Increased RCMP Presence At The Fair Shannon O’Connor Reporter

This year there was an increase in the number of offences committed at the 107th Vermilion Agricultural Fair. According to Corporal Gord Yetman this may simply be due to the increased RCMP presence at the Fair.

“More offences can be detected when we have more officers patrolling the grounds,” said Yetman.

In addition to the nine regular officers from the Vermilion RCMP Detachment (seven Constables and two Noncommissioned Officers), six extra Officers from the areas of Cold Lake, Boyle, St. Paul and Kitscoty patrolled the grounds on the two busiest nights

of the Fair (Friday and Saturday).

The 15 Officers issued a total of 79 tickets related to alcohol offences, su ch as tra nsp o r tin g o p e n li q u o r and public intoxication. Of these 79, 12 people were lodged in cells due to public intoxication. “More of the p e o p l e we c a m e a cros s this ye a r seemed to be more intoxicated,” said Yetman. “There were a few groups of young people staying in the camping area. It’s hard to regulate liquor and camping,” he added.

This is Yetman’s fourth year working the fair and he said when it comes to planning the event the Town of Vermilion, the Ag Society and the RCMP all work together. “We learn something new every year and tweak

it for the next year.”

For instance, no officer gets leave during the Fair. With 20,0 0 0 plus p eople comin g throu gh th e gates over the course of three days Yetman said they need everybody available.

“Anyone who has a day off during the Fair needs to reschedule that day.” A large police presence on the grounds means the goal of the RCMP can be met which is “To ensure a safe and secure event,” added Yetman.

The Officers were also involved in directing traffic the final night of the Fair just after the fireworks. They were at strategic intersections in the town such as Beckie Scott Trail and Hwy. 41 as well as other heavy traffic intersections ensuring the safe flow of

traffic from the fairgrounds.

Three tickets were issued under the Traffic Safety Act and five were issued under vehicle equipment regulations.

There was also one ticket issued under the Tobacco Reduction Act for a total of 88 offences committed at this year’s Fair.

Yetman had nothing but praise for the Ag Society and said they work hard every year to put on an event that is really well-run. This year with the permission of Lakeland College the Ag Society moved the camping area to the college grounds to make that area easier to patrol. “The Ag Society did an excellent job ensuring this stays a family event,” added Yetman.

Warm summer weather has brought about an increase in pedestrian traffic after dark and reports have been received regarding groups of persons checking door handles on parked vehicles after hours.

Suspects have been observed on foot, bicycle and skateboard and have fled when noticed by members of the public. Despite increased patrols by Police, this criminal activity has been noted to occur in the early hours prior to sunrise under the cover of darkness.

Members of the public should ensure they lock their vehicles and take valuables with them, or tuck belongings out of sight from wouldbe thieves. Parking in a garage, on a d r i veway o r u n d e r n e a th s tre et lights in well lit areas can also deter

If ALUS Were A Woman Shannon O’Connor Columnist

I have thought of ALUS (pronounced Alice) often since first hearing the name and it got me thinking if ALUS were a woman who she would be.

After conducting a quick study of “her” attributes, I came up with what I consider the most obvious answer to this hypothetical musing.

Firstly, I would like to explain the circumstances surrounding my first introduction to ALUS. I was invited, as a member of the media, to attend two events that were being held on the same day, (June 13).

The first was the announcement of the $250,000 grant awarded to the County of Vermilion for upgrades to improve internet connectivity.

The second announcement was that the County of Vermilion had received Wetland Agency Recognition status in conjunction with its work in Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS).

Understandably, the first announcement received most of the press attention due to the fact it had a huge dollar figure attached to it and it was a black and white issue that appealed to our species desire to erect tall objects (in this case satellite towers).

The ALUS announcement, however, was a mystery; at least it was to me and the explanation of ALUS on the invitation

did more to confuse than enlighten me.

“ALUS is an ecological goods and services program proposal that is unique because it is designed by farmers, for farmers. It recognizes the value of conserving and restoring Canada’s natural capital while respecting and rewarding Canada’s natural capital while respecting and rewarding the important role that farmers play in environmental management.”

As I later came to understand, ALUS provides a monetary incentive to farmers to retain or restore wetlands, reforestation and planting of native vegetative cover to name a few. ALUS definitely stands for something.

