VENT N O R F R I N G E 2 016 Whether it’s your very first visit or you’ve been with us since the beginning, a very warm welcome to the Ventnor Fringe. Spanning puppetry to comedy, theatre to music, the Fringe is a time when Ventnor comes alive for a whole week filled with events of every description! Inspired by the Fringe movement in Edinburgh, this Island counterpart began in similar humble ways as an intimate gathering organised by a team of local students which has gradually grown to host almost 400 performers in this year’s programme! Explore the town’s winding roads and discover a whole host of pop-up theatres, cabaret clubs and cinemas; catch a film under the stars, try yoga in the park or party on the Harbour as the sun sets. There’s a whole world to explore! Remember to take a risk and try something new this is a week where for once a year we welcome artists from around the world and open up spaces not normally accessible to the public. Take the opportunity to explore and have an adventure.

If you’re ever at a loss for where to go, or just need a little inspiration you can visit the Ventnor Exchange on Church Street. Here you’ll find our main Box Office and festival hub with all the information you need to begin your journey. Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who makes the Fringe happen: collectively we’re making something truly unique.

Connect using #vfringe16 @vfringe @ventnorexchange Ventnor Fringe is produced by Becky Boucherat, Joseph Keele-Toms, Mhairi Macaulay, Billy May and Jack Whitewood.

W H AT I S A F R I N G E ?

F E S T I VA L H O S T E L

The Ventnor Fringe Festival is inspired by the famous Edinburgh Fringe and follows the same core principle whereby there is no selection process and 100% of all ticket sales go directly to the artists.

Located in the Victorian mock Gothic gatehouse of the Ease Dene Estate, this new addition provides a fantastic, affordable option for those on a budget. The Hostel is just a stone’s throw from the beach and a ten minute walk into the centre of the town. Prices start at £17.50 per night, book now at www.vfringe.co.uk

By using this model, Fringe Festivals offer a unique atmosphere, where you can find seasoned professionals showcasing their work alongside up-and-coming or even first time performers. Be sure to take a risk, try something new and keep your eyes peeled for surprises along the way!

FRINGE REVIEW The Fringe Review team return once more with their festival round ups. The Fringe’s very own daily newspaper features reviews, news of upcoming shows, artist interviews, festival fashion and slightly questionable weather reports. Collect yours for free from the Ventnor Exchange each day. You can also join the team live every morning at 11am at Ventnor Exchange for The Review Show or head to our website to listen to daily podcasts, and behind the scenes gossip, all available at www.vfringe.co.uk

T R AV E L The Ventnor Fringe is situated in the beautiful seaside town Ventnor, on the southern tip of the Isle of Wight and can be reached easily via Southsea, Portsmouth, Southampton or Lymington. If you're travelling from Southsea Hovertravel run the fastest service with crossings to the Island taking just 10mins. You can also purchase Ventnor Fringe tickets, which include a bus to Ventnor, directly from their website: www.hovertravel.co.uk Car ferries are also available from both Southampton and Portsmouth, via Red Funnel and Wightlink. PARKSI DE Inspired by San Francisco’s urban park-life, this year we’re excited to present ‘Parkside’, a brand new area at this year's festival! A new craft beer bar, an outdoor cinema, and miniature arts and performance venues including a vintage caravan, outdoor library and even a 1930’s Parisian bus are jam-packed all week with poets, writers, artists and musicians. Parkside promises to be a vibrant new addition to Ventnor Fringe 2016 bringing a full programme of events with something to entice and intrigue all ages. There is no better place than here to sit and relax with friends and family whilst surrounded by activities, art and all things Fringe.

OPENING TIMES

W H AT ’ S O N Open from 10am each morning, you can take part in daily yoga sessions, listen to talks from local food producers, participate in the Fringe Forum and enjoy live music all afternoon. Re-fuel from the selection of food on offer, browse the art in the park and have fun with family games and activities. Entry is free during the daytimes and in the evenings our Moroccan Tent hosts some of the best comedy, cabaret and spoken word at the festival. Parkside is also the home of our new Outdoor Cinema, created in collaboration with The Travelling Film Show, which means you can now enjoy films under the stars! Find out what’s showing and when in the Film Section.

