Remember The Sacrifice Nick O’Dea Reporter St. Jerome’s Catholic School held their annual Remembrance Day assembly on Nov. 8, which featured a variety of tributes to mark the occasion.

M a s te r s of C e re m o n i e s , K a thleen Dieken and Rory Wheat, began by addressing the importance of honouring the fallen as well as those who are still serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.

The attendees stood while Samantha Karwandy sang “O Canada.” Principal Allen Chase read a message from MP

Leon Benoit that stressed the importance of Remembrance Day and how it should be honoured by each citizen.

Flanders Field was recited by a group of Grade 5 students followed by a reading of “Please Wear a Poppy.”

A short video presentation, created

by Matthew Pulyk, featured a representative from the Canadian Armed Forces

who encouraged the audience to “never forget those who lost their lives, their limbs, and their mental health.”

After the video, the Act of Remembrance began with Kevin Sommer reading the ode. The Last Post was then played followed by a two minute silence dedicated to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lament and Reveille were played before each class had representatives bring their wreaths to the front and lay them around several crosses.

The ceremony ended with a rendition of “God Save the Queen,” after which bag-piper Barry Roth lead the representatives from The Lieutenant Colonel Craig Armoury, Royal Canadian Legion, Vermilion Cadets and others out of the gymnasium.

Principal Allen Chase said there is not

enough we can do to honour those who helped shape the quality of life that we enjoy today.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to show the children what it’s all about and how much it matters to all of us.”

He said the ceremony was excellent and that he would like to thank all the veterans, Legion members, speakers, and volunteers for their dedicated work.

Master Corporal Tristan Gagne said that Remembrance Day should never be forgotten and neither should all the sacrifices that were made.

“It’s important to remember that without these people our quality of life would be very different,” he said. “We may never have seen Canada become the country that it is today.”

J.R. Robson Honours Students With Awards Nick O’Dea Reporter On Nov. 8, J.R. Robson High School held its annual Awards Night dedicated to honouring students who excelled in certain or all areas of study.

The awards were handed out for a variety of subjects including Science, English, Math, Physical Education, as well as overall averages.

Principal Lindsay Bates said that the event was a great opportunity to show students that the faculty and community care about their well being, and their educational choices.

“We have scholarships that will ease the burden for these students because not everyone has family that lives in the place where they are doing post-secondary education. They need money to have a place to live and to pay for supplies and other things,” he said. “Many of these awards come with monetary bonuses which some of the local businesses have graciously donated for them to further their education.”

work that its students have put into their schooling.

Another incentive students can receive is the Alexander Rutherford scholarship fund that is given by the province of Alberta for students who achieve an average of 80 per cent or higher in either Grades 10, 11, or 12.

If the student achieves the average

in consecutive years, they are awarded more than the previous year. The minimum amount is $500 and the maximum is $2,500. It goes directly towards the costs of post-secondary education.

“Tuition is a big expense on these children and they need every bit of help they can get,” he said. “Many students cannot afford to do post-secondary without

Out of the 44 graduates J.R. Robson had last year, 19 of them were able to garner the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. Out of the 19 that received the scholarship, 15 had earned the maximum amount in their scholarship. A total of 338 awards were handed out at the event.

Think Barley At This Fall’s Farmer Meetings Cole Christensen Submitted Alberta’s barley farmers will be gathering from all across the province this fall to find out how their organization is working for them.

“Our industry is what we make it and farmers’ involvement is key to our success,” said Alberta Barley Chairman Matt Sawyer. “We encourage our members to come out to our regional meetings and learn about the exciting work we’re doing.”

Alberta Barley’s regional meetings take place throughout November, giving producers a chance to learn about the events of the past year, including updates on research and market development. This year’s meetings are paired with the Alberta Wheat Commission and the Alberta Pulse Growers Commis-

sion at select locations.

Elections also take place at each meeting, giving farmers the opportunity to select their Alberta Barley directors and delegates. This year, there are three potential elections for directors (region three, region four and one director-at-large position). Delegate positions are available in all six regions.

“Whether you plan to run or vote, we encourage all of our members to participate in our elections,” said Sawyer. “We are a farmer-directed organization and we need those farmers’ voices to be heard.”

Following the regional meetings, Alberta Barley’s annual general meeting will take place on Dec. 5, 2013 in Banff.

Attendees will hear about a variety of industry-related topics, including end point royalties, international trade, research and consumer outreach.

Dark Days Of Winter Karen Nedzielski Editor

The dark days of winter are definitely upon us as we recently plunged into the end of daylight savings time (DST).

Many people say they have difficulty adjusting to the time change and say it takes days for them to get used to the extra hour of sleep.

There are also those who say they look forward to gaining the extra hour of snoozing and don’t mind the shadows falling earlier in the evening.

My personal experience with DST is that I can’t seem to get that extra hour of sleep. When my internal clock tells me it’s time to get up… it’s time to get up.

Most however, will agree on one common idea...it is a bother to

remember to flip the clocks back and forth for each of the changes.

The idea of DST was proposed in the late 1800s and was first implemented by a few countries in Europe on April 30, 1916.

Many par ts of the United States used DST in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and the use of it expanded after the 1970’s energy crisis.

The theory of adding daylight to evenings was to benefit retail stores, s p o r t s , a n d o th e r a c ti v i ti e s th a t required sunlight beyond the working hours of the average person. It can also cause problems for some activities or occupations that require the sun.

For the commuter who travels any distance for work, this can mean the trip to-and-from the job may be done in complete darkness. This adds an extra element of hazard particularly

this time of year when wild animals approach the ditches, in search of easier places to graze and also lick the salt laid down to help clear the ice from the driving lanes.

If you don’t have some bright lights you could end up with a new, unexpected hood ornament. At the same time, the newer light systems installed on vehicles can also pose a hazard.

Some lights shine a bright-blue beam which is great for that driver, but hard on the oncoming traffic.

Th e re a re a lso th e d rivers wh o refuse to dim their high beams. It is only common courtesy, and law, to dim your lights to the oncoming traffic. Some drivers flick their high beams at oncoming vehicles, signalling them to dim their lights. This is probably not the best as now you have two vehicles meeting each other that are partially blinded by the lights.

