The Voice Celebrates 500th Issue

This week, Feb. 17, The Vermilion and area Voice celebrates its five hundredth issue. In a photo taken at the Town of Vermilion office, Mayor Bruce MacDuff and town manager Dion Pollard pose with The Voice publisher Sue Chikie, with the very first issue of the only locally owned and operated, free publication. In the newspaper’s humble beginnings, The Voice had a circulation of approximately 5,000 copies and has grown to more than 6,100 papers which are mailed out to residents of Vermilion and 11 other communities. This week’s issue features a number of comments from local businesses and friends of The Voice, on where we came from and where we are now. The Voice will celebrate its tenth anniversary in July of this year and will host a formal celebration for its readers and advertisers who have supported us over the years. Watch for details of that event in future issues of The Voice. See more on page 3.

With the Men’s and Ladies’ bonspiels keeping the ice makers busy, the upstairs was also busy as vendors of the trade fair displayed their various items for sale.

The Feb. 15 sale saw everything from jewelry to handmade crafts available for purchase. O’Yarn Scarves and Hoods was one of the tables set up as vendor Francine Mainguy from Sherwood Park offered her handmade scarves. Mainguy makes her fashionable scarves without the use of crochet or knitting needles.

She said she was motivated to produce the safer version of the scarves after her niece was accidentally dragged behind a vehicle from having the end of her scarf caught in the door of her bus. Photos Karen Nedzielski.

The Vermilion Voice is pleased to welcome Angelle Lemire to the team.

Angelle moved to Vermilion last July from Lloydminster with her family, boyfriend Dallas Gassner and children Annabelle and Jimmy.

Angelle was born and raised in Lloydminster and later moved to the Vancouver area to work in retail.

More recently Angelle has been a stay at home mom and now that she is joining the Voice family, she will be out and about at local events within the Vermilion area.

Theft Of Safe - Mannville UFA

Hit and Run At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 a vehicle drove through a fence located behind a residence in the 4800 block of 43rd Street in Vermilion, Alberta. The vehicle, a white Chevrolet or GMC quad or crew cab pickup truck, drove through the fence, through a shed and then drove into the garage causing significant damage to the garage as well as a vehicle parked inside. The suspect vehicle fled the scene headed south on 44th Street. The suspect vehicle should

Proceeds Of Crime - Cash Seizure On January 31, 2014 the Lloydminster Municipal R.C.M.P. arrested two subjects who were on warrant status from Lloydminster and Prince Albert. The arrest occurred at a residence in Lloydminster, AB. During the investigation, approximately $57,000 in cash was seized. A 25 year old male, Braidy Vermette, and a 26 year old female, Michelle Primeau, both of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, have been charged with Proceeds of Crime over $5,000 and Breach of Conditions. Both are scheduled to appear in Lloydminster, Alberta Provincial Court on March 18, 2014.

During February, Alberta’s Integrated Traffic Services, made up of Alberta Traffic Sheriffs and RCMP Traffic members will focus their efforts on enforcing distracted driving laws on provincial highways in order to get the message out: distracted driving can cost you more than a data package. It can result in fines or worse - it can result in a serious or fatal collision.

“Even with all this information going out, some drivers are still not getting the

message,” says Superintendent Howard Eaton, Officer-in-Charge, RCMP “K” Division Traffic Services, “We are still attending crashes caused by driver inattention and we still see people talking on the phone, texting or even watching movies.”

Eaton recalls a recent event in which Integrated Traffic members received reports of a vehicle being driven erratically during a snowstorm on the Queen Elizabeth II highway. Callers indicated the driver was watching a movie from his laptop. When police stopped the vehicle, the driver was actually watching a movie from his laptop on the dashboard.

Superintendent James Stiles of the Alberta Traffic Sheriffs agrees that the behaviour is dangerous and troubling.

“Driving is a full time responsibility. It demands all your attention, and when you give it less than your full attention, it can have devastating consequences for you and others who share the road with you.”

Integrated Traffic Units consist of RCMP Traffic Services members and Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol officers working together in a collaborative effort to deliver effective and efficient traffic safety services to Albertans, with a focus on identified enforcement priorities.

Marking A Milestone Karen Nedzielski Editor

As every year creeps along we all get just a little bit older and in some cases, somewhat wiser. For some aging can be a more difficult aspect than for others and many will drag their heels against Father Time, fighting his ticking time clock all the way.

For others who embrace the yearly celebration, it is a time to observe all the achievements of their life and look forward to what is yet to come.

Milestone birthdays like hitting the legal age to drive, enter adult establishments, or even retirement can be an exciting moment in one’s life.

This week the Vermilion and area

Voice will celebrate the 500th publication of its newspaper.

In its humble beginnings, in 2004 the Voice office was located along Railway avenue in Vermilion until moving in 2007 into its current location along Vermilion’s main street.

The Voice started out with a minimal number of staff but has maintained FREE delivery to Vermilion and 11 other communities by Canada Post as well as Free pick up at various locations.

The locally owned and operated business prides itself in covering as many events in the area as possible and including those stories in its weekly paper.

