The Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce held its annual Small Business Awards luncheon on Oct. 18 at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre. The various small businesses and employees nominated for the awards were acknowledged for their contributions to Vermilion, during the luncheon by the Chamber of Commerce as well as Honourable Leon Benoit, MP for Vermilion-Wainwright and Honourable Richard Starke, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster and Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation.

Unable to attend were Honourable MP Leon Benoit and Honourable MLA Richard Starke who both sent letters of congratulations to all the nominees and recipients of the awards. Honourable Benoit’s letter stated that small and medium businesses are the “lifeblood” of economic growth and most of those businesses are the “first to hire and last to fire” in a community.

Councillor Caroline McAuley brought greetings from the Town and said Council has always recognised and listened to the concerns of local b usin ess own ers. Sh e a d d e d that many people visit Vermilion because of its unique and valuable services.

Guest speaker Robin Acton gave s o m e i n si g ht o n w h at i t t a ke s to acquire and keep employees.

Acton said although there may be a generation gap in employer/employees, most times employees simply need to feel valued and appreciated in a job which can keep them in their position of employment.

She also said businesses need to have strong leadership to communicate value to employees which creates an environment to allow employees to “bring their best self” to work.

There were seven businesses nominated for the Business of the Year award and rounding out the field of nominees were Craig’s of Vermilion, Xtatic Hair, Fountain Tire, Webb’s

Ford, The Bargain Store, Twice as Nice and Tim Horton’s. The Business of the Year award went to Darrin Zubiak of Fountain Tire.

The Spirit of Vermilion award had two nominations this year, Harps Family Foods and Rock Solid Group of Companies. Chamber President Scott Kovatch said that both were nominated for their commitment to the community but in the end it would be the new Harp’s Family Foods winning the Spirit Of Vermilion award.

The Employee of the Year category had the most nominations with eight names being submitted. They were Eastalta Co-op’s Lanny Delves, Linda Boychuk from Craig’s of Vermilion, Dorie Jackson with Vermilion Credit Union, Sandy Boomhower with Bee Clean, Linda Nelson of Stewart Realty and Auctions, David Rein with Tim Horton’s, Geoffrey Person with The Town of Vermilion and Lynn Filgate with Clarke Insurance. Winning the award was Linda Boychuk with Craig’s of Vermilion. Accepting in her absence was Doug Stewart.

Three names were nominated for the Employer of the Year with Harps Family Food, Boston Pizza and Ferbey Sand and Gravel completing the field of nominees. It would be the long-time business of Lawrence Ferbey winning the award. Ferbey Sand and Gravel Ltd. started its operation in 1955 by John Ferbey, and the company hauls

and delivers sand and gravel products throughout the Vermilion area.

The President’s Choice award is chosen each year by the current president of the Chamber of Commerce and this year’s recipient is none other tha n H a r p K h e la of H a r p s Fa m ily Foods claiming a second award at the luncheon.

With ATB Financial being a major sponsor of the luncheon, ATB’s Dale Beaudry gave a closing congratulatory message to not only the winners but also to all nominees for this year’s awards.

No Fuss C.O.W. Bus Nick O’Dea Reporter The Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels (C.O.W) Bus moseyed on in to the Town of Vermilion this past week, looking for young minds, as well as parents, to educate.

The object of the “Holstein on Wheels”, as they call it, is to provide a friendly atmosphere for parents and children to learn how to integrate literacy in their daily lives.

The C.O.W. Bus travels to both rural and urban communities promoting the benefits or literacy for kids 6 and under, as well as making a donation of quality books at each stop.

Dimarco said the parents are the first teachers for young children and they hope to educate parents in ways to improve their child’s reading and writing skills. They also learn new techniques from parents who have innovative ways of teaching at home.”What we want to do is see the parents involved because they are the ones who will implement this afterwards,” she said. “They need that good foundation for lifelong learning.”

Amanda said that if a child struggles with oral language they often cannot read well, and if they cannot read well they often cannot write well.

C.O.W. Bus representative Addrienne Rangarira said that the first 6 years in a child’s life is crucial.

“Everything can be absorbed; they are

still spongy,” she said. “For every dollar you use on a child between the age of 0-6 is equal to spending three dollars on an adult.”

The C.O.W bus was filled with puzzles, interactive toys, and books.

Librarian Michele Scott said they are extremely pleased that the C.O.W Bus contacted them for a showcasing and that the donation of books was greatly appreciated.

Small Business Week in Vermilion began with the Kickoff Breakfast hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at the School of Hope.

Chamber of Commerce member and Kickoff Breakfast Organizer Anna Giesbrecht said that the importance of small business week goes beyond simply recognizing the hard work of citizens in Vermilion and surrounding areas, it’s also about networking.

“Some of these people rarely have a chance to meet with each other and it’s beneficial if they can create new partnerships or business relationships,” she said. “Someone might have a business that can contribute to another’s and vice versa.”

Ve g rev i ll e F i re a n d A m b ulance arrived and transported a 30 year old Vegreville man to hospital with bumps, scrapes and bruises.

Witnesses say the male was riding his motorcycle westbound on 50 avenue when an Eastbound Ford pickup truck made a left turn in front of the motorcycle. The rider applied his brakes, laid the motorcycle down then ran off the roadway and out of traffic.

The motorcycle slid into the side of the truck causing damage to both.

Luckily, the rider was released from hospital later with only a few stitches.

Constable Curtis HARSULLA of the Vegreville RCMP says,” Traffic was quite heavy at the intersection at the

time of the crash. It looks like due to the motorcyclist’s quick thinking it appears that sacrificing his bike may have saved him some serious injuries.”

This matter remains under investigation, but police have ruled out alcohol and speed as contributing factors.

What Did We Do Back Then?

Anytime you drive down the street or enjoy a cup of coffee at the cafe we are constantly reminded of the high tech world we live in. People walk with purpose, talking or texting on cell phones, carrying out life’s tasks. The coffee shop talk is constantly interrupted with the ringing and pinging of calls and messages coming and going around the tables.

What is really interesting is that before cell phones, we visited and carrie d o n co nvers atio ns without interruption from the nagging little devices. If someone had to get a hold of you, they called you at home or if it was really important, they would catch you at work.

What happened to the days of card

night at the neighbours’ or getting together for a good old fashioned chin-wag?

I c a n re m e m b e r a s a c h i l d t h e excitement of heading over to the neighbours’ place for a rare visit.

The adults would play cards and visit as the young folk would scamper to the basement to play. These trips meant playing hide and go seek in the gigantic basement and playing on their shuffleboard. We couldn’t wait to go there and it honestly was a treat to go visit them.

