This is the first year that the students

held a bake sale in the Tea Room at the carnival and all funds were donated to cervical cancer research.

All proceeds made from the carnival games and snacks that were sold in the gym will go towards the Leadership Program in the school which also brings in guest speakers for the students.

Vice Principal, Mr. MacMillan, said he was really proud of all the students’ work as well as the great attendance from the community. Below photos submitted.

Local News County’s Land Use Change Opens Door For Further Talks With Altex Karen Nedzielski Reporter Despite numerous opposition from area rate payers, the County of Vermilion River has voted to re-designate a portion of land from Agricultural use to Industrial, making way for Altex Energy to move forward with its proposed oilto-rail loading terminal.

Ballroom A of the Vermilion Regional Centre was nearly full with ratepayers from the proposed site and surrounding area, located approximately six miles west of Vermilion just south of Township Road 505.

An application was made to the County by Altex for the rezoning of 155 acres between Range Road 74 and 75.

The county held the first reading of the proposed bylaw change back on Feb. 11 at the regular County meeting. The public hearing was held to allow ratepayers and concerned parties to express their opinion on the proposed facility.

Five submissions were read aloud to council and a number of concerns were addressed to council in person.

Many of the concerns were similar to that of the first proposed site in January, which included noise and air pollution, excess truck traffic and the deteriorating county road conditions. Many concerns were surrounding the fact that many residents say they were not contacted about the proposed facility.

When contacted by The Voice, Altex Energy’s Randy Meyer, said that approximately a dozen adjacent landowners were contacted and provided packages, but most in attendance stated they knew nothing of the proposed Altex facility for their area.

Glen Smith submitted a letter to the County and stated he was not notified by Altex and in his letter stated the entire process is flawed, pitting landowners against each other. The letter continued to say when he finally talked with Altex Energy’s Senior Manager of Business Development Dale Harrison, Smith asked Harrison if he would want to buy a property with a development such as the proposed Altex site. Smith said Harrison replied no, in fact he would not.

Later in the hearing when Harrison made his presentation, County of Vermilion River Councillor Stacey Hryciuk asked him the same question.

Harrison would not directly answer the question.

Resident Brett Kennedy addressed Council and said he was in favour of the proposal as long as the immediate residents are taken care of.

Ken Farkash told Council that in the past the community had turned down some great businesses that he felt would have benefitted the area. “I would be really ticked if the County turns down a project that creates jobs.”

Many other residents voiced concerns that, should the proposed rail car loading facility go ahead, the increase in the number of rail cars may be a worry to them.

The concern stems from the bridge just north of the proposed site which is barely passable and reduced to a single lane for traffic.

Some ratepayers said that should there be an accident at the proposed site, there would be no way to get out of the area, as they said the bridge is unsafe for them to use.

ATCO Electric Awareness Day Karen Nedzielski Reporter ATCO Electric held a customer appreciation day on Feb. 26 at the Mannville Rec Centre where visitors were informed of a number of items relating to the power they receive at their homes and businesses.

For those attending, there were also a number of safety demonstrations including the 10 metre safe distance from a downed power line and representatives were on hand to provide information on what to do when there is a line down. Information was also available for what to do in the event of an outage and what plan you should have in place if there is a loss of power for an extended period of time.

Lloydminster Regional Manager Brent Kobelka said the reason for the event was to give their customers a better sense of what ATCO does and provide information on a variety of topics related to power

users.

Topics included everything from learning to interpret your utility bill to the many service areas and also learning about the different aspects of the operations and maintenance department.

Another display at the event was the Hazard Hamlet where young and old were shown a miniature display of some of the common electrical hazzards, both on and off the farm. Lloydminster Customer Service Supervisor Perry Floen, talked to visitors and through the interactive display, brought awareness to the dangers of high voltage power.

The Hazard Hamlet is a tool used in school demonstrations to teach youth the dangers of getting too close to power lines and how to avoid electrical shock.

The informative evening brought awareness for local residents and those who attended, were also treated to a beef on a bun supper.

After nearly two hours of presentations, the County of Vermilion River Council held the second and third readings for the proposed land use bylaw and voted to re-designate the 155 acres from agricultural use to industrial.

Although it is just a change in land use, it does open the door to further talks of Altex’s proposed facility within the County.

