Born just May 5th this calf was on its way after being bathed by young Oddan to be combed, curried and prepared for the show. As part of the 4-H program youngsters like Oddan learn by doing which includes working with their calves, caring for them, preparing them for shows and learning how to handle, train and maintain healthy livestock.

Older 4-H members were also hard at work doing similar activities with much larger beef specimen as over the two days May 26th and May 27th members from the heifer and steer show sported their projects from this year and presented their steer projects to local business owners and 4-H supporters for purchase. Scott Encourages Class Of 2013 To Be Part Of The Greater Good Olympian Beckie Scott received an honorary Child and Youth Care diploma and was recognized as one of Lakeland’s distinguished citizens during the Lakeland College Vermilion campus convocation ceremony Friday.

She addressed almost 400 candidates for graduation from applied degree, diploma and certificate programs at the Vermilion campus and online programs during the Vermilion campus ceremony.

People who complete trades apprenticeship technical training and firefighting programs are recognized at ceremonies held throughout the academic year.

Raised in Vermilion, the three-time Olympian won a gold medal in the 5 km pursuit race at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games and a silver medal with teammate Sara Renner in the team sprint event at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

During her convocation address, Scott talked about her early challenges on the World Cup cross-country ski circuit and her decision to not quit, to keep training, and to keep pursuing the podium.

Finally things started to get better –

much better. Results improved and she became a strong contender in the sport.

Prior to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, she was talking to her sport psychologist about a medal finish and asked, “How do I know I can do this? How do I know it can be done?” And he told her she doesn’t know that it can be done. “But you don’t know that you can’t. So take a chance on that. Let’s find out what can’t be done.”

The day of the Olympic race that turned out to be golden, Scott went to the start line focused, prepared and inspired. She crossed the finish line 1/100th of a second before the woman behind her to place third and step onto the podium for Canada.

Later Scott was awarded the silver medal and then the gold medal because the two women who finished ahead of her in the race were caught for using performance enhancing drugs. “I am a Trivial Pursuit question. I am the only athlete that’s had all three Olympic medals in only once race,” says Scott.

A conversation with her mother Jan motivated Scott to publically push for drug-free sport. After complaining about the problems in her sport, her mother told her, “If you know there is a problem and you’re not doing something

to change it or to be a part of the solution, then you’re par t of the problem.”

Scott realized she had a choice to make.

She decided to u s e h e r vo i ce to confront the problem. “Any time I waivered or had doubts…

I came back to my values and what it means to live your life with integrity and to be true to yourself,” she says.

Alberta Biochar Initiative Helps Grow Alberta’s Bioeconomy Lakeland College Sunmitted

More than 80 researchers, business people, government officials and enthusiasts gathered in Vegreville Thursday to celebrate the Alberta Biochar Initiative’s accomplishments over the last year and discuss biochar’s potential to help grow Alberta’s bioeconomy.

Richard Wayken, Vice President of Bio & Industrial Technologies at Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures (AITF), praised the Alberta Biochar Initiative (ABI) for the work its members have done since it was formed 17 months ago.

“The team has made great strides in determining which locally-available feedstocks work best, and in optimizing the two demonstration-scale pyrolysis units that produce biochar,” said Wayken. “Thanks to their efforts, I’m increasingly certain the Alberta Biochar Initiative will contribute to the emergence of a strong bioeconomy in Alberta.”

Mel Mathison, Dean of Environmental Sciences and Applied Research at Lakeland College, was impressed by the level of interest participants showed towards biochar and ABI. “The people who participated in the biochar symposium are highly motivated to see biochar commercialized,” said Mathison, who noted that the event was supported by Natural Sciences and Engi-

neering Research Council of Canada’s Prairies Regional Opportunity Fund. “The researchers, business people and government representatives who gathered here today are eager to advance biochar technologies to a point where Alberta has commercial producers, markets for their products and a supply chain. ABI is the catalyst that will help get us there.”

Biochar, a form of charcoal produced from waste organic materials by heating it in a no- or low-oxygen environment, is viewed by members of the ABI as possessing enormous economic and environmental potential. The versatile material has the potential to be used to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), improve soil quality, increase crop yield, support land reclamation and clean waste water.

ABI is a collaborative effort that involves AITF, Lakeland College and industry partners, with funding provided by Western Economic Diversification Canada (often referred to as “WD”). The initiative is focused on developing and deploying technologies that will enable the largescale commercial deployment of biochar products and biochar applications for the benefit of Albertans. The ABI will help rural-based, small and medium-sized companies and entrepreneurs deliver new, environmentally responsible biochar products from these residues.

