Lakeland College Celebrates a Century of Alumni at Homecoming

Alumni filled the Lakeland College Cafeteria June 7th at the Homecoming Supper where class mates reunited over a good meal. 1958/59 graduate Tom Kibblewhite (right) can still fit his college sweater and has attended nearly 50 reunions at the College having been able to return for the yearly reconnection with the lifelong friends he had made at the school. (left) Gwen Kibblewhite is not a Lakeland college alumnus, but this has not prevented her from becoming a part of the reunion committee and assisting with the decorations and preparations for the two day celebrations.

The ESL classes contain a variety of new arrivals from countries located around the world. This fact sparked the idea to create an Anniversary celebration for the society that reflected the multicultural dynamic of their student body.

Executive Director, Chandra Blair credited much of the planning for the days festivities to Board of Director member Donna Garnett, “She just took the idea and ran with it, making the arrangements and contacts and putting the event together.”

The event which was housed both in and out doors got off to a wet start as rain poured down on the parade led by RCMP, Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA, Dr. Richard Starke and his dog Liesl, yet the moisture did not dampen spirits and in spite of the downpour the parade made its way down 49th Avenue.

the remainder of the day allowing visitors to the festival an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor activities which included; an outdoor market, a children’s activity area manned by VIBE and their family members, a hot dog sale and live music featuring a variety of local performers.

The celebration finished off with the potluck supper featuring over 50 diverse dishes for the nearly 150 diners to sample.

With the event receiving even more support and positive feedback than initially expected, CLASS is seriously contemplating repeating the event again next year.

can go into each coffee order. There are so many choices and combinations available to the Tim Hortons consumer and so many machines involved in making those options possible.

Owners Greg and Kristine Whitney along with their staff demonstrated great patience with the volunteers who came to participate on Camp Day, some participating for the first time this year and others like myself who have not been behind the Tim Horton’s Counter since the first Camp Day in Vermilion last year. I confess forgetting absolutely everything I learned last year and suspect I was more hindrance than efficiency as I fumbled around behind the counter getting underfoot.

Taking the additional bodies in stride the staff managed to ensure the coffees were right, the orders were filled quickly and the newly trained volunteers left with a lot more appreciation for what these coffee and donut gurus do on a daily basis.

Rubbing elbows with the Mayor of Vermilion, Town Council members, Emergency Workers and RCMP; Camp Day at Vermilion’s Tim Horton’s was once again a day about fun and fundraising. A total of $3,978.08 for this location alone.

Volunteers attempted to perform coffee service and assist the professional staff at the Vermilion Tim Horton’s location throughout the day; as locals arrived to support the Camp Day effort, an effort devoted to making sure any child who wants to enjoy the camp experience has the opportunity to do so.

It was a unique experience for those of us java addicts who find ourselves on the opposite side of the counter daily, as we were taught the highly technical processes that

Canada and Tim Horton’s owners donate the proceeds from this day’s coffee sales to the Kid’s Foundation.

Many locations also augment the coffee contribution with other fundraising activities in their stores throughout Camp Day, as did Vermilion. There were groups of employees’ window washing at the drive-thru, a ring toss manned by the Whitney’s son, Devon who had participants purchasing tosses to winning Camp Day prizes, a silent auction, a selection of donated items available for purchase and one could even contribute to the cause by renting a tent $1 or renting a cabin for $5.

Founded in 1974, the Kid’s Foundation is committed to providing children whose families are economically challenged with the opportunity to attend a fun-filled camp environment. Last year Tim Horton’s raised a record $11 million, which enabled over 15,000 ages 9 and 12, to attend a 10-day summer camp session or a seven day winter camp session.

Editorial

It Takes A Team Trudy McKenzie Editor

We all enjoy the pat on the back for a job well done. The sense of pride one feels when their efforts are acknowledged and someone has taken time out of their busy day to let you know that, what you do and how you’re doing it is appreciated.

Lately at the Vermilion Voice we have been on the receiving end of much praise, be it from visitors to the office popping in to tell us we are doing good, or while out on a story having someone stop to tell me how much they enjoy our paper. I was particularly pleased by two such occurrences over the past couple weeks.

The first occurred two weeks ago, when a gentleman popped into the office to tell us that our May 27th edition was our best paper yet! Out of the office at the time I would have loved to find out what about the edition struck such a chord with him, but I thank him for taking the time to let us know he is following our progress and is enjoying our efforts.

The second occurred this week.

While attending a story I was engaged

by a woman who expressed her enjoyment with our paper. She shared how much she enjoyed reading my editorials and our articles, how much she has enjoyed seeing our paper grow, how she enjoys the local coverage and she even expressed wonder at how we are able to attend so many events. It was humbling to sit and hear her appreciation for our labour of love, something we work very hard to produce but fills us with such satisfaction each week; and to feel her enjoyment of our efforts.

This is the wonderful thing about working for a newspaper. Each week is a fresh start. You start with a blank page and strive to fill it with interesting stories, beautiful pictures, captivating ads and ultimately try to produce something that can be appreciated by both your readers and your advertisers. You have the ability to try new things weeding out that which does not work or fine tuning that which does. At the end of each week you have the satisfaction of accomplishment before you in the form of a completed edition. You get instant feedback from your public and when producing the next edition you are able to apply the lessons learned to produce something even better!