Italian Meatballs W h e n i t ’s c o l d outside, turning on the oven to do some home cooking is always a good idea. I tested this recipe several weeks ago, and it is worthy of sharing with you. It is based on the Detox Meatballs recipe from Dr. Mark Hyman MD, and is found in his newest book called, 10 Day Detox Diet, which has been recently released.

What I like about this meatball recipe is the amazing flavour from the herbs.

Initially I thought the amount of Italian seasoning was overly generous, but the resulting meatballs were perfectly full of flavour and anti-inflammatory herbs.

Italian seasoning is a blend of several different herbs commonly used in Italian cooking. Many of the herbs found in Italian seasoning are some of the very best for health benefits, including anti-fungal oregano, anti-bacterial thyme and antiinflammatory sage, basil and rosemary.

Italian seasoning is found in several supermarkets.

I have not tried this recipe with beef, pork or moose yet, but it is on the radar.

You can also mix different ground meat such as beef and moose together for

unique flavor.

Large batches of meatballs can be made ahead and frozen, for quick workday meals. For meatballs to be used with sweet and sour sauce, omit the Italian seasoning and add a bit of soy sauce and 2 teaspoons chopped fresh ginger.

Italian Meatballs 2 pounds of ground turkey 1 cup diced onion 1/2 cup diced celery 2 cloves of garlic minced 2 eggs 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Finely chop the onion, garlic and celery, and then combine all of the ingredients.

Roll into balls slightly smaller than a golf ball, and place on a foil lined cookie sheet (for easier cleaning) and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Serve the meatballs topped with a mushroom sauce or a tomato sauce of your choice. Pasta or mashed potatoes are great accompanying dishes. Tomato sauce is an important source of lycopene, which studies have shown, reduce the risk of prostate, lung and stomach cancer.

Lycopene may also aid in reducing bad cholesterol and protecting cellular DNA.

Clandonald School: The Fate Of A Hamlet’s Centrepiece Sam Rothwell Reporter

At 7 p.m. on Feb. 24, the Buffalo Trails public school division had a community meeting in Clandonald to discuss the future of its school.

The primary focus of the meeting was for the school division to engage in talks with the community about declining enrolment in the school, and the possible solutions to this issue. The night began with Darcy Eddleston and Trustee Laney Parr as they introduced the administration of the school division in attendance, including Superintendent Bob Allen and Assistant Superintendent Brad Romanchuk.

Mr. Allen took the podium to inform the

audience about the laws of the land. He made it clear that the division is obliged to follow the law, and that the word ‘closure’ is hated among division staff.

Although this word implies exactly what it says, it is possible that only a portion of a school may close and still be considered a closure. Mr. Allen went on to discuss the new laws in place since Jan 2010, where superintendents review each school, and make recommendations to the respective boards.

In 2013, a review of the Clandonald school was suggested by Mr. Allen, and in 2014, a review was mandated for the board. Mr. Allen made it clear to the crowd that a decision has not been made, and will only be made at the March 19 general meeting. After this quick intro, the audi-

This year, the pupil to teacher ratio is 1:15.75 across the division, and 1:7.79 in Clandonald school. Clandonald is receiving $181,807 from its small school allocation. The division as a whole spends $8,029 per student, where each student in Clandonald has $14,950 spent on him/ her.

We heard from a very passionate and motivated principal, Sandra Beres, who went through the current split classrooms in the school. She informed us that, for the core subjects (math, language arts, science, and social studies) the classes are spit into the following Grades; 1-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9.

Following Beres, the division went over the recent staffing and enrolment decreases, and achievement scores of the school.

The Grade 3 achievement tests in Language arts and math ran parallel to that of the province. The Grade 6 results were slightly weaker than the province.

Finally, the Grade 9 results were stronger than those from the rest of the province.

These results are difficult to interpret because of so few Clandonald students taking the tests.

Mr. Allen then directed the meeting to the topic of ‘school of choice,’ which states that a parent may send their child to a preferred school, as long as they are picked up along a current bus route.

Across the entire division, there are 289 students that attend a school of choice.

22 of these 289 come from the Clandonald catchment area.

