Tiger’s Roar Into 2013-2014 Season Karen Nedzielski Reporter The 2013-2014 Vermilion Tiger hockey season kicked off with the team’s Main Camp try-outs at the Stadium in Vermilion on Sept. 13. Coaches put the players through a weekend of rigorous drills and scrimmages.

Head Coach Durwin Selte said the participants were divided into two groups with the first group hitting the ice on 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening for drills and conditioning. Saturday saw the players engage in one-on-one and two-on-one action and finally participate in an inter-squad game on Sunday.

This is Coach Selte’s first year in the roll of head coach for the team, but he brings plenty of experience with him to the team, serving as assistant coach from 2006 to 2008 and also playing on the team for four years during his high school and college

He said the game of hockey has changed since he was a player with Alberta Hockey placing more emphasis on the essential hockey skills and less on the full-contact aspect of the game.

Coach Selte said out of the 43 players registered for the camp ranging from ages 17 to 21, the team will be narrowed down to 25 players for the season. The weekend will be followed by 3 exhibition games this week.

Dr. Tracy Edwards Appointed Next President Of Lakeland College Lakeland College Submitted Lakeland College Board of Governors today announced that Dr. Tracy Edwards will be the college’s next president and chief executive officer.

Dr. Edwards will begin her career with Lakelan d Colle g e o n Jan. 6, 2014. She will succeed President Glenn Charlesworth who announced last month that he will retire on Jan. 3, 2014.

“Dr. Edwards is a very astute leader with extensive experience working in post-secondary education in Canada and the United States. She served as the president and chief executive officer of Lethbridge College from 2005 to 2012 so she has a great understanding of Campus Alberta and the institutions and people within the provincial system,” says Milt Wakefield, chairman of the board of governors. “ I ’m excited to join Lakeland College,” says Dr. Edwards. “I have always admired the quality of the programming at Lakeland, strategically aligned with the needs of the college’s community. Crime Spree Ended With Help Of The Public Shortly after 8:30 am on Saturday September 7, 2013 Vegreville RCMP were notified of a break and enter to the Vegreville Ford dealership which ha d o ccu rre d th e p revio us nig ht.

Investigation revealed that a customer’s F350 truck had been stolen from the yard and had smashed through a fence to escape.

Later that morning RCMP began to get complaints of burglar alarms, damaged proper ty, break-ins and th ef t s i n th e r u ra l a re a n o r th of Mundare, Alberta. Residents of the area reported seeing a truck matching the description of the one stolen from the dealership driving erratically in the area. While making patrols in the vicinity police were able to locate the truck as described which wouldn’t stop when police tried to pull it over.

A brief chase ensued in which the truck drove through fields, bushes and fences in attempt to evade police. Residents of the area called in with sightings of the truck as it drove erratically away from police.

While helicopter and police service dog support were on its way police were contacted by one area resident who advised that he had witnessed the truck sp eed past him, recognized the truck as he knew the owner and was told earlier that it had been stolen. The citizen assisted in direct-

ing RCMP to a location where the truck had stopped, the driver had been seen taking property out of the truck and hiding it in a nearby farm yard near Andrew, Alberta.

The area wa s su r ro u n d e d a n d th e su s p e c t was arrested a short while later with the assistance of RCMP police dog ser vices. A sea rch of th e vehicle resulted in extensive damages to the exterior, but also property which had been stolen from at least 3 different rural residences was located inside.

Items recovered from inside the truck ranged from jewelr y, elec tronic s, tools to air rifles and cowboy hats all taken during thefts.

Cst Curtis HARSULLA of the Vegreville RCMP says, “Had it not been for the keen eye and quick thinking of the good Samaritan who recognized the truck and called police, apprehending the suspect would have been very difficult. It was clear that the suspect did not want to stop for police and was driving very dangerously to try and get away.”

Mother Nature’s Test Karen Nedzielski Editor

With har vest in full swing, many area farmers will be experiencing long days and even longer nights, all in an attempt to get the crops off before the first snowflake falls. And although many this year are seeing average to above average yields, there are always a few that say this is the last year despite what next year brings.

If one was to reflect on previous years factoring in the drought in the early 2000’s, followed by the effects of the cases of BSE, the past ten or so years have definitely proven the strength of cattle and grain farmers in Canada.

The many contributing factors of a successful year on the farm can stretch the patience of a producer, no matter what the crops may bring. The livelihood of the farm family depends on matters beyond their control.

The harsh beginning of each year can dwindle precious feed supplies only to be followed by spring storms which can weaken newborn calves and in some cases, claim their lives. But the cattle producer will drag that sick calf in to the barn on the

sled, with an angry cow following, in hopes of saving the calf from its demise.

The lack of spring rains deprive seeds of germination and then the winds come and sweep them away into the hollows and tree lines.

When the rains arrive they will wash the recently racked hay crops, leaving both sides of the swath blackened. But the farmer will still make his way out there to roll up what is left.

As for the swaths of green feed, it will sprout in the swath from all the untimely moisture and with any luck the geese won’t eat all of it.

As the summer ends, machines will race up and down the fields in a high speed waltz with Mother Nature’s ticking time clock. There will be one or two crops that don’t make it into the bin and will hopefully get picked up next spring. There is always the option of turning the cows in it for winter grazing.

As the cows with calves at foot come home from their summer pasture, there will be at least one animal missing. There goes a bit more off this fall’s calf cheque.

