Nine years into our journey and Ventnor continues to chart its own path as the Island’s most eccentric town with Ventnor Fringe as it’s most barmy week of the year.

You can book all Ventnor Fringe tickets through the Ventnor Exchange Box Office with no booking fees for cash or card!

Ventnor Fringe is situated in the beautiful seaside town of Ventnor, on the southern tip of the Isle of Wight. It’s easier to get to than you might think, and it’s well worth the trip.

Ventnor Exchange, 11 Church Street Open from 9am-11pm during the festival

Hovertravel run the fastest crossing to the Island with a regular 10-minute foot passenger service from Southsea. Car ferries are available from Southampton via Red Funnel, and Portsmouth and Lymington via Wightlink.

Once on the island the Island Line train service runs from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin, where a rail link bus connects to Ventnor and Southern Vectis buses run every 30 mins to Ventnor from Newport or Ryde.

It’s this policy that gives fringe festivals their unique spirit and life of their own.

FREE FRINGE

Sometimes the best things in life are free and alongside the main programme of ticketed events there is a huge amount of free things to see and do at Ventnor Fringe. Here is just a selection of what’s on offer...

FRINGE BARS

There are three main bars and social spaces at the Fringe - Ventnor Exchange (which doubles up as the main Box Office), Harbourside on the seafront and Parkside, located in Ventnor Park to the west of the town. Each of these spaces has loads of free and varied entertainment every day. Check out the bar pages for more information.

BUSKING AND ST R E E T AC T S

Busking brings the festival to the streets, and throughout the week you’ll spot all sorts of bands and artists performing around the town. The best spots to head to are the Rene Stage (half way down The Cascade) and Harbourside, but also keep an eye out for signs in shop windows, which will list when ‘pop-up’ shows will be taking place in that space. Everywhere from a barbers shop to a launderette are taking part! vfringe

ARTS TRAIL

Ventnor is full of artists and this year some of them are opening up their studios and homes for you to see what they do. There is a even a free guided walk from Harbourside at midday every day ending up at art_house_life where San Francisco based artist Jeremy P. Morgan has set up a special exhibition of his paintings. Check out the locations for the trail on our map!

WORLD RENOWNED ST R E E T A RT

We are totally psyched to announce we have a very special street art project underway to coincide with this years’ Fringe. World renowned illustrator and street artist Phlegm is creating a bespoke Ventnor artwork on a huge wall in the high street inspired by our town’s unique wildlife and heritage.

Phlegm is famous for creating striking fantastical monotone artworks on buildings around the world and has painted the world’s tallest street art piece in Toronto! You can find the mural at the top of the High Street at the edge of the town centre just before you reach The Library (see our map!)

THE BOOK BUS

Located in front of St. Catherine’s Church is the Book Bus. A beautiful 1930’s Parisian bus transformed into the perfect bookshop looked after by the friendly Tom & Jen. Featuring buskers and poets each day including a children’s storytelling hour at 11am.

One of the highlights of the week is Ventnor Carnival whose barmy parades are the second oldest in the UK! Each parade travels throughout the whole town, finishing up at Parkside. Look out for the Comic Jazz Band, they are a bit of a Ventnor institution!

The Errant Stage located on Harbourside will be hosting Free Fringe acts, previews of theatre shows, talks and watch out for some special performances when the lights go down... The Errant Stage is a uniquely converted van which transforms into an outdoor stage or intimate creative space. Kate and Jonna have been travelling around the UK bringing performance to the community in their travelling venue and we are so glad to have them return!

Local News 1918 Glimpse the lives of those who lived through the Great War as letters, reminiscences and newspaper articles of 100 years ago to the day are brought to life. Tell-Tale Presents as the Time Travelling Broadcast Company have been travelling around the UK since 2014 performing and collecting tales, letters, articles and museum archive resources to create a personalised snapshot of mainland and island life during the war to end all wars told through verbatim readings, physical theatre and storytelling.

Asylum monologues Asylum Monologues, through the voices of three Amnesty members, recounts the real life experiences of Dembe and Julie from Uganda and Marwan from Syria. This hour long piece of theatre explores the decline and projected rise of seaside towns in the UK. Three performers traverse the heyday of Victorian seaside resorts, Punch and Judy, the mods and rockers, the decline in the 1960’s, through to the present day and beyond. The play celebrates the culture and unique identity of seaside towns, as well as exploring the reasons and people responsible for their ruin. The piece spans multiple theatrical styles and art forms.

Billions of refugees are arriving on boats, on a daily basis, to this small Island on the South Atlantic Ocean. Amanda Ferreira, the immigration officer, is on the shore talking to the Europeans refugees about the asylum rules and opportunities for them in her country. In a 50 minutes character comedy, the Brazilian performer Fernanda Mandagar√°, directed by Ramiro Silveira will bring stories, songs, dance, monkeys, lions and make-believe to a solo where meaning challenges.

An evening of eclectic, contemporary folk as Charlie Dore, one of the UK’s most respected songwriters teams up with multi-instrumentalist Julian Littman of Steeleye Span. The pair, friends since they were 16 swap guitars, mandolin, harmonium, ukulele, piano, autoharp, harmonies and stories as they showcase the newest album Dark Matter, dip into the past 5 albums and also share original acoustic versions of hits Charlie has written for others, including George Harrison She may even do a new version of Pilot of the Airwaves but the new songs will stay with you. To launch this year’s Ventnor Fringe, Alessi’s Ark has invited fellow (island enthusiasts) musician/ collaborator Charlotte Carpenter + the poetical forces of Aaron Ross and Solomon Adams to create Stellar Portal, an evening of songs, words, sounds and collaboration, celebrating the interconnectedness of all things and the themes of living close to nature, whether one is a city dweller or island born. Attendees will be led from Ventnor Exchange to the event’s special mystery location.

Trinity Folk is a club which was started in November last year. In Fringe week, we shall be using Trinity Church which has an amazing acoustic. The aim of the club is to give an opportunity to singers, players and listeners to come along and experience all genres of folk music, poetry and prose provided by performers who have volunteered to ‘do their thing’ in front of like-minded, sympathetic people. Inspired by his parents’ birthplaces, ERÍ (Yoruba for ‘testimony’) weaves together stories that span both Britain and Nigeria to create a surreal world of myth and memory. To create this very personal work, Jegede joins forces with the multimedia visual artist, Sunara Begum to bring together a theatrical rendition of their combined journeys. ERÍ is an intimate and intricate coming together of music, movement and text in a tale of what it means to be displaced in the modern world. Created as part of a special Ventnor Fringe residency.

Boomboxes, baggy suits, pogoing, pendulum-swinging kneecaps ‚ÄìStop Making Sense is often described as ‘the best rock movie ever made’. Talking Heads was a band on top of its game in 1983 but the film owes much to the dynamicism and vision of director Jonathan Demme. This is a chance to see it on the big screen and listen in surround sound. Snacks will be served during the film; the bar will be open late with new wave music playing us out.

It’s back but not as you know it, walk and talk is going the other way this time so join us for an informal guided history walk starting at the St. Catherine’s church and going to Bonchurch and back to Ventnor. Along the way we will stop at various historical points and a short talk will be given, from near environmental catastrophes and battles on the beach to poets and Victorian theatre, it is guaranteed to be fun and enlightening .
