Historic Gems Define Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley has many distinct milestones of its own but also shares history with its neighbor to the east, Scottsdale. The Town of Paradise Valley (“PV”) incorporated May 24, 1961 -- to ensure its character and vision remained intact when neighboring cities eyed the area for annexation – but its origins go back much further. Here are just a few of PV’s historic highlights: In the late 1800s, surveyors named an area that extended from the western foothills of the McDowell Mountains to the eastern slopes of the Phoenix Mountains “the Paradise Valley,” acknowledging the areas lush desert beauty.

In 1906, the U.S. Geological Survey named the uniquely-shaped mountain between Phoenix and Scottsdale “Camels-back.”

Circa 1914/15, Hans and Mary Weaver operated a private sanitarium north of today’s McDonald Drive.

Mrs. Witt also operated a sanitarium nearby for those with lung ailments. The Weavers used part of their land to establish Camelback Cemetery. Throughout the 1900s, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley residents were interred there, including numerous war veterans.

George Judson opened the private Judson School in Paradise Valley in 1928. It was a renowned academy, attracting students from throughout the U.S. and overseas, and closed in 2000 for redevelopment.

Jack Stewart, with financial backing from John C. Lincoln, opened the Camelback Inn in 1936. It became a social hub for seasonal visitors as well local residents, and hosted bond drives and “R&R” vacations during World War II. Stewart sold the resort to the Marriotts in 1967.

The Grubers opened El Chorro guest ranch in 1937, then converted it into a restaurant on Lincoln Drive; it remains a popular gathering spot.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, small guest ranches thrived throughout PV, with colorful names like Echo, Kachina, Kiami, Flying T, El Tambo, Geronimo Ranch, Yellow Boot, Sun and Sage and Diamond K. George Borg of the Borg Warner company in Wisconsin bought the former Kellogg residence in the 1940s and converted it into the Casa Blanca Inn, complete with a landing strip and riding stables. It closed in the 1980s.

The Paradise Valley Country Club was established in 1953, its golf course opened in 1954 and its first clubhouse opened in 1955. Pres. Ike Eisenhower played the course several times; a future vice president – Dan Quayle – lived with his family along one of the fairways.

Artist Lon Megargee’s home on Palo Christi was converted into the Hermosa Inn in the late 1940s, and closed after a fire in 1987. Fred Unger acquired the property and completely renovated it into a boutique resort in 1994, along with its signature restaurant, Lon’s.

Actor John Ireland, local investor Bill O’Brien and others opened the Paradise Valley Racquet Club in 1956 on McDonald Drive. It later became John Gardiner’s Tennis Ranch, host of U.S. Congressional golf tournaments. It is now The Sanctuary Resort & Spa, with its signature restaurant, Elements.

Friar Owen DaSilva founded the Franciscan Renewal Center/Casa de Paz y Bien in the former Kachina Lodge on Lincoln Drive in 1951.

Scottsdale Unified School District opened Kiva Elementary School on McDonald Drive in 1957.

Artists Lew and Mathilde Schaefer Davis operated the Desert School of Art during the 1950s at the present site of the PV Town Hall.

Jim Paul developed Mountain Shadows Resort in 1959; it later became a Del Webb property. The par-3 Mountain Shadows Golf Course opened a few years later, and homes were added surrounding the resort. The original resort closed and was razed in 2004; a completely new Mountain Shadows Resort & Spa opened on the site in 2017.

Paradise Valley resident Sen. Barry Goldwater unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Lyndon Johnson for the U.S. presidency in 1964, holding many campaign events at the Camelback Inn. In 2004 PV dedicated a park and sculpture honoring the late senator, who died in 1998.

Del Webb opened La Posada Resort on Lincoln Drive in 1978. It was redone as the Montelucia Resort in 2008.

In 1981, Paradise Valley resident Sandra Day O’Connor became the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, serving until her retirement in 2006.

Today the Town of Paradise Valley has a population of 12,820 (2010 U.S. Census) on a land area of 16.5 square miles. According to the town’s website, it is “predominantly zoned single-family housing but is also home to 9 resorts, 15 places of worship, 11 public and private schools, 3 golf courses and 4 medical centers.”
