

The kindergarten class has been having a blast in gym this month. They have practiced aiming at various targets using beanbags and various sized balls. Other activities have included indoor floor curling, floor hockey, scooters, and Dr. Dodge ball.

Mrs. Hinton is very proud of the Grade 1’s! They have completed and passed 94 A.R. quizzes in their first month on the program. They have been working very hard at school and at home to achieve this.

Thank you parents! In science they have been busy discovering and using their five senses. Mrs. Hinton even made them use their five senses with worms! Can you believe it? She said rocks are next.

In math, they are still working at adding and subtracting. They have had lots of fun using things like cookies and fish to add and subtract.

Grade 2’s have been busy developing their writing skills, they are learning to write complete sentences with capitals and enders and soon will begin a unit on story writing. They have almost completed their science unit on magnets and will make some special magnet games to wrap up the unit. Students are now learn-

ing to add numbers to 100 in math. Keep practicing math facts at home grade 2’s!

Mrs. Thompson continues to encourage students to read every night so they can develop their reading skills and work towards earning AR bubbles.

Fifteen students from Grades 4 to 6 have joined Mrs. Campbell’s Cooking Club. The participants will be learning basic cooking skills and nutrition, preparing healthy lowcost snacks and meals, and having fun.

We have told you that our Accelerated Reading theme this year is called “Rub a Dub Dub, AR Bubbles in the Tub.” Every student is trying hard to take those quizzes and to receive the most points within each classroom for a month. Some students have even managed to earn more

200 Apprenticeship Seats Added Lakeland College Press Release

Alberta will need to replace as many as 45,000 workers over the next decade, according to the 2014-2023 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward Forecast released recently by BuildForce Canada.

To keep up with industry demand Lakeland College will increase the number of seats available for apprenticeship students. For the 2014-15 academic year, more than 200 new seats have been allocated to Lakeland by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry and Training (AIT).

The increase is fairly evenly distributed across the college’s nine apprenticeship program areas.

John Klatt, chair of Lakeland’s school of trades and technology, is enthusiastic about the increase that will bump Lakeland’s total apprenticeship numbers to 1,548.

But that kind of growth does come with challenges says Klatt. “It will increase the requirement for instructors, as well as, space and equipment. Classroom space is a fairly easy fix, but specialized labs and equipment are more challenging,” he says.

One element that Klatt believes is important to maintain is the studentteacher ratio and small class size. “Lakeland is special because of the small class size and this is something we want to maintain. I think that is why we get a lot of students here,” he says.

An approach to meeting some of the equipment requirements is support from industry. For example, Kenilworth Combustion recently donated a tank burner system to the college.

Along with the need for new student space and instructors, is the demand to keep up with technological changes that are happening in the industry. “There has been a big change in the course outline for electrical as new topics in renewable energy have been developed. A similar situation has taken place in auto with the advent of hybrid vehicles, both big and small,” says Klatt.

“In the welder program they have

added wire feed welders to first year welding which has led to significant equipment changes in the welding labs.

Upon completion of first year welding and completion of their hours the students will receive designation as a welder – wire process operator,” he adds.

AIT is part of the provincial advanced education department. The AIT technical training system is a joint governmentindustry partnership. AIT allots training seats to individual post-secondary schools. Students in the geographic area and industry requirements are two of the factors evaluated when allocating seats.

32 CNRL Presents A Generous Donation To The Friends Of Vermilion Health Centre Society

On Fri. March 7 at the Vermilion Health Centre CNRL made a donation of $20,554.09 to local organization, The Friends of Vermilion Health Centre Society.

CNRL started their employee matching program back in 2006. This program gives the employees the choice of worthy charities and causes in the area to fundraise for a complete year and the company would match it 100%. Then all funds are donated to the charities selected. This year there were six charities which received the same amount. All funds that were donated were raised by office BBQ’s, raffles, a golf tournament and CNRL’s Major Steak and Shrimp charity action. Horseman Respond From First Setback Blair Macnab Submitted

Friday Feb 21 saw the Stangs get it together after suffering their first playoff loss.

Right from the start they looked as though their nosebags were empty and they were hungry. Even though the first leg ended with the score only showing the Stangs up by a 1-0 score it was very apparent that they weren’t going to lose this race!!

The second was a continuation of the first as the Stangs kept rolling along destined to take a series lead. The second period saw the Stangs kick in two more to open up a 3-0 margin after forty minutes.

The third was much the same as the first two as the Stangs put their brand on game 3 with a 5-1 finish.

The game was very much needed for the Stangs to get back on track!

Badger Goldsmith, Mitch Walker, Chevy Botting, Kurt Bensmiller, Brad Mcnab all reined in one each for the Stangs.

Justin Bowtell kept twenty of twenty one shots out of the barn for the win.

On Saturday February 22, game four needed extra time. Game four saw the Horseman gallop into Saskatchewan to have a showdown with a very determined bunch from Neilburg.

The first saw plenty of good action from both sides and some good saves at either end with neither squad able to light the barn lamp.

The second stanza saw the Stangs grab the lead at 5:36 and take the 1-0 lead back to the corral with them after 40 minutes.

The third was an explosion as at 0:27 seconds the Horseman were up by a pair but after the next 6 minutes went by the Monarch’s had squared the dance at two songs each. At 12:16 the Stangs surged ahead only to have the match knotted at 3 by the Monarchs at the 14:54 mark.

With both wagons reaching the wire at the same time we were headed for some extra time.

The first extra time frame solved nothing as neither side could put the biscuit in the basket.

Then after a very questionable, too many men call at the start of the second OT frame against the Horseman it was absolute karma when Brad “The Candy Man” Macnab stole the biscuit in the slot and undressed the Neilburg tender and lifted a backhander into the attic of the barn for the win.

Justin Bowtell was strong in the stall turning a side twenty of twenty three attempts for the win.

Chance Bensmiller, Nissan Botting, Badger Goldsmith, Candy Man Macnab (OT Winner) all had markers for the Stangs.

The Ranfurly Curling rink was busy on the weekend of Feb. 28 and March 2 as the mixed curling teams took over the rinks for the Friday-Saturday bonspiel with 12 teams participating.

With Ranfurly having one of the last few remaining curling natural ice surfaces in Alberta, the colder weather wa s almost a welcomed element as it helped keep the ice intact for the weekend’s events.

Books To Belize Begin Their Journey

T h e Ve r m i l i o n R o t a r y C l u b recently filled a sea can full of book headed for Belize. The contents of the container totalling 34,000 pounds has began its journey to the South American country.

Thanks to Rigid Oilfield Services the precious cargo collected by the Vermilion Rotary Club and Wainwright Club, was safely loaded onto the trailer. The Rotary club is very appreciative to the local members of the community who so generously donated to this project. Photos submitted.

hockey players from across the Prairies are invited to enter to win free jerseys for their team from Canada’s leading seed company, DuPont Pioneer.
