DIRECTOR'S NOTE Verb’s 2021-22 season got off to a bang this summer performing before over 3,000 audience members! The dancers were overjoyed to perform in front of live audiences again. The thrill of applause and the in-time reaction to live performance is something we really missed. Most importantly, returning to live performance reminded me how the arts bring people together. As with all outdoor events, there are always challenges with weather, but we made some beautiful memories on stage under starlit skies. This season the company is diving right in and creating three full-length works! It is with much pride that I announce Verb’s partnership with the Dance Institute at The University of Akron in presenting The Akron Nutcracker: A Holiday in the Rubber City at E.J. Thomas Hall. As the Artistic Director of the production, I have worked with many artists in the community to recreate the sights and sounds of Akron in 1935 as well as celebrating the cultural backgrounds of Akron’s citizens. The Verb dancers will join the stage with the Dance Institute and dancers from the University’s Dance program for a reinvention of The Nutcracker. Later in the season, in winter and spring 2022, Verb has commissioned contemporary versions of Romeo & Juliet (with choreography by Joshua L. Peugh) and Antigone (with choreography by Tommie-Waheed Evans). Both ballets are timeless stories of tragedy and love but will be reinterpreted to elevate marginalized voices and reflect our times. Verb will continue to follow all recommended state health and COVID-19 guidelines for public performances. Though entering a theatre may feel different with masks on and the ticket-buying process may require proof of vaccination, the experience of witnessing dance will continue to light up the hearts of our audiences. We are thankful for the support of our audience members, patrons, and funders for making it

JOSHUA L. PEUGH Verb Ballets has commissioned award-winning choreographer Joshua L. Peugh, of New Mexico, to create a contemporized version of Romeo and Juliet. Peugh was the recipient of the Grand Prize at the McCallum Theatre's 18th Annual Choreography Festival and was chosen as one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch." Using the plot and structure of Shakespeare’s play along with the mythology of the story and characters themselves, this new ballet will take an adventurous approach to exploring the intersecting themes of freedom and mortality while reflecting poignant issues of our current political and social reality. Peugh Photo: Brian Guilliaux
moves audiences to understand movement as a universal language, accessible to all. Through his work, he aims for audiences to connect, interact, and react to one another in the depths of our humanness. The production will preview at the Cleveland Public Theatre and makes its world premiere at E.J. Thomas Hall.
TOMMIE-WAHEED EVANS Verb Ballets and Philadelphia-based choreographer Tommie-Waheed Evans will join forces again to create a powerful new work based on the Ancient Greek tragedy Antigone. Verb Ballets has worked with Evans for the past ten years commissioning many of the company’s most recognized works including Dark Matter and Surge.Capacity.Force. Evans is a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow in choreography and a 2021 New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Jerome Robbins Dance Research Fellow. Using his driving urban contemporary ballet movement aesthetic, Evans will synthesize the current political climate with the classical world of Antigone. By placing these ancient Photo: German Ayala Vazquez

QUESTIONS WITH ISAAC HILEMAN
What age did you start dancing? I started dancing when I was seven years old at the Dallas Ballet Center in Texas. I started out watching my sister through the glass doors of the studios and eventually my parents enrolled me in a boys ballet class. What drove you to a career in dance? I began to fall in love with the challenge and nuance of dance, both physically and musically. That passion led me to the University of Oklahoma where I discovered what it means to be an artist within my dancing. Your favorite role or piece to dance? I have so many favorite dances! My favorite full length classical ballet to dance is Don Quixote. At OU, I loved getting to dance Lickety Split by Alejandro Cerrudo, and a new work by Mariana Oliveira called So Near and Yet So Far. How do you stay motivated? I am most productive when I stick to a consistent schedule.

verbiculture | October 2021
If you weren’t a dancer, what would you be? I’ve taken several anatomy and health-related classes and love the idea of working in the health field. My dream job in that field would be a physical therapist or athletic trainer. What is the last book you read? I just finished reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. I always have a sci-fi book I am working on. What are you are looking forward to next? I recently began my professional career post-college at the beginning of July. I am naturally nervous about what “real life” will be like, but I am very excited to see where my life takes me and how my dancing evolves. What is an interesting fact about you? I like to bake. What 3 things would you need if you are on a deserted island? A book, a dance floor, and a kitchen.
Verb Ballets partnered with the Cleveland Dance Movement to bring the community an opportunity to share in South African dance traditions. Sikhumbuzo Hlahleni taught an intergenerational masterclass of South Africa’s dance traditions in the styles of Pantsula, moving through Traditional African to Contemporary African. Together the two organizations seek to bring the area a deeper appreciation and understanding of cultures while finding community in dance. He joined Verb Ballets in 2021 as a part of Verb's International Cultural Exchange Program. He began training at Cape Academy of Performing Arts then continued at the Kaatsbaan International Dance Center under the guidance of Stella Abrera. Before joining Verb Ballets, he danced with the Joburg Ballet and Mzansi Ballet. He has been a wonderful addition to the company and we are honored to have him share South African traditions with the community.

