Vermilion’s New Year’s Baby Is Finally Here Angelle Lemire Reporter

On Feb. 16, second-time parents Samantha and Josh Walters, went to the Vermilion Health Centre expecting to have their baby but the little b u n d l e o f j o y w a s j u s t n o t q u i te r e a d y to m e e t t h e w o r l d , s o t h e

family was sent home at approximately 5:30 p.m.

At a ro u n d 8:30 p.m. S a ma ntha went back to the hospital, and with baby being in proper position, she was ready to meet her new baby girl.

Being six days overdue and an all natural birth, at 1:01 a.m. on Feb. 17, S a m a n t h a a n d J o s h Wa l t e r s

along with big sister Peyton, welcomed baby Layla Joanne Lee Walters, who was named the N ew Year’s baby at the Vermilion Health Centre. Baby Layla weighed in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 20 inches long.

Warm Weather Brings Out Many Participants For Vermilion’s Family Try-Athlon Angelle Lemire Reporter The third annual Family Day activities, organized by the Vermilion Wellness Coalition and supported by a grant from FunTeam Alberta, were held at the Vermilion Provincial Park on Monday, Feb. 17 with registration at the CN Station.

The beautiful weather drew 124 registered participants and another 25

who just came to soak up some sun and have some fun.

The Family Try-Athlon had participants of all ages with activities including snowshoeing, frisbee golf, tobogganing as well as bannock cooking over a campfire.

Contestants were able to warm up with some homemade apple cider and hot chocolate.

A children’s corner was also set up across from the CN Station for young p a r ti c i p a n t s w h o ke p t b u s y w i th

bubbles and snow painting. It was also enjoyed by some of the adult participants.

Those who registered at the CN Station and upon completion of all activities, were also entered into draws which included gift certificates from various businesses and individuals who donated prizes for the day. The winners of the prizes were Andrea Cassibo

Saying Good Bye To Branch President Finance Advisor Angelle Lemire Reporter Back in June of 1992, Colleen Berg, who said she liked being in small towns, was transferred to our Scotiabank community branch to cover a maternity leave. She has worked for the Scotiabank since 1976

when she first started in Edmonton, but given the opportunity, Colleen made the permanent move to Vermilion.

In Vermilion, Berg was named President Financial Advisor in 2002 because of her strong financial advice and her commitment to their clients.

Branch Manager Mabel Smart said Berg never hesitated to be part of our commu-

nity. Just some of the numerous parts she played included being a member of Good Life Institute, judging the parade floats, being an active member of VES Hot Lunch Program and the list goes on.

Berg will be officially retiring from the bank on Feb. 28. She said she will continue to raise cattle with her family on their farm just south of Minburn.

Branch Manager Mable Smart said she is sad to see her go and is going to miss her dearly. “The whole branch is kind of like a second family and we want to wish her a long, healthy, happy retirement.”

There were many smiles and hugs to go around. Berg said she will now concentrate on her passion for raising cattle, photography, and golf.

East Central Alberta’s Best Kept Secret Open For Business Karen Nedzielski Reporter If you are looking for some winter fun you will not have to travel far to get your fill of some great downhill skiing.

The Mount Joy Snow Resort, located just eight miles south of Blackfoot on Range Road 20, may be one of East Central Alberta’s best kept secrets.

The resort is open during the weekends and is a volunteer-run organization. It offers a number of services including affordable ski and snowboard rentals as well as lessons for all ages.

The resort is open to all ages of skiers and organizers say it is a fun and safe activity to help get off the couch and may help beat the winter blues.

The hill is equipped with a cable tow and t-bar lift and offers a chalet

for warming cold fingers and toes and tasty food for an all-day adventure.

The resort will be hosting its annual Rail Jam competition on March 2 where it will see a number of snowboarders and skiers take to the rail riding competition in hopes of winning a number of prizes up for grabs. The day will include entertainment and a bonfire barbecue throughout the day.

Mount Joy also has the equipment to make snow should Mother Nature refuse to cooperate and the resort is open from early January until March or for as long as the conditions allow.

Vermilion Striker Lanes Hosts Vegerville

Owner, Kim Abrams of Striker Lanes, is also manager and coach of the 55 plus bowling league. The team gets together every Monday and Friday to practice.

The most senior players are, for the ladies Kidi Pashulka, 94 and for the men Emil Korpan, 96. They meet with St. Paul once a year and were hosting Vegerville on Feb. 20. Abrams makes it extra fun by getting the players to wear different hats from devil horns to Mohawks when they hit the middle pin first. Whoever is wearing the hat at the end of the game is the winner of $10. Also, they slap hands to share the luck if they get a spare or a strike. Olympic Fever Karen Nedzielski Editor

Over the past week or so many people have been crowded around television sets and computers watching the numerous sporting events being telecasted from Sochi, Russia’s Olympic games.

