Golf in 2nd Century in Scottsdale By Joan Fudala, community historian
As you eagerly await your next tee time, or make plans to attend the Waste Management Phoenix Open, golf is on your mind. Did you know that golf has been a Scottsdale tradition for over 100 years? The first golf course in the U.S. opened in 1888 in Yonkers, NY – the same year Chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife Helen homesteaded land that became Scottsdale. Phoenix Golf Club, the first course in the Arizona Territory, opened in 1899 near today’s Arizona fairgrounds. That club evolved into the Phoenix Country Club, now located at 7th Street and Thomas Road. Golf came to Scottsdale in 1909/10 when W.J. Murphy and his son Ralph opened a 9-hole course at their Ingleside Inn. Ingleside Golf Course featured all-dirt fairways and sand greens, with the Arizona Canal serving as a water hazard. Among celebrities playing the course was U.S. Vice President Thomas Marshall. Today, Ingleside’s layout lies beneath the Arizona Country Club golf course.
Scottsdale Country Club
With water for courses scarce, and a modest economy based on farming and ranching, golf in the Scottsdale area was slow to grow in the early 1900s. There were fewer than 20 courses in all of Arizona prior to World War II. The Phoenix Open golf tournament began as the Arizona Open in 1932, played at the Phoenix Country Club. During its initial years, the winner’s purse was less than $1,000, and players often stayed in the homes of the sponsoring Thunderbirds. In 1955, the Arizona Country Club (converted from the Ingleside course in 1946) began hosting the Phoenix Open every other year, alternating with the Phoenix Country Club. In its first year in Scottsdale, Gene Littler won the tournament, Arnold Palmer made his debut and 7,000 attended. Due to flat layouts at Phoenix and Arizona Country Clubs, spectators often used cardboard periscopes to watch the play. In December 1953, the Sundown Ranch Golf Course opened north of Scottsdale’s then-municipal boundary. Golf legend Ben Hogan often used the course to tune up his game; local high school teams held inter-scholastic tournaments at Sundown. A 1955 ad listed weekday public greens fees Ingleside golfer from SHS as $2/weekends $3 and resort guests played free. Today the course -Scottsdale’s oldest, continuously operating public layout – is Starfire at Scottsdale Country Club (redesigned in the 1980s by Arnold Palmer). During the 1950s and 1960s, many public and private courses opened in the Scottsdale area: Paradise Valley Country Club (1953; President Eisenhower played there in 1958), Valley Country Club (1956; now part of The Phoenician); Century Country Club (1957; now Orange Tree), Indian Bend (1959; now site of Salt River Fields ballpark); Mountain Shadows executive course (1959); Desert Forest (1962); Coronado (1965); the original Boulders (1969) and Ironwood (1960s; a rough desert layout near Jomax and 62nd Street). Most hotels offered putting greens for guests. McCormick Ranch became Scottsdale’s first master-planned community in 1971, and expanded the Scottsdale golf course lifestyle, and was followed by Pinnacle Peak (1976), Desert Highlands (1983), Gainey Ranch (1985), Troon Country Club (1986), TPC Scottsdale-Stadium Course (1986), Desert Mountain’s six courses (1987-2003), Troon North (1990 and 1995), Grayhawk (1994-95), DC Ranch (1997 and Silverleaf in 2002), and many more throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. Desert Highland hosted the inaugural Skins Games in 1983 and 1984, with golf icons Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson playing the desert layout. ESPN broadcast to a worldwide audience, showing Scottsdale at its beautiful best over Thanksgiving weekend. The Phoenix Open moved to TPC Scottsdale in January 1987 and began attracting record crowds during tournament week (over 500,000 in 2016). Beyond golf, the Bird’s Nest and the 16th Hole have become legendary. Now…go make some golf history of your own!
