M

arch – one of the best months of the year in Verbier: great skiing, BBQ’s emerging from under the dust covers with longer evenings for some springtime après-ski fun.

March is also the month when Verbier welcomes the last stage of the Freeride World Tour - the renowned Verbier Xtreme. Swiss snowboarder Andre Sommer recalls taking part in the event last year and tells us about his experience on the earlier stages of the tour this year.

Six of Europe’s best female freeriders represent the girls in this edition of Verbier Life. The established group of riders have joined forces to make a new all girls ski movie. Photographer Yves Garneau captured some great shots of the ladies making the most of the local terrain when they visited Verbier on their tour of the Alps. (Yves also took the photo of the Chocolate Brownie on page 46 – if that doesn’t tempt you to find a mixing bowl and get baking, then I’m not sure what will…)

Our website Verbierlife.com is getting thousands of hits each month – if you haven’t checked out the snow report videos then it’s worth a look. If you’re unable make it up on the mountain, then take a quick look at the footage from the headcam - it’s almost like being up the mountain yourself.

Well…not quite, but it is worth checking out. We are also busy updating the site with the latest news and what’s on in Verbier. ars est sans aucun doute l’un des meilleurs mois de l’année pour se trouver à Verbier : les conditions de ski sont superbes, et avec les journées qui rallongent, les BBQ quittent leurs housses protectrices et viennent agrémenter le plaisir des après-ski printaniers! C’est également en mars que Verbier accueille l’Xtreme de Verbier, une compétition de grand renom qui clôture en effet le « Freeride World Tour ». Le snowboardeur Suisse Andre Sommer, qui a participé à l’événement l’an dernier, nous raconte les expériences qu’il a vécues durant les premières étapes du circuit de cette année.

Dans cette édition de Verbier Life, six des meilleures freerideuses d’Europe ne manquent pas de faire honneur au genre féminin. Ces rideuses talentueuses se sont réunies dans le but de produire un film de ski dans lequel on ne retrouvera que des filles. Le photographe Yves Garneau a su croquer de beaux clichés de ces skieuses en action, lors de leur passage à Verbier durant leur tour des Alpes. Yves est également responsable de la photo du dessert Brownie au chocolat illustré à la page 46 – si cette dernière ne réussit pas à vous mettre l’eau à la bouche et ne vous incite pas à mettre la main à la pâte, alors je me demande bien ce qui réussira à le faire…

Notre site Web (Verbierlife.com) reçoit des milliers de visites par mois. Pour les personnes qui désirent rester bien informées, nos vidéos hebdomadaires des conditions d’enneigement valent vraiment la peine d’être visionnées. Et si vous ne pouvez pas vous rendre en montagne, nos clips filmés à partir de notre « headcam » sauront sûrement vous donner l’impression d’y être vous-même. Bon…pas tout à fait, mais ça vaut quand même la peine d’y jeter un coup d’œil ! Notre site est mis à jour régulièrement : vous y trouverez les toutes dernières nouvelles ainsi que les événements se déroulant à Verbier. LE ROUGE 24 HOUR CHARITY PARTY A HUGE thank you to everybody who made our Russki Revolution 24hr DJ Mix such a success. Some 500 fancy dressed party animals passed through our doors during this event, many of them dancing until midday on Wednesday. Our objective was to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières, who are actively helping the victims of Haiti to rebuild their lives. Our target is 5’000CHF and we still have a way to go at just under 1000CHF so far! JEWELLERY DESIGNER Like many people living in Verbier, Ski instructor Emma Louise Cairns is not only qualified in one profession. Emma also designs and makes jewellery and has set up a brand known as ‘BonBijou’, which specialises in the design and production of handmade statement pieces, using exquisite semi-precious gemstones. “The unique collections have a vintage style which creates individuality and poise for the wearer”, comments Emma. FINAL STAGE OF THE FREERIDE WORLD TOUR – THE NISSAN XTREME VERBIER March 20th The world’s best ski and snowboard freeriders gather in Verbier this month to take part in the famous Nissan Xtreme Verbier. The event will be held on the impressive north face of the Bec des Rosses, which features an over 50° gradient in certain parts. Thousands of spectators will once again gather on the Col des Gentianes to watch the spectacular event. The weekend attractions are not however just up on the mountain, the event creates an exciting atmosphere throughout Verbier with plenty to keep you entertained in town over the weekend. 40e ANNIVERSAIRE DU FARM CLUB Le Farm Club fêtera ses 40 ans l’an prochain. Pour souligner cette occasion, Kings désire recueillir des photos et des anecdotes pour retracer les 40 années d’existence de cet établissement de renom. SKI CLUB VERBIER Over the years, Ski Club Verbier has produced some of the big names in the world of skiing, like Raymond Fellay and Phillippe Roux. Now, new stars such as Ami Oreiller and Christophe Roux are arising. This younger generation of teenagers and children are training and competing hard throughout the year, carrying the name of Verbier far outside the boarders of Val de Bagnes. Amongst his many other achievements, Christophe Roux has competed as a skier for the Moldavian team in the Olympic Games. And last year, Ami Oreiller was twice in the top 10 in the European Cup, 8 times on the podium at the FIS, and won two bronze medals in the Swiss Elite Championships. This winter season she also participated in her first World Cup in Sölden. Thanks to the trainers’ past years’ efforts, (among them Yves Thiébaud, current holder of the Swiss speed ski record of 239km/h) the up and coming ski team is now harvesting the fruit from their hard work: a multitude of medals have been won at many competitions this year by this dynamic ski club of youngsters!

The Club has two sections: the ‘fun club’, counting 35 children aged 7 and up which takes a fun approach to learning whilst enjoying the mountain, and the ‘competition group’, where students develop their race technique and competition skills by training at least twice a week and everyday during their holidays.

