WALTER MYTZ

Walter Mytz passed away Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Mannville Care Center in Mannville, AB at the age of 92 surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his loving wife Hazel in 2023. He will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Wayne (Donna) Mytz of Mannville, Murray (Bonnie) Mytz of Neilburg, Brian (Amanda) Mytz of Mannville & Marilyn (Kirby) Demas of Mannville, 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Walter was the second oldest of four siblings: Fred (Joyce), Jenny (Bill) & Michael.

Walter Mytz, also known as Ladoch on his birth certificate was born August 16, 1933, in the Salteaux District to Mike and Matrona Mytz, who came from the Ukraine in 1926 and 1929 respectively. Walter grew up on the family farm. He learned hard work and responsibility early on doing chores and hard manual labor on the farm. Walter’s love for the farm led him to eventually take over the homestead quarter.

Walter and Hazel met at a Preston school dance and their love blossomed from there. On July 3, 1965, Walter and Hazel were married at the Vermilion United Church. They moved to the old farm yard, started out with 2 quarters of land, a few pigs and some cows and both worked side-by-side building it to what it is today.

Dad was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was doing some dirt work or picking rocks that needed to be done with his 1850, fixing or running equipment, driving grain trucks, moving from fields, he did it all! He somehow found time to help everyone and made many memories along the way. He was always trying to improve field efficiency and making equipment he could build or fix just about anything and he always had a trick up his sleeve. He passed on a lifetime of knowledge to all of us. He loved making improvements to the land, especially if it involved burning brush or sloughs, you could say he was a bit of a fire bug! Walter was famous for his shoulder shrug or his little smirk and sticking his tongue out if something went wrong or he made a mistake. We will sure miss being able to stop by the house for a game of crib, a visit, watching a hockey, ball or curling game, or just some farming advice! In the last couple of years, he did slow down a bit, but you could always see him out checking on the progress of the fields, making sure things were getting done the way he thought they should be. Once a farmer, always a farmer! We have many fond memories of our camping and fishing trips, as well some great crib games, & beanbag competitions! He could rock his Oakley shades into his 80’s, he thought Hank, Johnny and Conway are legends compared to all the music today, he believed his 1850 Cockshutt Tractor was better than any new John Deere, and that scaling bins is just an every day duty and that farming is the best way to build a life full of love and happiness! What a way to make memories we will cherish forever.

Walter’s celebration of life was held on September 20, 2025. We would like to thank the Viking Hospital, doctors, & nurses for the care they provided to Walter before he was transferred to Mannville Care Center. Thank you to Mannville Home Care & Mannville Care Center for the care they provided. Thank you to Dwight Rokosh for doing the funeral service; Howard Brown for doing the graveside service; Creeches for looking after all the funeral details. Thank you to David for videotaping; Kim for doing the slideshow tribute; Justin and Lane for the eulogy; Justin, Braden, Ryan, Lane, Kade, & Cole for being pallbearers. Thank you to the people who brought squares to the service & who helped out in numerous ways. A special thank you to Linda & Lora for helping prepare food for the funeral; Elaine Pocock, Lori Harder, & Taryn Smart for serving in the kitchen. Thank you to all the family, friends, & neighbors for all the cards, flowers, food baskets, & visits. Words alone cannot express our gratitude to all of you.

The County of Vermilion River is seeking 3 Members-at-Large and 2 Alternate Members to serve on the Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (the “ISDAB”).

What is the Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board?

The Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board is an independent, quasijudicial board that hears appeals related to subdivision and development decisions from the City of Lloydminster, County of Vermilion River, Town of Vermilion, Village of Kitscoty, Village of Mannville, Village of Paradise Valley and the Village of Marwayne. The ISDAB does not create planning policies or bylaws – the role of the ISDAB is to ensure decisions of the Subdivision or Development Authority are fair, impartial, and follow the County of Vermilion River Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw regulations, as well as applicable provincial legislation.

What does an SDAB member do?

ISDAB members are required to attend appeal hearings when they are filed (meetings are scheduled as needed). During the hearing, the ISDAB members must listen to all sides of the appeal and review any evidence presented. The ISDAB members will make impartial decisions based on the regulations of the County of Vermilion River Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB), the Alberta Municipal Government Act and any other applicable provincial and municipal legislation. The ISDAB members will deliberate privately and provide written decisions to the Appellant. ISDAB members are required to maintain confidentiality and fairness throughout the entire process.

Training Mandatory training is provided at no cost to ensure ISDAB members understand their responsibilities and applicable legislation.

Term ISDAB members are appointed for a term of 3 years, with the option for reappointment.

Who can apply?

County of Vermilion River residents with an interest in planning or development. No prior experience is required – just a commitment to fairness and good judgement.