The shorter days and longer nights can play a big part in a person’s mental health. Some people experience a “seasonal depression” from the lack of sunshine during the winter months.

Many plan that winter getaway to a warm spot south of the border to help alleviate the symptoms and shorten their number of days in winter lockdown.

This year we are fortunate to have the snow hold off until much later than last year, shortening this coming winter by about a month. I guess in some way we should be grateful for that.

However you deal with the shortened days, one reprieve of winter’s grip is that in a little over a month, the days will start to get longer again.

Before you know it, we will need to set the clocks forward and begin this controversial process all over.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, While around town this past week after Halloween, I can see signs of a changing season. Bright lights, decorations, and ornaments are showing up on every corner. Christmas season no less.

However, there seems to be one major event that there is no evidence of. Remembrance Day. Sure some lo c al b usin es ses have th e a n nual poppy boxes, but they are over looked because of the outrageous amount of Christmas “necessities”.

As a proud Canadian and an active m e m b e r of th e l o c a l A r my C a d et Corps, I am saddened and troubled deeply by this. Yes, we wear poppies the week before November 11, sometimes attend the annual ceremony, and if one is in school, are forced into the gym to listen to the same letter

We are always going to be telling stories about the cool Halloween costumes and the expensive Christmas gifts, but do we remember the names of those men who stood so proudly in front of us that Monday?

The early decoration for Christmas before Remembrance Day is disrespectful and discourteous to one of the most important days of the year to every Canadian regardless of who they are, where they live, or what they believe in.

The Evolution Of Alberta Beef Franklin Wolters Columnist

It took quite some ti m e to p u t c at tl e on the prairie that had once been the home of bison and their enormous herds from the long time past. Further south cattle could manage the winters like the bison, but for the most part the cattle simply had to be wintered for months to survive, and it took a few generations to get the hang of putting up enough feed to last a long winter. In my memory it was a constant struggle in the early times to grow and put up enough feed for those longer, harsher winters.

Where my Dad was raised in Southern Missouri the snow usually only stayed a few days and there were around 200 frost free days. Imagine coming u p h e re a n d havi n g to ha n d fe e d your cows for six months. In those ea rly tim es s te ers were wintere d into the third year which took even more feed away from the breeding cow herd. Most of the beef in early

times I understand wasn’t grain fed.

The steers were allowed to grow full size before they took their trip to the packers. Most homesteaders and smaller farmers milked cows and lived on cream cheques so they couldn’t be accused of raising “Ranch Cattle.”

Wh en M o m g ot ma rrie d p a r t of her dowr y was some really nice Ayrshire cows that were to become the nucleus of Dad’s herd. Now those cows teamed with polled Hereford bulls turned out to be a really good cross and we had such nice red white faced cows that could really feed a calf and they brought in some winners even if they were a touch high strung and flighty. They sure could test your skills as a cowboy as I remember. The early maturing domestic breeds lent themselves to the idea of putting the calves on full grain as soon as possible after weaning and by seeding time they were fat and finished and made into beef. That custom soon changed though people started to want leaner meat so we began to import those long lean exotic types from Europe.

fords, Shorthorns, and Angus became mixed with Charolais, Simmental, and so on, and cattle took on all manners of different shades.

Our 4-H club kept everyone wanting calves that would finish by show and sale time in the spring. That 4-H club was very instrumental in making farm young people very aware of how important breeding and proper care could be in making our beef the best in the world. Dad used to say the early homesteaders would keep for a herd bull the animal that would bring the least money on the market. I mean after all it would seem a waste to use the best one for a herd bull!! I know how carefully heifers were selected for various traits that made a good mother and had milking ability to feed her calf. Only the bulls were sold, I really believe our winters here make for stronger animals as only strong vigorous animals could withstand the rigors of the climate and stay healthy.

Several winters in the past I journeyed down to Texas and observed in my travels the livestock ranging there. I never saw any in that coun-

tr y that could rival what we have here and their climate is hot as ours is cold. The longhorns down there with the “Brahman” cross are more for rodeos that eating I’m thinking.

This is a very easy desert to make; it is a variation on the traditional rice pudding recipe. I made it last week in Calgary, and my daughter- in- law, who has traveled extensively, remarked that it tasted just like Thai food.

If you want a snowy white pudding, use white rice. A word of caution, do not use sticky rice for pudding, save it for sushi.

The amount of sweetener you use will depend on whether you use sweetened or unsweetened coconut. I used sweetened coconut for one batch and I found that I only had to use one tablespoon of

coconut sugar.

Coconut sugar is a fairly new item that is available in health food stores. The benefit of coconut sugar is that it does not raise blood sugar as quickly as other sweeteners, and it contains some nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, antioxidants and inulin fibre.

The fat in coconut and coconut milk is the healthy MCFA, medium chain fatty acid type. Studies have shown that populations with high amounts of coconut products in their diets have almost non-existent cholesterol or heart disease problems.

Coconut is a source of lauric acid, a natural component of mother’s milk that is known to raise good cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol. These health benefits extend especially to coco-

nut oil. Just be sure to purchase virgin coconut oil and not hydrogenated, which contains harmful trans-fats.

I have found that using flaked coconut seems to give the pudding a better texture than the shredded coconut. This pudding can also be sweetened with honey or maple syrup.

When selecting rice, converted rice has more nutrients than plain white rice, but brown rice is the most nutritious.

It is high in manganese, selenium and magnesium. Brown rice, and other whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. So, say “yes please” to this healthy dessert.

Coconut and Rice Pudding 1 cup rice brown or white 2 cups water

1 can coconut milk 1 cup flaked coconut Coconut sugar or brown or white sugar to taste 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/8 teaspoon cloves 1/8 teaspoon ginger Prepare the 1 cup of uncooked rice according to package directions. Add in 400ml as the size of the can of coconut milk, the sugar, vanilla and the spices. Simmer on low for 5 minutes for the milk to be absorbed into the rice. Serve warm or cold. If you want a white rice pudding then use a white rice and white sugar and omit the spice. If you use the brown rice and the coconut or brown sugar, you will have a light, caramel flavor, with a hint of the exotic spices.