There are 6 competitions held around the valley during the winter season and local competitions every weekend in Verbier. For Théo, Arthur, Grégoire, Carl, Valentin, Ken, Robin, Carlo, Gaétan, Alicia, Fanny, and Annika, the gifted skiers who have been selected, the next step is to ski for Valais, and then hopefully go on to the national team…

SKI CLUB VERBIER Au fil des années, Ski Club Verbier a produit quelques grands noms dans le monde du ski, tels que Raymond Fellay et Philippe Roux. À présent, de nouveaux athlètes prometteurs voient le jour comme Ami Oreiller et Christophe Roux. Cette nouvelle génération de skieurs s’entraîne de manière continue et prend part à de nombreuses compétitions tout au long de l’année, répandant le nom de Verbier bien au-delà des frontières du Val de Bagnes.

Parmi ses nombreux accomplissements, Christophe Roux a représenté la Moldavie aux Jeux Olympiques. Ami Oreiller, quant à elle, s’est placée deux fois parmi les dix premières à la Coupe Européenne, l’an dernier. Elle est montée huit fois sur le podium de la FIS et a gagné deux médailles de bronze aux championnats Elite Suisse.

Cet hiver, elle a également participé à la Coupe du Monde à Sölden pour la toute première fois.

Grâce au support des entraîneurs au cours des dernières années (parmi eux Yves Thiébaud, détenteur actuel du record de ski de vitesse pour la Suisse à 239 km/h), cette équipe de ski montante commence à récolter le fruit de ses efforts. En effet, les jeunes de ce club de ski dynamique ont remporté une multitude de médailles lors des diverses compétitions qui ont eu lieu cette année.

Ski Club Verbier se compose de deux volets : le « fun club », qui compte 35 enfants âgés de sept ans et plus, et où apprendre est synonyme d’avoir du plaisir en montagne, et le « groupe de compétition » où les participants développent leurs techniques de course et peaufinent leurs habiletés de compétition. Ces jeunes s’entraînent au moins deux fois par semaine et tous les jours durant leurs vacances. Au cours de la saison d’hiver, six compétitions prennent place à divers endroits dans les vallées avoisinantes, en plus des compétitions locales qui ont lieu tous les week-ends à Verbier. Pour les skieurs talentueux qui ont été sélectionnés : Théo, Arthur, Grégoire, Carl, Valentin, Ken, Robin, Carlo, Gaétan, Alicia, Fanny et Annika, la prochaine étape consiste à skier à l’échelle valaisanne, en espérant poursuivre leur formation en tant que membres de l’équipe nationale… Si vous désirez faire partie du fan club et voulez suivre les progrès de ces jeunes skieurs de Verbier, allez sur www.skiclubverbier.ch

SPEED RIDING CONTEST This new contest will combine the best of both riding and film making.

The event will take place over three days and include five runs down different routes in the Val de Bagnes. The teams will have to work together choosing the most challenging lines, while making sure they tackle them with a fluid, confident style. The footage filmed during the descents will then be edited, shown and judged on the evening of Friday March 12th at Médran.

CONCOURS DE « SPEED RIDING » Ce nouveau concours vise à combiner le meilleur du ride et de la cinématographie. Cet événement se déroulera sur trois jours et sera composé de cinq descentes, chacune empruntant un itinéraire différent dans le Val de Bagnes. Les équipes devront travailler ensemble pour trouver les lignes les plus exigeantes tout en s’assurant de les affronter avec un style agressif et fluide. Les descentes filmées seront par la suite éditées et finalement jugées à Médran, dans la soirée du vendredi 12 mars.

DA FAT This year the ‘Da Fat’ celebrates its 5th edition on Sunday, March 7th.

Initially organised by Adrenaline and Hardcore, the mythical Verbier Derby has grown in popularity each year, and is now included on the European Tour of Derbys. The concept of the event remains the same as per the previous years, where a group of eager riders meet up on the morning of the event before being directed to the secret location of the event. From there, small groups of 10 to 20 riders (ski, snowboard, monoski, télémark...) will attempt to be the first to reach the bottom of the run.

This year from 10am, DJ’s will be playing in the snow park at La Chaux, where there will be a snow bar, freestyle demos, and you will be able to test a selection of skis, snowboards and telemark skis for free. For more information or to sign up for the event go to www.enky.ch

DA FAT Le 7 mars prochain, le « Da Fat » célébrera sa 5e édition. Ce mythique derby de Verbier, initialement organisé par Adrénaline et Hardcore, a vu sa popularité croître au fil des ans, et comme résultat, il fait maintenant partie du Circuit européen des derbys. Le concept de cet événement demeure néanmoins inchangé : un groupe avide de rideurs se donnent rendez-vous le matin de la compétition pour ensuite être dirigé vers l’emplacement secret où se déroule cette dernière. De là, les compétiteurs s’élancent en petits groupes de dix à vingt riders (ski, snowboard, monoski, télémark...), chacun tentant d’être le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée au bas de la piste.

Cette année, dès 10 h, des Djs mixeront au snow park à La Chaux. Vous y trouverez également un « bar des neiges », des démonstrations de freestyle, et vous aurez la chance de faire l’essai gratuitement d’une sélection de skis, snowboards et skis de télémark. SUCCESS FOR LOCAL BAND After forming in the Autumn of 2009, Verbier’s newest band, 'Halfway Homebuoy', has entered Britain's largest band competition: 'Live and unsigned'. The band auditioned on the 7th of February in The Journal Tyne Theatre and has qualified to the regional finals which will take place in the Tyne Theatre on the 14th of March.

The competition, which plays host to 10,000 competitors nationwide, consists of four knockout stages (including the qualification round) ultimately climaxing in London's O2 arena. For anyone wishing to find out more about the competition, visit www.liveandunsigned.uk.com, or for free tickets to the regional final in Newcastle, you can contact the band on their Facebook group 'Halfway Homebuoy'. The boys will be playing at the Wonderbar on March 21st.

