Alberta Opera Entertains Vermilion Students

The Alberta Opera Touring Association paid a visit to the Vermilion area on Jan. 27, as a few select students were given the opportunity to participate in the presentation of “Aladdin.” The opera company, based out of Edmonton, works to maintain a tradition of presenting live musical theatre to students throughout the province of Alberta. Sixteen students were chosen to participate in the Alberta Opera presentation of “Aladdin” during the organization’s visit to the school on Jan. 27.

St. Jerome’s Bodyguards

Two St. Jerome’s students acted as Aladdin’s bodyguards as he wished for more money and lavish items, during the performance at the school.

Beauty, Pinocchio, Jack and The Beanstalk and Hansel and Gretel, just to name a few.

The opera group makes visits to Alberta schools and incorporates students into each of the presentations. Sixteen students were selected to perform with the opera actors and bring to life the story of Aladdin.

At the St. Jerome’s theatre presentation, the opera group put their own comedic spin on the classic play which was adapted by Director Farren Timoteo, to teach students the importance of being thankful for what they have.

The character Aladdin who was from a family stricken by poverty, resorted to thievery to help support his family. He was

visited by Maalik, a mysterious character who tempts Aladdin with a magical ring which can make any wish come true.

Frivolously making wishes, Aladdin soon finds himself more unhappy than before finding his fortune. He finally has had enough and wishes to be anywhere but in his situation. He then finds himself on a deserted island with a castaway who teaches him that obtaining material objects is not the key to true happiness.

Aladdin realizes that “you must be very careful with one’s words when making wishes.”

Following the presentation students were allowed to ask questions about the different aspects of the performance.

RCMP Reports

Kitscoty- Theft Of Welding Tools On the Morning of January 18, Kitscoty RCMP received a complaint of a break and enter to a construction business located on Range Road 14, 1 mile south of Highway 16. Sometime overnight unknown persons cut a lock on a gate and entered the compound where 2 large welding units which were bolted to skids were removed and taken. It is believed that in order to move two large welding units the persons involved would

charge two in multi-million dollar fraud investigation The Calgary RCMP Financial Integrity Unit has completed their investigation into a commercial real estate venture operated by Concrete Equities Inc. Concrete Equities raised money from Canadian investors for the purchase of undeveloped beach properties in Senora, Mexico, entitled the El Golfo de Santa Clara Project. The funds were raised through Offering Memorandums and were RRSP eligible. Concrete Equities Inc. and all of their related corporations went into receivership in 2009.

It is alleged that between June 4, 2007 and May 13, 2009, David Nelson Humeniuk and Varun Aurora provided false information to investors, diverted funds to other business ventures outside of the investment agreement and stole investors funds. David Humeniuk is also charged alone with one count of theft and money laundering for taking $1 million RCMP Calgary Financial Integrity of investors’ funds for his personal use.

The loss to investors as a result of this fraud and theft exceeds $23 million.

Varun Aurora and David Nelson Humeniuk have been charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of theft over $5,000. Humeniuk has been charged alone with an additional theft over $5,000 and one count of money laundering.

Dave Nelson Humeniuk of St. Albert, Alberta, has been arrested and released to attend Calgary Provincial Court on February 27, 2014.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of Varun (AKA Vinny) Aurora.

Human Powered Racing Takes Place In Lloydminster And Vermilion Human Powered Racing Submitted

Human Powered Racing would like to announce a Kids of Steel Race Prep camp happening in Vermilion AB and Lloydminster AB on May 31 and June 1, 2014. The camp is intended to help youth participants prepare for the

RockSolid Vermilion Triathlon and the Lloydminster Triathlon.

The RockSolid Vermilion Triathlon is in its second year and takes place on June 15, 2014 at the Vermilion Aquatic Centre. The Lloydminster Triathlon is a new addition to the Alberta and Saskatchewan race calendars and takes place on June 20 & 21, 2014 at

the Lloydminster Leisure Centre and Bud Miller Park. Both races have Kids of Steel distances included for youth 6 to 15 years of age as well as adult Sprint and Try-a-Tri distances.

The race prep camp is open to youth aged 6 to 15 and is free to registered race participants. Race Director Rob Dibden will lead the camp, which will be

an opportunity for youth to preview the race courses and to learn race techniques and strategies to make participation in the races a less intimidating and more enjoyable experience.

Slippery Situations Karen Nedzielski Editor

As we age gracefully through life m a ny of u s wi ll at some point, experience a life changing illness or injury to either ourselves or someone close to us. These experiences can test our strengths and weaknesses and take us to our breaking point.

Some of these incidents can be as simple as fall which can progress into something much more serious without even knowing the impact it can cause in our lives.

With the recent thaw and freeze c ycl e we a re exp e r i e n ci n g i n th e Vermilion area, streets, parking lots and sidewalks can be a dangerous gauntlet for many to navigate. Especially for seniors or those who struggle with walking.

It is the property owner’s responsi-

bility to ensure the sidewalks are clear but it can take time to have the snow removed, making a safe path for walking.

I am a few years away from being a senior but have recently experienced a fall which could have resulted in a more serious injury than what occurred.

One morning as I was leaving my yard for work, something caught my attention in our barn yard. It looked as though a horse ran past the barn and immediately I drove out to investigate. A number of our horses were in fact out and wandering the feed yard.