Each time I visit the cemetery, I find more names I recognize etched into the headstones erec ted there. The dates beneath the names confirm that Death is not biased: it sweeps indiscriminately across gender, selecting those who have live d ex ten d e d lives as well as others who seem barely to have begun to experience what it is to live.

The memories gather in this quiet place reserved for those whose lives have ended and also for the living to remember them. In the silence of death, the ordinary and the heroic are equal.

Every life has value. Most certainly, every life lived no matter how brief or extended, how ordinary or amazing, affects and changes the lives of others.

Sometimes we struggle with finding a meaningful way to remember, to pay tribute. Following tradition and ritual satisfies in part our duty and desire to honour our loved ones after death. We attend services, speak of the deceased’s virtues, place flow-

ers, accept letters of condolence. We pray. We grieve. We remember. We do what we can to endure life after loss.

During our own lifetimes, some of us have an idea about how we wish our survivors will honour us after death.

The Irish poet, W.B. Yeats, for example, authored his own epitaph. Taken from his poem, Under Ben Bulben, it reads: “Cast a cold eye/On life, on death./Horseman, pass by!” In the absence of such specific instructions, the task of finding adequate words or means of paying tribute is left to others who may choose to remember in ways that hold meaning only to themselves.

I have a memor y garden, two of them, really. The first is the private place to which I return in order to reflect upon the lives of deceased members of my family or friends.

In that place, I see their faces again briefly. In memory, those who have g o n e b efo re u s co n ti n u e to l i ve.

That par t of our lives shared with others remains a presence, becoming permanently embedded into the person we become because of the inevitable effect others’ lives have upon us.

The other garden is a place in full

view of anyone who passes. Although I could hardly claim to be an avid gardener, my garden is nonetheless beautiful, fruitful, and most importantly, significant. Within the leaves of the trees that emerge from the buds of every spring, there follows new beginnings, and renewable life.

Wa tc h i n g t h i s u n e n d i n g p r o c e s s reminds me each time of those for w h o m e a c h tre e wa s s p e c i f i c a l l y planted. Their names are not carved into the trunks and there are no markers, but I know where they stand, for whom each one was planted, and that is enough.

Fo r s o m e, a b e n ch ove rl o o ki n g a familiar landscape may ser ve as a tribute to one who took solace in contemplating nature. Strangers who pause for a rest may note the small plaque of dedication placed somewh e re o n th e b e n ch a n d, as th ey pause, the strangers may repeat the name appearing there and reflec t upon what kind of person it belonged to in life.

Fo r a n o t h e r, t h e r e m a y b e a n endowment created to benefit others who partake in an activity that the deceased once loved with a passion.

Each time a new gift is awarded to a

deserving recipient, that passion is reawakened and the one for whom it was named thereby honoured again and again.

Often, a tribute is a private one i n s te a d o f a n a n n o u n ce m e n t fo r public consumption. Only those closest to the beloved have the privilege of deciding how best to honour, to remember. What is meaningful is whatever we decide is meaningful.

My sister has no marker that you can view in a park, on a list of donors to any cause, or in any cemeter y.

She lived quietly and left this earth with barely a sound. We sit in silence sometimes by the sea----for she loved it so----dropping white lily petals into the waves. We watch them drift, swaying with the rhythm of the tide, until they sail away from us and out of sight, bound for destinations we cannot know.

Every life lived deserves remembrance. Those whom we love, those who lived in obscurity, those whose accomplishments will resonate into the long days to come. And those who willingly protect us, often at their own peril. Each one deser ves our respect. A pause for reflection. And to be remembered.

Timely Response Quells Minburn House Fire Karen Nedzielski Reporter On Nov. 5 at approximately 5:55 p.m. RCMP and the Mannville Fire Department responded to a call of a house fire located at 5021- 50 Avenue in the Village of Minburn, approximately 37 kilometres west of

Vermilion.

The residents of the house were away for a part of the day and arrived home to find the house on fire and made the call to 911.

A total of 13 members and all three of Mannville’s fire trucks responded to the call and upon arrival, crews were faced with 30 - 40 foot flames

coming out of the building.

Mannville Fire Chief Desmond Shubert said the back portion of the house was completely engulfed and th e f ire was b ein g fu el e d ox yg e n th ro u g h th e win d ows a n d q uickly made its way into the attic. Crews were able to do a “knock-down” on the back part of the structure and

within 15 - 20 minutes, crews gained the upper hand. Fire fighters continu e d to p ut o ut th e h ot sp ot s a n d helped retrieve some personal effects for the residents of the house.

No injuries resulted from the fire and at the time there was no estimate on the amount of damage to the property.

Anyone wishing to help, even if you can only work one day or a few hours, please stop by the Atco Electric building and talk to Delores, your help will be greatly appreciated. The local car dealers have always donated the use of vans for the deliveries in

the past and their generous support is very much appreciated. The local fire department has been very generous in helping us with the home deliveries and we will be counting on them again this year.

Community support – we have had very good support from the whole community in the past and your continued support will be most appreciated.

This is a non-profit program that is designed to help those less fortunate to enjoy the spirit of Christmas. This program is anonymous and the identity of the recipients is held in strict confidence and cannot be released to donors under any circumstances.

Win Bucks With The Ducks Nick O’Dea Reporter The Ducks Unlimited Vermilion and Mannville group held its annual gala on Nov. 9, at the Vermilion Senior’s Center.

Each year the banquet is shuffled between Vermilion and Mannville. Next year’s event will take place in Mannville.

The guests who attended had a wide variety of events to take part in. There were events such as silent and spoken auctions, as well as chance games.

Schielke said the banquet is one of the top fundraising projects that they do all year and it is worthwhile to attend.

“We have a lot of things here for auction. We’ve got firearms, painting prints, trips, furniture, a little bit of everything,” he said. “It’s a great event that gets people out supporting their environment and they also have a chance of walking away with some great stuff and it’s all for a great cause.”

The banquet only released 140 tickets for purchase and Schielke expected it to sell out.

Our Dream-Nightmare Hawaiian Cruise Stu Nickerson Submitted Our flight was scheduled for 7:09 a.m. on March 14, 2012. International flights recommend a two hour check-in allowance, so to be there at 5:09 a.m.

If we drive in the night before and take a motel as usual, we still have to be up about 4 a.m. so we decided to drive from home in the morning.