We would hear the odd bellow for us to set tle down as we would b e making too much noise playing games in the basement. Actual games that required you to throw dice, move your Monopoly man around the board and collect $200 dollars for passing GO. It seems we have gotten so wrapped u p with te ch n o l o g y th at we h ave forgotten that before cell phones and

electronic devices, we still managed to exist. We have found ways for technology to help us get certain tasks done faster and more efficiently.

Smar t phones have helped us organise our lives and make sure to remind us to get the children to dance lessons or cadets and also remind us to turn on the slow cooker so that supper is ready when we get home.

Eve n yo u n g p e o p l e h ave th e s e phones. Elementary students carry cell phones to and from school in case they need to contact their parents.

Although the phones are mostly used to chat with friends, the device can prove invaluable with such cases like the recent sexual predator concern in the east central Alberta area.

The ability to make instant contact in times of distress can quickly su p p re s s a ny fe a r s of i m p e n d i n g danger. Texting and mobile uploads to social media sites helped spread the

word and parents and teachers could be proactive instead of reactive. The pesky device did prove its value in today’s society in that circumstance.

As time moves on, we can not slow the progress of technology, although many would like to. It seems they will take their place in today’s world.

The next time you are standing in a line up for a cup of coffee or see someone walking down the street talking on the phone, oblivious to the world around them, you have to wonder. Is the call so important that they could not smile or acknowledge the approaching pedestrian?

We have come to rely on the technology around us but let’s not allow it to control our ability to be human and physically communicate with each other.

Why am I asking? Because I want to be sure you give some time and thought to somethin g that, these days, is as urgent as war.

John Adams said: “There are two ways to enslave a nation. One is by the sword. The other is by debt.”

Many of our parents and grandparents faced the threat of being enslaved by the sword and felt obliged to give years of their lives in defense of our countr y and our freedoms.

Approximately 110,000 young Canadian men actually gave their lives!

Their combined efforts and resulting triumph in two world wars led to a period of freedom and prosperity that is unparalleled in history.

However, we as a society were not content to protect individuals only from evil. In the past fifty years we have endeavored to protect everyone from everything including their ow n fo l l i e s . I n s o d o i n g we h ave increased the size, scope and cost of

government, using debt and deficits, to a point where most of the Western world is on the ‘road to Greece’.

Our generation and more importantly future generations are now on the verge of being enslaved by debt Fo r tu nately, th ere have b e en a number of warning signs concerning the danger of growing public debt including the near collapse of the Greek economy and the bankruptcy of a number of US cities including Detroit.

B ut what can o rdinar y C ana dians do to stop Canada or Alberta or Ontario or your local municipality from mortgaging our future?

Follow the political process and

VOTE for someone that is determined to see that government lives within its/our means and is committed to leaving future generations with LESS DEBT than we now have.

If you are inclined to say that you are not interested in politics, I will leave you with this thought.

M y g ra n d fa th e r wa s n o t i n te rested in war either, but he still went TWICE so his children, grandchildren and future generations could have a better life.

Gas-Line Easement To Ease Issue Of Location Nick O’Dea Reporter

A compromise has been made with a local farm owner in regards to the relocation of a gas-line on the SouthWest corner of the new commercial subdivision called block X. The current gas-line feeding the property owner goes directly through the centre of the subdivision.

Town Manager Dion Pollard said that that as they develop the area, a slight easement will not be a problem.

“Nothing major, we just have to create a line to feed the house,” he said. “The only reason it even went to council is because of the dollar amount.”

Pollard said that for a job such as this, $13,000 isn’t an exorbitant amount and is fairly standard.

Mayo r B ru ce Marriot t s aid that after speaking with the land owner, he understood the frustration of the situation and strived to find equal ground between the parties.

is fair and there should be no more issues.

Here’s hoping that everyone and their families had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. As a turkey addict from way back and having spent a delicious Thanksgiving supper with family, I was smiling for days afterwards.

L as t night I was pickin g at th e bleached bones of that big bird, looking for morsels that even, I am sure the flies wouldn’t bother with, since the skeleton looks like a flock of vultures dined on it.

Maybe the wife will make her mouth watering turkey soup with what is left.

But since that isn’t much, the taste of turkey without the turkey, just isn’t the same.

However, I have a backup plan. I made a deal to trade some hay on my property for a wild turkey; these turkeys are raised wild, but in captivity for their own protection from predators.

They will be grown and ready for 3”full wide version

the deep fryer, so I will most likely release the big bird and use my bow to harvest it, and then prepare it for the deep fryer.

Now most think that a deep fried turkey would be greasy of course, as I did before I tried it the first time, however it is not - as a matter of fact oven roasted bird is greasier than deep fried.

I believe it is the process, the turkey pot is filled with good old canola oil, and pre- super heated - then the turkey is dropped in quickly. I believe the heat seals in natural juices and actually keeps out the greasy oils.

The bird is so moist and never dry, yet the outer surface of the bird is crispy and also grease or oil free compared to even oven roasted, and it is ever so tasty, I can’t wait.

Speaking of excellent table-fare, I will be processing my elk this week and I am looking forward to a huge roast where nothing goes to waste either, as I will gobble that up to the last morsel.

Careful on the highways folks, it’s that time of year again where the moose mating season or “rut,” as it’s called, is on. They seem to be everywhere. Bulls take a beating because they don’t think at all when looking for a mate.

Th ey c a n a p p e a r o u t of nowhere on rural roads and highways. Trying to dodge a critter the size of a small house is hard to do, and believe me a collision between your vehicle and a moose is not something you want to do.

I have been out enjoying fall looking for that elusive mule

Althou gh th e Natio nal Weath er Service is predicting a mild to average winter for 2013-2014, the Farmers’ Almanac is predicting a bitterly cold and snowy winter, The Old Farmer’s Almanac is also predicting a harsh winter.

As unfortunate as it is I am leaning more towards both the farmers’ almanacs. Last year was a brutal and long winter. I saw signs in nature last year dictating that, but tried to have a more positive outlook.

I never read the signs properly, as I was hoping for a mild winter and looked for those signs instead of the more obvious signs that dictated we were in for a nasty winter.

This year paying more attention to both sides, it’s leaning more toward another nasty winter than a mild one.

I hope I am wrong and for once the national weather service is right.

Regardless, let’s get out there and enjoy our scenic and mild fall before that dreaded cabin fever process starts.

The October scenery was and still is very scenic this year, a lot of colours and smells. I love the smell of fall. It’s fresh and crisp; most likely due to the leaves turning and the cool air.

In my travels this late summer/fall, I have seen the most Woolly Bear caterpillars I have ever seen on a given year.

The big fuzzy black caterpillar with the orange band in the center was everywhere.