Winter made an early appearance so the feeding starts before it should have. The feed rationing begins a bit prematurely but it should last until spring.

When the cold winds blow in December the stock tanks freeze over. Out will come the propane torches to thaw the water line before the cows knock the float off and water runs everywhere creating the skating rink around the tanks.

No matter what the crisis is thrown at farmers, there will always be grumbling, stomping, occasional bad words and even

the threat of quitting. But the farmer seems to always find the strength to drag in that calf, seed that crop and bale that black hay. All in hopes of a better year next year.

This year it seems area farmers are getting a bit of a reprieve from the harsh reality of Mother Nature’s sometimes cruel test...at least for now.

Planned Firefighter Statue Fate Decided Karen Nedzielski Reporter

Approximately five years ago a group of local individuals started a campaign to have a firefighter statue erected in the Town with a projected cost of $120,000.

The statue was to acknowledge the work of th e Town’s fire trainin g school and was to be placed by the tourist information booth located at the intersection of 52 street and 47 avenue.

The project was being managed in par tnership with Lakeland College and the Town of Vermilion, both pledging their support to the project in the amount of $10,000 each. Additional fundraising efforts totalled $3,215. Approximately half of those funds were a result of donations made in the memory of Mr. Lloyd Seath, creating a major shortfall in funding the project.

Council also made a motion to donate the maquette to Lakeland College/Fire E.T.C. to display in their facility.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES Our Government continues to introduce tax relief measures to help support Canadian families in keeping more of their hard-earned money where it belongs – in their wallets. I am encouraging all of you to take advantage of the ones that apply to your family.

Some of these credits include: • The Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, which allows eligible Canadian families to claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount up to $500 for the cost of registering a child under 16 (or under 18 years of age if eligible for the disability amount) in eligible physical activity programs, such as soccer or hockey teams. For the 2011 tax year, over 1.5 million families took advantage of the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. To find out if your child’s program is eligible for this tax credit, please visit www.cra. gc.ca/fitness.

• The Children’s Arts Tax Credit, which allows eligible Canadian families to claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount up to $500 for the cost of registering a child under 16

TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR HOME HEALTHY AND SAFE:

BEWARE OF US BUILT MOBILE HOMES THAT DO NOT MEET CANADIAN STANDARDS. PART 1 This week’s topic is about the dangers of buying an out of country mobile home.

I have come across two brand new trailers that were built in the U.S. that did not meet the national building code. If you are a regular follower of my thoughts you will know I try to steer away from talking about codes. I am not a codes officer and do not try to mimic the important work they do. Having said that I want to bring this important issue to your attention in the hopes that I can prevent you from making the same mistake two of my past clients have made.

The issue surrounds the need for a home to have vapor barrier. In our climate the interior and outside temperature can vary as much as 60 or more degrees Celsius.

With such a wide range in temperature across a wall or ceiling there is a strong possibility that frost will build up. We see it quite often on our windows in winter.

The accumulation of frost is caused by moist air coming in contact with cold air.

The key to preventing this is to place a layer of vapor barrier on the warm side of the insulation to prevent the moisture from entering the wall where it can make the contact.

Students Fall Like Dominoes

Lakeland College students were literally falling like dominoes during the annual Mattress Dominoes held at the College on Sept. 10.

Sandwiched between dorm room mattresses, students lined up into three rows as they waited for the first mattress to start the domino effect. Last year’s event had approximately 85 students participate. This year, the mattresses lined up totalled more than 200.

Even in my most rash mood, would I ever, ever give Mom the idea I was “Bored”, or needed something to do!! My Mom was most creative in thinking up what needed done and she’d keep you at it come “Hell or High Water”. She had definite ideas about work ethics that would make a drill sergeant in a recruit station look like a meek kitten. She meant to keep you busy and out of trouble. We had a wind break around the nor th, east, and south of our house yard. Dad would run a little eight foot horse disc between the rows of trees and it required the use of a hoe to chop off the weeds in the strip between the little trees. There seemed like endless rows of trees and I can remember the hoe seemed to weigh like about a ton after a spell!!

Man, those tedious jobs were some hard to endure on a hot sunny day

when there were so many other interesting things we’d sooner have been doing. When I left that country those trees that were knee high when I hoed them as a boy, had grown to beautiful spruce about forty feet high. Made me feel good that Mom had the stuff and character to see what they’d be with that care to keep the weeds hoed.

In my childhood times our garden wa s m o re th a n a h o b by, i t wa s a primary source of food and in summer we ate it fresh from the garden. Much of the produce was canned, dried an d in th e case of cab ba ge ma de into sauerkraut. That meant that the garden had to be carefully tended and was a constant chore to keep the weeds under control. Those rows seemed to stretch like three times to the moon and back. Remember?

Hard to imagine a longer day!! In this modern age with all the electronic games and smart phones to play with, T.V.’s with mega channels, satellite dishes, you’d wonder how in the world our youngsters could be “BORED”. I can so rememb er the home made

toys brother and I made, and the long sojourns we took down in the coulee that was so wild in those times. We all shared the use of just one bike in those days, so divided between five of us, it was kept well used. I can’t imagine that circumstance nowadays.

Everyone needs their own.