One by one as the event began holding its gold medal matches, people stared at screens in hopes that Canada (or their home country) would claim a medal and take their place on the podium.

It was fantastic to see both the women’s and men’s teams take the gold medals for curling and hockey.

In the history of the Olympics, never

has a women’s curling team gone undefeated throughout the entire tournament. And the team did it on their first Olympic appearance. How wonderful it must have felt for those athletes to claim the win, as at home, I could be barely contain myself.

A similar story played out during the women’s hockey game as beverage-room big screens and living rooms became the hot spot to view the game.

Even some schools participated in the excitement as students crowded around smart boards and TV screens to watch the excitement, all in hopes of watching the Canadian team win the gold medal. And they would not be disappointed. In an action packed final few minutes, Canada made a dramatic comeback sending the game into to overtime.

Although I am not usually a big fan of watching sports on television, I did find myself tuning in to radio and online updates to see how the teams were doing.

It was also very interesting to see how the schools in the area held their own form of Olympics, modifying the sports events to suit their events.

Bobsledding on blankets, pairs skating on slippery floors, whatever the sport, it appears everyone is getting in the spirit and having fun.

When it comes to sports, Canadians have always seemed to be very patriotic. Whether winter or summer sports, Canadians rally behind their athletes. It is not limited to just professional sport though, as hockey and curling rinks are filled with spectators and supporters of minor league games as they play-

out among the communities around the region.

This past weekend Vermilion played host to the College Provincial Curling championships and once again, you could see the support of the community shine through. It may not have been the Olympics, but it was still exciting for curling enthusiasts.

Whatever you preference, I encourage you to get out and show your support for sports in the area. It is a healthy activity and gets the youth away from the electronic devices that can sometimes take over our world.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, As I was driving to work this morning in the heavy fog, suddenly ahead of me and out of nowhere there was a white truck. Luckily I was driving slowly and after hitting the brakes I ha d plent y of tim e to s to p. This

has happened to me several times as I drive every day from Clandonald to Vermilion particularly in fog o r b l owi n g sn ow. This is a s afet y issue with a ver y simple solution.

Please turn on your lights when the snow is blowing or it is foggy. Many

people seem to think that because their day lights are on in the vehicle as soon as they start up then they also have rear lights on. This is not so. In order for your rear lights to be on you must turn on your vehicle lights. Let’s make the roads a little

safer by performing this act. Then yo u will b e m o re visib le in fo g o r blowing snow and we will all have a safer trip on the roads.

These newsreels were filmed by the

Canadian Army Film Unit during the Second World War to document the troops in training and on the front lines. The front-line cameramen were soldiers first. In addition to camera instruction, they received infantry training and took guns into battle along with their heavy 35 mm movie cameras.

It’s nice to see the somewhat warming rays of sunlight in the early mornings once again. It is rising earlier every day and also setting much later as our days are getting longer.

We are all looking forward to the Equinox and more so the Solstice.

First the Equinox, a word that is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal and night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the sun rises and sets due east and west.

We know it better as the first day of spring which is March 20 this year.

Spring is a very welcome time of the year after a deep freeze that seemed to take forever to end.

Then comes the Summer Solstice which I really look forward to, the word Solstice is derived from the Latin word solstitium. Sol meaning sun and stitium meaning “to stop” reflecting on the fact the sun seems to stop in the heavens.

As it’s the longest day of sunlight of the year, we know it better as the first day of summer which falls on June 21 this year, a day of never ending sun light and warmth.

On the opposite side of the spectrum there is a fall Equinox on September 23 and a winter Solstice, December 21, which is the nasty little event we are trying to endure now.

I guess I could have said “I can’t wait for spring and summer” instead of confusing you with all that…ha ha. It’s just interesting that ancient cultures thousands of years ago knew how to follow the Equinox and Solstice more than most today.

Regardless, I can’t wait to greet both. It’s not that I hate winter, it just

gets old fast and takes forever to pass.

With the worst behind us (fingers and toes crossed) I am ready to venture on hard bare ground again.

With that nice heat wave in January that had left the fields bare, or so it looks. The snow has dropped feet in some areas but what is left is hard crusty patches that makes walking all but impossible still.

An d o n ce we g et b rave en o u g h to ventu re o ut in that, we a re so exhausted its hard to make it back out because it’s still very deep, more so in the wilderness areas.

