YVES PATERNOT LEGACY FUND Yves Paternot was the founder of the Friends of the Verbier Festival and member of the Foundation’s Board. Before his passing in 2016, he made a significant donation to the Festival with the aim of encouraging others to give too. The fund’s trustees approved an annual CHF 200,000 contribution for three Festival editions, starting in 2018, with the goal of building a sustainable financial future for the Verbier Festival Academy. Yves Paternot a fondé l’association des Amis du Verbier Festival et fut membre du conseil d'administration de la Fondation. Avant son décès en 2016, M. Paternot a fait un don conséquent au Festival dans le but d'encourager les autres à faire de même. BANK JULIUS BAER A Commitment to Future Generations through the Development of Young Talent Engagée auprès des jeunes, mobilisée pour la culture

Supporting art and music has been integral to Julius Baer’s philosophy for decades. An interest in visual art dates back to the 1930s, when the Baer family began its private art collection. Some members of the Baer family have also pursued artistic careers, with one studying classical music. As a result, the family has maintained an intensive contact with the art scene in Zurich, Paris and New York. In the early 1980s, Bank Julius Baer founded its corporate art collection. The purpose was, and still is, to support artists who, at the time of a first purchase, are not yet firmly established, but clearly show great potential. Nearly two decades later, the Bank started to sponsor concert halls, festivals and museums based on its heritage. Its collaboration with the Verbier Festival dates back to 2010 and focuses primarily on the Festival’s artist training mandate. Julius Baer shares the Festival’s commitment to future generations through the development of emerging talents. The commitment goes beyond financial support: the Bank sponsors the daily lunches and leads a ‘basics of financial management’ seminar for Academy musicians. Soutenir l’art et la musique fait partie intégrante de la philosophie de la Banque Julius Baer depuis des décennies. L’intérêt pour l’art visuel remonte au début des années 1930 lorsque la famille Baer a débuté sa collection d’œuvres d’art. Certains membres ont également poursuivi des carrières artistiques, l'un d'entre eux étudiant la musique classique. Au final, la famille a maintenu un lien profond avec la scène artistique à Zurich, Paris et New York. Au début des années 1980, la Banque Julius Baer a créé sa collection d’art d’entreprise. Le but était, et reste toujours, le soutien des artistes qui, au moment d’une première commande, ne sont pas encore fermement établis dans le milieu, mais démontrent un grand potentiel. Près de deux décennies plus tard, la Banque a commencé à parrainer des salles de concert, des festivals et musées fondés sur cette tradition. Sa collaboration avec le Verbier Festival remonte à 2010 et se concentre principalement sur le pôle de formation des artistes du Festival. Julius Baer partage l'engagement du Festival envers les futures générations à travers l’accompagnement de talents émergents. Cet engagement va au-delà du soutien financier : la banque sponsorise les déjeuners quotidiens et anime un séminaire sur les « bases de la gestion financière » pour les musiciens de l'Academy.

FONDATION NEVA Supporting Russia's Most Promising Talent Aux côtés des futurs talents de Russie

For the past ten years, the Neva Foundation has been committed to the Verbier Festival, particularly through support of its artist training programmes. Thanks to this, many young talents from Russia have taken part in the Academy. To live such an immersive experience and to benefit from teaching provided by the greatest masters is a tremendous opportunity for any young musician. This year, this chance will undoubtedly have very special meaning for the 12 Russian students whose visit we are facilitating. Their stay in Verbier, postponed for a year, comes after a period during which their ambitions and options have been brutally halted. Whether they are part of the Academy Soloist Programme, Atelier Lyrique, Junior Orchestra or Conducting Programme, we feel it is more important than ever to encourage the career development of young musicians around the world. Depuis dix ans, la Fondation Neva s’engage aux côtés du Verbier Festival en soutenant tout particulièrement les initiatives pour la formation des artistes. De très nombreux jeunes talents originaires de Russie sont ainsi passés par l’Academy grâce à ce soutien. Vivre une telle immersion et profiter de l’enseignement prodigué par les plus grands maîtres est une chance pour tout jeune musicien ou musicienne qui se voit offrir une invitation. Cette année, elle aura sans doute pour les 12 étudiants et étudiants russes dont nous facilitons la venue une saveur toute particulière. Leur séjour à Verbier, repoussé d’une année, intervient après une période où leurs ambitions et leurs options ont été brutalement mises à l’arrêt. Qu’ils participent à l’Academy Soloist Programme, à l’Atelier Lyrique, au Junior Orchestra ou au Conducting Programme, il nous semble plus que jamais indispensable d’encourager la progression de carrière des jeunes musiciens à travers le monde.