The intent is that ABI will grow into a regional network of industries, academia,

Fourth Annual Convoy For Hope Rolls On June 8th Shannon O’Connor Reporter

The fourth annual Convoy for Hope is set to roll on Saturday, June 8th leaving the Vermilion Weigh Scale at 9:30 a.m. and arriving at the Exhibition Centre in Lloydminster at 10:30 a.m.

The event originally started out at the Vermilion Weigh Scale in 2010 and due to the large number of entrants this year “it is back where it started,” said Tom Jack, event organizer.

It has been a goal of Jack’s to see 50 trucks in the convoy and he says they are

on track to not only meet that goal but to possibly exceed it this year. “Fifty plus trucks - that’s four miles,” said Jack who is also known as “Trucker Tom”, in the closeknit trucking community.

The event is held in memory of Tony Rossi, Tom Jack’s brother-in-law who passed away in 2010 from cancer.

“Now in the fourth year people drive or come out to honour their loved ones who have been touched by cancer,” said Jack.

“People call me and tell me their stories.”

A Look At TFWP Trudy McKenzie Editor

This week I had c a u s e to d o s o m e research on the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

I had listened to a recent radio report and I became alarmed hearing the word suspended in reference to this program. Further investigation revealed that the TFWP program itself is not being suspended, but that the accelerated Labour Market Opinion process within the program has been temporarily suspended.

Which is to s ay that em p l oyers can still access workers through the TFWP program, they will however face more scrutiny when it comes to proving they need to hire a foreign worker and ensuring they have first tried to offer the position to Canadian’s, it also means that they must have a plan in place to phase out their temporary workforce.

Along with the suspension of the Accelerated Labour Market Opinion process, a number of reforms have been enacted or are before parliament; many to address the very public abuses recently exposed in the media.

Abuses that have seen larger corporations in the process of outsourcing or sending jobs overseas, using the program to bring their new overseas employees to Canada where under the program they were trained, by the very staff they would be replacing.

Abuses that included hiring practices based on savings, the TFWP program before the proposed reforms permitted a wage flexibility allowing foreign worker to be paid up to 15 percent less

than the minimum wage and abuses that saw hiring criteria put in place that ensured Canadians in the area of employment would not qualify, such as the Chinese mining company in BC that required perspective employees to speak Chinese.

As I investigated fur ther I came across the May 14th presentation of Victor Wong, Executive Director of the Chinese Canadian National Council, at the National Policy Conference in Vancouver BC. Wong explained that the C anadian economy is fragile, that at present there are 1.4 Million C anadians according to the government’s numbers of unemployed across all demographic groups. He stated, “We are in a slump” and that in 2012, there were 338,000 temporary immigrant worker applications approved.

Wo n g s tate d that th e majo rit y of these applicants had gone to Alberta and Saskatchewan where unemployment rates are lower than the national average and where the unemployed to vacancy ratios are lower than what are being seen across Canada. He noted, that a large number were also being approved for urban areas, 34,000 for Vancouver, 64,000 in Toronto.

Disputing Government and Business groups Young said, “Government and Business groups are claiming there is a skills shortage, when in reality there is a job shortage not a skills shortage.” Young called for a moratorium on accepting any further Temporary foreign workers until the economy recovers; the support of a properly run temporary foreign worker program, that addresses real labour shortages, requires a full check for the availability of Canadian workers and offers foreign workers with protections from

exploitation and a path to permanent residency and citizenship.

I confess, as an Albertan it is difficult to quantify these numbers. The thought that we are suffering job shortages when I am working with a company that has been attempting to expand their staff base for the past 4 months now and are struggling heartily to find not only qualified prospects, but prospects who are interested in being employed has been a tremendous struggle.

With regularity I encounter other businesses within our own community verging on desperation as they seek to employ enough staff to keep their doors open. I have witnessed businesses that once pushed for extended hours now closing doors early for lack of staff.

I suppose it is a bit naive to expect that the same climate exists across the country, but I have to wonder if some of these unemployment rates are less about economy and more about choice.

In as much as we are concerned about the protec tion of C anadian jobs, I have to ask from p ersonal experience, are these jobs Canadian’s want? Or are we at the expense of these businesses protecting positions that are unlikely to see any Canadian applicants at all.

I recognize the need to ensure that existing citizens are employed and of course monies earned by Canadian citizens are cer tainly dollars that are spent right here in Canada,

ensuring that our economy comes around full circle. But, at least here in Alberta we are definitely suffering a staffing shortage, a shortage that is unlikely to be addressed by temporary measures.

With our baby boomers continuing to age, not only will we have to replace them in the workforce, but we will have to increase the personnel required to suppor t this aging population, I have heard numbers as high as 3 to 1. Meaning for every 1 person aging out of the workforce, it will take 3 to replace them. There will be 1 to assume the position vacated, 1 to construct facilities of care and 1 to provide supportive care.

