She has been selling the specialty items for a number of years at craft and trade shows and also organizes the annual Innisfree Extravagant Spirit of Christmas Craft Sale and Show each year in Innisfree, which will take place on Dec. 8.

On Nov. 21, the Vermilion Public Library set the scene for teaching youth about life inside street gangs by hosting a book signing session with Alberta author, Eileen Schuh.

Schuh resides just outside of St. Paul, Alberta, but originally comes from the Tofield area. Her background as a psychiatric nurse combined with a background in journalism, may have contributed to her writing “The Backtracker” series of books.

Schuh said when she began writing the series she was at a low time in her life, adding the stories were never intended for anyone else’s eyes, but were rather a form of therapy for her as she worked through her personal issues at the time.

The self-published “ T h e Traz” te lls th e s to r y of Katrina, a young teen girl, who is intrigued by the rough and d a n g e ro u s g a n g l i fe s t y l e.

She quickly finds herself unable

to escape the Traz gang’s grip, until she meets Chad, an undercover cop. But there are secrets kept on both sides of the gang and Katrina is not sure who she can trust.

“The Traz” is the first of a nine book series for Schuh, two of which are already published. “The Traz” has also been published as a school edition for use as a teaching guide, and was followed by her second book, “Fatal Error.” Schuh said the third book of the series, “Firewalls,” should be released very soon.

Schuh added she tried to write the series as “true to the nature” of gang life, as the books do have explicit language content.

She has also written an adult book titled “Schrödinger’s Cat,” a psychological crime thriller. The storyline finds a woman, Chorie, caught between two worlds through the theor y of quantum physics. She must make a decision between the two lives and eventually does, only to have life strike back with a “dark

and unexpected” twist.

Schuh accredits much of her writing success to the support she has received from the community of St. Paul and surrounding area.

“Many stores in St. Paul are selling my books and some are not even charging a commission,” said Schuh.

Schuh’s book signing tour consists of 23-stops, sponsored by The Northern Lights Library System. The Vermilion Public Library was the second last stop of the tour.

RCMP

RCMP Reports vehicle collision involving 2 tractor trailer units. A semi pulling an empty “Super B” trailer was traveling westbound on Highway 16 when it drove into the centre median and crossed over into the east bound lanes and collided with a second semi pulling a car hauler. Both semi drivers were injured as a result of this collision however the extent of their injuries is unknown. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined and the matter is still under investigation.

Theft Of Fragrances The Lloydminster Municipal R.C.M.P. are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the four people responsible for a theft of fragrances from Shopper’s Drug Mart. On May 26, 2013, at approximately 7:52 PM two males and two females entered the store. The two males proceeded to the boutique area of the store taking numerous bottles of fragrances from the shelf. The two females appeared to continue shopping in the store and asking questions to the employees seemingly causing a distraction.

The value of the items taken is estimated at approximately $5000.00.

Winter Weather Brings Warm Hearts Karen Nedzielski Editor

December is right around the corner and it seems the weather is sure to remind us of that. The recent cold weather has people griping about the snow, icy streets and the hassle of bundling up in the many layers of clothing.

The frigid weather seems to be enough to push some people over the edge, as the winter vacation planning seems to kick into overdrive. Although it is only a brief week or two for some, it is indeed a reprieve from the punishment winter can dish out.

But for those who can’t seem to get the time off to sneak away, or can’t financially afford it, they will battle

through the snowing and blowing until Mother Nature brings back the springlike weather.

Along with the cold weather and icy streets, this past week also saw the annual Santa’s Anonymous toy and food drive kick-off for another year.

This reporter had a chance to chat with one of the Lions’ Club members, Cliff Rolheiser, as the donation boxes came out of storage at Vermilion Ready Mix’s office.

Each year the boxes are scattered throughout the businesses and organizations in Vermilion and surrounding area, but as the more than 40 boxes were stacked and organised for delivery, it became very apparent to me the enormous need for the program.

The Lions’ Club members disperse the boxes and the generosity of the community always seems to shine through the

grey, dismal winter weather in time to make the program recipients’ Christmas just a little bit better, and in some cases, possible.

Most of the recipients of the program, for one reason or another, are unable to provide their families with the Christmas many others take for granted. As simple as providing a small gift for their child or a decent meal sometimes is beyond their reach.

Each year the potential recipients apply to receive the benefits or can be anonymously recommended for the program, as many are too proud to admit they are in need of assistance.

However, there are those who try to abuse the system which is very sad to hear. Applications are carefully screened to make sure the need is in fact, there.

I was honoured to help with delivering a few of the boxes to some of the

outlying areas and when businesses were presented with them, many were concerned with the size of them. Not the fact that they were in the way, but rather if the boxes would be large enough to hold the many donations to come over the next few weeks. What a wonderful concern.

Many businesses and schools in the area have already begun the collection process and judging by the donations already waiting for the boxes, it will be another successful year for Santa’s Anonymous.