Without the support of the communities it serves, the 500th issue would have never been possible. When visiting a number of businesses over the past week, many people found it hard to

believe that we have now produced our 500th newspaper.

When the Voice first opened its doors many questioned the viability of having two papers in a smaller community.

The first 12-page publication has now grown and evolved into a very colourful, informative newspaper that appeals to readers of all ages.

Staying in business for nearly ten years is an achievement in itself as many don’t make it past their first two years in operation. The bumps and bruises along the way combined with a few growing pains can contribute to the demise of a company before it even gets off the ground.

I too, will be marking a milestone birthday next week. It will be the six month mark of my employment with The Voice and although it seems like I have been here forever, I am still meet-

ing a number of new faces as I attend the events in the community.

Although I am not really a newcomer to the area, everyone has been very welcoming and inviting. Maybe it was the wonderful Vermilion hospitality that I previously experienced many years ago.

Although The Voice is just short of the ten year anniversary, we will be holding a formal celebration this July with a customer appreciation day, to officially mark the occasion. Keep reading the Voice for those details in the coming months.

At this time The Voice would like to thank our readers and advertisers for their support over the past 500 issues and look forward to continuing to cover the events and news that matter to Vermilion and area.

Well, I had a bit of a comical weekend as my hunting partner Blaine, and I ventured forth for the first all-day ice fishing adventure of the New Year. I woke up with the sunrise to prepare as I was busy in the archery shop the night before.

Besides, in mid-winter, Blaine being part bear likes to practise his hibernating skills.

First, as I dug my gear out of the shed, I was proud of myself it was all together. I have a small four foot aluminum snow sled with a heavy duty storage bin attached permanently to the sled. The large bin doubles as a fresh water live well, an asset when I attended all the fish derbies which were strictly catch and release. The rules state that you have to half a five gallon bucket to carry the live fish.

After the first derby it didn’t take long for me to figure out that a five gallon pail full of water and a 10 lb. fish isn’t easy to carry a kilometer through knee high snow. As the fish in these fish derbies have to arrive at the weigh in station alive, great care

I would simply use the bin to carry all my gear in on the sled, then fill up the bin with water and use it as a live well. I had to use it several times. As a matter of fact I had the winning fish which brought the fishermen $20,000 dollar cash, yup-that’s twenty thousand.

But alas it wasn’t mine, I watched in horror as a youngster that pulled in a 20 lb/10 kilo Northern Pike, which was twice the length of a five gallon pail. He couldn’t make it four or five steps and the fish was falling out of the pail. The youngster was exhausted as he tried to get the fish to the weigh in station, so I grabbed my sled and live well and helped him out. The fish was in bad shape so it was a good thing.

There was four thousand people at that fish derby spread out over a 3Km by 3km area, but the young man found me and returned my sled and live well with gratitude after his weigh in.

Just out of high school the young man was paying his own way through college, so when he won the $20,000 first prize, I felt pretty good about helping him out, and hey…I could say I had the $20,000 fish in my sled.

the ice auger to drill the holes, it quit after not being used for a year and cold she was stubborn.

That took everything the two of us could manage and another half hour to cut just two holes, which is usually done in only minutes, but soon we were comfortably sitting in a warm ice shack ready to fish.

By now it was late afternoon but we still had a couple hours of the best fishing time left, as we closed the doors in excitement. It gets very dark, almost black inside, and we can see down the ice holes very clearly.

I stared down into the clear water and could now see bottom, “Dohh” there directly on the bottom was a nice trout, deceased. Oh no, the pond winter killed.

We stared into the holes for an hour and a half and nothing moved, no fish, not even the normal aquatic critters like fresh water shrimp. No fresh fish fry for us tonight.

When the Smoke Clears We had no choice but to giggle on the way the day went, and simply enjoy the rest of the day, evening and adventure; still a success since we were outdoors and in good company.

“Dohh”, I had forgotten to take all the fish bait out of the bin after last year’s small fishing derby. The package of bait fish was now nothing but shreds, chewed up by a resourceful mouse.

He also somehow got the lid off a jar of flavoured marshmallows I use for trout bait, and cleaned that out.

Everything was shredded, along with fishing lines on the ice fishing rods.

Everything was a tangled mess, that little fellow must have had a party in there. Well that took almost two hours to straighten and clean up.

When Blaine showed up we pulled up to the barn to get my fold-up ice fishing shack and I grabbed the two main wooden poles that hold the walls up and jokingly said “I got my part”.

Blaine tried to move the ice shack but said he couldn’t even move it, Ice had formed all around it on the concrete floor and we had to spend another hour chipping it out of the ice, I explained in my defense “Well…it is an ice shack”.

We dama ged som e of th e black tarp material side walls in our haste but soon we were on our way and on the ice, as we went to set up the ice shack…another “Dohh”…Einstein here forgot the poles by the barn door.

But with a little outdoor knowledge I crafted one good ridge pole out of a dead tree nearby. Then, as we used

Altex Energy is once again proposing an Oil-To-Railcar loading facility within the County of Vermilion River, just west of Vermilion along Range Road 75 and Township 505.