Deer, elk, and moose, are starting to shed their antlers now. That warm spell and resulting bare patches in fields was a huge bonus for the deer and elk, as it exposed some feed for them. It also makes it a great place to look for shed antlers if one can walk to these areas. Then again they will most likely still be laying there with the April melt…ha ha.

With all the New 2014 line of bows just released we have many of the new bows to play with so I have been playing a lot on the indoor range, which I really enjoy.

Our club At L.O.S.T. Arrow Archery has recently started our 2014 winter leagues in the New Year, and already a Viking local Curtis Carrington has set the bar extremely high.

We sh o ot what is c a ll e d a FITA Vegas round used worldwide with the leagues. It is the same rules, targets and scoring system high tech target

bow shooters use except we use the same bow hunter tackle we hunt with.

The FITA round is shot and scored with ten-3 arrow rounds, for a total of thirty arrows and a perfect score is 300 points. Curtis shot a 290 score which is exceptional for a 100% bow hunter class bow.

A Case Of Pickled Herring Franklin Wolters Columnist

Fo r th ose of you who aren’t acquainted with pickled herring, they are a staple food in Germany. Dad had a recipe that had been passed down from generation to generation from way back. The herring would come heavily salted in a nice little wooden cask and they had to be unpacked and cleaned and then soaked to get rid of some of the salt.

Quite a messy procedure as I remember. After that was done the fish were cut up into pieces about 2 inches long and then packed in alternate layers of sliced onion and fish in a gallon jar.

When the jar was full, a special pickle brine was poured into completely cover the onions and fish. The spices and all were carefully made to make the flavor just so. The jar was left in a cool place for a week or so!

Now you can buy these little tidbits all done and ready, but in my childhood times it was do it yourself, or go without. I doubt you could find those little barrels of salted herring this side of Germany anyway. So now the pickled herring are set we’ll start the other side of the story.

My Grandpa Wolters had passed away in the hospital in the fall of 1948 after a long series of operations and infection had set in and as antibiotics weren’t available he passed away.

It was a very traumatic happening for a young lad of eleven and his passing really touched me as he was such a close and real part of my life. Things like that really affect our thoughts it seem so maybe just maybe that’s why

what happened-happened.

Fast forward a couple of months and we’re at the supper table and Mom proudly sets the jar of these pickled herring before us. Nothing could please Dad more than these delicacies prepared just as he loved them and the look of delight on his face was wonderful to see. And of course I always did as I saw Dad doing and managed several of these pieces of fish and onion! Soon after supper we were all safely tucked into bed and were soon asleep. Sometime in the middle of the night I was awakened and was alarmed to be aware of a being, I’ll say standing beside my bed looking down at me. Now this being was just an outline with no features or expression but it reached out as if to touch me and of course I squirmed out of its reach. Now brother Elmer objected to being crowded and kind of held his place, so when this being bent over and extended his reach, I had to shove Elmer over again. Whatever it was seemed a bit annoyed and really came over again extending his reach. I think my scream probably loosened the shingles on the roof of our bedroom and in seconds the whole house was a bedlam of activity as everyone came running to see who was being murdered. It was a scene I’ll never ever forget. Of course Mom blamed it on a nightmare brought on by eating too much pickled herring. Be that as it may I know I never touch any again for years. Also I know that I kept my head covered for an even longer time, and as it thought about it I can’t ever think I was dreaming, because I was fully awake and saw what I saw. ‘ T h e Fu t u r e i s Unwritten’ is a 2007 documentary about Joe Strummer, former front man and primary songwriter for The Clash. The film highlight s many asp ec t s of th e man’s p ersonal an d public life but what resonates is a theme of the relationship between performer and audience. Throughout Strummer’s often tumultuous career, he held true to his stance that in order for music to be valid, it must remain relevant to the people who listen to it. Music must be inclusive, as intimate as a sing-along around a campfire. He seemed to feel a responsibility for keeping in touch with that grassroots sentiment, despite the challenge of the ever-increasing demands of fame.

In January of this year, the voice o f l e g e n d a r y f o l k p i o n e e r, P e t e S e e g e r, w a s s i l e n c e d . Ev e r y o n e knows that name, even people who don’t care a hoot about folk roots

music, but especially the ones who do care deeply. Seeger utilized song for many purposes throughout his l o n g c a re e r. H e u s e d i t to s p e a k out ab out injustice. H e used it to unite people in optimism. He never wavered from his belief that music exists for and belongs to the people.

Seeger demonstrated over and over that there is hardly anything in this world so uplifting and powerful as the sound of many voices united in song.