I agree with Wong that it makes more sense to find ways to offer these temporary workers a path to permanency. Certainly it would ensure that the staffing shortfall is addressed into the future and that Canadian dollars circulate on Canadian soil, further stimulating the Canadian economy.

I am glad to hear that the TFWP has not been scrapped entirely, that the federal government is actively seeking to improve its model. I would su g ges te d however, that p erhaps much of the concerns about abuses with this program could be addressed were it to become simply a FWP a program designed to assist foreign workers seeking a new country to call home; workers both appreciative of the opportunities available and the ability to perform.

all its glory, the only thing that could make it better would be, sitting along a quite lakeshore, or a peaceful stream where the fish were not biting so one could enjoy all natures’ wonderment.

As I pulled up to the faster paced highway, I watched vehicles flash and couldn’t help but be thankful to be alive and healthy and to have had the opportunity to enjoy this morning and all that I had just seen.

As I write this I have an over whelming urge to go fishing, not necessarily to an action packed hot spot on a crowded lake, but memories of a lonely mountain stream or small hidden lake flash back as clear as watching it on television. It confirms that my urges are not for the fish, I am really the adventure, enjoyment and total peacefulness of enjoying the outdoors.

In my daydreams I picture a small mountain stream where I stood on such a morning as this, not another soul in sight or even a sound from our busy world. I can relive the picture of the morning mist rising off the stream to join the morning sunrise; the only sound the wildlife, nature and the gentle trickle of the stream itself.

The tiny crystal clear stream only a couple feet wide appearing somehow out of the moss and muskeg of the picturesque valley with Alberta’s majestic mountains set perfectly in the background. One could lay on the stream banks and reach as far down as you could and still not touch the stream hidden well below the valley’s normal terrain, I sit on the bank, not getting my feet wet enjoying what surrounds me.

To this day, when I picture heaven… this is it, there was only one down side to this perfect scenario, I tossed a small lure loaded up with a wiggling earth worm that I dug up on the bank.

And with a flash a scrappy brook trout grabbed the lure with such fury it shocked

me, and within seconds I held the pan fry size brook trout in my hands, which glistened in the morning sun. The snow white fin tips glowed and the perfect deep red dots stood out surrounded with a bluish halo, what a beautiful fish, I almost fell into the stream as I reached all that way down to gently release him.

It was horrible as it would not stop…one after the other, I was so busy digging for worms and catching these feisty trout that most of the morning beauty passed me by.

I did stop for a minute to look around when a sound caught my attention, a momma and calf moose stood very close wide eyed wondering what the heck I was doing. I stood and stared back with a nice Brookie lying still in both hands, it was only when the Brookie started to flap around in my hands that I was I reminded of what I was doing.

After letting him slide back into the stream and wiggling myself back up the bank, I knelt there looking for the moose, but they must have had enough of my antics and silently disappeared into the wilderness.

I kept a couple of pan fry sized trout that got a little too aggressive with the lure for my mouth watering lunch and with the exception of having loved ones that have passed…join me, that was truly a piece of heaven.

Learning to Share Franklin Wolters Columnist

I think the hardest lesson we had to learn as kids in those early times, was the joy of sharing. Without that knowledge I’m sure we’d resemble hogs at a trough each scrambling for a bigger share, I’m sure you can see the analogy there. I’ve watched little children go through the throes of learning when sibling or other youngster wants to share toys. Seems everyone wants the same toy no matter what or how many others are present to play with. That’s a hard lesson some of us had to endure and many Mothers have torn their hair out to show the beauty of sharing!!

We all sat around the table and dishes of food were passed around. When a dish came to your place you needed to judge how many people had yet to be served and how much was left in the dish. You just NEVER took more than you should so everyone had some at least. You learned to share. That went for everything on the table, any candy bar or brick of ice cream was divided up into however many were present. The person doing the cutting got last pick of pieces just to keep things even.

In my childhood oranges were scarce and I don’t remember ever having a whole one until I was a teenager or older. Whenever a goody came along we kids always looked out for the others to make sure they got a share. That was a family motto. It does my heart good to see tykes gathering candy at the fair parade and the older kids gathering candy and sharing the spoils with the

smaller kids, making sure they get some too. It’s also very disgruntling to see older kids taking advantage, and not sharing, a way of the world you think?

We see our politicians who have somehow developed this entitlement to think they are entitled to more than their fair share. Any which way you can imagine people came to develop this idea their needs entitle them to a bigger share. Even on our roads, it seems there are people not willing to share. In Nova Scotia I saw signs along the road saying “Be Courteous Share the Road”. We are for the most part a sharing generous lot and charities like the food bank and such help so many.