SUCCÈS POUR UN GROUPE LOCAL « Halfway Homebuoy », la toute nouvelle formation de Verbier qui a vu le jour à automne 2009, vient de s’inscrire à la plus grande compétition pour groupes intitulée « Live and unsigned » qui se tiendra en Angleterre. WHAT'S ON

VERBIER GRAVITY SHOW This month, Verbier welcomes the 1st edition of the “Verbier Gravity Show”. Taking place from March 10th to the 14th, this brand new event will surely seduce the public thanks to its rich and varied palette of aerial demonstrations. The event is made up of two parts: firstly, a speed riding competition in teams of two, where the camera equipped members will make the most of the terrain found throughout the Val de Bagnes while filming all the action. The public will then be invited to join the ‘Chicken Party’ on Friday the 12th from 4pm at Médran, where the short films recounting their adventures will be screened. Secondly, on Saturday the 13th from 11am, a fantastic aerial meeting will take place on the Carrefour plateau, with Sunday as a reserve day in case of bad weather.

The day’s programme will include parachuting, base jumping and ‘swift’ demonstrations, as well as many other surprises.

ustrian freeskier Sandra Lahnsteiner came up with the ambitious idea of producing an”all-girls ski movie” in spring 2009 and invited six of the best female freeskiers from all over the Alps to be part of this unique project.

Laura Bohleber, local freeskier from Verbier: Giulia Monego, the experienced Italian athlete from Cortina, who has chosen Verbier as her second home spot; Lori Huber, from Lech, Austria, competitor in the Freeride World Tour 2010; Melissa Presslaber from the Eastern Tyrol in Austria; Pia Widmesser, a 25 year old, ambitious German freeride athlete and Sandy herself, who got into freeriding after winning a freeride competition and participating in the Austrian freeride movie “Made in Austria”, released in autumn 2009.

As the girls didn’t know each other before they started the project, they decided to invite each other to their home resorts: Verbier, Lech/Arlberg, Gastein, Cortina, Hochfügen and the Eastern Tyrol. In the movie, they start their journey as strangers and end up being friends; a trip that takes them to the best snow and backcountry terrain in the Alps. The women explore the myth, legends, people and history of their home spots and, along the way, share their passions, experiences and stories – both joyful and painful – revealing how they became the skiers they are today.

Cinematographer Mathias Bergmann, ‘sweetshots’, follows the girls on their trip through the Alps, accompanied by Kenny Cowburn who filmed along the way. Photographer Mirja Geh shows the girls at their best at the first team meeting in Fieberbrunn, combining the power of an extreme sport with the femininity and elegance of being girls.

Local photographer Yves Garneau joined the girls during the first stop of their road trip in Verbier, at the beginning of January 2010. Luckily the

Les skieuses explorent le mythe, les légendes, les personnages et l’histoire de leurs stations respectives et partagent au passage leurs passions, leurs expériences et leurs histoires, tristes ou joyeuses, nous révélant comment elles sont devenues les skieuses qu’elles sont aujourd’hui.

Le directeur de la photographie Mathias « sweetshots » Bergmann a suivit les filles pendant leur voyage à travers les Alpes, accompagné de Kenny Cowburn qui a aussi fait des prises de vues. La photographe Mirja Geh a su mettre en valeur les filles lors de leur première rencontre à Fieberbrunn, en combinant la puissance d’un sport extrême avec la féminité et l’élégance des skieuses.

One of the pioneers of modern ski photography, Marko started his career over 40 years ago, capturing the first wave of ski bums who flocked to Verbier.

Marco used a macro lens to zoom in on the delicate individual flakes and crystal formations in this collection entitled ‘Still Water’.

“Mother Nature is the most creative artist on the planet. Nothing comes close to the diversity she achieves during all four seasons of her art”, comments Marco. “I carry a macro lens with me at all times - when I fall upon one of these masterpieces on a river bed, car window or plant I stop and document Mother Nature's Art”.

ou could argue that Swiss rider Andre Sommer leads the dream ‘ski bum’ life. For the last ten years Andre has spent the winter season living in Verbier and the summer months searching for more snow in his impressive converted bus in his wife’s homeland of Argentina. Alongside the ‘ski-bum’ life style Andre is part owner of Altitude Ski and Snowboard School and has competed in the Freeride World Tour. Andre shares his memories of the FWT and the Verbier Xtreme last year and his experiences on the tour this year.

HOW WAS THE FWT LAST YEAR? Last season was great, I was part of the FWT for the second time. That kept me away from home quite a bit, it was kind of hard as the snow conditions in Verbier were epic most of the time.

But I can’t complain, it was really good fun, I met lots of nice people and old mates. I competed in Russia (Sochi), USA (Squaw Valley), France (Tignes) and finished in Nendaz getting a wild card for the Verbier Xtreme.

I was happy to finish my season coming down the Bec des Rosses safely!

To celebrate we had a big BBQ at my place with friends and FWT riders.

Argentinean beef and music, couldn’t have been any better…

HOW HAS THIS SEASON GONE FOR YOU SO FAR? At first my plan for the season was to ride lots and just do some filming and photo shoots. I didn’t really want to do any competitions – then the FWT organization called and invited me to take part in the first two stages of the tour in Sochi, Russia and Chamonix –so I decided to go for it. We arrived in Sochi in mid January to really bad conditions, half of the resort was green and warm. Straight after that it started dumping snow and it just kept on falling… It was super sketchy and we even had a few avalanches in the forest.