T h e re we re s o m a ny c h o re s i n those days that were eliminated with the advent of p ower, like packing in the water and wood. Power also made possible nice flushing toilets and forever took away that wonderful character building job of emptying the thunder mugs from under the bed. There was no way out of getting your turn at that. There really aren’t any really arduous character building jobs left accept doing homework from school and somehow that was mostly missing in my early school times. We had enough problems just getting to and from school as it was.

All the hardships we conquered as children, I think did help bring into focus a work ethic that seems to be missing in these easier living times,

C h o c o l a t e zucchini cake is very moist and delicious.

It is always a fall favorite with fresh zucchini in season.

This recipe is based on one that I got from my friend Betty. I remember the first time I tasted a chocolate zucchini cake, and what a surprise it was to have a cake that had such a rich texture.

The fat in the cake is minimal, and is from healthy olive oil which has beneficial nutrients. You could also use canola oil for all or part of the fat.

A lot of recipes for zucchini cake use a whopping cup and a half of oil and 2 cups of sugar, but this leaves the cake very sweet with an unhealthy sugar and fat load for our bodies. This is the way a lot of the old baking recipes are.

I have done this recipe with as little as 7/8 cup of sugar and it is fine, but for those that like their cake a little sweeter the 1 and a quarter cups of sugar will suit you better, and provides lots of sweetness especially if you use an icing with the cake.

Something new in the sugar department is coconut sugar. You buy it at health food stores or Nutters. The main benefit of coconut sugar as reported on the Dr. Oz show is that coconut sugar, unlike white sugar does not lead to fluctuating blood sugar levels. Coconut sugar is not white, but rather more like brown sugar with a wonderful caramel flavor. It is really nice with oatmeal.

I use white unbleached flour fo r th i s c a ke, b u t you could exp eriment with using part whole wheat or whole barley flour.

Wh e n yo u g rate the zucchini, leave the p eel on if you are using young zucchini. If the zucchini are older with a tougher skin

then peel the skin away before grating.

The refreshing taste of grated zucchini has got me thinking that I need to start working on a zucchini salad recipe now that this chocolate zucchini cake is perfected.

You can ice it with chocolate icing, or a chocolate cream cheese icing.

A regular cream cheese icing would be great as well. If you want a more modern, healthy icing you can blend avocadoes with cocoa powder and sweeten to taste with stevia. It is a creamy chocolate pudding icing that is actually healthy.

Chocolate Zucchini Cake 1 / 2 cup olive oil 1 1 / 4 cups sugar 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup water 1 teaspoon instant coffee 2 cups flour 1 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 / 2 teaspoon salt 2 – 3 cups grated zucchini Beat together the olive oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla together. Add the cup of water and the coffee. You can also use 1 cup of coffee instead of the water and instant coffee. In a separate bowl add all the dry ingredients and mix well. Add the dry ingredients to the liquid. I use a held mixer for all of it except the zucchini which I stir in at the end. Bake in a lightly greased 9

at least in the minds of us old timers who see the way things are done in these times. I pitched bundles and tried to do an adult man’s work when I was just thirteen years old. I was kept home from school at har vest time to run our little Ford tractor on the binder at only eight. So I guess the work ethic was instilled at an early age. I remember brother and I killing a beef and building a tripod to hang it on and skinning it out to finish the project. We had seen it done and just did the complete deal. Brother and I used to haul grain in our mid teens so we could drive our 1950 one ton to Borradaile and back. Shoveling the grain by hand was worth it because it gave us the opportunity to drive. I think we were really lucky and it never really dawned on us that we were hard done by. We felt important to be useful and needed. We just never let Mom know we were bored or without something to do.

We set up an email address to exchange correspondence with friends and relatives. It works like a hot damn, instant letters appear onscreen seconds after having been composed. And then one day we start receiving messages from Helga who says that she ‘wish to know you better sometime maybe turn husband,’ or from Joe Nobody, the supposed CEO of our banking institution, citing that ‘we seem to have lost some of your data and need to verify your account number and PIN’. Spam, spam, a good thing becomes an aggravation and we are forced to delete ourselves and begin again.

We use our smartphones to store personal information, addresses and phone numbers of our friends and relatives, photographs, confidential details about our lives, sometimes our financial data. And then we lose our backpack and along with it our precious device. Maybe before we think to suspend service, we find out that we’ve been hacked. The debit card PIN that we could never seem to remember? Found by Mr. Techno-

savvy Ripoff guy in the little folder we secreted it inside. Bank account drained.

ID dumped in a trash can half-way across the Province. It’s all been used up and we’re left with the painful task of restoring order to our mess of a life.

We need technology. Some of us rely on it more or less, but it’s a part of who we are now, the good, the bad, and the ugly of it all included. We need to educate ourselves so that we better understand both the power and the danger inherent in our usage. Technology is serious stuff. It can help us experience things our ancestors couldn’t have imagined. It can also leave us naked and vulnerable, robbed of valuables we cannot afford to lose.

Each of us has a unique set of fingerprints. A scan of our irises leaves no doubt as to our identity. Dental records reveal an ivory arrangement unlike any other. And medical practitioners have confirmed that our heart rate bears a personal signature rhythm that is both recognizable and capturable through the use of an electrocardiogram (ECG), the device used to map the five peaks and troughs (PQRST) present in any individual’s heartrate.

