Cadets Start Year Off With Swearing In A New Officer Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The 2645 Vermilion Royal Canadian Army Cadets started their year off with a public open house and the swearing-in of a new officer.

The group met at the Lieutenant Colonel Craig Armoury on Sept. 17 for an evening of drill practises, registration for new members and tours of the newly renovated areas of the building.

With financial support from Alberta Lottery funds, the building has new flooring on the main level and new energy efficient light fixtures which

will use nearly half the power the old ones used. A new higher efficiency heating system was also installed in the Captain Wayne Campbell CD parade square, the main hall area which was named after former Cadet Commanding Officer, Wayne Campbell.

These upgrades are just the beginning for the building which was originally built in 1952. Don Henry, Cadet Lia is o n O f f i ce r fo r th e Ve r m ili o n Legion said the Legion is hoping over the next few years to have the main roof replaced, bathrooms upgraded with new fixtures and taps as well as

paint the entire bottom level.

Af ter a b rief cante en b reak fo r the cadets, the formal swearing in ceremony of Mrs. Nitasha Irvine got underway.

Nitasha Irvine (Anderson) grew up in Vermilion and was a member of the Vermilion cadet program throughout her school years.

The regimented way of life is not all that foreign to Irvine as her father Arthur Anderson, served as a Park Ranger with the Vermilion Provincial Park for a number of years.

I n 19 95 sh e l ef t th e o rg a nization and pursued a career in nursing, later earning a diploma as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She met and married her husband Don, and the two started a family in Saskatchewan. The couple have two daughters, Elizabeth who is 12 years old and younger sister Rebecca who is 10. After a situation presented itself about a year ago, Irvine said it was time to make the move back to Vermilion, back “home”.

Irvine and her family moved back and are currently in the process of building a home just north west of town, a p ro ces s wh i ch c a n p rove very time consuming. But in between working as a LPN in the day surgery ward of the Wainwright Health Centre as well as two other facilities, she has

still managed to find time to become very active with the Vermilion cadets.

She has helped with some of the renovations of the facility including helping acquire funding for the new flooring on the main level as well as a complete renovation of the Cadet Training room in the basement of the building. Irvine donated the money needed to completely gut and refinish the room and her husband Don, donated the labour. As a way of thanking the Irvines, the Vermilion Legion and Vermilion Cadets have renamed and dedicated the room in honour of their generosity.

A f t e r a y e a r- l o n g p r o c e s s o f becoming an Officer with the organization, the assigning of a new training officer has come to fruition.

Captain Darby Whitebone of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment accepted Irvine’s pledge of oaths to become the newest Cadet Instructor Cadre with the 2645 Vermilion Royal Canadian Army Cadets.

Don Irvine was also honoured for his work with the group in a second presentation ceremony where Captain W h i te b o n e p re s e n te d h i m w i th a Loyal Edmonton Regimental coin. The honour is normally reserved only for Regiment or very special people with the approval of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Commanding Officer.

Both Don and Nitasha Irvine received congratulatory handshakes from the legion members and cadets in attendance.

Farkash’s FOR CASH Wins Beaufort Stakes Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Lo c al th o ro u g h b re d ra ce h o rse owners, Lyle and Phylis Farkash, have got to be happy with the way their horse, For Cash, ran in the sixth race of the day, The Beaufort Stake race, at the Northlands race track on Sept.

21.

The Farkash’s are not strangers to the winner’s circle at Northlands as last year their horse Toccetive, came from nearly last at the start of the 2012 Canadian Derby, to overtake Dougs Buddy in a history making finish for trainer Joan Petrowski, of Viking Stables. Both the first and second place horses in the race were trained by Petrowski, making a first in the history of the Canadian Derby for a female trainer to claim first and second in the race.

For Cash took the first post position in race number six for the day, giving him the inside advantage for the race.

A late change in tack may have had some people worried as trainer Dale Greenwood opted to remove the blinkers off the horse bridle for the race.

The race, started off a bit slow for the horses with For Cash running in fifth position for most of the race. It was the final end of the back stretch when For Cash made his move as he passed horse after horse edging his way to the front of the pack.

At the wire it was Farkash’s For Cash the clear winner with a time just under one minute, forty eight seconds. The Vermilion farm family took to the winner’s circle to pose for the winning picture of the thirty first running of the Beaufort Stakes.

When interviewed after the race Phylis Farkash said it was a special day for the Farkash family and acknowledged their family members at home working hard to complete combining of the crops while they attended the day of horse racing.

In an emotional statement, Lyle Farkash said that very day marked the anniversary of the passing of Phylis’ father and said he felt he was watching over them at the races.

For Cash’s jockey for the race was Fernando Hernandez Perez and the horse’s trainer Dale Greenwood, said For Cash is a special horse who has

never “run a bad race.” He added the Farkash’s are great horse owners to work with.

The Farkash horse has a impressive career record with nine races

under his belt, claiming three first places, one second place, and three third place finishes. The three year old gelding’s earnings total more than $90,000.

In the early af ternoon hours of September 19, 2013 Lloydminster RCMP were dispatched to a report of a three vehicle collision in the 4600 block of 5 4 Avenue. The preliminar y investigation revealed that a black Dodge truck had been traveling southbound at high rate of speed, in a residential area. The truck passed a vehicle causing a minor collision and then struck a second vehicle in a significant impact, disabling both vehicles. The offending driver imme-

diately proceeded to walk away from the scene. Responding police investigators were directed by witnesses to the driver who began to run from the area upon police arriving. The driver wa s p u r s u e d o n fo o t fo r s eve r a l blocks and apprehended without incident. Investigators utilized a police service dog to search the area and discovered evidence believed to be discarded by the fleeing driver.