Internationally renown songwriters deserve our respect and attention; they’ve achieved plenty. But only a very few walk that road. The space just outside the spotlight of fame is a crowded house rife with songwriters highly skilled but mostly unknown.

These travelling bards of the Road Less Famous depend upon organizations like Home Routes, a non-profit that arranges regional and crosscountry tours, for their audiences.

Part of the beauty of smaller, more intimate venues, is the opportunity of building and sharing a sense of community. It’s the performer who takes the stage, but there’s often a sense of ‘we’re all in this together’ present at such events. No doubt, Seeger would have approved of such ambience. He viewed folk music and community as inseparable.

Folk roots music, at least according to my rather broad definition, is simply music of the people. It ’s music that celebrates, recreates, and reflects our own stories. Folk music may include many styles, its form and scope evolving as we do. It’s a reflection of the world we occupy, both inside and outside of ourselves.

Songwriters give voice to our shared stories while inviting us to add our own voices to the mix.

Th e p revio usly sch e dule d flo o r curling tournament had to be rescheduled to March 19 because of conflicting tournaments with our neighboring communities. Gert Isert was kept busy because of rescheduling.

The Artist Appreciation Tea held on Feb. 15 was a success with 90 people attending. Some artists were able to attend, other artists’ families appreciated the gesture and were happy to visit with the crowd. The wide variety of the baked goodies donated were also appreciated. The senior choir entertained. Thanks to Judy Woyewitka and Doreen McIntyre for organizing and to all the ladies and gents who helped make this tea a success.

Eight ladies went to the Alberta 55+ Crib Tournament held in Elk Point on Feb. 19. Two of our ladies, Marj Osinchuk and Tillie Heineman came back with a third place ribbon.

The Senior Centre was affec ted by the wind storm that caused the electrical surges. A list of the office equipment and microwave was given to ATCO but in the meantime shopping for required equipment is being done. The Centre has received their new cooler to the delight of the ladies working in the kitchen.

Other maintenance items were discussed which need to be addressed. The Building Superintendent will assist with this. We received some positive feedback in regards to the availability of sharing an existing passenger bus. Have bus, will travel!

Next meeting will be March 11, soon to be followed by the Annual Meeting, March 20.

Fennel And Cabbage Salad Fennel is a vegetable that most of us are not familiar with. Growing up I had never even tasted fennel. Recently I came across research that is making this popular Mediterranean, mildly licorice tasting vegetable so valuable that you may even want to add it to your diet. Research findings from the American Association of Cancer Research, on the substance anethole, has shown anethole to be protective in lung, liver and colon cancer in animals, in which scientists were trying to chemically induce cancer. Anethole is antiinflammatory, and interferes with cancer cells being able to form. It also appears

to protect cells from chemical damage.

Fennel contains significant amounts of anethole as well as the antioxidant vitamin C, quercitin, fiber, potassium, molybdenum, manganese, calcium, folate and iron among other nutrients.

Fennel is not recommended for pregnant women to consume because fennel is known to stimulate the uterus.

This salad combines the benefits of both cabbage and fennel with the added bonus of vitamin A from the carrots. Recent research has shown that compounds in cabbage are converted to isothiocyanates that provide protection in our bodies from breast, bladder, prostate and colon cancer. A study at the University of Otago in New Zealand has found that the isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetable such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can even cause cancer cells to destruct. A study in

Poland found that women that consumed four servings a week of cabbage had significantly lower breast cancer rates than women who consumed only one serving a week. Regularly eating raw or lightly steamed cabbage helps lower cholesterol. Cabbage is rich in antioxidants and exhibits anti inflammatory properties in our bodies. Cabbage juice aids in the healing of stomach ulcers and both cabbage and fennel improves digestive health. While we don’t usually think of cabbage as a source of vitamin C, it is interesting to note that one cup of cabbage provides 50 per cent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C and 91 per cent of DRV of vitamin K. Amazingly cabbage also has omega three in the form of alpha linolenic acid.

Both cabbage and fennel score low on the glycemic index and is a good choice to prevent blood sugar spikes. Cabbage

has only 33 calories per cup, making it a perfect diet food that is packed with healthy vitamins. Red cabbage is a nutrient powerhouse with six to eight times more antioxidant abilities than green cabbage. For this salad I grate the bulb and part of the stalk as need to make up the two cups.

Fennel and Cabbage Salad 4 cups green and red cabbage chopped finely or grated 2 cups grated fennel bulb and stalk 2 grated carrots 2 tablespoons chopped red or sweet onion Dressing 3/4 cup salad dressing or olive oil mayonnaise Combine the cabbage, fennel, carrots and onion in a large bowl. Stir in the mayonnaise.