We had a total of four hours of sunshine the whole week, so the competition was cancelled. We had some good riding though…

Chamonix followed with its huge mountains. Again we had to wait for the weather to give as a break, when it finally cleared conditions were optimal, at least that’s what we thought. The day of the comp was freezing! I was the 10th rider to go down. Soon after Raphy Gillioz (5th rider) was going down, we heard on the radio that he had an accident. (Wish you a fast recovery Raphy!). So we had to wait for 30 minutes, it was hard to keep warm and focused. At that point they informed us that most of the steep sections were icy, as the powder hadn’t stuck to them. I had to adjust my line at the last

COMMENT S’EST PASSÉ LE FREERIDE WORLD TOUR L’ANNÉE DERNIÈRE ?

La saison passée s’est bien déroulée, j’ai participé au World Tour pour la deuxième fois. Ca m’a obligé à être souvent loin de chez moi, ce qui a été un peu difficile vu que les conditions de neige ont été exceptionnelles à Verbier la plupart du temps.

Mais je ne peux pas me plaindre, j’ai eu énormément de plaisir, j’ai rencontré beaucoup de gens sympas et retrouvé d’anciens copains. J’ai participé aux épreuves en Russie (Sochi), aux USA (Squaw Valley), en France (Tignes) et j’ai fini à Nendaz, où j’ai obtenu mon ticket d’entrée pour l’Xtreme de Verbier.

J’ai été content de terminer ma saison en descendant sain et sauf le Bec Des Rosses ! Nous avons fait la fête et un grand barbecue chez moi avec des amis et des riders du Freeride World Tour. Du bœuf argentin et de la musique, on n’aurait pas pu faire mieux …

COMMENT SE PASSE TA SAISON ACTUELLE ?

Mon plan initial était de rider un maximum et de faire quelques sessions photos et des films – je ne souhaitais pas spécialement participer à des compétitions – jusqu’au jour où les organisateurs du Freeride World Tour m’ont appelé pour m’inviter à participer aux deux premières étapes, à Sochi en Russie et à Chamonix. J’ai donc décidé de me lancer. Nous sommes arrivés à Sochi à la mijanvier, dans des conditions vraiment très mauvaises, la moitié de la station était encore verte et il faisait chaud. Juste après ça, il s’est mis à neiger abondamment sans interruption …C’était super délicat et nous avons même eu quelques avalanches en forêt. Nous n’avons eu en tout que 4 heures de soleil pendant toute la semaine, la compétition a donc été annulée. Mais nous avons pu faire du bon ski quand même …

Nous avons ensuite enchaîné avec Chamonix et ses gigantesques montagnes.

minute and just go for it. I didn’t feel great coming down, I hit some ice at the top and had an unstable line in general. I was not proud of my show, but that’s how it goes, sometimes you do well and sometimes you don’t, it’s all part of it.

HOW IS THE ATMOSPHERE ON THE TOUR? For sure the FWT is a competition, but in general I would say a freerider is a free-spirit person who likes to be out in nature, doesn’ t mind a party and smiles a lot. You wish each other a good run and a safe descent, and for yourself, you hope that the judges like your riding a bit more than they like your friends’ (ha, ha.)

YOU TRAVEL A LOT WHEN YOU’RE NOT IN VERBIER, WHERE DID YOU GO LAST YEAR? At the end of last season we went on a road trip to Baqueira in the Spanish Pyrenees. It was a ten hour drive with almost no stops, it was worth it, we had amazing snow conditions; they said the best in 10 years, total chaos in the streets with over a metre of snow. We went heliskiing a bunch of times, every flight we could just choose our line and the heli would drop us as wished. That was unreal!

Then it was summer and time to migrate to the south for some more snow.

The Argentina winter was lots of fun as usual; finally one of my biggest dreams came true - we got two snowmobiles from the USA, and that was us sorted! No need for ski resorts, chair lifts or queues. We would just park the bus somewhere and let the adventure begin. We had lots of amazing days with friends and family, and I also did a pretty full-on production for Movistar (phone company) where we had to film a five-episode commercial with helis, snowmobiles and good riders. That was fun for sure!

IT SOUNDS LIKE QUITE A LIFE… Snowboarding is my life, I love the ski bum spirit and lifestyle. I like to take life easy and spend time with friends and family. I’m excited about the rest of the season and year and have lots of interesting projects coming up.

Nous avons à nouveau dû attendre que la météo s’améliore, et quand nous avons enfin eu droit à des éclaircies, les conditions étaient optimales, c’est du moins ce que nous pensions.

Il faisait très froid le jour de la compétition, j’avais le dossard numéro 10. Juste après le départ de Raphy Gillioz (le 5ème à descendre), nous avons entendu à la radio qu’il avait eu un accident (bon rétablissement Raphy !). Nous avons donc dû attendre 30 minutes. C’était difficile de rester concentré et réchauffé. A ce moment, ils nous ont annoncé que la plupart des sections raides était glacées, car la neige fraîche n’avait pas pu s’y accrocher. J’ai donc dû modifier ma ligne au dernier moment avant de me lancer. Je n’ai pas eu une bonne impression en descendant, j’ai touché de la glace dans la partie haute, et ma ligne n’était pas très fluide. Je n’étais pas très fier de ce que j’ai montré, mais c’est la vie, parfois vous assurez, d’autres fois non, ça fait partie du jeu.

COMMENT EST L’AMBIANCE DANS LE CIRCUIT ?

C’est clair que le Freeride World Tour est une compétition, mais en général, je dirais qu’un freerider est une personne à l’esprit libre, qui aime être en plein air, ne dit pas non à une fête et sourit souvent. Nous nous souhaitons tous une bonne descente, sans accident, mais vous espérez quand même que les juges auront une petite préférence pour votre descente plutôt que celle de vos copains (ha, ha.)

TU VOYAGES BEAUCOUP QUAND TU N’ES PAS À VERBIER, OÙ ES-TU ALLÉ L’ANNÉE PASSÉE ?