Mom used to quote the scripture and talk about casting your bread upon the water and it will be returned to you multiplied by sevens. I know the feeling I had when it came lunch time and you had no lunch, it was so special to have a friend or anyone share theirs with you. Sharing anything is not a natural tendency, it has to be learned right from infancy. It really is a hard lesson to learn and it’s so wonderful to see young children get the spirit of sharing.

In early times when the country was just beginning to be settled, the earlier settlers were after helping the newcomers and in many cases made the difference of staying or being forced to leave. In my early times I remember sharing straw piles and feed with neighbours who were short. We always had extra potatoes for seed most springs, and my Mom shared her perennial flowers and shrubs with who ever came by.

Work bees to saw wood, do the calves, and even put up hay and of course harvest, you really did share your time and efforts. In this world there certainly seems to be such

I stand reading the reviews and accolades about the author printed on the back of the book, knowing that the words will have little bearing on my decision. I will buy this book, along with two others, promising as I do that I will give away three of the books now occupying space on my shelves. It’s an unwritten rule for me: if something new is accumulated, then something existing must be transferred to a new owner. I have no aspiration of becoming a hoarder of possessions, even treasured ones. Excess is excess.

My purchase finalized, I shift into the cue with the many others awaiting the chance to say hello to the author. Of course, he will sign the books too; that’s what authors do.

I’ve read most of the short stories in the collection, “Island”, published in 2000. At home, I know that another, earlier collection, “The Lost Salt Gift of Blood”, rests on the livingroom bookshelf.

It was required reading in some long ago Canadian Lit course. I’ve read most of the stories before, but this acquisition feels different. I’m hoping, you see, that when I re-read these words I will be able to find his voice within the pages.

His voice. Alistair MacLeod speaks slowly and very quietly. It’s as though he thinks through every phrase before speaking. He takes his time. He doesn’t say it but I know that he takes great care in getting right what he expresses in language. Here is a giant in the literary world, yet he has published a mere six volumes. And one of these includes stories already published in two of the other collections! At 76, it’s doubtful that MacLeod’s goal is to have ten or fifteen in this lifetime. His life’s work epitomizes the Quality over Quantity approach. His is the kind of writing borne of diligence and precision. Every line is exquisite, deliberate.

I listen to Shelagh Rogers as she prompts him during a live taping of CBC’s “The Next Chapter” to tell us about himself, from where it is he comes, of the adventures he has endured over the span of his 76 years spent in Saskatchewan, Indiana, Ontario, and Cape Breton, and how it feels to know that he is one of the most celebrated literary people Canada has known.

Wait. Maybe you don’t know him yet.

No matter. There’s still plenty of time for discovery. My advice is this: take the opportunity to find one of his works in the library. If you cannot invest the time it takes to read his novel, “No Great Mischief”, then check out one of his short story collections. You will see what you’ve been missing and you will be glad that you are missing out no more.

MacLeod speaks eloquently about the nature of geography, how the landscape of our origin affects us and shapes various key aspects of our lives. He speaks about the effect that geography has on writers----on everyone----and how each of us carries the influence of our early experience of geography for a lifetime. In essence, who we are is deeply affected by where it is we originate.

During his talk, MacLeod speaks of Canada and the diversity of its landscape.

He claims that all literature is based on some kind of worry, and the national worry uniting Canadians is Winter! We shift in our seats and laugh, knowing all too well the truth of his words.

For all of his literary accomplishments, Alistair MacLeod remains personable, inclusive, and humourous, his manner one of humility and quiet comfort. Of his writing, he tells us that, “Everything I write is an offering to the readers so that they can come along and take what they like.”

When I get to the front of the line, he greets me, then writes in one of my books, “wishing you all good things”. Having the opportunity to listen to the voice of Alistair MacLeod telling any kind of story can surely be considered one of those very good things.

This recipe makes very large lasagna that will serve 12 people. If that is too much, lasagna is great for leftovers the next day, or you can freeze some for later. This recipe could also be cut in half. I use 1 1 / 4 pounds of ground pork and 1 1 / 4 pounds of ground beef and moose. Mixing the ground pork with the ground beef adds a juicy layer of flavor. If you are intolerant to wheat, there are now brown rice lasagne noodles, and if you are allergic or sensitive to dairy, you can easily leave out the chesses and still have a fantastic meal. Lasagna is an ancient dish that came to Rome from Greece. It quickly spread across Europe and even to England, and eventually to North America. This Italian favorite has lasted many centuries, and has numerous variations, such as the addition of red wine in certain regions of Italy or the use of a béchamel cream sauce instead of the mozzarella cheese or the spinach cheese layer.