This year, all Academy events, whether free of charge or not, are accessible by prior reservation through the Festival’s website or Ticket Office. Reservations may be made by mobile phone at the entrance of each event. This year, orchestra rehearsals are not open to the public. SOLOISTS & ENSEMBLES The Academy searches the world for the most promising pianists, violinists, violists, cellists and chamber music ensembles to become students of its Soloists & Ensembles Programmes. Normally, eight from each solo discipline and one ensemble are selected for three weeks of mentorship and coaching by a faculty that is second to none. A select number of promising junior students under age 16 and auditing ‘Artists of Promise’ are also invited to soak up the Festival experience with the aim of inspiring them to apply to the Academy in the future. L’Academy recherche dans le monde entier les pianistes, violonistes, altistes, violoncellistes et ensembles les plus prometteurs pour intégrer ses programmes Solistes & Ensembles. Huit musiciens de chaque discipline solo et deux ensembles sont habituellement sélectionnés pour trois semaines de mentorat et de coaching par un corps professoral d’exception. De jeunes étudiants, âgés de 13 à 15 ans et triés sur le volet, sont également invités en résidence pour se nourrir de l’expérience du Festival et ce, afin de les inciter à intégrer l’Academy à l’avenir.

HENRY FROM

South Korean pianist Sae Yoon Chon last appeared in Verbier as a finalist of the 2019 Vendome Prize. He is also First Prize winner of the Dublin International Piano Competition (2018) and Orford Music Festival Competition (2019). He has performed with the Cleveland, Hong Kong and Valencia Orchestras, Dublin’s National Symphony Orchestra, and has worked with conductors Jahja Ling, Tania Miller, Bruno Aprea, John Morris Russell, Young-Min Park, Andrew Mogrelia, Erzhan Dautov, Ja Kyung Year and Denis Mastromonaco. Sae Yoon studies with John O’Connor. Le pianiste sud-coréen Sae Yoon Chon a fait sa dernière apparition à Verbier en tant que finaliste du Vendome Prize 2019. Il est également lauréat du Premier Prix du Concours international de piano de Dublin (2018) et du concours du festival de musique d’Orford (2019). Henry From was named one of the ‘30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30’ by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 2019. He was also the First Prize winner of the under 17 piano category of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Manulife Competition in 2018. Henry’s Piano Trio, Trio Savyon, has performed in Boston, Warsaw, Calgary, throughout Israel, and at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival. He is an enthusiastic composer too and his orchestral works have been premiered by the Winnipeg and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras. His teachers include Sandra Payton, Amanda Chan and Edward Top. Henry From a été classé dans le « Top 30 des musiciens classiques de moins de 30 ans » par la Canadian Broadcasting Corporation en 2019. Il est également lauréat du Premier Prix du Concours Montreal Symphony Orchestra Manulife 2018 dans la catégorie moins de 17 ans. Dina Ivanova studied at the Central Music School in Moscow and at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Alexander Mndoyants before her present teacher, Grigory Gruzman at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar. Dina has won numerous awards including Second Prize at the Liszt Competition in Weimar (2015), First Prize at the Tel Hai Competition in Israel (2016), the Artist Recognition Award at the 2017 International Keyboard Festival in New York, as well as Third Prize and the Capgemini Audience Prize at the Liszt International Competition in Utrecht (2017), after which she immediately embarked on a tour of the Netherlands. Dina Ivanova s’est formée à l’École centrale de musique de Moscou et au Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou avec Alexander Mndoyants avant d’étudier avec Grigory Gruzman à la Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt de Weimar. Oleksii Kanke studies with Milana Cherniavskaya at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts and is a scholar and a regular contributor to the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, where he holds a Vere Music Foundation scholarship. Oleskii is the winner of several competitions, including the Juries in Competition (Salzburg) and the Vienna International Music Competition, both in 2019, Ettlinen’s International Competition for Young Pianists Competition (2018), Kiev’s International Vladimir Horowitz Memorial Competition (2016), the 2015 International Piano Competition in memory of Emil Gilels (Odessa), the Astana Piano Passion in Kazakhstan and the Step to Excellence in St Petersburg, both in 2013. Oleksii Kanke étudie avec Milana Cherniavskaya à l’Université de musique et des arts du spectacle de Vienne. Il est en outre collaborateur régulier de l’Académie internationale de musique du Liechtenstein, où il est titulaire d’une bourse de la Vere Music Foundation. Varvara Kutuzova began piano studies at age four at