The Dangers of Smoking

How Does Smoking Affect your Body ? By Sebastian Grecu

Your lungs can be very badly affected by smoking. Coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma are just the start. Smoking can cause fatal diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer. Smoking causes 84% of deaths from lung cancer, and 83% of deaths from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). How many people die from smoking? Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. What chemicals do cigarettes contain? Cigarettes have nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, which is a deadly poison, arsenic, a substance used in rat poison and ammonia, used for cleaning windows. The effects of tobacco smoke on the respiratory system include irritation of the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box). Reduced lung function and breathlessness are due to swelling and narrowing of the lung airways, and excess mucus in the lung passages. Cigarettes are very bad for your body. Statistics show us that 50% of people who smoke, will die of cancer or diseases that affect the respiratory system.

WARNING!!! This Article Contains Toxic Information. By: Catinca Beltechi Sometimes you wonder how a small cigarette, drink or drug can harm you, right? You wonder what is being harmed and and why. Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body with its deadly chemicals, and part of this group includes drugs and alcohol. Smoking reduces your life, causing many diseases. Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add to your life. Mixing alcohol and other drugs together can lead to serious physical, behavioural and health complications, and not only can drinking and drugs increase the effects of each substance, it can also trigger dangerous interactions. Cigarette smoke contains several carcinogens (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue) that alert biochemical (relating to the chemical processes and substances which occur within living organisms) defence systems leading to lung cancer. Depending on the amount of alcohol and type of drug consumed, you can experience an array of harmful side effects. Since alcohol is a depressant, mixing it with another drug can be detrimental (tending to cause harm) for your health. Next time you wonder about these stuff just remember, it is toxic and very dangerous and, be careful with what choices you make.

"Cigarettes Contain Toilet Cleaner?!" EWWW! By Dinu Petre Did you know that a cigarette contains toilet cleaner (ammonia) and sewer gas (methane)? Well, that’s exactly why you shouldn’t smoke. I understand it is soooo relieving when you smoke, but an insecticide inside the cigar forces your brain to send pleasurable messages to the body. On the inside, your lungs, teeth and fingers will turn yellow and your blood vessels will have several blocks because of another bad chemical used for cleaning toilets, and it’s called ammonia. I know it sounds yucky, and for real now, it really is!!! Also, here’s a fun fact: Smokers die 10 - 15 years before non - smokers. This happens because of the other banned insecticide and radioactive elements inside the cigarettes and believe it or not, that is 100%, 10 out of 10, totally, so true! Unfortunately, smokers dump this information, and then realize is true when they die, but that doesn’t mean that they pass the information onto the next generation…

Always say "No!" to Smoking -->

BONES Smoking make your bones weak and you can break your bones. SKIN It can make your skin grey. After 10 or 20 years smoking, it can make your skin wrinkly around eyes and mouth, three times more than likely. It can’t happen if you stop. It is hard to stop smoking but here are some tricks. You can stop with word START. S= set a day when you're going to stop smoking. T=tell your friends and family that you are going to stop. A=anitcipate with challenges you will face with. R= remove cigarettes from your house, work or car. T= talk to a doctor to get help about it. If this doesn’t work than take less and less, for example if you today smoke 5 cigarettes tomorrow take 4. Don’t smoke because is not healthy. Stay healthy!

The Nervous System

How to Heal Your Nerves By: Miles Baran - Candrea

Did you know that if it wasn't for your nervous system, your body wouldn't move? The nervous system is a complex bundle of nerves and cells. There are two parts in the nervous system. The Central Nervous System includes the brain and spine, and the Peripheral Nervous System is made of nerve fibres, that expand from the spine to the rest of your body. Fun facts: the human brain has more than 100 billion nerve cells called neurons. Some functions are called involuntary meaning you don't control them, for example, breathing. Some steps to heal your nerves. Sleep helps the central nervous system work properly. Studies have shown that the sun reduces the risk of health conditions. Meditating is a smart way of smoothing your nerves Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is bad for your body. Exercise helps the nerves function.

Pain Tolerance By: Valeria Turcan Imagine it took you 5 minutes to solve a math problem ,and every 2 seconds you would receive static energy in your hands, would it take more or less time to finish this task? It might be obvious to some people that it would take longer because the pain would constantly distract you, but it actually depends on each person’s level of pain tolerance. It all falls into 4 categories: some people just aren’t disrupted by the pain too much, others work faster and better due to the adrenaline rush, part of the rest just sometimes let their minds wander as a way to tolerate it, and the remainder of people might even contract mental disorders and/or trauma because of too much pain. Physical pain can be described by a sharp pain (like being struck by a dart), dull (like being hit by a brick) and aching (like a broken bone), but what exactly makes people and animals feel pain? When you get hurt, special nerve cells called nociceptors send signals to the cortex, a part at the top of your brain that will decide what to do about the pain. First, it must detect where the pain is coming from, for example, if you accidentally scratch your arm on a tree branch, what makes you pull away from the tree? Special types of nerves on the surface of your skin called sensory nerves work together with the muscles to quickly jerk away from or dodge anything that might hurt your body. This whole process happens in the fraction of a second. Sensory nerves exist so that when something dangerous gets near you, they can act so fast that nociceptors don’t even have time to send any signal to your brain.