31 year old Shane Robert COMEAU of Edmonton has been charged with several offences including Dangerous Driving, Criminal Fail to Remain, Obstruction and Possession Of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking. COMEAU was ordered released by a Justice of the Peace after posting $6500 cash bail and is bound by several conditions including not to be in the city of Lloydminster except for court appearances. COMEAU’s next appearance will be October 15, 2013 in Lloydminster, AB provincial court.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

It is very obvious th a t th e 2013 fa l l season is upon us with the leaves turning colour, cooler d ays a n d sh o r te r dayli g ht h o u rs.

There is something else this year’s fall season has signalled to us and that is the 2013 Municipal Election.

Yes, today is nomination day for the many towns, villages and counties in Alberta.

I h ave to a d m i t th a t w h e n th i s reporter came of age to actually vote, I had little to no interest in voting. It wasn’t that I didn’t feel it was importa nt, b ut rath er I did n’ t fe el well informed to cast an educated vote.

Many young people may feel the very same way. The feeling of intimidation when striding into the polling station can sometimes scare young

voters away from exercising their right.

On the other side of the coin are the people who feel if you do not vote, you should not complain about the decisions and actions of the elected officials.

Today, Sept. 23, is the day when p o te n t i a l c a n d i d a te s w i l l s u b m i t their nomination packages to their r e s p e c te d m u n i c i p a l o f f i c e s a n d throw their hat into the ring.

Many are hoping to make positive changes to the communities where they live and genuinely want to work for the good of the community.

Some will make it to council and some will not. Those who are voted in will take to their positions with grace and the gung-ho attitude to get the job done.

But all the same, both will most likely face major criticism and ridicule at some point in their political career.

Council members are expected to

carry themselves well in public and are “always on duty” ready to answer questions from concerned constitu e n t s i n c l u d i n g ro a d co n d i ti o n s , municipal projects and the spending of taxpayer funds, just to name a few.

Council representatives could be confronted anytime, anywhere, and are expected to respond in a respectful manner even when these questions can be fielded at them in an unfriendly atmosphere.

At the same time, people have to realize that most are working for the better of the community and out of the entire general population, only a very few will let their name stand for election. The job can be very intense at times and involve many long hours of various committees and community meetings, all which take time away from their families and own personal interests.

What drives these people to put themselves in the forefront and take

on the responsibility of running our communities and face possible ridicule for their actions? Actions and decision making that not many others want to have to make, but they will most likely complain about afterwards.

The fact is, these people are willing to face the potential grievances of the community and still hand those nomination papers forward, all in an attempt to make their communities a better place for all of us live and work.

This next month, candidates will be knocking on doors, shaking hands at fall suppers and visiting coffee shops all in hopes of getting your vote. This once ignorant, young voter will be respectfully listening to the campaign stances of each of the candidates in my area, all in hopes of casting an educated vote on October 21. Will you?

Only once in this life so far have I felt in jeopardy due to my physical appearance or race. It was a long time ago, when I was just 18 years old and traveling outside of Canada with my brother. In my naiveté, it never occurred to me then that I might encounter cold glances of disdain or find myself on the receiving end of derisive commentary from strangers who knew nothing about me. But I did. It occurred in a park on a sunny, blue-sky kind of day where we’d stopped to take a break from driving. My brother went to buy some drinks while I took a stroll, the intention being to meet a few steps in where we’d take some shade. I noticed soon enough that there were no other whiteys in sight. That’s what one of the people leaning up against a big mesquite tree called me: “whitey”. Maybe I’d stepped into the wrong pathway or just happened upon an unfriendly group, I can’t be sure. What seemed apparent was that it was best to move on as quickly as possible.

No one harmed me, not bodily anyway.

But I will not forget the chill that arose from somewhere deep within during those

brief moments. My presumption of security shattered like thin glass on concrete and even though it was a beautiful day, as I passed near the branches of that tree, the very air felt sinister. Later, when my fear had subsided and morphed into bewilderment, I considered how it might feel to be continually in the position of an unwelcome and despised Other.

I can’t say whether or not it was a conscious decision in that moment of my 18th year just after someone spat on the ground and, in a menacing tone addressed me as “whitey”-----I can claim neither to having been so virtuous nor so highminded------but I believe it was that particular experience that led me to practice a kind of deliberate colourblindness thereafter. I didn’t ever want to make assumptions about anyone, especially based on appearance. Nor did I ever want to be party to any behaviour that left another human being feeling fearful, unwelcome, or unworthy.

There have been many times when I’ve experienced the position of the loner or newcomer in a social setting. It’s interesting to observe sometimes how adults, confident and ordinary, even bright and good people, neglect to extend basic courtesy.

Instead, people more often than not opt to cluster together with others already familiar to them. They gather where they find security, where they feel a sense of belonging, where they have established themselves as charter members of an exclusive club for which the list of requirements granting admission remains invisible.

I can’t claim to be exempt from this creaturely habit of seeking out the known.

When uncomfortable, it’s a natural human and animal tendency to seek out those who welcome you and for whom you feel affinity.

Experience has taught me though, that the gift of extending a smile of acknowledgement, of saying hello in there when encountering a newcomer, returns a hundredfold in benefits. In being willing to invite someone new to step forward out of the shadows, we realize that we have taken a giant step toward demystifying the Other and, in the process, increased our own knowledge as well as the quality of the community that we share. Where each member holds a vested interest in any venture, it becomes more likely that the emerging environment will be one of strength, enrichment, and unwavering support.

“Take a bite, I write. Take a nibble, I scribble,” she said referring to the lifestyle journaling.

The group will learn about the different aspects of obesity including nutrition, how to make healthy choices when eating at restaurants, managing stress as well as health related issues like high blood pressure and diabetes.

The group will also be provided with pedometers free of charge to help track the physical activity of each participant.

Carlson told the group they should set realistic expectations as they will most likely never look the same as they did when they were younger.

