20th Annual Minburn Heifer Show Shannon O’Connor Reporter

The weather was warm and sunny for the 20th Annual Minburn Heifer and Bench show on Saturday, August 24 at the Minburn curling rink. There were two categories in this year’s competition; the Heifer Calves Pen of 3 and the Yearling Heifers Pen of 3.

The Heifer Calves Pen of 3 had thirteen entries this year and the winners in this category were: 1st Place - Sugarloaf Charolais, 2nd Place - Maxwell Simmentals.

In the Yearling Heifer Pen of 3 category: 1st Place - Maxwell Simmentals, 2nd Place - South Holden Simmentals.

The Overall Grand Champion was Maxwell Simmentals and the Overall Reserve Champion was South Holden

Simmentals. There were a total of 20 entries, down three from last year. Deanna Jackson was the M.C. for the show, the Ringman was Scott Anderson and Murray King was the Judge.

There were quite a few high quality photographs entered in the bench show as well as some lovely sunflowers, humongous zucchini, quilts, crafts, vegetables, baking, fruits and a large variety of flowers on display. One hundred and twenty

people attented the supper that followed the Heifer show.

Curtis Anderson was also on hand and on behalf of Courage Canada donated a cheque to the Minburn Ag Society for $1,000.

The Rally kickedoff the Cruisin’ for a Cause campaign which saw 104 bikes and cars, and 150 people register. “The Poker Rally raised $4,300 and was very successful,” said Tweedle. The consensus among participants seemed to be “Why walk when you can ride?”

One dollar from every Teen Burger sold on August 22 went toward the MS Society to help fund research and to provide support services for people and families affected by MS. “Proceeds from local Teen Burger sales and donations will stay within the Lloydminster Chapter (which also serves Vermilion and area),” stated Lakeland Regional D i re c to r, J o h a n n a G re e n . C h a p ter services include: information and referral, emergency funding for equipment and special assistance, counseling, advocacy, social and recreational eve nt s , a d a pte d yo g a , c h i l d re n’s programs, workshops and education and awareness presentations.

affected by MS. She is also launching a monthly support initiative at the A&W in Vermilion called, Coffee Crew. “It will be really casual. We’ll sit and talk. We buy the coffee and a snack.” Tweedle will also bring information to the Coffee Crew for individuals affected by MS or their family members as needed. “It’s a great way for people to connect to others who understand the challenges of living with MS,” said Tweedle. The MS Society also has books specifically written to help children understand what is happening when a family member is diagnosed with MS. Being diagnosed with MS is scary but part of the fear is due to the misconceptions people have about the disease said Tweedle. Over 8 0 percent of people diagnosed with MS lead functioning lives. When people arrive at her office Tweedle has a “newly diagnosed kit” available for people to take home as well as a swim and walk track pass.

Exercise is one of the keys to managing MS, she added.

RCMP Reports On August 16th, 2013, Two Hills RCMP intercepted a vehicle travelling at 185 KM/H near Two Hills,

Alberta.

Two Hills RCMP were on patrol on Highway 45, East of Two Hills, Alberta when a member observed a motor vehicle travelling at 185 KM/H in a 100 KM/H zone. The vehicle was stopped and it was learned that the driver held a Class 7 Graduated Driver’s Licence and had been consuming liquor. Open liquor was found through-out the vehicle.

The driver, a 16 year old youth, received a 30 day Graduated Drivers Licence Suspension and several violation tickets.

The driver was released to appear at a later date to answer to the speeding charge.

Two Hills RCMP would like to remind the motoring public that any person operating under a Class 7 Licence must have a qualified accompanying supervising person with them. There is also a zero tolerance for consumption of liquor. Two Hills RCMP continues to work with the motoring public to maintain safe highways for all to travel.

Two Hills RCMP will not be releasing the identity of the driver.

Two Hills RCMP Make Arrests in High-Risk Traffic Stop On August 15th, 2013, Two Hills RCMP intercepted a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 855 near Andrew, Alberta.

Two Hills RCMP were on patrol on Highway 855 near Andrew, Alberta when a member observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle entered an abandoned yard and the RCMP Officer initiated a high-risk traffic stop taking one male into custody. The second male fled the area in the heavily damaged vehicle, driving into a canola field and later crashing into a fence. The male fled on foot and was later located with the assistance of a Police Service Dog. Vegreville RCMP responded to the area to assist the member who was alone at the time.

The males are currently being held in custody awaiting their first court appearance. The males have been charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Mischief Under

$5000.00, and several traffic related offences. One male also had several warrants for his arrest.

RCMP Are Attempting To Locate 47 Year Old Clayton William GOSNEY. GOSNEY is unlawfully at large and wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for violating conditions of his Parole. GOSNEY is a habitual offender who received a 31 month jail sentence in 2011 for numerous charges including, stolen property, resist arrest and drug offences.

GOSNEY was most recently seen in the Hinton area but is also known to frequent the Sylvan Lake, Lacombe and Edmonton areas.