A la fin de la saison passée, nous avons fait un road trip à Baqueira, dans les Pyrénées espagnoles. Nous avons roulé presque dix heures non stop pour y aller, mais ça valait vraiment la peine, nous avons eu des conditions de neige exceptionnelles, les meilleures depuis 10 ans d’après les indigènes. Les routes étaient complètement bloquées avec plus d’un mètre de neige. Nous avons fait plusieurs fois de l’héliski, et pour chaque vol nous n’avions qu’à choisir notre descente et l’hélicoptère nous déposait selon nos désirs. C’était complètement incroyable !

Ensuite, l’été est arrivé et le temps est venu de migrer vers le sud pour trouver encore de la neige.

L’hiver en Argentine a été comme d’habitude un excellent moment. Enfin, un de mes plus grands rêves s’est réalisé ! Nous avons fait venir 2 motoneiges des USA. Plus besoin de stations de ski, de télésièges, de files d’attente. Nous parquions le bus quelque part et en route pour l’aventure !

Nous avons passé des jours épiques en famille et avec des amis, et j’ai aussi eu l’occasion de faire une production sérieuse pour Movistar (companie de téléphone), pour laquelle nous avons tourné une publicité en cinq épisodes, avec des hélicoptères, des motoneiges et de bons riders. Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir !

TA VIE A L’AIR PASSIONNANTE …

Le Snowboard est toute ma vie, j’adore l’esprit et le mode de vie du ski bum.

J’adore prendre la vie avec calme, et passer du temps avec mes amis et ma famille.

Je me réjouis du reste de la saison et de l’année, et j’ai plusieurs projets intéressants qui se profilent à l’horizon.

WHAT IS A TRIGGER POINT? To put it simply, a trigger point is a knot in a muscle that causes pain. This pain is often related to a pain in another part of the body and not necessarily where the trigger point is located.

There are approximately 400 muscles in the human body and any of these can develop a ‘myofascial trigger point’. The symptoms of myofascial pain can vary depending on the location and severity of the problem and can be manifested by a deep ache which can be either constant or intermittent. It is usually aggravated by the use of the affected muscle or muscle group.

WHERE DO TRIGGER POINTS COME FROM? The most common reasons are injury or trauma to the muscle, or chronic over use causing muscle damage or dysfunction. Overload occurs when the muscle is being used in an improper way, causing stress on the muscle fibres.

These muscles will often respond by developing trigger points.

HARD TO BELIEVE, ISN`T IT? That tiny little knots in your muscles can be responsible for so many kinds of trouble. An amazing number of our common aches and pains and a variety of other puzzling physical symptoms, have been found to be caused by myofascial trigger points. In fact they have been proven (Dr J.Travell and D.Simons research) to be a primary cause of pain in roughly 75% of every pain problem.

Features of trigger points - Trigger points are tender when pressed firmly and have tight bands which can be felt in the body of the muscle.

- When the tight bands are pressed firmly or plucked they usually cause a muscle twitch and an involuntary cry of pain.

- The affected muscle will have a restricted range of movement and will be weaker than normal.

- Trigger points in a muscle will make the muscle shorter than normal.

- Trigger points have a typical pattern of pain referral.

Treatment of trigger points - What do you do when a muscle hurts or feels tight? You rub it, of course!

It is nature`s cure. Rubbing is exactly what works for trigger points, provided that you rub in the right place. In principle trigger points need to be stimulated to be cured. The stimulation may be done in one of many different ways, a selection of these are: - trigger point massage - using firm pressure with a hard object such as golf ball, - simple stretching of the affected muscle group, - injection of a local anesthetic, - application of hot and cold packs to the muscles.

- acupuncture.

It is often too painful to be able to stretch the muscle to any meaningful degree. This is when acupuncture becomes vital in the rehabilitation of a trigger point problem. It is believed that acupuncture is the best treatment, for the simple reason that trigger points are caused by the hypersensitivity of a specific set of pain nerves. In traditional Chinese medicine or acupuncture, these trigger points are called Ah-shi points, literally meaning "ouch" when pressed firmly. Normally if one goes to see a western doctor who has studied acupuncture it is most likely that they have been taught the trigger points.

QU’EST-CE QU’UN POINT GACHETTE ?

Pour simplifier, on peu dire qu’un point gachette est un nœud dans un muscle, qui provoque des douleurs. Cette douleur est souvent liée à une douleur dans une autre partie du corps, et pas nécessairement à l’endroit du nœud.

Il y a environ 400 muscles dans le corps humain et n’importe lequel d’entre eux peut développer un point gachette myofacial. Les symptômes d’une douleur myofaciale peuvent différer selon l’endroit et la gravité du problème, et peuvent se manifester sous forme d’une douleur profonde, constante ou intermittente. La douleur est généralement aggravée lors de l’utilisation du muscle ou du groupe de muscles touchés.

D’OÙ VIENNENT CES POINTS GACHETTE ?

Les causes les plus classiques sont des blessures ou traumatismes du muscle, ou une sur-utilisation chronique qui peut causer des dégâts ou un disfonctionnement.

Il y a surcharge lorsque le muscle est utilisé de manière incorrecte, ce qui provoque une tension sur les fibres musculaires. Ces muscles réagissent souvent en développant des points gachette.

ON A UN PEU DE PEINE À Y CROIRE, NON ?

Il n’est pas facile de penser que ces minuscules petits nœuds dans vos muscles puissent être à l’origine de tellement de variétés de problèmes. On a découvert qu’un grand nombre des maux et douleurs de tous les jours sont causés par des points gachette myofaciaux.En fait, on a prouvé (recherche des Dr J.Travell et D.Simons) qu’ils sont à l’origine d’environ 75% des problèmes de douleurs.

Caractéristiques des points gachette - Les points gachette sont assez tendres si on appuie dessus fermement, et sont prolongés par des bandes plus rigides que l’on peut sentir dans le muscle.