The Woolly Bear caterpillars are the larval form of the tiger moth - official name: “Pyrrharctia Isabella” - known simply as the Isabella Tiger moth. This caterpillar has been the topic of controversy for hundreds of years.

According to legend, the wider that middle brownish orange section is, the milder the coming winter will be, conversely, a narrow brownish orange band is said to predict a harsh winter.

But is it true? Scientists have done extensive research into the topic. Some scientists believe it’s scientific fact while others discount it as mere folklore.

However, folklore has predicted weather and winters for hundreds of years. The “Old Famers’ Almanac” is made up of most of that folklore and is at times more accurate than scientific weather predictors.

Regardless, according to the band on the Woolly Caterpillars this year, unfortunately they are pretty narrow compared to other years; half the size of a couple years ago.

TRAILER SKIRTING AND INSULATION PART2

Unfortunately about half of the trailers I climb under have a lot of damage to this liner material. When the liner is torn the insulation falls down and several bad things start take place. First of all the insulation falls down to the soil where it gets wet. Then mice use it as a ladder to gain access to the floor space. Finally the fallen insulation fails to keep the pipes and floor warm enough to prevent freezing. If you look under the trailer and notice rips or tears and exposed insulation you need to take action to stop the things I described above.

There are a few mistakes I commonly find under trailer. First mistake is trying to add heat under the trailer when it was never designed to be heated. Adding a heat duct from the furnace or running the dryer vent into the crawlspace simply creates a lot of frost and leads to mold. Trying to insulate the skirting and heating the crawlspace almost always leads to mold, remember the trailer was designed to have a cold crawlspace. I have even seen situations where people have put a mobile home on a foundation only to discover mold later on. Anyone who has ever wielded a shovel to dig a hole or trench for any reason can tell you the work and sweat entailed in any enterprise of that sort. Being a ditch digger in the old times put you on the very lowest rung of the totem pole in society’s pecking order. I can remember going to a movie in the old Columbia Theater and seeing men digging a trench to lay a pipe of some kind down the street. The street was closed all summer it seemed like. The same ditch could be dug in hours with a modern backhoe now. That’s the way of the world it seems when you travel the country now.

You see huge piles of dirt being formed to allow pipe lines of a large size going miles across the land seemingly effortlessly and beyond comprehension for cost. I guess moving the mountain will be next, it seems it possible anyway.

When Dad decided to build on our home just after the Second World War, he chased the country looking for a cat dozer to dig the basement and finally had to resort to

using our little Ford tractor and a little slip to haul out the dirt we’d loosened up with its two bottom plow. That was quite an adventure!! Before front end loaders if you wanted sand or gravel you would travel to a local pit and yes, you’d shovel it out by hand. Puts thing into perspective if you’ve experienced that and see huge trucks hauling gravel now!

We didn’t have much use for digging ditches until after the power had arrived and we needed suddenly to have running water, sewer systems and all the network of buried pipes that entailed. Remember those little backhoes that suddenly appeared on the scene. All those wonders we enjoyed in this country of frozen ground, down eight feet would I believe been impossible or virtually so if not for those little wonders. Shortly after we had installed our water system in my new house it was obvious our old well wouldn’t do, so we had an old well witcher come to look for a new well. He had a great reputation for finding water and he charged me $100.00 to find a well that he said couldn’t be pumped dry!! The only trouble was it was about a hundred yard from the house.

chuckled when they heard that’s where the stream was. There’s water down a ways we could drill right by your house if you’d wish.

Well I had paid that money for a “witched” well so I decided to stick with that. Yeah, they did find water and it was three times deeper than the witcher had promised but it was soft water and it was a very good producer. You couldn’t pump it dry.

We decided to hire a backhoe to lay a pipe to connect to our old line to the house and that 100 yards of trench was a touch heavy to pay for, but we had unlimited water, couldn’t have been possible by hand, also no more toilet holes to dig.

I don’t know how many of you have ever dug a goose blind pit, but down in that south country where the geese really fly, I’d like to acquaint you with the pleasures of digging said hole. In that part of the country Youngstown Hanna area, the top sail is scant inches deep and the blue shale below requires a pick or crowbar use for about a half hour for about a teaspoon or so of dirt loosed up to throw out. and the decoys set up before the geese started flying. Yes we basically worked all night and I was more or less exhausted.

Not a job for old people, good thing I was young then.

Later on I was working in Wetaskiwin and there was a cemetery where a backhoe couldn’t be used. I was elected to help dig a grave. Now that was quite an experience! We loaded the dirt in a little bob cat loader and it was dumped in a gravel truck outside the trees. A backhoe could have done the job in few minutes, it took two of us a long afternoon of hard steady digging.

When you see the mountains of earth, that are moved now with not a shovel in sight, and certainly no calluses on anyone’s hands from shovel handles. I used to be proud of the way I could make dirt move with a shovel and I know handling a backhoe takes a lot of doing. Man, but I’m glad I don’t have to level all those huge piles by hand though!!

M y n e i g h b o u rhood is never quiet.

Days begin and end with the racket of an industrial hum and squeal that never ceases.

My neighbourhood smells like rancid chicken and rotting diapers. Day after day, residents step outside to inhale an olfactory bouquet of the rank emissions released into the stratosphere by our most unsavoury neighbour.

My neighbourhood never sleeps. Even in the dark of night, we hear the whir of operations, augmented by the grind and squall of railcars bumping back and forth back and forth, the din of it regularly disturbing our slumber.

My neighbourhood, with its mature trees, private yards, and once quiet streets, has been permanently marred by the huffing beast spewing out its noise and pollution twenty-four hours a day. While other neighbourhoods look forward to the acquisition of new ameni-

ties and the commencement of beautification projects, we endure the expansion and sprawl of an aesthetically offensive, oblivious neighbour that smells bad.

My neighbourhood is my haven. I, and many others who reside here, live in old town by choice. In quiet conversation, we sometimes joke at the folly of it all. But beneath the humour, we lament our diminished environment.

What was once functional, even exceptional has devolved into fodder suitable for satire, thanks to an appalling lack of vision exhibited by a succession of municipal administrations, the first of which is responsible for approval of the construction of an industrial plant directly adjacent to a long established residential development, and then each one that followed, all having assented to the continued, unstoppable expansion of ADM Agri-Industries Co. without regard for the impact upon the residents who live in its shadow.

My neighbourhood now sags, retreating in deference to the looming bully pregnant with noise and effluent, the unknown content of which is expelled

through multiple stacks and dispersed upon us, its shallow-breathing neighbours. Perhaps we should submit a requisition for complimentary respiratory masks to protect us when we venture outdoors for a walk.

Adding to the relentless assault, with scarcely a blip of notice to those citizens whose daily commutes may be adversely affected, in the absence of any consultation with the public who must bear the negative consequences, and with barely a murmur of opposition from those few elected to City Hall to represent the best interests of the many, we are no longer able to travel a key thoroughfare that has existed for longer than I have lived.

