For the past 20 years, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra has carried the spirit of the Festival across the globe. Discover the celebrations of this remarkable anniversary.

It is with sincere joy and deep gratitude that I write to you this summer of 2026. Thanks to your unwavering commitment, generosity, and passion for music, the Verbier Festival continues to grow with brilliance and ambition. On behalf of the Committee, I extend my warmest thanks.
Driven by this momentum, the festival continues to expand its reach far beyond the Alps. The tour in Asia, notably with the Verbier Festival Shenzhen, introduced our repertoire to a new curious, and enthusiastic audience. Even more remarkably, a residency at Carnegie Hall in New York is already announced for 2027, affirming the Verbier Festival’s place among the world’s leading musical institutions. Rarely has a festival been invited to this “temple” of music—an honour in which we can all take pride.
The 2026 edition will also be marked by major celebrations. The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a special concert on July 24, alongside six other major events. Twenty years of excellence for this emblematic ensemble, a true ambassador of the festival’s spirit.
The Paternot Prize will celebrate its tenth anniversary with an exceptional concert on July 21 at the church, bringing together several of its laureates. A moment of transmission and emotion not to be missed. We look forward to welcoming you to Verbier this summer—numerous, loyal, and passionate.

CWhere music and the mountains bring together a New Generation of enthusiasts
Each summer, the alpine resort of Verbier is transformed into a vibrant centre for classical music. At the heart of this prestigious event, one initiative is bringing a fresh new energy: NextGen.
reated to ensure continuity within the Friends of the Verbier Festival — notably by bringing together the children of the Festival’s earliest Friends — NextGen gathers people between the ages of 30 and 60. It is aimed both at seasoned music lovers and at those curious to discover classical music in an exceptional setting.
Beyond the concerts, NextGen is built around a simple idea: sharing a common passion in a warm and authentic atmosphere, while creating a genuine circle of friendship and support around the Verbier Festival.
Our ambition is to attract this new generation not only as concertgoers, but also as members of the Friends Association, helping to ensure the continuation of this essential support for the Festival’s development. Becoming a member of the Association also provides access to numerous benefits, including preferential ticket rates.
NextGen has chosen to focus its energy around one flagship weekend, conceived as a true gathering point. From 24 to 26 July 2026, returning participants and newcomers alike will have the opportunity to come together and experience this unique combination of music and mountain life. The NextGen 2026 programme has been designed to be comprehensive, featuring not only concerts, but also highlights from the UNLTD and VF Kids programmes, masterclasses, and convivial moments shared over lunches and dinners.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE VERBIER FESTIVAL SHENZHEN
A parade of leading international artists, packed halls, and more than 23,000 delighted audience members: the Verbier Festival’s first edition abroad can rightly be hailed as a major success. A clear sign of its expanding reach, its partnership with the Chinese megacity of Shenzhen is set to continue at least until 2028.
The programme first paid tribute to the host country with Southern Radiance by Wang Danhong, widely regarded as one of China’s most gifted composers.
Was it inspired by the global model of Art Basel, with its multiple international editions, that the Verbier Festival chose to extend its footprint onto the world stage? Quite possibly. In any case, for a Friend of the Festival, attending this inaugural edition beyond its Alpine home was an opportunity not to be missed.
Let us set the scene for this second iteration of the Verbier concept, which took place from January 30 to February 8. It unfolded in a strikingly modern, vertical metropolis bristling with spectacular skyscrapers, where the first notes of this unprecedented event resounded. To make a lasting impression, the opening concert was staged at the Longgang Arts Center, inaugurated for the occasion. This dazzling cultural landmark, blending modernity with tradition, draws architectural inspiration from the shapes of traditional Chinese instruments—an ideal setting for a debut performance bridging eras and cultures.
The programme first paid tribute to the host country with Southern Radiance by Wang Danhong, widely regarded as one of China’s most gifted composers. It then moved to the romantic expressiveness of German composer Max Bruch, before culminating in the celebrated New World Symphony by Antonín Dvořák, weaving together Czech nostalgia and American influences. To say the audience was captivated would be an understatement, judging by the sustained applause. The dynamic leadership of Hungarian conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy, the refined musicality of Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich, and the excellence of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra all played a decisive role.