Toronto Engineering graduates, recently introduced the ‘Nymi’, the world’s first wearable device that utilizes a user’s heartrate to unlock personal identity and, through Bluetooth technology, control personal devices. The Nymi functions as a three-factor security system. It requires a personalized Nymi (wristband), the user’s unique heartbeat, and a smartphone or similar device that has been registered to use the specially designed application that complements the Nymi. In appearance, the Nymi is a simple wristband that looks similar to fitness trackers such as the popular Fitbit currently on the market. It’s designed to be visible but simple and relatively inconspicuous. The wristband uses a cryptographic chip, which means that all data is encrypted at the hardware level. The data remains untraceable to the user, so long as the default setting is not altered.

All transmission ends when the user removes the wristband. Its designers claim that the Nym is far more secure than any password, PIN, key, or card currently in use. Further, it’s virtually spoof-proof. In other words, no one but the user can activate the Nymi. There’s no faking someone else’s heartrate. If the claims are accurate, the launch of the

Nymi may return some of the personal power lost to the technology user and definitely make it a lot more challenging for ID poachers and PIN hackers to break through the privacy barrier between us and the data stored in our devices.

The Nymi won’t be available until sometime in 2014, but its developers seem confident about the product and they have ambitious plans for its applicability far into the future. For believers of the yet unseen, pre-orders are possible. The price is $79.00 Canadian.

Personal privacy remains a concern for many in these days of global interaction, social media, and digital communication. Most of us desire and require more control over all things involving our identity and protecting our privacy.

Health care is important to Albertans, it affects all of us and that is why the government has made health care one of its top priorities.

While our province spends more than any other on health care and has some of the best results, there is always room for improvement. That is why we are constantly looking at how our system is run and examining options for how we can

do better.

A few months ago, Health Minister Fred Horne ordered an examination of Alberta Health Services (AHS) to see how that organization could better communicate with our communities and serve our frontline health care workers.

The Minister was concerned with some of the issues that had been raised with regards to AHS management, including those related to the recent home care RFP process, consultation on rural ambulance services, and food services for seniors in continuing care.

As a result of that review, the senior

management level of the AHS structure is being immediately streamlined to better support health-care providers. This includes moving from approximately 80 senior executives to 10, with the majority of those positions being reprofiled to support front-line staff as well as the elimination of five positions.

Following this change, there will be a further management review in consultation with front-line workers to ensure the main focus of the organization is, and continues to be, health care service to Albertans.

Patient care is and must be our top

priority.

Our government has full confidence in its front-line health care workers – our doctors, nurses and health professionals across Alberta who provide among the best care anywhere in Canada. These front-line health professionals will have a voice in developing the details of how this new, simpler structure will be implemented.

We will continue to drive change in the health system with a strong focus on better access to health care closer to home.

“Why Not?” Insurance Meagan S.Balaneski Columnist

There are good and bad kinds of “why not?” insurance. The bad kinds are ones you’ll likely never use, often purchased over the phone. Here are some different types of “why not?” insurance.

Credit Unemployment Insurance. I called in last week to activate a card. While I’m on the phone, I’m offered balance insurance for if I lose my job. And it costs just $0.99 for every $100 of card balance.

The first red flag was that they didn’t ask what I do. I could be self-employed with a thriving business, or my boss could have just given me my final warning. Second, they didn’t ask about me. I have a spinal

injury and have been declined for underwritten disability insurance. They don’t know that because they didn’t ask. Thirdly, the unemployment rate is only 3.2%. So why not buy the coverage? Because the chance of claim is so small, and the financial impact of needing to claim is even less.

Special Situation Coverage. Coverage can very greatly, such as a leg break on a child, or a day in the hospital with a cancer diagnosis. So why not? Again, because the chances of claim are small. Not that many kids break their legs, and not that many cancer patients spend their days in the hospital. As well, the financial impact of needing to claim is small. The policies are designed that way, with a monetary cap for each situation.

Other types of “why-not?” insur-

ance can make a lot of sense.

Costs less than a fast food burger. Using a quick market survey, a $100,000 term 10 life insurance policy on a healthy nonsmoking male under age 35 (or female under age 40) is less than $10 per month.

The chance of claim is very low, however the financial impact can be devastating.

So why not?

Private Health Services Plan (PHSP).

Another is a PHSP for business owners.

The company pays an administration fee on medical expenses and codes them as a tax deduction. The insurance benefit goes to the individual claimant directly, around CPP contributions and personal income tax for a savings of up to 50%. The frequency of claim is high, and having a plan actually saves money. So why not?

Awareness Of Post Partum Depression Gwen Randall-Young Submitted

The birth of a new baby is a joyous event, but for some mothers the joy is eclipsed by their experience with “baby blues” or “postpartum depression”. Although the cause of all such experiences is not completely clear, it is likely that both stress and hormonal changes play a role.

Birth is an emotionally charged experience, and the intensive care required by a newborn can be overwhelming, especially for first time moms. In addition, high levels of female sex hormones which circulate in the blood of the expectant mother drop drastically within hours of delivery. Increased levels of endorphins which existed during pregnancy also drop abruptly after delivery. These hormonal changes can contribute to biochemical depression.

‘Baby blues’, common in the first few days after delivery, are a milder form of postpartum reaction, and may include crying, irritability, and anxiety. Symptoms usually disappear in a few days. ‘Postpartum depression lasts longer, and may occur immediately after delivery, or up to a year later. Symptoms may include nervousness and anxiety, exhaustion, sadness, hopelessness, appetite or sleep disturbances, poor concentration and memory, overconcern for baby, lack of interest in baby, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and fear of harming self or baby. One in ten mothers experiences some degree of postpartum reaction.