Trying to get to sleep at 9 or 10 p.m. when you are used to going to bed at midnight didn’t work very well. We were up at 1:30 a.m., on the road at 2:30 and at Edmonton International at 4:30 a.m.

Good time! We are ahead of schedule.

Check-in when smoothly, until we were at the last point...U.S. Customs.

“Any meat, fruit or vegetables,” Customs asked us.

“Well, one quartered orange, which we are about to eat,” we said.

Sorry, into the garbage with it we were told. Oh well, just an orange.

We enjoyed a leisurely, full sit-down breakfast and the boarding call came at 6:40 a.m., right on time. At 7:09 all the passengers were aboard, doors were closed, we were on our way. At 7:20 we are still not moving. The Captain announced that there was rain and fog in San Francisco and it was not safe for us to land therefore we were not allowed to take-off until it was clear. We were to expect a two hour delay and the passengers were all allowed to de-plane for a more comfortable wait. This was not good news but we were pretty sure we had a three hour cushion until the cruise loading from 1 - 3 p.m. We should be okay we thought.

With a 9 a.m. boarding call, we were airborne by 9:30, time was running

out! We landed in San Francisco at about noon and wouldn’t you know it, the rain and fog did not prevent our connecting flight from leaving without us. Re-booking took another hour.

We boarded the plane and waited, and waited, and waited.

“I’m sure I have enough fuel but the authorities say no. Re-fueling will take a half hour,” said the Captain.

We are near panic but what could we do? After re-fueling the captain announced that Air Traffic Control would not let the plane taxi until their turn come up again which was about another half hour. Now we were in full panic mode! But still, what could we do?

We de-planed at LAX before 3 p.m., one hour before sailing. We were told our luggage would be at carousel number one. My wife Jean, waited there while I got on the phone to the Princess Cruise’s emergency number. The female who answered first questioned me about our flight numbers, apparently to confirm that we were in fact delayed by weather and not by our own fault. She had me on hold at least twice as I watched Jean for a sign. I was still on hold when Jean mentioned that the luggage had arrived.

After the first carousel was empty we found it at the second one.

I hung up on my emergency lady, who had me on hold again, grabbed the luggage and headed for the taxi. It was now 3:15, sailing time was 4 p.m. and the estimated travel time to the pier was 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Several taxis were lined up at the curb as we hurried from behind them. We asked the driver of the first one if he was free. He said yes but he was supposed to let the car at the front of the line go first. The driver at the front was an older

gentleman and his taxi looked about the same age. We asked him if you could get us to the pier by 4 p.m. and he said for sure. We were sure he was the slowest driver in L.A. I suspect he drove slow on purpose, hoping he would get a return trip if we missed our ship. He would speed up for about ten seconds and then slow down for 20. At times traffic was passing us like we were standing still!

We did get to the pier safely by 4:02.

The ship was not moving but before we could get close enough to get get someone’s attention it started to move. I called the emergency number again and they said they were sorry but the ship could not stop for us as it would receive a huge fine for not leaving the pier on time. They said we could board the ship in Hilo in four days if we wanted to fly there. Whoopee thrill.

What do we do? Big, unfamiliar city, late afternoon. First we need a hotel.

Another taxi driver knew of a couple nearby and was checking with them by phone when the Princess Cruise representative showed up, having been notified of our plight. She advised us to get a room close to the airport as we would have to fly somewhere eventually. So, a return taxi trip for $150 got us back near LAX. Fortunately the hotel that was recommended to us had a vacancy. $239 plus tax! After hearing our sob story they came down to $200. Thank God for plastic! It was now 5 p.m., too late to call our travel agent. We had eaten very little since 6 a.m. so it was dinner at the hotel restaurant. After a double Crown Royal ($20) and a pretty good meal ($81) we felt almost alive again.

The room and bed were comfortable but we didn’t sleep well.

March 15, day two. First I called Princess again to confirm that we could join the cruise at Hilo on the big island on March 19. Then I called our travel agent to give her the bad news. She then spent two or three hours arranging a flight to Honolulu courtesy of United Airlines, a flight to Hilo at our expense for March 19 and hotel reservations for three nights in Honolulu at our expense. This news relieved our frustrations considerably.

Out flight time was 8 a.m. the next day so we needed to re-book our room.

No vacancy. We had to change our hotel.

Since our flight was only 16 hours away, we thought there was no need to confirm the flight time. We got to LAX before 7 a.m. to allow plenty of time for checking in. We found the United Airlines desk and presented our documents.

“Oh, that flight has been cancelled,” the clerk said, but there was room on a Delta flight at 8 a.m. Just what we needed, nine hours in LAX. We finally boarded our plane on time and arrived in Honolulu at about 7:30 p.m. local time.

Our two full days in Honolulu were pretty good. We walked on Waikiki beach, did a land tour of the island and of course, lots of shopping.

March 19. The short fifty-minute flight to Hilo was good. The $14 taxi trip to the pier was a pleasant surprise after the $75 one from LAX to San Pedro pier.

At last at about 1 p.m. we boarded the Golden Princess. Our first order of business was to get a cool brew and some food.

Should have been smooth sailing from now on, right? Wrong! Soon after we sailed we discovered our balcony cabin was at the stern, where our view was the ship’s wake. Also, this was the roughest, noisiest place on the ship.

The other two islands were interesting. We took a land tour on each island and upon our return from one trip we found our carpet soaking wet. Our first thought was sewer. The cleaning staff had shampooed it while we were gone but forgot to dry it.

During our four days at sea returning to Las Angeles the sea was quite rough.

At times most of the water spilled out of the swimming pools. Fortunately we did not get sea-sick.

One evening, two nights short of L.A. the ship slowed down to about five miles per hour. Our first thought was of the ship that had recently been towed home shortly before our cruise.

“One engine has lost power,” the Captain said. “Our mechanics are working on the problem.”

After about 30 anxious minutes we started gaining speed, reaching about 17 miles per hour. We were just a half an hour late getting into Ensenada. The only reason we stopped here was the regulation that a cruise ship must stop at a foreign port before returning to its home country. We did arrive at L.A. on time at 7 a.m.

Princess did give us a credit for the four days we missed aboard the ship. We knew we had not used it all, so we went to the service desk the night before our arrival at L.A. to confirm our status.