The request by Altex was filed with the County for re-designation of 155

acres of land from agricultural use to industrial. This request comes less than a month af ter the County of Vermilion River Council voted down the second and third readings of a proposed bylaw following an outcry from area resident s of th e o riginal proposed site, which was to be located just east of town.

At the County Council meeting on Feb. 11, 21 days later, Council moved to hold a public hearing to allow the ratepayers in the proposed area a chance to voice their concerns.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the Vermilion Regional Centre to hear from concerned ratepayers and all involved parties.

The purpose of the proposed bylaw is to amend the County of Vermilion River Land Use Bylaw No. 13-14 as follows: 1. The Land Use District Map, Section 10.1, is hereby mended by changing the District Classification of a Portion of N ½-29-50-7-W4 from Agricultural (A) District to Industrial (M) District, as shown on Schedule “A” below.

Submissions may be made by any person(s) who claim(s) to be affected by the proposed bylaw or from any other person whom Council agrees to hear. Any written submissions that are mailed or delivered to the County of Vermilion River, Box 69, Kitscoty, AB T0B 2P0 or faxed to 780-846-2716 by 12:00 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 will be included in the agenda package, and should be marked to include the Bylaw number. Written and oral submissions may be made at the Public Hearing without prior notification to the County of Vermilion River.

A copy of written submissions must be provided to the County of Vermilion River at the Public Hearing. Written submissions will become part of the public record and, as such, will be subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A Grist Haven Lodge Adventure Franklin Wolters Columnist

This adventure started with me getting to own my Taylor craft way back in the 1970’s.

Shortly thereafter I saw an ad in the local paper that told of an aircraft maintenance course that would help you look after your craft and even show you how to do minor repairs on fabric covered older aircraft. That fitted mine exactly.

Soon I was treading the halls of Lakeland College and meeting Dick York, who was to be our instructor. Now Dick had talents for almost anything to do with an airplane and then some. On the course of the studies about aircraft maintenance and all its mysteries, Dick informed us he had a fly in lodge on Grist Lake.

What an intriguing idea that hatched in our minds on learning that, as we talked between courses and coffee breaks.

I learned he had beaver invading the

area around his lodge and the idea that formed was I’d bring my big Labrador retriever up to his lodge and help him try to solve that problem. Sounded like fun!

Dick called me in the spring just after ice out and informed me he was flying into his lodge in the early morning and he wanted me there so we could spend a longer day getting his camp ready for the spring Walleye fishing. About three o’clock in the morning I had my car loaded up and calling my dog, we started off for Cold Lake. Wouldn’t you know when we got there Dick was still in the party mode and hadn’t gone to bed yet.

The first thing I knew we were cooking steaks and telling fishing flying stories, you’d have to have known Dick to understand! Dick’s plane was a robust Cessna 180 with floats and it was sitting in a bay on Cold Lake near his home. After delays taking up most of the morning the reason being I think, that Dick needed time to sober up. Seemed prudent!!

The Vermilion Rock hockey team played in their first playoff game of the season on Feb. 12 at the Vermilion Stadium where they squared off against the Neilburg Monarchs.

The scoring started early with the Rock sinking two goals past the Monarchs’ goalie at the 16 and 14 minute mark, making it a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

Late in the second, Neilburg answered back by scoring a goal with five minutes left of play in the second period.

Neilburg came out strong in the third period to tie the game in the first 30

seconds of play making it a 2-2 game. Not to be outdone, Vermilion answered back by scoring a goal less than a minute later.

Once again, Neilbourg scored tying the game at three a piece.

With just under seven minutes left in the game, Neilburg’s Dustin Mullett and Vermilion’s Calvin Ireland dropped the gloves which sent both of them to the penalty box for roughing.

Neilburg would score the go-ahead goal with 2:48 left in play making it a win for the away team, 4-3.

Neilburg’s shots on goal surpassed Vermilion’s, 34-23.

A second playoff game took place on Feb. 14.

checked everything out. The little planes area behind the seat was piled high with groceries, outboard motors, life jackets etc. right to the ceiling. I wondered about the dog riding in the plane, but Dick said he would just go to sleep as soon as we were airborne. I wasn’t so sure, but once the engine was started and I got aboard “Old Mike” just jumped up over me and landed up on top of the life jackets. I talked to him and he snuggled down and by the time we were airborne he was snoring away.

Soon Grist Lake was on the horizon but the little lake was ice bound except for a small bay that could be accessed

by Jeep. We spent the night at the lodge and next morning planes started to bring in fishermen, we had to get the Winifred Lake tent camp set up. I spent the next several days packing bags and gear and flying into a small open area, actually a river mouth on Winifred. It was an education watching Dick take off from a small patch of water and land on an even

smaller one. He handled a float plane like a surgeon with a scalpel. After the weekend of fishing and people coming and going I never even got close to trying to harvest beaver. Dick told me that later in the summer I was welcome to come and spend a week at the lodge.