TOBY THOMPSON Our very first poet in residence, we’re delighted to welcome Toby Thompson, who will be performing intimate shows for up to five people throughout the week in our vintage caravan Debby located in Parkside. Toby is one of the most inspiring performers we’ve ever seen perform at the Festival, with a uniquely poetic craft and delivery style which is incredibly heartfelt and raw. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience such an intimate show before he returns to much larger arenas. “Toby Thompson is the future.” Kate Tempest "Toby is easily one of the most gifted young wordsmiths I have ever had the pleasure to encounter” Akala Tue, Wed, Thu Fri, Sat 2pm, 2.30pm & 6pm £5

DIZRAELI Dizraeli is a rapper, multi-instrumentalist and sometime singer taking hip-hop to new terrains. First performing at the Ventnor Fringe in 2011 and again in 2013, we’re thrilled to welcome him back as he enters what we think is the most exciting stage of his career to date. After six years pushing boundaries with his band Dizraeli & The Small Gods, winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, receiving regular radio play and spellbinding crowds at festivals across Europe, in September last year Dizraeli left the band to explore new possibilities. His new work, recorded live in front of small audiences in a cafe basement, tackles migration, injustice, the ghosts on Walthamstow Marsh, the brutal nonsense of consumer London, lost and found love, Palestine and the singer’s Dad… It’s head nod-heavy, beautiful, unsugared songwriting unlike anything you’ve heard before. You won’t want to miss this. Sun | 6pm £7

Bane Following extensive worldwide tours and two sell out runs at the Ventnor Exchange in 2015, Joe Bone and Ben Roe return to the Isle of Wight to present the entire collection of BANE performances especially for VIF. The stories follow hit-man, Bruce Bane, as he tries to find out who’s after him. They’re told by actor Joe Bone, who tells the stories like a movie, to Ben Roe’s evocative live soundtrack. All three shows are fast-paced action-packed thrill-rides that take the audience on a rollicking journey through the cinema sodden imagination of this exciting duo. It’s very funny, genuinely entertaining and completely sucks you in. As one of our favourite events to host at the Exchange and we can't wait to bring Bane back this summer. “Epic… This is a fast-talking, quick-moving, smart-thinking little gem of a show.. Entertaining fun and very skillful” THE SCOTSMAN “Rollicking… A remarkable achievement” THE EVENING STANDARD

Stealing Sheep Liverpool's rising psychedelic pop trio Stealing Sheep have been making big waves since the release of their second album 'Not Real' on Heavenly Recordings in 2015. Described by The Guardian as a “visionary adventure” the band, consisting of Rebecca Hawley, Emily Lansley and Lucy Mercer, manage to combine a contemporary and even futuristic electronic sound with a more traditional pastoral, folk base. Eccentric but brilliant, these are ones to watch! Stealing Sheep's performance in Ventnor will be in a new mystery venue that we have created especially for the Festival. Ticket holders will be sent the address of the venue 24 hours before the event or can choose to be taken to the space from the Ventnor Exchange. Thu | 8pm £12

BOOGIE BELGIQUE Undoubtedly one of the big hits of last year’s Ventnor Fringe, The Blind Mole's Ball, located in a network of forgotten rooms beneath the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, returns as our unique late night party. Inspired by a secret traditional gathering that was held by smugglers living along the Undercliff, The Blind Mole’s Ball was the most secret of societies. This year we revive this lost tradition once more and will be opening up new rooms for you to explore. We’re very excited to be welcoming back Boogie Belgique to provide a unique soundtrack to the evening, this year as a full band. The recording name of young Belgian producer Oswald Cromheecke, Boogie Belgique uses old jazz and swing samples to create new sounds. Although loosely 'electro swing' his extensive output over 4 albums takes the genre in some interesting new directions exploring trip-hop, abstract beats and electronic sounds. Sat | from 9.30pm £15

Welcome to the very first Ventnor International Festival, a hand selected programme of events featuring artists from both near and far curated by the team at Ventnor Exchange. Running alongside the ever growing Ventnor Fringe, these events have been selected to compliment and expand the existing programme by showcasing some of our favourite artists as well as commissions made especially for the Festival. Tickets for all events are available through the Ventnor Fringe Box Office and both events share the same venues and bars so you can move seamlessly between the two. Keep an eye out on our website and social media for last minute additions and secret shows taking place throughout the week! Find out more at vif.org.uk
