These packs are filled with non-perishable meals and snacks to be distributed weekly to local Phoenix schools. Packs will provide meals and snacks to children who rely on schools for two out of their three meals Monday to Friday and will ensure children eat throughout the weekend, returning to school on Monday morning ready to learn.

The bus will leave The Homestead at 7:15 a.m.; actual volunteer time is from 8 to 11 a.m.The $5 fee secures your spot. Transportation, water, and a DC Ranch Gives volunteer shirt are provided. Scottsdale Properties Honored in May MAY 2018

National Historic Preservation Month is celebrated each May. This a great time to appreciate Scottsdale area properties and sites listed on the national and/or local historic registers.

Since its inception in 1966, the National Historic Preservation Act has placed eight Scottsdale properties on the National Register of Historic Places. They include: Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and School of Architecture (1937); the Titus House on south Hayden road (1892); Scottsdale Grammar School, now home to the Scottsdale Historical Museum (1909); the Edward L. Jones house in Paradise Valley (1920s); a petroglyph site in northern Scottsdale (1998); the George Ellis house at Cattle Track (1930s); the Valley Field Riding and Polo Club near Papago Park (1936); the Roald Amundsen Pullman car at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, which three U.S. presidents used for travel (1920s); and the Kerr Cultural Center, once home to Louise Lincoln Kerr and now an ASU performing arts venue (1940s).

The City of Scottsdale established its Historic Preservation Program in 1997; the first properties were listed on the city’s historic register in 2000. Citizen members of the Scottsdale Historic Preservation Commission continuously evaluate properties for potential listing, then make

recommendations to the Scottsdale City Council. To date, 25 properties have been listed on Scottsdale’s register.

Although not listed on the Scottsdale register, the oldest man-made structure in Scottsdale is the Arizona Canal, completed by W.J. Murphy, his wife Laura and their construction crew in 1885.

Built to provide irrigation for farms and ranches across the Valley, the Arizona Canal prompted settlement of the Scottsdale area beginning with the Scotts’ homestead in 1888. Today, the canal banks have become a multi-use gathering place in Scottsdale’s downtown.

Scottsdale’s most recycled historic building is the Scottsdale Grammar School, affectionately called the “Little Red Schoolhouse.” Since opening for the 1909-10 school year, it has served as the town’s single elementary school, the Coronado ‘head start’ school for immigrant children, Scottsdale Town Hall, Scottsdale Police Department (and jail), Scottsdale Public Library, Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center and, finally since 1991, the Scottsdale

Historical Society’s museum. Not a bad lifespan for a building that cost $5,000 when voters unanimously passed the school bond for its construction. Nearly torn down during an urban renewal project in 1968, the historic site became the rallying cry that led to the formation of the Scottsdale Historical Society, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. On May 23, 2000, the schoolhouse became the first property listed on Scottsdale’s historic register.

In addition to most of the properties listed on the National Register, others on Scottsdale’s historic register include:

the 1910-vintage Cavalliere’s Blacksmith Shop, the 1921-vintage

Farmer’s State Bank of Scottsdale (Rusty Spur), the 1929-built U.S. Post Office Building (Porter’s), Scottsdale Grammar School #2 (Loloma School) that opened in 1928, Johnny Rose’s Pool Hall (Mexican Imports) built in 1923, the 1933-vintage Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Church, Saba’s Department Store (opened as Sterling Drug Store in 1921), Hotel Valley Ho which opened in 1956, the 1955-vintage Craftsman Court, Adobe Apartments that were built in 1953, Pink Pony Restaurant (opened in 1954 as the Sprouse-Reitz store), Sugar Bowl Restaurant (opened in 1950 as Western Motor Service), Charles Miller House that was built circa 1913 and moved several

times, the Villa Monterey Units 1-7 Historic District (1961-69), the Village Grove 1-6 Historic District (1957), Town and Country Historic District (1958-59), Glass and Garden Church built in 1966, the Holy Cross Lutheran Church built in 1961 and the First Church of Christ, Scientist built in 1962. Although some of the properties are in private hands, many are open to visitors, such as the Scottsdale Historical Museum, Old Mission Church, Taliesin West and the Amundsen car at the railroad park. Customers/patrons are welcome at Saba’s, Mexican Imports, the Sugar Bowl, the Rusty Spur, Hotel Valley Ho, Kerr Cultural Center and at the businesses in Craftsmen Court. The Scottsdale Artists’ School (Loloma School) offers art classes; galleries at Cattle Track offer a variety of arts and crafts for sale.