Sure enough Trevor and I flew up to the airstrip on Grist Lake and with the help of my “Lowrance” fish finder, we solved the mystery of the resident lake trout and caught several, the first I had ever seen. Later Dick drove us over to Winifred with his Jeep and we fished that beautiful lake for some of the biggest Walleyes and Northern Pike I’ve been privileged to catch. We even got caught in a rain storm and had to spend a night in a cabin owned by a character of the north called “Freddie the Trapper”.That was a story all on its own. Just another wonderful memory I have filed away in the store of so many. Hope I can live long enough to experience some new ones.

The Heart Of A Valentine Kid Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

Ever y thin g I remember about my earliest birthdays is about hearts. My birthday cakes were heart-shaped. The decorations on the icing consisted of red flowers augmented with those little red cinnamon hearts. My most likely attire was a red velvet (usually ill-fitting) homemade dress. My hair? Semicombed with a couple of heart-shaped barrettes holding back my mottled straw mop. I think various people, none with any professional training, practised cutting my hair when I was a kid. Photographs don’t lie.

My birthday has always brought about mixed feelings. In a way, having a Valentine’s Day birthday feels special, at least it did when I was young. People made it

a big deal. Even the neighbour woman used to make or bring me gifts. Heartshaped heart themes for every birthday.

Even now, no one I know tends to forget my birthday, unless they do it purposely.

If you can think past the scar left by Al Capone on it, Valentine’s Day is mostly a positive, practise your kindness, loveeverybody kind of day.

On the dark side, Valentine’s Day can connote guilt and harried pressure.

Enter big ‘C’ - Commercialism. It’s what my brother-in-law would call another ‘Hallmark’ day. It presents a challenge to ‘prove’ how much you care by showering your partner or just someone significant, with sparkling, sweet, and/or expensive gifts. You’ve seen the ads. In the sentimental words of a woman I once worked with, “I better get a dozen red roses, or else!” True love expectation was never expressed so cogently.

It seems sometimes that I’ve been working for a lifetime at not being embarrassed by my birth date. Why embarrassed? I can’t say precisely. Maybe it stems from some long forgotten incident that occurred during the self-conscious years of adolescence. Maybe buried deep in the basement of my subconscious there lay remnants of a nightmare wherein I was stuck in an oversized heart costume and couldn’t get out. Some things defy rational explanation.

Now, finally, I think a Valentine birthday is mostly just a birthday. You’ve got to be born sometime, right? Like many people aware that immortality is myth, I’m just pleased that I still have this birthday thing to celebrate. Or ignore, as the case may be.

I’m grateful too, that my parents opted to gift me this more ordinary name over what apparently was actually a serious

contender. I’m glad I am not Valentina (the Valentine).

Can I offer some unsolicited advice?

Thanks. It’s alright if you didn’t spend your entire pay cheque or take out a loan to buy a sparkly thing at the jewellery store to prove to anyone that your love is big and true. I say it’s not about that. But Valentine’s Day is a perfect day to reflect upon the concept of love and maybe endeavour to include a little more expression of it in your life. On your own terms, and in whatever way you chose.

Next Valentine’s Day, if you happen to see me wandering around wearing a heart-shaped, messed up velvet dress, just shout out a hearty Happy Birthday and never mind the rest. I’ll maybe flip you a couple of those perfectly shiny red cinnamon you-know-what shapes from my stash. Remember, in whatever you do, keep love in mind.

Clandonald May Soon See Affordable Senior Housing Karen Nedzielski Reporter

With a little help from the County of Vermilion River, Clandonald may soon have plans underway for a new seniors living facility.

In a presentation to members of Council, Clandonald Agricultural Society President Ron Harusuik, said he is concerned with the lack of housing options for area seniors who require living assistance.

Harusuik told council that many of the Clandonald seniors are forced to leave the community to find accommodations outside of their hometown area. Harusuik said he is hopeful that something can be done to correct this problem.

In the document submitted the Clandonald Ag Society to County Council, it said the seniors play an integral role in thier community by volunteering in the various organizations and within the school.

moving back to the community and so the need for affordable senior housing is greater than ever.

Harusuik was born, raised, went to school and attends church in Clandonald and plans to retire within the community. He said this may not be possible if the planning does not get started soon.

The community has seen a new structure in the hamlet which will offer a new grocery store, restaurant and catering business which Harusuik said, may look at offering meals on wheels if there was a

need within the community.

The affordable senior housing idea for Clandonald is still in the early planning stage which is why the community is reaching out to the County for direction on how to start the process. The community is hoping to start with a four unit complex with consideration of more units to follow.

Council moved to work with the Clandonald Ag Society to help provide assistance with accessing funding and information avenues as well as possible grant applications.

Crepes After a large meal at a recent family get together, the sisters and sisters in-law all ended up sitting around the kitchen table, visiting. The talk turned to a similar interest, which is cooking. My new sister in-law from the city was perplexed by the art of cooking, expressing that she had missed out since her mother was a very basic cook, and things that she, herself had tried to cook, had not turned out as well as she had hoped.

The discussion then became one of sharing how we had learned to cook, some of us learning from our mothers, aunts, babas or grandmothers, and how the methods and recipes were passed down. We shared that a good recipe is paramount to success. There are many recipes on the internet or in cookbooks, but they do not always produce successful results. Lack of successful results is not the only thing that deters a cooking passion.