“Yes, you have a credit. It will be credited to your master card,” the person at the desk said.

Great, we are all set, or so we thought.

We were divided into groups for an orderly disembarkation. We were to vacate our cabin by 8 a.m., meet as a group at 8:20 and then we were off.

When we place our ID card in the slot to indicate we were leaving, a buzzer sounds and lights flash. What now?

We were told we must go to the service desk, no explanation, just go. Of course the service desk is on a different deck.

There is a line-up of several other people having trouble. After over an hour we got to talk to a service person.

“Oh, we owe you a credit,” said the person behind the desk.

Well, thanks for wasting over an hour of our time, possibly causing us to miss our shuttle, to tell us what we confirmed with you last night.

We boarded the airport shuttle with at least two minutes to spare. The flight to Calgary was fine, the plane to Edmonton was a smaller turbo-prop but it got us there. Our vehicle started without a problem. The roads were good. We arrived home before midnight and we were likely never happier to see homesweet-home!

Mannville Students Learn About Youth Criminal Justice Act Now let’s see what the grades have been up to in their Social Studies classes...

The Grade three class is looking into the quality of life in the countries of Peru, Ukraine, India, and Tunisia. They will soon be exploring the different celebrations and traditions found within these countries.

Students in the Grade four class have wrapped up learning about the six regions found in Alberta. They researched and then designed “Region Cubes” that provided information about climate, natural resources, location, animals, landforms, vegetation, cities and town, and bodies of water.

Grade five students are currently doing research projects on the aboriginal people found in the different regions

of Canada. They are exploring the region they lived in, how they lived off the land and used the natural resources available to them, the types of homes they built and whether or not they were nomadic.

The Grade six class enjoyed learning about local elections. The students were able to walk down to the polling stations and the returning officer explained the voting process. The students also held a mock vote in the classroom and they voted for the candidates that were running for Mannville Council. They are now learning about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In Grade seven they are currently learning about the first European Explorers. To wrap up their last unit on Three of Canada’s First Nations, students enjoyed making Slide Share videos that have been posted to YouTube. Slide share videos are a simple way to show images and tell a story using only your hands, images that you have colored and your voice on video.

Until November 18th A.C.E. water will just be supplied to the south side of town (south of the railroad tracks).The north side of town will still be supplied water from the water treatment plant.

On November 18th, we start to fill the reservoir at the water treatment plant and it will take approximately ten days to make the switch. After that, A.C.E. water will be pumped from both stations moving through the lines and into everyone’s homes.

During the transition to A.C.E. water, you may notice an odor and a reddish color to the water.

This is a reaction between the new chloramines in the water and the built-up deposits in the copper lines of your home.The water is safe to drink during this time and the reaction should be minimal in areas with PVC or concrete water mains. If you notice a slight reddish colour or odour turn on your cold water taps for approximately 5-10 minutes and the water should run clear. It will take up to 8 weeks for the new water to completely run through Vermilion’s system.

It is important that you check your water prior to washing your clothes. If you notice a reddish color please refrain from washing your clothes and turn on your cold water taps for approximately 5-10 minutes and if the water remains reddish please call the Transportation and Utilities Department at 780-581-2415.

Flushing throughout Town will occur during this 8 week period and your call will help the Town effectively monitor the movement of the new water.Your patience is greatly appreciated during this time as our crews are working hard to clear the water in your neighbourhood.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted Vermilion Elementary School has been focusing on character and citizenship education this year. Each month we study a new virtue. During the month of November, we will be concentrating on Respect. Respect is an attitude of caring about people, treating them with dignity, valuing ourselves and others, and speaking and acting with courtesy. When we are respectful, we treat others as we want to be treated. Respect includes honoring the rules of our family or school, which makes life more orderly and peaceful.

The Vermilion Wellness Coalition is having a free family event on Nov. 12.

Our school will be participating in an

attempt to set a World Guinness Book record for speed stacking. Speed stacking is an activity that involves stacking plastic cups in patterns as fast as possible.

Studies have shown that speed stacking promotes hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity, quickness, concentration and fitness. By activating both sides of the

brain, students also benefit academically with greater focus and concentration levels. Students will stack during their physical education or daily physical activity blocks throughout the day. In order to set the record, participants must stack for at least 30 minutes at any point, day or night, on Nov. 14.This does not mean 30 minutes of continuous stacking, but completing activities that highly involve stacking. Teachers will have a variety of activities planned for their students on this day.

J.R. Robson Hallways Host Halloween Sights Halloween at J.R. was a scary sight!

Everything from gory, bloody zombies and a headless man to Miley Cyrus, the Duck Dynasty men, Power Rangers and many minions were spotted lurking through the halls. It was really impressive to see the large number of both students and staff that dressed up in unique and hand-made costumes. Prizes went to Shane Thorsteinson for Scariest Costume, Katrina Pries as the Fortune Teller for Best Individual, Cassidy Stepanick, Kirsten Evans, Hailey Hendriks, Ashley Wagner, Jake Wynnychuk, Trace Wilhelm, Morgan MacMillan and Donovan Yaceyko as the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds for Best Group and Rebecca Bates, Kali Brodbin, Shanna

Gould, Brandon Cookson, Rebecca Quickstad and Brittany Barlow as Barbies still in their Boxes won Best Overall. The Pirate Crew set up fun activities such as a haunted house, mummy wrap, food eating contest and pumpkin bowling in the concourse that all students took part in.

We would like to thank parents, staff, and students who helped make the Fowl Supper a success. Thank you to family and community members for food donations and purchasing tickets in support of the J. Winter Driving Requires Extra Precautions Karen Nedzielski Reporter

With the winter now obviously upon us, drivers are experiencing winter road conditions deteriorating rapidly and many are caught off guard with not only preparing their vehicles but also changing their driving habits to suit the conditions.

Transport Canada encourages vehicle owners to prepare vehicles in advance of the winter season. The fall season is a better time to have your vehicle properly inspected for the winter season. Repair shops quickly become swamped with appointments for winter tune-ups and tire swaps with the first dump of snow.

Vehicle batteries should to be fully charged and the terminals should appear clean and free of corrosion to allow proper connection. Have your battery tested and replace at the first sign of it failing.