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor We would like to thank the organizers of this year’s Vermilion and District Music Festival for their hard work. We can easily imagine what a labour of love this was. The Festival is a great opportunity for young performers and musicians to perform and compete, while learning about their art from experienced adjudicators. Without the President and Committee coordinating all the classes, volunteers giving their time and energy and donors giving scholarships, the Festival couldn’t happen.

We would also thank the Rotary Club for the financial support they gave us when we were recommended to represent Vermilion at the Alberta Provincials

Competition. Catherine competed in the intermediate Viola class, while Patrick competed in Speech Arts. We are very grateful for the Club’s support.

Our special thanks to: our parents, who always encourage us to practice; Mrs. Maryleen MacRae, our strings teacher of many years; Mr. Jeremy Laurence, who helped us improve our performance skills, stage presence, elocution, blocking and acting, which have helped us with every sort of performance, (particularly Speech Arts); Mr. Rex Cunningham, who facilitated our application to Provincials and finally, the wonderful MacDonald family, who introduced us to Stephen Leacock and other great classics!

A team that includes; Brigitte our office manager who juggles every task extended to her, our office expert who greets clients, readers and callers answering their questions and directing their requests while managing accounts and fulfilling untold tasks. Sally is our graphics designer who can create amazing and beautiful advertisements for our clients, she also processes every picture that goes into the paper, refining and perfecting the pictures, ensuring that all the effort extended capturing the moment make it to the page beautifully, Sally also puts the final product together, prepares it for the internet and is the sunny face at the front of our office.

Sue our publisher and sales manager is the hummingbird of our office she has so many things on her plate it is often hard to imagine how she accomplishes them all. She faces the risk of rejection daily while pursuing sales leads; sales

so necessary as without them there would be no paper on which to print our stories. As Publisher, Sue oversees every aspect of the paper from sales and billing to advertising and editing, she shops for office supplies, offers a warm shoulder on a hard day, critiques, consoles and in a pinch will grab a picture or two. Like a beautiful hummingbird she flits from task to task in a flurry that is hard to follow. Bea is our book keeper and while we only enjoy her company once a week she is the gal that keeps the money straight, the books in order and ensures the cheques are sent to keep the lights on and the staff paid.

When you add to this group of dedicated ladies the Columnists who weekly invest, create and send in their works, the School writers who reliably offer up their efforts every week to keep us in the know about what is happening in each of their schools and the local submissions of community members and sports moms; there comes to be a pretty large crowd of people for which the success each Vermilion Voice edition relies. A substantial group who can take credit for the accolades we have been receiving of late, a group which has grown by one more as we welcome Shannon O’Connor; Vermilion Voice’s newest reporter.

My Dad died last year and I am not looking forward to fathers day! My Dad and I were very close. We did alot of things together and spent alot of time just talking. My Mom has been remarried for several years. She is so wrapped up in her own life, it doesn’t look like she misses him. I don’t think she notices how much I miss him.

What should I do for Fathers Day? Daddy’s Girl Dear Daddy’s Girl: You should celebrate Fathers Day like never before. Be grateful that you had a wonderful relationship with your Dad! The first Fathers Day and special occasions will be difficult depending how you look at them. I would say, plan to go to an event or do something with a good freind that day. There is a great car show with entertainment in Vegreville every year on fathers day. Do something you like to keep yourself busy. You could do something to honour you Dad. A poem, a letter, a picture collage, plant a tree.

Remember to give yourself time to greive and to realize it’s o.k. to miss your Dad. One thing very important is to keep talking about your Dad. It’s good for the heart. Next don’t speculate how others feel. Your Mom may be greiving in her own way. If you are having difficulties and need to talk, there is listings in the Regional directory (skinny phonebook I call it) in the front under the Human Services heading, Walking through Greif Society and AHS Mental Health Clinic, both recommendable.

I must have heard all she had to say, because now she just sang her soft “good night all” song, as I closed the door behind me I said aloud “have a great night Momma”.

For all the hunters out there the 2013 hunting draw applications started June 4th and will be open until June 27th be sure to apply for adventures this fall.

As I was very fortunate last year being successful in three major draws, I will be low on the priority scale for those this year; however I have a high priority on other draws. T h e o l d To l l a n d Store of my childhood was an Imperial Oil dealership.

In those times you would find many diverse products available, coal oil, (kerosene) gas and distillate in fact two grades of tractor gas, low octane for the old low compression engines and the older tractors burnt kerosene. Yeah there just wasn’t any diesel fuel because they hadn’t arrived in any numbers in those times. The road construction equipment and municipal grader were diesels but the average farmer couldn’t afford them in the early times.

Towards the fifties the McCormick Deering W.D.9’s were introduced and the legendary John Deere R. became popular in those times. The fuel economy and power of the diesel engine soon had the whole industry buzzing as everyone tried to get in the action.

Fuel wasn’t as pricy then as it is now but the big old tractors could make short work of a barrel of gas or more in a day. Nowadays a nice model of a tractor or combine of that era would be parked because the gasoline it burned

would make it impractical. Go to an auction sale and watch the auctioneer try to sell a gasoline powered combine for instance.

Spring of 1950 Dad got word from his friend Bill Dyck in Vermilion that they were selling Fordson Major Diesels with a Perkins engine and wondered if he’d be interested. Well Dad suggested maybe his sons would like that, so in we went to learn about diesels. We were eager as young men could be. You have to understand the mystic a diesel tractor would have on tractor crazy boys.