Incredibly, a whole portion of a road in our town is owned outright, we are advised, by a corporate entity that has exercised its option to close it.

How did this happen? Was our input invited and we chose not to pay enough attention while important decisions were being made on our behalf? What shortsighted vision bears responsibility for all that has transpired? Who benefitted while the rest of us lost the quality

of an entire community to the insatiable appetite of a belching yellow beast that has come to define a neighbourhood, indeed a significant section within our city limits? Would they stand before the citizens now and explain so that we might begin to understand the abject ineptness at planning for the future, the foolishness, the selfishness, and the greed that must have induced a suspension of their common sense so as to have allowed such a tragi-comedy to unfold? Does any of it matter in the context of the irreversible nature of the result?

This is the sound of one voice: I protest. Let ADM Agri-Industries Co. close the road and expand itself further while hundreds navigate the remaining, already snarled traffic routes to their destinations. Let it proclaim that all the noise and hiss and pollution exists for the good of the community. Let it declare that the putrid air that we breathe is the perfume of prosperity and employment.

I am part of this community, and I declare that none of it has been good for me.

Money Talks While Doctors Walk Nick O’Dea Reporter

The Town of Vermilion is hoping to garner funds in order to purchase medical computer equipment.

A former Vermilion physician, Dr. Omar Bhuiyan, had recently left the Midtown Medical Clinic practice allowing the Town of Vermilion to take advantage

of a new opportunity.

Dr. Bhuiyan, who had left for a leave of absence in June before finalizing his departure in August, had amassed quite a bit of surplus computer equipment that the Town is looking to purchase.

Town Manager Dion Pollard said that with physicians moving more frequently and the Town now operating the clinic,

this will benefit the citizens of Vermilion as well as the Midtown Medical clinic.

“If this purchase goes through we will own most of the equipment in the clinic,” Pollard said. “It’s easier for us to own the equipment so as doctors come and go, we don’t owe them anything and they don’t owe us.”

At that time, 10 years ago, the Town of Vermilion was not the operator of the clinic.

Each physician was responsible for purchasing, ordering and maintaining their own equipment.

“The positive aspect of this is when new physicians arrive we have equipment available for them,” he said. “And

when they leave we will retain the equipment for future physicians.

Mayor Bruce Marriott said that this is not a sure thing, as negotiations still needs to be held with Dr. Bhuiyan.

“We’ve authorized a maximum of $2,000 for this essential tool that the doctors need,” Mayor Marriott said. “If we own most of the equipment there, we might as well own it all.”

Although there is currently enough operational equipment at this time, it is aging.

Pollard’s proposal outlined a maximum of $2,000 to be levied to purchase said equipment and was approved by Council members on Oct 1.

Hot Cheese and Onion Dip The cooler evening temperatures are making it very desirable to be cozy inside.

The tomatoes and onions from the garden have been harvested. They are perfect for fresh salsa. Some people prefer to omit eating raw onions for fear of having onion breath. The good news is that cooked onions retain the quercetin, undamaged by the heat, and are easier on the breath than raw onions.

Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers. Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.

Onions are a natural source of chromium, which assists in blood sugar control. Onions like garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body.

Properties of the onion also include being protective to the cardio-vascular system. The green onion tops are a source of vitamin A. With all of these great benefits it is no wonder that some researchers are wondering if it is actually the onion, that is responsible for the French paradox. Onions are one of Julia Childs favorite ingredients and are a staple in French cookery.

Onions add a lot a flavor and health benefits to so many dishes. This is a creamy dip, with lots of great flavor that is

The time may vary depending on the size of the chopped onion.

It may be served in the casserole dish and served with fresh veggies or chips for dipping. This dip may also be poured into a hollowed out loaf of round bread and served with chunks of bread for dipping.

Never Too Old To Feel Loved Nick O’Dea Reporter

The Town Council of Vermilion has signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 1 Seniors Day. With a high population of seniors in the Vermilion area, Mayor Bruce Marriott felt that it was a well deserved honour. However, he believes that seniors should be celebrated all year round. “ We’re all getting older,” Mayor Bruce Marriott said with a smile. “These seniors have built the Town of Vermilion into the great place it is today.”

Marriott said that more often than it should, seniors fade into the background and aren’t given credit for the commitment that they have to their

communities.

“Whenever someone needs volunteers, whenever someone needs a helping hand, or whenever an event for fundraising takes place; the seniors are always there to help with whatever they can,” Mayor Marriott said. “They have such deep pride in the values and people in their area.”

Margaret Gibson, a senior at the Vermilion Valley Lodge, said that while the gesture is well appreciated, she believes that the seniors in Vermilion have always felt honoured.

“When I was a young woman there were lots of programs in the church for seniors and I now attend some of those,” she said.” I think the Town of Vermilion has always made us seniors feel appreciated and a part of the

community.”

Margaret hopes that the town’s people continue to treat each other as well as they have treated its seniors.

“It’s been a pleasure to live here and I’m sure it will still be a pleasure to live here in the future.”

The Town of Vermilion currently hosts a “Senior’s Week” that features events, activities and performances organized by citizens and businesses from Vermilion and surrounding areas.

Mayor Marriott is glad that this proclamation will create another official celebration for those who created the backbone of the area’s communities.

“They instilled their values into the people around them,” he said. “And today you still see parents instilling the same values into their children.”

Margaret Gibson has grown up in the community of Vermilion. She loves the area and its residents believing that it is one of the best places to be a senior. The extra gratitude shown to the senior’s of the area by the signing of National Senior Day is just a bonus for her. Photo Nick O’Dea.

Beaver River Trestle Fundraising Campaign Set To Kickoff Marianne Price Submitted

In June of 2012, arsonists set the Beaver River Trestle on fire, causing severe damage to the historic wooden structure.

Located just outside the City of Cold Lake, the trestle is a destination landmark on Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail, a 300 km long multi-use recreation corridor on the former CN rail line. Since the fire, the trestle and access to Cold Lake via the Iron Horse Trail, has been closed.

of the rail corridor, hired MacDonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd. to stabilize the trestle, complete an assessment on the damages and develop a tender package and budget for rebuilding it. The price tag to restore the trestle is $1.5 million and trail enthusiasts are ready to fundraise.

The campaign kicked off at the Alberta Snowmobile and Powersports Show this past weekend. “We are excited to kick the fundraising campaign off – so many people have been in touch with our office to ask if we are going to rebuild the trestle and what they can do to help,” said Iron Horse Trail Administrative Coordi-

Senior’s Curling League Welcomes Casual Curlers Of All Ages This curling season the Senior’s League is expanding to include casual curlers of all ages, those who would like to curl, but cannot commit to a particular team or league on a regular basis.