the Central Music School before moving onto the Gnessin school in Moscow. She is recipient of the Spivakov and New Names Foundations scholarships, and is winner of competitions including the New York Prima Artist, Astana Piano Passion and the televised Nutcracker International Competition. In addition to performances in Russia, Varvara has appeared at festivals including Annecy Classic (France), ArtDialog (Switzerland) and the Arturo Benedetti Michelangelo (Italy). As soloist, she has appeared with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, the Moscow Virtuosi, the Tchaikovsky Grand Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Nice and the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra. Varvara Kutuzova a débuté le piano à l’âge de quatre ans à l’École centrale de musique avant de passer à l’école Gnessin de Moscou. Elle a reçu les bourses Spivakov et New Names Foundations, et est lauréate de concours tels que le New York Prima Artist, l’Astana Piano Passion et le Concours international télévisé Casse-Noisette. He went on to study at the Purcell School in London with Tatiana Sarkissova and has been at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland since 2017. Among his first successes was the Grand Prize at the 2010 International Shostakovich Piano Competition for Youth (Moscow). Nikita has performed at St Petersburg Music House, the Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, Fazioli Hall and The Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory. He holds scholarships from the Voronezh State government for ‘outstanding cultural achievements’ and from the National Artist of Russia, Vladimir Ovchinnikov. Nikita Lukinov a commencé ses études de piano dans sa Russie natale avec Svetlana Semenkova. Il s’est ensuite formé à la Purcell School de Londres avec Tatiana Sarkissova et est depuis 2017 au Conservatoire royal d’Écosse. Parmi ses premiers succès, notons le Grand Prix du Concours international de piano Chostakovitch pour la jeunesse en 2010 (Moscou). Valaisan pianist Fanny Monnet first studied with Serguei Milstein and later at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva, where she was honoured with the highest distinction and prize for best recital for her Bachelor’s degree in 2018. She continued her studies with Nelson Goerner and obtained her Soloist degree in 2020. Fanny has won numerous prizes including First Prize at the Jeunesses Musicales Suisses in 2013 and an honourable mention from the Jury at the Tucuman Competition (Argentina, 2019). She has performed as soloist and collaborator in concerts in New York, Moscow, Paris, Amsterdam and Vienna. Fanny is also a self-taught violinist and plays in the Orchestre de St-Maurice. La pianiste valaisanne Fanny Monnet a d’abord étudié avec Serguei Milstein, puis à la Haute École de Musique de Genève, où elle a été honorée de la plus haute distinction et du Prix du meilleur récital lors de son Bachelor en 2018. Elle poursuit ses études avec Nelson Goerner et obtient son diplôme de soliste en 2020. Fanny a remporté de nombreux prix, notamment le Premier Prix des Jeunesses Musicales Suisses en 2013 et une mention honorable du jury au Concours de Tucuman (Argentine, 2019). Fyodor Orlov is an observing Artist of Promise this summer at the Verbier Festival Academy. He was chosen from among the best young talented pianists who performed in a special concert at Moscow’s Zaryadye Hall in the spring. The concert featured six students of Moscow’s leading music institutions. The event was organized in partnership with Bank Julius Baer. Fyodor is a student of Elena Berezkina at the Gnessin State Musical College. He is a Fellow of the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation and, last year, he received a Third Degree Grant for Culture and Art from the Mayor of Moscow. Fyodor Orlov est un Artist of Promise de la Verbier Festival Academy cet été. Il a été choisi parmi les meilleurs jeunes talents du piano ayant donné un concert spécial au Zaryadye Hall de Moscou auprintemps. Ce concert réunissait six étudiants issus des principales institutions musicales de Moscou. L’événement a été organisé en partenariat avec la Banque Julius Baer. Fyodor est l’élève d’Elena Berezkina au Collège musical d’État de Gnessin. Elizaveta Ukrainskaia studies with Alexander Sandler at the St Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. She has also studied with Lyubov Rudova at the Special Music School of the St Petersburg Conservatory and with Vera Ovcharova at the Lyahovitskaya Music School. She is a First Prize winner of the International Piano Competition in Bremen (2016), RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (2018), and of the Delphic games (Rostov, 2019). Elizaveta’s performances have brought her across Europe, and to the United Kingdom and America. Elizaveta Ukrainskaia étudie avec Alexander Sandler au Conservatoire d’État de Saint-Pétersbourg N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. Elle a également étudié avec Lyubov Rudova à l’École de musique spéciale du conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg et avec Vera Ovcharova à