I assumed the gate had somehow been opened. The gate was closed and the few horses left in the paddock were waiting anxiously for the return of the rest of the herd.

My thoughts were to open the gate and let the horses out to join the herd. I would then go back and chase the entire herd back in. It would be much easier than trying to keep a few

desperate horses in and try to call the escapees back to them.

While opening the gate I slipped on an ice patch, fell and jarred my forearm into the frozen ground. It felt as though my shoulder came through my collar bone and after waiting a moment or two for recovery, thought I better get up before I get trampled by the herd.

Luckily I did not break any bones but I noticed it did take me longer to get over the aches and stiffness resulting from the fall. This seems to be quite common as we get older.

I know a number of older folks who have suffered a fall later in life and it seems for some, they never completely recover.

I believe having a positive outlook can play a big part in recovering from illness or injury. A wise person once told me “things happen for a reason.”

We do not know why these life changing events happen but we can learn

fro m th e exp e ri e n ces. A p ositive approach is the best and will steer a ship through any troubling water.

A good friend of The Voice, Franklin Wolters, made a recent trip to the city and experienced a similar fall which has caused some concerning after -effects. He called to check in with us and the always happy and positive Franklin, quickly put our concerns at ease.

Many other people would not take the accident as well and find them slump into a state of depression. But not our Franklin! His same cheerful voice reassured us all that he will be up and around in no time at all.

I would like to extend a big caution to everyone in the area. Please be careful walking and if you see someone who may need assistance crossing an icy street or sidewalk, give them a hand. Young or old, falling hurts us all.

Letter to the Editor ATCO Dear Editor, I am writing to extend my sincere thanks to your readers and all ATCO Electric customers for their patience, understanding and words of encouragement between January 15 - 18 as ATCO Elec tric crews worked to restore power to customers after the severe wind storms.

Extreme weather conditions are a fact of life in Alberta but this was an unprecedented situation for our crews and our customers. The widespread, extended storm, with winds in excess of 120 km / h in some locations, downed power lines and damaged structures across north-

ern and east central Alberta affecting close to 14,000 of our custome rs. A s l o c a l crews resp o n d e d to immediate emergency situations, a coordinated response was simultaneously launched across the province to manage outage restoration and keep customers and the public informed. At the peak of activity we had between 65 and 75 crews working at locations across our service area to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

T h e l o s s o f e l e c t r i c a l s e r v i c e, especially for extended periods, can have significant personal and business consequence for our customers.

We understand that and organized our resources to allow for recovery

work to occur virtually around the clock, while still keeping our number one focus on safety for our people and the public.

It was ver y gratifying to see the strong public suppor t for our

crews and suppor t people as they responded. We shared the extent of the damage and our restoration progress through a wide variety of communication channels and in turn heard many words of suppor t and communication from our customers and the public. Those warm words were greatly appreciated by all of our people – especially those on the front lines restoring our system. So thanks to all of you who took the time to contact us.

Power was restored to most locations by mid-day, January 16 with the final few sites back on Saturday, Jan. 18. Due to the extent of the damage in some locations, we made temporary repairs to get the power back quickly and will complete the permanent repair work over the next couple of weeks.

It was a challenging couple of days for many people but we are proud to be part of a caring community that understands and supports the effort required to triumph over such challenging circumstances.

Well folks. I got out for some fresh air this past weekend and an interesting adventure. Local farmers and rural residents got together for a planned wildlife predator management program, with the focus on the numerous coyotes this year.

Over the last several years coyote populations have exploded, diminishing other wildlife in great numbers. Everything from rabbits, game birds and even deer, with high coyote populations and low food sources even your “Witty the kitty” and “Puddle the poodle” are on the menu.

Coyotes are getting braver and travelling in packs, a very dangerous habit, as they will take the kitties or puppies right off your patio, and as some unfortunate

people found out in the past several years, may even attack you!

In October 2009, a 19 year old Canadian folk singer on break from a concert tour, died as a result of an attack by a pack of coyotes while hiking in Eastern Canada.

Attacks on humans are up and as numbers increase, children are becoming the highest percentage.

Also, as local cattle farmers prepare for the calving season, predator management is a part of rural life on the prairies. Many of the program participants were also members of local fish and game clubs, that assisted.

Now I don’t believe at all that the coyote should be eradicated from the planet, as they have their place in our life as any other, as a matter of fact they are very beneficial in rodent control.

Coyotes have very few predators to keep down their populations other than man.

They are hardy, very adaptable survivors, and they will eat just about anything including tin cans.

Coyotes, I believe, will still roam the earth long after even mankind ceases to exist. There is still a minimal market for coyote fur to make clothing so in the past we donated all the successful hunt proceeds to the “Camp for Cancer.” It’s a worthwhile program that sponsors youngsters with cancer or recovering from cancer, to go to summer camp which is something our archery club has donated to for many years with proceeds from all kinds of outdoor activities.

I was simply just looking forward to getting outdoors and enjoying an adventure, my bow hunting partner Blaine joined me for the day, and the temperature was even plus 3C even at 6 a.m. I couldn’t believe it was that warm as I left my home in the dark. However, there was quite a

stiff wind which could have hindered the day in the coyote’s favor, but we were just happy to be outdoors.