The PCN class will also provide information about the various surgical options available to the more obese people.

Day one of the class provided the group with the overview of the future sessions and what they can expect over the next 13 weeks.

The PCN classes are provided free of charge to anyone wanting to enroll. The sessions are sponsored by Alberta Health Services in an attempt to promote healthier communities.

BEWARE OF US BUILT MOBILE HOMES THAT DO NOT MEET CANADIAN STANDARDS. PART 2 Continued from last week.

On two separate occasions I have come across new trailers that did not have vapor barrier in the walls or ceiling. As you can imagine frost in the winter naturally built up in the walls or ceilings and before you know it these unsuspecting folks had moisture related issues including mold. The trailers in question were both CSA approved and had the “Meets national building code” stickers. These stickers are important but they do not guarantee that Canada standards were followed, only that Canadian standards were supposed to be followed.

In both cases the repair costs of these nearly new homes was extensive. To add vapor barrier after the fact is so costly it is almost not worth it. My advice is, if you are buying a mobile home built across the border ask specifically if it has vapor barrier. The sales person is likely going to be quick to say “of course” but press the issue and dig deeper to be as sure as you can be. If there is an attic hatch open it and check for yourself. If you can’t find any ask your lawyer for a compliance letter that will allow you to return the trailer for a refund if it is missing the vapor barrier.

Sounds extreme but it is an extreme problem so be prepared.

Remembering Those Old Binders Franklin Wolters Columnist

When I was a little kid, a binder was a complicated piece of equipment with all its drives and chains and especially that troublesome knotter!! I remember watching the preparation Dad went through trying to get his old Frost and Wood binder field ready.

The operation of the whole machine was to run all the crop through the mechanism that put a twine string around the crop and tied it securely into a bundle that could be handled much easier than loose material. In just a few minutes with either bundles or loose material certainly would convince the rankest greenhorn. So the binder was born and the cantankerous knotter developed.

Every machine company had their own try at making a simpler version, but the simplest knotter had many working parts that had to be adjusted and timed so all the functions had to happen in their correct order. The twine had to stay threaded in the needle and the twine holder had to be adjusted so it held the twine. Change the twine at your peril, you’d have to adjust the holder and twine tension or you’d have to rethread the whole thing and run the loose stuff through or incite the ire of the guy loading it on the bundle rack.

I know a lot of men just would leave the loose stuff lay to punish the binder operator who didn’t know how to get his binder to tie!!

Dad would explain all the adjustments and why they mattered and

stress just a little could mean a lot. In the course of my time running different binders his council really stood me in good stead. I always seemed to be able to coax a knotter to work, even the ones on a “Welger Baler”. The whole knotter assembly would move forward or back so the twine could be made to go somewhere near the middle of the bundle no matter how long it was. If the crop was uneven in height it could keep you busy on the lever that made that adjustment. The butter board that kept the butt of the bundle pushed down and kept even could be moved in or out too. There was lots of adjustments to help you keep your bundles neat. It was easy to tell the true operator as to how the bundles were formed.

Every binder had a bundle carrier that had to be attended to if you wanted to have nice windows all lined up so the bundle wagons could load up easier.

You didn’t just ride a binder, if it was operated correctly it really kept you busy. It was a full time job that didn’t give you much time to day dream. In a good crop the knotter was kicking out bundles almost continually and that was with a seven or eight foot table on the binder. It also meant the canvasses had to be made to run straight or you’d have grief when you hit a spot of heavier crop. It was common to pull out a bit to not overload the outfit to cause problems.

Remember the old binders were powered by a ground driven, bull wheel that would just skid if the load got too much. Our next binder was a horse drawn John Deere that Dad bought

at Ben Calverts sale and he converted it to a tractor hitch and pulled it with our little 9N Ford. I can’t even imagine having to control four horses and run a binder all at the same time. I had my hands full just doing a proper job on the binder without managing horses too. Most of those old horse drawn binders had a place to stand the bamboo horse whip that was 15 or 16 feet long, so you could tune up a lagging horse and get it to pull its share. It must have been a trying job for horses to have to drag that noisy machine around on a hot day. Our last two binders were power binders, one

was a Cockshutt that seemed to need to be fixed or repaired on a regular basis, it wouldn’t tie or seemed to hate to and it just wasn’t an efficient outfit.

The last binder was a John Deere 10 foot that ran smooth, tied with hardly a miss and was joy to run. My brother ran the old Perkins Fordson, and I ran the binder. Many days would go without a stop except to replenish the twine and grease it, and it made the best of bad job. It is hard to imagine that when you got the crop cut the work was just getting started. You had to stook and thresh it yet.

Fall is always such a pretty season with the changing of the colours. It is also a very busy time. Dust is flying in the air as farmers are busy in the fields with the harvest and fall work.

Teachers and students are back to school and are busy with lessons and homework.

Parents are just beginning to add running their children to and from after school sports and activities. It is still wedding season until mid October, which means I still have bridal bouquets for my niece’s

wedding to make and one bridesmaid’s dress to alter.

I must confess that the summer has been pretty busy as well with summer weddings and bridal showers for three of my former young employees, two of which are family.

Weddings, harvest, working full time and a new baby grand daughter have made this summer and fall wonderfully full and busy.

I have found that when life is so busy I tend to fall back on my tried and true recipes.

I also tend to grab my favorite clothes to wear and I am a little less creative in both dressing and cooking. Sometimes it takes quiet time to be creative, other times,

necessity is the mother of invention, as it was for my harvest smoothies.

The warm weather brought the harvest on fast, and sometimes the men, who were busy getting the combines ready to go, did not come in until after 2:00 for dinner and by 6:00 they were still not really hungry, but they also didn’t like to eat a heavy meal late at night. They got their first ever harvest smoothies, which I made in a blender out of yogurt, whey protein powder, avocado, kiwi, banana and crushed ice. I poured the mixture into large plastic glasses, added a straw and ran them out to the field.