Have an inspection done on the ignition

system to ensure spark plugs and wires are not cracked or defective.

Transport Canada also suggests you make sure all of your vehicles lights are working and your head lights are aimed properly.

Have your brakes checked by a qualified technician if you feel any unusual pulling to one side or you hear any noises coming from the wheels, while applying the brakes.

Check the pressures often, especially during the winter season. Quality winter tires inflated properly will give you the best traction on winter roads and help with fuel efficiency. Checking your tires in a warm garage will cause a decrease in pressure when driven out into the cold environment.

Also ensure that your exhaust system is not leaking deadly carbon monoxide into your vehicle.

Check all hoses and belts for abnormal wear or cracks and if needed, replace them before winter. Make sure you are using an antifreeze rated for the correct

season and the heater and defroster both are working well.

Have cracked or badly chipped windshields replaced to ensure proper visibility of the road. Also make sure your wiper blades are clearing the windows effectively.

Avoid driving in bad conditions. Blizzards and heavy snowfalls can create heavy drifting and black ice conditions. If you are planning on heading out, check weather and driving conditions before heading out.

Allow extra time to reach your destination in case of poor road conditions. Do not rush yourself to get where you need to be.

Always keep an emergency survival kit in your vehicle in case of a break-down.

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) suggests you keep a winter survival kit in the trunk or back of your vehicle. It should contain a shovel, sand or kitty litter, traction mats, tow chains, compass, paper towels, warning lights or road flares, extra clothing, an emergency food pack, booster

cables, matches and a candle, fire extinguisher, extra windshield washer fluid, fuel line antifreeze and a reflective vest.

A few items which should also be included inside the vehicle are a flashlight, ice scraper and brush, road maps, a blanket and first aid kit.

In the event of a break-down or if you hit the ditch, stay with the vehicle. Do not attempt to walk in a blizzard. Use the emergency kit in your vehicle and wait for help to arrive. You have better odds of being found and should you decide to walk for help, you could become disorientated in blizzard conditions and find yourself lost without the protection of your vehicle.

Most people carry cell phones which in many places, can notify emergency services of your location and predicament.

Remember, if the winter conditions are bad and you do not need to be out on the roads, stay home and wait out the storm.

It simply is not worth the chance of having a problem.

There is nothing more beautiful than a highway lined with autumn colours. They take one’s breath away. But, just as soon as they appear, they’re gone and the sub-zero temperatures snap back to take one’s breath away. While we can all agree that the prospect of winter is pretty miserable — unless you’re a skier — there’s really nothing worse than hitting a patch of black ice. According to a recent Canadian Tire survey, a majority of drivers in Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia choose not to install winter tires, mistakenly believing that all-season tires offer adequate safety.

The evidence says otherwise. In wintercondition tests, Transport Canada and the

Rubber Association of Canada found that stopping was 30 to 40 per cent longer with all-season compared to winter tires.

In cornering, vehicles with all-season tires went off the testing track at speeds of only 40 to 50 km/h, while the vehicles equipped with winter tires had no problem. The results were consistent with front-, rear- and allwheel vehicles.

The experts from Desjardins Insurance agree that winter tires are designed to save lives. “What’s interesting is that many people who live in snow-belt regions across the country recognize the need for them,” said Desjardins spokesperson Joe Daly. “But some drivers in urban regions don’t see the need to switch. The fact is we’ve all experienced those icy mornings when you’re rush-

ing to work or school and the salt trucks just haven’t made it to your neighbourhood yet.

These conditions are much more dangerous than just plain snow and having the right tires can keep everyone safe.”

The reason why these tires are the most effective at preventing accidents is because they have deeper, specially-designed treads and are made of innovative rubber compounds that are softer and more pliant.

This allows them to perform better on ice, snow and slush, but also in both dry and wet conditions when the temperature dips below 7C. Daly also suggests that it’s also important to keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure.

“Overnight temperatures can drop from 5˚ to –15˚ and this rapid reduction can zap the

air out of you tires by as much as 4 psi. An under-inflated tire can be quite dangerous, so it’s important to keep tracking your tire pressure.”

Having a safe winter is a great reason to equip your car with the best tires. Transport Canada suggests that “winter tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in winter conditions.” Another incentive is that some insurance companies like Desjardins Insurance will reward their clients who use winter tires with a discount on their auto insurance.

We took time to rem emb er those who have s a crificed their lives for our freedoms on the morning of Friday, November 8. Rory Wheat and Kathleen Dieken did a wonderful job as the MCs for the program. Barry Roth piped the Flags, veterans and cadet members in followed by a prayer by Reverend Major Aubrey Bell and the singing of “O Canada” led by Samantha Ka r wa n dy. M r. Chase sha re d a m ess a g e fro m M P Le o n B en oit.

The grade five students recited the famous poem by John McCrea, “In Flanders Fields” and Brianne Wheat recited, “Please Wear A Poppy”. The audience then watched a Remembrance Day video created by grade 11 student, Matthew Pulyk. To begin the Act of Remembrance portions of the service Mr. Sommer read “The Ode” followed by the playing of the “Last Post”, two-minutes of silence, “ L a m e n t , a n d “ R e v e i l l e ”.

Two students chosen from each class processed forward to Lay a Wreath at the front of the auditorium. Before the Marching out of the Colours the grade four students sang “God Save the Queen”.

O n Fr i d a y, N o v e m b e r 8 the grade four students received their bibles fro m Fa t h e r R o g e r, d u r i n g a special service. Following the p resentation of bibles the children enjoyed visiting with Father while they shared juice and cookies.

On Friday, November 8th, the teaching staff traveled to Wainwright to participate i n a d i v i si o n P rofe s si o n a l Development Day. Each division attended three different sessions throughout the day. There was a Technology sessions dealing with educational tools and how to access them. One session gave teachers a time to meet with other teachers of the same grade or subject to collaborate. The third session was spent with our new superintendent, Charlie McCormack, to s h a re su cce s s e s i n th e division and to discuss the direction of our division.