A more severe disturbance is postpartum psychosis, but it is quite rare, affecting only one woman in one thousand. Symptoms are exaggerated, including insomnia, hallucinations, agitation, bizarre feelings and behavior. This condition is an emergency, and requires immediate medical attention.

There are many things a woman can do if she suffers from the more general form of postpartum depression, beginning with a discussion with her doctor. Medication and/or therapy can be helpful, but some-

Weapons Training In Kuk Sool Won TM Kuk Sool Won Submitted Weapons play a vital role in all ancient martial arts. Military weapons were the most prominent and extensively developed weapons’ techniques in ancient times. Why? Because they were they most common and practical fighting implements available. High among the Korean worriers’ favourites was the sword ‘Gum’.

Unlike Japan or China, where sword blades followed a set pattern, according to their particular use, Korean blades were designed according to individual preference. Some warriors even forged their own, believing that the best swords were those that were custom made, fitting each person’s height and strength requirements. Unlike other martial arts where the size and shape of the sword determines the sword technique, “Kuk Sool” techniques determine the swords dimensions.

For example, Jung Gum describes straight sword principles. This does not designate the type of sword but means that Jung Gum techniques are mostly linear

in actions. The other main sword principle is Yuk Gum (inverted). This is where the swords cutting edge faces upwards.

These are often defensive actions, inspired by close range fighting conditions. While Japanese swords were primarily two handed weapons, and Chinese were single handed, Kuk Sool sword techniques combine both single and double handed actions. There are also techniques for twin swords, both long and short swords.

Kuk Sool bong or staff techniques reflect the influence of all three kingdoms, Buddhist, Royal Court and Tribal or Family martial arts. Staff techniques are broken down into three categories; dahn bong (Short staff), Joong bong (middle staff), and jang bong (long staff). In ancient times Korean bongs were made out of a special wood called Pak dahl. Since pak dahl is not available in the Western world rattan is the wood of preference, as it is flexible and will not break as easily as hardwood.

The jang bong (long staff) is primarily used as a single ended weapon as it is gripped closer to one end. They were popular with those martial artists that

wanted to extend their reach.

The Joong bong (middle staff) is the most commonly seen Kuk Sool staff.

Lengthwise the staff is usually measured to the height of their user. Circular and spinning techniques are seen with this staff. There are four basic techniques in Kuk Sool’s staff training: upward strikes, straight pokes, circular techniques and ground retrieval techniques. The ground retrieval techniques include some of the acrobatic actions such as shoulder rolls and cartwheels.

The dahn bongs (short staff) were weapons that could be easily concealed in sleeves or belts and pulled out for surprise attacks. They have a penetrating force, directed for pressure point striking, making them an advanced weapon. Since each pressure point has a small surface area, and requires an accurate direct hit, large swinging motions are ineffective.

This pinpoint accuracy is why dang bong expertise is limited to advanced martial artists.

There are 24 traditional Korean Royal Court Weapons in the Kuk Sool WonTM syllabus, including the spear, cane, rope, fan, bow and arrow. The most two commonly seen are the Sword: short &

long, single or double, straight or inverted, and the staff: short, middle & long, single or double.

PSBN Morgan introduces the Jewel bong or rope staff (Nunchuka in Japanese) at Blue belt helping prepare students for the staff and sword at Dan Bo Nim level (black/brown belt). The Jewel Bong is an interesting but challenging weapon to learn due to the circular motion needed for each strike, and the slightest error in technique can result in a bang to the head!

Vermilion Outreach School hosted a Welcome Back BBQ on Sept. 12. The weather was excellent for students, staff, parents, and community members to meet each other and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers.

Eastalta Coop very kindly donated the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and juice.

Craig and Christine from Tim Horton’s donated coffee and donuts for the evening part of the event. Special thanks to Tammy Younker who helped us organize and donate some ice creams and treats.

Larry Wasylik and Jim Brady, trustees from ECACSSRD#16, helped with cooking the feast. Bernie Huedepohl, trustee from Buffalo Trail Public Schools attended and helped cook the food. Vermilion Outreach School is a partnership between the two local school boards. It is also important to

thank the Knights of Columbus of Vermilion who allowed us to use their barbeque.

Vermilion Outreach School receives excellent support from many agencies in the Vermilion area. The VIBE team made their appearance. Vermilion Outreach continuing to work with VIBE this year to help our students help others in our community. With the help of VIBE the students are learning wonderful skills and have become mentors. We visit the lodge, help with the VES hot lunch program as well as Santa’s Anonymous. It was also great to have other guest drop in from the Credit Union, FOCUS, Eastalta Coop, CLASS and the Town of Vermilion. It is wonderful to see such support.

The year is beginning really well for the school. We have a great group of students who are all working on their academics whether it is to graduate or upgrade for post-secondary studies. We also have several new students coming to begin high school. We have two full time teach-

ers and two educational assistants as well as two part time teachers on staff. Our art program continues to be a lively time at VOS as the students create wonderful sketches and paintings with music in the background.

It was encouraging to hear from several people at the open house that they appreciate the school and the unique service we provide. The purpose of Vermilion Outreach is to help students succeed by creating an environment of hope, building independence, generosity and mastery.