They are as thick as a milk shake and are

a very refreshing and nutritious drink on a hot and dusty day.

They contain healthy protein for muscle support and blood sugar balance, healthy medium chain fat from the avocado and banana, high vitamin C from the kiwi and calcium from the yogurt. A smoothie is great to go out to the field with a sandwich or some pizza and a little sweet treat.

It was brought to my attention by one of my readers that I omitted the amount of gelatin in my No Bake Lemon Cheesecake recipe. Thank you for phoning me, to let me know. If you cut the recipe out to try, the amount of gelatin is 2 packages of Knox gelatin.

Local Author Helps Recount Alberta’s History Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Islay’s Allen Ronaghan says the atmosphere and interest in Alberta’s Métis history is changing.

Ronaghan said he has always had an interest in Canadian history and particularly in the area’s earliest residents, the native tribes, and how they interacted with the settlers as they made their way throughout the west.

Ronaghan was born and raised in the Islay area and in 1949 married his wife Shirley. Together they raised a family of three daughters May, Beth and Stella.

After spending a number of years teaching, also serving as Principal for

the Tofield School in Tofield, Alberta, Ronaghan returned to school, earning a Master’s Degree in Western Canadian History from the University of Saskatchewan and later a Doctorate in Western Canadian History from the University of Manitoba.

He began writing books in the early 1950’s and spent a lot of his time locating and documenting geographical landmarks the same way the local native tribes did in the area.

Ronaghan’s first book titled “We Are All One Nation” was published in 1959 and that was just the start of the author’s career. In total he has 14 books to his name and all have been acknowledged by both Saskatchewan

Vermilion Snoezelan Room Goes Public Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Vermilion Focus clients have been experiencing benefits of the Snoezelan room without making the one hour drive to St. Paul’s room.

A Snoezelan room is a controlled m u l ti s e n s o r y e nv i ro n m e n t ( M S E ) primarily used by people with autism or developmental disabilities but can also prove beneficial to people who simply struggle with everyday stresses. The room is designed to help stimulate various senses in a calming manner with

special colours, lighting, sounds and also has a number of relaxing textile items for visitors to touch, feel and smell all adding to the relaxing experience.

The room was set up about a year ago and Focus Adult Services Manager Heather Todd, said the room has primarily been used by clients of the organization but is open to the general public.

Focus clients were previously making costly trips to a Snoezelan room in St. Paul, paid for by each client. Todd said the hour long trip back from St. Paul was eliminating any benefits the clients were experiencing from that Snoezelan room.

She said they are hoping to add more

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month AHS Submitted

October is Breast Cancer awareness month and with the chances of one in every eight women being diagnosed with the disease, Alberta H ealth S er vices (AHS) s ays ea rly diagnosis is the key to the effective treatment of the disease through regular mammograms.

A ma m m o g ra m is a sp e cia lize d x-ray of the breast which can detect any abnormalities in the breast tissue.

It can detect cancer when it is very small, sometimes two to three years before your physician can feel it.

AHS s ays th e main risk fa c to rs for breast cancer are being female, although men can develop breast cancer too, being over the age of 50 years, having a family history of the disease, and being previously diagnosed with breast cancer.

According to AHS’s Breast Screening Life Plan there are a number of things women can do to aid in the diagnosis and prevention of breast c a n ce r. Wo m e n yo u n g e r th a n 4 0 years should per form regular self examinations on themselves and also see a doctor often for regular health exams.

For women between the ages of 40 to 49, AHS advised women to talk to their doctors about their individual risks of the disease and also the risks and benefits related to mammograms. Also schedule regular breast exams from a health care provider and seek advice should you notice

any unusual changes in your breasts.

AHS recommends women between the ages 50 to 69 also have a screening mammography performed at least every two years.

Beyond the age of 70 you should talk to yo ur h ealth c a re p rovid er about continuing mammograms.

The mobile screening units will be in the Vermilion area from Oct. 23 through 29 and appointments can be made by contacting Alberta Health Services.

Town Set To Invest In 2013 Pavement And Spray Patching Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Town of Vermilion will be investing $80,000 in pavement and crack filling within the town.

Discussion of awarding the programs to contractors was brief as quotes for the projects of Pavement Patching and Spray

Patching Programs for 2013 year were comparable to each other.

The patching project is projected to cost approximately $40,000 and funds are available through the Street and Sidewalk Maintenance Operations with approximately half of that coming from Infrastructure Reserves for patch work associated with water and sewer repairs.

The quote submitted by Mannville Paving Ltd. stated the company was available to complete the Pavement Patching Program and would do so at a rate of $450 per hour, the same hourly rate from the 2012 program.

The Spray Patching Program included miscellaneous patchwork as well as sections of cracked asphalt in the town.

A difference of nearly a dollar per linear meter helped Council make the decision to award the Spray Patching program to Carillion Canada Inc. at the same projected cost as the Pavement Patching Program awarded to Mannville Paving Ltd. The work is scheduled to be completed as soon as the pavement suppliers are mixing another batch.

No Objections For Town Bylaw Amendment Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Town of Vermilion Council held a public hearing on Sept. 17 at the Council Chambers for Bylaw 10-2013 which was a land use bylaw amendment for the SGDCSouth Gateway Direct Control District. The recommendation states the purpose of the amendment is to accommodate the development of a highway commercial subdivision.

The first reading of the bylaw was given at the August 20 regular council meeting. The public hearing was met with no

objections or concerns and Town Manager Dion Pollard said the Town Office has not received any calls of concern following advertisements in local papers.

Council moved on to hold the second and third reading of the bylaw amendment which was then passed by Council.

Council also moved to have the first reading of Bylaw 12-2013 Land Use Bylaw Amendment R6 Residential District.

