Welcome to the Ventnor Fringe, this year celebrating our 5th Birthday with our most exciting programme to date! Spanning puppetry to comedy, theatre to film the Fringe expands to six days this year promising a whole week of events that will see Ventnor come alive!
up’ cinemas, gigs in locals’ houses, mystery tours, woodland sing-a-longs and parties on the harbour with 360-degree views over the bay! There is also a big programme of family entertainment and our largest every Free Fringe, with busking and street theatre all over the town.
Inspired by the Fringe movement in Edinburgh, its Island counterpart began in similar humble ways. As a team of teenagers we wanted to create a unique gathering of artists where new work could be showcased and audiences exposed to a huge variety of creativity. This year we're very excited to be hosting more than 350 artists, travelling from all over the UK to take part, something we never imagined would be possible!
This year represents a very important milestone for us as the Fringe opens its first permanent home in Ventnor, housing the central box office as well as a record store, bar and arts centre that will remain open year round. Located in the town's former Post Office on Church Street the 'Ventnor Exchange' signals the start of an exciting new chapter.

Fringe Festivals offer a unique atmosphere, with seasoned professionals and first time performers side by side showcasing their work. NEWfor 2014 the WOODLAND
collaboration with QUAY ARTS We're very excited to be working in collaboration with Quay Arts this year on creating The Observatory, a 360 degree bar located on Ventnor Harbour. Redesigned for our 5th year and hosting a whole range of workshops and events as well as the best place to catch DJ's in the evenings. The Plaza at the front of the Harbour will see a number of improvements, with new stalls and a far bigger range of street theatre, buskers and performances, as well as a new pop up Box Office.
Located behind Holy Trinity Church, The Woodland Bar was introduced last year, providing the perfect space to escape from the hustle and bustle of the town and relax. This year, the Moroccan tent (last seen at the Fringe in 2011) makes an exciting return, re-located to the Woodland providing the centrepiece to the area. With live music and performances running every day. The Scout Hut will be transformed into a new venue hosting comedy, magic, music and variety and a whole host of performances and installations will be taking place between the trees!
ventnor BOTANIC garden
Located at the western edge of the town, Ventnor Botanic Garden is a beautiful site spread over 22 acres, famous for its success in growing rare plants and sub tropical species in the UK. We're delighted to be hosting a number of events at the garden this year, with a new studio theatre in the main visitors centre as well as outdoor shows in the gardens themselves.

The Ventnor Darlings Reunion Tour
One of the most original performers on the stage today, likened to the Marx Brothers (all of them at the same time, except the silent one). Eve's Fabaret is a life enhancing mix of her own original songs and a completely unexpected choice of material that has audiences giving her standing ovations for her ebulience, wit and energy in a show full of chaos and nostalgia. The Wife
Return of the Musketeers
What do women really want? Is there one man who has not asked it? Alyson, a wife from Bath describes with hilarious outcomes the five men who have shared her marriage bed. Then she tells the story of a young knight who, having ravished a young maiden is forced, in order to avoid being put to death for his crime, to undergo a test and search the world for an answer to the question: What is it that women most desire? Hilarious, but also deeply poetic and tender, the play digs deeply into the nature of love and marriage relationships.
1643 AD, Cardinal Richelieu hatches a plot to forever change the balance of power in Europe. Other sinister forces contrive to rip France apart. The key to who will win this shadow war relies on controlling the young Prince, and his mother, Queen Anne will go to any length to keep him safe... but who can she trust to keep him safe? Enter our four legendary heroes: D’Artagnan; Athos; Aramis; and Porthos, the Musketeers of the King’s Guard, only they can be trusted to protect the young Prince from any and all who would harm him.

Antigone
The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged)
This is our own version of Sophocles’ classic play, and although we stick to the plot we have, maybe, presented some of the characters in a less traditional way. The story begins after the two sons of Oedipus, the former King of Thebes, have been killed in a war where they fought on opposite sides. The family do, indeed, seem cursed. Oedipus married his own mother after killing his father—although he was unaware of who they were at the time. And as you can imagine, this story doesn’t end particularly well for his daughter Antigone. PIER STREET PLAYHOUSE 8

Three Half Pints
What happens when everything we do is online, when our status in the world is dictated by our digital popularity, and the virtual world controls our actions and lives? Can we ever be truly OFFline again? Offline is a multi-disciplinary piece from ‘For, By, and With Theatre Company’ who formed on the MA Advanced Theatre Practice course at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, that explores views of online acceptance, communication, anonymity, and control.
Family friendly slapstick comedy group the Three Half Pints bring their full side splitting hour of antics to the Ventnor Fringe. Follow the lives of three shorter than average brothers as they slip, trip and tumble their way through a world that is just too big for them. Taking influence from the likes of Charlie Chaplin, the Two Ronnies and Laurel and Hardy the Three Half Pints bring a uniquely hilarious show for the whole family!