Lasagna Filling 2.5 pounds of ground meat 2 onions 4 cloves of garlic 1 28 oz can of tomatoes 2 5.5 ounce cans of tomato paste 2 carrots, graded or finely chopped 2 stalks of celery finely chopped 1 / 4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2-3 teaspoons salt – to taste 3 / 4 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon sea salt

2 teaspoon oregano 2 teaspoon basil 1 teaspoon thyme 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1 / 4 teaspoon dill 1 cup water Cheese Layer 2 cups ricotta or 2% cottage cheese (500 ml) 2 eggs 1 / 2 teaspoon salt 300 ml package frozen spinach or fresh spinach Oven ready lasagna noodles Mozzarella cheese In a large skillet or Dutch oven brown the meat, I often do this in two parts because of the amount of meat. Once the ground meat is browned add the onions garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, vegetables and spices. Add the cup of water if you are using the oven ready lasagne noodles, as they require more moisture. Simmer to allow the flavors to blend. To create the spinach and cheese layer, combine the cottage cheese, eggs, spinach and salt.

Stir to blend the ingredients. Pour 1 / 3 of the meat mixture into the bottom of a 10 x 14 baking pan and spread it evenly, add a layer of noodles, then add another 1 / 3 of the meat mixture and spread it evenly.

Cover this meat layer with the spinach and cheese mixture, another layer of noodles, the remaining 1 / 3 of the meat mixture, and then top with sliced mozzarella cheese. Bake covered with foil at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Allow to set for 15 minutes before cutting. If you use the type of lasagne noodles that have to be boiled before hand, then omit the 1 cup of water and decrease the oven time to 30 minutes.

St. Jerome School News Margaret McCormack Submitted

On Friday, May 24, 2013, the Grade 7 class attended Fort Edmonton. This trip was to gain further knowledge and real life examples of the Fur Trade, which they have covered in their Social Studies class. The students toured through the time periods of 1846-1920s. Buildings, people and films were all used to allow the students the opportunity to get a-hands on perspective of what life was like during these time frames. A favorite highlight was viewing the 4D film called Northern Lights: The Building of Edmonton. The students were guided through the fort and faced challenges that the people would have faced during this time. This was a wonderful experience and one the students will never forget!

From May 26 - 28, 14 St. Jerome’s students and 2 advisers travelled to Strathcona High School in Edmonton to attend the annual Alberta Association of Student Councils and Advisers leadership conference. Students were able to participate in three days of keynote speakers, workshops and spirit activities as they worked on expanding their leadership skills, and networked with other high school leaders from across the province. Keynote speakers included Tyler Durman, Alvin Law, Jann Arden, Phil Boyte and “Ace Ventura” director Tom Shadyac. It was a great three days highlighted by meeting many new friends, dancing the night away on Monday and discovering many new ideas to bring back to St. Jerome’s.

Cooking and kitchen safety has been the focus of the VIBE grade five program, “Cooking with Crystal”. Over the past six weeks the thirty-two grade five students have been learning a variety of skills in the kitchen. They had the opportunity to prepare a simple breakfast, lunch and snacks during the program. Preparing supper for their parents was the culminating activity. Students stayed afterschool to prepare the meal of salad, veggie tray, hamburger/pasta casserole, chicken/ pasta casserole, watermelon, popcorn cake, and punch. They set up tables and chairs and decorated placemats for their special guest. It was a delicious meal and there was even leftovers to take home.

Thanks to VIBE coach Crystal, VIBE coordinator Pat, Ms. Noel and Mrs. McCormack for helping the students.

Lorraine Serhienko, a Lakeland College Agriculture Instructor spoke to Mrs. Gnyra and Mrs. Roth’s class on May 27. She discussed many aspects of farming, shared her pictures and brought in samples of grains and straws. Her topic focused on crop production and cattle. Each student received an agriculture workbook. Thank you Ms. Serhienko for sharing this information.

In the afternoon of May 28th students were given the opportunity to attend The Personal Safety Course, which was put on in partnership between VIBE and Battle River Victim Services. Cpl. Michael Bourguignong of the Wainwright R.C.M.P. Detachment visited St. Jerome’s to provide training in some basic but potentially life saving techniques to grade 11 and 12 girls in a proactive attempt to better equip students to defend themselves in a life threatening

situation of a criminal nature. The students who were paired up with a peer to practice practiced physical demonstrations.

Sean Earle attended Zones for Track and Field on Wednesday, May 28, in Lloydminster to participate in two events.

Congratulations to Sean who won gold in the Sr. Boys Javelin. He threw 43.87 m. Sean will be traveling to Provincials in Calgary on June 7th and 8th to represent St. Jerome’s and our zone. All the best, Sean!

The Grade ten students have been finishing up their courses over the past week and a half, as they become college students for the next three weeks. They began their three college programs, welding, mechanics, and carpentry on Monday, June 3rd.

A Junior High Social Event will be held on Thursday, June 13. Students must be accompanied by their parents for the duration of the evening. If their parents are unable to attend, another student’s parents can ‘adopt’ them for the evening.