l’École de musique Lyahovitskaya. Elle est lauréate du Premier Prix du concours international de piano de Brême (2016), du RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (2018) et des jeux Delphic (Rostov, 2019). Aaron Chan pursued his Bachelor of Music with Stephen Rose and Jinjoo Cho at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) and McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he also minored in Music History. He was the winner of the Concerto Competition at CIM (2017), and won the classical concerto competition and chamber competition with his quartet (Lafontaine Quartet) at McGill (2018). He is now pursuing his Masters degree with Paul Kantor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Although born in Canada, Aaron spent his childhood in Hong Kong, where studied both violin and viola on full scholarship to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Junior Program. He won Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the Dutch Oskar Back National Violin Competition (2016) and the Dutch Classical Talent Audience Award (2019), giving him an opportunity to perform throughout his home country. In addition to being active as both a soloist and chamber musician, Pieter was Artist in Residence of the Dutch National Youth Orchestra in 2019. He plays a Marc de Sterke violin with a Sartory bow on generous loan from the Dutch Music Instrument Foundation. Originally from Seoul, Soyoung Cho began violin at age five and the viola at age eight. She entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2017 for viola studies with Hsin-Yun Huang, after having attended the Korea National University of Arts and the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts in the classes of Soonhwa Oh and Seoyoung Lee. In addition to her successes in several Korean competitions, Soyoung won Second Prize at the Johansen International Competition for Young String Players (2015) and Third Prize at the Osaka International Music Competition (2011). She has served as principal violist of the Korea National University of Arts Orchestra, and regularly plays in string quartets and other chamber ensembles. Haeji Kim switched from violin to viola at age 16, falling in love with its mellow tones and unique voice. She enjoys playing in an orchestral setting, having participated in the New York String Orchestra Seminar in 2012 as a violinist and in 2014 as principal violist, and as soloist, having played with orchestras throughout her state of Michigan. Her passion for chamber music was fuelled by summers in residence at the Caramoor and Ravinia Festivals. Haeji studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with Roberto Díaz, Hsin-Yun Huang and Edward Gazouleas, and plays on a viola by Joseph Grubaugh and Sigrun Seifert on generous loan from the Virtu Foundation. She is a member of the LGT Young Soloists, and performs extensively around the globe. Since making her debut in 2010 at the Festival van Flandern, Anouchka Hack regularly performs with various orchestras, such as the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, the Sinfonia Rotterdam and the French Chamberphilharmonic. Anouchka received her musical education as a pre-student at the Musikhochschule Cologne with Hans-Christian Schweiker and from 2014 to 2018 she studied at the Academy of Music in Lübeck with Troels Svane. Since 2018, she has studied with Frans Helmerson in Berlin and at the Kronberg Academy. Anouchka is a scholarship holder of the Mozart-Gesellschaft and Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and plays on a Bartolomeo Tassini cello, Venice 1769. Irena Josifoska graduated from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad in 2013 after studies with Dejan Božić and went on to the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold in the class of Xenia Jankovic. Irena has received more than 40 awards and recognitions, among them a Silver Medal at the Vienna International Music Competition (2018) and a Gold Medal at the Manhattan International Music Competition (2019). She was also the youngest Semifinalist at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2017. Today she is completing her Masters at the Universität der Künste Berlin in the class of Jens Peter Maintz. Ivan Skanavi was born into a family of musicians in Moscow. At six he started the cello and entered music school, where his teachers were Olga Galochkina and Tamara Alekseeva. Later, he studied with Alexey Seleznev at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He is now a student of Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar. Ivan is a prizewinner of several international competitions and a Semifinalist of the Tchaikovsky International Competition (2019). He plays a cello made by the Italian maker David Tecchler from 1698. Ivan Skanavi est né à Moscou dans une famille de musiciens. Thomas Prechal is a student at the Academie Muzikaal Talent (Utrecht) where he receives lessons from Jan-Ype Nota and Michel Strauss. He is a multiple prize winner: winner of the Bohuš Heran International Cello Competition in the Czech Republic (2017), First and Second Prize