A s sis ta nt Su p e ri nte n d e nt B ra d Romanchuck moved the meeting to the three proposed options for the group to discuss concerning the school’s future; Option one involved keeping the nine current Grades, and lowering the teaching staff for next year to 3.4 FTE (full time equivalent teachers). The core subjects would be taught to the Grades as follows; 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and the remaining 3 periods per day would see Grades 1-5 and 6-9 together (for gym, art, music, etc).

Option two sees Grades 1-6 only remaining at the school, with the onsite principal remaining. The FTE would lower to 3.0 from 3.4 in option 1. For the core subjects, there would be spit classes for The

Grades 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6. The noncore timeslots would group Grades 1-3, and 4-6 together.

Option three is the same as option two, except the principal would be offsite, or communal between Clandonald and another school (which has been done in the community before, and is the current model for the division’s Hutterite schools).

Although in option two and three the school would have regular classes for six Grade levels, it is considered a closure, since the junior high would be closed.

The next section of the meeting was dedicated to the parent advisory council, led by a passionate President Yvette Lawrence. The crowd was treated to an information session on many of the benefits of having a school in Clandonald, as well as how the students benefit from attending such a wonderful school.

Many students take part in sporting events at the school, and the community loves to contribute to these events, like school skating and skiing outings.

Other important events to the school and community include the Christmas concert, and the Christmas pancake lunch at the school. Another event coming up is in the spring when the school will be attending the Jurassic Forrest.

The end of this presentation had a video of community members, students and non-students, discussing their love for Clandonald and its school. The main messages included the benefits of small classroom sizes, and the head start they feel the students receive from attending this great school.

Some of the meetings highlights were the discussions about the students at the school attended a Christmas Carol and having two other cultural field trips coming up soon. The audience was presented with information about the school becoming a VIBE school, where one day a week the students are supported for emotional and educational success.

After both sides of the table had an opportunity to present their information the room split up in to ten tables, each with a facilitator, to go over each option and contribute further ideas. This process took about half an hour, after which time each group presented their three most important discussion points. The division took all the points raised during the discussion period, and is going to present it to the board for further discussion.

Avoiding A Nightmare Karen Nedzielski Editor

Have you ever had a dream where you are in an unfamiliar place and feel as though you have lost something very important? Possibly a wallet or purse or maybe even your child? Then suddenly you wake up and find it was all a dream. It takes a minute or two for you to relax and eventually you fall back to sleep.

I simply can’t imagine how it would feel to have this play out in real life. One minute your child is asleep in their car seat, and the next minute the vehicle and baby are gone. What kind of terror would go through your mind?

Last week, an amber alert went out for

a seven month old little girl who was asleep in her car seat as the vehicle she was sitting in was stolen from the Grande Prairie area.

You hear these stories but never think it will ever happen to you. You wonder if you will ever see your child again.

Fortunately she was located a short time later unharmed but I have to ask the question; why was the child left in the vehicle unattended in the first place?

What would possess a parent or guardian to leave a child unattended in a vehicle, in winter, leaving the opportunity for a thief to do what they do best, steal.

I am sure that the adult responsible for the child was only going to be a minute, possibly running into the building to grab something really quick, but that is how these things happen. Theft is a crime of opportunity. If we make it easy for the

crime to take place, it will!

The same goes for home break-ins.

Leaving valuables unlocked is only asking thieves to help themselves.

Years ago it was acceptable, and in some cases common practise, to leave the doors unlocked. If a neighbour needed help or had to use the phone, they could be assured a short walk to the next farm would see the door open, whether the homeowners were there or not.

In today’s world, leaving any sort of valuables in a vehicle or house unlocked, is almost a form of bait to the criminals.

With this particular incident, you can most likely bet the parents were sickened and inconsolable, not knowing the child’s health, safety or whereabouts. The thoughts that ran through their minds must have been horrible.

With the help of the Amber Alert system, a massive number of people were informed in a very short period of time which put thousands of eyes out there looking for the suspect and stolen vehicle.

This pressure is probably what spurred the thief to leave the child on the steps of a residence where it was found only a few hours after its abduction.

It is easy to say “I’ll only be a minute” and leave the little one sound asleep in the back seat instead of going through the hassle of waking them up and removing them from the car seat just to run in for a quick stop.

Wouldn’t it be easier to do that than spend the hours consoling those parents as they go through the nightmare of their lives?