Volleyball Up dates: November 1/2: Sr. Girls lost out in the playoffs a Tournament at Vegreville Composite, Sr. Boys lost out in the se mi-f ina ls at th eir h o m e tournament. The Sr. Boys are in Myrnam Friday, November 8th. Sr. Girls host Districts on Saturday, November 16. Sr. Boys host Zones on November 22 and 23.

The Tier 1 Rotary Pee Wee Tigers blew the competition off the ice during the semi-final game against the Lloydminster Alta-Sask-Physios.

Local News Art on the Move

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts showcased several paintings and pictures this past week at the Vermilion Public Library. The Travelling Exhibition has been running since 1981 and offers Albertans glimpse into a culture they may not otherwise have the opportunity to see.

The visual arts ranged from photography, photo compositions, paintings and photo illustrations that were all created by Albertan artists.

Each year more than 300,000 Albertans attend the travelling show to garner a look at the art that is shown at 100 exhibitions in over 107 communities. There are three regional galleries and one arts organization coordinate. The AFA Travelling Exhibition Program also offers educational support material aimed at helping educators integrate visual arts into their curriculums.

Program coordinator Geraldine Collins said that the purpose of showcasing fine art at the Vermilion Public Library is to bring some added zest to the area.

“Many people may not have seen art like this before so it gives us a way to share some culture with the citizens of the area.”

She said the opportunity to have hosted the program is great and there is something for everyone. The genres of art varied and there was art for both adults and young children. Photo Nick O’Dea.

Grizzly Bear Creek Wind Project Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Concerned community members gathered at the Mannville Elks Hall to obtain more information about the proposed wind project for the Grizzly Bear Creek area located six kilometers south of Mannville. The proposed project consisting of up to 50 turbines, will occupy approximately 15,000 acres of land within the Townships of 48 and 49 and Ranges 7 and 8, W4M. E.ON Climate and Renewables, a North American company, wants to move forward with the project. Development Manager Gary Martens was in attendance at the meeting to answer questions on behalf of E.ON. E.ON has been performing environmental studies in the Grizzly Bear Creek area since 2011, focusing on wildlife, birds, bats and other specific sensitive species as well as vegetation and wetlands.

The 50 - 2.4 megawatt turbines will have a tower height of 91 meters and a rotor diameter of approximately 114 meters, per turbine.

E.ON said the project fits in with existing and future plans to maintain Alberta’s energy supply for electric consumers by diversifications away from carbonbased fuels adding value to electricity consumers by “mitigating long-term fuel supply risks”.

Retired pharmacist Carmen Krogh, has spent more than 40 years in the health care field. Krogh also sits on the Board for the Society For Wind Vigilance whose Board of Directors is made up of physicians, engineers and other professionals. The organization’s objectives are to ensure safe placement of turbines based on human health research, educate people on the risks of adverse health effects from turbines and also work with interested parties to ensure turbine guidelines are maintained to protect the health and safety of communities.

Krogh gave a presentation on the effects wind turbines can have on humans which can be long-term.

Krogh said that children can be the most affected and through her support-

ing documents, revealed that the low frequency noise and visual flicker emitted by the turbines can contribute to health issues as well as intensify current health issues such as autism, asthma, epilepsy, vertigo and migraines.

Krogh’s research has also supported the fact that some farm animals such as dairy cattle, pigs and chickens can be adversely affected by the turbines.

Krogh said that placement of turbines is the key to avoiding health issues.

Ken Gregory, Director with the Friends of Science Society, gave his presentation of numerous graphs and tables of climate change of both global warming and cooling. In his presentation he stated that climate change itself, is driven by the sun, not humans, and not driven by the consumption of gas and oil fueled electricity.

Carol Goodfellow with the Office of the Farmer’s Advocate, advised landowners on the many contractual items to consider when signing a contract for turbines to be placed on a property. A number of things should be considered before signing a contract to ensure everything proceeds smoothly.

Considering future property values is a must, should you want to sell parcels of land before the end of the term of the contract.

“It’s a way for youth of today to give back to those youth of underprivileged countries,” he said.

O p e ra ti o n C h r i s tm a s C h i l d c a n trace back its roots to 1990. In 1993, it expanded and was adopted by the Samaritan’s Purse.

Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian organization overseen by Franklin Graham. To this day the organization has collected and distributed over 100 million shoebox gifts all across the globe.

In 2012 alone, Canadians donated more than 662,0 0 0 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes that went to needy children in the world.

While many would love to send the kids all kinds of Christmas goodies, due to Canadian customs regulations, many items are not permitted to be sent in shoeboxes.

I te m s t h a t a r e p r o h i b i te d a r e: toothpaste, food (including chewing gum), second hand items, playing cards (but games such as Uno are

allowed), liquids or fluids that can freeze, melt or break, and items that can scare or be harmful to a child.

War related items such as toy guns or pocket knives are also prohibited.

Many people may have the desire to send a backpack filled with items rath e r tha n a sh o e b ox. H oweve r, S a m a r i t a n’s P u r s e p refe r s i te m s only be sent in shoeboxes as they do not want any children feeling they received less than another. For those looking to donate more, they can fill as many shoeboxes as they like.

The Samaritan’s Purse asks that you send beneficial items for children that will help them out in their daily lives. Items such as school supplies, stuffed animals, small musical instruments, t-shirts, socks and hygiene products (soap must be secured in a sealed bag). Loose hard candy can also be sent but only if it is also in a sealed bag.

They ask that a personal note or photo also be sent with the contents of the shoebox to let the child know who the Good Samaritan is.

Items for this projec t can be dropped off at Lakeland College until November 15 until 5 p.m.

Mission In Mexico Nick O’Dea Reporter

Irene Marsh rarely has a moment to stop and relax, but according to Marsh, she’d rather keep busy anyways.

Marsh, a member of the Parkview Alliance Church, is taking part in a five-year tradition of mission work in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Cuernavaca is the capital and largest city in the state of Morelos, Mexico. With a population of just under 350,000 and just a 30-minute drive from the densely populated Mexico City, it is a bustling city of commerce and budding industry. Nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring, the

mild weather has attracted many people throughout the years, such as Aztec Emperors and the Shah of Iran.

The mission work usually lasts one week.

Volunteers will travel down to help build an infrastructure, teach a skill or language, or help in any way possible.

Marsh said she was always attracted to helping others. According to her it was something that came naturally.