decade. He is the owner and president of J.P. Farley Corporation, an employee benefits business located in Lakewood, which he has run for over 40 years. Jim was first introduced to Verb Ballets through his Pilates instructor, Troy McCarty, who had choreographed a work for the company that premiered at Cleveland Public Theatre. He attended that performance and kept coming back to see more! He brings a wealth of knowledge to the Verb Ballets board and tries to apply what he has learned with his company to Verb—and vice versa. As former board president, Jim worked hard to help grow the company’s revenue above $500,000 and gain more prominence. With active support from other board members, he achieved this goal. He is constantly inspired by the dedication to the craft that those involved with Verb have. He also part of a national trade organization, St. Ed’s Alumni Association, his condo’s home owner’s association, and the Cleveland chapter of the American Heart Association’s Executive Leadership Team. Although he still works full time, he reads a lot, enjoys driving his old convertible, exercise, and looks forward to traveling around Europe post-COVID.

HAVANA TO CLE Cuban dance legend Laura Alonso returned to Cleveland in August for a week-long residency, reuniting with the Verb Ballets dancers. The daughter of world-famous ballerina Alicia Alonso, Laura is an award-winning teacher and coach. Ms. Alonso performed for 25 years with Ballet Nacional de Cuba, and now travels the world teaching and staging classical ballets. She is also the director of ProDanza in Havana, Cuba, which is part of the Cleveland Havana Ballet Project, an ongoing international partnership with Verb Ballets. During her week-long residency, Laura taught Verb’s company class in the Cuban method of ballet. She is the “crème de la crème” when it comes to training dancers in classical ballet technique and over the past several years has instilled a technique and performance quality in Verb’s dancers that is timeless. Having the Verb Ballets and ProDanza dancers perform together in Cuba has added an additional dimension to both company’s performance versatility. During her time at the Verb studio she also staged and coached the romantic pas de deux from Act 2 of Swan Lake. The Cleveland Havana Ballet Project is made possible through past support of the Cleveland Foundation.

The conference is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the company to industry professionals and let them know what Verb Ballets can bring to their stage or venue.
AROUND THE WORLD TO COME HOME Tell us about how your background in dance contributed to your successful career? As a dancer I had to be disciplined in all aspects of my life. There is no substitute for hard work and humility when it comes to being successful as a dancer and choreographer. In addition, it’s important to take risks and try new things without letting the fear of failure stifle you. These habits were invaluable as I pushed myself to take the next steps in my career after leaving Verb. I took chances and put myself out there as a performer and choreographer. Ultimately, this led me to pursue my M.F.A. and seek employment in Kara (Madden) Brems danced for five seasons with Verb Ballets. She went on to also dance with SLATE Contemporary Dance Company in Shanghai, China and Dance in the Annex in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She received her M.F.A. in dance from the University of Arizona in 2019. Her research on the effect of dance in popular culture on dance education was selected to be presented at the National Dance Education Organization’s 2018 national conference. She is now the Assistant Professor of Dance Instruction at Hope College in Michigan and is the dance department’s culture and inclusion champion. Kara is also a certified Vinyasa Yoga instructor and Fletcher-style Pilates instructor. Kara loves to dabble in many other art forms and is a classically trained pianist, a crafter, knitter, amateur potter and a baker of sourdough bread. Kara loves hiking, camping and traveling to new parts of the world to explore different cultures and meet new people. Recently she and her husband Jeff welcomed a new addition to their family. We caught up with her to ask her what she has been up to since leaving Cleveland.

GLIMPSE INTO PROFESSIONAL WORLD OF DANCING Junior Trainee Somiya Schirokauer is 16 years old and attends Shaker Heights High School. She has studied at the Verb Ballets Dance For Everyone program for 3 years. She has been a Junior Trainee with the company since 2020. How did you get involved with Verb’s classes? I started dancing at Cleveland City Dance when I was ten years old. My mother had never danced before and found the “new to ballet” class at Verb Ballets. She really appreciated the teachers’ individualized attention and the supportive atmosphere. Since she loved it so much, I tried a few classes Photo: Kolman Rosenberg (2021)
and fell in love with it too! What have you gained from being a junior trainee? I love being able to watch the company dancers up close and learn from their different strengths and approaches. As a junior trainee I get to learn the repertory with the dancers in studio and have even had the opportunity to perform with the company. I also enjoy that the pieces encompass a wide range of music from classical to rap and dance styles from contemporary to Ukrainian folk dance! What does your typical day look like with dance and school? On a typical day, I attend company ballet class in the morning before rushing to school for the afternoon. In the evenings, I go back to the studio to take Dance for Everyone classes. What does ballet bring to your life? Ballet gives me a chance to express myself, enjoy physical movement, and connect with music! It also gives me a Photo: Bill Naiman (2021)
community of people with shared interest in the arts. What are your career aspirations? I aspire to be a professional dancer in a company with a varied repertoire just like Verb’s. I will be auditioning this winter for traineeships with companies!
Verb Ballets welcomes teens and adults wishing to study dance with its Dance For Everyone Community program. We offer all levels of ballet for all ability levels on an ongoing drop in basis.