Concrete dollar amounts were not discussed but there was a sense that you would not be able to retire on the incentives offered by ALUS. Therefore, ALUS is sensible and inspires respect and a sense of duty to the environment. Wetlands, reforestation and planting native vegetative cover, all result in a healthier environment. THIS is the big pay off for farmers!

They say beauty is in the eye of the

beholder and I would have to say that ALUS isn’t a real looker unless you know what you’re looking for. The wetlands and the native grasses that are planted as part of the program are rather unspectacular until you realize they are responsible for the survival of many bird and wildlife species, they purify the air and naturally reduce flooding in many vulnerable areas among many other good things. These are the “ecological goods and services” provided by ALUS the beautiful.

Moreover, this is the key to understanding ALUS. There are the usual policies and procedures to abide by when dealing with ALUS in an organizational sense, however when stripped of the politics ALUS in the purest sense would remain the same, a natural beauty.

This mindset requires a completely new way of looking at the world. Keeping things the way they are instead of trying to reinvent what is already perfected seems almost counter intuitive to our species but of course, we KNOW it isn’t. We have some bad habits to break but if we continue to survey the good work of ALUS and see

Cheese cake has it’s origins in ancient Greece. The ancient cheese cake was made of honey, a bit of flour and cheese that was worked into a soften consistency. The ingredients were formed into a mass and then baked.

Cheese cake was a popular in ancients Greece for wedding cakes and high energy food for athletes in the Olympics. When

the Romans evaded Greece, part of their plunder was the Greek cheese cake recipe.

The Romans with all of their evading and conquering across Europe can be credited with spreading the cheese cake recipe.

Cheese cake is one of those special foods that have delighted civilization for many millennia. Even after thousands of years, we are still enjoying cheese cake, almost worldwide. There are many versions of cheese cake using various ingredients and differing methods. This recipe uses less cream cheese and sugar than most.

The debenture is to be repayable to the Alberta Capital Finance Authority in a maximum of fifteen (15) equal, consecutive annual installments of combined principal and interest, the annual interest not to exceed Eight percent (8%), or the interest rate as fixed from time to time by the Alberta Capital Finance Authority.

While some cheese cakes are heavy, this one is light and has a wonderful refreshing lemon flavor. It is made in a blender and does not require baking, which makes it an ideal summer desert.

Lakeland College Offers Unique Program Shannon O’Connor Reporter

A new program called Street Rod Technologies is set to roll this fall at the Vermilion campus of Lakeland College.

Instructor and co-creator of the program Stuart Ribey said this program is unique to Canada. “There’s quite a few of these programs in the States, but not here.”

Ribey and the Dean of Trades and Technology Bert Samuelson decided there was a need for a niche market course at the college. “When the economy is as strong as it is in Alberta right now people start to restore vehicles,” said Ribey.

So far, he is very impressed with the response. The program will have a cap of 12 students for the first year in order to adjust to the inevitable growing pains associated with the development of any new course. “We have nine people regis-

tered already,” added Ribey. The course is primarily appealing to male students just out of high school, but a few girls have also taken the tour.

A combination of instruction and lab time will comprise the 780 hours of the course (one academic year). The course will be 50% theory and 50% practical. “It is a busy schedule,” said Ribey.

In the theory component, the students can expect to learn about the history of the automobile, genres of vehicles and the present state of the automobile industry.

The practical part of the course involves MIG and TIG welding projects, steel and special metals projects, sheet metal shaping and bodywork metal finishing.

Street Rod Technologies is a certificate program. It provides a solid foundation for students to build on who wish to pursue an apprenticeship in this field.

“This is a fairly big market. There happens to be dozens of restoration and customization shops in Alberta, including bike shops,” said Ribey. “We are receiving a great response Tree & Stump from the industry,” he removal. added.