RCMP Looking For Suspect In Relations To A Sexual Assault Investigation Cold Lake, Alberta - Cold Lake RCMP officer seek the public help in identifying a male in relations to a sexual assault which occurred on November 11, 2012 in Cold Lake, Alberta.

On November 11, 2011, RCMP in Cold Lake were dispatched to a sexual assault complaint where an adult female was sexually assaulted at a local business.

During the course of the investigation the victim has worked with a sketch artist to draw what the assailant looked like.

The male is described as: Caucasian male 5’8” - 5’9” 150 - 160 lbs mid 20’s dark colored eyes average build nose had a bump on the bridge of it This sketch is available and attached.

Indecent Act On August 22, 2013 at approximately 2:00 a.m. the Lloydminster Municipal RCMP received a complaint of an indecent act in the area of 36 street and 50 avenue. The suspect male is described as Caucasian, in his late 30’s to early 40’s, approximately 5’11, 165 lbs, wearing dark shorts, and light coloured hat. The male has was also seen driving a newer blue or grey Chevrolet Silverado truck.

Welcome To The Jungle Shannon O’Connor Columnist

There is no doubt there is a symbiotic relationship that exists between journalism and public relations.

We need information and public relations practitioners have that information.

It now seems like a no brainer that sharing this information in an open and honest exchange is the best course of action for any organization, but this wasn’t always the case.

Early corporate America was rife with corruption and horrific working conditions largely went unreported due to the unmitigated power these corporations possessed. One of the earliest journalists to expose this corruption was Upton Sinclair. His book, “The Jungle,” exposed the terrible conditions in the meatpacking industry, and other journalists began revealing these conditions in other industries earning them the name “muckrakers.”

Sinclair began referring to himself as an “assailant.” As he and other journalists continued their assault on corporate America, the reputations of these corporations were being damaged in the court of public opinion.

An emissary was needed to explain the position of the company to the public and the public’s interests to the company.

Thus, the public relations practitioner was born. Skilled practitioners know how to work the media but also understand they cannot control the media.

The “father” of public relations was Ivy Lee who espoused the need for complete candour when dealing with the public rather than relying on circus-like press tricks employed by people like P.T. Barnum.

The public was demanding the truth and it would need to be conveyed by corporate America through the very entity that was attacking them, the media.

This basically sets the stage for media relations as we know it today. Ironically, it is the media that has now become synonymous with the jungle and is considered

a dangerous animal. Proper training is recommended when entering the arena known as media relations. This is just one area of public relations but is arguably the most important and most exciting.

The media animal cannot be controlled but the PR specialist can appease it with some good relationship building strategies which includes first and foremost, knowing what is newsworthy. There are seven rules of newsworthiness: drama, oddities, local angles, timeliness, conflict, relevance and universal appeal.

Ensure your news release is well written and focused and dangle the juicy bits in the first paragraph. We’ll bite, but in this case you want us to. We don’t like to be ignored.

(Remeber what happened to that poor rabbit in Fatal Attraction when Michaels Douglas ignored Glen Close?) That could be your organization.

To this end, it is extremely important to practice dealing with the media constantly.

No one should “feed the animals” who isn’t properly trained. This means keeping a strict regiment with your organization

throughout the year so, if a crisis should arise, no one will be fed to the lions.

In the unfortunate event that your organization does encounter a crisis, it is very important to give the media what it wants. According to Fraser P. Seitel author of “An Introduction to Public Relations,” you should always ‘Feed the Beast.’ The media is carnivorous and its meat of choice is statistics - to quote Seitel, “the grislier the better.”

Containing a crisis also includes setting up a media headquarters, establishing rules, never speculating or waging war with the media and always being truthful.

This quick overview of media relations should provide you with enough information to establish neutral if not friendly terms with the media. It is impossible to befriend a dangerous animal. But you can learn to survive an attack; you don’t want to be a victim when dealing with this animal, because the likelihood of surviving is zero percent. (That’s one of those grisly statistics we love).

I did get out to a few rivers and streams and spent an enjoyable afternoon or morning in chilly water looking for the golden dream, and did add more “colour” or flakes of g o l d d u s t to my l i t tl e g l a s s v i a l .

The golden glow in that glass vial, almost blinding when held up to the sun, makes one’s heart beat a little faster even if it’s no where near my goal of that one ounce. High water from heav y rains and late run off t h i s ye a r s l o w e d my p r o g r e s s i n s o m e a re a s , b u t I sh a ll retu r n to some of those spots for sure, and maybe, just maybe, time will be a little more accommodating for me.