Vermilion and area truly are warm and giving communities, no matter what the weather outside is like.

After having an inside look at the program and what it offers many people in our community, I will be digging a little deeper into my pocket for Santa’s Anonymous program. How about you?

Santa Sighting At The Knights Of Columbus Breakfast

Children gathered around Santa’s lap at the annual Knights’ of Columbus pancake breakfast held on Nov. 24 at the Father Cadeau Centre located in St. Jerome School. This year’s event saw a steady stream of hungry eaters and children were able to sit with Santa Claus for a picture and give him the list of items they wished to receive on Christmas morning. Members of the Vermilion Knights of Columbus were serving up the pancakes, eggs, hash browns and sausages with all the proceeds of the event being donated to the Vermilion Play and Development, a non-profit organization which provides positive opportunities for children to learn through play activities. If one hasn’t been winterized as of yet, t h e -2 6 d e g r e e s Celsius with -37 degrees Celsius wind chill that we woke up to this morning, will certainly do that for you are whether you are ready or not.

Murphy loves winter because his claim to fame law…“Anything that can go wrong will go wrong” becomes a reality when it gets bitter cold.

This stands very true with vehicles or just about anything mechanical if exposed to the outdoors, always with the most inconvenient timing. If you listen, I am sure you can hear Murphy chuckling.

With most vehicles, battery maintenance and a fuel line antifreeze additive can solve half the problems many experience; two easy and quick winterizing factors that can protect you from Murphy.

Pulling a fast one on Murphy, the wife and I went and bought her a spanking brand new 2013 4X4 SUV vehicle. We had to listen to Murphy several times last winter, as we dug out her utility type two wheel drive van out of the heavy snow.

Although the van had anti-skid and traction control, equipped with winter tires, it still was no match for the snow drifts; this year I will feel a little more at ease.

Equipped with the new 4X4 SUV and her new cell phone, I can relax now when she is on the rural roads; something that was always on my mind as I have been stranded a few times in bitter cold.

However, that was usually due to being somewhere where I shouldn’t be on an

outdoor adventure and being a little less cautious because I always had a 4X4 vehicle.

Murphy has another, less known, law that states… “It’s impossible to make anything foolproof as fools are ingenious.”

Yup, I have proved that a few times.

I learned many years ago that if you can get a two wheel vehicle stuck, you can get a 4X4 really good and stuck, oh and cell phones don’t do any good sitting on the kitchen counter by the coffee pot when you’re good and stuck.

Also, cell phone batteries do die often so carry a charger in the vehicle. Cell phones will hibernate and as with all batteries, they will not work if you’re outdoors in the extreme cold. Keep them close to your body to keep them warm.

Regardless of how cold it is out there, one can dress for it and be toasty warm which makes any outdoor adventure that much more enjoyable. Most of us Canadians know that “looking cool” in winter sometimes gets darn right cold.

Dressing right is a lot more comfortable nowadays, and you can even look “cool” in the cold since even the old dependable clothing has improved a lot since the old baggy look days. There are also so many new materials that are available to choose from now.

I can remember as a youngster being so bundled up one couldn’t do much but stand there because you didn’t want to fall down or you might not get back up by yourself.

New synthetic underclothings as well as newer blends of wool “base layer” or underwear worn as a first layer are amazing now; we Canadians know dressing in

layers very well.

The base layer should wick away moisture due to body heat or simple perspiration, yet keep one warm even when damp or wet. The material even breathes yet is somewhat windproof.

Polyester and microfiber based fabrics such as “Thinsulate” are great choices as they do not absorb moisture, but transfer it away from the body very well. I love the Merino wool; wool garments that are as soft and comfortable as fleece.

Merino wool is as warm as standard wool, but softer and more comfortable and without the itch. I wear wool socks almost every month of the year.

Although not as waterproof and fast drying as the synthetic materials, even damp merino wool will keep you warm. I have several sets of base layer merino wool undergarments from light to heavy.

Wool is also a great “mid” layer because it provides “thermal insulation” as warm air is trapped between the layers of clothing. However, my favourite is fleece; it is lighter than wool but provides the same benefits. It is also less restricting than synthetic materials, for full movement and comfort.

I would have to say the majority of my outdoor clothing is fleece, I tend to shy away from cotton products; it takes forever to dry when wet.

The final layer or “shell layer” ideally should provide waterproof and windproof

properties but should still be breathable.

While modern synthetics provide this the best, there is always a slight trade-off between breathability, waterproofing and wind resistance.

I am fond of Thinsulate garments that have a fleece outer layer. While not 100 per cent waterproof, they are water resistant enough to keep me dry in most winter conditions and are warm and comfortable for hunting.

As I am sure I have mentioned before, if my feet get cold, I am done…I freeze. So, last year I invested in some quality boots, -100 degrees Celsius below boots, all synthetic, but no bigger than felt or wool lined boots rated for much less.