Our plan was to drive to the areas reported as heavily populated with coyotes and walk to a set and predator call, which we call the “bunny blues” as it sounds like a rabbit in distress while being attacked by a predator.

These calls will attract every predator from magpies and owls to grizzly bear or cougars and everything in between. It is very effective with coyotes and will literally bring them running and they will end up in your lap as you sit there. In past calling sessions I have had up to six coyotes all running in full out trying to outrun each other, sometimes you may have to act in pure self-defense as they are in a feeding frenzy.

Railways Must Move Record Crop Leon Benoit, MP Press Release

OTTAWA (1st November, 2013) – Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, urges CN and CP Rail officials to focus their railways to move a record crop quickly – an issue that remains a top priority for farmers in the West.

“I’m proud of our farmers and what

they have been able to accomplish this year,” said Benoit. “This year’s crop is much larger than in previous years.

This is good for farmers, but places a greater responsibility on railways to get this crop to market efficiently.”

Benoit pointed to the fact that prices depend on on-time shipment of grain.

“If Canada is to obtain a premium it is very important that we continue to remain a reliable shipper of grain. Also, farmers could experience huge losses

of stored grain if it isn’t moved out of temporary storage soon.”

B e n oit s ai d h e is co m mit te d to speaking further with railway officials about the issue. “I met with representatives from CN Rail on Tuesday and encouraged them to focus on early movement. I was happy to hear that the President clearly understands its importance.” Benoit also expressed his desire to meet with other officials in the coming days. “I will be encouraging

officials from CP Rail as well to ramp up their game and move grain faster than in the past.”

To en co u ra g e ea rly m ovem ent, Benoit urged farmers to join him in his call for a rapid response. “I would encourage all farmers to express their need for quick movement to both CN and CP Rail. I am confident in our railway companies but public input would be helpful in moving forward.”

We can never appreciate how well off we are until we see how other folks are having to exist. I’ve written about how our early pioneer had to endure isolation and hardships when our country was being settled and thought of how could they have ever managed to live any kind of decent life in those conditions. Not only was the work hard and tedious but most times rewards were small or even nonexistent. Farms were small and cash crops were not as important as growing food. The spectra of injury or illness with no telephone or way to travel for help in bad weather roads, must have been daunting to say the least. In times of emergency though you probably promptly got help once the doctor got there or you arrived at the hospital. Think now of the waiting times in emergency wards or the long waiting lists for all but life and death situations. You hear of people passing away waiting for medical care.

A short visit to the city had me wondering what the allure of city life could be. I was thinking, to live here you’d need to hold a gun on me. If wild country roads were a challenge, try the streets of heavy traffic with the slush and spray of melting snow and all drivers with a seemingly death wish. The stress of that would make a twenty mile horseback ride in below zero weather a joy in comparison. I don’t think I’m the only one who would think so.

Talk about those pioneers being captive in their shacks back then and think of the seniors and perhaps handicapped people in the city who live behind double locked doors and tremble anytime a strange knock comes at the door. Not at all like the pioneers who welcomed company and

more than likely never even locked their doors in case a neighbour needed a place to come in and warm up.

Well folks say they have to go where the work is and spend exorbitant prices for basic rent and necessities and the big wage evaporates it seems. What a cruel joke that is. In the city one a job is for some reason curtailed, there is really nothing else to fall back on for long. What a nightmare. The old pioneer still maybe had his cellar with garden stored vegetables and something at least to eat and you could cut wood to keep warm. Hard times I guess, but I’ll take the old times anytime!!! There wasn’t any plastic to run a debt up, so how did those early folks get by? I guess if you were born to city life, you could get used to the increased traffic and crowding, but coming all at once it’s a rude awakening. Picture a frog sitting in a dish of water that is gradually heated, the frog will sit contented until he cooks in the boiling water!! I read a study where rats were put in an enclosed place.

When it wasn’t crowded they seemed to get along OK. Increase the crowding and finally they started fighting and eating each other. I think you get the picture.

My idea of city circumstances and city life. There’s not one thing present I can really say I’d be able to put up with and enjoy life there. That’s because us old country rednecks know there is something better. A lot of our early settlers came from the old countries and cities to make a new start and a better life. I used to think they were a brave lot, but most of them loved the freedom of the country and the ability to grow things to eat. Fortunately there were enough souls who had the experience to help them find the way. I feel now I was so blessed to been born in a place where you could live and knew the bounty of hard work and know it was in some part at least just for you and not just profiting

some multinational corporation. I can say with no reservations of any kind that there seemed to be real happiness and good times although at the time, we didn’t realize just how really good they were!! As time goes by the farms are getting ever larger and fewer people know the real benefit of living close to the land and nature. Striker Lanes Best Ball Bowling Tournament Results Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Vermilion’s Striker Lanes Bowling alley hosted a Best Ball tournament on Jan. 25 which drew bowlers from around the area and abroad.

Claiming fourth place in the tournament was the Vermilion team of Dave MacNeill and Cory Sippola with a combined total of 2,359 points. Third

place went to Pat and Glen Bennet of Edmonton with a total of 2,412 points.