- Lorsque l’on pince ou on appuie fermement sur ces bandes, elles provoquent généralement une contraction du muscle et un cri de douleur involontaire.

- Le muscle affecté a un champ de mouvement réduit et est plus faible que d’habitude.

- La présence de points gachette dans un muscle le raccourcit.

- Les points gachette suivent un schéma connu d’irradiation de la douleur.

Traitement des points gachette - Que faire lorsqu’un muscle vous fait mal ou semble contracté ? Vous le massez bien sûr, c’est le remède de la nature. La friction est la solution idéale pour les points gachette, à condition que vous massiez le bon endroit. En général, les points gachette doivent être stimulés pour être soignés. La stimulation peut se faire de plusieurs manières différentes, parmi lesquelles : - Massage des points gachette : On exerce une pression forte avec un objet dur, par exemple une balle de golf.

- Un simple étirement du groupe de muscles affectés.

- Une injection d’un anesthésique local.

- L’application de packs froids et chauds sur les muscles.

- Massage des tissus en profondeur.

- L’acupuncture Il est souvent trop douloureux d’essayer d’étirer suffisamment le muscle. C’est là que l’acupuncture devient vitale dans la résolution de problèmes de points gachette. Il est admis que l’acupuncture est le meilleur des traitements pour la simple raison que les points gachette sont causés par une hypersensibilité d’un groupe spécifique de nerfs liés à la douleur. En médecine ou acupuncture traditionnelle chinoise, ces points gachette sont appelés les points « Ah-shi », ce qui signifie littéralement « aïe». Normalement, si vous consultez un médecin occidental qui a étudié l’acupuncture, il est fort probable qu’on lui aie également enseigné les points gachette.

Rants of a Grumpy Old Ski Bum...

I

find ski lift queues fascinating. I mean it. A few years back,, to stop myself getting wound up and spoiling my day on the slopes, I started studying different types of behaviour, now it’s become almost an obsession. The time has come for me to publish a few of my findings on the tricks some employ to avoid waiting their turn.

The ‘VIP’ technique This type is far too important to mix with the rest of us so, with any accompanying body guards, gracefully slides under the ropes, and barges straight to the front, skiing over any thing in their way whilst pretending not to notice. Extremely effective, especially if male, large and using the element of surprise.

The ‘Brat’technique Train your child to abandon you and employ its small size and flexible body parts to wriggle and weave its way between the legs and the sticks until it is in pole position. At this point you must look concerned and worried that your little darling will take the lifts without you , putting itself in mortal danger. Simultaneously the child must turn, lower a trembling bottom lip and look on the verge of tears. We will all instantly move aside to avoid accusations of child cruelty.

The ‘I’m in ski school’ technique Simple but effective, this technique consists simply of tagging on to the end of a ski class (or 2 for an even better camouflage) and following it through the priority line. It is transparent and lacks class but most of us are too nice to stick out a ski or a pole to trip them up.

The ‘I’m with them’ technique The rearguard of a large crowd believes it their legitimate right to push to the front to be with their mates for the ride up. Giggling and shouting to one another from either end of the queue is supposed to authenticate the act.

Usually confined to the younger generations and fairly nauseating.

The ‘I’m a foreigner’ technique Let’s be honest, some nationalities believe that queuing is for the weak and that marching to the front is a show of strength. If you cannot resolve disputes without causing a diplomatic incident then don’t bother, you can overtake them on the slopes later to demonstrate your nation’s technical superiority.

e suis fasciné par les queues des télésièges. Je suis sérieux! Il y a quelques années, pour ne pas m’énerver et ne pas gâcher ma journée sur les pistes, j’ai commencé à étudier les différents comportements, et maintenant, c’est devenu presque une obsession. Le moment est venu de publier quelques extraits concernant mes recherches sur les tactiques employées par certains pour éviter d’attendre leur tour.

La technique ‘VIP’ Ce type est de loin beaucoup trop important pour fréquenter les petites gens comme nous. Suivi par son garde du corps, il glisse avec élégance sous les cordes et bouscule son chemin pour atteindre le début de la queue. Il écrase tout ce qui lui entrave son passage en faisant semblant de ne pas le remarquer. Technique très efficace, surtout si celui qui l’emploie est un mâle, grand et sait attaquer par surprise.

La technique ‘sale gamin’ Entraînez votre enfant à vous abandonner et à profiter de sa taille miniature et sa souplesse pour gigoter et se faufiler entre jambes et bâtons jusqu’à ce qu’il se trouve en pole position. A cet instant même, vous devez commencer à avoir l’air très inquiet et vous montrer stressé à l’idée que votre petit loulou pourrait prendre seul le télésiège, se mettant en danger mortel. Simultanément l’enfant doit tourner son regard vers vous, faire trembler la lèvre inférieure et sembler être sur le point de pleurer. Nous nous mettrons tous de côté pour vous laisser passer et éviter toute accusation de cruauté envers l’enfant.

La technique ‘Je suis en cours de ski’ Simple, mais efficace, cette technique consiste tout simplement à vous attacher à une classe d’école de ski (2 classes sont encore mieux pour bien vous camoufler) et la suivre quand elle passe dans la queue prioritaire. C’est une technique transparente et qui manque classe mais la plupart d’entre-nous sont trop sympa pour vous faire trébucher à l’aide d’un ski ou d’un bâton.

La technique ‘Je suis avec eux’ Ici l’arrière-garde d’un grand groupe se croit en droit légitime de pousser vers l’avant pour pouvoir monter avec leur potes. Rigoler et crier d’un bout de la queue à l’autre est calculé pour authentifier l’acte. Technique généralement écœurante et limitée à la génération des jeunes.