Following this successful opening, the heart of the Verbier Festival Shenzhen shifted to the Concert Hall, a faceted structure rising like a diamond at the centre of the city. Within its walls, concerts and masterclasses continued to delight audiences eager for musical brilliance. Unsurprisingly, in the early days’ unofficial “applause rankings,” Chinese piano virtuoso Yuja Wang took top honours. Yet every artist on the programme received an equally enthusiastic reception.
The Festival’s educational dimension was also highlighted, notably through the work of Gautier Capuçon. During a masterclass, the renowned cellist generously shared his insights with two young talents, Haozheng Niu (14) and Tingyu Xie (15). Attentive to the finest details – attack, tone length, legato, bow positioning, and physical relaxation – he demonstrated and guided without imposing, emphasizing the sensitivity of their playing and that delicate balance between discipline and creativity that brings interpretation to life.
A BREATH OF FRESH ENERGY
More broadly, what strikes Western observers is the youthfulness of the audience, with an average age of around thirty. This invigorating reality is matched by an unreserved appetite for classical music from abroad, as if making up for lost time. In this cultural context, artists are revered like pop stars: whenever one ventures into the crowd, they are quickly surrounded by admirers eager for selfies and autographs.
While such fervour may initially surprise, this cultural curiosity is, above all, a source of hope for the future of classical music. It also prompts reflection: how can younger generations in the West be reconnected with an art form still too often perceived as elitist and inaccessible?
Apicture tells a thousand words, they say, and certainly there’s truth in that when you look up a certain November 2024 release on the Verbier Festival Gold/Deutsche Grammophon label. The two works advertised on its cover are Beethoven’s Fifth and Third Symphonies, the former performed in 2018 by the Verbier Festival Orchestra, and the latter by the Verbier Chamber Orchestra in 2024. Illustrating these two performances is an action shot of the guest conductor for both of them: Sir Simon Rattle; and Rattle in this cover photo is exuding such a sense of loving, urgent music energy, and of connection with his musicians – bright-eyed, open-mouthed, baton poised low in his left hand as his raised right hand deftly shapes a phrase – that one need say no more about why return to the VF this July, for one concert apiece with the VFO and the VFCO, is one of the summer’s most anticipated events.
While spending a few days of holiday in Verbier with his wife, he graciously agreed to replace Iván Fischer, who was unwell, at short notice.
There is in fact also a further story hidden in that Beethoven recording – of Rattle’s uncommon generosity towards the Festival. Because while the 2024 performance was pre-planned, the 2018 one – his Festival debut – was entirely unscheduled, him magnanimously standing in for an indisposed Iván Fischer, having already been in Verbier on holiday with his wife, Czech mezzo soprano Magdalena Kožená, who herself was booked to perform. Plus, history repeated itself in 2022, Rattle again accompanying Kožená while himself on holiday, and this time stepping in to conduct Kožená’s own suddenly-conductorless Mozart Requiem performance with the VFCO.
Back to Rattle’s thoroughly pre-planned 2026 concerts, and the repertoire he has personally curated with Martin Engstroem strongly reflects his life and career. His 24 July reunion with the VFCO pairs Mozart’s ‘Prague’ Symphony with music by one of the composers for whom he’s especially known, Bartók, via the one-act opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, starring Kozena alongside bass-baritone Gerald Finley.
His 20 July VFO concert speaks strongly to his career-long work as inspirer and mentor to up-coming generations of orchestral musicians and conductors – from founding the Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra during his 1980-1998 City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra tenure, through his time with the Berliner Philharmoniker (2002-2018) and London Symphony Orchestra (2017-2023), and now as he leads the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. That VFO thus gets to work with him across a tremendous breadth of demanding repertoire. First, Ligeti’s shimmering, sliding, time-suspending Atmosphères with its all-out rejection of traditional tonality, form and technique. Then three different flavours of luxurious-textured Romanticism: Wagner’s Prelude to Lohengrin, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 with Kirill Gerstein, and Strauss’s orchestral showpiece, Ein Heldenleben.