Second place was won by Carol Levesque and Mario Vautour both from Vermilion, with a total of 2,426 points. Claiming the tournament title with a total of 2,474 was the Vegreville team of Sam Gagne and Kevin Hank.

The next tournament to be hosted by Striker Lanes is not until April with the final tournament in June.

Benefits Of Deception Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

Once, while wandering around the Hillside Mall in Victoria, an excited young man approached me. He said he was a great fan of my ‘work’. Really? I thought.

My part-time fitness centre job didn’t seem all that impressive. I remember feeling a combination of intrigue, confusion, and then faint fat-headedness. Clearly, he thought I was someone else. Apparently, someone deserving of his admiration.

I guess it was the fat-headedness that allowed me to not exactly lie to him, but not correct him either. I missed the moment during which I could simply have admitted that this was a case of mistaken identity. He was so excited to see the person whom I was not, I couldn’t just ruin it for him, could I? While I was busy rationalizing that thought, he grappled into his backpack and pulled out a notepad and pen.

What could I do? Destroy the kid’s percep-

tion that he’d just won something? What if it was the only piece of good luck he’d had all week, all month, all year? In a lifetime?

I took the pen and scratched out a short verse (I know!) and my autograph, another action that wasn’t completely fraudulent, I reasoned, since my ‘signature’ is quite unreadable on any ordinary day.

Almost thirty years later, that scene sometimes returns to me from the misty backroom of my memory. Hand up for confession: I once exhibited the behaviour of a big fat liar of the most despicable kind. I have offered my sincere repentance to the Universe, but of course that doesn’t erase the deed from record.

So, here’s the question: are there times when the benefits of allowing an untruth to flourish override the benefits of uttering only the absolute truth?

My decision to passively impersonate some unknown accomplished poet was definitely influenced by that kid’s exuberance at having cornered ‘her’ at the mall.

I can’t deny that ego played a big part, too. But the most important aspect of the

transaction had to do with my not wanting to destroy another person’s happy delusion. Fraud is fraud, it’s true, but what’s the ratio of harm over benefit in this instance, and does it matter?

When, if ever, is it alright to compromise truth?

At a live show I attended a couple of years ago, musician Fred Eaglesmith joked about how parents who grew up in the 1960s, the so-called free-spirited era of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, are often reluctant to speak candidly with their children about their own behaviour as youths.

“You can’t tell the kids THAT stuff, can ya?” Eaglesmith teased.

Why is that? Are we protecting our children or ourselves if we re-invent the days of our youths to omit anything that includes ourselves engaging in behaviours we’d prefer our own kids to avoid?

And what do our kids think if they find out we weren’t quite as squeaky clean as we’d pretended in our re-designed past?

Do they understand or do we lose a little credibility?

It’s an admirable virtue to aspire to absolute honesty and forthrightness. From this distance, I believe it was unfair of me to perpetuate that kid’s belief that I was someone vaguely famous. It was dishonest and dumb, but my actions probably did him no harm. I tend to think I suffered most afterward. It was I who had to lug that guilt around in my backpack to the future, after all.

Authorities will claim that withholding certain “truths” from us is for our own good. Is that protective or patronizing? Is the connotation of the message that we are too delicate to process the raw information of truth?

Each of us decides the degree to which we’re willing to be honest. I suppose only those without a self-censor might be capable of expressing unfiltered honesty.

For most of us, it’s a continuous weighing of the pros and cons, depending upon the subject, who we’re discussing it with, and how the potential consequences of full disclosure will affect what happens next.

Jerome’s School will receive upgrades to its facility to the tune of $10 million dollars which will include renovations to the roof, heating, ventilation and exterior. Some of the interior area will also see upgrades to make better use of space.

The school was originally built in 1962 and has seen additions made to the building in 1963, 1970, 1983 and the latest renovations done in 1992.

S c h o o l Tr u s t e e J i m B r a d y, responded to the announcement by thanking the Province for bringing education to the forefront of importance. B rady was one of the first s tu d e nt s to at te n d St. J e ro m e’s School upon its opening 50 years ago.

A similar announcement was made on Jan. 28 at E. H Walter School in Paradise Valley which will see similar upgrades to that of St. Jerome’s.

Although Dr. Starke could not give an exact date on when the modernizations will begin, it was a welcomed announcement to students and staff of St. Jerome’s School.

Lakeland College’s First Female President Karen Nedzielski Reporter After three weeks on the job, newly appointed Lakeland College President, Dr. Tracy Edwards, says she is enjoying life in Vermilion and settling into to her new role at the College.

Born in Ontario, Dr. Edwards and her husband, called Nova Scotia home where they first met. However, last November the two made the move to Vermilion from Lethbridge where she served as President and Chief Executive Officer for Lethbridge College.

This is Dr. Edwards’ fifth college to serve at, with three of them being in Canada. She first worked at the Nova Scotia Community College for 15 years and then moved on to Texas, Florida, Lethbridge and now with Lakeland College.

A college graduate, which s h e s a i d a c tu a l l y tu r n e d h e r l ife a ro u n d , D r. E d w a r d s a d m i t s s h e was not a good high school student.

“I just didn’t find any relevance in what I was learning. When I went to college, everything just seemed to make sense.”