Mixed Up Submitted There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meaning than any other twoletter word, and that is “UP.” It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we waken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends, we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has real

special meaning: People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable of the proper uses of UP, look UP the word in the dictionary.

In a desk size dictionary, UP takes UP almost a quarter of the page and definitions add UP to about thirty.

If you are UP to it, you might try building a UP list, a list of the many ways UP is used.

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a

Olympic Torch On Display At The Voice Karen Nedzielski Reporter The Lakeland Rowing Club is holding a fundraising auction of an iconic 2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch.

T h e n o n-p rof i t o rg a n iz ati o n i s looking to build a boat house to shelter the group’s equipment, as they have suffered damage from Mother Nature’s elements including the 2010 hail storms which hit the Vermilion area, causing damage to homes, yards and vehicles.

The torch itself was donated by a

person who, at this time, wishes to remain anonymous but felt it would go to a good cause.

The torch has been making visits to some of the businesses in the area and The Vermilion Voice is where it will be on display all this week.

We encourage everyone to stop by and see the torch and place your bids.

The starting bid was set at $1,000 and each week the current bid status will be updated.

The next stop for the torch is Lakeland College where it will be on display from March 3 - 7.

Arena Zamboni Beyond Repair Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Vermilion Arena Zamboni is in need of major repairs which may not be cost effective and the Town may be looking at replacing the machine a year ahead of schedule.

The 1998 model Zamboni was originally scheduled for replacement in 2016 but was bumped up after concerns with its age, potential failure and repair costs.

The Parks, Recreation and Culture

board of Vermilion reviewed a few options and have also had a complete evaluation

by Industrial Machines from Edmonton and of all the options researched, the committee felt the best course of action would be to replace the aging machine.

The facility currently has a rental machine from Industrial Machines which will be used for the remainder of the season.

The cost of replacing the Zamboni is estimated at $111,000 minus approximately $5,000 to $7,000 for the trade-in value of the older machine. If a machine is

purchased from Industial Machines, 80 per cent of the rental fee would be applied to the cost of the new machine.

A more costly electric machine was looked at for the fact that it was very efficient to operate per day. The estimate for that machine was approximately $150,000 minus a $10,000 trade-in.

At the end of 2014, the Town of Vermilion will have $76,000 set aside for the replacement of the Zamboni and in the proposal to council, it would take approximately one year from order day to build the new machine.

Shawn Bell, Community Service Director for the Town of Vermilion, said the Town could apply for a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) Grant for the new machine and if approved, could receive funding for approximately half of the project.

Members of Council moved a motion to set aside $60,000 from its reserves for the replacement of the arena Zamboni.

The Town would apply for the CFEP Grant in hopes of covering the cost for the machine.

Town Strikes Lease Deal With Doctors Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Over the past few months Town of Vermilion Manager Dion Pollard, has been working with the physicians at the Midtown Medical Clinic to draft a Lease Agreement that will be encompassing regarding the staffing, use of supplies, facility costs, overhead costs in general, and liability insurance.

At the previous Town Council meeting members asked Pollard to look at including a business interruption clause in the case of fire or such elements which may render the building temporarily unusable.

Another concern was obtaining a damage deposit from the leasers, for upon the departure of a physician, and the facil-

ity requiring repairs, painting or replacement of clinic items. Pollard expressed that obtaining a first month’s rent along with a damage deposit, totaling $13,000 might be a difficult payment to come up with for the incoming doctors.

Council asked Pollard if he could possibly work out a pay schedule for the damage deposit over the course of a few months.

Upon reviewing agreements from other Medical Clinics, both parties involved finalized a draft that Pollard said appeared to be satisfactory with the physicians.

One major concerns with retaining physicians in Vermilion is the operational costs associated with operating the clinic.

Since the Town assumed operations, the costs have been averaging in the range of $18,000 to $22,000 per month of which at this time physicians have been paying

the associated costs.

In 2013 the Town of Vermilion approved physicians not be charged any more than $6,500 per month until new physicians were recruited and the physicians were extremely appreciative of the decision.

Pollard’s proposal to Council stated the physicians were satisfied with the staffing and overall quality of the clinic the Town is providing to their businesses.

The most outstanding issue in terms of costs is the monthly overhead the physicians receive on a per-month basis.

Currently the Town sends an invoice each month which outlines the monthly costs associated however, it is time consuming and not consistent from month to month.

The proposal to Council stated both the Town and physicians would both like to have the amount of overhead costs at a set

rate so they can plan accordingly with the Town’s goal to break even on the operations of the clinic, at the very least.