I remember when I was young, cooking was exciting, and then as I entered a different stage of my life where, sadly,

cooking became more of a daily chore.

Let’s just say the glow had worn off the pot. I remember thinking, of the endless meals that were left in my lifetime to cook and clean up after, and what an awful waste of time it all would be, and besides I was having a hard time coming up with ideas of what to cook.

Writers have writers block, and I was definitely having an extended “cooking block” at that time. Thankfully, while trying to come up with something to cook for supper, I came across an article in a back issue of Gourmet Magazine on the ideology behind French cooking. It was like throwing gasoline on the fading embers.

The use of seasonal, locally available simple and nutritious ingredients combined with really good time proven recipes, enjoyed casually with family or friends painted a truer picture of the art, structure and greater calling of cooking.

Forget the recipe with exotic ingredients that cannot even be found in any store in the Lloydminster and Vermilion area.

I prefer to focus on recipes which use regionally available ingredients. Enjoying good home cooked food is great, but sharing it with people you care about, is truly one of the most significant aspects

of food. Some of the very best times with family or friends have been spent around our dining table. That has been my gasoline.

Thanks to acclaimed French chef Julia Child for this wonderful crepe recipe that you may enjoy sharing with your family or friends. Crepes can be filled with sweet or savory fillings. Her recipe is a favorite of mine that I have made many times because it is always successful and so easy to make in a blender.

For dessert crepes, fill with fruit and freshly whipped cream that has been sweetened with a bit of sugar and flavoured with a teaspoon of vanilla.

Place the whipped cream and fruit or berries down the middle of the crepe.

Roll the crepe over the filling. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and a piece of chosen fruit.

Great fruits to use are strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches or bananas. I also do a filling of sautéing three chopped apples in butter until softened with 4 teaspoons brown sugar and cinnamon to taste. Depending on the type of apple you use you may prefer more sugar. I like using the red delicious apple with the skin on,

(core removed) as this apple heats well without falling apart. The apple filling can be served warm or cooled, rolled in the middle of the crepe, garnished with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon for a lovely winter crepe for dessert or brunch.

Julia Child’s Master Crepe Recipe 1 cup flour 2/3 cup cold milk 2/3 cup cold water 3 large eggs 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons melted butter plus more for brushing on the pan.

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Heat a non-stick or stainless frying pan over medium heat; I use the four setting on an electric stove. When the pan has heated for a few minutes add the butter and let it melt and heat until there is slight white foam. Pour three tablespoon of batter onto the middle of the hot pan and rotate the pan to spread the batter out into a larger circle. Cook about one minute or until slightly brown, flip and cook on the other side about 5-10 seconds. Use additional butter in the pan as needed.

Benoit Supports Motion Condemning Ukraine’s Anti-Protest Laws Leon Benoit, MP Submitted

Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, strongly supports the motion condemning the Ukrainian government for its actions and the anti-protest laws deemed by observers to be anti-democratic which was unanimously approved by the House of Commons on January 27th 2013 following an emergency debate*. “This government condemns the draconian law that was adopted in Ukraine on January 17, 2014 that severely limits the right of Ukrainians

to peacefully organize, assemble or protest,” stated Benoit. “Canadian Parliamentarians have made it clear we consider this to be completely unacceptable.”

The Motion** also emphasizes that the recent laws undermine the freedom and democracy in Ukraine. “As I stated in the House of Commons in November, constituents in Vegreville-Wainwright are concerned that what is happening in Ukraine may be the star t of a movement to an expansion on the part of Russia to a new Soviet-style regime,” explained Benoit.

Clandonald School News Clandonal School Submitted Clandonald School Celebrates Winter The Clandonald School Winter Carnival kicked off with a noon hour wiener roast with hot chocolate and other treats sponsored by the Clandonald Agricultural Society. Following the lunch break students enjoyed winter activities organized by the junior high leadership class. Broomball and milk jug curling took place in the Chrome Dome and street hockey and toboggan races on the school grounds.

The support that the community has shown Preschool is tremendous and without the generosity of so many, this program would not be possible.

At this time, Preschool runs on fundraising and donations so if there is any group or individuals who are looking for a group to assist please keep our organization in mind.

We would one day love to expand our program so a waiting list is not necessary.

With the electric company donating $1,500 and the gas company donating $3,500, Town of Vermilion Communities Service Director, Shawn Bell said the proposed park is that much closer to reaching the goal of $100,000. Masonic Lodge Donates To VHC Gazebo

The Vermilion Health Centre (VHC) is one step closer to making their gazebo project a realization. The Vermilion Masonic Lodge #24 in conjunction with the Masonic Foundation of Alberta presented the health centre with their donation of $1,000 to be put toward the construction of the courtyard gazebo. The proposed site for the gazebo is the outdoor common area, where the covered structure will provide a shady sitting area for patients and visitors to the hospital. Participating in the presentation from left are, Masonic secretary Aubrey Bell, member Bliss Dickson, Care Manager for long term care at VHC Kathy Beckett, Masonic Master Rex Cunningham and Recreation Therapist Darlene Dary. Vermilion Folk Club Hosts Corin Raymond Angelle Lemire Reporter

Corin Raymond took the stage this weekend for the Vermilion Folk Club at the Legion alongside Jessie D and Mosses Gray. The doors were open to the public at 7:30 p.m. and the music began at 8 p.m. The band consisted of two acoustic guitars and one electric bass.