It’s so wonderful in a dry spell in July to wake up to the sound of thunder and rain drumming on the roof. The rainy spell we just had brought back such wonderful memories of my time on the Grizzly Bear Coulee, “Kule” Vue Ranch to be exact, when I had my Taylor Craft and a license to fly it. I’d wake up in the early morning and note that the clouds had gone and the wind was calm. It didn’t take long to decide I needed an airplane ride. I’d jump out of bed and head for my hangar where my bird awaited me. I had a tidy tank of gas and I’d pump the tanks full and check all the sediment bulbs and filters. I loved walking around my flying machine and marvel at its simplicity and the fact that it could with very little coaxing, lift me and soar

me into the sky. I’d lovingly check all the controls and then push it out of the hangar and set the chocks in front of the wheels, turn on the switch to the left magneto, so it wouldn’t kick back, open the throttle just a crack and give the primer just a little shot of prime, since it was warm out. Very rarely did the little Continental take more than a second flip to come to life and sit there at idle ready for further instruction.

How special it was to climb in and do up the seat belt and set the altimeter to the proper setting and then hold the brakes and check the mags for proper function.

All is READY so I’d take the ropes that connected to the chocks and stow them in the storage behind the seat. Depending on the wind , I’d have to maybe go to the east end of my strip to take off, if it was calm I’d just start off from the hangar and take off east right over the big coulee at the end.

It was always a thrill to feel the plane lift off and be airborne, I just never ever got

used to that feeling. I was so privileged to have been able to do that. Imagine, that for all history before the Wright Brothers, it just wasn’t possible at all and there I was fortunate enough to do just exactly that. I’d soar over my fields and see how they looked after they’d had a good drink and then I’d go have a tour over my coulee pasture to check the cows and see if the bulls were home. In just a few minutes of flying I had checked my crops and my cows and then I’d probably go on a circle check and see how much rain the neighbours received, it was spectacular to just take in the beauty of the country, I just never seemed to get enough of flying over my coulee and ravines and in early morning I’d often see so many deer and coyotes. It would always fascinate me and make the whole idea of flying so very worthwhile. I’d had so many folks tell me that they always wanted to learn to fly too, but somehow I’d been lucky enough to have been able

to follow my dream and realize it coming to pass.

Yes, I’d have to say that while rain is the nectar of life for all the country to make it bloom an realize its potential, I’ll always credit the idea that flying was very much like that nectar of life for me, in that it seemed to bring out the best thoughts in me. Before I flew a plane, I was terrified of city traffic and lacked the confidence to settle down and realize if I could fly a plane perhaps I should be able to manage a vehicle in the city traffic. When you fly an aircraft you know you’re the reason the plane can do its thing and stay straight and level or do whatever it is you want. What a terrific confidence builder. It was always a meaningful experience to navigate your way around and enjoy the country and then in good time of course to line up on your strip and see if you could just touch down without the slightest bump and feel the satisfaction of a well enjoyed flight.

High-Tech Training In Modernized Fire Tower At ETC Lakeland College News Release

Response training for building or structural fires at Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre (ETC) now involves more realistic scenarios thanks to extensive renovations to the 7-storey fire tower at the Vermilion campus.

Piped-in propane, fire-retardant paneling and custom-made props were installed in the tower in July to simulate rooms in various kinds of residences.

Until now, fires were built by hauling in straw bales and wood pallets. But Kirk McInroy, ETC manager of technical services, explains that the wood and straw smoke often blew into the community. “We used to shut down training if it impacted the hospital or nursing home,” he says.

The fires also resulted in heavy soot and extremely high heat buildup, which had begun to disintegrate the cement walls and ceilings. Now, any smoke you see at the

fire tower will be artificial theatrical smoke.

ETC students learn to handle smoke before fire. They begin training by entering an enclosed structure (the smoke tower) in full gear to practice search and rescue scenarios within a zero-visibility smoke-filled environment. This is a harmless environmentally friendly water-based theatrical smoke.

With the fire tower renovations, response training involves more lifelike scenarios. Various rooms on the first three floors of the tower simulate apartment rooms: a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and garage. Clean burning propane is piped to each prop with the master controls at the base of the tower. Instructors use a wireless hand-held pendant inside the burn room to turn the fire on, off, or to change the size and intensity of the fire to low, medium, or high depending on how the firefighters are attacking the fire.

Custom-made solid stainless steel props— a car, bed, couch, and stove—can ignite

and burn without damage. Fire-retardant panels that simulate drywall prevent further disintegration of the tower’s walls and ceilings.