Dr. Edwards has a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Sociology, a Master’s of Education in Educational Administration, a Doctorate in College Leadership from the University of Texas in Austin and also holds a teaching certificate.

“I started as a student then moved into faculty, then department head, Vice Principal, Principal, Academic VP then a President. I came up through the ranks,” said Edwards.

When the choice was made to leave

Florida many people questioned her decision.

Dr. Edwards said while living there they experienced hurricane Charlie, Frances and Ivan and explains when you live in your house with your windows boarded up, it is not a good feeling.

She remembers after hurricane Charlie nobody in the area had power or cell phone service. There was no way to communicate with people. Dr. Edwards said only the TV stations were working so they resorted to the use of the television to communicate with faculty, staff and students.

She said the scene resembled that of a war zone.

“We were in the States for seven years and enjoyed living there, but Canada is my home.”

Working at Lethbridge College, Dr. Edwards said that College does have an agricultural program but adds the southern Alberta school does not quite match that of the Vermilion campus.

“The agriculture and trades are very strong here. The Lloydminster campus focuses primarily on University transfer and business programs,” Dr. Edwards said. “Both campuses are positioned well to serve their communities. That’s very unique.”

When Dr. Edwards first started working at Lethbridge College she said the school was not very connected with the First Nations community. She worked tirelessly to establish a transition program, have Elders in residence and also helped establish an Elder Advisory Committee, further strengthening the ties between the two.

Dr. Edwards has worked closely with the Blackfoot Native tribes around the Lethbridge area and for her work with them, the elders have given her an Eagle feather, a sign of honour within the community and only given to very few.

She was also given a Blackfoot name by one of the Native Elders “Matoomikkistaki”, which means “First Offering”.

When asked about where she sees th e C o l l e g e m ov i n g towa rd s , D r.

Edwards said she is a big fan of making sure you understand what is, before you start to move forward. She said the next three months will be about learning, getting to know the people, the institution, understanding its strengths and making connections within the community.

“There are so many cool things going on here. There are lots of things you can leverage,” Dr. Edwards said. “ We have a ver y strong applied research agenda and that will be an area of growth for us.”

She said joining the College o n i t s 10 0 th ye a r ce l e b ration was interesting and liked the fa c t that it has so m u ch his to r y.

Dr. Edwards is the first female Presid ent of th e Colle g e a n d jo kin gly s a i d i t o n l y t o o k 10 0 y e a r s f o r them (the College) to nail it.

The focus she added will be on being a good partner in the communities the two campuses serve.

“It’s a win-win when we can all work together in the best interest of our area.”

“The College has a lot of assets that can help the community and the community has the resources to help the College.”

D r. E d w a r d s s a i d s h e a n d h e r husband enjoy the outdoors and fishing but admited they are a little rusty on their cross-country skis.

They love the area and originating from the east, says Lethbridge doesn’t have many trees. She said Vermilion feels more like home.

Willie’s Groundhog

Will the groundhog see his shadow? Many people in the Vermilion area are most likely hoping that the ground-burrowing creature will in fact, see his shadow and according to folklore, we will experience spring in the very near future.

Should he not, we will be forced to endure another six weeks of winter before the spring thaw arrives. Pictured here is a photo taken approximately 25 years ago and submitted by William (Willie) Osinchuk, of a groundhog who had been awakened prematurely from his slumber. The groundhog’s home had been uprooted by a Caterpillar which had been cleaning up some brush in the area.

After a short visit to the Osinchuk home, the groundhog began to wake up and so he was found a new home in a nearby bush pile to continue his winter nap.

Mannville Golden Age Club Annual Meeting Submitted

The Mannville Golden Age Club held its Annual Meeting on Jan. 22 with 22 people attending. One minute of silence was observed for six deceased members.

Reports were given for finance, kitchen, decorating, history, mini-golf, Melody Makers and freindship.

The Centre invites everyone to partake in activities to spend an enjoyable afternoon, morning or evening.

Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m. is floor curling, Tuesday and Thursday is Bingo and Canasta at 2 p.m. On the first and third Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. is

shuffle board and on the second and fourth Friday of the month we hold a Whist party at 7 p.m. On the fifth Friday we hold a cribbage match at 7 p.m.

An invistation is given for a special occasional pot luck supper.

Winter Fair Bear Gets A Name

Moriah Ostropolski is the winner of the Name The Winter Fair Bear contest. “Flurry” is the name the Good Life Institute Board of Directors unanimou sly agreed suit s the institute’s mascot. Brand Development Coordinator, Geoffrey Person said more than two dozen names were submitted at community events, via social media and email. Person said it was a tough decision but the Institute is happy to re-introduce Flurry the Winter Fair Bear to the community.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES Embracing Winter Activities On Jan. 27, VES was treated to the opera, Aladdin, put on by Opera Alberta. They sent out three actors (who could also sing very well) and a keyboardist /drummer, and then pulled 16 students from VES to help be stage crew and actors. It was a wonderful way to spend an hour on a Monday afternoon.

Basketball has been going strong since the beginning of January. There are 33 students who signed up and they are learning skills two afternoons a week from Mr. Beecroft and Mrs. Seymour.