Letter to the Editor Letter in Response to: Letter To The Editor - Feb. 3, 2014 issue of The Voice, Leon Benoit “Railways Must Move Record Crop” I read Mr. Benoit’s article in the paper where he said the government was going to look into the performance of the railroad in moving grain. IT’S ABOUT TIME! As far as the rails’ performance in hauling grain, Mr. Ritz and others have been “asleep at the wheel” for the last few years! Shippers were complaining about cars not being spotted when they are needed. Now farmers are facing a major disaster. It’s time for them to finally wake up!

C.P. rail had record profits in 2013, they

hauled 68 per cent more oil by rail, yet they idled 400 locomotives, idled thousands of cars and laid off 4,500 employees. Who in their right mind would do this? They have trains running in North Dakota hauling oil out of the Bakken oil fields to the refinery.

As of November, Mr. Ritz was saying the railroads were doing a good job of moving grain! Now the country elevator system is filled at 95 per cent capacity, there are loaded cars everywhere on the tracks and the terminals at the west coast are at 38 per cent, not enough of some grains and canola to fill Export Commitments. They just are not getting the grain there.

Since harvest there has been a backlog of grain vessels waiting to load, the

grain that was needed was not there.

This resulted in cancellations of wheat and canola cargoes that were committed for export. Farmers are losing sales and running up huge demurrage charges. Price wise farmers are losing $2 per bushel on Hard Spring Wheat and $5 per bushel on canola, while grain companies and crushers will be making windfall profits!

Since Mr. Ritz became the Minster of Agriculture he seems to have abandoned the nations farmers and “ threw the agriculture sector under the bus!”

He is off-loading costs onto farmers. An example is the Canadian Grain Commission by cutting funding for plant breeders and research, yet in 2013 they gave Ford

Motor Company $250 million for research.

They also want to hand over the research and royalties to private chemical and seed companies leaving the farmers to once again foot the bill. Last time Government tinkered with plant breeders rights, our canola seed went from $5 per bushel to $55. Also gutted our safety net AgStability where may have to be in a negative income to be eligible for a claim. In January when USA passed their new farm bill, the US farmers can get coverage at 83 per cent of their five year average. A far cry from what we have here!

Vermilion’s Shawna Zaharko Qualifies For Nationals-Sprint Distance Angelle Lemire Reporter

Born and raised in Vermilion Shawna, daughter of Pete and Iris Zaharko, attended school here, and is a graduated of J.R. Robson High. She was one of the high achieving athletes in her grade receiving numerous awards and setting track and field records. Shawna later went on to play Collegiate Volleyball and earned athlete of the year in 1991 at the Vermilion Lakeland College where she also completed her Business Administration Diploma.

Several years ago she took up running which translated into the multisport of Triathlon, which includes swimming, biking and a run, all in one event. Last year was a fabulous year of achievement for her athletic career which saw her qualify for Nationals in her age group in the U.S. at Sprint Distance which is scheduled to take place this August in

Wisconsin. As well she is on the Canadian Triathlon team for the Olympic distance for ITU World’s also in August of this year in Edmonton.

Her goal now is to qualify for World’s at the Half Ironman Distance. This year the 70.3 World Championships will be held in Mont Tremblant, QC. She is currently fund raising and is part of Team in Training to earn a spot at the starting lineup for a World Qualifying race in the U.S., that she and her coach are hoping will be the race that will qualify her for the World’s.

It is a b ea utiful morning, the sunrise very welcoming and warm, for some reason the deer seem to be everywhere in the fields feeding in large herds of a dozen to twenty.

Thankfully that heat wave we had in January melted a lot of snow and deer are feeding in bare patches. Okay, it wasn’t a heat wave but any warm spell that lasts a week and melts two feet of snow in Janu-

ary is close enough.

It probably saved countless deer and by going for a walk, I could see by their tracks that they were not going too far from the feed. In fact they were laying in the fields in mid-day, which may make my job of antler shed hunting a little easier also.

Speaking of tracks and tracking, it’s funny how well I can stand in the middle of nowhere and read a story just by tracks left. I guess I was born with it in my blood from a long line of ancestors, and with thanks to my mentor, my grandfather, who taught me so much when I didn’t even think I was being educated.

