Scottsdale’s Historically Summer Cool-downs By Joan Fudala, community historian

We love Scottsdale, but there’s no getting around the fact that June through September are really hot. How have we kept our cool throughout the summer months…especially before air-conditioning? Army wives at Fort McDowell in the 1880s and settlers in 1890s Scottsdale wrote about trying to sleep on hot nights. Homes had sleeping porches, and residents would move cots onto the porch to sleep. They’d often wrap themselves in wet sheets, hoping for some evaporative cooling relief. To avoid the invasion of ants, scorpions and other critters into their beds, the outdoor sleepers would put each bed-leg in a pan of water. Scottsdale’s pre-air-conditioning residents built their homes to get maximum effect from breezes and shade. Many lived in tent homes, which were wood framed with large canvas flap ‘windows’ that could be raised to catch a breeze. Electricity didn’t come to Scottsdale until 1918, so cooking was done on wood or oil stoves, and mostly done in outdoor, open-air ramadas adjacent to the main house to avoid head and the danger from fire. Perishable food was kept in a desert cooler – an orange crate covered with wet burlap. Children and adults alike swam in the canals and laterals, which were not yet concrete lined or fenced off. Horse and cattle tanks and troughs on farms and ranches also became makeshift swimming pools. The first traditional swimming pools in Scottsdale were located at guest ranches/resorts, like Jokake Inn (1928), Camelback Inn (1936) and Kiami Lodge (1937). The Royal Palms Inn on Camelback road had a tile-lined pool in the shape of a heart, making it a popular honeymoon destination.

Swimming has always been a summer pastime in Scottsdale, as these three ladies in the 1930s are ready to cool off in a canal or cattle tank on their property. Scottsdale Historical Society photo

Through the 1950s, Scottsdale was centered around Scottsdale Road and Main Street. Scottsdale Road was lined with tall cottonwood trees, creating a cool tunnel of shade. Only a few streets were paved; generating dust during dry times and a mess during monsoons. General store owner E.O. Brown (also the founder/namesake of Brown’s Ranch/DC Ranch) installed the town’s first ice house on the southwest corner of Brown and Main in the early 1920s, soon after Scottsdale got electric service from the then-new Scottsdale Light and Power Company. Refrigeration was heralded by all! Guest ranches and health camps in the pre-World War II Scottsdale area closed for the summer (May through October). It wasn’t until the mid-1950s when the Hotel Valley Ho and Safari Hotel opened that resorts and hotels stayed open year-round. Unlike now, when we bunker in air-cooled homes, offices and entertainment venues, early Scottsdale residents spent summers outside. As a farming and ranching community, most work was done out in the heat. In the evenings, people gathered for Scottsdale Blues baseball games, ice cream socials and picnics on the canal banks. With few cars on the roads, kids played marbles out on the unpaved streets, rode their horses or went on church-sponsored outings to Tempe Beach.

E.O. Brown installed an evaporative cooler at his general store on Main Street in The 1920s, finally bringing refrigeration to Scottsdale. Scottsdale Historical Society photo

Future mayor Malcolm White opened Scottsdale’s first movie theatre in 1948, the T-Bar-T on the south side of Main Street (its marquee is still there above a bakery), offering a cool place to be entertained. Prior to the T-Bar-T, Scottsdalians had to drive into Tempe (to Red Harkins’ original cinema) or downtown Phoenix to see a movie. In 1947, Arizona State College took over the former Thunderbird II training base (now Scottsdale Airport/Airpark) for a technical training school. Veterans using their G.I. Bill benefits learned the new technologies of home and automobile air-conditioning maintenance.

Keep your cool this summer!

Graves Guest Ranch cottages and most homes in 1910s Scottsdale had canvas flaps that could be raised for a breeze and lowered for shade. Scottsdale Historical Society photo

The Vision of Family Promise is a community of whole and healthy families. At Family Promise, we give families the tools and training to care for their children, find employment and housing, and become independent and successful. We strive to provide a safety net for children and their families before they drop into a cycle of endless shelters, loss of school attendance, unemployment, family instability and foster care. Family Promise is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, independently affiliated with a national organization founded in 1986 and comprised of 200 affiliates in 46 states (www.familypromise.org). Family Promise operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and only serves families with children. More than 60% of our clients are children.