Senior’s and Casual curling is every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 pm. Those who show up each day pick a card from a box to determine teammates, and the sheet of ice on which to curl.

Teammates then decide who plays which position. Every day you curl with someone different. New curlers are welcome, you will meet a lot of new people.

Local News Eva Olsson To Speak In Vermilion

If one word could arguably be used to describe Eva Olsson, it would be survivor. She witnessed one of the biggest atrocities in all of history; she survived the holocaust.

Losing 87 members of her family during the genocide had profoundly changed her life.

She now tours the world speaking with people about the power of hate and the importance of fighting against racism, bigotry, intolerance, and the significance of not standing idly by as others commit acts of injustice. Her message comes from the lessons she has learned throughout her life as well as her experiences as a prisoner of the Nazi regime.

She will also be doing a presentation to the students of J.R Robson on Monday, October 21. The Free-to-all event will be held at the Lakeland College Vermilion Campus Alumni Theatre on Thursday, October 24.

Sports Keep Heads High Marauders After Gutsy Season Cathy Wolters Columnist

“ I co u l d n ’ t h ave asked for any more from a team, hold your heads up high,” were head coach Ben Christians’ words to the Vermilion Marauders after their four touchdown playoff loss to the Westlock Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon.

Effort and guts often aren’t reflected on the scoreboard, but were recognized by the opposition. Westlock coach Jon Kramer described the Marauder effort as “awesome” commenting on a complex passing offense--he hadn’t seen before in seven seasons of Wheatland play-that was well executed. He also noted the “workhorses” who played both ways. “You [all] played your hearts out and brought your game—be proud of that.”

Coach Jamie Forsyth told the Marauders he was as proud of the 2013 team as of any teams he coached with winning records.

“You played hard. You never gave up. For that, I thank you.”

Under sunny skies and gusty winds, the Marauders and T-birds exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter.

Westlock scored early, less than two minutes into the first quarter. Vermilion countered with a drive that started on their

After trading offside calls, King grabbed another pass and took it inside the Westlock five.

On second and goal from the 3, Bielech had the ball stripped just short of the goal line, it caromed into the endzone where Katuski fell on it for the touchdown. King’s convert put the Marauders up 7-6.

The lead was short lived, as the ensuing kickoff was returned for a TD by Nick Schwarz, followed by the only T-bird two

point conversion of the day for a 14-7 Westlock lead with 6:30 still to play in the quarter.

The Marauders next touchdown came after a 42-yard wind assisted field goal attempt by Donovan Yaceyko. The kick was short, then fumbled by the returner and recovered by Jayden Keichinger on the Westlock 15. Katuski rushed for four yards, and a facemask call against the T-Birds put the ball a yard from the goal line.

In one of the bizarre, puzzling , strange and awful calls of the afternoon, the Marauders were called for a time count violation after a Westlock time out. The Marauders were on the line waiting for the umpire to step away from the ball when the referee’s whistle blew and flag flew.

No flags flew on the next play when King had a defender on his back before the ball arrived. King did score on third and goal from the one as he out leapt his opponents for the reception and then kicked the convert to tie the score at 14 with 2:14 left in the first quarter.

King, the captains’ star pick, ended the day with 107 yards, just less than Dustin Stenne’s 143. They accounted for most of the total 280 yards in the air. Stenne, one of the offensive stars, also had 15 rushing yards.

The Marauders started the second quarter taking over on downs on their 46, but punted on third down. Rowe’s punt was high and hung up in the wind. Before the game, officials told both teams that such kicks would be blown dead and the ball spotted from the high point. Instead, the play proceeded and Rowe recovered the punt. As where he recovered wasn’t in first down territory, the ball should have been Westlock’s. However, the referee actually indicated Vermilion first down. The bewildered benches watched a huddle of officials and then Westlock was given their first down.

The T-birds marched down to the Marauder one, but were stopped short of scoring by a defense that wouldn’t stretch any farther led by defensive game star Donovan Yaceyko. Unfortunately, Vermilion wasn’t able to move the ball and conceded a safety touch to get better field position.

Westlock chose to scrimmage the ball and it was placed on their 45. According to the rules used by Football Alberta, it should have been placed on their 35. However, the Marauder bench was informed that was a “CFL rule” and the “high school rule” was the 45.

Brett Snell, a two-way star for Westlock, scored with 2:51 left in the half to run the score to 22-14.

On their first play after the second half kickoff return the Marauders were judged to have fumbled, and that interpretative call led to an objectionable conduct penalty for the frustrated Vermilion bench. Two plays later Westlock scored another unconverted TD. Undeterred by the cloudier greyer sky, by the colder steadier winds and by the momentum changing calls, the Marauders continued to show offensive and defensive fight.

On another long pass and run play Stenne

moved ball 63 yards from the Marauder 44 to the Westlock 3. Going on the ground for three straight plays the Marauders were stopped just over a yard from the goal line.

Westlock converted the turn over on downs into another unconverted touchdown, scoring with less than 30 seconds left in the third quarter.

Quarterback John Dittmer scored at 9:09 of the final quarter. He taunted the Marauders by holding out the ball before he crossed the line. No unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called. The unconverted TD put the score at 42-14.

The teams traded possessions through the final quarter including three interceptions, two thrown by Rowe and a third grabbed by him.

Marauder Extra Points: After another Herculean effort on both sides of the ball, Keichinger was named a defensive game star. He had eight tackles and 32 rushing yards as well as playing on special teams...

In his second game back, Yaceyko had nine tackles and a sack. Katuski also chipped in a sack, three tackles and eight rushing yards on a wobbly ankle…Rowe, who also played safety, was the other offensive star.

He threw for nearly 300 yards, rushed for 57and had five tackles… From the last half of the final quarter, all the grade 12s played the rest of the game. Graduating players are Rowe, Bielech, Keichinger, Stenne and Austin Loran as well as rookies King, Jared Long, Brazilian exchange student David Moscoso and Dylan Decker. Missing was injured Blaine Armstrong …There were 5 time count calls in the game.

The Sr. High Cross Country Team spent a day last week in beautiful Fort McMurray competing with other schools from the zone to see who would go on to Provincials on Oct. 19th in Drayton Valley. Of the six students our coaches took up, two will be going on to Provincials. Karlee Melnyk and Stephen Baker moved forward. We will be sure to tell you how they did at Provincials in our next article.

Mannville School will be hosting the BTJHAA Highway 16 Junior Girls’ Volleyball Playoffs on Wednesday, October 30th.

In science seven students are learning about structures and forces. They have been busy preparing their bridge projects to present to the class, hoping to withstand up to 100lbs!