With his vast teachings that began as soon as I could walk, I take a lot of my knowledge for granted as I have been “tracking” my entire life, most of which has been living and playing in the wilderness.

I had started instructing Wilderness Survival in my teens in the seventies, which was a thriving business until the late nineties with the advanced technology like the cell phone and GPS. As a survival instructor involved in wilderness Search and Rescue, I also became certified

in “Man-Tracker” operations, which came so natural to me and impossible for others.

Another huge influence back in the day was computers and the internet. I read every book I could get my hands on, and one author “Tom Brown” was the ultimate tracker as far as books were concerned, and I still have them all.

I am so very thankful to be blessed with the given skills as a “tracker” as it is so interesting and adds to any adventure.

Recently, after the big melt, we had several inches of snow, and I ventured forth in the treed “back forty” to explore.

I spent hours there watching adventures through my mentor’s eyes by just tracks in the snow, a hyper weasel that never stopped and has to explore everything, a grouse that spent the night under snow that the weasel spooked to flight.

I noticed one of the wife’s kitties that dared venture out to hunt, and then the coyote tracks that followed it. The coyote got distracted when it crossed a solo set of rabbit tracks. Then even a mouse as it dipped in and out of the snow like our over and under passes in the cities.

alarms must be wired. In today's electrical code it is required that each level of a home contain a smoke alarm. When an event causes a single alarm to sound, all the smoke alarms in the home must sound. This has recently happened in my home. A friend left something on the burner to cook and came upstairs to chat. About ten minutes went by and all of a sudden the alarm went off next to where we were visiting. I had no idea what caused the alarm but followed the friend downstairs to discover 10" of smoke on the ceiling. I was grateful my alarms were tied together. I always recommend having at least one battery alarm as well and to place the alarms near cooking areas and in hall ways outside bedrooms. Remember you can never have too many smoke alarms. Be safe!

Alongside the mouse tracks were large finger like markings in the snow, wing tips from a bird of prey, as it swopped in for a snack but missed as the mouse disappeared under the snow. The mouse tracks forced me to giggle at myself, as it related to one of Tom Brown’s stories of teaching people to actually track a mouse across a dry concrete barn floor. Sounds impossible but is easier than it sounds. That story always stuck in the back of my head and after decades, it was only a dozen or so years ago, I made an adventure of it.

In our archery shop we had snacks for the shooters such as chocolate bars and chips, which one particular mouse was very partial to. It was late fall and we had the big garage doors open, which the harvest coated the shop with a light layer of dust. With the right natural light of a bright autumn sun, I was even amazed how you could actually track a mouse on a concrete floor. So there I was flat on the floor following the mouse’s every move.

It’s neat how they run in a perfect straight line, until something that’s looks like food where they veer off, with many tracks around the source, whether it’s food or not…than off again.

I tracked that mischievous critter for an hour as it disappeared and reappeared from everywhere which led to the main work table in my shop. With my entire body under the table, I peeked around a case of pop stored under it.

There we met, both wide eyed…with a loud EEEK…and that the mouse, I swear because I screamed like a school girl and slammed my head on a cross member of the table trying to vacate.

If you were to use an Olympic stopwatch I think I beat the mouse out from under the table by a millionth of a second, true story!!!

When the Smoke Clears It was shortly after that I learned something else. If you build a better mouse trap you will catch better mice!

That’s the official name I gave my ranch, mainly because almost every direction you looked from my yard you could see coulee hills. Looking west out my picture window you’d see at the end of my driveway, the Grizzly Bear Coulee, three quarters of a mile or so across. Then stepping into the kitchen and looking out over the sink you’ll see another coulee that is at least a half mile across. You can see the far side of it, but all the glorious country is hidden until you walk a short way to enable you to see down into the coyote, deer and incredible wildlife factory it is. All my life that country engendered in me a deep enduring love, I so wish I still lived there.

I controlled all of section two and this coulee ran right between the east and west halves. All the farmed land on the east side required a three mile trip to get most of the bigger equipment across. Any time I could, I’d hike the distance across

that coulee if time permitted, and often it was the only way I could get home without relying on someone to come get me.

The little creek held such treasures of round stones and logs of petrified wood and horns on long dead animals that the spring floods would free from their ancient burial places. There were so many types of berries in there and it was always a thrill to pick a bouquet of flowers, different ones in different seasons.