J. R. track and field athletes have been applying all their skills from Mrs. McNeill’s P.E. class and Miss Felt’s 4-days-a-week practices into competitions lately. All junior high Marauders were out in the field on Friday, May 24 for our annual school track meet. Then they were back out there when J.R. hosted the Buffalo Trail District finals; hundreds of junior high students were amidst our concourse, and field! Many MANY thanks go to Mrs. Hart for making sure the all-day cafeteria served a variety of hot food to athletes and students. Several senior high P.E. students were also out there and manning the various events.

On May 29, the senior high Zone track and field meet was held in Lloydminster.

On May 29th the Library held a program called ‘Lets Talk Science’.

Graduate students from the University of Alberta, Adam Lahonyai and Katie Kinaschuk presented to grade one classes from St Jerome’s and Vermilion Elementary School, and one grade two class from St Jerome’s.

Providing hands on and interactive lessons on plants and animals the pair inspired youngsters to think about plant development and growth and what is needed to by plants by way of water, nutrients and care and the different ways animals protect themselves.

A busy weekend for the Vermilion 4-H Beef Club who held their Achievement Day May 26th in the morning then participated that afternoon in the Heifer portion of the Vermilion 4-H Beef Interclub show. The following day they once again prepped their livestock for the 4-H Beef Interclub show and sale.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigewitch Submitted Our kindergarten class enjoyed the tour of the Mannville Co-op on Tuesday, May 28. Mrs. Cheryl Jory gave the kinderkids a behind –thescenes look at how the Co-op grocery store works. The kids enjoyed stocking the milk cooler and pricing meat for the meat counter.

Other highlights of the tour included meeting the Pepsi delivery crew, riding on the lift, watching the box crusher and shrink wrapping Mrs. Tod! The Co-op generously donated a box of ice cream treats for the kinderkids to enjoy in the afternoon. Thank you Mrs. Jory for the amazing tour!

What a VERY busy week it has been with Track and Field meets.

Our Senior high team travelled to Lloydminster for district track and field on May 21st.

Congratulations to Kristen Baker—3rd place medal Shot Put and Carter Myhovich- 3rd place medal javelin. The remainder of the team put forth a great effort and placed in the middle of the pack in their events: Donavan Amero,

Triple jump and long jump, Tanner Gausvik—100 meter, Emma Jackson- Triple jump, Chelsea Baker- javelin and Brandan Lyster- 1500m.

Thank you to all these athletes for being ambassadors for our school.

Fourteen junior high athletes travelled to Vermilion to take part in the BTJHAA Track and Field Northerns: Sam Rutt-Javelin and long jump, Lucas Amero-100 meter, Nelson Shubert -triple jump,Carter Babij- shot put and discus, Caitlin Hanch- Javelin, Makenna Koniecznytriple jump, 200 mBreanne Hryhirchuk- discus and javelin, Payton Bell- long jump, Amanda Baker- 200m. Dana Melnyk-discus, 100m and long jump, Marty Jackson-Hurdles, high jump and triple jump, Kastyn Konieczny-400 m and triple jump, Chelsea Zapisocky-1500 m and 200m, and Kenzie Smith-shot put and javelin.

Good luck to our junior high students who qualified to go to Paradise Valley on June 4th.

Elementary takes their turn at track and field. The students’ union (grade six class) have planned a mini track and field afternoon on Wednesday, June 5th.

The last early dismissal of the school year is

Please remember the extra swimming date that our grade 1, 2, 5, 6 classes received. They will be swimming on Thursday, June 6th. Grade 1 and 2 swim at 11:00 and grade 5 and 6 at 12:00.

Mannville School will be having a Bottle Drive and Penny Drive on Thursday, June 6.

Students and staff will be going around town door to door starting at 6:00 pm.

We are raising funds for Mannville School Athletics. The money raised helps to offset the costs associated with athletics. This would include travel costs, registration fees, and officials.

Outreach Scholarship Derek Collins Submitted The annual Vermilion Outreach School scholarship, sponsored by the Vermilion Youth Justice Committee, was presented to Paige Burton and Amber Neil. The award is presented to two students of the Vermilion Outreach School who have experienced success in school. Both students received $250 to be used toward their further education. Paige Burton has been attending Vermilion Outreach School to complete her high school diploma and pursue a career in nursing. She has been very dedicated to her studies consistently attending every day.

Paige also contributes to the school by being

active in mentoring a young student at Vermilion Elementary School. Paige is a supportive friend to others in the building as well. Amber Neil has returned to school this year and brings a quiet but very determined attitude to her work.