They are super light, toasty warm and so comfortable…bring it on!

The above with a warm fleece neck sock or gaiter, and warm trapper style hat…both very important as 75 per cent of body heat is lost from neck and head, and I’m ready for any negative temperature.

Layer up and get out there, winter is half our Canadian lifestyle, so enjoy it.

When the Smoke Clears If it wasn’t for winter, I wouldn’t know what laying all snuggled up in front of a wood burning fireplace, so toasty and relaxed… was all about!

The Vermilion Folk Club hosted one of three open mic nights that happened throughout the year. Treasurer Gwen Gochee, said that it was a great opportunity to see the talent that the Vermilion area has to offer.

It’s funny how just a thought of this malady brings back so many memories of past experiences where this condition held sway and left me totally unable to function in a sane manner. I guess if the excitement of the hunt and all that entails didn’t touch you, why would you even bother? My Dad used to tell stories of men whose guns would flop around like a limp noodle when a huge moose would suddenly appear and the sights would blur and the moose would go its way unscathed after the gun was empty and useless, and would only return to its normal form once the brush had swallowed the game! I can recall the sweat and pounding heart and being unable to breathe normally. Yes it was “Buck Fever”. You‘d think that after years of hunting and being in contact with big game in its natural setting that the incidence of such behavior would

diminish or you’d get to be immune, but some unforeseen circumstance happening at the wrong time would get the whole scenario touched off again, really!

Mom’s second husband Sam, loved to hunt deer and he’d journey out from Edmonton with son Allen, to enlist me to guide them. I remember one instance when a magnificent whitetail buck suddenly appeared across a ravine as we drove up in my truck. I tried to show them where it was standing in the silver willows. Sam was so agitated walking back and forth and by the time the deer was standing in the open, Sam had jacked all the shells from his gun, and cussing told me his “gun was jammed”. The deer bounded away leading his charmed life.

We had a big manure pile where all the barn cleanings were hauled every day. Beyond the pile, any casualties of barnyard stock were left for coyote bait and the manure pile was used as a cover so you could sneak up and maybe get a crack at a coyote. I’d sneak up there

early mornings and evenings, and sure enough there’d often be old Wily there looking for a snack. Well you know in my younger age the sight of a coyote there, would get my heart pumping and I’d be puffing but the rifle just wouldn’t steady down. My eyes would water so bad I could hardly see. I just couldn’t seem to steady down and just shoot one. I’d target practice and I’d get so I could hit the heads of nails and I’d think next time I get a shot at a coyote he’ll just keel over dead. Buck fever kept the coyotes safe for quite awhile it seemed.

The only thing that I could hit, were gophers, black birds and other animals of no value. Once it got value like a prairie chicken or bush partridge that old excitement would take hold and my gun wouldn’t hold steady!

For years I shot, hunted and gained some confidence and slowly became a little cooler headed and was able to bear down and steady my rifle enough to har vest coyotes, deer, several moose and even an elk and a mountain sheep. Yes it did take a lot of shooting

and hunting but still there lurking in the background are the means to bring on all the game saving scenario. Just have something go wrong and sure enough the Buck Fever will manifest itself. In the time I guided for Russ Thornberry I witnessed seasoned hunters with the best gear money would buy, simply come unglued when the trophy of a lifetime presented itself. It was comical to watch, but you didn’t want to give in to having a laugh. It wouldn’t be healthy to even kid them about it. I had a wealthy American with me one morning after he’d perhaps had maybe too long of a happy hour the night before, when out of nowhere a real trophy tail buck appeared. I glanced over at Leo and he was fast asleep. I reached over and shook him awake and immediately that he saw the dear he bailed out of the truck and fell flat on his pratt. By the time he got straightened out the deer was in full flight and he never came anywhere near hitting it, another bad case of BUCK FEVER.

The funds will be used by the depar tment to purchase a Bullard T3 thermal imaging camera that reveals hidden fire and distinguishes hotter objects.

The County of Minburn Fire Depar tment provides fire protection and rescue services to residents of the east central Alberta county though the three fire departments operating within the boundaries. The Federal Government this week introduced Bill C-13, intended, according to the press release, to address the problem of cyberbullying. Critics have already raised concerns, warning that the Bill includes clauses that threaten personal privacy and have no recognizable relevance to cyberbullying. It is, at least, a response to a call for change.

Augmenting the televised announcement of the Bill, images of teens Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd stare out at viewers. How could anyone NOT support legislation intended to protect innocents like these from becoming targets for heartless online creeps?

Bullying is among the most unsavoury tools of oppression, usually practised by persons who imagine that gaining power correlates to robbing another of his or her dignity. That bullying rages on in cyberspace mostly unchecked is a sad testament to how relatively little our culture has advanced in matters of pure humanity. It ought to, and it does concern every one of us.