La technique ‘Je suis un étranger’ Soyons francs. Certains nationalités considèrent que faire la queue est pour les faibles et que marcher au front est une démonstration de force. Si vous n’arrivez pas à résoudre vos disputes sans créer un incident diplomatique, laissez tomber, vous pouvez les doubler sur les pistes après comme démonstration de votre supériorité technique nationale.

Voilà quelques-unes seulement de mes classifications, je suis certain que vous en avez quelques-unes à vous aussi. J’aimerais bien les connaître, envoyez-moi un e-mail. Et, la prochaine fois qu’on vous bouscule dans la queue, prenez les conseils du vieux râleur - relaxez-vous et profitez du spectacle.

The power-bites are loaded with high energy goodness and can be altered to suit all palates, my favourite is a mix of dried cranberries, coconut, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and a little sneaky swig of maple syrup added to the mix! For those of you with a soft-spot for anything gooey and full of chocolate, you will melt for these brownies.

Believe me, you'll find yourself making this special treat more often than not!

So turn on your oven and get a mixing bowl out so that the next time you head up the mountain, you're packing a little extra something special.

ULTIMATE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES Makes approximately 16 squares (24 x 24cm square pan) 200g butter, cut into cubes + more for the pan 300g dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), chopped into small pieces 85g flour 40g cocoa powder + more for the pan 3 eggs (at least 53g each) at room temperature 275g sugar pinch of sea salt 75g macadamia nuts, toasted and roughly chopped In a heat proof glass or metal bowl, place 200g of the chocolate and all of the butter. Place over a simmering pot of water and allow to melt gently.

simmering pot and set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, heat oven to 175ºC and prep baking pan by cutting a piece of baking paper to fit snugly on the bottom, then coat the bottom and sides with a little butter then dust it all with cocoa powder. Set aside. In another large bowl, place eggs and sugar and using an electric mixer, whip until it is a pale yellow colour and has doubled in volume (this is called the ribbon stage). This step can take 8-10 minutes, so be patient! Once ready, gently fold the chocolate into the egg mixture, using a spatula. Big, gentle turns are best, as you want to avoid loosing any air from the egg mixture. Sift flour and cocoa powder into the mixture and add the salt. Using the same motion as before, gently fold this into the mixture until combined.

Lastly, add the remaining 100g of chopped dark chocolate as well as the chopped macadamia nuts, folding gently. Pour into your prepared pan, giving it a gentle swirl so that it’s even. Place on the middle rack in the oven and bake for 25 minutes. Test for ‘done-ness’, the centre shouldn't move if you nudge the pan, the sides should be slightly pulling away from the pan and a skewer or butter knife inserted into the centre should come out with a few crumbs clinging to it. Allow to cool completely in pan. Run a knife along the sides to make sure nothing is clinging and remove brownies. Cut into desired shape and devour! These will keep in an airtight container for up to two weeks or can be wrapped tightly in plastic and frozen for up to one month.

POWER BITES Makes approximately 35-40 balls 250g peanut butter, crunchy or smooth (any other nut butter can be substituted if desired) 250ml good quality honey 360g old-fashioned oat flakes (fine cut) 60g flax seeds 250g dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), chopped into small pieces 250g total mix of your choice any of the following: nuts, seeds and/or soft dried fruit (chopped into small pieces if necessary, don't forget to toast your nuts for extra flavour) In a large bowl or the stand bowl of a mixer with a paddle attachment, combine peanut butter and honey until smooth. Gradually add oats and flax seeds, blending until well combined. Add chocolate bits and your personalised combo mixture and continue to stir until blended. With the help of a tablespoon, scoop out some mixture, enough to make a ball the size of a two franc coin and roll in your hands until smooth and there are no cracks. Repeat with remaining mixture. Place balls in mini muffin cups or on a cookie tray, making sure that there is a little space between each of them.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes. These will keep in an air-tight container for up to 3 weeks.

A l’aide d’une spatule, ajoutez le chocolat à la composition. Tournez doucement pour ne pas faire évacuer l’air. Ajoutez la farine tamisée et le cacao en poudre dans le mélange et puis le sel. Mélangez délicatement jusqu’à obtention d’une pâte homogène.

En dernier, ajoutez les 100g restant du chocolat et les noix de macadamia, encore une fois, incorporez doucement. Versez le tout dans le moule en prenant soin de répandre de manière régulière. Placez au centre du four et faites cuire pendant 25 minutes. Contrôlez la cuisson, le centre ne doit pas bouger quand vous secouez légèrement le moule et les bords doivent commencer à rétrécir du plat. Si vous insérez un couteau (ou broche) dans le centre de la pâte il devrait sortir avec quelques miettes attachées. Laissez refroidir entièrement dans le plat. Passez un couteau autour les bords pour vérifier que la pâte s’est bien détachée et sortez-la.

Coupez les brownies dans la forme voulue et dévorez ! Ils se conservent dans un récipient hermétique pour 2 semaines ou, bien emballés en film alimentaire, au congélateur pour un mois.

BOUCHÉES ENERGÉTIQUES Pour environ 35-40 boules 250g de beurre de cacahuète, avec ou sans morceaux (tout autre beurre de noix peut également être employé) 250ml de miel de bonne qualité 360g de flocons d’avoine traditionnels (fins) 60g de graines de lin 250g de chocolat noir (contenant un minimum de 70% cacao), concassé 250g d’une sélection de: noix, graines et/ou fruits mou séchés (finement hachés si nécessaire. N’oubliez pas de toaster les noix pour plus de saveur) Dans un grand bol (ou le bol de votre robot sur socle) mélangez le beurre de cacahouète et miel jusqu’à l’obtention d’une pâte lisse. Ajoutez peu à peu les flocons et les graines de lin et mélangez bien. Ajoutez les éclats de chocolat et votre sélection personnalisée et mélangez encore. A l’aide d’une cuillère à soupe, prenez un peu du mélange de la taille d’une pièce de 2 francs, et roulez dans vos mains jusqu’à ce que la boule soit lisse et sans fissures. Répétez avec le reste du mélange.