We give students a chance to complete high school in an adult-like environment, flexible schedule, access to one-on-one help, and with career and personal coun-

Other popular choices are Aboriginal Studies, psychology, legal studies, work experience, and forensics. We are looking forward to new courses in photography and media design. VCC Pet Show A Hit With Residents Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The residents of the Vermilion Continuing Care (VCC) facility were treated to an evening Pet Show on Sept. 11 in the facility’s garden area.

VCC visitors brought their pets to show off and some residents got a chance to get up close and personal with the various animals. Visitor Angie Venancy, brought her ten month old German Shepard puppy,

Nakia, in for the show.

Venancy’s mother Leona Brown, is a resident of VCC so she was happy to make the trip from Streamstown, Alberta for the event.

VCC resident Fran Polishuk made friends with pet rabbit “Luke”. The little brown rabbit was one of two furry friends brought in by Yvett Ouellette of Vermilion.

Pets in attendance were all awarded prizes hand made by the residents and treats and beverages were served following the pet show.

J.R. Robson School held an open house barbeque on Sept. 11 for parents and community members to meet the staff and tour the school. Upon entering the school visitors were met with interesting displays of carpentry and art work in the foyer.

In attendance were some new faces in the school’s teaching staff as seven new teachers joined the team of J.R. Robson educators.

A familiar face to some is Mr. Mike Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt grew up in the Vermilion area and was a graduate of St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion. He and his wife Jill (nee Betz) are newly married and he says it is important to stay involved in the community.

Mr. Schmidt has been teaching for three years and is the Grade 7 to 9 Science teacher and also coaches the Senior Girls basketball at J.R. Robson.

Mr. Lee Woodward is originally from Medicine Hat and has been teaching for ten years. Mr. Woodward said he has always enjoyed skiing and has made several trips to Whitefish, Montana to enjoy the sport.

Mr. Woodward will serve as the Grades 7 to 12 Physical Education and Health teacher and will also coach senior boys basketball.

Miss Lisa Belanger comes to the Vermilion area from Toronto via Hillmond, Saskatchewan, where she taught for two years at her first teaching assignment.

Miss Belanger is an accomplished painter and sculptor and her passion for art and teaching is very apparent from the first few minutes of meeting her.

After making the career change decision at 35 years of age, she said it was a way of combining the Arts and teaching. She will be teaching Art to the Grade 7 to 12 students.

Miss MyVahna Ishaq grew up in St. Albert and has been teaching since 2007 in Calgary, Edmonton and within Sturgeon County. Her time will be split with Vermilion Elementary School (VES), teaching Grade 8 Social and Senior High French at J.R. Robson and French at VES. Miss Ishaq grew up participating in dancing and later enjoyed teaching the art form to students. She is also working on creating an Improv acting club for

the students of J.R Robson with hopes of having the group attend the WildFire improv festival held in Edmonton each year.

Mrs. Kristy Kaye grew up in Sherwood Park and she and her husband David, were married this summer and now reside in Wainwright.

Mrs. Kaye said she enjoys running and has participated in a number of races including the Vancouver Marathon. She enjoys the outdoors, animals and farm life.

She will be teaching Language Arts and Social to the Grade 7 students and will also be teaching the Special Education class at J.R. Robson.

Mrs. Kelly Scully is another familiar face to Vermilion. This J.R. Robson graduate has taught in the school division for eleven years, eight of which were spent at Mannville School.

Her husband Danny, is the Shop Foreman at College Park and they have two children. Their daughter Jayden, is in Grade 4 and their son Ethan, just started Kindergarten.

Mrs. Scully has been on the opposite side of many student’s first day of school but she said this year was a little different when she watched Ethan board the bus for the first time.

Success Ahead! Why Small Business Is Important Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce Submitted

The significance of Small Businesses to our province and specifically, to our community is evident in the business that consumers find themselves doing daily. In Vermilion alone there are 143 businesses registered with The Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce. Vermilion Small Businesses fall under all sectors of industry and provide employment to many of our residents.

The definition of a Small Business is often defined in one of three ways; by the

value of its annual sales or shipments, its annual gross or net revenue, the size of its assets or the number of its employees. In some instances, Industry Canada has used a definition based on the number of employees, which varies according to the sector. They label businesses as; 1 to 4 employees: Micro-enterprise, 5 to 100: Small business, 101 to 499: Mediumsized business, 500-plus: Large business.

(Small Business Statistics - 2012) The Small Business Branch of Industry Canada published their semi-annual Key Small Business Statistics in July 2012. At that time there were over 1 million small businesses in Canada. They excluded any business where there were only the selfemployed entrepreneur. Out of those businesses, they found that 98 percent have fewer than 100 employees. In terms of self-employed business owners, the Key Small Business Statistics reported that there were 2.67 million self-employed workers in Canada in 2011.

When it comes to the financial stability of these small businesses in Canada and their contribution to our GDP (Gross Domestic Product), they account for just over 30 percent of the GDP nationwide.

Small businesses continue to grow and contribute to the economy of our nation.

Between 2002 and 2008, about 100,000 new small businesses, on average, were created in Canada each year (Key Small Business Statistics). In that same regard, there are businesses who exit the marketplace each year. In 2006 the number of businesses that exited was greater that that of businesses who entered. On average however, between 2002-2008 there were more small businesses created that the number of businesses exiting. Good news for the small business owner.

In looking at the sector breakdown of industry in Canada; non-institutional health care, forestry, other services, construction, and accommodation and food, around 21 percent of small busi-

nesses operate in the goods-producing industries while the remainder (79 percent) operate in service industries.