In the beginning and at its best, the internet allowed people to interact with others utilizing the shield of anonymity. In a world where assessment of value so often depends upon physical appearances, the early internet temporarily disabled that factor, allowing for a freeflow exchange of ideas without its distraction. Exciting times. The narcissism of social media, a rising popularity of personal devices, fascination with instant communication, ever more revealing selfies, and an obsession with voyeurism returned us to the base rules.

Those possessing perceived beauty and popularity are worthy; those average and/or not deemed so desirable are game for ridicule. And the sinister, arrhythmic beat goes on.

The movement encouraging gender equality is not now nor has it ever been so much about women throwing off their underclothes, eschewing traditional roles, or joining a rabid women’s only club called Man-Eaters. It is about enabling women, from their earliest years, to define themselves, and to understand that their worth is self-determinate, independent of any third party. That they may achieve, through educational and occupational pursuits, any goal to which they may aspire, without obstacle or limitation due solely to gender. Empowering women does not translate, as some might fear, into emasculating men. True power encourages self-confidence and the empowerment of others; it does not seek to extinguish it. Boys and men,

who wrestle with their own challenges in bullyworld, might feel relieved to be able to drop the tiresome and stereotypical role of the insatiable pursuer, exchanging it instead for one that encourages functioning as a whole person, however that goal might be achieved after all the fumbling of pretense women and men alike have endured in their sometimes mutually oppressive roles.

New legislation may empower our judiciary to charge, convict, and jail more alleged perpetrators, but it cannot ensure bully-safe communities. True safety begins with a population deciding it’s time to alter attitudes. Up with men who interact with women more often for their humanity than for mere titillation and objectification. Up with women who develop a capacity to think and act with confidence borne of self-respect and belief in their own intrinsic value. Up with better people. Up with mutually respectful humanity, period.

This winter was in a hurr y to get here and equally rushed to plunge us into arctic temperatures; it even hit minus 30 one night as I was driving home from work, brrr.

Even though the cold weather means spending more time indoors, winter evenings are great for watching an interesting show or visiting with friends and family.

As the holidays approach, there are often more opportunities for entertaining. One of my customers this week was telling me about her recent trip to Jasper Park Lodge where several celebrity chefs were sharing their exper-

tise on holiday entertaining ideas. She told me of an hors d’oeurvre that one of the chefs made of dried prunes, slit open and then stuffed with cheese and wrapped in cooked bacon, secured with a tooth pick. It sounded yummy. The chef suggested that you can use many types of cheese for this creative finger food.

This week my recipe focuses on hummus, a popular dip and party food that is quick and easy to make. You can buy hummus ready-made in several grocery stores, but if you make your own, you will sidestep all the additives and preservatives in the premade versions. I think that homemade hummus tastes better anyway.

This dish has its origins in the Middle East and Morocco, where it is often eaten with flatbread such as pita. When

hummus is eaten with a grain cracker or pita it has the benefit of creating a complete protein with the chickpeas and sesame seed paste in the recipe.

Chick peas are also called garbanzo beans. The great thing about chick peas is that they improve both cholesterol and blood sugar. A recent study on the World’s Healthiest Foods website noted that one third of a cup of chick peas a day for one week improves blood sugar and insulin response.

Chick peas are also high in fibre, molybdenum, manganese, folate, iron, antioxidants and feel good tryptophan. Sesame seeds contain significant amounts of important phytosterols that also help reduce blood cholesterol and enhance the immune system to help prevent certain cancers.

Hummus 1 can chickpeas (15 oz) Juice of half a lemon 2 tablespoons of tahini (sesame seed paste) 1 to 2 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoon olive oil 6 -7 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon cumin (optional) Put all ingredients into a blender or food processor, and blend until smooth. If you use a blender and the mixture is not blending well, add an additional tablespoon or two of water to get the blender moving. Serve with fresh veggies for dipping or various types of chips or crackers.

Our first meeting took place on Oct. 17 at the Kitscoty Jr/Sr. High School. On Nov. 2, the club attended the Greenwood 4H Grooming Competition at the Lloydminster Exhibition grounds during the 2013 Stockade Roundup. On Nov. 12 the club held its monthly meeting and weigh-in day where our 2013-2014 elections were

held.

Lakeland’s Centennial Century Club Hits 50 Lakeland College Submitted

Lakeland College’s Centennial Century Club is half full for the 100th anniversary, with the rest of the inductees being announced over the course of the next year.

The most recent inductees were announced Saturday during the Next 100 Years celebration in Vermilion.

“This batch of 17 inductees cover people, places and things,” says Cathy Wolters, co-chair of the centennial’s historical acknowledgement committee. “It’s fitting on our 100th anniversary that two of those inductees are the father of the Schools of Agriculture, Duncan Marshall, and the official opening on Monday November 17, 1913.”

Another iconic building in the college’s history is included twice on the list: Once for when the dormitory building was constructed in 1928 and again for when it was destroyed by fire in 1985.

The addition of the former Alberta

Fire Training Schools to the college was also added to the Century Club.

