Streets, Communities Named to Honor Scottsdale History

Streets and master-planned communities in northern Scottsdale have names that honor individuals in our history. Here are a few name origins: Bell Road – Harvey Bell, along with James Shea, attempted to build a canal in the early 1900s to bring irrigation to Paradise Valley, according to an article in a 2000 edition of The Arizona Republic by Bob Petrie Butherus Drive– Daniel C. Butherus was the President of the Arizona Conference of the Seventh Day Adventists, which had taken over the land of the former Thunderbird II World War II pilot training base in 1953. In 1960s, the Adventists deeded part of their land to the City of Scottsdale to establish Scottsdale Municipal Airport.

Cavalliere Park – Adjacent to land owned by the late George “Doc” Cavalliere along Alma School Road, the park’s name pays tribute to a man and his family who were blacksmiths/ornamental iron artisans and owners of two of Scottsdale most beloved, former Western-themed restaurants: Reata Pass and Greasewood Flat.

DC Ranch – Once part of E.O. Brown and partners 44,000-acre cattle ranch (1916 to 1950s), the master-planned community took its name from what Brown and his family called the lower part of the ranch. The original “DC” came from a brand that Brown acquired from “Doc” Crosby; the Brown family referred to the “DC” as standing for either Desert Camp or Dad’s Camp.

Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard – The famed architect established his winter residence and school of architecture at the southern foothills of the McDowells in 1937.

Greenway Road – the Greenway family was closely associated with the Roosevelts.

John Greenway was one of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and a Spanish American War hero. Isabella S. Greenway was a lifelong friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, and served as U.S. Representative from Arizona 1933-36.

Hayden Road – Named for the family of Wilford Hayden, who farmed just south and east of the original Scottsdale town site from the late 1890s through the 1950s. Many erroneously think it honors Charles T. Hayden, founder of Tempe and father of U.S. Sen. Carl Hayden.

Kierland Boulevard, Commons and master-planned community – The Herberger family owned the land on which Kierland is situated, and initially developed the site along with Woodbine Southwest in the 1990s. The late Mrs. Katherine “Kax” Herberger’s maiden name was Kierland.

Miller Road – Named for Charles Miller, a businessman and farmer in Scottsdale in the early 1900s. He made part of his land available for Scottsdale High School (1923-1983) to be built on Indian School Road, and was a partner in the town’s first electric company and bank.

Pima Road and Pima Freeway – honors the Pima Indians, who were early settlers of the area and presumed descendants of the Hohokam People. U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes officially established the what is now the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in 1879.

Scottsdale Road – Named for Scottsdale’s founder and namesake U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife Helen, who established a homestead at what is now Scottsdale and Indian School roads in 1888.

Thompson Peak Parkway – Named for Thompson Peak, one of the tallest mountains in the McDowells (and the one with the cluster of antennae on top). Still wondering who Thompson was and why the peak was named in his/her honor.

Thunderbird Road – Named for the World War II pilot training airfields operated by Southwest Airways: Thunderbird I in Glendale and Thunderbird II (now Scottsdale Airport, the Seventh Day Adventists Thunderbird Academy and the Scottsdale Airpark); the road connected to two airfields.

Troon Village and Troon North – Developed by Jerry Nelson in the 1980s and 1990s, Tom Weiskopf designed both communities’ golf courses. Since Weiskopf won the British Open at Royal Troon in 1973, that name was selected for the new championshiop courses.