I would have liked to have gotten out and fished a few more Alberta lakes, and maybe one or two more c a m p i n g t r i p s , o r eve n b e t te r, a combination of the two, which were penciled in the calendar, but again that ti m e fa c to r thi n g ju s t d i d n’ t a l l o w. D o n ’ t g e t m e w r o n g I a m very appreciative for the time and adventures I did get, and we even got out to the cabin this past weekend, however that was more a work mission than a camping adventure.

is needed for the long two month adventure. First the natural grasses were chest high this year, which is awesome for our wild animal grazing and feed, but we could lose our trucks in that stuff, so Blaine, the huntin g bu d dy an d I to o k t wo big riding mowers out there. Well now, that alone was no easy feat and just m owi n g th e g ra s s to o k t wo of u s five or six hours…the first pass was simply to knock the grass down at least knee high. Then the secon d do over took it as short as we could adjust the machines to cut, but we did a stellar job and the yard and driveway sure looks outstanding.

Then we were on a second mission. When we first arrived I was concerned about the no power and two deep freezes thawing out and the remaining odour in the deep freezes an d the cabin for that mat ter. A s we entered the cabin, I was worried as th ere was a faint fo ul o d o ur. I opened the fridge and freezer side door and was amazed there was no foul odour there at all; as a matter of fac t it was a fresh clean smell.

S o I ch e cke d th e b i g d e e p fre eze and it was as clean and fresh as the other, so what the..? So, I went to the kitchen where it seemed most obvious. I then noticed a mouse in a mouse trap that had been there for a spell…the source of the smell…thank g o o d n e s s . S o we b e t te r c h e c ke d all the traps. I was shocked when I opened the cupboard doors under the sink. We had a dozen of the sticky tra ps p lus th e co m m o n tra ps a n d there were about eight mice in total caught. A quick check of the entire cabin revealed there were eleven in total - OMG we were under attack… now the war was on. But how were

they getting in? Just to be clear the “cabin” isn’t an old rustic log cabin on ground level. The cabin is a three bedroom two full bathroom utility room RTM home…a custom “Ready To Move” built home. Its only about four years old, and the main level is four feet above ground level with our huge deck the same…the complete under side is sealed, insulated and enclosed.

TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR HOME HEALTHY AND SAFE:

DECK SAFETY PART 2

Continued from last week.

The underside of the deck should be examined to check for poor construction methods and attachment to the home itself. I do not concern myself with the code in particular as I am primarily concerned about how strong the deck is and if it looks unsafe. I always say there are several ways to build a deck, many of them wrong. But of those that are wrong, the majority are perfectly safe and strong. Remember code enforcement has not been around forever and many of the old decks are fine even if they don’t necessarily meet the standards set forth in today’s code.

Some other areas of deck safety are loose or missing railings. If the railing is rotting and about to fall off it is important to note that in the inspection. Similarly if the railing is missing it is definitely a fall hazard. Building steps is one of those tough jobs that requires a bit of math. Many homeowners can’t seem to master the concept and therefore end up with a set of steps that are either too steep, have irregular tread width or have different riser heights. The brain will often develop a pattern when treading on steps and you place your feet where your brain expects the next step to be. The problem is, it is not where it should be and down you go. It’s amazing that only one inch change in riser height or tread depth can cause a nasty fall and even death.

Finally what the deck is mounted on matters. If the deck is freestanding or attached on only one side to the home, it can usually be placed on patio blocks and 4x4’s. Today we see a lot of the concrete deck blocks in use which help add stability. If the deck has walls and a roof it is likely best to have the deck mounted on sona tubes buried well below the frost level. This ensures that the walls of the porch or deck move at the same rate as the home. It is important as well to look at the span of the stringers to see if the deck support posts are adequate and enough supports are being used in comparison to the deck size. If the deck is built with the lumber touching the ground it is usually not a good sign. If the lumber is not pressure treated outdoor wood it is also not good as rot will set in very early in the life of the deck. So my advice when evaluating a deck is to look at all these things closely and always ask yourself if the deck is safe and look for problems such as those mentioned above as well as several others I could mention.

Those Fly In Breakfasts Franklin Wolters Columnist

Long before I ever got to learn to fly, I’d drive to those breakfasts in my truck, just so I could rub shoulders with people that did fly and look longingly at all the various planes that would assemble there. Years went by and my zeal for flying increased as timed passed. I was fortunate to have a flying family close and I started spending time at Oldenburgs talking to Cliff about flying and getting his son Don to take me up in his Aeronca Champ.

It’s a bug that bites you hard and the only cure is to find a way to get into the air!! In all the fly in breakfasts that I attended I watched the various planes and talked to the owners and tried to figure out which one I would like to own and more important which one I could possibly afford!! In those times in the Western Producer classified ads there would be several pages of ads devoted to the sale of small planes.

Cliff would share his Trade a Plane paper with me too, and I really spent a lot of time going over all those ads. Cliff really liked the Taylor Craft planes and sure enough I found one in the Western Producer away in Altona Manitoba, and since I had managed to get a pipeline job, I’d earned enough for a down payment on that little gem, so I got brother-in-law Trevor Clark and Don Oldenburg to come with me to Manitoba and get my plane.

