Regrowth Follows the Thomas Fire Flames

B

ig Rock is making a beautiful comeback! Nature is extremely resilient and today post-fire regrowth is on full display at VLT’s Big Rock Preserve. As reported in the last issue of Outlook, the Thomas Fire destroyed 80% of the 1,000 trees planted by the community over the last five years. Within a few months of the fire, those plants that had burned began to regenerate their shoot systems-- this activation of the dormant vegetative structure is known as “crown sprouting.” There are many native plants, grasses, and trees that thrive in a burned landscape. You can visit the Big Rock Preserve along the Ventura River Bike Trail and see hundreds of trees that are green at the bottom and black at the top – a perfect example of nature’s ability to heal itself.

Something else you can’t miss at Big Rock are hundreds of colored flags poking out of the ground. Each flag indicates where one of the 500 native plants and trees replanted by staff and volunteers is taking root, irrigated with VLT’s new tank watering system. The winter rains have really given them a boost! To join in the efforts of continued replanting, keep an eye on VLT’s events page (venturalandtrust.org/events) for future planting events.

Students take part in restoration activities, learn about the Ventura River watershed, identify the plants and wildlife that live there, and study how fires affect the ecosystem. Our hands-on teaching approach has had a healing effect on the land as well as on the students, several of whom lost their homes in the fire.

The question of why devastating wildfires plague California is not a simple one to answer. In an effort to help us all better understand, we have invited the ever-popular Dr. Sean Anderson to kick off our 2019 Environmental Speaker Series on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m., with his lecture entitled, “California Wildfires – the New Abnormal.” Dr. Anderson, Departmental Chair of the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands, spoke to a packed house last year about the causes of the Thomas Fire. He will return to share a one-year-post Thomas Fire recovery report card as well as to discuss the impacts of the Hill and Woolsey Fires, why California’s wildfire season now happens year-round and ways we can work to reverse this alarming trend. Please join us for what will surely be an enlightening evening.

Ventura Land Trust Expands Restoration Services

O

ver the past 16 years, Ventura Land Trust has established itself as expert in habitat restoration. As demonstrated by the impressive transformation we’ve made through restoration work at the Willoughby and Big Rock Preserves plus the additional 60 acres we manage in the Ventura River corridor, VLT has been recruited to do similar work in Oxnard, Camarillo and Simi Valley.

Last May, VLT’s Stewardship staff began working with the California Conservation Corps (CCC) on the Calleguas Creek Trash (TMDL) Total Maximum Daily Load project in Oxnard and Camarillo—an effort to assure that trash pollution in Calleguas Creek does not exceed legal limits. Twice a month, Kate Furlong, VLT Stewardship Director, supervises a CCC crew that surveys the waterway to identify potential pollution sources and quantifies the amount of trash that makes its way via runoff and through storm drains into Revlon Slough/ Beardsley Wash. The goal is to improve water quality in the watershed by keeping trash from entering the creek.

In Simi Valley, VLT manages a similar project along Arroyo Simi Creek. In this location, which feeds into PHOTO BY DAN HULST the Santa Clara River, VLT coordinates the removal of Giant Reed (Arundo donax) and other invasive plant species. Arundo is a nonnative invasive plant that grows quickly to disrupt native ecosystems, crowding out native plants and reducing food sources for native animals.

WILDLIFE PROFILE:

Great Blue Heron

E

ncountering wildlife in its natural habitat can evoke a special feeling, and when the encountered species takes you away to another time and place, the experience escalates. This is the case with the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), a seemingly prehistoric bird that can be seen regularly along the Ventura River corridor. Seeing a Great Blue Heron in flight can make you ask yourself, “Did I just see a pterodactyl?”

With a wingspan reaching upwards of six feet, Great Blue Herons are some of the largest birds you will see in the area, and their sharp beaks and skinny legs only add to their “time since passed” appearance.

Aside from their striking appearance, Great Blue Herons display somewhat normal characteristics for a large wading bird. They live close to water, eat primarily fish, and generally nest in trees or bushes. Herons hunt by stalking their prey. When walking slowly through water, herons keep an eye out for fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and even baby ducklings, spearing with their beaks at lightning speed when they encounter a tasty opportunity. Despite their large size, Great Blue Herons generally weigh about five pounds thanks to their hollow bones. Keep an eye out for a Great Blue Heron the next time you are near the Ventura River Estuary or the Big Rock Preserve!

Dynamic New Trustees Join the Board

T

he Ventura Land Trust Board of Trustees welcomes two new members, Jane Montague and Sunjay Moorthy.

Jane Montague, a Ventura native, grew up spending time outdoors in Ventura’s hills, the Sierras, the Channel Islands, our national forests, and bodysurfing at the local beach breaks. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University with a B.S.E. in Civil Engineering, Jane is a registered California Professional Engineer and a Certified Floodplain Manager who specializes in land, earth and water. She is the 30-year owner of Lewis Engineering.

In addition to serving on the Ventura Land Trust Board, she volunteers with Surfrider Ventura, Ventura Botanical Gardens, Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and Sierra Club where she has participated in and helps coordinate the Wilderness Basics Course program.

Jane lives in Ventura with her husband Curt and two adult children.

She has instilled in her children a great love and respect for our planet and the way we interact with it. Jane is proud to advocate for Ventura County’s natural areas that need human protection.

Sunjay Moorthy grew up in India, England, and all over the United States, finally settling in Southern California for life in 1977. He and his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth, moved to Ventura County in 2007 after sending their daughter and son off to college.

With the understanding that we are all one with an awesome universe, Sunjay follows his passions—golf, baseball, and nature—with actions: he serves on the Board of Governors and is the Men’s Golf Chair at Spanish Hills Country Club; he is a certified umpire for District 63 Little League and Channel Coast Umpires; and he is now honored to join the VLT Board of Trustees as Treasurer to preserve open space in the Ventura area.

he Thomas Fire resonated in everything throughout 2018 and brought hyper focus to what’s most important: our families, our friends, our community.

Looking back, 2017 ended and 2018 began with tremendous sadness and uncertainty. But this past year brought the best out of Ventura County and became the very best year in Ventura Land Trust’s 16year history. Hundreds and hundreds of people throughout the county immediately helped us restore the lands damaged by the fire and hundreds more contributed financially to VLT— many in spite of losing PHOTO BY BROOKE ASHWORTH their homes. And knowing what lies ahead, 2019 is shaping up to be an even better year than last. Many long standing goals will come to fruition, including becoming a nationally-accredited land trust. Only the land trusts operating at the highest standards become accredited, so thank you for making us as strong and resilient as you are.

entura Land Trust was recently recognized as Ventura’s first nonprofit organization qualified as a Green Certified Business by the City of Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division. An Environmental Specialist from the City met with VLT staff to identify our current sustainable business practices as well as to suggest changes that we could make to qualify for certification. In September 2018, VLT was recognized by the Ventura City Council as green certified, adding VLT to the State of California’s Green Business Network.

If you are a business owner, we encourage you to join us and become green certified too. To get started, call the City of Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division at 805-652-4525. It’s free, good for the environment and good for your bottom line too!