winner at the Princess Christina Composition Competition (2017 and 2020), First Prize winner of the Concours de Violoncelle ‘Edmont Baert’ in Brussels and Third Prize and Special Prize winner winner at International Cello Competition ‘David Popper’ in Hungary. In addition to playing the cello, Thomas likes to compose and regularly receives commissions. Thomas Prechal est étudiant à l’Academie Muzikaal Talent (Utrecht) où il reçoit des leçons de Jan-Ype Nota et Michel Strauss. After studying with Jérôme Pernoo at the Conservatoire national Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and then in Gautier Capuçon’s Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Caroline Sypniewski perfected her skills with Clemens Hagen at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. She was named Classical Revelation by Adami (2017) and Young Talent of the Music and Wine Festival in Clos-Vougeot (2019) and was awarded the Ginette Neveu Prize at the Carl Flesch Academy (2015) and Grand Prix of the Académie Ravel (2018). Caroline is supported by the Safran Foundation. Xuanhan Xu began her musical studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with Jiwu Li and LiWei Qin. By age 13, she became a student of Gustav Rivinius at the Hochschule für Musik Saar, where she is still studying. Xuanhan Xu won the Fifth David Popper International Cello Competition in Hungary and the 2020 Pablo Casals International Award. She has performed with orchestras such as the Hangzhou and Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestras, the Zhejiang and Harbin Symphony Orchestras, and the National Centre of Performing Arts Orchestra in Beijing—the youngest cellist ever to perform in that venue. Xuanhan has been invited at attend the Verbier Festival Academy this summer as an observing Artist of Promise. Xuanhan Xu a commencé ses études musicales au Conservatoire de musique de Shanghai avec Jiwu Li et LiWei Qin. The Esmé Quartet takes its name from the old French word for loved (‘aimé’). In 2018, the quartet won First Prize and four Special Prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, and was named an HSBC Laureate of the Aix-en-Provence Festival’s Academy. The four childhood friends recorded their first album in 2020, featuring works of Beethoven Unsuk Chin and Frank Bridge. Le Esmé Quartet tire son nom du vieux français « aimé ». En 2018, le quatuor a remporté le Premier Prix et quatre Prix spéciaux à la Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, ainsi que la place de Lauréat HSBC de l’Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. CATHERINE EDWARDS

Atena Carte studied in the class of Jean-François Antonioli at the Conservatoire de Lausanne, where she earned her Soloist Diploma with honours in 2004. She later studied chamber music at the Musikhochschule ZürichWinterthur in the class of Ulrich Koella and obtained her concert diploma there in 2007. Since that time, she has worked as an accompanist for that school’s professional classes and as a piano teacher at the École de Musique d’Aigle. This is Atena’s first year as the Coordinator of the Verbier Festival Academy’s piano class. Atena Carte a étudié dans la classe de Jean-François Antonioli au Conservatoire de Lausanne, où elle a obtenu avec les honneurs son diplôme de Soliste en 2004. Catherine studied the piano with Phyllis Sellick and Vlado Perlemuter and the organ with Ralph Downes and Gillian Weir. She has been the pianist and coordinator of the Verbier Festival Academy’s cello class for a number of years. Tobias Koch’s extensive musical career has taken him across Europe, North America, the Middle East and far beyond as soloist, chamber musician and lied accompanist. He is the Music Prize Winner of the State Capital Düsseldorf and teaches at the Robert Schumann University of Düsseldorf and at the University of the Arts in Berlin. He has been pianist and coordinator of the Verbier Festival Academy’s violin class for a number of years and is a specialist in historical keyboard instruments. La vaste carrière de Tobias Koch l’a mené à travers l’Europe, l’Amérique du Nord, le Moyen-Orient et au-delà, si bien en tant que soliste, chambriste et accompagnateur de Lied. HunJu Sohnn has been the pianist and coordinator of the Verbier Festival Academy’s viola class for more than 20 years. She received her Master’s degree from New England Conservatory, and holds a Doctoral degree for Piano Performance from Rice University. Her teachers included John Perry, Russell Sherman and Robert Roux. HunJu performs throughout Europe and America, while holding a teaching position at the Conservatoire Populaire de Musique Danse et Théâtre in Geneva. HunJu Sohnn est la pianiste et la coordinatrice de la classe d’alto de la Verbier Festival Academy depuis plus de 20 ans. Elle a obtenu sa maîtrise au New England Conservatory et un doctorat de piano en interprétation à la Rice University. Elle a notamment eu pour professeurs John Perry, Russell Sherman et Robert Roux. HunJu se produit dans toute l’Europe et l’Amérique, en parallèle de son poste de professeur au Conservatoire Populaire de Musique Danse et Théâtre de Genève.