I kept that coulee for winter grounds for my cows and never allowed it to be pastured in summer. So all winter, especially on nice days, those cattle enjoyed nipping the buds off all those bushes and I think really benefited from that. Just below the rim on my yard side there was a steep drop down to a nice pocket of a place surrounded by thick brush that protected those cows from any storm. The only trick was getting them back up on top past the snow drift that would form at the top. I also had to brush cut a trail to roll my round bales down for their bedding. It was a natural place to winter cattle. Come spring I’d shut the gate so the cattle couldn’t get

down in those wild hills to calf, and as soon as the calf came I ran the pair across the runway into the Grizzly Bear to my spring pasture. I never had a case of scours in my calves. I was lucky to have had such a set up. Talking of my runway, the east ended on the west edge of the Coulee and allowed me to drive into the coulee and follow it around to the Grizzly Bear, turn and line up to the west end of the airstrip and climb up and land. I could fly a circuit below the level of the strip. Not too many places that could be possible, that I’ve heard of anyway.

Down the long hill from the runway was a natural ski run that would allow you to really pick up speed. Going down was speedy, but the trip up was a tad slow and laborious, it took a little know-how to do the herring bone deal and climb up that hill. You had a chance to taste the snow on the way down until you mastered the idea of staying upright on the skis. On a good day I could make three trips.

Spring time and winter, I had to try to keep the beaver population under control and make sure they didn’t clean out all the trees along the little creek. They would

soon over populate if left to their own devices. Besides all the beaver hunting and hiking after berries there were the coyotes and deer to hunt too. I have so many wonderful memories of the time I had to enjoy those hills. That would exclude the job of fencing those hills that took special skills and stamina to that trick. I had hill climbing trails that could test any 4X4 and I got a kick out of people who came out to try and wouldn’t even drive down the slope. “Are you crazy?” would be the standard question. I’d just tell them the trail got there by someone driving it. I didn’t elaborate. In the task of fencing the 4X4’s were a great help. Until their appearance a lot of the fencing was done by hand and on foot!

I decided I needed to have a registered name for my ranch and I really like the Coulee view name. Turned out that name was already taken and the Alberta Gazette where names are registered suggested I perhaps could make a name spelled differently and that it maybe could be registered.

I put my creative skills to use and came up with Kul´e Vue. If you have imagination you can make it sound like Coulee View.

Mannville Skaters Entertain At Annual Carnival

The Mannville Skating club held its annual carnival and the skaters performed their routines, entertaining the nearly packed house of family, friends and neighbours. The theme for this year’s event was “So You Think You Can Skate” and carried out a bit of a retro feel to some of the performances as well as a number of modern style routines. After the singing of O Canada, the show got underway with the group’s 28 skaters taking to the ice in their yearly performances. A brief intermission allowed for spectators to take part in the raffle tables and enjoy food and beverages from the concession. none like the one in my friend’s house re s e r ve d fo r co m p a ny o n l y. K i d s crossed that threshold at their own peril. I stole into it once when his mother was outside, feeling like Alice peering with shaky-legged wonder through the Looking Glass. We didn’t have furniture like that, all matching and arranged around the room in balance. Framed artwork whose colour scheme complemented the walls. We didn’t cover our lamps and sofa with plastic either. After viewing that room, I knew that there was something wrong with us. We were definitely lacking, possibly even borderline uncouth.

I blamed my parents for being inept at the fine art of living properly since I was just a kid. My parents. Well, what could you expect? My dad, the guy who sat in his chair, deaf to the world for hours at a time while reading some old, outdated book on the History of Who Cares or maybe a scientific exploration of The Brain, inside and out. My dad, who regularly invited the Jehovah’s Witnesses inside for coffee and friendly

debates on the merits of faith, humanity, and truth. My mother, sitting by the window and losing all track of time, reading cover to cover everything from rumour-hawking tabloids to irrelevant old 18th Century novels and stories of the human condition according to the Reader’s Digest. My mother, the unbeatable Scrabble and trivia champion who, in conversation, rarely used words containing more than two syllables. Good cover. Weirdos, the both of them.