We flew over in Trevor’s 172 Cessna and Don had flown a Taylor Craft and we were set for an adventure. It was quite a trip home and I spent the winter flying the

little B.C 12 D on skis and getting familiar with its handling. Next summer I was set to take in the fly in breakfasts that I had previously driven to. The whole idea was to get there early before the crowd as you could see all sorts of rusty pilot goings on enough to pale the face of any flyer. On A calm day you could witness planes landing on either end of the same runway for instance!! The whole camaraderie changed when it was learned you actually flew in and didn’t arrive by land!! You were one of them suddenly, sure made you feel good. The breakfast was secondary I always thought, no matter how good it was. In those times there were breakfasts in almost every centre that had an airstrip and it was so fun to take in as many as you could.

The one trouble I found was that if you flew in the cool morning, by noon when it was time to fly home, the thermals were active and my little Taylor Craft and its big wings would sure give you a bouncy ride. I

remember one fly in breakfast that I took in at Wainwright. It wasn’t too far so I took my two little boys with me. They both fitted one seat and I belted them in. They had to stretch up to see out but they enjoyed the trip over and the meal. It was great to show them off, but I was concerned about the wind that had sprung up and it was a hot dry wind too! Once we were in the air heading home, we of course had the big Battle River coulee, then the Grizzly Bear to cross and the turbulence there was just a little more than scary. My little boys eyes were getting bigger and bigger and they said, “What’s wrong Dad?” They’d never experienced the beauty of a real turbulent day before. We’d always ridden in the cool evening usually, but this was different!!!

On arriving home the wind was across the airstrip and I couldn’t land safely. I knew back of brothers farm, he had a hay field that lined up with that wind, so I headed over and landed in the shelter of a bush.

No problem. I think the boys were glad to

be safely on the ground, I know I was and that evening when the wind subsided I went over and brought my little bird home to its own nest. I just wouldn’t risk a chancy landing to damage my little treasure. I wanted it whole to fly again another day.

If we keep our eyes open and our ears clear of excess wax build-up, it seems that we can find an endless array of subjects to ponder, research, and write about. From an idea sparked by a few words of strangers’ conversation overheard, to an action quickglimpsed from the side window of our cars, to world events depicted in the nightly news, to those quiet moments

of personal reflection during which we consider aspects of our lives light or heavy, material awaits a writer like pennies discarded in a vacant parking lot. Sometimes the subtlety of their shine is barely enough to catch our attention. But it doesn’t take so much to pique our interest. Observant, curious people notice things. Yes, even almost worthless, dirty old pennies. Then we pocket them covertly as though we’ve just discovered a precious treasure of indeterminable value. We take them home and clean off the debris. We see what we can see.

I like this phrase: “One thing always l e a d s to a n o t h e r.” W h e n w e p ay attention, or when we act on something that affects us, new experience becomes possible. With new experience, of course, follows the possibility of altered perspectives and, sometimes, change.

The actions we take, most of them anyway, have an effect.

Over the past few days, I’ve received a few gifts for which I am deeply grateful. Their arrival definitely affected me during the moments immediately following my receipt. While I have long suspected that someone out there somewhere must be reading what we write and, in particular, what it is that I express here in this space, hearing directly from some of you confirms that we’re communicating. I am sincerely relieved to know that I am not traveling solo on a lonesome one way highway of self-indulgence.

So this week, readers of The Voice, my column is dedicated to you and the bright lights that you have shared with me recently.

I want you to know, friend who took the time to write to me and send me an article from your hometown newspaper, that I know well the book to which the writer of the article refers.

I can tell you also that it is here, on my bookshelf, and I agree that “Eats, Shoots & Leaves” is golden. It belongs on the shelf of anyone even vaguely interested in language and grammar and humour. I was moved and humbled to read the content of your (handwrit-

ten!) gracious letter and, of course, you already know how glad I feel about receiving mail.

For the caller who left the bouquet on my voicemail even when you were unsure whether or not you had the right number, you should know that I listened not just once to your gentle words but several times. Thank you for your kindness, and for taking the chance that your message would get through. It did, and I do so appreciate having received it.

To the woman who asked our mutual friend about the poem included with my article, ‘Remember Me’, yes, I am the author of it, with the exception of the final six words as noted. Those are attributed to the late Brian Jones, formerly of the Rolling Stones.

Priorities are amazing things. Few things vary more between individuals than their primacies. What is one of the single commonalities that all of these priorities share? Time. We need to spend time on each of them. It’s when people use this very valuable time for the benefit of others that we often take for granted. Despite the fact that volunteers don’t give their time simply for recognition, it still remains that every good deed deserves thanks. For this reason, the volunteers of this years AG society fair come to mind.

The AG society’s recent parade went off without a hitch. For most of us, we came to this special event for a day of fun; without realizing the time it took to organize.

It now seems like a great time to thank these crucial volunteers for the personal hours they put in, so we all share in such a wonderful event.