ATELIER LYRIQUE The Atelier Lyrique is unique amongst voice programmes in Europe. Singers are accepted for either or both of the Atelier’s opera and / or song programmes. They study their craft with a focus on a tangible project: a semi-staged performance of an opera—Puccini’s La Bohème in 2021—and / or song recitals on the Festival’s Mainstage. Many of the Atelier’s singers are offered opportunities to sing secondary roles in the Festival’s Mainstage operas again this summer: Puccini’s La fanciulla del West and Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde. L’Atelier Lyrique est unique parmi les programmes vocaux en Europe. Les chanteurs sont acceptés pour l’un ou l’autre ou les deux programmes d’opéra et / ou de mélodie de l’Atelier. Ils abordent leur métier autour d’un projet concret : une mise en scène d’un opéra – en 2021, La Bohème de Puccini – et / ou des récitals de chant sur le Mainstage du Festival. Russian-American soprano Erika Baikoff holds a Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a Master’s degree from the Guildhall School of Music. She is also a graduate of the Studio de l’Opéra de Lyon, where she has performed in house productions of Boris Blacher’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges, Nabucco and Romeo und Julia. Notable chamber music awards include first prizes at the Helmut Deutsch International Lied Competition (2019) and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Competition with pianist Gary Beecher. Erika has spent summers at the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie and SongFest. She is part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Welsh tenor Dafydd Jones is currently studying on scholarship at the Royal College of Music, London, with Mark Tucker and Simon Lepper. In 2019, he won the Blue Riband Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He was a finalist in the Brooks Van der Pump English Song Competition in February 2020 and worked in masterclasses with sopranos Louise Alder and Rosa Manion. In 2018, Dafydd had the honour of being the tenor soloist in the World Premiere of Bob Chilcott’s remembrance work Move Him into the Sun conducted by the composer himself. In the summer of 2019, he made his operatic debut as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) in Opra Cymru’s touring production. Le ténor gallois Dafydd Jones étudie actuellement avec Mark Tucker et Simon Lepper au Royal College of Music de Londres, où il bénéficie d’une bourse accordée par l’institution. Eira Huse’s first singing experience was as a member of the Norske Opera’ children’s choir. She has performed at several festivals such as the Oxford Lieder Festival, Kammeroper SchlossRheinsberg and Oslo Grieg Festival, among others. He has had success in several competitions, clinching the top prizes in the Seoul Music Competition, Osaka International Music Competition, Estonia International Competition and Concert Artists International Competition in New York. Edward is supported by the Sheila Saam Memorial and Drake Calleja Trust. His awards, such as a First Prize at the Korea National Singing Competition in Seoul and the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna, as well as his success as Finalist of the 2020 Glyndebourne Cup, underline his excellent reputation. Before joining the troupe of the Theater Dortmund in 2020 / 21, he was was a member of Staatsoper Hamburg’s Opera Studio, where he performed a wide range of repertoire: Gaston and Victorin (Die tote Stadt), Ajax Premier (La Belle Hélène), Abdallo (Nabucco), Joe (La fanciulla del West), Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos). French soprano Mariamielle Lamagat is a recent graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. She began her musical journey studying classical piano, percussion and jazz piano. She went on to the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, where she studied French early music. In 2018, she received Third Prize at the Cesti Competition and was awarded several prizes at the Concours International de la Mélodie de Gordes with her duo partner Virgile Van Essche. Mariamielle’s passion for ensemble music led her to co-found the vocal quartet L’Archipel and the baroque Ensemble Théodora. Mariamielle Lamagat est une soprano récemment diplômée du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Elle débute son parcours musical avec le piano classique, les percussions et le piano jazz, et rejoint ensuite le Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, où elle étudie la musique ancienne française. Being a member of the Opera Scholars Australia program for six years, the baritone has been awarded the Paulette Bisley and Eleanor Blakemore scholarship by the Melba Opera Trust, the Barbara Pigdon Memorial and the John Duncan scholarship. The first ever Michael Stubbs and Malcolm Roberts Opera Prize was awarded to him in December 2020. Canadian mezzo-soprano Jillian Tam has just finished her second year as an undergraduate student in vocal performance at McGill University in Montreal under the direction of Dominique Labelle. Jillian was a student at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in 2018 and this summer, is the youngest singer accepted to the Verbier Festival Academy’s Atelier Lyrique. His recordings range from Lieder to the complete works for piano and violin by C.P.E. Bach. In addition to his extensive teaching activities (Royal Academy of Music, Jette Parker Young Artist Programme of the Royal Opera House, Royal Northern College of Music), he leads the Song Programme of the Verbier Festival Academy’s Atelier Lyrique. She also works for Opera North and acts as a staff accompanist at Trinity College of Music. nPerformances have included recitals for international festivals in Salzburg, Naples, Koscierzyna and Sorrento, as well as at the Wigmore Hall, St George’s Bristol, Aldeburgh Festival, the Italian Institute of Culture in Lisbon and The William Walton Society in Ischia. Emma returns to Verbier for a second time this summer as an Italian language coach. Ken Noda studied with Daniel Barenboim and went on to perform as soloist with such orchestras as the Berlin, Vienna, New York, Israel, and Los Angeles Philharmonics to name a few. He is closely associated with the Marlboro Music Festival and taught at the Renata Scotto Opera Academy at the invitation of Miss Scotto. Since 2009, he has been a regular guest coach and performer for The Song Continues at Carnegie Hall at the invitation of Marilyn Horne. From 1991 to 2017, Ken was Musical Assistant at the Metropolitan Opera to former Music Director James Levine. He retired from his full-time position at the Met as Musical Advisor to the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program in 2019 and continues to coach the programme’s young singers and collaborative pianists under the title of Honorary Teacher. 