The Voice had the pleasure of sitting down with Corin for a few minutes before the show. He explained that his inspiration for his album ‘Paper Nickles’ was from some of the best Canadian songs he had heard and some he discovered throughout the years.

It took Corin about fifteen months to save $7,333.75 of Canadian Tire money, which weighed a whopping 80 pounds, to pay for studio time in Toronto and to this day. Corin is still collecting Canadian Tire money to pay royalties to the artists of the songs. Scott Cook was the first to accept the paper coins and others followed suit.

Corin brought in a packed house with many laughs to go around as the crowd joined in, singing along to some of the tunes.

“If it’s a song you can relate to, it’s not

my fault,” said Corin, which made the crowd clap or laugh every time.

It appeared the Folk Club made a fantastic choice to bring Corin Raymond into the relaxed setting of the Vermilion Legion.

The evening ended with a standing ovation for Corin Raymond and he thanked

the audience with an encore performance, playing two new songs which he claimed, he had never played before.

Corin has many shows to come in Canada including: Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario before heading south in mid-April.

Harps Community Cash Prize Winner

The Harps Family Foods 2014 Community Cash Contest promotion has been once again running in the store. The contest included a $500 in store draw which was won by the lucky shopper Don Voltner. On Feb. 12 Voltner stopped by the store to accept his cheque in the amount of $500. Presenting the cheque are, from left, store owner Harp Khela, contest winner Don Voltner and store manager Patrick Halley. All entries are now entered into the grand prize of one cash prize of $15,000 for the winner and a $10,000 cash prize awarded to their community.

Rotary Donates Again

The Vermilion Rotary Club generously donated again. This time the Rotary came through for the Vermilion Spray Park to the tune of $25,000. Most of the proceeds came from the Harvest Gala held last fall.

The Spray Park Committee’s goal is to raise at least $100,000 from the community.

At this moment $47,000 has been received and a total of $65,000 has been committed mostly through corporate and service club contributions.

Alberta Parks and the fundraising committee are each shooting for a project completion date of May 24, 2014.

NATURAL GAS UTILITY AMR (AUTOMATED METER READING) UPDATE

Over the past few months we have utilized an aerial contractor to obtain month-end meter reads via the AMR equipment. The technical difficulties have been ironed out for the most part and we have been able to achieve a meter reading percentage of approximately 98%. Due to the success of this pilot project we will continue to obtain month-end meter reads aerially. We are pleased to advise that Customers are no longer required to provide their meter reads at month end.

The area encompasses land north of Devonia Lake and south of Big Gully Creek. The purpose in developing a functional stormwater drainage plan is to meet the servicing needs of the Blackfoot and Devonia area. This document will provide a more comprehensive plan to improve drainage for both existing and future development. The County recognizes the importance of ensuring that future development does not strain existing drainage issues within this area. Having a Functional Drainage plan in place will ensure that the County, the Developer, the Public and Environment concerns are looked at with a balanced approach.

Lodge Residents And Visitors Enjoy Valentine’s Afternoon

The Annual Valentine’s Day Tea was held at The Vermilion Valley Lodge on Feb. 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Coordinator Christine Smith had her hands full with a packed house and many more lining up at the door. Visitors to the tea paid a four dollar entry fee which entered them into the draw for door prizes as well as many other draws which included homemade items, baskets full of goodies and a life size teddy bear. All proceeds went towards benefitting activities and items for the residents of the lodge. The Red Hatters also made an appearance at the tea, enjoying their afternoon. Vermilion acknowledged the work of senior artists from the area at the annual Senior Artist Appreciation Tea held at the Vermilion Seniors Centre on Feb. 15.

The afternoon tea and social was designed to acknowledge the artists in the community who have made major contributions to the Vermilio n Senio rs Centre a n d wh o have displayed their art pieces in the building for all to enjoy.

Sports Youngest Hockey Teams Invade Vermilion Arenas

The Vermilion Minor Hockey Association hosted the Initiation tournament this past Saturday, Feb. 15 at the stadium and arena. The eight teams playing were Vermilion Apple Drugs Tigers, Vermilion ATB Financial Tigers, Leduc Roughnecks, Lloydminster Elite Homes, Lloydminster Northern Blizzard, Mannville Initiation Hawks, Consort Comets and the Kitscoty Storm. Vermilion played host to the senior boys and girls basketball teams on Feb.14 and Feb.15. Games were held at both J.R. Robson and St. Jerome’s schools. Action for the V Day Classic started Feb. 14 at 12:45 p.m. and continued through to Feb. 15 with Championship games starting at 7:30 p.m. Senior girls teams participating in the tournament included Vermilion’s St. Jerome’s and J.R. Robson as well as Delburne, Vegreville, Ashmont, Lloydminster, Paradise Valley and Marwayne. The senior boys teams consisted of J.R. Rock’s Eric Fadden Named Most Sportsmanlike Player

