Our 10th Anniversary Extravaganza!

Ten years ago a group of local teenagers set about making a festival inspired by the history of the Edinburgh Fringe, and the counterculture of the 1968-1970 Isle of Wight Festivals.

Many people said it wouldn’t work, that Ventnor was the wrong place, that Parkside similar ideas had been and gone. But f rom the very f irst year it was clear this Free Fringe was different. Artists travelled f rom across Europe to take part, and the f irst audiences embraced it with support Visual Arts that has never wavered.

Performing Arts Now, a decade on, it’s become a unique gathering and the Isle of Wight’s multi Family Friendly award winning arts festival.

This year’s programme has over 90 Comedy & Cabaret different shows and events on offer, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

HOW TO FRINGE

With so much on at the Fringe it can be hard to know where to start! We’ve put together some helpful tips to help you make the most of your time in Ventnor.

Whether you’re a seasoned Fringe veteran, or it’s your very f irst time at the festival, follow our advice and you won’t go wrong!

When in doubt, head to Ventnor Exchange If you’re ever not sure where to go, what to do, or need some advice on how to work your way around the Fringe, your best bet is to make a beeline for the Ventnor Exchange (11 Church Street, PO38 1SW) This is the main Box Off ice and information point where our team is on hand to help.

Variety is the spice of life Ventnor Fringe features just about every artistic discipline you can imagine so don’t just stick to what you know, get stuck in! Explore the Free Fringe Sometimes the best things in life are f ree. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore Ventnor during the Fringe and between ticketed shows. As well as the bars at Harbourside, Parkside, Hygeia House and Ventnor Exchange, which have events happening all the time, there are also loads of buskers, pop up shows and installations to discover.

It’s always fun to explore on the day and see what takes your fancy, but if there are a few key shows you really want to see it’s worth booking quickly as many performances will sell out. In particular look out for shows in smaller venues like Ventnor Arts Club and Hygeia House.

All tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Venues will accept printed tickets or e-tickets displayed on a mobile phone. ID may be required if you have lost your tickets, or if you have purchased a Fringe Friend or concessionary ticket.

Directly opposite Ventnor Exchange, St. Catherine’s is a beautiful church, adapted with modern facilities to make it the perfect place for intimate concerts.

A brand new venue for this year, we’ve been hard at work transforming an old pub in the middle of town into a new hub of creativity. Now named after Ventnor’s emblem, the Greek Goddess Outside is the beautiful 1930’s Parisian of good health, raise a glass to her in ‘Book Bus’ and outdoor seating area the gin bar, explore 10 years of the with a spoken word stage.

Each year Ventnor Fringe transforms a largely unused part of Ventnor Harbour into a temporary space we call ‘Harbourside’.

A vibrant and inspiring meeting place with events for young and old, with live music every day, larger gigs in the evenings and DJ’s at night, helping you dance the night away!

FRINGE CANTEEN This year we’re collaborating with our f riends at The Isle of Wight Street Food Company to create the Fringe Canteen, the festival’s f irst true ‘pop up’ food space.

Located at Harbourside the Fringe Canteen is a space for audiences and artists alike to relax between shows, with an evolving menu throughout the week that specialises in global street food

Parkside is a miniature festival village in its own right, and home to some of the larger shows at the Fringe, as well as being a great spot for families with lots of events and activities for children.

THE MAGPIE A beautiful new ‘Big Top’ tent for our 10th Anniversary which will form the centerpiece of Parkside. COM E DY & CABARET TENT This year we’re playing host to some of the most exciting new stand-ups on the circuit, with a whole selection of Edinburgh Previews f rom acts f resh f rom appearances on shows like Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You. FREE FRINGE

Sometimes the best things in life are f ree and alongside the main programme of ticketed events there is a huge amount of f ree things to see and do at Ventnor Fringe. Here is just a selection of what’s on offer...

ARTS TRAIL Ventnor is full of artists and many of them will be opening up their homes and studios during the Fringe to showcase their work. Follow the red markers on the map in this programme or join the Arts Trail Guided Walk which leaves f rom Ventnor Exchange every day at 12:00.

BUSKING AND ST R E E T AC T S Busking brings the festival to the streets, and throughout the week you’ll spot all sorts of bands and artists performing around the town. The best spots to head to are the Rene Stage (half way down The Cascade) and Harbourside, but also keep an eye out for signs in shop windows, which will list when ‘pop-up’ shows will be taking place in that space. Everywhere f rom a barbers shop to a launderette is taking part!