In short, what a conductor and what a relationship – and there’s still time to look up that Beethoven recording and remind yourself of that magic
VFCO presents its first virtual reality experience, filmed at Schloss Elmau
Immerse yourself in a world where classical music is reimagined through virtual reality.
Imagine being at the very heart of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, surrounded by the musicians, carried by the vibrations of the strings, enveloped by the power of the brass, and guided by Gábor Takács-Nagy. No longer a spectator experiencing the orchestra from a distance, you are instead seated within it - free to move, to shift perspectives, to observe every gesture, every nuance, every exchange between the artists. This experience, once confined to the imagination, is now made tangible through cutting-edge technology.
On its twentieth anniversary, the VFCO is unveiling its first virtual reality experience, developed in collaboration with Cybel’Art (Virtual Hall). Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7—one of the most vibrant works in the symphonic repertoire—takes center stage. cameras, this production offers an unprecedented proximity to the musicians. Every intention becomes perceptible. Every detail gains in intensity.
This initiative reflects a clear ambition: to bring classical music closer to audiences and broaden its accessibility. It opens new possibilities for audiences who may be geographically or physically unable to attend live performances, offering them an immersive musical experience.
This project is part of an experimental approach known as Artech’, which explores the convergence of artistic creation and immersive technologies. Through this dialogue between the physical and the digital—the “phygital”—a new way of experiencing music emerges: more open, more embodied, more interactive. The orchestra is no longer confined to the stage; it becomes a shared space into which the audience is invited.
Developed in collaboration with Cybel’Art, a company specializing in holographic and volumetric experiences, the production combines advanced technologies—augmented reality, volumetric capture, and hybrid digital environments—to offer a renewed vision of the concert experience.
This summer in Verbier, the VF Studio will present the experience to the public, with three virtual reality headsets available on site. An invitation to discover Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 from within—and to experience a new form of proximity with the artists, reflecting the Verbier Festival’s ambition to remain firmly rooted in its time while expanding the reach of classical music.

My pick for summer 2026
If there is one UNLTD concert I would especially recommend to our Friends this summer, it is Between Worlds, in which Sandrine Piau joins Pedja Mužijević and members of the Leonkoro Quartet in a programme suspended between Schubert and our own time. The concert opens with themes so central to Schubert – night, wandering, human fragility and the presence of death – before moving into death speaks by American composer David Lang. Composed for soprano, piano, violin and electric guitar and first performed by musicians from New York’s indie music scene, the work draws inspiration from Schubert songs in which Death speaks to the living. Sandrine Piau then reunites with the Leonkoro Quartet for a striking reimagining of Erlkönig before Schubert’s final masterpiece, Death and the Maiden. For me, this is exactly where the magic of UNLTD happens: when the boundaries between old and new completely disappear.

Prix Yves Paternot: a living legacy at the heart of the Festival
Co-founder of The Friends of the Verbier Festival and President of the Association from 1994 to 1999, Yves Paternot left a profound mark on the festival’s history. Visionary, generous and deeply human, he helped shape the unique spirit of warmth and loyalty that has connected artists, music lovers and the people of Verbier for more than 30 years. For him, the Friends were far more than a circle of supporters: they were a true family, bringing together music lovers and artists from around the world, from emerging talents of the Verbier Festival Academy to some of the greatest performers of our time.
Following his passing in 2016, a group of close friends created the Prix Yves Paternot to support each year’s most promising young musician of the Verbier Festival Academy. Endowed with CHF 250,000, the prize is now among the most significant awards in Europe for emerging artists. Yet what truly sets it apart is the lasting support offered to its laureates, who are regularly invited back to perform in Verbier.
The year 2026 marks the tenth anniversary of the prize. To celebrate the occasion, several former laureates will return to Verbier for a special anniversary concert at the Verbier Église on 21 July at 15:00. Among the artists appearing are sopranos Ava Dodd and Meigui Zhang, mezzo-soprano Adèle Charvet, baritones Anton Beliaev and Milan Siljanov, violinist Timothy Chooi and Trio Concept.