By design, the part of our lives designated as Youth offers us a giant bowl of obstinate, full-on oblivion. Sometimes the sides of that bowl can be pretty steep, requiring that we work well into our twenties and beyond to acquire the skills and awareness necessary to scale its sides, slick as they are with teenaged stink, narcissism, and a fat dose of derision aimed directly at our parents. Eventually, most of us scramble up and escape into enlightenment as reflective, respectful adults. Our parents, thankfully, have often become more refined by then.

What my childhood home lacked in neat, rarely used dustless rooms and matching furniture, it overflowed with in a literary cornucopia of books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals, texts----and a sort of unscholarly reverence for the continued acquisition of knowledge. Any knowledge. Stuffed under a cushion, there might be a True Detective magazine. On a chair, a John Steinbeck novel, stacked in between

newspapers on the floor, a Pierre Berton epic on the History of Canada, a mechanic’s manual, or an outdated high school Algebra text. And I can’t forget the thousand pound Webster’s dic tionar y whose cracked binding required strict adherence to a handle with care rule during transport.

I’ve been revisiting those early days during what has been dubbed Freedom to Read week across Canada. Reading is knowledge and knowledge is power. Yes, of course. But reading is much more than that, isn’t it? Reading encourages an expansion of that which we think we already know. It’s how we experience what has gone before us, our history. We learn to consider points of view that vary from our own, sometimes vastly. Reading enables us to practise our skills in discerning where we stand on important issues. It informs. It entertains.

It teaches. It introduces us to people, sentiments, subjects, images, conditions, and biases in places both similar to and completely different from our own. It engages and challenges us to think, to reflect. It impels us to strive ever forward in an effort to acquire a deeper understanding of our world and the vast array of occupants inhabiting it.

Pretty cool, this reading thing. It came highly recommended to me by some people I knew quite well, and whose many perceived shortcomings I have long ago forgiven.

St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

Spartans’ Girls Claim League Basketball Title The Stars were out at St. Jerome’s School as the Grade 10 Leadership class held their annual Carnival. This year was “Hollywood/Movie” Theme. You could get your picture taken with Elvis or Marilyn Monroe at the Photo Booth, try your luck at the Celebrity Cake Walk, or even the “Jaws” fish pond. The Harry Potter Quiditch Toss was very popular as well as the Toy Story Jr. Hoopla. At the Duck Dynasty Pluck-A-Duck booth children got the chance to win a variety of stuffed animals. There were a large variety of silent auction items to bid on throughout the night as well. Congratulations to Sean Kingston for winning $200 at the 50/50. The Raffle Ticket winners were: $50 – Brian Hodgson, Sadie Christenson, Neil Rogan, and Josie Stepanick, $100 – Donald Keenan, and $250 – Mark and Cathy Bartley. The Grade 9 Girls Basketball team set up a lovely Tea Room selling delicious popcorn balls, cupcakes and other yummy treats with all proceeds going to Cancer research.

St. Jerome’s was a sea of pink on Wednesday, Feb. 26 as students wore

every shade of pink possible to show that they will “Stand Up to Bullying”. Elementary Happigrams were held as well on Wednesday. Mrs. Moore’s class acted out and then did the Waltz of the Chickadee dancing with their parents to end the waltz. They then sang the song, “I Think Your Wonderful”. Congratulations to all the February Happigram winners for all their accomplishments.

Congratulations to the St. Jerome’s Junior girls basketball team as they won the Highway 16 Championship on Feb. 22.

On Saturday, the Spartan’s defeated the Kitscoty Cavaliers, 61-13. In the championship game the Spartan’s defeated the Marwayne Wildcats, 59-33. The Grade 8-9 Spartans had an incredible season, going undefeated, winning all 21 games.

They achieved a gold in the Marwayne tournament, Paradise Valley tournament, St. Jerome’s tournament, Bishop Lloyd tournament, and counties. They were also League champs. Awesome work girls!

Grade 8-9 Jr. Boys defeated Marwayne 39-31 in the semi-finals of Highway 16.

Next game is against Kitscoty for the Highway 16 Championship.

Miss Crystal has been coming once a week to help the kindergartens learn strategies to deal with frustrating situations. The children are engaged in a part of the Superflex program where they are

practicing positive statements and a positive attitude. Kindergarten went on a field trip to tour the Post Office. They even posted Valentines to themselves.