The wicker furniture situation is more complicated than price. When I asked a supplier of wicker furniture why they had dropped 80 per cent of their line, I was told that the manufacturers can’t get people who want to make the furniture.

The one child per family law in China has created a labour shortage. Many of the young Chinese workers want to work in the electronics factories instead of weaving wicker furniture. Consumer demand for the plastic type wicker looking furniture, such as the type sold at WalMart has taken over the market reducing the demand for real wicker, the result impacts both the importer and the exporter of real wicker furniture. Interestingly many of the factories in China that supply WalMart have terrible working conditions as reported by the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights. Wages are 13 to 35 cents an hour, and workers are expected to work 60 to 84 hours a week, 7 days a week, with some forced 24 hour shifts.

Other well know American brands that have profited from their manufacture in China and are a concern for the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights include Ralph Lauren, 23 cents an hour, Liz Claiborne, 25 cents a hour, JC Penney .18 cents a hour, Sears, 28 cents a hour, Adidas and Nike at 16 -22 cents a hour. In the Wrangler factory in Bangladesh the highest paid worker was found to earn 24 cents an hour. The

It is hard to understand why Ralph Lauren jeans cost $695.00 and purses cost $2 ,500.00 when their factory workers in China are paid 23 cents an hour. You would be horrified at how the workers have been treated at the Sirius Satellite Radio factory in South Korea which includes 2 or 3 thirty eight hour shifts a month, and don’t complain, talk or ask to go to the bathroom unless you want to get fired or beaten. Women have reported that urine leaks out because they cannot hold it the length of time that is expected. If the Chinese factories are forced to increase wages, many of the top brands will move the production of their goods to countries like Vietnam, to maintain low labour costs. The labour conditions in many third world countries are shocking and disturbing, but what I find most unsettling is the top brands that disregard and violate human rights in favor of profits and returns for their share holders.

They know better, and yet they continue to act so shamefully. What is the true value of status symbols, company stocks and billion dollar empires really worth, when they are obtained by forced oppression, abuse and the poverty of so many people? While we can’t individually fix the problems, we can choose how we will respond in this global marketplace, by supporting brands that favor better working conditions. Now that would be a powerful message and a great emerging trend.

In 2012 Sensei Woods resumed his love of teaching by opening up NorAlta Jiu-Jitsu, a self defense based group of schools located in Vermilion, Kitscoty and his newest school in Lloydminster.

Sensei Woods was approached by Hanshi Ed Hiscoe (9th Dan in CanRyu Jiu-Jitsu) during the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union Winter C amp and was informed at that time that he had been approved to be tested for his next rank. In August, after studying, training, teaching and testing fo r th e p as t thre e m o nths Sensei Woods was successful and promoted to his next rank at this year’s Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union summer camp held in Sicamous British Columbia.

Hear Them Roar!

The “Rage Against Cancer” event that raised money to help fight cancer, took place at the Vermilion Arena on Saturday, August 24 and it was certainly action packed. There was the lacrosse game that took place between the Senior Rage and the Junior Roar, first and second period intermission entertainment, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and a whole lot of history going on.

The game between the Roar and the Rage was fast and furious. The Rage came on strong and the first period ended with the Rage ahead of the Roars by a score of 7 to 3. A spirited but friendly rivalry was on display with the Seniors trying to establish a dominant air over the Juniors by shout-

ing “My house!” after every goal.

The Juniors stayed focused and by the end of the second period were within one goal of the Seniors; Rage 14, Roar 13. The Roar eventually pulled ahead in the third period and defeated the Rage by one, with a final score of Roar 21 and Rage 20. Event Organizer Logan Scheerschmidt said, “as talented as my old buddies on the senior team are, those young juniors have legs and outstanding speed. The future of Vermilion lacrosse is in good hands.”

During the first period intermission Scheerschmidt entertained the crowd by singing the song that was the inspiration for the event. “100 Years Young.” The proceeds from every song purchased go directly toward the Canadian Cancer Society and can be purchased on the Canadian Cancer website.

It took two volunteers to remove Referee Brent Lumayko’s trademark mullet during the second period intermission of the “Rage Against Cancer” charity event.

Six players volunteered to have their heads shaved during the second period intermission as part of the event’s other fundraising and entertainment activities.

The six players were: Greg Betz, Dusten Todd, Randy Simmons, Royce Brown, Stephen Simmons and Ty Hansen.

Referee Brent Lumayko, also agreed to have his trademark mullet removed if bidding reached $250. It went to $252 and off went his mullet! Lumayko said he is known for his hair around the league, but that he was happy shave it off for a great sport supporting a great cause. Lumayko added that he will grow it back exactly the same way.

Another notable moment occurred when the original five players who started the Vermilion league 14 years ago assembled for a league photograph. At that time

Local Dance Teachers Keep Learning Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Kirstin George and Miranda Bachman are dance teachers with the Marwayne Dance Association who recently returned from the 2013 Dance Teacher’s Summit (DTS) held in New York on August 5-8.