VES is so fortunate to have a class set of snowshoes and an ice surface so close to VES. Several students have tried out the snowshoes at recesses and many classes have made use of them during their physical education classes. As well, several grades have brought skates to school and used the outdoor skating rink in their gym classes.

On Feb. 5, we will be participating

in our annual Winter Walk. In period 4, all the students will be in the gym doing an Olympics based mini workout with Curtis Gorkoff. After lunch, we begin outdoor activities with different stations set up and different activities at each station. This is a project put on

by Shape Alberta and Be Fit For Life.

VES will proudly host our fifteenth annual science fair on Feb. 7. The fair is open to entries from interested VES students in Grades one through six.

Members of the public are welcome to attend from 12-2. Last year we had over thirty entries, most of which were deemed excellent by our judges.

Our judges have always been interested members of the community, who have enjoyed the keen scientific minds of the students involved. Hope to see you out.

St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

A Number Of Performances At St. Jerome’s “Chickadee-dee-dee! Chickadeedee-dee!” The Grade 2 class heard the familiar winter song of the black-capped chickadee as they gave a helping hand to our winter birds. Knowing that a chickadee weighs as much as a dime and that they flap their wings about 30 times per second, the students watched with appreciation as the hungry birds flew close to eat from seed-covered bagels. Much to our delight, a downy woodpecker arrived, displaying his long, sharp beak and plumage much different from a chickadee. It was a day full of nature, joy, and discovery.

The students at St. Jerome’s were treated to three wonderful theatrical

performances this past week. On Monday, the Alberta Opera, along with some Grade 5 extras presented a spectacular show of Aladdin. The three actors/actresses were amazing and all the students were totally enthralled throughout the performance.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Grade 9 French class performed “Scooby-Doo” and “Toy Story”. The students first had to write the play, then translate it into French, make sets, gather costumes and learn their lines. Both groups of actors/actresses did a fabulous job.

Congratulations to the Jr. Girls Spartans Basketball team as they won the Bishop Lloyd Championship on Jan. 25.

The Spartans first game was against E. S. Laird from Lloydminster and the Spartans were able to defeat the Sabers 37-28. On Saturday in the semi-finals the Spartans played another Lloydminster team, Holy Rosary Raiders and in a hard fought battle beating the Raiders 40-37. In the Championship game the Spartans went against

another busy one for us at St. Jerome’s.

Tuesday, Feb. 4 students from Grade 6-12 receive Report Cards and Wednesday, Feb. 5 is Early Dismissal at 2 p.m. The Elementary is planning an Olympic activity for the end of the week. Wednesday, Feb. 12 is the “100th Day of School”. The Grade 1 and 2 classes will be very busy with a variety of activities. Feb. 13 is our monthly mass at 10:30 a.m. and we invite parish community members to join us and in the afternoon we will be able to watch the super talented students we have at our school with our Annual Talent Show. Everyone will be looking their very best and sharing their love on Friday, Feb. 14 as we celebrate “Formal Day” and “Valentine’s Day”. There is No School for students on February 17 and 18. Stand up to Bullying and wear Pink on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and then come out on Thursday, Feb. 27 to enjoy a night at the Annual St. Jerome’s Carnival.

VIBE Offers Mannville Student Breakfast During Exams This week let’s have a little glance of everything that is coming up at your school and a little housekeeping.

Staff and students at our school invite the community to come with us for a thirty minute Winter Walk. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 5 as kick-off is at 12:35 p.m. followed by the

Winter Walk at 1 p.m. The walk will be followed by a healthy snack at 1:30 p.m.

We never mentioned that Mr. Kevin John is helping with coaching our junior high basketball team.

Sometimes students are either too rushed or too nervous to eat breakfast before their exam, so VIBE stepped up and provided muffins for all of our diploma students.

We always appreciate the excellent service we receive from the Mannville Bottle Depot. Verner and Elsie Thompson faithfully take care of our bottle recycling needs.

For student safety, please do not stop or park on or near the school crosswalk at drop off or pick up times. Staff have seen some close calls involving vehicles and children. Please take time today to remind your children to use the crosswalk when crossing the street.

I am sure we mentioned our health challenge to make 2014 a year of active living and healthy choices. Stay tuned for fun challenges and healthy tips and information. Contact Mrs. Tod if you have any healthy lifestyle changes that you would like to see promoted over the next few months.

A reminder that there is no school on February 18, as it is a day in lieu.

February 20 is our next School Dressup Day. I wonder what the Grade seven class will pick for us. It will also be popcorn day.

Anti-Bullying Day (a.k.a. Pink Shirt Day) will be on Tuesday, February 25 this year at our school, as our secondary students are off to Table Mountain for a day of skiing and snowboarding on Wednesday, February 26.

And February 28 Elementary Report Cards go out! It is also perogy day.

The Community Closet Society of Vermilion held its first meeting for 2014 and had a total of $7,000 to donate.

A number of cheque presentations were made on Jan . 30, in which the Community Closet Society of Vermilion donated proceeds from the store sales to local groups and organizations in the area.

Representatives from the groups receiv-

ing funding were: Kathy Crowe from the Vermilion Dance Association; Cathy Waltz of the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association Dance; Lynall Miller from Dance Impressions by Ryan, (Parents Committee); Shawn Bell for the Vermilion Spray Park; and Bill Carter from the Battle River Victims Assistance Society, (proceeds will go toward the Father-Daughter Dinner on March 18).

