Cure-ating Scottsdale’s Health & Wellness History DEC 2018

One of Scottsdale’s greatest assets is its health and wellness infrastructure – from natural resources like a warm, dry climate, to major medical centers, renown researchers, resort spas and year-round outdoor activities for all fitness levels.

Let’s ‘cure-ate’ some of Scottsdale’s health and wellness history: Indigenous people living in the Scottsdale area for an estimated 8,000 years were first to discover the curative powers of local plants and climate.

In modern times, the first doctors to come to the central Arizona Territory were U.S. Army surgeons assigned to Fort McDowell, 1865-1890. Among those was “Doc” Crosby, whose registered brand for livestock was “DC,” and is the origin of the “DC Ranch” symbol.

Scottsdale founder/namesake Chaplain Winfield Scott, who was wounded three times during the Civil War, found Scottsdale’s climate easier on the lingering aches and pains of his wounds. He also recognized the healthful benefits of growing and sharing fresh produce from his ranch. He encouraged other war veterans to come to the tiny settlement of Scottsdale for its healthful and agricultural opportunities. Scott and his wife

Helen welcomed many seasonal guests to live in tent homes on their property with the purpose of restoring their health. During his tenure as a Territorial legislator, he (unsuccessfully) advocated for a sanitorium to be built in Scottsdale.

Scottsdale’s first combination guest ranch and health camp opened circa 1910 on the northwest corner of Scottsdale and Indian School roads. Graves Guest Ranch, operated by Ed and Mary Graves, accommodated winter visitors as well as those with lung ailments, arthritis and other maladies. Although there were no medical personnel in Scottsdale at the time, guests benefitted from the warm, dry winter climate; clean air not polluted by factories; the ability to get gentle exercise outdoors (like croquet, horseback riding or walking in the sunshine); and the availability of locally-grown citrus, fruits, vegetables, milk, beef and poultry at every meal.

Several small, private sanatoriums opened in the desert north of Scottsdale in the 1910s and 1920s, operated by the Weavers, Mrs. Witt, the Pringle sisters and others, providing respite for those suffering from tuberculosis and lung ailments.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Scottsdale babies were mostly delivered at home by midwife Lorena Steiner

and Dr. Benjamin Moeur of Tempe (who served as Governor of Arizona from 1933-1937).

World War One veteran Dr. Spencer Whiting was one of the first resident doctors in Scottsdale, holding office hours at his home on the south side of Main Street (formerly the home of E.O. Brown).

The buildings that had interned German prisoners of war in Papago Park during World War II were converted for use as the Phoenix Veterans’ Administration hospital until the VA built its facility on Central and Indian School in 1951.

With a population and business boom in the 1950s, Scottsdale families created demand for a local hospital, not wanting to drive into downtown Phoenix for in-patient care. Two hospitals opened in 1962: City Hospital of Scottsdale on Osborn Road in May and Physicians & Surgeons Osteopathic Hospital on McDowell at Granite Reef in July.

City Hospital became Scottsdale Baptist Hospital in late 1962 and grew its Osborn campus to include two patient towers by the early 1970s. In 1971 a non-profit governing board assumed responsibility for the hospital, renaming it Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. SMH expanded northward when it opened the Piper Clinic on Shea in 1978; in 1984 Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North opened on the site.

Mayo Clinic Scottsdale opened on East Shea Boulevard in June 1987; Mayo Hospital opened on Mayo Boulevard in 1998.

The Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center opened on the Scottsdale Healthcare (formerly SMH-North) campus in 2001.

Scottsdale Healthcare-Thompson Peak Hospital opened in Grayhawk in 2007.

Scottsdale Healthcare merged with John C. Lincoln, and renamed the combined, Valley-wide healthcare system HonorHealth in 2015.

The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine opened on Mayo’s Scottsdale campus in 2017.

With so many health and wellness options, and a continuing tradition of ‘medical tourism,’ Chaplain Winfield Scott would surely be proud that his dreams for Scottsdale as a place for healthy living have been fulfilled.