The three day summit was at the Hilton Midtown and included dance classes, teaching seminars, interactive panel discussions and guest performances by some of the industry’s top dancers and choreographers.

“The event was specifically designed for and attended by studio teachers and dance educators from all across the globe,” stated George. “It provides you tools to make you a better teacher and offers new approaches to how you teach and the students will really benefit from this.”

Two of the instructors at the summit included Tony Dovolani of “Dancing With the Stars” fame and Choreographer Mia Michaels of “So You Think You Can Dance” fame. “Tony taught a great class on theory and technique,” said George.

“He was so down to earth and he even stayed 30 minutes after class to answer questions.”

The same was true of Emmy winning choreographer Mia Michaels’ class. “She stayed for about an hour and a half after class and posed for pictures with everyone.” It was also the most difficult class George took at the DTS. “The smallest movement looks easy to do but it is so tough because it uses body parts and muscles you don’t normally engage in dance.” There were over 250 people enrolled in that class and projection screens were needed so everyone could see, added George.

Dance instructors came from as far away as Norway and Australia to participate. It’s a great way to network and to see what other teachers are doing in their programs. “Dance is like any other industry. You have to keep up to date and always be willing to learn.”

George spent an extra 13 days in New York after the DTS and enrolled in more classes at “Steps on Broadway” and the “Broadway Dance Centre,” on her own time. “The caliber of dancing was amazing,” she said. “The Broadway Dance Centre” is featured in the movie “Centre Stage.”

Innisfree Library Summer Reading Program 2013!

The Summer Reading Program was a huge success this year! We had up to 14 kids ranging from ages 5 to 12. The children had a great time participating in each of the 6 theme days, which were Friendship, World, Food, Monster, Animal and Mystery Day. Each of the days had different stories, crafts and games that matched the theme.

The kids were shown how they could bring the stories they read to life with crafts. For example, Friendship day started out with a story about Winnie the Pooh where the

characters made paper hats. The kids then got to decorate their own paper hats just like Winnie the Pooh. For world day, everyone created a drawing of their own imaginary world, just like a boy in “Mattland”, a story read to them preceding the craft.

Even the snacks matched the theme days.

On Monster Day we had cookie monster cupcakes, and on animal day we enjoyed some healthy and delicious apple butterflies. For mystery day the kids had to earn their cupcakes by following “Blues Clues” to find the cupcake robber! We would like to give a special thanks to the board members for providing us with the snacks.

Everyone had a lot of fun taking part in all the activities planned for each day, and we can’t wait to start planning for next year!

Summer’s End Dance Camp Carmen Haslehurst Submitted

Summer’s End Dance Camp is a high energy week filled with dancing for ages 3 and up. This year, Miss Ryan, the owner and artistic director of Dance Impressions brought in instructors with amazing energy and specialties to expand the camp hosted by her dance school. Stephanie Nixon (Ritz) came to us from Settler, AB bringing her knowledge of early childhood education and movement back to her hometown for the week. She was the energy behind a fantastically motivating set of classes for the 6 and under set of dancers. This class of boys and girls grooved together to a variety of beats to experience and enhance their musicality and love of movement.

Also new to this years’ camp is an acrodance portion of the camp. Dancers could add on acro classes instructed by Vermilion’s own Tamara Martin to their dance camp experience. In their Acro classes, dancers learned and improved their acro skills, worked on balances and tricks individually and in groups. I think the favorite moment in an acro class is always when a student can repeatedly show their successes in a skill! Being upside down makes you strong!

Along with the new elements in Dance Impressions summer camp, there are some repeat experiences that are loved by everyone. Returning to Summer’s End Dance Camp for her second year is Rhonda Gillrie, owner of Danceology in Stettler, AB. Miss Rhonda teaches through her own experiences and tells

Charity Car Show

Twenty eight year old Chris Repp organized a car show to raise money and awareness for the Canadian Paraplegic Association. Repp suffered an accident six years ago that left him in a wheelchair but said he wants to “dispel the myth that someone in a wheelchair should drive a minivan.”

Repp loves working on old cars and wanted to do something for the Canadian Parapelegic Association because they “helped me out so much when I got injured.” This pristine 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air was driven by owner Gerry Duhaime to the Lakeland Mall parking lot where the show was held on Saturday, August 24. Farmer’s Market

Over 20 regular vendor tables were selling their wares at the Farmer’s Market held at the Elk’s Hall on Tuesday, August 20.”This is one of the best markets we’ve had in a long time,” said Farmer’s Market volunteer Evelyn Throndson.

Cake and coffee was served in honour of Customer Appreciation Day.

It was Children’s Day at the Farmer’s Market on Tuesday, August 20 where young people had the chance to become entrepreneurs for the day. Five children’s tables participated in the event at the Elk’s Hall. There was no better way to celebrate Canada Day than to paddle our way into Canadian wilderness. We immersed ourselves in the nature’s splendor in the lake circuit of Lakeland Provincial Park.