Some interesting staff and alumni were also included. They are: • Colonel Eric Cormack, namesake of the Vermilion Recreation Centre, a veteran of both world wars who taught and was dean of men.

• The British, or Hoadley, Boys, a group of English immigrants in the mid-1920s who came for agricultural training.

• E.B. Swindlehurst, Class of ‘30 and longtime Alberta Agriculture staffer, who wrote a history of Alberta’s Schools of Agriculture in 1964.

• William Mead, Class of ‘27, namesake of the agricultural science building, a member of Alberta Agriculture’s Hall of Fame and an Alberta Award of Excellence winner.

• Norah Carey who oversaw the girls

wing and then was residence manager between 1968 and 1980.

• Hartman Nagel, Class of ‘60, a Peace Country farmer who was a long time Unifarm director as well as alumni association president.

• Robert McLeod, Class of ‘89, a distinguished alumnus who took carpentry at Lakeland and returned to the Northwest Territories and became involved in community action and politics.

• John Morris, Class of 2006, Olympic curling gold medalist and distinguished alumnus, who took firefighting training.

• Doug Elliott, two-term chair of Lakeland College’s board of governors, whose commitment to students and stability piloted the college through the turn of the 21st century.

Other new Century Club members are: • John from Craig’s Vermilion. The

business and Stewart families have supported the college since its inception including with scholarships, the annual PBR event and an interior design student gallery.

• Acquisition of Barrhill Farms whose crop and pasture land are used by agriculture and environment sciences students and farmstead was turned into the Centre for Sustainable Innovation’s (CSI) headquarters.

Mannville 4H Multi Club Holds Potluck Meeting And Awards Payton Konieczny, Mannville 4H Club Submitted On Nov. 14 the Multi Club had a meeting and awards night at the Rec Center.

We started the evening off with a pot-luck supper. We discussed jackets, what we want to do for a Christmas party, decorating the hall for Christmas and dates were given out for District activities. Nov. 29 to 30 is both the Fall Fling and Venture Out activity in Lac La Biche. We will be sending a volleyball team on Dec. 8 to the Regional Tournament.

The Woodworking project members reported that they visited Lakeland College on Oct. 30 for a demo. They were given pieces of wood that had the 4H symbol on it. On Nov. 13 they went to their leader, Mr. Specks’ shop to sand and finish them into key holders.

The Horse project members reported that they had a meeting on Nov. 6, a riding clinic in Wainwright at Sage Hill Stable on Nov. 11 and are busy making crafts and treats to sell at the Extravaganza in

Mannville on Dec. 7. We will have lots of neat things for sale, even horse soap that was made just by our club!

At the clinic they got a riding and trail lesson from Sherry Engerdahl. Thanks Sherry! They had a farrier lesson from Mr. Bader. They also learned about a horse’s body composition, respiration, temperature and pulse. They learned what a normal number is and how to find it. The temperature one was a little gross! Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Bader for hauling all of the ponies to Wainwright for us.

The Sheep project reported that they (along with others from our Multi Club) attended the CFR in Edmonton and had a great time. There are a lot of displays to see and things to do. They also gave out their awards from last year’s projects.

Grand Champion Market Lamb went to Reanne Ewashko with Reserve Market Lamb going to Courtney Jackson. Grand Champion Ewe was awarded to Courtney Jackson and Reserve Champion Ewe went to Davin Charron.

Santa’s Anonymous Collection Gets Underway Karen Nedzielski Reporter

It’s that time of year again. Yes, the holiday season is fast approaching and with that comes the annual S a nta’s An o nym o u s toy a n d fo o d drive.

The boxes will be placed at numerous businesses and organizations throughout Vermilion as well as Innisfree, Mannville, Clandonald and Islay.

Lions Club member Cliff Rolheiser said there are more than 40 boxes where donations can be deposited and also numerous “Loonie Ducks” where monetary donations can also be made.

Rolheiser said last year Santa’s A n o ny m o u s p rov i d e d s u p p o r t to approximately 85 families in need of either food or toys, or both, in the Vermilion and surrounding areas.

Application can be made to receive the support of Santa’s Anonymous

and all are screened to ensure the need is in fact there. Rolheiser said th e a p p lic a nt s a re all ch e cke d to e n s u re th ey m e e t th e p ro g r a m ’s criteria as the system can, and has been, abused in the past.

The boxes will be at the various locations until Dec. 18 at which time they will be collected and taken to the ATCO building to be sorted. The dispersing of the toys and food will take place just before Christmas.

J.R. Robson Sports Teams Celebrate Well Played Seasons On Wednesday, Nov. 20, the VIBE Youth Advisory went to the Vermilion Lodge to help put up the Christmas trees. After the trees were put together, the students played Rollie

Ball with the seniors. The Youth Advisory really looks forward to their time at the lodge and are already talking about what they can do for next time.

It’s that time of year again! J.R. Robson has decorated a beautiful and unique tree for the Festival of Trees.