Small Business Week is a national celebration of Canadian entrepreneurs and their contribution to Canada’s economy.

Across Canada workshops, conferences and other such events bring together entrepreneurs and prospective entrepreneurs during this week with the goal of networking, educating and giving peers the opportunity to socialize and idea share with one another in the spirit of Small Business.

This year Small Business Week is held October 14 - 18 with the theme Success Ahead! up to Small Business Week, The Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce will provide information on Small Business practice, success and strategies through informative articles.

Local author Kimberly Oldenburg (Aumuller) was at the Vermilion Library on Sept. 14 for a signing session for her book “Dragon’s Hope - Tale Of The Guardian”.

O l d e n b u rg g rew u p in the Leduc area and moved to Vermilion in 2008 after marrying her husband Logan, who is from Vermilion. The couple has a two year old daughter and is currently expecting their second child.

She said her book, which she began writing at the age of twelve, is geared toward boys and girls ages nine to twelve.

“The protagonist of the s to r y is a girl so it may appeal more to girls than boys,” said Oldenburg.

She said her book “ D ragon’s Hop e: Tale of the Guardians” is about a world called Atha, where a thirteen year old servant girl named Britayn accid e n t a l l y d i s cove r s t h a t she has the gift of magic.

While Britayn struggles to hide her new powers from her people it is not long before magic gets her into trouble and her secret is Phtoto Stuart Pauls. revealed. Narrowly escaping

death, she is rescued by a dragon and taken to the Dragon Caverns where rogue magic users and dragons are hiding from a world that fears them.

Oldenburg says she hopes her book is the first in a series of five or six books. The second and third books of the series are completed and she is hopeful that they will be published within a couple of years.

keeping our bodies healthy. Classrooms will be taking a “toonie” collection for donations to the Terry Fox Foundation. There is also an online option for larger donations on the terryfox.org website. Parents are welcome to join us on that morning to “run for Terry”.

School board elections are coming up on Oct. 21. Voters will have an opportunity to decide who will lead our local school system for the next four years. Please think about who you would like to elect to your school board.

Perhaps you might think about running for school board yourself. As a school trustee, you are part of the school board that decides how education is delivered locally. The school board’s policies and the decisions it makes have a huge impact.

BTPS oversees an annual budget of approximately 60 million dollars, employs over 600 full and part time teachers and support staff, and has 27 school sites where approximately 4400 students attend. There are nine trustees, each representing a ward in our division. Currently, there are two vacant seats on the Board. If you are interested in public education, think about running for school trustee, as this will make a difference for our community’s children and our community.

We wo u l d l i ke to invite everyone out to our Annual St. Jerome’s Fall Supper. This year’s supper will be held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Thursday, September 26th. Once again there will be two settings, 5:00 pm or 6:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the school office beginning Thursday, September 12th. Thank you to the Mrs. McCormack’s Grade five students for coloring and hanging up posters around town advertising the Fall Supper.

The Sr. High Student Council will also be hosting a “Show and Shine” in the parking lot of the Regional Centre the evening of the Fall Supper. Fall supper ticket purchasers will have the chance to vote on their favorite vehicle and student council will award the winner with a “Car Care Basket”. Polish up your vehicle and display it that evening. High School students will

be given the opportunity to display their cars at the school as well during the day on September 26th. The “Most Popular” vehicle chosen by the high school students will win a $25 Co-op Gas Card.

We will be celebrating our first school mass with Father Roger on Friday, September 27 at 10:30 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church. We would like to invite our faith community to join us.

On Monday, September 30th we will celebrate St. Jerome’s Day. Students and staff are encouraged to dress in our school colors, red, white and black. The High School Student Council will be organizing a Bar-b-que hot dog lunch for all students.

At 1:00 pm we will gather in the gym to welcome the grade four students into their houses of Cartier, Fraser, and Mackenzie.

We will also welcome all new students in grade 5-12 and all new staff members to St. Jerome’s as well.

The Ladies took to the course in the annual Ladies Cash Scramble held at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 7.

There were numerous golfers vying for the top prizes but it was the team of Marg

Hatch, Caroline Sweeney, Lorraine Polishuk and Kenzie Smith taking first place in the A Flight. Jennifer Cartoreille, Tamara Cardnial, Sharon Buffalo and Pauline John claimed the A Flight second place.

In the B Flight it was Tracy EgerZaharko, Chris MacMillan, Terry Davidson and Collette Lefebvre taking first and Doreen Hope, Lucille Fairlly, Sylvia Moir and Adell Robb settling for second.

Mark you calendar for our Annual High School Awards Night, which will take place on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 pm. The Awards ceremony takes place in the school gym.

It was “Picture Day” on Thursday, September 12 and everyone looked fabulous. A special thanks to Mrs. Diane Sanson and Mrs. Shelly Corbiere for helping to keep everyone organized and pictures running smoothly throughout the day.

Thank you to all the people who have dropped off donations for our “Food for the Hungry” Program. Your generosity will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the students at St. Jerome’s.

Our volleyball teams had a great start to the season. The Sr. Girls had a full day

of Volleyball in Marwayne on Saturday, September 7 and battled hard to bring home Silver. The Jr. High Girls won Bronze at the Bishop Lloyd Tournament and the Jr. High Boys gained valuable experience developing as a team at the Bishop Lloyd tournament. Our Sr. Girls team participated in Mega Volley this past weekend and our Sr. Boys were in Camrose.