This amendment is for the rezoning of Plan 0828273 which is located at 51 Street and 46 Avenue. The block currently has one 6-plex unit on the site. The owner of the property has a proposed develop-

ment plan for two 12-unit apartment buildings as well as a 6-plex complex, adding an additional 30 housing units to that Plan.

Council will be holding a public hearing in the future for anyone wanting to voice their concerns.

Rotary Student Adjusting To Cultural Changes Karen Nedzielski

David Moscoso said he has enjoyed exp eriencing the various cultural differences from his country of Bolivia.

The 16 year old began his journey approximately three weeks ago when he left his home town of Ururo to travel to Canada on a one year exchange program organized by the Rotary Club.

Moscoso said since he was a child he has always wanted to visit another country and when he first learned he was chosen for the Rotary trip, he assumed he would most likely visit the United States. When he was told he would be visiting Canada he was very excited about the trip.

Moscoso is the youngest child in his family and he has one brother and one sister, neither of which he said had the desire to participate in the program.

His town of Oruro is higher into the mountains of Bolivia with a cooler climate than here. He said the warmer Canadian climate was something he had to get use to, along with the school schedule.

In his school the year runs from February to November. The school day begins at 8 a.m. and finishes at 5:30

p.m. with a two hour lunch break. In Oruro, the larger meal of the day is lunch.

Students in Ururo study approximately 16 subjects per semester so Moscoso said the four subjects he is currently studying here is much easier.

M oscoso is p a r ticip atin g in va rious school activities including playing football with the Marauder’s Football team, which is a sport that is not played in his town. The most common sport is soccer but Moscoso’s favourite sport is tennis.

Moscoso said he he is enjoying his trip so far and has made frequent calls home so he is not homesick yet. He will be spending approximately week at each host home and after the one year mark, will make his journey home with what he says is an experience of a lifetime.

School News

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES has a school assembly every month. From Sept.-Dec., these will be held on the third Tuesday of each month at 10:45 and from Jan.-June, on the third Wednesday of the month at 10:45. Our first school assembly took place on Sept.

17. If you weren’t there, you missed out on an amazing flash mob by all our grade 6 students. They even had cool shirts that had been purchased from a store that sent some of their proceeds to the flood victims.

After the singing, Mrs. Webb talked about kindness, our Sept. virtue, and how each student is to write a kind thing they did on a paper strip and then we are going to make a paper chain around the school to wrap our school in kindness. Mrs. Bauer told us that our AR theme for the year is going to be the ocean and that, as a school, we need to obtain 12 000 points by the end of the year.

Mr. Bob Allen, superintendent of BTPS, ran an Effective Teaching Framework contest over the past two weeks for staff in all of BTPS. A number of staff completed their submissions by the September 11 deadline, and were all put in a draw. The winner of the draw was Mrs. McCullough.

Mayor Marriot Proclaims World Cerebral Palsy Day Karen Nedzielski Reporter

At the Sept. 17 Town of Vermilion Council meeting Mayor Bruce Marriot officially proclaimed Oct. 2, 2013 to be “World Cerebral Palsy Day” for the Town of Vermilion.

In the official proclamation Mayor Marriot said that Cerebral Palsy, a neuromotor disability, affec ts 3.3 people in every thousand.

Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a group of conditions affecting the body movement and muscle coordination.

In attendance for the official proclamation was Diane Bodurka and her 2 year old daughter Emily.

Emily has left hemiplegia cerebral palsy which affects the left side of her body resulting from a stroke she suffered at about 6 months of age.

Diane said Emily can walk, run and play like any other child, with the exception of a slight limp. Emily’s left hand was also affected by the condition.

Diane has participated in the Life W ith o u t Limit s Wa lk fo r Ce re b ra l Palsy in Edmonton and was happy to be a part of the official proclamation.

PARTIAL FIRE BAN IN EFFECT

A partial fire ban was implemented in the County of Vermilion River on September 9th, 2013. All previously issued fire permits are hereby cancelled. Only well supervised recreational and incinerator fires are allowed however we ask that residents be mindful of moisture and wind conditions and take great care to ensure fires are fully extinguished. The County Fire Chief urges farmers to be extra diligent when working in their fields - check equipment often when being heavily used and have reliable firefighting equipment on board all machinery. All residents should exercise caution when parking in or driving through high grass.

The minimum fine for a violation during the fire ban is a $500.

St. Jerome School’s hot lunch program began on Sept. 18 with pizza, Caesar salad and ice cream on the student’s menu. Lunchroom Coordinator Carla Protsch said this year students can enjoy the program three days a week instead of two days, as the program ran last year.

Students are able to purchase the meals Tuesday through Thursday and Protsch said this year the number of meals being served is up, with approximately 175 meals being served daily including the preschool students.

The meals are served by volunteers and on the first day of the program moms Carrie Krips and Shannon Shule, were serving up the tasty favourite.

St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

Early on the morni n g o f W e d n e s d a y, September 18th, thirty-one grade ten students boarded the bus to attend the Grade 10 Retreat at Camp Warwa, which is northwest of Edmonton. We arrived at the camp at 11:00 am met our councilors, Shamrock and Cascade, had a tour of the camp, moved into our bunkhouse and then headed to the open field for our first team game. Each group had to get their 15 members across the sea of Hot Chocolate on a limited number of Marshmallows.

After lunch the two groups participated in different activities. One group got to step out of their comfort zone and tackled a High Ropes Course and Zip line. All students challenged themselves conquering at least one element of the course. The second group were busy learning how to use a map and compass as they completed an Orienteering Course. After searching the woods the second group hit the water where they participated in Tandem Kayaking. It was a vey windy afternoon so the group was fairly water logged when they returned to shore. Before supper the students participated in a Faith Formation activity focusing on the obstacles that keep us from a relationship with God and His Son, and how we can come closer to God and Jesus and who can support us with that. After a terrific supper the two teams battled during a game of “Stones”.