Each group received $500 with the exception of the Spray Park, which received $5,000.

Farmers Need The Railways Now Leon Benoit, MP Press Release

Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright spoke in the House of Commons yesterday about the backlog of grain caused by a successful year in 2013 and slow grain movement in December and January. An excerpt from Hansard follows: “Mr. Speaker, farmers have demonstrated what they are capable of by producing a huge record crop this year. That should be good news but, right now, it frankly does not look like

good news.

“Less than a year ago, some wheat sold for over $9 a bushel. Good stuff.

H owever, now, farm ers are b ein g offered under $4 a bushel for the same quality of wheat. Market forces certainly can explain part of that, but not all of it.

“The problem is that we do not a have co m p etitive m a r ket wh e n it comes to shipping grain. Farmers are captive shippers who are at the mercy of CN and CP, whichever line runs through their area. They have no choice.

“I have been told that grain companies are taking advantage of that by

buying grain at fire-sale prices and still selling it at much higher prices into the world market.

“The agriculture minister has been doing a lot of work on that and has done a good job.

“However, it is time for railways to up their game and it is time for grain companies to complete their sales to allow farmers to get closer to the world price for their hard-earned crops.”

Benoit went on to clarify that he is one of the farmers going to be caught up in problems in the spring if this situation isn’t rectified soon.

“Last August I spoke to the Port of

Prince Rupert and Vancouver about the huge crop they were going to have to move. Since then I’ve talked to Minister Ritz and the Prime Minister’s office about the problem and continue to do so. The Minister is well aware of the problem and continues to work on it. We need to know that the railways and grain companies are able to keep pace with production,” he explained. “Having this type of backlog hurts famers financially in the short term, and into the future when they go to seed nex t years’ crops and have full bins.”

News Kalyna Country PCN To Offer Monthly Geriatric Clinic In Vegreville, Vermilion And Viking Kalyna Country PCN Press Release

The Kalyna Country Primary Care Network (PCN) is pleased to be offering a specialized geriatric assessment by our multidisciplinar y team fo r seniors who have chronic, complex health issues. The goal is to ensure seniors living in our area enjoy optimal health and quality of life while remaining in the community for as long as possible.

The PCN implemented this program

due to the demographics in the area.

The Kalyna Country PCN area has a high number of seniors compared to the provincial averages. Due to this, there is a need for expanded specialized geriatric assessment, care and follow up of our communities seniors.

“Kalyna Country PCN is excited about recruiting Dr. G. Anderson, who has specialized training in the care of the elderly. Dr. Anderson is presently involved with two successful clinics in Wainwright and Two Hills.

I am pleased that the PCN is able to offer this valuable service in our local

communities,” stated Brian Match, Kalyna Country PCN Executive Director.

What do you do when things do not pan out the way you had hoped?

Do you get disappointed and frustrated? Do you get depressed and discouraged. Do you criticize yourself or blame others because things did not work out?

The Vermilion Stadium and Arena were kept busy during the Atom and Peewee tournaments held on Jan. 24 to 26. The weekend of games saw teams from Lloydminster, Airdrie, Bonnyville, Whitecourt, Swift Current, Onoway, Stettler, Wainwright and Vermilion.

They all faced-off in hopes of winning the tournament.

T h e Fr i d ay eve n i n g g a m e s h a d Vermilion host Lloydminster’s Atom and Peewee teams. The Atom game ended with Lloydminster claiming the win against Vermilion 2-0. The Peewee game had Lloydminster lead the scoring well into the third period until Vermilion rallied back to score three goals in the final few minutes of the game, ending in a 3-3 tie.

The Saturday games got underway at 8 a.m. with Stettler and Airdrie lacing up in the Atoms division with the Onoway and Wainwright Peewees also took to the ice.

Stettler came out on top with a shutout against Airdrie, 5-0. Wainwright edged out Onoway with a 4-1 win.

Next up in the Atoms were Swift Current and Vermilion. The hometown team could not keep up with the scoring as the game ended with Swift Current scoring four goals to Vermilion’s one.

The Peewee division saw a much different outcome for the Vermilion team as they took on Whitecourt.

Goalie Kailey Geall defended Vermilion with a shutout against Whitecourt as the hometown fired eight pucks into the Whitecourt net.

The Saturday afternoon Atom games saw Bonnyville defeat Stettler, 2-1, as the Lloydminster and Swift Current game ended in a 1-1 tie.

T h e P e ewe e g a m e s p l aye d h a d Bonnyville beat out Onoway, 8-1, and saw Lloydminster hand Whitecourt a huge loss, 10-0. Later that day Wainwright matched up against Bonnyville who could not keep up with Wainwright’s scoring, ending in a 9-1 win for Wainwright. The evening game had the Bonnyville Atoms take on Airdrie which ended in a 7-2 win for Bonnyville.

The Sunday finals started off with teams vying for third place with Aridrie taking on Vermilion for the Atoms.

Vermilion fought hard but fell to Airdrie 3-2. The Whitecourt and Onoway Peewee teams battled for third place with Onoway taking the win, 4-1.