Please keep an eye out for our tree and vote for us as the show favorite. All proceeds raised go towards

supporting the breakfast program.

Mary Lambert Entertains Nick O’Dea Reporter M a r y L a m b e r t, a J u n o Awa rd nominated artist, performed for the first time in Vermilion this past week for an enthusiastic group of children.

L a m b e r t, wh o p e r fo r m s a cro s s Canada and has been in the business for 20 years, said it all began by singing to her youngest son.

“I was just singing to him one night

before he went to bed and my friend overheard,” she said. “She was in the performance industry and asked me if I wanted to perform with her at a show.”

Lamber t said she was surprised a t t h e o f fe r, b u t w a s eve n m o r e surprised when she found out that over 200 children were attending.

From that moment on she was hooked and after moving to a new place, she found herself in need of some work.

“I needed some part-time work and

I just wanted to do something that I enjoyed and I really enjoyed performing for kids,” she said. “Before this I went to school to be an office administrative assistant.”

Lamber t said that the skills she learned in school, such as organization, computer skills, and dealing with the public, have been a lot of help in her current endeavours.

Her favorite part of her show is the interaction that she has with each child. “ I t ’ s a v e r y h a n d s- o n s h o w. I have kids get up with me and sing and dance,” she said. “It gets them involved and smiling more, but it also lets them be the stars of the show.”

O ne of Lamb er t ’s ac ts is her own take on “Old MacDonald.” She selected five children from the audience to sound out the noises of a pig, bird, horse, lamb, and chicken.

But it was her rendition of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” in which she added a few different choices like elbows and backside that got everyone to participate. The parents in the crowd struggled to keep up, but the children caught on rather quick.

“I like to see them smile and have a good time. It’s the whole reason why I do what I do,” she said. “I love when they come up to me after the show and want a hug or an autograph. I can never get enough of it.”

Children’s Festival Nick O’Dea Reporter The value of playtime for small children goes beyond entertainment. It creates a healthy environment that children feel comfortable learning in and, as a result, become excited about pursuing future educational opportunities.

The Vermilion Children’s Festival was put on by the Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition and it took place at the Lakeland College Recreation Center on Nov. 17.

Early Childhood Development Coalition Coordinator Sheri Heller said the early years are the most crucial in the development of a child’s intelligence as well as their perspective on learning.

“When you interact with a child at a very young age they learn many things from you. How to show emotion, how to socialize, how to play, it’s all very important,” she said. “If you make learning fun for a child, they are more likely to continue to want to learn. That carries on into their schooling and their future lives.”

Heller said that the Early Childhood Development Coalition has created a new booklet that helps parents learn how to

Heller said that interactive toys are much better for early education than the norm of video games, which children are starting to play at a younger and younger age.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES Learns About Reducing, Reusing and Recycling VES students generously contributed items for Operation Christmas Child this year. As a school, we sent away 45 boxes and had extra items to donate to Santa’s Anonymous.

We welcome four young ladies to our school who are working on their p ra c ti c u m co u r s e s th ro u g h th e i r college/university degrees and certificates. Miss Garton and Miss McKinnon are here working on their Early Childhood practicums, and Miss Hoffman

and Miss Berg are working on their IPT courses. All three ladies will be with us until Dec. 13. We wish them all the best as they complete their courses.

On Nov. 19, the Grade 4 students went on a field trip to learn about how to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in Vermilion. They really appreciated having the Vermilion Recycling Center show them the items that can be recycled.

Students were amazed at how much cardboard is bailed weekly to be recycled. Also, they learned how important it is to properly sort their recycling (cans, plastic, paper, cardboard). The students also thank the Waste Transfer Station who toured them around as well. The garbage building was smelly,

but they learned about the important work the station does to help recycle computers, oil, tires, metal, and paint.

As the bus drove them through town, the students were shown the Bottle Depot and Community Closet in their travels. Vermilion is definitely doing its part to help the environment.

O n N o v. 2 0 t h e K i n d e r g a r t e n classes had the opportunity to visit the Vermilion Public Library and see Mary Lambert in concert. The concert, entitled “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, was lots of fun and the students were all engaged in movement and singing.

Our Kinder kids have been very busy learning about “Bears”. Students have learned about different kinds of bears and their habits. On Nov. 29, students will be able to bring their own favorite Teddy Bear to school for the day.

Sam, from Science in Motion, delivered an excellent, interactive program to our students in Grades 3-6 on Nov. 19 and 20. Grade 3 had fun sorting a wide variety of minerals during their “Gravel, Grit, and Grime” session, while Grade 4 got to build some amazing simple machines. The Grade fives tested several substances to determine the identity of a mystery substance in “Who Haz What?” The Grade sixes went inside an inflatable planetarium to learn about our night sky. Throughout both days, anyone in the school was able to work on brainteaser puzzles set out on tables in the hallway.