All the advantages and also the pitfalls of the diesel were discussed and all the fears and doubts put to rest. Dad bought a new tractor and elected Elmer and I to drive it home.

I n th os e d ays fu el wa s m os tly obtained in a barrel. There simply weren’t any bulk tanks around. Now a diesels one requirement is that its fuel must be clean. A teaspoon of water in the wrong place would totally wreck things. Fuel in a tank is allowed to settle and one end should be lower so water will go to the lower end away from the end you draw from. So the first thing you needed was a storage tank. I remember Art Lysons delivering fuel and pumping it from barrels into our storage tank so it could safe guard

it’s purity. There were no bulk delivery trucks then either!! There were no cans of starting fluid in those early times and most diesels had a gasoline, pop, motor, which turned the big motor over.

I’m thinking of the John Deer R. and the Caterpillar tractors. The McCormick Deering had spark plugs as well as injectors and you started it on gas and warmed it up first and then shut the gas off and turned on the diesel fuel.

I remember killing my old R one time, working a mile or so from home, and discovering the little motor was out of gas. I can’t remember enjoying the hike home. The main deal with electric start diesels was the huge batteries required to turn it over smartly enough to create the heat to fire the fuel. Dad used to explain the theory of the diesel by showing us how hot the top of a fence post got when you were pounding it.

Try it, you’ll see!! The years went by and the Perkins powered Fordson taught us many lessons about the diesel powered tractor. We learned its limitations and enjoyed its power and economy. We had many diesels since, but the little Perkins was an honest and reliable engine. We learned about diesel fuel when we were threshing the first cold weather, when the fuel turned into a kind of slushy jelly. We soon learned

County Of Vermilion River Lifts Fire Ban County of Vermilion River Release

The County of Vermilion River lifted the partial fire ban effective 3:30 pm, Thursday, June 6th, 2013.

Fire permits issued prior to the implementation of the par tial fire ban on May 6th, 2013 have exceeded the 30 day time period so new fire permits must be obtained prior to any fires being lit. about winter diesel fuel. We learned about fuels filters too, but we learned how to start the engine in cold weather and all the different habits it had. Uncle Herman bought a similar Fordson with the gas engine. It could burn a barrel in a short day. The Perkins on a similar load would work for three. On light work like pulling the binder and seeding it would just sip the fuel.

So now we have huge 4X4’s of hundreds of horse power, powering huge machines and diesel powered combines that make short work of a quarter section with ease. It all became possible with the diesel engine.

Last night, MP Brent Rathgeber resigned from the Conservative caucus, citing the ethics committee’s gutting of his private member’s Bill as a “the last straw”. His proposed Bill C-461 sought public disclosure of expenses and salaries of Federal government bureaucrats and senior CBC employees or managers earning more than $188,000 a year.

Among the amendments passed by the Conservative majority on the committee was an increase of the earnings beyond which disclosure would be required to an astounding $444,661, essentially nullifying the efficacy of the Bill.

While the representative of EdmontonSt. Albert has stated that he supports the government “generally but not unequivocally”, it seems he no longer feels he can, in good conscience, fairly represent the interests of his constituents while sitting in the House as a Member of the Conservative Party. In his words, “the more popular feeling certainly at PMO and

the whip’s office is that caucus members should essentially be cheerleaders for the government and spread the government’s message as opposed to being some sort of legislative check on executive power. I don’t accept their premise.”

What’s this, then? An experienced and dedicated MP stepping away from the pack and openly declaring his reasons for doing so despite the inevitable backlash that is sure to come from his former colleagues?

For career politicians, a move like this has no discernible advantages. Rathgeber is unlikely to be invited to any extravagant Conservative party picnics any time in the near future. Not everyone, however, seems willing to sacrifice personal integrity for political gain.

Here’s a breath of fresh air in what has become over the past months an increasing secretive, stuffy, and unsavoury atmosphere within our Parliamentary system.

Who among us isn’t a little weary at hearing the non-sequitur responses from the Prime Minister and the Conservative party to fair questions posed by the Opposition during Question Period?

Put in the simplest of terms, Rathberger last night tweeted:

“My decision to resign from the CPC Caucus is because of the Government’s lack of commitment to transparency and open government.”

What a brave man is Mr. Rathgeber. What a brave and loud statement his tenured footsteps exiting the roiling sphere of political game-playing in Ottawa do make.

Derek Fildebrandt, Director of the Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation--—an organization that supported the Bill---calls it a “decision of principle.”

The first response issued from the PMO came from communications director, Andrew MacDougall, who said, in a statement resembling an admonition from a stern parent, that Rathgeber, since he had been elected as a Conservative candidate, is now obligated to step down and subject himself to a by-election.

Rathgeber, no slouch when it comes to knowledge of Parliamentary procedure and protocol, issued a quick retort, reminding the spokesman (and the listening public) that any Member of Parliament has the right to resign from his or her current party membership and sit as an Independent or, for that matter, cross

to an opposing party WITHOUT obligation to vacate his or her seat in Parliament.

This is true, according to the rules set out in Section 4 of our Parliamentary Procedures and Practice, which is based on the British Westminster model. The text also states that “entitlement to sit as a Member is not contingent upon political affiliation”.