For second place in the tournament, the Lloydminster and Stettler Atoms strapped on the blades but it would be Lloydminster claiming second spot with a 7-1 win.

Vermilion and Bonnyville were next to hit the ice in the third place finals for the Peewees. Vermilion would not give Bonnyville an inch, winning the game 4-0.

The first place battle for the Atoms had Swift Current face Bonnyville in an action-packed game of skating and stick handling. In the end Swift Current scored five goals to Bonnyville’s one, winning the Atom tournament.

Lloydminster would take on Wainwright in the Peewee final which saw Wainwright outscore the border city 3-1, and would see Wainwright take the Peewee title and marking the end of the girl’s tournament.

Bantam And Midget Hockey Tournament Sam Rothwell Reporter

As can usually be found on a chilly winter weekend in Alberta, the Vermilion hockey rink hosted a girls’ bantam and midget tournament from Friday night through Sunday morning. The stands were full with cheering parents, fans, and resting teams coaxing on their favourite teams and players. The tournament featured 4 pools in total (2 for bantam, and 2 for midget).

On the bantam side, the hometown Vermilion Tigers were one of three

teams in the gold pool. Their rivals for the tournament included the Sherwood Park Scream, and the EG710 Adrenaline. In the black pool, the Stettler Storm, Okotoks Oilers, and EG709 Predators made up the three teams.

In the gold pool, the Sherwood Park Scream gave up 2 points in their first game by narrowly losing out to the hometown Tigers 3-2. In Sherwood Park’s second game of the tournament, they had a 1-1 tie with the Adrenaline, giving the two teams a point each. In the black pool, the Oilers had a tough start, as they gave the hard working

Storm 2 points, losing 7-4.

The midget side had 6 teams as well, one of which was the Vermilion Tiger squad in the gold pool. The competition for the Tigers were the Onoway Eagles and the Beaverlodge Blades. In the black pool, the Lakeland Panthers, Lakeland Jaguars, and the Strathmore Storm made up the 3 team competition. In gold pool play, the Tigers upset

the Eagles 6-2, showing the hometown Tigers’ early dominate in both age groups. Black pool competition had the Jaguars domination the Panthers 7-1 taking 2 points for the effort. In that pool’s second game, the Jaguars nearly replicated their first result beating the storm 7-2 earning them their third and fourth points.

With registration for the race starting at 10 a.m., racers and cross country skiing enthusiasts alike flocked to the Vermilion Provincial Park this past Saturday, Feb. 1, for the day’s festivities. The registration desk attendants were quick to point racers towards the multiple waxing stations to prepare their skis. For those that registered early, they had an hour to prepare their equipment, change in to their racing gear, and make their way to the starting line.

With approximately 75 racers registered for the day’s races, the event site was packed. In addition to the excitement for the day’s events, everyone was thrilled to talk about Becky’s departure earlier that morning for Russia. She will be commentating for the CBC during the cross country events in Sochi at the upcoming Olympics later this month.

Once 10:50 rolled around, the real

teammates, family members, and friends as they began the grueling, hilly course.

In addition to the varying age groups, there were also differing course lengths to register for. The longest and most challenging course was the overall 30 kilometer category.

This year’s winner was Lukas Mark, who finished in a blistering time of 1:34:28.

A mere 3 minutes and 32 seconds later had second place Paul Moore crossing the finish line. To round out the top three, Cameron Raynor clocked in at a speedy 1:38:23.

In the overall 20 kilometer category, Tim Wintoniw pulled ahead of second place Helge Halvorsen and won by a mere 3 minutes 44 seconds to take the race in a time of 1:10:09.

When it came to the overall 10 kilometer race, Tyla Cooper managed to hold off the pack with a winning time of 37:49.

Of all the event’s races, this was the biggest nail biter, as second place Derek Stollery was a mere 49 seconds later at the finish line. Brian Loehr came in third

with a quick time of 39:38.

In the overall 5 kilometer, Caleb Ree took first in 26:51, with second place Sean Ulrich in 27:13. In third, Alex McCullough crossed the line in 29:26.

When it came to the overall 2.5 kilometer race, the Cardinals seemed to dominate, filling three of the top five spots, including Troy and Nathanial coming in firts and second. Third place was Noah Sanderson in just over 12 minutes.

In event fashion, racers were treated to post race pleasures. A delicious hot lunch of soup and rolls was served, and treats were available for the enjoying as well. Coffee and tea was provided if the adults needed a little warming up, and for the kids, hot chocolate was available to heat the belly.

All in all, there was something for everyone at the Becky Scott Loppett event this past Saturday. This event promises to remain a yearly fixture in Vermilion’s ever growing winter sporting scene.

All racing groups were to begin at 11 a.m. sharp with the jackrabbits (children’s group) starting behind the station building, and the youth to adult groups starting riverside at the bottom of the hill.

As racers and spectators made their way down the hill at the provincial park to the starting line, it was easy to see how carefully the trails had been groomed for the day by event planners.

With all groups of racers reaching their respective starting lines around five to eleven, an excited announcer boomed over a loudspeaker preparing racers for the starting horn. With the 30 second warning given verbally, racers of all ages took their marks. At the sound of the horn, racers bound through the starting line to begin the exciting race. Spectators lined the entire course to cheer on their