“When I was younger I worked with children with autism and other children who needed care,” she said. “I’ve raised a family of my own and began taking in foster children to raise and help guide.”

Not one to simply dip a toe in the water, Marsh is plunging into the world of mission

work full force.

“I’m going down for six months which is as long as they will allow you to go down without being a citizen,” Marsh said. “I’m going to help children in an orphanage and try and make a difference. I never looked into my church for mission work because it was short-term but after I checked it out they were thrilled I was willing to do an extended stay.”

Marsh said she has been preparing and organizing her life in Vermilion to get ready for the life-changing trip. A self-described woman of simple means, she is taking the bare minimum of what she can in order to

accommodate care boxes for the orphans.

The trip that will last until May will keep Marsh away from her grown children, who no longer live with her for Christmas and several birthdays.

“My kids are not too happy about that but they understand why I am doing it and are happy for me, also a little bit worried,” she said.

Marsh will be taking her eight year old daughter Angela with her.

Angela, who struggles with communication, requires Marsh to act as her voice.

“I think she’ll love it,” she said. “I can’t imagine going anywhere without her.”

Two 4H Clubs Working Together To Offer A Canine Project

This year the Vermilion 4H Sheep Club and the Vermilion River 4H Outdoor Club will be working together to offer the Canine Project to members of both clubs.

On Oct. 27, fourteen 4H members and their dogs met at Lakeland College to get started with their projects. They worked on basic commands like sit, heel and recall.

Members are hoping to learn more about the health of their animals, obedience and training. Project Leaders Deanna Krys with the Sheep club and Stacey Hryciuk of the Outdoor Club have some exciting plans for the project this year.

Duo Of Disappointing Losses

Vermilion Tiger Edward Haarsma assisted the first goal of the night during the game on Nov. 6. After his first shot was blocked, teammate Kyler Anderson scored drawing first blood against the Lloydminster Bandits. The Tigers’ lead was short-lived as the Bandits scored goals in both the second and third periods.

That game got its major penalties out of the way early with a fist-fight in the first ten minutes resulting in two players receiving game misconducts.

The Vermilion Jr. B Tigers certainly had a rough week.

On Nov. 6, the Tigers took on the Lloydminster Bandits in a competitive showing. Within the first five minutes Tigers’ player Corsen Braham and Bandits’ player Sean Uhey fought and were expelled with a game misconducts.

The Tigers drew first blood less than eight minutes into the first period with a goal made by Brandon Bardoel. They held the lead until the buzzer sounded for the second period.

The second period went a bit smoother with only one penalty from each team.

The Bandits’ player Chris Romanchuk tied up the game with a goal four and-ahalf minutes in the second period.

The game stayed tied until less than seven minutes into the third period when Bandits’ player Jarrett Asschenbrenner sealed the Tigers’ fate by scoring the final goal of the game.

The Tigers lost 2-1.

On Nov. 8, the Tigers hit the ice to take on the Vegreville Rangers in a game just as competitive as the one played only days before.

Tigers’ player Kyler Anderson made the first goal shortly after 11 minutes on the ice but the Rangers’ player Wyatt Murphy tied it up with only 16 seconds left in the first period.

In the second period the Tigers took the lead once again with a goal from Colby Bowman but only maintained the lead for less than one minute when Rangers’ player Grayson Sorrovich scored, ending the second period in a 2-2 tie.

The Tigers gained the lead again with a goal from Trent Dutchak but only six minutes later Bandits’ player Jordan Herbert scored.

On a Power-play the Rangers took the lead for the first time in the game with Wyatt Murphy scoring his second goal of the game. The competitive drive of the game was intense as Tigers’ players scrambled to make up for the deficit.

Within the next three minutes the Tigers rallied hard and tied the game

with a goal from Taylor Heck.

With a little over eight minutes left in the game, Rangers’ player Robby Doherty scored the last goal of the game.

After a hard rally and a couple of close calls a whistle was blown leaving only 3 seconds on the clock. The face-off was held on the side of the Rangers net. The Tigers won the face-off and had the shot set up but failed to capitalize. The Rangers took the game 5-4.

Curling Up A Storm Nick O’Dea Reporter

The Junior Curling After-School League began registration on November 5, at the Vermilion Curling Rink. Junior curlers can still register but Coordinator Joanne McCrae said the faster it’s done the better.

The Junior Curling After-School League offers youths a chance to learn the skills necessary to become skilled curlers. The curlers are taught team positions, how to score a game, and how to play the game itself. They also learn about ice safety and get a chance to interact with each other in a less-competitive sporting environment.

Safety is an important element of curling according to Coordinator Joanne McCrae. Although there were a few tumbles initially, the group stayed positive and giggled each time they slipped.

“It’s not as competitive as hockey or other sports, so it allows them to have more fun with the game,” McCrae said. “They can socialize and make new friends with people they may not be acquainted with.”

McCrae said that with the skills learned at the Junior After-School League, players will be able to participate in curling tourna- Eugene Wasylik lines up to take a shot during a casual game of curling at the ments called bonspiels.

The Junior Curling After-School League Seniors Casual Curling that takes runs from 3:45-5:30 p.m. every Tuesday place Tuesdays and Thursdays from from the beginning of November to the 1-3 p.m. beginning of March. The cost of registration is $60, which includes the use of equipment, a year-end pizza party, a personal and group curling photo.

She believes that curling once a week is much less demanding than many other sports and requires less of a time commitment from students with full schedules.

McCrae, who has been curling for 35 years, said that it’s a great opportunity for kids to become lifelong curlers.

“There are many seniors out there who curl. It’s a great sport that can almost always be found in rural communities.”

Wayne Seward, President of the Vermilion Seniors Curling Club, agrees. “It’s a great way to get some exercise, especially for seniors,” he said. “I’ve been curling since I was 15 and now I’m 68.”

“Some seniors go down south and some go on winter vacations,” he said. “This way we don’t have set teams. It’s not very competitive it’s just for fun.”

Seward said that curling is a great sport for seniors because it will get them out of the house and meeting new people. He said it’s a good way to make new friends.

The games take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. There is a registration fee of $190 for the entire season, but those who cannot make a permanent commitment can participate for $10 a game.

Wayne said he will continue to curl for as long as he can.