Vermilion Rock forward Eric Fadden received the SaskAlta Hockey League award for Most Sportsmanlike Player for the 2013 – 2014 season. This award is given to a player that exemplifies dedication, hard work, respect for teammates and opponents while playing with a level of skill. This award is voted on by the coaches and managers of the league. Fadden recorded 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 17 games and zero penalty minutes during the regular season. Vermilion Curling Rink Hosts Men’s And Ladies’ Bonspiel

The sheets of ice at the Vermilion Curling rink heated up with the Men’s and Ladies’ Bonspiels getting under way on Friday, Feb. 14. Although the number of teams seemed slightly down from previous bonspiels, 16 men’s teams squared off in hopes of claiming the title. The ladies’ event had 5 teams participate in the round robin style bonspiel with each matchup featuring a 6-end game. Dewberry School Susanna Pankiw Submitted

Aflame With Pride As Sochi prepared to host the opening ceremonies of the XXII Winter Olympics, the staff and students of Dewberry School held their own celebration. The hallways were rivers of red and white, flowing with pride and anticipation of the excitement and competition to come. Bulletin boards were adorned with student artwork of the Olympic rings and symbols of the various events. The excitement will not end there, throughout the coming weeks the Grade 4/5/6 students will be their official medal record keepers.

The colors of the five Olympic rings are said to represent all nations. Dewberry Panthers may not have rings, but they definitely shine with an array of colors that represent their individual teams, and when brought to the challenge only two colors tie them together: red and black!

One cannot forget the importance of the Alberta Winter Games! This year Dewberry School anxiously awaited news from the icy ponds of Canmore, where their own, Kyra Weidmark represented the Lloydminster Border Blades in speed skating (1500m, 3000m, 400m, and relays).

Kyra, along with her relay teammates, succeeded in bringing home a silver medal.

The Olympic creed: The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well. Triumph and fight maybe only words to some but to the staff and students at Dewberry School they are the end result of the lessons learned while striving for personal excellence.

Like the intertwined rings, the guidance and support that they give to each other adds to the experience and the realization of dreams, where everyone gives their Olympic best.

It is amazing to see each February 14 the beautiful young ladies and handsome young men we have at St. Jerome’s as many of them dressed up for Formal Day and Valentine’s Day. The elementary students enjoyed passing out Valentine’s, sharing treats, playing games or going skating out on the town rink.

DIRECTOR ELECTIONS

On Wednesday, February 12 the Grade one’s celebrated the Hundredth day of school. They made 100-day crowns and spent the day sharing their 100-day projects. They also completed many activities that had them counting to 100 during the day including sharing 100 treats, doing 100 jumping jacks, and reading 100 day books.

On Thursday, February 13, we gathered as a school community to celebrate monthly mass. The Grade 6/7 choir did a fabulous job leading the singing and thank you to the Grade 11 students for the doing the readings, intentions, and gifts. Father Roger reminded us that God loved us so much that He gave his only son to die for our sins. God also gave us the freedom to love Him and to love others. During this month of February, Father encouraged us to choose love each day.

On Friday, February 7 the elementary

students had lots of fun going from station to station participating in a variety of fun “Olympic” activities. Thank you to the Grade 10 leadership students for helping out at the stations and assisting the students.

The Jr. High Girls Basketball team played the Marwayne Wildcats this past week.

They had a very exciting game and were able to defeat the Wildcats, 32-22. Both the Sr. Boys and Girls Basketball teams participated in the J. R. Robson tournament this past weekend.

The Grade 10 Leadership class is looking for donations to their annual Carnival fundraiser. They are looking for canned food items for the Sr. Hoopla. They are also looking for small toys, books, and jewelry for the Fish Pond and Jr. Hoopla. Donations to the Silent Auction would also be greatly appreciated. If you have any items please drop them off at the school office.

Mannville School Sports Heat Up The Cold Weather On Tuesday, Feb. 11 Mrs. Campbell’s Grade 3 class held a successful cupcake fundraiser earning $195. With these profits, they then selected items from the World Vision gift catalogue to help needy families around the world. They voted to purchase one goat, five fruit trees, and medicine for the children and water filters. The students are learning to be good global citizens in social studies class. Special thanks to our parent helpers Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Jackson, and Mr. Dalton, for coming in and helping the students ice, decorate and sell the cupcakes.

Dress-Up Day + Olympics = Canada / Red and White! Let’s see if everyone in the school can wear a little red and white on Thursday, Feb. 20 for our Dress Up Day. It’s also popcorn day.

The Grade 1/2 class is off to their own

Olympics for the next few weeks in Physical Education class! They are all looking forward to trying out some of the Olympic events in their class!

The Grade 3/4 Phys. Ed. Class has just finished a Basketball unit. Students learned skills such as chest and bounce pass, proper shooting form, and dribbling.

They played many games to acquire these skills and even tried some real basketball games. Students improved greatly throughout the unit and now know the basic rules for the game of basketball. Their next unit is focusing on team games and working together. They will play games such as soccer and dodge ball, and engage in team building and problem solving activities.