The Sr. Girls Spartans Volleyball team will be hosting their home tournament starting at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 20. The girls are hosting 16 teams and you are sure to see some fabulous volleyball. Come out and cheer on the Sr. Girls to victory.

The MHL (Monster Hockey League) is the plan, and all kindergar ten to G rade six students will be put on a special team (NHL team logos) and get to participate in activities this year.

Minor Hockey Will Initiate The Tier System Karen Nedzielski Reporter

To Tier or not to tier, that was the big debate at the annual general meeting of the Vermilion Minor Hockey Association held on Sept. 12 at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

That very question was posed by one of the hockey parents that most other leagues in surrounding areas arrange the players on a tier system based on ability, which some parents feel better challenges each player. With a single tier system, some parents feel the players that excel are sometimes not challenged enough by playing in the single tier

league. The same was said for the players that seem to struggle with hockey skills as they sometimes get left behind in developing skills.

The other problem with a single tier system is that some Vermilion teams were travelling long distances for games.

In a multi tier system, some division games could potentially be scheduled as close as Lloydminster, Mannville and Wainwright.

Although some of the divisions within the Vermilion Minor Hockey Association do operate in a multi tier system, there are some that do not. The number of players in those divisions do not allow for them to split into teams.

consensus was the organization would move to a tier system in hopes of alleviating the travel times and help to challenge the players.

A note brought forward from the Spring meeting was the Zone 2 disciplinarian was concerned with the number of coach suspensions in the zone was double in comparison to other zones.

In the notes from the April 18 meeting the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League (NEAHL) may be requiring repeat offenders to take an anger management course.

Players taking the goal position will be asked to submit a bond cheque for the use of the equipment as some pieces have not been returned.

Players registering for the 2013-2014 season will also experience a 10 per cent increase in fees as passed at the Spring meeting.

The concession will be offering more nutritional items than in its past. The Town asked the group to include healthy options to the menu at the concession.

Mike Webb, Vice President with Vermilion Minor Hockey said the Town of Vermilion has requested additions to the menu that will make it similar to that of other facilities in the area.

Although there is no scheduled start date for the league, a mass email will notify players and parents about the commencement of the 2013-2014 season.

Rowe Rushes For 306 Yards, 4 Tds In Marauder Loss Cathy Wolters Columnist

Opposing quarterbacks displayed exceptional running skills when the Vermilion Marauders hosted the Athabasca Pacers on Friday.

Corey Row scored all four Marauder touchdowns and ran for more than 300 yards in a game that also showcased the speed of Pacer QB Gaetano Minto and the blocking ability of the all grade 12 offense line of the Pacers.

Marauder coach Ben Christians passed along kudos to that offensive line after the game. A former o-lineman, he told both teams in the post-game wrap-up he appreciated the line’s contribution to the 46-26 Pacer victory.

The Marauder’s rookie-laden, injury depleted line-up continued to improve in the second game, matching the Pacers in points in the second and fourth quarters. Rookie centre Scott Zielinski and allpurpose back Damian King were singled out for their efforts as respectively one of the coaches’ and the captains’ game stars.

The Pacers managed a 21-0 lead before the Marauders scored on their first possession of the second quarter. Rookie Brayden Chilibeck returned the kickoff to the Pacer 30 on the opening play. A pass to Colton Katuski resulted in a five yard

loss before Rowe followed his blockers and found daylight on the wide side of the field for a 80-yard TD run. King kicked the convert.

Rowe repeated a long-distance TD early in third quarter on the Marauder’s first possession. . Starting on their own 10 after a bouncing kickoff, Chilibeck fought for a couple yards on first down. On second down Rowe ran away from the opposition for a 98-yard TD. The last Pacer defender lunged at him at midfield. King’s convert hit the crossbar and the Marauders were down 27-13.

The Pacers sent in backup QB Justin Kwasney in the second half until the Marauders scored on their first possession of the final quarter. The Marauder had defense forced the Pacers to turn the ball over on downs inside the Athabasca 35.

The Pacers had battled from a second down and 40 yard situation brought on by an unnecessary roughness, a procedure and two holding calls. While the Pacers powerful run attack brought the ball upfield, tackling machine Jayden Keichinger brought down running back Mike Pieroway when it appeared he’d reach the first down marker. Keichinger was credited with 15 tackles in the game.

The Vermilion drive started with a 15-yard pass to Joel Brown. A second completion to Brown was brought back on a holding call. A wide-open King caught the ball for an 18-yard gain leaving the Marauders third and two. This time it was the Marauder blockers and a determined Rowe making it first and goal from the five. The Pacers pushed back bringing down Chilibeck for a two yard loss and then almost intercepting on a pass attempt into the end zone. However, Rowe and his blockers fought into the end zone for the major on third down. King’s convert hit the uprights for the second time giving the Marauders 19 to the Pacers 33.

With Minto back at the helm, the Pacers scored on their next possession but were unable to convert the touchdown giving them a 20-point, 39-19 lead. They scored again 2:40 later at the 3 minute warning to go up 46-19.

Just 13 seconds after the Pacer score, the Marauders replied with another longdistance Rowe TD run. On the first play the Pacers were called for pass interference on Brown at their 45. Rowe then scrambled for a 60 yard scoring play. King’s convert was good giving the Marauders 26 and the Pacers 46.

Their next games are in Vegreville, Westlock and Athabasca.