McInroy points out that controlling the fires and smoke with a pendant (and backup control room) increases valuable practice experience. “When students make a mistake, the instructor can stop the fire, give students feedback, and start again. During a scenario, the students can

also get caught in a simulated fire rollover— a very realistic situation.” And now, each student will get more nozzle time.

The fire tower has been a landmark at the ETC for 22 years. The investment in installing propane and new props means cleaner air in Vermilion, enhanced training scenarios, and more practice time for all students. For details on ETC programming visit www.lc-etc.ca

knowledge of events. If only they wouldn’t have... or, where were those who were responsible for....? or, this wouldn’t have happened if....

Some of us gather together for support.

Those who find solace in the community of their faith seek out the company of persons who may hold them up through the worst of days. We ask questions, perhaps the most repeated one being simply, “Why?” We may vicariously return to those moments just prior to the moment when everything changed, tormenting ourselves with imagined scenes of horror as if by ruminating on the worst we may more quickly traverse the bridge from here to somewhere better, a place where we can regain some control over our lives and the events that occur within it.

None of us, however, can change what has already occurred. No matter our position, be it on the front line if one of the lost is someone dear to us, or on the periphery, as a member of the community, as a parent, or another compassionate human being, we are united in our collective powerlessness to change anything already past.

Teach your children well. A simple lyric from the song of the same name delivered with poetically fragile harmonies of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash.

As parents, we do our best to adhere to this advice. We love them well. We support and provide for them. We guide them through knowledge gained through our own experience. We encourage their independence. We help launch them into the pathways of their own private lives.

But we cannot protect them from the world, or from fate. None of us wields that kind of power. And not one of us will escape this life without being marked by some unpredictable, life-altering event. It seems only a matter of degree.

When I read some of the commentary left by members of the public in response to the CBC News online, I was reminded of the great diversity among people. Many offered gentle messages of condolence and support for the families now bearing what must seem inconsolable grief. They expressed shock, sorrow, compassion. A few remembered that there is a survivor and offered their support to him as well.

Some offered personal opinion as to how the event might have been prevented. As if they could know. Some speculated on who might bear the blame. Some offered judgements of deficient parenting, citing their own methods as undoubtedly more responsible, their words invoking a superior “Not MY kids” tone. Some inserted a hint of lewdness, appointing themselves as morality and conduct police. Some railed against the current driving laws, the

roads, the prevalence of transport trucks in the area, the oil industry, the association of boys and girls, darkness, the inherent recklessness of young male drivers. Some seemed to persecute Youth itself. One wondered why none of the parents had posted yet, as if posting on a public forum on the internet would be foremost on the mind of any parent having just received the worst news of a lifetime.

When I see the faces of Aimie, Jayden, Kristopher, Mackenzie, Naomi, Tarren, I see in them the faces of my own children. Young, full of vigor, mischief, beauty, and potential. And every one of them well loved and cherished. Every parent stands silently with the parents of those children today. With compassion. In remembrance.

We extend our support to the lone survivor, for while his physical wounds may heal in time, the rest will linger deep within him forever.

There may be no answers that will help us to understand this or other events like it. No matter what is discovered about who did what, some things defy our yearning to make sense of them. Still, even when all that we hold dear in this world is shattered, we must find a way to endure the days that follow the worst kinds of events.

Estates often involve large mutigenerational wealth transfers, and there are many tools that can help make estate planning more efficient.

Like any tools, estate planning tools can cause unintentional harm if used improperly. Since an estate plan is the foundation and support for your Will, it is important to have a qualified financial advisor overseeing the process.

An estate plan maps the outlay for what actually happens when you die.

The first step in creating one is to gather a list of all of your assets and all of your debts. Confirm the beneficiary designations on any registered assets, the adjusted cost base of nonregistered assets, and any specific bequests you may have.

The second step is to bring a copy of these documents to your financial advisor. Together they will help you create a net worth statement and cash flow statement. Then they will project the financial consequences of your estate, including an approximate analysis of how much tax will be owing, who will be responsible for the taxes, how your final assets will be distributed thereafter.

The third step is to project the viability of your estate plans. You know how much your spouse will receive, but how much do they actually need to maintain their standard of living? Should more advanced strategies such as Estate Freezes or Trusts be considered? If you own a business, do any updates need to be made to your succession plan, and is adequate funding in place?