Amber quietly comes to school and immediately begins to work. Amber also is involved in the school’s community activities and helps in her visits to the Lodge, Vermilion Elementary Hot Lunch program and other activities. She is also very supportive and helps other students in the building in many areas. Amber was attended the Rotary Leadership Camp this spring. Both these young ladies are excellent examples of how Vermilion Outreach School provides an opportunity for students to achieve success.

In the Steer class it was a 1, 2 finish for the Anderson family as sisters Laramie Anderson took Grand Champion and Kaylie Anderson’s steer pulled Reserve Champion.

Weighing in at 1442 pounds the Grand Champion achieved a price of $2.30 lb. from Blue Sky Dodge out of Vegreville.

The Reserve Champion will be heading to Vermilion Packers who purchased the 1448 pound steer for $2.20 lb.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted On May 22, Science in Motion spent the day at VES, setting up in both the gym and the library.

The grade three classes got to classify minerals, using the terrific samples brought

by SIM. Grade four got to see light broken up into a spectrum using lasers and prisms, and used 3-D glasses to learn how our eyes see colour. The grade fives became emergency response teams to test “hazardous” substances. Grade six classes threw boomerangs and flying cylinders, and watched classmates get “shrink-wrapped” while learning about air and flight. We offer many thanks to Dan and Bernadette for bringing such a great day of science to VES. VES staff and students would like to thank all the parents, families, and community members who came out to support our annual VES Community Breakfast on May 24. We would also like to thank the nine EST (Emergency Service Technician) students

who helped with the setup, serving, and take down. This breakfast was a very well attended event (serving 333 people), with the proceeds going to the Lunch Program in our school.

The Vermilion Elementary School Lunch Program would like to thank the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation for their generous charitable contribution in the amount of $5,000 in support of our hot lunch program. Because of that donation, VES designated May 30, as “Oilers Hockey Day”. On that day Brandon Baddock, past student of VES and current Edmonton Oil Kings player, joined us to help serve lunch.

The noon hour was dedicated to the sport of hockey with games being played and fans cheering on the sidelines with homemade Oilers paraphernalia. Staff and students showed their support for the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, and to hockey in general by wearing jerseys to school that day.

VES celebrated our Roots of Empathy program. This baby visit was a little different since all babies could walk around (with a

little help from mom) as the grade 2 students sang their hello song. Baby Carsen, was all smiles. He ate a piece of cake (for the first time). They are pretty sure he liked it. Baby Teagan, our oldest baby, is an experienced cake eater. She had some practice at her one year birthday party a few weeks ago. Baby Maelle, enjoyed her cake as well. She sat still and ate the whole piece. Roots of Empathy is a program that allows students to observe the positive loving connection between parents and children. Students learn that everyone is unique and has different needs and abilities. By discussing the baby’s emotions and reactions, students learn empathy. Through stories, art, and baby visits students develop an understanding of their own thoughts and feelings. Thank you to all our Roots families,

FCSS, and BTPS for supporting this valuable program.

Children’s Hospital Foundation receives $550,000; Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation in Calgary, $825,000; Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton, $825,000; Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan, $1.7 million; and The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, $1.1 million. The money was divided using a formula developed by FCL to allocate fairly region-wide gifts of this nature, and was agreed to by all parties. The money to the Saskatchewan and Manitoba foundations is in addition to money already raised from Co-op/Rider and Co-op/Bomber “Game Day Approved” co-branded products.

In response, the five Children’s Hospital Foundations thanked FCL and retail Co-ops for their generosity. Teri Nicholas, President and CEO, B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation, said, “FCL and retail Co-ops’ support for our Foundation will have a direct impact on children and families in every community in British Columbia.”

Saifa Koonar, President and CEO, Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, said, “FCL and retail Co-ops’ generosity will make a tremendous difference for the 82,000 children and families who need our hospital every year.”

Mike House, President and CEO, Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton, said, “We appreciate FCL and retail Co-ops’ support of medical excellence at the Stollery, and commitment to patient care for children and families who need it most.”

Brynn Boback-Lane, President and CEO, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan, said, “The support from FCL and retail Co-ops is a game changer that will allow the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan to get one step closer to bringing a children’s hospital to the province.”

Lawrence Prout, President and CEO, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, said, “Thanks to FCL and retail Co-ops’ generous support, we will be able to fund important care and research initiatives that will lead to brighter and healthier futures for all children in our province.”

During the ceremony, children and parents shared their personal stories and experiences with their local children’s hospital and foundations. Parents Karen Calhoun of Edmonton, Vince Fowler of Calgary, and Erin Vipond of Victoria, along with 12-year old Nadya Keenan of Saskatoon and 10-year old Kasen Andrusko of Winnipeg also thanked FCL, its employees, members and customers for their support of the five Children’s Hospital Foundations.