The day ended with an enthusiastic Campfire of singing, action songs, and great fun.

The following morning the groups switched activities. The group kayaking had a beau-

tiful calm morning for their activity. The Retreat ended with a wonderful Hot Dog Roast in the beautiful sunshine. Thank you to Mr. Allan MacMillan for organizing this wonderful experience and driving the bus. Also thank you to Mr. Randy Martin and Mrs. Margaret McCormack for coming along as chaperons.

The St. Jerome’s Sr. Golf Teams participated at zones on Cold Lake on Monday, September 16th. Congratulations to our Sr. Girls, Adrienne Mackenzie, Morgan Wilson, Sydney Poliakiwski, and Kalista McIntyre who won the tournament bringing home the Banner. Congratulations to our Sr. Boys team, Kade Myshak, Dustin Hines, Brayden Nelson, and Noah Sanson who had a great tournament as well.

We have had a very busy week of volleyball at St. Jerome’s over the past two weeks. The SR. Boys had a very successful first tournament in Camrose. They fought had throughout the weekend losing to Tofield in the Consolation Finals. The Sr. Girls and JV Teams both participated in MegaVolley at J.R. Robson last weekend.

The Sr. Girls played some terrific volleyball making it all the way to the quarterfinals.

The JV team had a great tournament as well losing out in the quarterfinals on the Consolation Side.

On Tuesday, September 17th our Jr. High Girls Volleyball team hosted a sixteam mini-tournament. All three of the St. Jerome’s teams played extremely well. On Wednesday, September 18th, the grade seven and eight girl’s volleyball teams participated in a mini-tournament at J.R. Robson. These teams also had much success playing terrific volleyball all

This year’s supper will be held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Thursday, September 26th. Once again there will be two settings, 5:00 pm or 6:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the school office beginning Thursday, September 12th.

The Sr. High Student Council will also be hosting a “Show and Shine” in the parking lot of the Regional Centre the evening of the Fall Supper. Fall supper ticket purchasers will have the chance to vote on their favorite vehicle and student council will award the winner with a “Car Care Basket”. Polish up your vehicle and display it that evening. High School students will be given the opportunity to display their cars at the school as well during the day on September 26th. The “Most Popular” vehicle chosen by the high school students will win a $25 Co-op Gas Card.

We will be celebrating our first school mass with Father Roger on Friday, September 27 at 10:30 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church. We would like to invite our faith community to join us.

On Monday, September 30th we will celebrate St. Jerome’s Day. Students and staff are encouraged to dress in our school colors, red, white and black. The High

School Student Council will be organizing a Bar-b-que hot dog lunch for all students.

At 1:00 pm we will gather in the gym to welcome the grade four students into their houses of Cartier, Fraser, and Mackenzie.

We will also welcome all new students in grade 5-12 and all new staff members to St. Jerome’s as well.

The St. Jerome’s Parent Council is presenting: “Stage Fright – The THRILLusion Show! The performance is on October 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Alumni Theatre Lakeland College. Tickets are available to purchase at the school.

Mark you calendar for our Annual High School Awards Night, which will take place on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 pm. The Awards ceremony takes place in the school gym.

Mannville Expo Provides Info To Community Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Mannville-Minburn-Innisfree Family Community Support Services (MMI FCSS) held the Making The Most Of Life - Choose Well Community Expo on Sept.

17, at the Mannville School. A number of community clubs and organizations were on hand to offer information and take registrations.

Jannette Riedel, Director with MMI FCSS said its goal is to make sure to keep communities connected and engaged with activities and services in the area.

Riedel said that a similar event was held in 2011 at the Mannville Rec Centre to promote community wellness which was met with some interest and success.

“Depending on this year’s interest in the Expo we are hoping to make it a yearly event,” said Riedel.

She said the area has a lot of oil field

companies actively working in the area and it has drawn many workers and their families to Mannville so she felt incorporating them into the expo was a good thing.

The intent of hosting the event in partnership with the Mannville School this year was to include the various groups and organizations in the area. At the expo, organizations were given an opportunity to showcase their group’s work and take registrations for the coming year.

The Mannville/Vermilion Highland Dance group had a booth and dancer Mikaela Storch dressed in a traditional Highland dance costume, and gave visitors a demonstration of some of the dances the group performs.

Storch said the dance season started on Sept. 9 and meets each Monday at the Mannville School. Although the season has already started, the group is still taking registrations for the 2013-2014 season and usually has approximately 26 dancers

in the organization.

The group is instructed by Jamie McIldoon and holds dance tests every two years and periodically participates in some dance festivals.

The Mannville-Vermilion Highland dancers perform at their Robby Burns night which is scheduled for Jan. 25 at the Mannville Recreation Centre, and will also perform at its annual Spring Fling held at the end of April at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre.

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) booth had interactive learning tools to educate young and old about the affects of drug and alcohol use and how it impairs cognitive function. On display were Fatal Vision goggles which are designed to show the various stages of impairment after consuming drugs or alcohol.

Kelly Stetson is a School Based Prevention Councillor with AHS’s Drug and Mental Health and says she takes the goggles to

different schools where they can be a useful tool to get students interacting and talking about drug, alcohol and tobacco use.

The wellness section of the expo hosted an array of information including blood pressures, heart rates as well as massage and the importance of fitness.

Local Massage Therapist Amberlyn Myshaniuk was giving free five minute massages to show the benefits of including it in a regular routine of personal well being. Myshaniuk has been a Massage Therapist for 18 years and operates out her home north west of Mannville.