Perhaps for added educational or karmic value, Rathgeber also cited the example of former Vancouver-Kingsway Liberal MP, David Emerson, who in February 2006 crossed the floor to sit as a Conservative member in the new Harper government. Later, Emerson was appointed as a Conservative Cabinet Minister. So much for the credibility of MacDougall’s admonishment. As one Tweeter commented in response to MacDougall: “Just like David Emerson and Wajid Khan. Karma’s rough. “@PMO_MacDougall: Mr. Rathgeber should resign and run in a by-election.””

And so with one point for “Team Independent Thought and Integrity”, and none for “Team Non-sequitur and Obviously”, the Parliamentary Game continues. Excitement among the populace rises.

and a final vote count held today. The agreement is based on the Memorandum of Understanding that was reached between government and the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) on April 15th.

“We are very pleased that physicians voted in favour of this comprehensive agreement,” said Fred Horne, Minister of Health. “It marks the start of a new longterm relationship with the AMA that will ensure patient-centred care and a strong health system for years to come.”

“The physician vote in favor of the AMA agreement marks their continued commitment to making the health care system better,” said AMA president Dr. Michael Giuffre. “Under the agreement, physicians will have structured ways to contribute our ideas and expertise to improve the health care system.

We will ensure progress continues in the future through cooperative work with our government toward health care innovation and to implementation of our agreements on various programs and physician compensation.”

The seven-year agreement includes: •Zero per cent increases from 201112 to 2013-14, a 2.5 per cent increase in each of 2014-15 and 2015-16, and a Cost of Living Adjustment in 2016-17

and 2017-18; •A one-time lump-sum payment totaling $68 million, to address various financial challenges faced by physician practices; •Creation of a physician compensation committee to oversee compensation practices, including reviewing and adjusting relative payment rates, or fees; •Commitment to an ongoing agreement that reflects the permanency of the relationship between Alberta Health and the AMA; •Arbitration rights on annual percentage increase for fees and specific benefits; •Recognition of the AMA as the ongoing representative of physicians for compensation negotiations; •Commitment for Alberta Health and the AMA to continue to work together on how primary care evolves in the future; •Commitment by Alberta Health to consult with the AMA on a new electronic medical records strategy for physicians; and •Commitment to consult together on other matters outside the agreement, including on opportunities to find efficiencies and savings within the health system.

For people that are sensitive or allergic to wheat, dairy and yeast, here is an artisan bread recipe to try, bean and barley soda bread. It is hearty and full of wonderful flavor. This recipe also happens to be fat free. The addition of bean flour mixed with the grains in this recipe helps to turn the incomplete protein in the grain into a beneficial complete protein.

This is a traditional Irish soda bread recipe that was given to me by a German speaking friend from Italy. She married a man from Ireland, and subsequently learned to make authentic Irish soda bread while living in Ireland, before they settled in Canada. It is bread that is yeast free. It is much quicker to make than yeast breads and cuts very well when it is cool, if you can wait that long. It is also delicious as a warm slice with fresh butter melted into it, and maybe some homemade jam.

It is like a landscape company offering to fix a lawn by fertilizing and seeding new grass.

Another company may suggest removing the top 4” of soil and starting again. It is simply wasteful in my opinion and it’s YOUR money so take some time to get several opinions.

There will be times when replacement is smarter then fixing but those times are not a common as some might think. Don’ t get me wrong, most contractors are honest and are not out to rob their clients. Some times however they go overboard and forget to count the costs.

Many renovators for instance like to do things their own way. This often means they want to destroy the work someone else has done because it does not meet their standards. While this is noble it is sometimes unreasonable and most often un-necessary. If the door is not exactly level but closes perfectly fine there is no need to tear it all out and reposition it. If you are the type of person that absolutely needs everything perfect, then by all means get out your wallet and go at it. For the rest of us we simply need a safe and healthy home that will keep us dry and warm.

Chief Executive Officer, Dave Eremko, is excited about the response the event has received this year. “We are up from roughly 90 participants last year,” said Eremko. He attributes a lot of the tournament’s success to the great support from local businesses.

The proceeds from this golf tournament will be allocated to three worthy regional causes; The Vermilion Splash Park (replacing the wading pool), the Vermilion Curling Club (the purchase of new rocks) and the Mannville Ag Society (for roof repairs to the Rec Centre).

“We have always placed a heavy emphasis on non-profit groups benefitting from the tournament,” said Eremko. To date over $58,000 has been raised for various groups throughout the local region.

The entry fee is $80 per golfer and that includes a cart, prizes and supper.

It is $125 for corporate sponsors which includes all of the above plus a sign.

An autographed Bobby Orr jersey will be up for auction donated by Ducks Unlimited. Two hole-in-one prizes worth $10,000 each will be waiting to be claimed during the event.

The students of Grade One and Grade Two enjoyed a full day of learning and fun at Elk Island National Park on Thursday. The sun shone warmly, the breeze was just strong enough to keep away the mosquitoes, and the pond was full of insects to catch with their nets, to dip, flip, and swish into their examining trays.

Cries of excitement and discovery filled the air throughout the day! Thank you to our volunteers for joining us and helping to make this a special field trip memory.

Congratulations to Nicole Beilech, a grade eleven student, for winning an Alberta Photo Contest through The Environmental Artworks Foundation of Alberta. Contestants were invited to demonstrate through a poster or a digital picture the theme “My World: Air. Water & Land”.