Vermilion Fair Pony Chariot Results The final results for the APCCA Pony Chariot Races that took place over the course of the three day Vermilion Agricultural Fair are as follows: Chariot winner for the show was Keyton Beaubien who was injured in the final heat on Saturday, July 27. An ambulance was called to the scene and he was taken to the hospital and therefore unavailable for the presentation.

Cassie O’Connor was second and Adam Waldner placed third.

Vermilion Fair Chuckwagon Results The show winners for the APCCA Chuckwagon races that took place in front of the Grandstand over the course of the Vermilion Ag Fair are as follows: First place Neil Salmond, Second place Wayne Hardstaff and Third place Mark Harris.

Parade Results Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Chairman of the 107th Vermilion Agricultural Fair Parade, Russ Cameron said “This year everything went really well. The numbers were there.” As Chair, Cameron was dealing with 133 entries, and around 60 horses in this year’s parade which made things a little tricky in terms of directing parade traffic.

Eleven Judges were on site to award the prestigious ribbons for best entry in each category. “George said you should always have 12 judges just in case,” said Cameron referring to his former Parade Co-Chairman, George Webb who passed away last year. He commended George’s replacement, Kathy An d erso n fo r d oin g su ch a great job this year “But I sure miss George’s presence,” he added.

Cameron noted some categories were down in numbers such as Antique Tractors and others were up like the Comic category.

One piece of advice he is offering

4-H Light Horse Draw Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Members of the 4-H Light Horse Club in Vermilion held a saddle draw on Thursday, July 31 as their yearly fundraiser activity. With the assistance of members, family, friends and sponsors that include: Co-op, Nilsson Bros.

UFA, Back 40 Coffee Shop and Lindsay Everest the club managed to sell nearly 2,000 tickets at $2 each. Leader Lesley Farkash said the saddle draw was a great success for the club. The winner was Ruby Slonski of Saskatchewan and her name was drawn by Voice Reporter Shannon O’Connor.

Thank you so much to the 4-H families who volunteer before, during and after achievement day to make the day run so smoothly.

Over the course of the three day fair musicians and singers gathered to play and sing Jazz,

Southern Rock, Celtic Western Gospel, Country, Folk and Blues.

Dees a musician himself even got his seven piece band Credimus back together after 20 years to perform during the Friday, July 26 line-up.

Dees was impressed with the talented ar tists who came from various places including Vancouver, Myrnam, Edmonton, Lloydminster and Derwent to name a few and is already looking for ward to next year’s line-up of talent.

For the fourth year, the Summer Fun Program celebrated a Random Acts of Kindness Day. Twenty-one children in the program visited the Vermilion Valley m Hortons Lodge to distribute carnations and handmade cards to seniors at the center on Monday, July 29.

Random Acts of Kindness is an unof-

ficial holiday that is celebrated the second full week of February each year. According to the Random Acts of Kindness website, the purpose of the week is to invite people to give and receive kindness daily.

Educators will often lead discussions and involve students in an activity involving kindness. Although Random Acts of Kindness is celebrated in February, these acts are encouraged every day of the year.

Program Coordinator Nekayla Zayac, who is studying to be an RN, said it is her favourite day in the Summer Fun Program line-up. “Each of the kids will get a chance to brighten a resident’s day. You can tell

The nursing staff at the Vermilion Valley Lodge guided the children to the rooms of seniors they felt would appreciate a visit.

Vi Felt, a Vermilion Valley Lodge resident is one of the seniors who received a pink carnation and a handmade card from one of the children in the program; Mackenzie Warman who turned nine that day. Felt was pleasantly surprised by the visit and thanked Mackenzie for her kindness.

The spirit of carrying out a random act of kindness is that it provides joy to the receiver and the giver. This is a wonderful way for the children of the Summer Fun program to reach out to the elderly at the Vermilion Valley Lodge.

Chuckwagon Outriders At Western Financial Shannon O’Connor Reporter On Friday, August 2 five Canadian Professional Chuckwagon outriders appeared at Western Financial to sign autographs, hand out bandanas and take pictures with members of the community. Vermilion Branch Manager, Eileen

Cholowski said “This event is a way for us to celebrate our community connection and say thank you to the residents of Vermilion.” A free BBQ was also held on site while local residents mingled with the racers.