We would like to welcome three University of Alberta practicum students to St. Jerome’s. Each of these young people are doing their nine-week practicum

with us and will be here until Easter holidays. Jaime Hougham - Mrs. Roth Grade 4, Elysha Villeneuve – Mrs. McCormack Grade 5, Michael Olsen – High School Social (Mr. Sommer and Mr. MacMillan).

We are excited to have these three young teachers with us and hope they can learn as much from us as we will from them.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES Students Take Up Swimming The kindergarten kids had lots of fun on their field trip to Boston Pizza on Feb. 24 and 25. Ms. Kelly did an amazing tour of the restaurant and the students were able to tour the kitchen, make their own chef hats, and then make their very own pizzas.

The kindergarten staff and students would like to thank Ms. Kelly and Boston Pizza for this great learning experience and to Darren Selte for driving the bus in such cold weather.

This week we continued to increase awareness about bullying as we took time to recognize the importance of taking action to stop this very destructive behavior. Bullying continues to be a significant problem in society, so on Feb. 26, Pink Shirt Day was celebrated at VES. Many staff and students dressed in pink shirts as well as pink paraphernalia ranging from hats to jewellery to various pieces of clothing. The pink shirt symbolizes the power that we all have to stop bullying behav-

iors. Please do your part to take a stand against bullying, as this is certainly not just an issue amongst children, but is also an adult problem.

As of Jan. 31, our Accelerated Reading program was halfway along for this school year. Homeroom teachers calculated which students had reached their halfway goal, and those students were rewarded with a sundae on Feb. 27. As well, there was a jungle book scavenger hunt that all students in all grades had the opportunity to participate in.

Swimming lessons have started in VES. The 5B class went during the last two weeks and the 1B class starts on March 3.

Throughout spring, most classes will take swimming lessons at the college.

On the evening of March 10, there will be a community meeting with the board.

Then on March 11, the board will be touring our school for 75 minutes from 8:309:45.

For the second reporting period, VES will be scheduling two evenings to meet with parents about their child’s progress. The first evening, March 12, will

On March 1, the Children’s Carnival held at the Vermilion Regional Center brought in quite a few participants. Grady and Cassie Cameron enjoyed some down time playing Prize Bingo in Central Park before heading on to many different New York themed games. Organizer of the event and Vice President of the Parents Society Shannon Leonard said they put on fundraisers throughout the year but this one was specifically for the dancers to go to New York for some master classes as well as professional dance workshops. Olympic Medalist Carter Rycroft Visits Mannville School Our senior high mixed curling team headed to St. Paul on Feb. 21 and 22 to compete in the Zone 4 championship.

Brandan Lyster, Andrea Bury, Davin Charron and Karlee Melynk played amazingly throughout the two-day tournament beating teams from Innisfree, St. Paul, Bonnyville and Lloydminster. As a result the team won the gold medal round and are now heading to ASAA Curling Provin-

cials in Leduc on March 6 to 8!

Our junior high curling teams were invited to the Innisfree curling rink for a year end wind up celebration. They played a six end game followed by pizza and snacks. Thirty seven kids enjoyed a day skiing at Table Mountain on Feb. 26. After an early morning start they had a slight mishap and needed to wait for an alternate bus in Lloydminster. They were back on the road in an hour and the ski hill staff quickly got them on the hill when they arrived. They are coming without snow pants, toques, boots, mitts, etc. Even last week when it was minus 40 with the wind chill, this was a problem. This is a safety issue so please ensure that you dress your child appropriately for the weather.

Mrs. Speck from VIBE has been busy bringing study skills to Grades 9, 10 and 11. They have been looking at learning styles, organization, test anxiety, and different ways to study. It is often assumed that students should know how to study, but study skills are learned and need to be taught to students. Students who are struggling with their studying or learning

may contact VIBE for help in this area.

The Mannville School curling program was privileged to have Carter Rycroft, former Canadian Olympic medalist, visit the Mannville Curling club to put on a curling clinic for our young athletes. He demonstrated proper throwing and sweeping techniques and was able to give all the curlers a bit of one-one coaching on how to improve their skills. It was a very informative session and the students asked great questions and came away from the event with many ways to improve and practice their curling skills. Mr. Rycroft even brought along a broom signed by his current team that is heading to the Briar in March. We know our students will be cheering him on!
