H E LLO! Can you believe it’s been a whole year?! Neither can we, and what a year it’s been!

As ever we’ve been busy behind the scenes and we’re over the moon with Ventnor Fringe’s largest programme to date! Well over 100 acts will be performing in 15 venues over 6 days in a unique celebration you won’t want to miss! On top of that there’s the new Ventnor International Festival (VIF) with some of the best new bands from across Europe.

Explore Ventnor’s winding roads and discover a whole host of pop-up theatres, cabaret clubs and boutique bars; from yoga in the park each morning right through to parties on the Harbour at sunset.

Remember to take a risk and try something new - this is a week where we welcome artists from around the world, with everything from bingo hosted by puppets to a Parisian Book Bus filled with poets. Take a chance, explore and have an adventure.

If you’re ever at a loss for where to go, or just need a little inspiration remember to visit the Ventnor Exchange on Church Street. Here you’ll find our main Box Office and festival hub with all the information you need to begin your journey.

A ‘fringe’ festival combines all art forms, from theatre to music, in a programme that is not curated by the festival itself, but by the artists applying to take part.

It’s this policy that gives fringe festivals their unique spirit and life of their own. Ticket revenues for each event go directly to the artist, so whatever show you see helps support them and their work.

Check out the live Fringe Review show every morning at 11am in the Ventnor Exchange, with different live guests each day. There is also a free daily newspaper which goes out across the Fringe, as well as podcasts available to listen to from www. vfringe.co.uk or from the Podcast Caravan in Parkside.

T R AV E L TO VENTNOR The Ventnor Fringe is situated in the beautiful seaside town of Ventnor, on the southern tip of the Isle of Wight. Easier to get to than you might think, and well worth the trip.

Hovertravel run the fastest crossing to the Island with a regular 10-minute foot passenger service from Southsea. Car ferries are available from Southampton, Portsmouth and Lymington via Red Funnel and Wightlink.

Once on the island the Island Line train service runs from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin, where a rail link bus connects to Ventnor and Southern Vectis buses run every 30min to Ventnor from Newport or Ryde.

FRINGE BARS There are three main bars and social spaces at the Fringe - the Ventnor Exchange (which doubles up as the main Box Office), The Observatory on the Harbour and Parkside, located in the main park to the west of the town. Each of these spaces has loads of free entertainment every day.

BUSKING & ST RE E T AC T S Busking brings the festival to the streets, and throughout the week you’ll spot all sorts of bands and artists performing around the town. The best spots to head to are the Rene Stage (half way down the Cascade) and The Plaza, in front of The Observatory, but also keep an eye out for signs in shop windows, which will list when ‘pop up’ shows will be taking place in that space. Everywhere from a barbers to a launderette are taking part!

BOOK BUS A beautiful 1930’s Parisian bus transformed into the perfect bookshop. Featuring live spoken word, poetry and talks each day, as well as a resident cartoonist!

THE ERRANT S TA G E The Errant Stage is a new mobile performance venue in a big red converted van, and it’s launching right here at the Ventnor Fringe!

This off-grid travelling space is the passion project of Kate Powell and Jonna Nummela, aiming to make performing arts more about creative community than competitive industry.

Affordable for artists. Accessible for audiences. Sustainable for the future. We love the concept and it will be hosting a special installation about the Island dialect created by Bristol based artist Steven Sales.

ART E V E RY W H E R E !

This year we have a whole range of visual art installations, including Portrait Of A Town, a huge exhibition of the residents of Ventnor, which you can find located throughout the whole town.

Hong Kong based photographer Derek Man brings his ‘IOW Analogy’ to a pop-up gallery in a shipping container.

Ventnor Arts Collective will be showcasing work from many members all week at Parkside, and an amazing home on Madeira Road is opening its doors to host ‘art_house_ life’, a contemporary arts project launched this year by Joanna Kori and Albedo Marz.

T I MF O O L E RY Timfoolery is all about having fun whether you’re young or a bit older! Get involved and play all sorts of games from old fashioned playground antics to some quirky ones for the clowns out there! Explore funny ways to move or talk, and for the adults it’s a chance to enjoy being young again and very silly!

Musician Chris Davies reinvigorates the film with his skillful composition and live performance using a spectacular array of instruments from around the world to accompany Prince Achmed‚ a journey from the Middle East, to China and beyond.

The Water Babies Following multiple sell out runs at the Ventnor Fringe String Theatre are back with a new show! After a harsh beginning of child labour in an unforgiving world of adults, a little chimney sweep‚ a suffering ends when he is transformed into a water baby. As he plunges into a surreal aquatic world of fish, caterpillars and caddisflies, follow his adventures in the murky depths and become immersed in his floating dream. Performed entirely to specially commissioned music, String Theatre uses long string marionettes and ghostly shadows, to explore the themes of loss, friendship and transformation.

Bottled Up If you were stranded on an island with half a bottle of water, would you share it with a friend? Bottled Up is a humorous tale of two friends on such a journey. This unique combination of traditional and contemporary circus creates something that you won’t have seen before.

Angus Baskerville Magician Angus Baskerville is a Warwickshire based semi-pro/professional magician. He specialises in Sleight of Hand, Mentalism and Grand Illusion with a variety of props including cards, fire, coins, ropes and rings etc. that will blow your mind. He is also part of the Leamington and Warwick Magic Society and travels around the UK frequently to perform. She practices Nichiren Buddhism (Japanese style) and is creating a new album of songs inspired by Buddhist teachings which touch on themes such as overcoming adversity; hope and persistence; and victory and liberation. The Isle Of Wight Analogy Hong Kong born photographer Derek Man brings his Isle of Wight Analogy project exploring britishness on the Island in a unique exhibition space in a container situated on the plaza. His work explores cultural identity and sense of home both in his native home and adopted country. This body of work has been selected by Tate curator Shoair Mavlian for Source Photographic Review 2016.

Discover new sounds on England’s largest island...

Ever since the Ventnor Fringe began we’ve always had some some of the most exciting emerging bands around come down to play intimate shows around the town. From Johnny Flynn and Liam Bailey performing in some of our churches to Hooton Tennis Club in a little woodland stage. From Reeps One in a basement studio to Stealing Sheep in an old warehouse.

Following a pilot last year we’re now over the moon to launch the new Ventnor International Festival (VIF) as the Isle of Wight’s unique take on the metropolitan/ city based music festival. Think Brighton’s Great Escape Festival, but with more unusual venues, a better beach and cheaper pints!

Featuring a carefully curated line up of new bands we think you’ll love who’ve come from across the UK and beyond, it’s a place to discover the next big thing.