There were also a number of youth groups including 4-H and skating clubs as well as the Mannville Historical club and a few home based businesses offering wellness products and services. The event ran from 11:30 a.m. through to 8 p.m. to give everyone a chance to attend.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigewitch Submitted

Congratulations to the Sr. Girls Volleyball team who brought home a Consolation Bronze medal from the Vermilion MEGA Volleyball Tournament. Over three days the girls played a tiring ten games and played exceptionally well, winning some games and losing others. In the end the girls pulled through to bring home their first medal of the season. The next tournament scheduled for the team will be in Sedgewick on October 5th.

The team would also like to welcome assistant coach Kate Bilodeau. Bilodeau played Women’s Volleyball at the College and University level for five years recently bringing home the National Championship title with the University of Fraser Valley last year.

Our senior boys volleyball team will begin their competitive season on September 28th with a tournament in Kitscoty.

The junior high boys volleyball has started with practices Tuesday and Thursday after school. Mr. Richard Thompson is coaching the team with help from Mrs. Thompson. They have a few after school games set up and will be attending a tournament on October 18th at St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion.

The grade 6/7/8 girls volleyball team travelled to Vermilion for a “game night” September 18. They played 10 games in 3 hours! The girls did very well and learned a lot as only two of the eight had ever played before. Mrs. Konieczny saw an improvement in their play as the night went on. Their sportsmanship and positive attitude is to be commended also.

Our cross country team (Grade 4 – 12) are participating in the Vermilion’s Autumn Cross Country Running Challenge at the Provincial Park soccer fields on September 24th. This event is hosted

The BTJHAA Cross Country will once

again be held at our beautiful golf course on Thursday, September 26th starting at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. Thompson will be starting a Mannville School choir Wednesday, September 25. Students from grade 1 to 12 can join and learn to sing and perform. Students will practice over 2 noon hours each week. This is a new venture for Mannville School and a great way to involve students in artistic endeavors! The choir will sing for special school events such as assemblies and ceremonies.

Mrs. Tod’s kindergarten class will begin the year investigating sunflowers and how they grow and learn about transportation as they get used to the new routines a full day of kindergarten brings.

Mrs. Hinton, in the grade one class room reports the students have been learning lots about the upcoming season, fall and the colors we will see soon. Once they are done reviewing their

numbers, the grade 1’s will be talking about patterns in math. Spelling will be starting next week and home reading will be starting up shortly after that so watch for the home reading to be coming home soon!

The school year is on a roll for Mrs. Thompson’s grade 2 class. They are actively involved in learning about pat terns in math, temp erature in science, and three Canadian communities in social studies. Students have also tried all kinds of literacy activities in their Language Arts centers. The kids are very excited to use the RAZ kids reading program on the computer! The grade 2’s have had a terrific start to the year!

Kudos to the cooks who donated their time to help feed all the students at the Back To School Barbeque: Tara Tod, Lori Harder, Sherry Wowk, Dawn Kane, Alicia Rutt, Amy Jackson and Louise Storch.

Youth Classes Now Offered At Nor-Alta Jiu-Jitsu Nor-alta Jiu Jitsu Submitted

Now at Nor-Alta Jiu-Jitsu youth classes are being offered every Thursday night at the Lakeland College location here in Vermilion. Classes are for ages 10-13 and are being run from 6:00pm – 6:45pm. The classes are taught be Sensei Dave Woods, a 4th degree black belt in the art of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu with 20 years of law enforcement experience and training. The class will consist of learning the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu.

These fundamentals include, break falling, proper movement, blocking, kicking, and striking as well as personal protection tips to help keep them safe.

Classes are designed to help the student learn all their available options when found in a volatile situation and they will learn how physical force is out LAST option when all other avenues have been exhausted. These classes will help

develop the student’s ability to defend themselves against a variety of attacks, holds and will help make them think of different options they have when faced with the decision to defend themselves.

We aren’t about tournaments and sparring, we’re about teaching your child how to keep themselves safe by building their confidence and their self esteem and re-enforcing the rule that the best

way to win a fight is to not get into one in the first place.

The old adage, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” may not apply to the family run business in 2013. Family owned and operated businesses that have stood the test of time, or at least outlived 50% of small businesses that fold after the first 5 years have to stay current and relevant to today’s consumer. Respect for the legacy of CEO’s, fathers, mothers, grandparents, and the success they have had will pave way for the innovation of those to come and hopefully, if given the opportunity, those next leaders will continue on in the name of those before them as the next family business leader.

Venture Magazine highlighted The

Italian Centre in downtown Edmonton as one such company that faced major change as ownership passed from father to daughter in a patriarchal driven Italian society. As a business that began in 1959, the now owner Teresa Spinnelli, recognized that the family run grocery store her father had started was no longer a relevant competitor in 2000 having operated almost identically since its inception.

The reigns to a family run business come with a great deal more tied to them than a startup company when you factor in the community in which it resides, the familiarity among customers that it provides and the investment many other family members will continue to have in the business itself.

Lakeland’s Eggum And Weber Lead The Rustlers To Victory Aaron Kolodziejczak, Lakeland College Submitted

T h e L a kela n d Co ll e g e Wo m e n’s Rustlers Soccer team came out firing in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 14 against long-time rival the Olds College Broncos.

Leading the way for the Rustlers were Leesa Eggum from Saskatoon, and local girl Kailee Weber of Lloydminster who both netted hat tricks in the 7-0 win.

The Rustlers were able to apply pressure for the entire game which

led to numerous scoring chances.

After a breakaway goal by Eggum at the 20 minute mark, Lakeland did not show any mercy as they continued with their aggressive style of offence.

Many of the Rustler scoring opportunities came on fast breaks due to quick ball movement by the midfielders and the defensemen.

Brielle Wall of Lloydminster, scored her first goal of the season, while goalkeeper Ashly Griffin was solid in net with a shutout despite little pressure from Olds College.