It was a beautiful morning walk to Holy Name Of Jesus Church on Wednes-

day morning as we attended our last Mass for the school year, the last mass for the grade twelve students and our last mass with Father Adam. Thank you to those grade twelve students who did the readings, intentions and brought up the gifts. The elementary students presented Father Adam with a message of how much he will be missed by each of us. Deacon Ken reminded students how each day and in each moment we need to look for Christ. In each other, in the eucharist, and in our daily lives. If we are looking for Him we will find Him. At the end of mass presentations were made to Mrs. Diane Sanson, Deacon Ken, and Father Adam for the spiritual guidance they provide throughout the year through their ministries.

On Friday, May 31st the many of the High School students loaded into busses early in the morning to attend the Annual Spirit Trip to Edmonton. Those students who have shown St. Jerome’s Spirit throughout the year by participating in Spirit Days were eligible to attend.

The students enjoyed a day of bonding and building memories together at West Edmonton Mall.

It was a cool and windy day but students from grade seven to twelve enjoyed a day of playing ball at Pioneer Park on Thursday, June 6. Students from grade 7 & 8 were divided into teams and students from grade 9, 11 &12 were divided into teams. There was lots of friendly competition, water gun fights, and school spirit built during the day. Congratulations to Mr. Sader’s team for winning the Sr. High division and Mr. Whelan’s team winning the Jr. High division.

Kindergarten Graduation is quickly approaching and the students are preparing their presentation for their parents. The Ceremony will be held on both Wednesday, June 19 and Thursday, June 20 for the two different classes and then they will all go on their end of year Field Trip on Friday, June 21. Grade One Orientation will be for a half a day on Tuesday, June 25. Kindergarten Orientation is on Monday, June 24 and Tuesday, June 25.

We should be ending this year with about 12 Mennonite children that attended this program throughout the year. The program was developed together by the parents and the school. This year, the program was offered by a Mennonite facilitator three days a week for

a p p roximately 6 h o u rs p e r we e k.

The grade two class and Mrs. Thompson have enjoyed experimenting with different kinds of boats over the last few weeks. They have put their knowledge of boat designs and their creativity to the test and have created their own floating boats!

Balloon water fight, ring toss, dunk The Spring Fling was organized by tank, face painting, watermelon eating students yet again this year. Two Fridays contest, and show and shine were some of the events. Students who participated earned tickets for a draw; Tanner Adrian in grade 8 won a tablet. After the Spring Fling, students set up for the spring dance which had over 60 students. Jared Herzog won a tablet at the dance.

the grade 6s experienced a simulated typical schedule and timetable of grade 7.

The day featured going from class to class, meeting the teachers of each subject, getting a tour of J.R.’s facilities, and being treated to cafeteria lunch. We hope to see you all back in September!

A Junior High Social Event will be held on Thursday, June 13. Students must be accompanied by their parents for the duration of the evening. If their parents are unable to attend, another student’s parents can ‘adopt’ them for the evening.

Two Twos For Two Siblings At The Alberta Provincial Music Festival Submitted

Two performers recommended from the Vermilion music festival took the number two spot at the Alberta Provincial Music Festival held in Edmonton last week.

Catherine Benoit finished second in the Viola solo class for 16 years and under and Patrick Benoit took second place in the Speech Solo class for 16 years and under.

Catherine performed a four movement concerto composed by Telemann while Patrick retold an eleven minute story by Stephen Leacock called The Dentist and The Gas followed by the poem The Gods of the Copybook Headings by Rudyard Kipling.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted The grade 5 students ventured to Vermilion Provincial Park on the afternoon of May 31. They were met there

by Vermilion Provincial Park guru Mr. Gary Walsh. He took them down to the Vermilion River Reservoir, and talked about the human impact on this wetland, as well as the benefits the wetland brings to our area. After this, the students spent some time gathering some insect samples to look at before returning them to the river. It was exciting to hear what insects were discovered in the wetland, and some students were even treated to a look at a Red-winged Blackbird nest. This trip will greatly help all the students complete their Final Wetland Project. Special thanks to Mr. Walsh and the parent volunteers who came down to the river.

The grade two students spent May 31 at the St. Albert Children’s Festival. They left bright and early so they could make it to their first event, which was participating in stories and songs with the author of Pete the Cat. Everyone had fun dancing, singing and listening to this funny, entertaining author.

Other events they par ticipated in included watching The Little Mermaid and making their own recycled paper.

The parent volunteers made this field trip run smoothly. The students had a fantastic experience.

On June 3, the grade 7 students in JR Robson stayed home so the grade 6 students from VES could take their

places and visit for a one-day trial run. This was a chance for the grade 6 students to check out what JR was all about and to have some of their questions answered. They moved from class to class, learning about the layout of JR, where classrooms were located and who their teachers would be for next year.

The Grade 4 classes travelled to Fort Edmonton on June 4. Students learned about the fur trade and settlement in Alberta. After touring the fort, students made bannock and played aboriginal games. Many students realized how life was way different back then. Hard work and working together in order to survive was important, which didn’t allow much time for play. Some highlights of the trip included: it takes ten people to control a York boat which was very heavy; John Rowand’s house had original items like the chess board; only John Rowand and his family lived in the large house; riding on the steam train was fun; there were small houses that had to fit three families at the fort; making bannock was cool; the top hat was the most expensive item at the trading post; they traded many different furs; the kinds of houses they lived in were different than ours; the colours on the Hudson Bay Company blanket were blue, red, yellow and green which were the same colours as on the Cree medicine wheel. We tip our hats to the parents who came along to help guide groups.