Loading all of the camping gear that we would need for our 4-day trek, we portaged our canoes, food, and gear 3 kilometers to access the water and our campsite situated on a narrow peninsula.

Our day adventures included exploring the connecting lakes, fishing, and trying out our lake-filled new water filters. Recurring items and events recycled from previous years’ canoe trips included homemade cookies and puffed wheat squares, clean Canadian water, good company, and campfire conversations. Of course, a tent-testing thunderstorm, dubiously submerged portage, vague map, and relentlessly thirsty mosquitoes made this trip all the more memorable!

The Vermilion RCMP would like to remind the general public that it is that time of year again, school is back in session and there will be an abundance of children on our streets going to and coming home from school. Please be aware and conscious of the influx of children and motorists on the road. Vermilion RCMP members will be visible in the school zones and will be actively enforcing the speed limits in these areas.

Vermilion RCMP would like all motorists and pedestrians to be aware of schoolrelated traffic congestion and the risks such congestion poses to the safety of the students, teachers, parents, residents, and motorists in and around school locations. The most obvious cause of traffic congestion around schools is vehicles, and the biggest source of those vehicles is parents’ dropping off and picking up their children from school. Be conscious that these changes can cause delays in travel.

Plan ahead and drive safely.

Back to school also means more children walking and biking on our roads. Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack3” thewide skills toversion negotiate traf-

fic safely. Motorists need to take special care while driving. Help our children get safely to and from school by following these important safety rules: -Be aware of school zone signs.

-Reduce speed in school zones.

-Be ready to stop at all times. Children do not always notice approaching traffic.

-Always try to make eye contact with children waiting to cross the road.

-Be patient and wait for children to complete their crossing before proceeding. -Stop when directed to do so by a crossing guard.

-You are not permitted to pass or attempt to pass another vehicle traveling in the same direction within a school zone during the hours when it is in effect.

Learn About Research That Impacts Our Future Here At Home Anita LaHay Submitted Lakeland College Applied Research is hosting a come and go event at the CSI (Centre for Sustainable Innovation) on August 29, 2013 between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. showcasing to the people of the Vermilion area innovative renewable energy systems research being conducted

close to home.

Visitors to the CSI are invited to partake in various presentations and tours throughout the afternoon including; net zero energy buildings presentations, a tour of the Jerusalem artichoke field, a solar thermal / geothermal presentation and a presentation on Biochar.

Other activities planned include a tour of the Renewable Energy Learning Centre and energy labs, energy data demonstra-

tions and explanations of solar energy.

Visitors will be able to tour research prototype shops and look at the new bio energy centre site.

The CSI officially opened on May 31, 2012 two years after Lakeland College purchased Barrhill Farms bordering the West side of the Vermilion campus. The CSI includes a renovated house now called the Renewable Energy Learning Centre that has “multiple renewable energy

systems including geothermal heat, solar thermal collection, solar electrical energy from both fixed and tracking systems and a wind turbine” according to the Lakeland College website.

This safety tip was prepared by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with the Canada Safety Council.

It’s back to school time!

As school doors open, traffic gets a little heavier on our streets. People are back from holidays, school buses and public transit are on regular routes, and more people are walking, cycling or driving to school.

To help with the transition and share the roads safely, read our safety tips and help everyone stay safe this school year!

1) Obser ve School Zone Speeds Although you should always obey posted speed limits, it is espec i a l l y i m p o rtant during the s c h o o l y e a r.

Children crossing the road on their way to and from school can easily get distracted and step into harm’s way. Slowing down and being vigilant is crucial to keeping kids safe. Children are often out throughout the day at recess, lunch, and for certain classes, so it’s important to drive slowly throughout the day.

2) Obey the Crossing Guard A crossing guard is there to keep children safe. If you come up to a set of lights, and the light turns green, b u t t h e c ro s sing guard still says stop, follow his/ her direction and not the traffic light.

4) School Buses M o s t mishaps take place outside the b u s. M a ke su re c h i ldren don’t arrive too early at the bus stop where they can wander or get into mischief. Make sure children wait well away from the road and stay back until the school bus makes a full stop and the doors open. Explain that they must walk at least three meters (10 feet) away when crossing in front of the bus so the driver can see them.

When driving your car near a school bus please note that extra caution is needed. You shouldn’t pass a school bus when the signal lights are flashing (as children are often crossing the road at that time), and drive slowly as a general precaution.

The following information is useful for school bus passengers and their parents.

Rules for getting on the bus safely: Be at the bus stop on time. Never run to or from the bus.

Wait at the designated stop in a safe place well back from the side of the road.

Re m e m b e r th e d a n g e r zo n e around the bus. The danger zone is anywhere close enough to touch the bus. The bus driver cannot see you when you are in the danger zone.

If you cross the street to get on the bus: when the bus comes, wait until it has come to a complete stop. The bus driver will make sure all the traffic stops. The stop arm will be out and the red lights will be flashing. Watch the driver. When the driver knows it is safe, he or she will signal you to cross, but watch for traffic yourself.