Located in f ront of St.Catherine’s Church is the Book Bus. A beautiful 1930’s Parisian bus transformed into the perfect bookshop. Featuring buskers and poets each day including a children’s storytelling hour at 11am.

We’ve teamed up with the Lift The Lid to offer an amazing opportunity for young people to go behind the scenes at the festival to meet the artists and crew that make it all happen! Taking part in either a visual arts or performing arts group, there are 10 f ree places available on these 3 day experiences running f rom Fri 26th - Sun 28th July.

New Artworks: Foldarskart / Nightmind / Wallpaper Louise Harris’s startling felted artworks ‘Foldarskart’ refer to the fragile beauty of the native flora of her beloved Iceland. Jez Gray has collaborated with Icelandic artists to create an electroacoustic live performance in response to ‘Foldarskart’. Albedo Marz’s ‘Nightmind’ paintings address the volatile theatre of everyday life - a world in which historical memory lies in ruins as society sleepwalks towards tearing itself apart. Jo Kori shows a series of photographed interactions with wallpaper drawings, alongside her short film based on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’.

WHO AM I? Performance The ‘Who Am I?’ performance is about reversing technology and reflecting on history through music, movement and performance. Where do you come from? Where is your home? Where are you going? Visual and performance artist, Sunara Begum re-imagines our perceptions of origins in a globalised, multicultural world, transforming our bodies into a map with physical and visual theatre and a live soundscape especially composed by Tunde Jegede. COPPERSMITH

Always Room For More Coppersmith, consisting of Glenn Koppany and Linda O’Connor, is an Island based, modern folk duo who play all home-crafted songs. They started off playing in folk clubs before moving on to festivals where they have gained a name for themselves playing festivals both on and off the Island. Last year Glenn won the Watford Folk Club Song Writing Competition with a song called “Mary Gonna Marry a Silkie Boy”, based on the Scottish myths of the Selkies, people who can take the form of either humans or seals. Moving and uplifting with honest lyrics and beautiful harmonies, these are songs you will remember. Coppersmith have just completed their second album, and have a showcase of work on YouTube and Soundcloud.

Arthur plays Violin + Electronics Arthur Sawbridge, violinist and composer, started playing on a 1/16th size instrument at the age of four. In 2010 he swapped orchestras for looping pedals and dived into Oxford's alternative music scene. Earning comparisons to Arthur Russell, Mark Mothersbaugh and Brian Eno, his work has been described as 'palatial minimalism, composed in every sense.' (OTR). Bobby I Can Fly In the mid 1980s local band Bobby I Can Fly once filled venues across the Island on a nightly basis with a raw, brass-driven mix of faux jazz, new wave and classic pop. A one-off reunion to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2014 proved so successful and enjoyable that they have continued to play. Folk At Trinity: Ventnor Fringe Edition Trinity Folk is a club which was started in November of 2017 and has grown in popularity within the local musical community. In Fringe week, we shall be using Trinity Church which has an amazing acoustic. The aim of the club is to give an opportunity to singers, players and listeners to come along and experience all genres of folk music, poetry and prose provided by performers who have volunteered to ‘do their thing’ in front of like-minded, sympathetic people. There is a great variety on offer, from light hearted humour to serious social elements.

Post Animal @ Harbourside The next great band to come out of Chicago. Travelling to Ventnor Fringe as part of their first ever European tour, Post Animal are a band of brothers. Though they formed in 2014 and just began touring in 2017, their affinity for slick riffs, pop hooks, and psychedelic tendencies join them in a bond much tighter than their years suggest. Initially formed when childhood friends, bassist Dalton Allison and guitarist Matt Williams, met keyboardist and guitarist Jake Hirshland, the band’s sound began to take shape when the three enlisted some more pals from both the Chicago music scene and through their time working at local burger joints. Rounding out the band’s lineup, Post Animal is completed by drummer Wesley Toledo and guitarists Javi Reyes and Joe Keery. Sounds like? Think Tame Impala meets King Gizzard in a gig you don't want to miss!

 

Film Night with Hannah George Hannah George is a Ventnor screenwriter and winner of a Writer’s Guild Award for her recent BBC3 comedy sketch. Hannah will introduce a selection of her favourite short films, some of which were shot on the island. Following an interval, at which snacks will be served, there will be a screening of a recent award-winning feature film, chosen by Hannah. Hannah says, “ I chose this film as it’s got a great protagonist at its heart. I love films about people who are striving to make something of themselves when society is telling them they’re not worth it. Also, the soundtrack is great”.

 