For the 17th year the weather has cooperated to help make the Lions Club CNIB Charity Golf Tournament another success.

Former president of the Vermilion Lions Club, George Matechuk, was on hand at this year’s tournament and though the weather was moody the Texas Scramble got underway without a hitch. “In 17 years we’ve never been rained out,” said Matechuk.

This was good news for the 52 golfers who participated in the event. With lots of prizes up for grabs, 44 hole sponsors, a silent auction and for the first time ever a 50/50 draw, there was plenty of support for this worthy cause.

Committee Chairman of the Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament Cliff Rolheiser is also very happy the rain held off. The club was able to raise $6,000 for the cause.

Local golfers tried on vision impairment goggles at the 8th hole. They mimic conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, catarac ts an d even legal blindness. The golfers were surprised to find that even while wear-

ing the goggles they were still able to hit the “sweet spot.”

This is such a popular sport among people suffering from vision loss that there is an International Blind Golfers Association.

Lloydminster’s 4-H EXPO A Huge Success!

Celebrating 100 Years Of 4-H In Canada Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association Release

4-H Expo for 2013 came to an end June 3rd after the 131st steer left the sale ring.

It was three hectic days of friendly competition, hard work and a lot of 4-H fun.

Expo is one of the largest 4-H Regional shows with 21 clubs participating totaling approximately 400 members and over 390 animals involved. The displays and projects completed were very impressive and well-done. The 4-H’ers displayed tremendous skill and showmanship in the ring and throughout the entire event. Thank you to all of the sponsors, volunteers, calf buyers, 4-H members, and particularly to our major supporter Synergy Credit Union.

Vermilion Interclub Beef Show Trudy McKenzie Reporter

Held May 25th the Vermilion Interclub held their Heifer and Steer show and Conformation. The Conformation Judge was Ernie Gibson who along with Showmanship Judge, Bree Patterson and Ringperson, Cole Goad selected the winners in the following categories.

In the Heifer show the Showmanship Classes included Junior intermediate and Senior with the Junior Champion going to Avary Hickman, and the Junior Reserve achieved by Ashley Jones. The Intermediate Showmanship Champion was Brette

Poliakiwski and Reserve was Austin Axley.

Senior Showmanship Champion was awarded to Amy Chase with Reserve going to Charlotte Wasylik.

There were 12 participants in the Yearling Heifer Class competing for top two placing and the Champion Yearling Heifer was awarded to Avary Hickman with the Reserve Championship achieved being picked up by Brette Poliakiwski.

In the Two Year old and Three Year old Cow/Calf class Justin Chase beat out ten other participants to achieve Grand Champion and Brie Watson pulled the Reserve Champion.

The Overall Female Grand Champion

was achieved by Justin Chase with Brie Watson’s pair taking the Reserve Champion placing.

In the Steer Classes the club was divided into four weight classes and the father son judging team of Bill and Ted Creech selected their top two finishers with the results being; First Weight class 898-1065: Grand Champion, Travis Dow and Reserve Connor Roscoe; Second Weight Class 1070-1160: Grand Champion, Cavin Jones, Reserve Wyatt Roberts; Third Weight Class 1165-1220: Grand Champion, Jesse Axley, Reserve Robert Watson; Fourth Weight Class 12751465: Grand Champion, Alvin Lumley and Reserve Fraser Lumley.

The Overall Grand Champion went to Fraser Lumley with Reserve being achieved

by Robert Watson.

For Showmanship which is focused less on the livestock and more on the performance of the individual 4-H members including how they present themselves, their animal, attention to the judge, control over their livestock and more. The following finished top two; Senior Showmanship; first place was Amy Chase, followed by Sydney Poliakiwski; Intermediate Showmanship first place was Brett Poliakiwski, followed by Austin Axley; and Jr. Showmanship, first place Logan Garnier and Connor Roscoe.

The Vermilion Beef Club held their end of the year conformation show in the early morning May 26th at the Vermilion Agriculture Grounds followed by a banquet lunch where the following awards were presented to this year’s members.

Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef Achievement Day Results Trudy McKenzie Reporter

May 29th the Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef club held their achievement day.

Boasting 22 members the club presented in Minburn before Conformation Judge Tyson Bieleny and Showmanship and Grooming Judge Sarah Saruk.

Starting with the Steer Conformation the Senior’s presented with Kaylie Anderson finishing in 1st place, second place was achieved by Melissa Cannan.

Intermediate first place went to Laramie Anderson second place to Conrad Fowler. In Junior Conformation Courtney Cannan took first placing with Kayle Tod finishing in second.

The Grand Champion Steer was Laramie Anderson’s with the Reserve being achieved by Kaylie Anderson.

Judging for Showmanship was: Senior first was Austyn Fowler, second Jordana Nott, Intermediate first place was Triton Nott followed by Megan Nott, in Junior Showmanship it was Tyson Rudolf placing first followed by Logan Nott in

second.

The Myrnam 4-h club held its yearly Achievement Day on Sunday June 2nd at the Myrnam arena. The members showed 11 steers, 8 yearling heifers, 5 two year old cow/calf pairs and 4 three year old cow/calf pairs as well as one cleaver kidKarsen Trynchuk. The confirmation Judge was Archie Partington and the showmanship/grooming Judge was Austin Partington.