Other laureates will also be present throughout the Festival: Bryan Cheng will take part in the Rencontres Inédites on 26 July; Adèle Charvet will reveal a more personal side of her artistry in a tribute to Joséphine Baker on 22 July; Trio Concept will appear in several performances for young audiences; Timothy Chooi will give masterclasses as well as a recital at the Chapelle Protestante on 20 July.
These are just some of the opportunities to reconnect with artists who, over the years, have become part of the wider Verbier Festival family. They also stand as a reminder that, ten years after its creation, the Prix Yves Paternot continues to uphold the values of openness, generosity and mentorship that were so dear to Yves Paternot.

VERBIER CULTURAL CENTRE
An innovative, inclusive and unifying project
The Verbier Cultural Centre project lies at the heart of the long-term vision for Verbier and the Val de Bagnes: to create a vibrant, year-round destination in the spirit of a true “four-season Verbier.”
Designed as an open, inclusive and accessible venue, the Verbier Cultural Centre will be an independent institution serving the entire region. While the Verbier Festival will naturally be a key partner of the Centre, it's annual programme will bring together artistic activities, educational programmes and social spaces within a venue designed to serve both local and international audiences.
In this context, every support will be essential. As ambassadors of the project, the Festival Friends will have an important role to play in sharing and promoting its vision.
Hervé Boissière, Verbier Festival Co-Managing Director and President of the Cultural Centre Dev. Committee, spoke to Marie-Jo Valente about his vision for it all.
How do you envision the future Cultural Centre becoming part of Verbier’s unique identity and the ecosystem already created by the Verbier Festival?
The ambition of the Verbier Cultural Centre is to become a place for gathering and creativity at the heart of the Val de Bagnes. Open year-round, it will bring together local and international artists, as well as audiences of all ages, around music, the arts and innovative formats. The Centre will include performance halls, rehearsal studios and recording facilities. Attention will be given to young audiences through collaborations with schools and regional cultural institutions. Rooted in the Verbier Festival’s values of excellence and transmission, the project will grow in close connection with local stakeholders and with the support of the region.
Beyond concerts and cultural events, what role will the future Centre play in education, transmission and younger generations?
The Verbier Cultural Centre is designed to be a true home for the arts, where both audiences and artists — professionals and amateurs alike — feel welcome. Three main creative pillars will shape its activities: music and live performance, visual arts with a large traditional exhibition space, and an immersive venue dedicated to innovative artistic experiences. Transmission and education will form the third pillar, continuing the exceptional legacy of the Festival Academy. Verbier is already one of the world’s leading platforms for music education, and the Centre will allow this mission to expand year-round by offering outstanding conditions for learning, creation and artistic development for younger generations.
What are the main financial, architectural or institutional challenges the project still faces today?
There are naturally many challenges, but the most important is to unite the entire Val de Bagnes community around the project and ensure that everyone understands its value. Every resident should feel connected to it, as the Centre represents a major cultural and social asset for both the region and visitors who will come yearround to discover this new cultural destination. The building, designed by Kengo Kuma with acoustics by Yasu Toyota, reflects the project’s ambition — much like Verbier itself, internationally attractive while deeply attached to its roots and values.
As for financing, every contribution will matter, and we are already receiving generous expressions of support. This is only the beginning, and we will work hard to make the dream of giving Verbier an exceptional cultural venue a reality.
EXPOSITION HOMMAGE TRIBUTE EXHIBITION
In memory of Rodion Shchedrin
The Verbier Festival wishes to pay tribute to Rodion Shchedrin, a loyal composer and cherished friend of the Festival for many years, who passed away on 29 August 2025.
Born in Moscow in 1932 into a family of musicians, Rodion Shchedrin became one of the leading figures of contemporary Russian music. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory, he developed a virtuosic and inventive musical language deeply rooted in the Russian tradition. A prolific composer, remarkable pianist and independent spirit during the Soviet era, he created major works such as Carmen Suite, Lolita, Dead Souls and Anna Karenina, several of them written for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. First invited to Verbier in 1997 for the performance of his Violin Concerto by Maxim Vengerov and Antonio Pappano, he gradually became a treasured member of the Festival’s artistic family. Together with Maya Plisetskaya, he was a regular guest of the Festival, where he also composed several works in a chalet generously made available to him by one of the Festival Friends.
