Scottsdale’s Loved its Pets and Mascots

With dog parks. horse trails, pet resorts and even a pet pantry/food bank, it’s easy to see why WalletHub recently named Scottsdale the most pre-friendly community in America. So what’s Scottsdale’s back-story of accommodating and celebrating our beloved pets and mascots?

Founder/namesake Chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife Helen retired to Scottsdale after his last U.S. Army posting at Fort Huachuca in 1892. They brought along a ‘retired’ Army mule, Old Maude. The mule was a wounded war veteran, having taken a bullet in the leg during the Apache Wars. Scott invited Scottsdale children to sit atop Old Maude during community gatherings. He also had Scottsdale’s first artist, Marjorie Thomas, paint the town’s treasured mascot; that oil painting of Old Maude is now part of Scottsdale’s Public Art collection. In 2007, a community-based effort raised money to have George Ann Tognoni sculpt a likeness of Scott, Helen and

Marjorie Thomas had an affinity for animals of all kinds, from cats, to horses (hers was named “Rags”), mules and lambs. Her paintings show life as it was for ‘man and beast’ during Scottsdale’s first decades as a farm town.

When Scottsdale High School opened in 1923, it needed a mascot and team name. The beaver was chosen, since the animals lived in irrigation canals and laterals throughout the Valley. Some old-timers clarify that those furry canal denizens were actually muskrats, but those didn’t seem appropriate for a team name. Alumni of the school, which closed in 1983, still gather to celebrate being “Beavers Forever.” Other Scottsdale area high schools honor animals/birds: Saguaro Sabercats, Chaparral Firebirds, Desert Mountain Wolves, Horizon Huskies and Cactus Shadows

A white mule named “Snowball” served as the mascot for the Camelback Inn during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Snowball appeared as a goodwill ambassador at local and out-of-town events, wearing a blanket that proclaimed the mule to be “The World’s Most Celebrated Jack Ass.” During the 1951 Sunset Pinks fashion show. staged on a runway the length of Main Street, Snowball was tinted pink to match the show’s theme and stood at the end of the runway.

In the early 1950’s a colorful character named Don Pablo operated a curio shop in downtown Scottsdale. He had a pet monkey that greeted customers.

Don Pablo relocated his House of Relics to the northeast corner of Pinnacle Peak and Scottsdale roads in the late 1950s; it’s unknown what became of the monkey.

Robert Maytag, who had a life-long interest in animals of all kinds, and his wife Nancy, were the prime movers and shakers behind establishing the Phoenix Zoo in the early 1960s. While the zoo was in the planning stages, the Maytags began accumulating animals, which took up residence in the backyard of the Maytag home in Paradise Valley. Maytag’s widow Nancy recalled during a 2002 interview that they hosted “two zebras, a woolly monkey, the lowland gorillas Hazel and Mongo, a small elephant named Heffalump, a gibbon money and lots of birds” in their backyard. To promote the zoo, Bob took his animals to cocktail and dinner parties, and delighted the students at nearby Kiva Elementary School with visits.

Another pet memorialized in a public art sculpture is former Mayor Herb Drinkwater’s dog Sadie. Herb and Sadie stand watch near City Hall.

The Parada del Sol – Scottsdale’s oldest signature event – could also be dubbed the Parada del Pets. From Saint Bernards, to Arabian horses, to miniature horses and more, the annual parade features mascots and pets of all kinds; and plenty of ‘pooper scoopers’ marching with them.