With a new physician proposed to start mid to late 2014, Pollard proposed the Town’s costs are a little bit lower in the first half of the year to make it affordable for the physicians and will remain consistent throughout the entire year once a fourth physicians is working out of the clinic, which he said will assist in making up the costs lost early in 2014.

Council members moved to accept the proposed lease agreement with the amendment to have Pollard negotiate a damage deposit suitable to both parties involved.

Altex Energy Gets Town Council’s Support Karen Nedzielski Reporter

With the second proposed site within the County of Vermilion River for oil transportation company, Altex Energy, the Town of Vermilion has once again thrown their support behind the company and voted to offer a letter of support as Altex attempts to now set up shop west of Vermilion.

Althou gh Altex En ergy has not

requested the letter, Town of Vermilion Council members voted to provide the company with its formal support of the second proposed site.

The first proposed site, east of Vermilion, was turned down by County of Vermilion River Council last month following a Public Hearing which had a number of area residents step forward with their concerns for the site location.

The second proposed site is located approximately six miles west of Vermil-

ion between Range Roads 74 and 75, just north of Highway 16.

The Voice contacted Randy Meyer, Vice-President Business Development and Logistics with Altex Energy, who said their company provides the safe transportation of oil products via railcars. When Altex started looking for a site for the proposed oil to railcar facility, he said Vermilion was one of the first places Altex looked at.

Meyer said that approximately 12 adjacent landowners have already been

contacted and have been provided information packages regarding the proposed facility.

Meyer added that if the second proposed site is turned down, Altex Energy will most likely look for a facility site outside the County of Vermilion River.

A Public Hearing for the matter is scheduled for Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

Local News Mayor Officially Declares Pink Day

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Town of Vermilion Council Chambers, Pink Day 2014 was officially declared. Vermilion Is Being Empowered (VIBE) had a contest where students designed logos for t-shirts and hoodies.

Marauder Curlers Move On To Zones The Captain Hook Crew sold Candy Grams during the week of Feb. 10 to 14 and were distributed after lunch on Valentine’s Day to both ye olde Sea Dogs and the Lassies. Students seemed very excited to see each other’s faces when they were delivered. The Pirate Crews next event is a Twin Day on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Students and staff are encouraged to do their dress and do their hair like a friend.

Shiver Me Timbers! On the weekend of Feb. 7 - 8, the Senior Girls Basketball team gave more than the ol’ heave ho, they won GOLD! The team beat Cold Lake High School in their first game, and then Athabasca High school in the semi-finals.

They did it again against Assumption high school in the gold medal game. Congrat-

ulations to Erin Lychak, Erin Ray, Jesse Axely, Julia McKimmon, Nicole Narwot, Nicole Frankiw, Trisha Mead and Trista Throndson. The girls have clearly proven that teamwork and dedication pay off!

The Marauders Sr. Boys and Girls basketball teams held their V-DAY classic basketball tournament this past weekend. Both teams played very well with the boys finishing second and the girls finishing fourth. Thanks to all the parents, staff, students, and volunteers who made the tournament possible. Thanks also to Remax Prairie Reality, Apple Drugs, Boston Pizza, and Subway for their generous sponsorship of the event! The Girls Team are heading to Lashburn on Wednesday, Feb. 25 for an exhibition game.

Curling Zones took place in St. Paul on Feb 21 - 22. All three teams have qualified to move on to Zones. The Mixed team

won all three games and were undefeated.

Mrs. Baker and the Grade 11 Language Arts class is off to see Deathtrap at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre in Edmonton on March 19. On April 16, the Grade 10 class have the opportunity to see Romeo and Juliet at the Citadel. Permission slips and payment are due by March 14. An Afternoon With The Red Hatters

Christine Smith, Coordinator for the Vermilion Valley Lodge, had the Red Hatters in on Feb. 20 serving homemade treats, coffee and tea to the residents.

They also did some singing and a hilarious skit.

Everyone enjoyed themselves visiting and very much appreciated the ladies coming in for the afternoon.

For those of you who don’t know who the Red Hatters are, they are a retired group of very nice ladies who do what they please. They wear red hats and purple clothes and if it’s their birthday month they wear it the other way around.

Stealth, concentration and anticipation were all part and parcel of the herd of camouflaged staff and students that trekked the trails of Dewberry School last week. One would have thought they were at the offices of the Duck Commander Company as disguised hunters paraded

into their classrooms clad in green and black, some even holding plastic Tupperware cups that would make Si Robertson proud! While they pursued knowledge of literary devices and stalked subtraction of decimals and whole numbers they still had time to come out of their blinds and enjoy the excitement of the Canadian women’s hockey team win of an Olympic gold medal!