(Right two pictures of Main Street collision) The Vermilion Fire Department cleans up radiator fluid which spilled onto the sidewalk after a lone female driver drove her car into the historic CIBC building on 50th Street at approximately 10:00 a.m. on June 6th.

A second vehicular incident took place on June 7th, resulting in the closure of Railway Ave from the North East and West when an over height tractor trailer took down a guide wire. RCMP and ATCO crews responded immediately, directing the driver to remain in his vehicle until it was confirmed by the ATCO employees that there was no power running through the downed line.

Corporal Gordon Yetman confirmed that no injuries were sustained and that a charge has been laid under the Provincial Traffic Safety Act for operating an over dimensional vehicle on the highway, contrary to the Act. Photo Shannon O’Connor.

Local News Fighting Cancer One Song At A Time Shannon O’Connor Reporter

Vermilion raised singer/songwriter Logan Scheerschmidt’s recent endeavour to donate 100% of the proceeds of his latest country single, 100 Years Young, to the Canadian Cancer Society epitomizes the immortal words of Beethoven who said, “Music can change the world.”

Scheerschmidt is no stranger to the local music scene. He has been in various bands and has been performing live within the Lakeland area since 2009; including headlining Arenafest in Vermilion with his former band Ropeadope (they are currently taking a break).

The song was written in honour of his grandfather whose wife passed away from cancer in 1986. When Scheerschmidt told his 101 year old grandfather that the proceeds from the song were being donated to the Canadian Cancer Society the normally reserved man “cheered up” said Scheerschmidt. “I could tell he really

appreciated it.”

The Canadian Cancer Society also appreciated the gesture. “The ladies in the office were pretty excited because they said no one had done something like this before,” added Scheerschmidt.

It is in its early days yet, but the ultimate goal is to raise $2,500 for breast cancer research. This will be done one song at a time. With each download a $2 donation goes directly to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Scheerschmidt will also be releasing another single in November called 100 Years of Christmas with proceeds going toward the same cause.

New Hours For Vermilion Alberta Works Trudy McKenzie Reporter

Effective June 3rd the posted hours for the Provincial Alberta Works office were reduced. The office hours which originally ran from 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. have now changed to 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The office whose posted services include; Career Counselling, Student Finance, Labour Market Information, East Central Alberta Child and Family Services and Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities

saw their hours slashed following a review.

According to Charles Strachey, Communications Manager the review was initiated after a recent staffing change, “With the current budget challenges we looked at this as an opportunity to review the office and how busy it is and to look for efficiencies.”

Citing the below 3 percent unemployment rate in the area and the fact that less than 9 people a day visit the office it was determined that costs could be reduced by a change in the hours.

Strachey assured that neither services

nor programs would change under the new structure as clients would still have access to the services provided by the Alberta Works office through either appointments in the morning or through afternoon walk-ins.

Addressing the East Central Alberta Child and Family Services and Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities which also operate out of this location Strachey noted, “These services are based on an itinerate basis, which is a fancy way of saying the staff for those programs only come out to this office when they have an

appointment with a client. The staff would have a pass card to the office and would be able to access the office whenever needed to meet with their clients for pre-arranged appointments.”

The new hour structure thus far has been limited to Vermilion, as the hours of operation have not changed in Wainwright or Lloydminster. Strachey explained, “The Visitor count for Vermilion was 162 in May and was 387 for Wainwright, so Wainwright is seeing twice as many people and have twice as many cases.”

Another year for Vermilion Girl Guides has come to a close, and what a year it was! It was so exciting to see all the smiling faces in our organization last fall. The most exhilarating thing for me was the increase in members – we doubled our numbers in almost all our branches (Sparks, Brownies & Guides).

We started the year off with a bang by hosting a Fall Camp Out for the girls – with a Crime Scene Investigation theme. Everyone had fun testing blood splatter, eating watermelon brains, and deciphering finger

kids in Africa, making Fruggles to brighten up the day of a person staying in the hospital, and cleaning up our playgrounds.

Some of us went canoeing in the pool for a Winter Fun Day, learned how to Belly Dance, and discovered all the secrets of making chocolate for a special challenge.

But, even with all that, the highlight of our year was the sleepover at the Vermilion Museum! We arrived and participated in a scavenger hunt around the various gallery areas. We then set up our sleeping bags on the floor, and tried to get some sleep. It was a little scary for some of the girls, as they claimed to be getting stared at by mannequins. After breakfast we headed off to participate in some programming at the Barr Colony Center, then got to let loose while swimming at the Lloydminster pool.

The entire trip was a huge success, and it was especially nice to be able to utilize the wonderful facility in our town. The museum was very accommodating to our group, and we really appreciate the ladies hanging out with us overnight!

May this year boasted a special celebration for Alberta Girl Guides as our organization turned 100 years old. A big Rally was held at the Provincial Park with over 225 people in attendance from our Area, and similar Rally Days were held throughout the province.

ous camps to learn outdoor skills and build confidence in their abilities. Top that off with a Spring Fun Day to learn about the importance of water, an Advancement ceremony for the girls moving up a level, and our year has basically come to a close.

Still to come this summer however, is our much worked for summer trips. Two of our groups have been hard at work raising funds so they could visit different parts of our great country. One group of eight girls and three leaders are heading off to spend a week in Ottawa. We will be visiting many historical spots, a few museums, and will be taking in the Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill! Another group of three girls and a leader are jet setting off to Prince Edward Island to have a week long adventure of their own.