21C ARTIST PROGRAMME Developing artists for 21st century careers The Academy provides opportunities for professional growth away from the rehearsal room and concert stage too. So much time is spent by musicians finetuning their craft that little thought is often given to where a career is headed. And let’s face it, there’s no one single path. The Academy encourages its musicians to reflect on their own strengths, what brings them joy and how their careers can evolve in meaningful ways. And on a very practical level, through coaching, workshops and peer mentoring, they learn the basics of concert programming and staging, conflict management, financial planning, marketing, public speaking, sound and video recording, and what it takes to build a sustainable career. Mary Javian’s goal as a performer, educator, curator and public speaker is to use music to create positive social change in communities. She has presented around the world in these areas for nearly two decades. Mary has toured and performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and other prominent ensembles as a double bassist. As chair of career studies at the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), she has created a dynamic social entrepreneurship curriculum that develops the entrepreneurial and advocacy skills that 21st century musicians need. Her project-based classes help students create community partnerships that sustain both artistic and social value. L’objectif de Mary Javian en tant qu’interprète, éducatrice, conservatrice et conférencière est d’utiliser la musique pour créer des changements sociaux positifs dans les communautés. Elle a donné des conférences dans ces domaines dans le monde entier depuis près de deux décennies. Theresa Leonard is an internationally recognised music producer and audio educator. She holds a Master of Music degree in sound recording from McGill University and bachelor degrees in both music and education. In her more than 30-year career, she has served as Executive Producer, Music Producer, and Recording Engineer and worked in all areas of music production including research, audio post-production for film and video, broadcast audio, education and programming, administration, operations, and professional recordings for a broad range of international artists. As a classical music producer and accomplished recording engineer, she has produced and engineered over 200 recording projects including Juno award-winning and nominated recordings for many labels. Theresa Leonard est une productrice de musique et une pédagogue de renommée internationale. The Financial Times sums him up as “a virtuoso with formidable fingers and a musician with fiercely original ideas about the music he plays.” His vision is to bring musicians together to explore new ways of presenting classical and contemporary music to audiences through curation, staging, lighting and other technology. In addition to a busy touring schedule, Pedja is Director of Music Progamming at the Baryshnikov Center in New York and Artistic Advisor at Montana’s Tippet Rise. Karen Zorn, President of the Longy School of Music of Bard College (Boston) is a fearless educational entrepreneur. She has established partnerships with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and FundaMusical of Venezuela (El Sistema) to launch innovative programs of study and community engagement. These include the recently launched Take a Stand program and new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Music education programme, based in Los Angeles, as well as teaching by Longy Conservatory students in public schools, community centers, prisons, nursing homes and other external venues where the traditions of music education can contribute to public life. AWARDS PRIX Each year, a number of awards are presented to soloists, ensembles and singers of the Academy who merit recognition or are in need of financial help to advance their musical careers. The recipients are decided by the Director of the Academy after observation of musicians during their time in Verbier and through consultation with Academy faculty. Yves Paternot was an emblematic ﬁgure of the Verbier Festival. A founder of the Friends of the Verbier Festival and member of the Festival’s Foundation Board. In tribute to his commitment, the Prix Yves Paternot recognises the Academy’s most promising musician. The Laureate receives CHF 10,000, an invitation to perform at a future edition of the Festival, and is eligible for a contribution of up to CHF 15,000 to support his or her artistic and professional development. VERBIER FESTIVAL JUNIOR ORCHESTRA JAMES GAFFIGAN MUSIC DIRECTOR The Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra (VFJO) is an international orchestral training programme for musicians aged 15 to 18. Students are coached by a roster of established players from around the globe, many of whom are Verbier Festival Orchestra alumni and who now perform in prominent orchestras. Le Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra (VFJO) est un programme international de formation d’orchestre destiné aux musiciens âgés de 15 à 18 ans. CONDUCTING Valery Gergiev Conducting Mentorship Programme The Academy’s Conducting Programme offers a stepping stone to emerging conductors who are on the verge of leading orchestras at the highest level. The programme was established in 2018 with the arrival of Valery Gergiev as Verbier Festival Orchestra (VFO) Music Director. Throughout the Festival, these young conductors perform assistant conductor duties for Valery Gergiev and other visiting conductors of the VFO and the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra (VFCO). One junior student assists Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra (VFJO) Music Director, James Gaffigan. Le Conducting Programme de l’Academy offre un tremplin aux chefs d’orchestre émergents qui seront bientôt à la tête des formations orchestrales les plus réputées. Lancé en 2018 suite à l’arrivée de Valery Gergiev en tant que Directeur musical du Verbier Festival Orchestra (VFO), plus de 120 candidats ont postulé aux quatre postes disponibles. Un jeune étudiant en résidence, âgé de 14 ans, a été invité en guise d’observateur, afin de réaliser son ambition de devenir chef d’orchestre.