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted 60 Minute Kids Club A Success At VES Our AR Assembly took place on Feb. 19. As of that date, VES students had 9,100 total points from AR. Webb attended sessions focused on student engagement, physical activity, student mental health, healthy eating, and staff wellness, to name a few. They networked with other schools and specialists, bringing back with them many fun and exciting ideas that we will be seeing at our school in the near future.

The 60 Minute Kids Club has been g oin g ver y well. Lot s of kids a n d adults have been tracking their food and water intake, sleep habits, exercise, and screen habits. VES is ranked fifth in Alberta and twelfth in Canada.

Mannville’s Class of 2012 Donate uniforms The senior high mixed team consisting of Brandon Lyster, Andrea Bury, Karlee Melnyk and Davin Charron along with coach Mrs. Tara Tod, travelled to Lloydminster and competed in the District 2 playoffs in Lloydminster on Thursday, Feb. 13. Their first game against J.R. Robson was a close one, with a loss by one point in an extra end. The team’s second game was an easy win against Lloydminster Composite High School. The third game of the day was against Holy Rosary High

School where they were defeated. As a result, Mannville School Senior Mixed Curling team will be one of the four teams that moved on to compete in zone playoffs in St. Paul.

Elementary students will have an afternoon with Steve Harmer, a magician from Calgary who uses magic and entertainment to motivate and inspire students. In his show, students will learn that being a hero means to help, encourage , respect and put others first.

Miss Cusack’s Grade 5 class READ, and SCORED! They scored tickets to the Feb. 26 Oil Kings game against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Each student in Grade 5 had to achieve a reading goal for the month

in order to be entered into a draw. We are proud of them for achieving the goal.

Our school was fortunate to receive uniforms donated by the Graduating Class of 2012. The uniforms are “top-notch” and were embroidered to recognize the grad class, “Donated by the Graduating Class of 2012”. Not only did this class purchase the uniforms but they also contributed a substantial amount of money to the Village of Mannville targeted to assist with the Cenotaph restoration costs.

“The Once” Will Make A Stop In Vermilion Karen Nedzielski Reporter

“The O nce” musical trio will b e making a visit to Vermilion’s Legion Hall on Saturday, March 2, hosted by the Vermilion Folk Club.

The three members of the group are Geraldine Hollett, Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale who combine their voices to produce a soulful, Newfoundland sound. The three actors turned musicians music comes from a different

east coast style, leaving the pub and dock high energy sounds to a more “quieter and thoughtful place.”

The trio has toured throughout Canada and Europe and the Folk Club was lucky enough to snag them for a performance on their way through western Canada.

“The Once” has won several East Coast music and Canadian Folk Music Awards and are sure to enter tain ticket holders for the Vermilion show.

Those members that attended the district dance in Innisf ree on Jan. 18 had a great time. It was a “Western” theme, complete with decorations. We’d like to thank the volunteers that put the dance on for us.

OBITUARY / THANK YOU

Alice McNamara, long time resident of the Landonville district, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2014 in the Wainwright Long Term Care Centre at the age of 96.

She was predeceased by her husband Everett in 1988. Left to mourn her passing are her children Dora (John) Feenstra, Wayne (Joyce) McNamara, six grandchildren , twelve great grandchildren, two great, great grandchildren, her sister Susan Goad, and many friends and relatives in the Vermilion, Clandonald and Landonville communities. Her funeral took place on Monday , February 10, 2014 at St. Savior’s Anglican church in Vermilion with interment in the Landonville cementery.

The family would like to thank the Clandonald ladies for providing and serving the lunch, and also extend thanks to Candace and staff of the Lakeland funeral home, and Reverend Marsh for their kind care and attention during this time. We would like to thank all the men who did all the work at the Cemetery, snow plowing, and preparing the grave site. Many thanks, from Dora and John Feenstra and Wayne and Joyce McNamara, and their families.

Tigers Put Up A Good Fight Against The Bandits Angelle Lemire Reporter

The Lloydminster B andits came out strong in the first period scoring within the first three minutes of the game on Feb. 19. Strong enough that they also took the first penalty with just over eight minutes left in the first period. After a lot of pushing and shoving the Bandits goalie stopped all but one shot. The Tigers tied it up just to have the Bandits answer back with

another goal.

In the second period the Bandits played hard to secure their goals, scoring within the first five minutes of play and again with just under nine minutes left in the second period.