Placez les boules dans un moule à mini muffins ou sur une plaque à four, laissant très peu d’espace entre elles. Recouvrez d’une feuille de film alimentaire et mettez au frigo pour un minimum de 30 minutes. Vous pouvez les conserver dans un récipient hermétique pour 3 semaines.

A

forthcoming birthday is always a depressing thought when you’re over half a century-old - I needed something to make the evening special.

After an interesting dinner in Paris some weeks back I had the good fortune to sit next to two wine merchants who were happily ordering 30 year-old burgundies and proceeding to generously share them. After this experience I thought I’d discovered the best way to make for a memorable birthday celebration.

Tasting old wines is an art in itself. Having spent a lifetime tasting young wines and searching desperately for fruit-driven flavours, tasting ageing pinot noir was a whole new challenge.

What an experience; to plunge ones senses into the world of earthy, farmyard smells, wet wood, leather, damp soil, undergrowth and the like. It took me several hours before I was able to come to grips with the change, but then it was as if a whole new world had opened up - one that kept me awake that night, going over the smells and tastes I had experienced.

Tasting wines which had been produced in summers long-gone, when I was a child was a daunting and humbling experience. These wines still had power and freshness and yet were still so soft and gentle I could only dream of opening another bottle.

To start we opened a Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru "Les Vaucrains" 1990, what a surprise; powerful, fresh fruit, balanced velvety flavours and a wonderfully soft finish. A wine that could probably still spend another ten years in the bottle. Such freshness in a 20 year-old wine was unexpected.

Next we opened a Savigny-les-Beaune "La Dominode" 1978, the wine was perfect, gone was all the fruit and freshness and here, finally, were those flavours I had dreamt of; under-wood dampness, moss and mushrooms, earthy, farmyard smells, wet leather, some amazing powerful smells that invade your very soul. Perfect.

Finally we opened the last bottle for the night, a Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru by Louis Trapet , also from 1978, 32 years in the bottle. When the cork was pulled our sommelier announced sadly that the cork was black with mould and on first approach I feared that time had cheated me, but after a few minutes in the glass, this carefully-decanted wine began to deliver its secrets, offering the aromas of that 1978 summer, long-past. As we finished the last glass I knew that we had created memories which would last forever, old wines shared with good friends and family, an experience never to be forgotten.

Our wines came from Macbirch and were chosen by Philippe, it takes knowledge to choose (and can be an expensive risk to buy) old wines but it was worth every cent.

n anniversaire qui s’approche est toujours un peu déprimant lorsque vous avez passé le cap du demi-siècle – J’avais donc besoin de trouver quelque chose qui rendrait cette soirée mémorable.

Lors d’un intéressant repas à Paris il y a de cela quelques semaines, nous avons eu la chance d’être assis à côté de deux marchands de vin qui prenaient plaisir à commander des Bourgognes vieux de 30 ans et à les déguster généreusement en notre compagnie. Après cette expérience, j’en ai conclu que c’était là la meilleure manière de rendre mémorable une fête d’anniversaire.

La dégustation de vieux vins est en soi un véritable art. Après avoir passé toute ma vie à déguster des vins jeunes et à privilégier les vins portés sur le fruit, déguster des anciens pinots est apparu tout à coup comme un véritable défi.

Quelle expérience que de confronter nos sens à des notes de tourbe, de bois mouillé, de cuir, de terreau humide, de sous-bois … Il m’a fallu plusieurs heures pour prendre mes marques et accepter le changement, mais ce fut ensuite comme un nouveau monde qui s’ouvrait à moi, au point de m’empêcher de dormir la nuit en repensant à toutes ces saveurs et odeurs nouvelles que j’avais découvertes.

Déguster des vins produits il y a de nombreuses années, alors que je n’étais encore qu’un enfant, est une expérience intimidante et une leçon d’humilité.

Pourtant, ces vins étaient encore puissants et frais, mais tout en douceur, à tel point que je ne pouvais que rêver d’en ouvrir une deuxième bouteille.

Nous avons d’abord ouvert un Nuits St Georges Premier Cru "Les Vaucrains" 1990, une sacrée surprise, une puissante note fruitée, des saveurs équilibrées veloutées, et un final arrondi. Un vin qui pourrait sans aucun doute rester encore dix ans en bouteille.

Retrouver une telle fraîcheur dans un vin âgé de 20 ans nous a tous surpris.

Nous avons ensuite débouché un Savigny les Beaune "La Dominode" 1978, un vin parfait, mais dans ce cas plus aucune note fraîche ou fruitée, je découvrais enfin ces saveurs tant attendues, l’humidité sous le bois, la mousse et les champignons, les odeurs de la ferme, le cuir mouillé, des saveurs puissantes et incroyables qui vous touchent jusque dans votre âme. Tout simplement parfait !

Pour terminer, nous avons dégusté la dernière bouteille de la soirée, un Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru de Louis Trapet, aussi de 1978, qui a donc passé 32 ans en bouteille. Après l’avoir débouchée, notre sommelier nous annonça avec regret que le bouchon était noir de moisissure. Au premier abord, j’ai crû que le temps m’avait joué un tour, mais après quelques minutes dans le verre, ce vin décanté avec soin commença à nous livrer ses secrets, ces arômes de son temps. En terminant notre dernier verre, j’ai réalisé que nous avions partagé des moments inoubliables, en dégustant des vieux vins en famille et avec de bons amis. Nous nous sommes fourni chez Macbirch et les vins ont été sélectionnés par Philippe.

Il faut de bonnes connaissances pour sélectionner et risquer l’achat de vieilles bouteilles, mais l’expérience en vaut vraiment la peine.