St. Jerome School hosted a Senior Girls Invitational Volleyball tournament last weekend and the action going into the semi finals was intense. St. Jermone squared off against J.R.Robson in an very evenly matched game. The two teams volleyed back and forth for the longest time until St. Jerome pulled away taking the game in two sets, moving them on to the finals to face Paradise Valley. The teams were forced to play the full three sets, but in the end it was the home town team winning the tournament. Team Effort Rewards Marauders With 45-13 Victory Cathy Wolters Columnist

Vegreville scored first and last on Friday, b u t t h e Ve r m i l i o n Marauders put up 45 points in between for the team’s first victory of the 2013 season.

As head coach Ben Christians noted at the end of the game his team still had “lots of stuff to work on next week at practice”, but overall the Marauders provided a balanced offensive attack and solid defensive effort.

Offensively four different players scored touchdowns. Quarterback Corey Rowe scored two, as did rookie back Brayden Chilibeck. Respectively they rushed for 190 and 120 yards. Damian King and Avery Bielech each scored a major, King’s through the air and Bielech’s on the ground.

Bielech led the defense with 14 tackles; Jayden Kiechinger had 12, King 10 and Colton Katuski 7. Also chipping in with multiple stops were rookies Chilibeck with four and Ryley Bates and Scott Zielinski with three each.

Both teams were winless going into the game. Unlike the Marauders who had scored 54 points in their first two games, the Vortex were scoreless this season until near the end of the first quarter when Theodore Nawrot took the ball 62-yards to pay dirt.

The Marauders responded on their possession after the kickoff going 74 yards in five plays. Two big plays and Vortex penalties contributed to the touchdown drive. Dustin Steene took the ball into

Vegreville territory on a 12-yard pass and run. On the next play, an objectionable conduct and player ejection brought the ball to the Vortex 18. Chilibeck scored on a determined run and then launched himself over the goal line carrying a couple of Vortex with him. King’s convert tied the score.

On the next series, the Marauders pounced on a bad snap giving them a first down on the Veg 27. QB Rowe scrambled and was forced out to step out of bounds less than 2 yards from the goal line.

Defensive demon Bielech, in at full back, powered his way into the end zone for Vermilion’s second TD. King’s convert was low and the Marauder total stayed at 13.

Rowe’s kickoff was tipped by Vegreville’s Nolan Kobelsky into his own end zone. The Marauders, led by King, came in quick pursuit of the live ball forcing Kobelsky to fall on the ball for a safety and two more points for Vermilion.

After the kickoff the Marauders returned to offence but encountered a reset Vortex defense and had to punt on third and 10 on the Veg 38. Rowe delivered a coffin corner punt pinning the Vortex offense about a half yard from their goal line. On their first play, King burst into the backfield to bring down Chase Brunet for a second safety putting the Marauders up by 10 points, 17-7.

The Vortex attempted a short kick following the safety. Jarret Eyben fell on the ball along the sidelines giving the Marauder offense a first down on the Vortex side of midfield. Steene’s third reception brought the ball to Veg 29.

pitch for six yards to the Veg six. Katuski followed with another tough two yard gain, but the ball was brought back on a holding call putting the Marauders 2nd and 14.

King got behind the Vortex defenders and was all alone in the end zone for a TD reception, then added the convert for a 24-7 lead with less than two minutes left in the half.

The Marauders would score again before the half ended when the Vortex turned the ball over on downs on their own 20. With six seconds left in the second quarter, Chilibeck bulldozed his way into the end zone. King’s convert ended the half with the Marauders up 31-7.

The Marauders recovered two fumbles, but also gave up an interception in a third quarter full of miscues by both teams. The Marauders did score the only points. After taking over on downs at midfield, Chilibeck side stepped and flashed his way to the 28.

Rowe scored on a broken play. After looking to pass, he tucked and ran down the sidelines for a TD. He scored the same sort of TD on the first play of the final quarter, this time rambling 60 yards. King’s convert brought the score to 45.

With less than three minutes left Kolby Kaziechko, in his first game, prevented the speedy and shifty Nawrot from reaching the end zone. However, on the next play, Brunet scored from the 15. An attempted two-point convert went incomplete with Greg Perillat providing coverage.

Marauder extra points: Coaches’ defensive stars went to Bielech and rookie Bates, who added a forced fumble to his tackling stats. Offensive nods went to Chilibeck, and for the second straight game, rookie

FOR SALE Head Of Vermilion Regatta Returns To Provincial Park Reservoir Lakeland College Submitted

Lakeland College Rustler Crew only competes on its home water every three years so the team is understandably excited about hosting the Head of Vermilion regatta on Sept. 28.

“It’s nice to be able to compete on our own course. Our rowers know the course well which should work to our advantage,” says Peter Walsh, coach of the Rustler Crew.

The 19 rowers on the Rustler Crew have been practicing since late August.

They compete in their first regatta this weekend in Saskatoon. In October they’ll travel to Calgary for another regatta and then Burnaby, B.C., for the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship.

After winning gold in women’s novice 8 and men’s novice 8 at last year’s Western Canadian University Rowing Cham-

pionship, the Rustler crew is going through a rebuilding phase. However, Walsh believes the crew has the potential to place in many of this year’s regattas.

“We’ll compete in pairs, 4s and 8s events.

We have some very strong rowers and I think with more practice and race experience we’ll become a tough crew to race against.”

The Head of Vermilion regatta features a 3.5 km course on the Vermilion Provincial Park Reservoir. Competition starts at 10 am and 1 pm. Competitors don’t race in heats – there are staggered starts and times are used to determine final places. “People interested in watching should come down to the beach area of the Vermilion Provincial Park at about 10:30 am or 1:30 pm. Those are the times when the racers will start crossing the finish line,” explained Walsh.

The Head of Vermilion regatta is hosted by Lakeland College and the Lakeland Rowing Club.