In science eight, the students have been working on Fresh and Salt Water systems.

Currently they have studied a documentary called Polar Apocalypse, which studies the effect of the melting of the polar icecaps and what exactly would happen if all of the world’s glaciers were to melt.

The grade nines’ are currently studying genetics and heredity. They are busy comparing some of the different traits and characteristics with their classmates and family members. Their last major topic was the different reproductive strategies found in different ecosystems.

The grade 10’s are studying different cellular processes and just finished up working with the microscopes. The class is looking forward to their frog dissection at the end of the unit. The Biology 20 class is also waiting patiently for some of our supplies to arrive which include fetal pigs,

owl pellets, and sheep hearts.

Mrs. Campbell has booked in storyteller, Bethany Ellis, who shares stories with the students including finger plays, stories with props, stories from around the world, and spooky stories just in time for Hallowe’en!

A survivor of the concentration camps, Ms. Olsson, author and public speaker, will be speaking to our students on October 25th. (note change of date) The Leadership 9 Fall Supper will be in conjunction with Awards night once again this year. We look forward to seeing you there on November 15, 2013.

The Vermilion Folk Club hosted a potluck supper that was highlighted with a performance by the duo Andrew Hardin and Jeannie Burns.

The duet performed at the Vermilion Royal Legion and interacted with the crowd throughout their performance.

Hardin, a resident of Texas, said that his musical career began at the tender age of eight and he hasn’t looked back since. His father, who was a military man, moved his family across the country to a number of different states which immersed Hardin in many musical genres.

“I started playing drums at eight and guitar at 15. By the time I was 19 I was playing guitar semi-professionally,” he said. “Our style is very different because we’ve been influenced by many different genre’s including blues, country, and R and B.” Burns, who previously performed in

a family group called The Burns Sisters, said playing with Hardin has created a great avenue for her to improve her musical skills.

“I have been performing for over 30 years. In the last few years I’ve really brought up my guitar skills because I have to keep up with Andrew, and I’ve learned quite a bit,” she said. “In my previous endeavours I wasn’t the only guitar player so I’ve been able to learn a lot.”

A New York Native, Burns said that early music on the radio, such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, opened her mind to a new scope of musical genres.

Vermilion Folk Club President Rita Barr said it’s a great opportunity to spread the therapeutic values of music, as well as expanding horizons.

“It’s great to be able to bring a genre of music to the community that may not be what they normally hear,” she said.

“It’s wonderful to be able to help broaden horizons and bring more culture to the area.”

A l t h o u g h Andrew Hardin and Jeannie Burns have only been performing together for a few years, they believe their styles complement each ot he r a nd a d d and interesting change to the folk genre music.

College News

Lakeland College Century Club Grows By Five Lakeland College Submitted

Buffalo Twins is a mural mosaic created to celebrate the 2005 centennial of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The concept came from a trio of St. Albert artists who got CIBC to sponsor the project. Over 270 artists from both provinces contributed to the mural by painting a panel depicting something about one of the provinces based on a guideline from designer Lewis Lavoie. The mural was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 and it found a permanent home at Lakeland College in 2007.

Ever to Excel, the college motto, was chosen from 25 entries in a 1928 contest.

James Allanach, a first year student from

Mannville, came up with the motto. From that point, the motto was added to a school crest and it has remained part of the Lakeland College identity.

Bill Kondro was the chair of Lakeland College’s board of governors between 1998 and 2003. That board laid the groundwork for the campus expansion that would eventually bear his name.

Kondro was chair of the capital campaign that raised funds for the expansion. Two decades earlier he was mayor of Lloydminster between 1982 and 1989. During that time city council donated a parcel of land that is part of the current Lakeland College campus. Kondro received Lakeland College’s first honorary degree in 2006. The Bill Kondro entrance scholarship was created by the college in 2007.

On September 9, 2008, the Bill Kondro Wing was officially opened at the Lloydminster campus.

Migration is a commemorative art project celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Lloydminster campus. The mobile sculpture hangs from the ceiling of the campus cafeteria and accentuates the building’s architecture. The 100 geese represent the college’s centennial. Laura Hale, who was the city’s artist in residence, lived at the campus residence as the college’s contribution to the community project.

Her housing was beside the lake in Bud Miller All Seasons Park. The Tisdale, Sask. artist was inspired by migrating geese that stopped at the lake. Migration was unveiled at an anniversary celebration in January 2011.

The Vic Juba Community Theatre was born through tremendous community effort in a nearly two decade process. A theatre was part of plans for a consolidated Lloydminster campus in 1987. This phase three development was put on hold in 1994. However, the community kept the project alive with leadership from a number of people including the fundraising chair Vic Juba. Eventually with funds in place, sod was turned for the project in 2001 with the multipurpose theatre opening in 2002.

Author Hosts Crash-Course Nick O’Dea Reporter

The Goodlife Institute of Vermilion Alberta hosted a creative writing and learning seminar this past week.

Albertan author Lorna Nicholson spoke to students at Vermilion Elementary School, as well as St. Jerome’s Catholic School before holding a 2-day event in which registered attendants could get an insiders look at becoming a published author.

Vermilion Elementary School Librarian Chris MacMillan said that the importance of encouraging a child’s literacy cannot be measured.

“This is a great opportunity to see, visually, what an author is and what they can

work to become if they choose,” she said.

“We’ve had authors visit us before and when they leave the kids are just clamoring to get their books from the Library. It’s very nice to see them with enthusiasm for learning.”

Nicholson said she enjoys interacting with writers of all ages and tries to encourage many to reach for the seemingly unattainable. She said the road to becoming a published author is not an easy one and many people get discouraged.

“Many authors struggle with different aspects of the story,” she said. “Many people struggle with the ending of a story or developing characters. I hope to give them tips to help them become more wellrounded authors.”

Nicholson said she often struggles with the middle of her stories.

Brand development coordinator for Goodlife, Geoffrey Person, said that while the school events were focused on children, the weekend classes were catering to adults who wish to learn the ropes that can help turn them into a published author.

“It was an awesome event that unfolded in our community that really engages its citizens in an art that can help them in many different ways,” Person said. “For many people writing is a way to express themselves. It can have many positive effects on a person.”

A number of students were recognised for both athletic, work experience, green certificate and academic achievements in Grades one through twelve. School administrative staff member, Nadia Melnyk served as MC for the evening and the audience heard messages from

Each of the five recipients were awarded $1,000 each. The evening ended with Mrs. Joyce Baker leading the room in singing God Save The Queen.