Sports Day/Jersey Day will be held on Nov. 29. This will be a day of fun and activity for staff and students.

Anyone who wears a jersey will earn a point for their House. The afternoon will be filled with activities within their House Leagues. Weather permitting we will host the activities outdoors.

Boys Volleyball Hosts Zone Finals What a generous community St. Jerome’s School. We have been busy raising funds for the relief in the Philippians. The school spent the last two weeks filling up large water bottles, having bakes sales, and participating in Charity Friday. We were able to raise just over $1,000 which will be matched by the Knights of Columbus and the Canadian Government. Well done, St. Jerome’s!

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the hallways were full of neon bright colours as students dressed up for “Bright and Tight” Day. Everyone had a fun time dressing up in the brightest, most noticeable clothes they could.

Cindy House and her puppet Rebecca visited St. Jerome’s students from Kindergar ten to Grade six to teach the children about bus safety.

The children learned proper behaviour on the bus, how to enter and exit correctly, and how to do an emergency exit out the backdoor.

The students got a ride in a combine and fork lift and lifted a big machine with a chain hoist. The Thursday group even got to see the inside of a tractor.

All the children saw lots of tools and learned what a combine does. They learned that Webb’s recycles used oil and burns it in their furnace to heat their shop. They also recycle rags.

After all the activities were completed the children washed their hands and all came back to school smelling like oranges (Orange Fast Go Hand Wash).

It was a great trip. The children were impressed that Webb’s even sells toy tractors. A big thank you to Webbs.

On Friday, Nov. 22 a Pep Rally was held to cheer on the Sr. Boys and Girls Volleyball teams as they headed into Zones this past weekend. All of the Jr. High and Sr. High players were introduced as the rest of the school community cheered them on. They traveled to Myrnam this weekend to par ticipate in zones. The Sr. Boys hosted zones at St. Jerome’s this weekend.

The Sr. Girls hosted districts last weekend and went undefeated beating Paradise Valley in the finals.

Mannville School Collecting For Santa’s Anonymous And Stollery December is quickly approaching and staff and students are looking towards Christmas and all the activities at the school. The Grad class are starting their preparations for its annual Christmas Banquet which will be held on Dec. 17 this year. Tickets are already available from local Mannville businesses and any Grade twelve student. Of course follow-

ing the Banquet is our Christmas Concert starting at 7 p.m.

The “Snow Angels” return this year.

Our Grade 7 and 9 leadership classes will be starting to shovel snow for people in our community who are unable to do so.

They will also be doing this as random acts of kindness in hopes that people will pay it forward. Please be aware that this is not a service but a kindness.

The “Big Buck” contest has been organized by Lucas Amero and Blake Laurenceson in our Grade nine leadership class. Our students are competing to see who can get the best buck during

the hunting season. Mr. Kevin John has agreed to come in and score our bucks and judge trail camera pictures. Good luck to all entries!

Also this year we are holding a Stollery Toy Run. We are collecting toys until Dec. 6 to fill our Santa’s Anonymous bin and donating the excess to the Stollery Hospital so that both sick children and less fortunate people in our community can have a jolly Christmas. Please

December also brings changes to our Phys Ed program for both elementary and secondary students. Elementary will start skating on Tuesday and Thursdays in the morning and secondary students will start skating in the afternoons.

Starting on Dec. 9, on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays the secondary students will be curling.

The Sr. Girls Volleyball season wrapped up in Vermilion at District play-downs.

The girls braved the icy road conditions and made their way to the St. Jerome’s gym to play five volleyball games. The girls came up against some tough teams and made their way to the semi-final round against St. Jerome’s. Losing a tough game, unfortunately the Royals do not move on and will close their volleyball season. Miss Almberg would like to congratulate all players on a job well done and thank each player for their time and commitment throughout the volleyball season. The team would also like to thank the parents and fans who came out to support the team at volleyball games and tournaments.

The Elementary Phys Ed classes finished off their Be Fit For Life Program in an unique way. Curtis Gorkoff, Be Fit For Life Co-ordinator, arrived with some fire fighters that he is training at the college. Students ended up doing an obstacle course with the firefighters and got to see and try on their gear as a treat to wrap up the program.

Area Farmers Question Proposed “Project N“ Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Will “Project N” come to a town near you? That was one of the main questions brought forth by area farmers who attended the meeting put on by the Farmers of North America (FNA) on Nov. 21 at the Mannville Rec Centre. How far would each member have to travel to purchase fertilizer from the proposed memberowned facility?

F N A i s a n a l l i a n c e o f fa r m e r s who say their objective is to improve farm profitability amongst its members.

The organization operates similar to a co-op and helps its members by negotiating discounts on products and services through a national network of suppliers.

These suppliers include oil and lubricants dealers, tire suppliers, equipment parts and implement technology dealers, animal

husbandry products as well as grain storage options.

Farmers who purchase a three year membership can access the products at a discounted rate. Products are delivered directly to the farm with a turnaround time of approximately a week from the time of ordering to delivery.