Phys Ed 5 and 6 just finished their basketball unit, and now the elementary intramural kids are playing Ultimate Basketball for fun! The new unit is Tumbling and Combatives, with an Olympics component added as a twist. Sounds like lots of exercise for the students!

Mannville School curling teams are off to a roaring start to the playoff season. Two teams competed in the North BTPS Junior High curling playoffs in Innisfree on Feb. 6. The Grade 9 team consisting of Carter Babij, Breanne Hryhirchuk, Marty Jackson, and Nelson Shubert took gold, while our Grade 7 team consisting of

Kayle Tod, Zach Polishuk, Justin Kane and Max Amero took fourth place. Both teams moved on to the BTPS finals where they competed against the top four teams from the southern part of our division!

Our junior curling program is proud to welcome Carter Rycroft to Mannville on Feb. 19. Mr. Rycroft will be leading a curling clinic for our 20 local curlers from Grades 4-12. The students are looking forward to learning new skills and techniques from this master curler!

Stadium Addition Damaged By Water Leakage Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Roof concerns at the Stadium in Vermilion are once again front and centre. The room which houses the zamboni as well as the referees and girls dressing rooms on the north side of the building, have recently seen some water damage due to leaking through the roof system.

The roof has previously seen some patch work but now consideration is being given to performing a more drastic repair to ensure further damage is

avoided.

The cause is believed to be snow and ice buildup on the edge of the eaves, preventing proper drainage and snow removal. Pooling water seems to be running down the walls and causing deterioration of the concrete grouting and paint on the concrete block walls.

Inside the building the water seepage has recently shorted a circuit board in a furnace and destroyed laminate countertops in the dressing rooms.

Roofing crews who recently made repairs to the curling rink were asked to make an assessment to the north addi-

tion roof and they suggested a 2-ply answer on the warranty on the proposed torched on product which is similar to repair before making a decision on what what has been used over the lobby and route to take with the roof.

future for barley farmers.

Once fully implemented, this historic agreement is expec ted to gradually remove tariffs on virtually all of Canada’s agriculture and food products. The beef and pork indus-

tries will benefit considerably from this a sp e c t of th e a g re e m e nt, a s tariffs on their exports have historically been the highest. “ We are par tnered with—and dependent upon—the beef and pork industries,” said Sawyer.

“The anticipated increase in demand for beef and pork exports will mean greater demand for feed barley.

This will be a big boost to the bottom line for our producers.”

The CETA is expected to result in $1.5 billion in new agri-food exports, including a $6 0 0 million increase in beef exports and $400 million in pork.

With over 80 per cent of harvested barley going towards feed production, an increase in the agri-food export market will result in a significant economic boost for barley farmers.

Ken and Josie Pashulka, along with their three son Tyson, Riley and Taylor, own and operate Rusylvia Cattle Co. Their farm is located in Northeaste r n Alb e r ta in th e co u nt y of Two Hills. They run a 400 beef cow herd consisting of purebred Maine Anjou and Black Angus along with commercial black cows. They annually crop 1000 acres as well as 1200 acres of hay. The beef herd uses AI practise to be aggressive in the beef industry.

The farm has a Verified Beef Poducer for 6 years and has completed the Enviromental Farm Plan. Their sons are very active in all aspects of the farm decisions and day to day activites and also the 4-H program with steer and female projects. The farm is a source of great pride and enjoyment.

Rustlers Curling Teams Ready For ACAC Championships Lakeland College Submitted Ocean Smart likes her team’s chances of winning a medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) curling championship at the Vermilion Curling Club on Feb. 21 to 23.

“Our team goal is to be in the finals of the ACAC championships,” says Smart, skip of Lakeland College Rustlers woman’s rink.

It’s a goal that coach Chris McQuid thinks is doable.

“NAIT is one rink we’ve struggled with at regional events in the past and there are definitely other good teams at the championship but I think we can compete with any of them,” says McQuid.

Smart has competed in two ACAC curling championships, winning bronze in 2012. This year she’s with a new lineup that consists of third Cori Dunbar, second Karli Makichuk, and leads Casey Chalut and Amber Stachura. Dunbar previously played for NAIT, winning two silvers and a bronze in ACAC competition.

“We have a very experienced team and I think we do have the talent to win. We just have to stick together as a team and work hard,” says Smart who is in the bachelor of commerce program at the Lloydminster campus. “We hope that playing at Vermilion, the rink may be packed and we can feed off the home crowd.”

One thing that sets the Rustlers apart from other women’s teams is their hitting game. “The women’s game is usually more finesse but this team is a very strong hitting team. This gives us a little more in our arsenal that we can use,” says McQuid.

Lakeland’s mixed team of Robyn Gerrard, Devon Barnard, Dusty Haldenby, Shayne Copeland and Cassandra Sunderland is a younger team.

“It’s going to be a good experience for them. Olds College and NAIT are tough in mixed for sure. Our goal is to medal, but if we get hot, you never know,” says McQuid.

First draws are Friday at 4 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Gold medal games are Sunday at 2 p.m. The