In front of the Bandits net with the Tigers trying hard to score, a fourman fight broke out resulting in two roughing calls for each team. The Bandits scored forcing the Tigers to switch out goalies. Just under two minutes left in second period, a fight

broke out again in front of the Bandits net, and again, both teams received two roughing calls. The second period finished with the Bandits leading 5-1.

During the second intermission the Boston Pizza Scoro came out. The young gentleman participating sunk 2 out of 3 pucks and won himself a free pizza.

Both teams came out in the third getting misconduct penalties within the first two minutes of play. The Tigers were able to get another goal with just under eight minutes left with the game. With time running out five more players were hit with penalties.

Fists were flying, the helmets and gloves came off, as Tigers’ Ethan Mohns was taken out of the game while the Bandits’ Brody Pollard was issu e d a p enalt y fo r trip pin g a n d Chris Romanchuk was handed a game m i s co n d u c t. The puck bounced off the goal post, robbing the Bandits but Lloydminster still managed to win with the final score 5-2. Shots on net were 20 for Vermilion and 29 for Lloydminster.

All funds raised went to the Mannville Minor Hockey association to help with the arena’s bleacher renovations scheduled to start this spring.

Although the Buffalo Coulee Sabres are not formally attached to the minor hockey club, they have been using the facility for their regular practises and felt it would be a great way to help with the project.

With just over 400 people in attendance, the event raised just over $7,000 for the bleacher project.

The CFCW Critters have played a total of eight games this season and have gone undefeated. The Critters have two games left to play this year, one on March 6 in Fawcett and again on March 20 in Andrew.

The Critters Goodwill hockey team have been traveling to Alberta communities for approximately 20 years raising funds for various projects totaling more than $700,000. All the funds raised stay within each of the host communities.

Lakeland College Board Chairman, Milt Wakefield, addressed the teams and Town of Vermilion Mayor Bruce MacDuff, addressed the attendees and wished them luck in the weekend tournament.

The first stone was thrown by Lakeland College’s Lindsay Makichuk. In 2010 Maki-

chuk participated in the Scott Tournament of Hearts on the Valerie Sweeting team.

With a little help from the two sweepers, Makichuk’s stone found its way to the button and the championships were officially underway.

The teams played throughout the weekend with the finals taking place on Sunday afternoon followed by the medal presentations. Check next week’s Voice for the results.

Mustang’s In Second Round Blair Macnab Submitted

O n Fr i d ay, Fe b. 14 , th e Sta n g s opened the second round at home to the Monarch’s from Neilburg.

It looked a little like Buddy had been giving his horses too much water and oats and had backed off the exercise program as the Stangs found themselves down one after just ten seconds and then another less than four minutes later. At 6:49 the Stangs kicked in one of their own only to give up another less than a minute later to be down 3-1 before the game was seven and half minutes old. They saddled and went to work and tied it up with two straight at 8:11 and 9:08 only to have the Monarch’s sneak another one at 15:50. Heading to the barn, down 4-3 after twenty, the

Stangs were uncharacteristically (big word eh!!) not in control.

Between periods Buddy must have pulled the flank straps tight as the Stangs came out kicking and firing and managed to take the second stanza by a 3-0 margin. Now up 6-4 after two and seemingly back on track.

Well…. By the 5:39 mark of the third frame the Sask boys had grabbed the Stangs halter shanks and tied them up at six a piece. The Stangs kicked loose and relaimed the lead at 8:59 and it looked like they were gonna win the race but with only 39 seconds left Neilburg tied it at 7. Oh no!! O.T. WE GO!!

In the O.T. frame the Stangs weren’t outta the barn for long when they knocked in the proverbial road apple at forty seconds for the game winner.

Devon Monetta and Badger Gold-

smith (the O.T. winner) scored single tallies while Ty Macnab, GMC Botting and Captain Kurt Bensmiller all sniped a pair in the win.

Justin Bowtell got in the way of twenty of twenty seven shots sent his way for the win.

FYI!!!!

A little something that should mean a lot. I feel compelled to share this, I know it’s a bit odd but what the heck, so am I. I have been in many, many arena’s in my lifetime and one thin g that Dewberr y can be thankful, grateful, proud of is the absolutely amazing condition the area washrooms are kept in.

Horseman Step In A Gopher Hole In Saskatchewan Sorry folks but the league stats man hasn’t had time to post the game sheet from last Sunday so this article is like one of my report cards, lacking detail.

Game two in Neilburg was a seesaw battle all the way with period ending scores of 2-2 and 5-5.

The Horseman were having trouble getting into the track for a steady pull.

Neilburg scored the lone goal of the third which was also the winner to give the Stangs their first playoff loss and only the second time this year that they showed up at the wire in second place.