The County of Vermilion River reminds electors in Division 3, Division 4 and Division 7 to vote for their elected representative for the next four year term in the municipal election being held on Monday, October 21, 2013. Two polling stations in each division will be open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Election Day. Surrounding us every day and night are a seemingly infinite amount of stars, meteors, asteroids, and special objects that have been used to guide and amuse mankind for centuries.

The art of Astrophotography is not just as simple as taking pictures of the sky. It requires knowledge of the stars itself and some expensive equipment but according to Astrophotographer Rob Baron, all people need to enjoy the stars is to pick up a pair of cheap binoculars.

“I’ve been interested since I was a kid, but I’ve only been doing astrophotography for about ten years,” he said. “I bought my first telescope and tried to put a camera on

it. The first pictures were terrible.”

Baron, who has built himself a personal observatory, said that there are many skills that astrophotography requires that one will gather in time.

Vermilion Brand Development Coordinator for The Good Life Institute, Geoffrey Person, said he’s glad the event was well attended and hopes the Town of Vermilion will continue to participate in the events.

“We have something that you really can’t do in Edmonton, you can’t do in Saskatoon, and we have these beautiful dark starry nights that are perfect for astronomy,” he said. “It’s something we’ve never done before. This is our first night and we hope it continues to flourish.”

Baron hoped to show the group an Iridium flare, sun glare off of iridium satellites, but it was not visible that night.

Bullying Can Happen Anywhere Gwen Randall-Young Submitted

Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” ~ Harvey S. Firestone Bullying does not happen only with children on the playground. Siblings may bully each other. Parents may bully their children; children may bully their parents. Husbands and wives may bully each other, and teens may be bullied by their girlfriend/boyfriend. Sadly, teach-

ers sometimes bully, as do coaches.

Bullying also happens in the workplace.

If one does not have high self-esteem to begin with, it is easy for them to begin to think less of themselves because of what the bully has said or done. This negative self-evaluation can affect all areas of life. If one is used to being bullied or put-down, they may attract others who do the same, and put up with it because they always have.

Bullies are insecure people. They do not feel so good about themselves, and they get a false sense of strength by overpowering others. Arguing with a

bully usually only brings on more insults.

If you are a young person being bullied you need to get help from an adult. You do not have to put up with being treated badly. Parents must intervene if siblings are bullying one another. Similarly, parents need to protect their children from bullying by the other parent.

If you are being bullied in the workplace you also need to let management or human resources know. If management is doing the bullying you can either file a human rights complaint, or start looking for a different job.

If you are being bullied in a relation-

ship, you need to set some clear boundaries. It is important not to allow yourself to continually be abused. If it is a friendship or relationship, and if the person will not stop, you need to end it.

If you are married, and the bullying will not stop, you can try professional help. If the bullying persists, you must do what you can to get away. This is no way to live, and eventually it will make you physically ill.

Above all, have faith and belief in yourself. Be your own best friend and stand up for yourself. You are not the bully’s definition of you.

Culture Of Hate: Cyber-Bullying And Sexting Part 1 Nick O’Dea Reporter

There once was a time when a bully would follow you home from school, beat you up, and be on his merry way. The sanctuary of home and the protection of parents was often enough to deter even the most hardened tormentor.

Nowadays with internet sites like Facebook and Twitter, the teasing and humiliation can take place at home just as easily as in the schoolyard.

The victim may not be physically assaulted or receive any injuries, but the mental anguish and emotionally crippling abuse is often worse than a physical pain. A physical wound will most times heal, while emotional abuse will stay and fester.

According to the Canadian Institute of Health Research, at least 1 in 3 Canadian children have been bullied recently.

Forty seven per cent of Canadian parents say that their child is being bullied and 73 per cent of all bullying reported had taken place on the internet.

That means 19 per cent of bullying, according to the study, is never reported to the parents or guardians of the victims.

In many instances, the guardians do not even know the child is being bullied.

While some people say that there will

always be bullies, many agree that the methods of bullying have become more invasive, more intense, and more widespread.

Allen Chase, Principal of St. Jerome’s Catholic School, said that even in a small town like Vermilion, cyber bullying is still found and is dealt with accordingly.

“We have had instances where we have called the RCMP to come down if it was serious enough,” Principal Chase said. “We’ve also tried to deal with it at the school level, even if the bullying didn’t occur in school.”

Principal Chase said he believes that bullying is detrimental to a child’s school work, as well as overall health.

“The effect is devastating to a kid,” he said. “It can strip all the confidence from them and leave them with absolutely no self esteem.”

Sometimes the effects of bullying are more than the youth can handle, and unfortunately, some turn to suicide as a means to end their personal struggle.

On Sept. 8, 2013, Saskatoon teen Todd Loik had enough with the torment he received online and ended his life.

After Loik’s death, his mother told reporters she had found pages upon pages of insults and taunts directed at her son. She could not bring herself to read them all.

Vermilion RCMP Sergeant Mike McGinley said that young people are becoming

less physical in terms of bullying, and are taking to the internet because they feel safer behind a computer screen.

“When someone sends a hurtful or threatening message to someone on social media, they don’t see the effect that it has first hand,” said Sergeant McGinley. “Bullies are cowards and they love an audience, and what better audience then posting on someone’s Facebook account where all their friends, as well as the victim’s friends, can see it.”

Principal Chase agreed and said that many youth often feel shielded by the internet, as if they are untouchable.

“Everyone has moments of anger

and frustration,” said Principal Chase.

“Technology allows us to just blurt this out onto a computer screen and not have the person there to see the consequence.”

Principal Chase said that a lot of the appeal of cyber bullying is the distance between the victim and bully.

“With all these public forums and sites, it’s just so easy to do nowadays. But it’s not even just kids. I’m not trying to single them out because many adults do it too.”

The J. R. Robson Cross Country running team will go down in its school’s history.

For the first time in over 30 years, they brought home a team victory securing the top spot in the 2A Zone Cross Country competition held in Fort McMurray.

Placing fourth out of 22 schools, Coach Cheryl Felt said the 12-member team worked very hard and deserved to pull away with the win.

“I knew we were doing well but I didn’t

realize how good they were doing,” she said. “Some coaches came up to me and said ‘hey, your team is doing really good’.”

Jake Wynnychuk said he chose running after being pushed by his mother to try all the sports he could.

“I tried out cross-country and it turned out I really liked it,” he said. “So I’ve stuck with it now for a couple of years.”

Trisha Mead said there is no secret to becoming a good cross country runner. It hinges on a balance of proper eating and sufficient exercise.

“I try to eat healthy, it’s important to try and do so,” she said. “I love chocolate and it’s hard not to eat it a lot.”

Felt was quick to remind Mead that there are healthy brands of chocolate with a higher percentage of cacao, but it rarely tastes as good as the milky kind.

Cameron Web, bronze medal winner in

the Junior Boys division, said the competition at Provincials will be much tougher, but that just means his team will have to push it to the next level.