Pianist, composer and conductor Maximilian Haberstock is an eleventh grade student at the Wilhemsgymnasium, as well as a pre-college piano student of Thomas Böckheler at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He has studied conducting for three years and was invited by the late Mariss Jansons to attend rehearsals of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in order to further his studies. This summer, his second time in Verbier as a junior conductor, Maximilian assists the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra’s Music Director, James Gaffigan. Le pianiste, compositeur et chef d’orchestre Maximilian Haberstock est élève en onzième année au Wilhemsgymnasium, en parallèle de ses études en piano auprès de Thomas Böckheler à l’Université de musique et des arts du spectacle de Munich. Il a étudié la direction d’orchestre pendant trois ans et a été invité par le regretté Mariss Jansons à assister aux répétitions de l’Orchestre symphonique de la radio bavaroise afin de poursuivre ses études. Edo Frenkel is a young conductor, composer, and pianist. He is currently Artist in Residence at Cité internationale des arts de Paris as a composer and pianist with his ensemble Collectif Dissensus. He also JPYAP Assistant Conductor of the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and has guest conducted LUDWIG, Baltimore Symphony Musicians, Ensemble Meitar, Ensemble Mise-en. He has performed in numerous international festivals including Aldeburgh, Lucerne, Klangspuren, Grafenegg, Manifeste, and CEME, and, in 2019, he was a featured artist at the Ojai Music Festival. Edo Frenkel est un jeune chef d’orchestre, compositeur et pianiste. Il est actuellement artiste en résidence à la Cité internationale des arts de Paris en tant que compositeur et pianiste avec son ensemble Collectif Dissensus. Ian Niederhoffer is winner of three prizes at the 2021 Khachaturian International Conducting Competition. In 2019, he made his European operatic debut conducting two world premieres at the Wiener Kammeroper with the Vienna Summer Music Festival. While studying at Yale College, Ian founded and served as Music Director for the Yale Undergraduate Chamber Orchestra. He currently studies with Leonid Grin. Ian has been accepted to the Verbier Festival Academy as an Artist of Promise—a young artist to watch! Ian Niederhoffer est lauréat de trois prix au Concours international de direction d’orchestre Khatchaturian 2021. En 2019, il a fait ses débuts européens à l’opéra en dirigeant deux premières mondiales au Wiener Kammeroper avec le Festival de musique d’été de Vienne. Lucie Leguay holds a Masters degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Haute École de Musique in Lausanne. She is also a graduate of the École supérieure of the Hauts de France (Lille) and the Regional Conservatory of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Paris). This year, she was appointed assistant conductor to Mikko Franck at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and in 2019, she won the position of assistant conductor for four orchestras: Ensemble Intercontemporain (Paris) with Matthias Pintscher, Orchestre National d’île de France (Paris) with Case Scaglione, Orchestre National de Lille with Alexandre Bloch and Orchestre de Picardie (Amiens) with Arie Van Beek. Lucie Leguay est titulaire d’un master en direction d’orchestre de la Haute École de Musique de Lausanne. Elle est également diplômée de l’École supérieure des Hauts de France (Lille) et du Conservatoire régional de Saint-Maurdes-Fossés (Paris). Mikhail Shekhtman began piano at age five and gave his debut solo concert in Moscow only two years later under the guidance of his first conducting and piano teachers, Elena Aleksandrova and Vera Khoroshina at the Moscow State Conservatory Academic Music College. He continued his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory under Pavel Nersessian and graduated with distinction in 2013. Since 2014 he has conducted and performed on the piano with leading orchestras throughout Russia, and has worked intensively with opera singers. Mikhail Shekhtman a commencé le piano à l’âge de cinq ans et a donné son premier concert en solo à Moscou seulement deux ans plus tard, sous la tutelle de ses premiers professeurs de direction et de piano, Elena Aleksandrova et Vera Khoroshina, au Collège académique de musique du Conservatoire d’État de Moscou. Mikhail a poursuivi ses études au Conservatoire d’État Tchaïkovski de Moscou auprès de Pavel Nersessian et y a obtenu son diplôme, avec distinction, en 2013.