I would like to encourage all girls and women within the Vermilion Area to consider joining Guiding next fall – the more members we have – the more exciting things we can organize as a group. Check out girlguides. com for more information or to register for next fall.

New Business Offers Support For Seniors Trudy McKenzie Reporter

Vermilion has a new business focussed on assisting seniors, offering options and senior supports.

Helping Hands owner Sherri Heller noted that while their business is primarily assisting seniors in relocation the business offers numerous services.

Heller explains that moving seniors is a different process to a typical move. While relocation generally focuses on taking all ones belongings to a new location, for the most part when relocating the elderly downsizing is an important element to the move. Often this reduction in belongings can be riddled with tough choices required by necessity as seniors move from their home to the limited square footage of a lodge or care facility. The move can be an emotional experience and one that is a required event rather than one of choice, often due to health concerns requiring a moving service that is both knowledgeable about what can be taken to the new location and understanding for the client who may be fearful or may not want to move.

They offer innovative strategies to transitioning the client such as creating floor plans to aid in decision making, creating a memory book for items that must be parted with, offer assistance in arrangements for the surplus items, shipping treasured items to loved ones or dispensing items to local charities and offer companionship throughout the process.

Helping Hands not only offers expertise in senior relocation, but also offers aging in place services. The company can review home situations and provide solutions necessary to enable a senior to remain at home as long as possible. Some solutions may include the installation of safety equipment in washrooms and around the home, check in services,

arranging for contracted cleaning, shopping services and more.

Inspired by a service that assisted her when a family member suffering from dementia needed to be moved; Heller explains that Helping Hands will also aid families unable to assist their family during this time of transition. This also includes families needing assistance in packing up the home of a recently lost loved one. Often family members do not have the time necessary to complete this chore at a very emotional time. We can come in after the family has removed the items they wish to hold on to, we can then follow the families wishes in dispersing items including arranging for shipping, auction or donation, having items

How I Survived The Mannville Town Yard Sale Shannon O’Connor Reporter

When I told my friends and family back in Ontario that one of my first assignments as a reporter with the Vermilion Voice was to cover a town wide yard sale in Mannville they were, quite frankly, afraid for me.

I don’t want to brag but I have ”yardsaled” with the best of them. One of the best was my mother. She had yard sale super powers. She could hear a quality item being placed on a table from three miles away. She could spot a yard sale sign while it was still being written

on someone’s kitchen table. She could haggle a Turkish rug merchant down to a fraction of a lira.

Some are born to yard sale and some learn the ropes along the way. I am in the latter category. I patiently watched my mother weed out the good finds from the bad by checking the markings, colour variations, and weight of an object as well as discerning whether a chip or a crack had completely obliterated its value.

I began to go my own way as far as things I liked to pick up at yard sales but applied the same principles. My ultimate game plan also differed from my mother’s because she collected what she loved and

T here wa s excitement in the air at the 4th annual Convoy for Hope as organizer Tom Jack awaited the 50th truck at the Vermilion Weigh Station. Hoping to meet hi s goal for thi s year Jack stood atop his rig watchi ng for nu m b e r 50. He didn’t ride in on a horse but an Ontario trucker driving a white truck arrived at the station at the very last minute.

Jack’s second goal was to break the $100,000 mark in total donations for the Cross Cancer Institute. As they left the weigh scales 50 trucks strong and 5 miles long it looked like this year Jack may meet both goals.

The Convoy for Hope is held every year in honour of Jack’s brother-in-law Tony Rossi who lost his battle with cancer in 2010.

Often the world is turned upside down and inside out and the strongest man is shaken by death of a parent, child, spouse, family member or friend, or a relationship ceases and is broken. A dream dies for the future or a dream of what could have been if their father had been a more positive role model, if there hadn’t been abuse, if their family was still whole and not fragmented.

When these losses are experienced, one is left vulnerable and naked, so to speak.

How can one model strength in the midst of such loss and pain?

The myth of society is that big boys don’t cry and tough it out . That is impossible with a broken heart.

It is known there are different grieving patterns between man and woman and many factors that effect how one grieves bur take heart, there is no one way to grieve nor is there a right or wrong way or specific time to be over grieving. One thing to note that one never needs to stay stuck in grief but there is always good coping skills to learn for the grief journey.

Never be afraid to reach out and learn some skills to help heal healthy and whole.

Don’t stuff your emotions but find a healthy

way to work through your grief. (There is strength in weakness) . Find safe friends who are understanding, read listen and seek out counsellors or a support agency, exercise , run, walk. Self medicating with substances is not a healthy way to numb grief as one still has to face the impact of grief , some times years later.

•find routine in your out of control world that helps one feel more normal from day to day., •Your loss and grief is unique and cannot be compared to anyone else’s . (Your personality, other losses, coping mechanisms, age attitudes, social supports and acceptance of myth of expectations that MAN is strong and without emotions).

•Commit to doing grief work Is grief work hard? Yes it is but worth it , so you can begin the role model as the real MAN and FATHER. A CUT FINGER - Is numb before it bleeds, it bleeds before it hurts, it hurts until it begins to heal, it forms a scab and itches until finally, the scab is gone and a small scar is left where once there was a wound. Grief is the deepest wound you have ever had.

Like a cut finger it goes through stages and leaves a scar. (Doug Manning- Please Don’t Take My Grief Away.)