Rod Clements
Gypsyfingers
Rod is from Tyneside. He is best known as a member of the much-loved band the from the seventies and eighties, Lindisfarne. He wrote their hit single 'Meet Me On The Corner'. During that time he also toured with the highly-respected guitarist Bert Jansch. Rod has enjoyed a long career in the music business and is a consummate artist who has never rested on his laurels, either as a songwriter or as a live performer. His solo work is delivered in a broad rootsy and bluesy style.
Gypsyfingers are a British cinematic folk, rock and pop duo - the collaborative musical creation of songwriter Victoria Coghlan & producer Luke Oldfield (son of Tubular Bells' Mike Oldfield). Together they blend the genres of folk, pop, spoken word, classical and electronic embedding magical songs in subtle soundscapes. Victoria and Luke play almost all sounds and instruments themselves, creating a modern orchestra of acoustic and electric instruments and textures interwoven with lyrics inspired by life, love, loss and dreams. Their debut album Circus Life was recorded, produced and mixed at Tilehouse Studios, originally built in 1981 for Mike Oldfield. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH 6 FRI 15 th 7.30pm (120m) // £10

Tensheds A much anticipated return after last year’s sell out for the multi award winning Tensheds. The classically trained, husky voiced boogie blues pianist and soulful rocker is critically acclaimed internationally by the likes of Mojo and Uncut. Performing an eclectic set of material from his back catalogue, notably his 5 Star LP ‘Crazy Beautiful’, he will also be playing some new tracks set for release later in the year. His playing has been compared to everyone from Jools Holland to John Mayall – with whom he has performed whilst the intelligent lyrics & passionate songs have been likened to early Springsteen, The Waterboys & Tom Waits.

QWINDETTA CHIVERIN
Qwindetta
Chiverin is a Bristol based music community with strong ties and a lot of love for the Isle of Wight. Recently we brought Island favourites Plastic Mermaids to Bristol for a huge party and now we want to repay the favour by bringing some beautiful and hotly tipped Bristol musicians to the Ventnor Fringe for a special night in the beautiful St Catherine’s Church.
Qwindetta is a wind-quintet, made up of music students and graduates from the University Of Chichester. Our repertoire is made up of a combination of original works for wind-quintet and various arrangements - many of which have been specially written for us by composition students. These include classical works, film scores, child-friendly storytelling pieces, and more. Ventnor Fringe will be our first external performance and our concert will feature a debut performance of Holst's 'Planets Suite' Arranged For Wind Quintet and Piano.

A Slide Guitar Workshop with Rod Clements
With effortless songwriting and beautifully crafted songs, there's no wonder Slombers Woke are gaining great notoriety on the Isle of Wight music scene and further afield. Their melodic, catchy anthems display faultless harmonisation with hints of great British songwriting. As well as their warm reception at this years IOW Festival, they've shared their original songs and harmonies with a range of audiences at Festivals, libraries, bars and bandstands. This year has also seen Slombers Woke taking that wealth of experience into the studio to record their new EP. VENTNOR ARTS CLUB 12 TUE 12 th 6.30pm (120m) // £4
For the purpose of this workshop, slide guitar is defined as the technique and style of guitar playing where the guitar is held normally, and some notes are played with a slide. The workshop is aimed at budding and intermediate players who are interested in adding to their repertoire. Participants should bring their own acoustic guitars and slides, but Rod will have a couple of his own slides. The workshop will be limited to ten participants only, so early booking is advised. Nick Tann “3am” Just over two years ago I made the decision to become a full time musician. Since the adventure started I have found myself playing in Iceland (the country not the frozen food supermarket!), touring with a Celtic rock band in Denmark and now, for the third time, back at the amazing Ventnor Fringe. This time I have my brand new album 3am, a CD I am most proud of. My music references most of my musical influences such as Sting, John Martyn, Counting Crows, Led Zeppelin, Rufus Wainwright and Elvis Costello. THE SCOUT HUT 11 THU 14 th 9.30pm // £5

Five things you (probably) didn't know about the recorder We all remember digging out mangy old school recorders and reluctantly honking away on them. But the recorder is more than a toy with a range of an octave. In 5 things you (probably) didn’t know about the recorder we uncover the secret world of the instrument of all shapes and sizes; with tales of spies, space and more! Dig out your old recorders for the occasion, and we’ll endeavour to reignite the fun in making music with all the family. PIER STREET PLAYHOUSE 8 FRI 15 th 6pm (60m) // £4 (£2)

He is also Director of the Aboyne Cello Festival. All profits will go towards new equipment for the Chemotherapy Unit at St Mary's Hospital. ST. CATHERINES CHURCH 10

FOOD& DRINK
Ventnor is bursting at the seams with an exceptional choice of local eateries and is quickly becoming known as the food capital of the Isle of Wight. In addition to what Ventnor already has to offer, during the festival you can find the Fringe’s food market on The Observatory Plaza. Head down to the seafront for a choice of coffees and treats from Jasper’s Artisan Coffee (IW), fine loose leaf tea from Comins Tea (Dorset), eco-friendly arcadian street fodder from The Cauldron (West Country) and more. Fine tea talks and workshops will also be on offer! At the opposite end of town in The Woodland, The King’s Jive will be serving coffee, tea and cakes with a vintage flair from the back of their Morris Traveller while Little Fat Chef serve up home made meals from locally sourced ingredients. Come, sit back, and enjoy!