Communities In Bloom Spurs Planting Bug Trudy McKenzie Reporter May 25th Spurs at Lakeland College was the location for gardening enthusiasts. The wet and chilly weather early in the day encouraged even more gardeners to participate last minute. The day provided a number of key speakers an afternoon tea, lunch and a group planting session.

Lakeland College’s rich horticultural history was the focus of first presenter C a thy Wo l te r s , w h o s e p re s e n t ation focussed on the history of Lakeland Colleges grounds and horticulture program, the different contributions made to the college and the college

grounds by the groundskeepers through out the years. She shared with the assembled some of the many stories she had uncovered while exploring the schools yearbooks and histories along with numerous photos from the schools history.

Fiona McLeod from the Lakeland College interior design program shared her design expertise, applying those same principles to the creation of a desirable outdoor environment. Quoting Katherine Anne Porter, McLeod opened her presentation expressing, “Human life itself may be pure chaos, but the work of the artist is to take these handfuls of confusion and disparate things, things that seem irreconcilable, and put them together in a frame to give them

some kind of shape and meaning.”

Track And Field At J. R. Robson Trudy McKenzie Reporter

Track and field season is in full swing and as each of the local schools begin to host their individual track and field day students are stretching and experiencing personal bests in the sport.

Hosting their annual school track meet on May 21st, both junior and senior high J. R. Robson athletes found themselves at the mercy of the weather, but this did not inhibit the efforts of the students and perhaps even spurred them on as at least three of the athletes achieved personal bests and broke school records for this event. Cassidy Stepanick achieved a record in Long Jump, Jake Winichuk reached new heights posting

a 1.74 m in Hi-Jump and Thomas Broadben broke an existing Triple Jump record.

May 28th J. R. Robson hosted the Northern District Track and Field competitions with teams arriving from; St. Jerome, Lloydminster, Mannville, Innisfree, E. H. Walters, Kitscoty, Marwayne, Dewberry and Clandonald. Several event records were broken through the day; Lisa Hames from Mannville Broke theU13 girl’s High jump record from 2007 with a jump of 1.41 meters, Shayla White from St. Jerome’s broke the U13 girl’s Long jump record with a jump of 4.32 m, Maya Gabrielson from E. H. Walter (Paradise Valley) broke the U14 girl’s High jump with 1.46 m although 4 girl’s broke the U14 long jump record it was Kelly Grieg of Marwayne who achieved the record of 4.34 m, Maya

Robson broke the 14+ girls record for Long jump measuring a 4.64 m jump, Jessica Kingston of St. Jerome broke the 14+ Triple Jump with 9.62 m and Ashton Oakes from Kitscoty broke the 14+ 200m with 26.9 second run.

Donovan Yaceyko from J. R. Robson broke the 14+ boys High Jump record with 1.71 m and achieved the 14+ Shot put record with an 11.58 m throw, Jake McCormack from St. Jerome broke the 14+ Triple jump record at 11.66 m.

The previous week members of the J. R. Robson Senior Track and Field team progressed to the May 29th Zone Competitions in Lloydminster where Alexis Neuman,

Beaudon Rogers, Chad Andreychuk, Shanna Gould, Grace Kinley, Wilson Quon, Tim Yaceyko, and David McKimmon vied for a spot at the Calgary Provincials to be held June 7th and 8th. Two of the team members did qualify for Calgary; Grace Kinley who placed first in discus measuring a distance of 27.19 m Kinley also placed 2nd with 9.08 m in shot put. Beaudon Rogers qualified for provincials with 2nd place measurement of 10.97 in shot put. Shanna Gould posted a respectable 3rd and 4th in her events just missing the Provincial challenge, while the remainder of the team did their personal Bests and worked very hard despite the distraction of being in the middle of a mini funnel cloud.

2013 Soccer Season Underway Geraldine Collins, Communications Director, VSA Submitted

Despite a late start, the Vermilion soccer season is well under way. The number of registered players climbed substantially this year, with a total of 258 participants ranging in age from 3 to 17 years old.

On May 11th, the Vermilion Soccer Association hosted its annual 3 on 3 tournament for U8, U10 and U12 players. This tournament provides the kids with an early opportunity to get on the fields and become familiar with some of their teammates, and enjoy a lot of ball contact and playing time.

A sunny day of soccer was enjoyed by all 93 players, which included 2 teams from Sherwood Park!

Our U6 and U8 Mini Tournament and U10 Spring Classic took place on May 25th and 26th, respectively, and saw nearrecord participation. Teams from Vermilion, Vegreville/Mundare, Wainwright, Two Hills, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Viking, Lac La Biche and Elk Point all took part over the weekend. In total, 47 teams with 532 players participated. Complements from visiting teams were plentiful, and Lakeland District Soccer Association President Erin Jubinville commended our club on the tremendous organization of the event.

The Outdoor Soccer Season is fast and furious, and we are now heading into June.