Walk, don’t run.

Hold the hand rail as you get on the bus. Don’t push or shove.

Save snacks for snack time at school or for when you get home. They may spill or you may choke if the bus goes over a big bump.

No fighting, shouting or playing in or around the bus.

Always follow the bus driver’s instructions.

Rules for leaving the bus safely: When you leave the bus, hold the

handrail and step away from the bus.

To cross the street in front of the bus, walk ahead at least 10 giant steps (three meters). Cross only when the driver gives a signal. Cross the street in single file.

If you drop something near the bus, don’t pick it up. Tell the driver or another adult first.

If everyone is getting off the bus, the people at the front leave first. Do not push.

Be familiar with the bus driver’s rules for emergencies.

6 Tips For Back To School Traffic Safety

Now that September is here, children are returning to school in force and that means we all have a responsibility to be a little more watchful on the roads.

This is particularly important at times of day when children are more likely to be outside of the school – including when school begins, lunchtime and after school.

In 2004, Safe Kids Canada reported that pedestrian injury is the third highest cause of injury related death among Canadian children. Driving defensively and observing the rules helps keep everyone safe and sound.

I n a d ditio n, d rivin g infra c tio ns committed in a school zone can substantially increase your car insurance rates.

Offenses such as improperly passing a school bus, failure to obey a school crossing sign or speeding/passing in a school zone are considered major offences. These convictions, depending on your insurance company, can increase your insurance premiums by 15% or more for a first offence and 25% or more for subsequent offences.

Here are six important safety rules to keep in mind when driving on or around school property this fall.

1. Always stop for a school bus when the lights are flashing.

Children have a limited sense of danger and are often excited and energetic when getting on or off a school bus.

Watch out for children who may dart out from between stopped school buses or parked cars. Don’t obstruct a school bus loading zones and be patient as children get on and off the bus.

Motorists travelling in both directions are required to stop for a school bus when its lights are flashing and the stop arm is out. Failing to stop for a school bus carries with it a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.

2. Observe the posted speed limits.

It’s important to slow down as you approach a school zone and watch for children who may run out into harm’s way. Posted speed limits in school zones are typically either 30km/hr or 40km/hr. Travelling at a slower speed gives drivers time to stop safely in

case there are children crossing the road unexpectedly. Playground zones have the same speed limits and are in effect from dawn until dusk each day.

Children may be out and about at various times throughout the day for recess, lunch time or field trips so you need to be careful when driving in school zones.

Respect your school’s posted pick up and drop off areas to avoid creating unnecessary traffic congestion and unsafe conditions. This includes respecting “No Parking” and “No Stopping” zones.

3. Obey the crossing guard at all times.

Whether you think they are right or not, obey crossing guards at all times.

Children expect that crossing guards will only allow them to cross if the situation is safe, so disregarding a crossing guard’s instructions can have serious consequences.

4. Do not pass other vehicles in a school zone.

This is a dangerous practice that is prohibited in school zones. When passing other vehicles, you may be travelling quickly and your overall visibility is reduced. Children crossing the street won’t expect you to be passing and won’t be prepared for your car being in a different lane than usual.

Similarly, you should not perform a U-turn or 3 point turn, or even driving in reverse in a school zone if you can avoid it. Any sort of unpredictable driving manoeuvre may catch children off guard and cause or contribute to an accident.

5. Avoid driving into the school parking lot.

School parking lots tend to be very congested, especially at designated school pick up and drop off times.

Increased traffic means an increased likelihood of accidents. It’s safer for everyone if you park across the street and use the cross walk to get to school property.

6. Expect the unexpected.

Children are unpredictable and can run out into traffic at any time. Watch carefully as you approach a school zone and be prepared for children to step on to the road unexpectedly.

The County of Two Hills, No.21 is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Agricultural Fieldman.

The Assistant Agricultural Fieldman will have the following responsibilities: • Assist the Agricultural Fieldman in the administration of Agriculture Service Board Programs.

• Carry out duties as an inspector under various Provincial Acts and Regulations. e.g. Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Soil Conservation Act, etc.

• Supervisory duties for the municipal spraying program and perform duties in the municipal spraying program as required.

• Perform duties in weed identification, crop insects and diseases as well as performing Agricultural Pest Monitoring.

• Perform duties related to Beaver Dam removal and Dynamite Blasting.

• Assist in developing Agriculture related Environmental programs and awareness information for ratepayers.

• Execute other related duties as required.

The successful applicant should have the following: • Agricultural and Industrial Alberta Pesticide Applicators License (or the ability to obtain these licenses) • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in an Agriculture related field an asset.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.

• Good communication, interpersonal and leadership skills in a team environment.

• Ability to work in a multi task environment • A practical agricultural background would be an asset • A Blasting Permit (or ability to obtain) or knowledge in trapping would also be an asset.