Year 6's Healthy Breakfast Event A Short Recount On the early frosty morning of Wednesday, the 11th of December, Year 6 students from Vertita International School eagerly awaited the arrival of their parents. They had spent weeks organising an event that would serve as a healthy reminder to all, about the benefits of eating good food for breakfast. Only this time, they were the ones preparing, cooking, and serving the food, which meant it was the parents who would enjoy the results! It began chaotically, as one would expect with 18 children in a kitchen. They had assigned jobs and knew how to carry out their roles with little confusion. However, unforeseen problems began to bubble on the surface. A fatal error was overlooked. Power. Cooking devices could not function without heat, and we were stone cold. There were many mouths to feed, and hot coffee was an absolute necessity for our hard-working parents, especially at 9am in the morning. With the help of many hands we managed to find a power source to heat our coffee and grill those waffles. Thank you to everyone who came to join in the fun! We hope you had a healthy start to the day. Miss Harlace

The daily food you eat could contain some unwanted ingredients that if you eat too much of it could even kill you! You may not know this but some of the food you eat contains sugar, salt and nuts which are bad for you. If you are allergic to nuts, these are the ingredients that could send you to the hospital if consumed too much. Junk food has this way of hooking you to eat it. Mass producers of this type of products make it taste good, with some of the ingredients above use them because they taste good so people will eat them. These are some type of places that serve junk food, fast food, malls, shops and online websites.

How to Stay Healthy By: Stefan Stroie First you need to think positive and stay calm. Do not panic that you are unhealthy. Next, try to put your target as 5 portions of vegetables. After you eat a minimum of 1 portion of vegetables, go for a 5 mile run and only drink water. Next for lunch you are going to eat a bunless burger without mayonnaise and with boiled potatoes. After you finished eating, you need to drink a 1 litre water bottle. If you ate the whole burger, you need to run for 1 mile again. Keep this up until you lose weight or you feel more healthy.

Food for Thought & Thought for Food by Maia Neghina

Do you ever think about the food you eat? What food should you eat? There are lots of categories of healthy food, so let’s start with the first one: fruits and berries, apples are high in fiber and vitamin C, avocados, everybody knows they are healthy, but how exactly are they healthy? They contain potassium and other healthy fats, bananas are high in vitamin B6, blueberries are full of antioxidants which makes them incredibly healthy, oranges contain tons of vitamin C, strawberries have magnesium and fiber. These fruits are the healthiest but all fruits are healthy. Nuts and seeds are also super healthy. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, chia seeds contain magnesium and calcium, coconut has fiber and walnuts are full of very important minerals. Vegetables are healthy, but which are the healthiest? Asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers. Fish and seafood, wild salmon is one of the healthiest fish on earth containing omega-3 and vitamin D, shrimp has selenium and vitamin B12 and tuna is full of protein just like chicken. Some grains are also very healthy, brown rice is full of B1 and oats are a great source of nutrients. These foods are super healthy for you and your body, but you may wonder why they are so healthy? They are healthy because they contain nutrients that are compounds and they are vital for disease prevention, growth and good health in general, protein that creates cells, bones, skin and hair, carbohydrates that fuel the body, fats that help the body use the vitamins it gets from food, vitamins that are very important for your body and for preventing diseases and minerals that are essential for the body and help build bones and teeth. These foods are also healthy when you combine them. You could try warm lamb salad, roasted vegetables and fruit salad with honey yogurt sauce. From now on you should think about what food you eat and how to combine foods to healthy recipes.

Can you play video games and still be healthy at the same time? By : Victor Fillip First, obviously you need to eat healthy. The healthy foods are cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and fish. Then you need to drink healthy, which is to drink smoothies and kale juice. Bad things that video games can do to you is that they can make you obsessed with video games and can even not go to school or work anymore. And they can make you not eat healthy anymore. I want to demonstrate that video games and healthy things can be balanced. How you can balance the two things which are video games and healthy? You can balance them by eating healthy and drinking healthy. I think the healthiest smoothie is with ginger, avocado and banana. The healthiest foods are fruits and vegetables.