FNA did not just hold the meeting to offer the memberships, it was offering current and new members the option of buying shares in a proposed nitrogen plant referred to as “Project N.” The project is to be located within Western Canada, although the proposed location could not be disclosed at the time of the meeting.

The $1.76 billion dollar project is being pursued at the request of the organization’s members. FNA Vice President Terry Drabiuk said a poll taken in 2010 revealed that 74 per cent of its members wanted to look into the option of a farmerowned fertilizer plant.

“Project N” would also operate on a membership basis, and FNA Vice President Terry Drabiuk said the members would have access to more affordable fertilizer all within a one hour radius of their farming operations. This would be made possible by the construction of numerous “super centres” where the actual blending of fertilizer products would take place.

Members have the option of “buying in” to the project by purchasing a limited number of Seed Capital Units (SCU), with each member eligible to purchase a maximum of ten SCU. The meeting attendees posed the question: “What if the price of fertilizer goes up and we have already bought into the project?”

Drabiuk responded by ensuring them they are essentially buying product from themselves, which offers a return similar to a dividend. It is a “cash cow” Drabiuk said.

Although there were a number of skeptics in attendance, there were also a number of very interested possible members as Drabiuk said the project is a “risk investment.”

Local farmer Willey Sargent said both he and his son previously bought memberships with FNA and felt it had paid for itself through the purchase of the numerous discounted products.

The proposed “Project N” has a targeted 2017 date to begin manufacturing fertilizer products should the number of SCU be reached.

Winter Fair Fun Nick O’Dea Reporter

The Winter Fair is back in the Town of Vermilion.

The event was star ted last year by the Town of Vermilion initiative, The Good Life Institute and its Event C o o rd i n ato r, G e of frey P e r s o n, i s hoping this year’s event will top the last one.

“We had some big hits last year, but there were also some not so big hits,” he said. “It gave us a clear idea of which ones to carry over to this year’s event but we also wanted to have new ideas each time.”

Person said that one of the highlights of last year was a snowmobile expo that showcased vintage and new machines.

“It was really interesting to see how the snowmobiles had changed over the years,” he said. “People really liked that event and it was a big hit.”

O n D ec. 6 and 7, the G oo d Life Institute will be hosting a variety of events that are aimed at different demographics. On Friday, Dec. 6, the “Winter Fair Wine and Cheese” event will take place between 5 p.m.-10 p.m.

Person said that this is one of his favourite functions and added, “It g ive s p e o p l e i n th e co m m u n i t y a chance to come out and enjoy some great refreshments and become social with other citizens from the area. Many people don’t enjoy being out in the cold, so this one will be an ideal event for them to attend.”

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the “Create

a G i n g e r b re a d CN Stati o n” eve nt will take place. It will be hosted by professional baker Kathy Bowtell who has recreated Vermilion’s iconic CN Station in gingerbread. She will lead a class of bakers through the process of m a ki n g th ei r own re p li c a. T h e whole process, including decorative icing and working with fondant, will be covered. Registration is $30.

A new idea that was brought to the attention of Person by a local citizen was “Snow Pitch.” The idea is to play a slow-pitch game of softball in the snow. “ It was a cool idea when it was

St. Jerome Volleyball Tournament

St. Jerome hosted an amazing weekend of Sr. Boys Volleyball. Eight teams from the Northeast Zone battled for top spot to win the NE Zone Banner, the Gold Medal and the berth to represent our Zone at Provincials in Edmonton starting Thursday, November 28. The Two Hills Tigers took the ST. Jerome’s Spartans to a third game but the Spartans were not to be beat, defeating Two HIlls in the third set. Congratulations to the 13 members of the Sr. Boys Spartans.

GRADERMAN

This is a full-time permanent position with responsibilities that will include: • Summer and winter maintenance on all County roads including but not limited to: grading of roads to standard guidelines; patching minor holes; observing and making recommendations on gravel requirements and repairs if needed; snow removal and scraping of icy roads • Daily servicing of equipment • Adherence to County Safety Program • Inspecting County roads and reporting any issues that need attention such as signs, culverts, washouts, etc.

HEAVY DUTY MECHANIC

LEVEL 1 WATER AND SEWER OPERATOR

The game was filled with penalties and one injury that caused the Tigers’ player to be helped off the ice. On Nov. 22 the Vermilion Tigers took on the Lloydminster Bandits. Tigers’ player (pictured above) Randy Simmons and Bandits’ player Brody Pollard collided before taking out the net at the past Jr.B Game.

Bandits’ player Chris Romanchuk slipped past the Tigers’ defenseman to score the Bandits’ fourth goal on the Tigers’ goalie Brendan McCambly. The game became more competitive after that goal with the Tigers scoring two straight goals in the third period to tie up the game and send it into overtime.

Unfortunately the Tigers lost the game in the last 50 seconds of overtime.