“We just have to train harder than we’ve done and make sure we have the right mind-set going into the tournament,” he said. “I’m very proud to be part of the first J. R. Robson winning cross country team in 35 years.”

Felt said they are the finest team she has coached with a work ethic and drive that will be remembered in their school’s history, adding that winning at Provincials, or even placing, is just the icing on the cake.

“I’m already proud of what they accomplished,” she said. “They’ve shown what hard work and determination can accomplish.”

The Vermilion Elementary School (VES) students and staff filled the school’s gymnasium to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and dedication each teacher displays in their roles as educators.

The event was held in conjunction with World Teacher Day on Oct. 4 and as the students sat on the floor in a semi circle, designated students were asked to come forward and attach to a large ball, a piece of paper representing the many countries of the world. The teachers lifted the ball high in the air in a display of how they carry the responsibility of educating students all over the world.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted On October 11, BTPS celebrated its long service awards at the Celebration Day at JR Robson. The below listed VES staff members were recipients. For 5-9 years of service: Mrs. Bast, Mrs. Long, Mrs. MacMillan, Mrs. McCullough, Mrs. McLaughlin, Mrs. Myshaniuk, Ms. Pentelichuk, and Mrs. Tupper. For 10 years of service: Ms. King, Mrs. Moses, and Mrs. Page. For 20 years of service: Ms. Birch, Mrs. Murie, and Mrs. Walsh. For 25 years of service: Mrs. Marriott and Mrs. Tomkins. Congratulations to all of the above staff, and to the other staff members in the school who have served many years, but didn’t reach a five year milestone this year. Also, as a part of our celebration day, we were fortunate to get to hear the gold and silver medalists who won in the superintendent’s speaking competition in April, one of which made this writer a very proud auntie.

The Roots of Empathy classes had their first 2013-14 baby visits with Mr. Haslehurst and the grade 2 classes. Maddox dropped by and was wide awake for his class. Students checked their predictions as to what Maddox was able to do.

Archie slept through most of his class. He did manage to wake up for a while though.

Students also learned some differences between a real baby like Archie and a doll.

Jace was our last little teacher and our youngest baby. The students weighed and measured Jace. Students will keep track of how much he grows this year. Thanks to all our little teachers and moms for coming to V.E.S. VES had its AR assembly on Oct. 15. The “Just Say Hi” campaign (VIBE

provided the program and the prizes) drew six student names and awarded them with gift cards to Subway and the Dollar Store.

Congratulations to the following winners: Kailey in 6B, Austin in 4B, Dylan in 4C, Mitchell in 3A, Alex in 3B, and Wren in 2A. The three grade 2 classes presented a unique patterning assignment coming up with Halloween pictures to show off their patterns. It was done in the form of a contest and Connor, Lily, and Emerson’s designs were used at the assembly. This was the first assembly to honor our accelerated readers with prizes and the kids were super excited. VES also announced that the jaguar will be used as our school mascot.

From Oct 15-21, 4A went around to classes at noon to do a garbage survey.

One student per room monitored what was being placed in the garbage and what was being recycled for the week. This was done as a part of their science curriculum.

October 21-25 is School Bus Safety Week. Please take an opportunity to thank your bus drivers for the wonderful job they do in transporting your children safely to and from school every day. With it being school bus safety week, please take the time to remind your children of the school bus rules and please DO NOT PASS A SCHOOL BUS WHEN ITS RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

Stu d e nt, s t af f, parents and sponsors gathered in the evening of Friday, Oct. 11 to celebrate the accomplishments of the students at St. Jerome’s Annual Awards Night. Student Council President, Lyndsie Elliott, was the MC for the evening and did a fabulous job keeping the program flowing smoothly.

After the congratulatory messages were delivered, Awards were handed out. First, those students who received Honors from grade 9-12 received their certificate and pin. Awards were then given for highest marks received in each subject according to grade. The final Awards given were memorial, citizenship, work ethic, and spirit awards. Congratulation to Grade 12 student Stacie McCrea for receiving awards for achieving the Highest Overall Grade 12 marks, and to Callum MacMillian for receiving the Keith Martin Memorial Award and the Spirit of St. Jerome’s Award.

On Wednesday, October 9 Vermilion Fire Chief, Bill Roth and firefighter, Bryce Lytle, visited Mrs. Roth’s grade 4 class.

The children enjoyed learning about fire safety in their homes and what to do in case of a fire emergency. After their presentation the children were given rides in the fire truck. It was a very exciting experience met with lots of smiles and exclamations of “That was AWESOME!” St. Jerome’s would like to thank the Vermilion Fire Department for their visit to our school.

VIBE just wrapped up their annual Just

Say Hi Campaign. We had a great time saying hi to businesses in the community, kids at the other schools and especially to the visitors who came to St. J with their buttons. Thanks to Keily Stetson with AHS Addictions, Bill Carter with Victim Services and Constable Stringer who stopped by twice with his RCMP buttons.

With over 100 students returning their sets of buttons we had a lot of names to choose from. Our winners were Amanda Goodbrand, Kale Riley, Jake Kisinger, Morgan Cooper, Austin Laurence and Travis Musijowski. Hope you’ll all play Just Say Hi again next year with us.

Friday, Oct. 11, found the teachers of St. Jerome’s busy attending a variety of Professional Development sessions.

Approximately twelve staff members spent the day finishing off their St. John’s First Aide Course, which was instructed

by Jim Jackson from Mannville. The Elementary staff gathered with the Speech and Occupational Therapy team from the Health Unit to learn more about Visualizing and Verbalization and how it can benefit our students in the classroom. Thank you to Nancy Whelan, Kristen Burns, Kayla Roth and Tanis Pollard for presenting this very informative session. Other staff members spent the day on Program planning and assessment.

We have been very busy in kindergarten. We’ve been learning routines, making new friends, learning our letters and numbers, singing songs, and playing games. We culminated Fire Prevention Week with a trip to the Vermilion Fire Hall.

It was a magnificent trip. A great way to begin our field trips for the year. We

left with two important messages. Have nament – Oct. 23, Lakeland College Open your parents check your smoke detector House – Oct. 25, Picture Retakes – Nov. 6. and make an escape plan with a meeting place. The children enjoyed spraying water from the hose, going into the fire truck, and listening to the various siren sounds. They listened intently as Anton and Derek explained what firemen wear, equipment they use and what they do.

Many were inspired to become firefighters when they grow up.

Animal Health and Sciences Lakeland Career opportunity for an College students have visited many of the elementary classrooms over the past two weeks. The team of students presented many informative sessions about cattle, CA, CGA or CMA wanted pigs, sheep, horses, and chickens.
