Nick Tsontakis was born at home in Kostadiana, a tiny village located off the northwest coast of Crete. He came into this world in a bedroom with corner windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. He grew up gazing at some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet. When his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he marveled at the aesthetic magnificence of Old Montreal and the innovative structures and international pavilions of Expo ‘67. Living in Montreal, Nick graduated from McGill University School of Architecture with Distinction, and was the principal in Nick Tsontakis

Revisit Scottsdale’s Tourism History By Joan Fudala, community historian
America salutes its visitor industry during National Tourism Week, May 7-13. Integral to Scottsdale’s identity and cachet, tourism/hospitality is among the community’s top employers and economic drivers. How did it all begin? Tourism in Scottsdale started as a cottage industry, literally. In 1897 Howard and Ida Underhill opened their ‘cottage’ on the northwest corner of Indian School and Scottsdale road to a few paying winter guests. Ed and Mary Graves took over the property circa 1910, renamed it Graves’ Guest Ranch & Health Camp, and welcomed visitors as well as those recuperating from a variety of ailments. Guests played croquet, thrived in the warm, dry winter climate and enjoyed home cooked food, most of which was grown on Scottsdale farms and ranches. Without air conditioning, Graves’ and other guest ranches were only open November to April.

WJ Murphy and his son Ralph opened the Ingleside Inn between Indian School and Thomas roads circa 1910 as a luxury resort. It included Scottsdale’s first golf course – 9 holes on dirt fairways with sanded greens. U.S. Vice President Thomas Marshall and his wife Lois Kimsey Marshall stayed at the resort before building their winter home on Indian School road in 1914. Mildred Barthalow turned the 1897-vintage Blount home into The Adobe House guest ranch in 1926, operating it until the 1950s. The guest ranch – located where the Civic Center Library parking garage is today -became Scottsdale’s first library in 1955; it burned down in the early 1970s. Sylvia Evans and Lucy Cuthbert opened the Jokake Inn circa 1928, adding accommodations to their tea room on the southeast slopes of Ingleside Inn Entrance-girls-car Camelback Mountain. The Frank Lloyd Wrights stayed there before building Taliesin West in 1937. The Inn still stands on the grounds of The Phoenician Resort. Lottie Sidell operated tourist cottages on the north side of Main Street between Brown and Scottsdale roads in the 1920s and 1930s. Her cottages became The Village Patio Shops after World War II (now Frontier Village). John C. Lincoln provided the financing and Jack Stewart used his resort management experience to open the Camelback Inn in 1936. Celebrities from JC Penney, to Mary Pickford, to Clark Gable and John F. Kennedy stayed there in the Inn’s early days. Before World War II, visitors to Scottsdale inns and guest ranches usually came by train, stayed for the entire winter season, and ate most meals at their resort. Until the Hotel Valley Ho and Safari Hotel opened in 1956, Scottsdale area resorts, hotels and guest ranches closed for the summer. Families relocating to Scottsdale to work at Motorola kept these modern hotels busy through the summer. Elizabeth Arden opened the Scottsdale area’s first health spa in the late 1940s, Maine Chance, on what is now The Phoenician Resort grounds. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower was a frequent guest. During the 1950s, attractions and events were established to entertain tourists and residents. Arts and crafts shops opened throughout Scottsdale, and events like the Parada del Sol parade and rodeo, Spring Training baseball and the All Arabian Horse Show began. Scottsdale adopted the slogan “The West’s Most Western Town” to create an image made popular by movies and television shows. New restaurants offered cuisines ranging from cowboy, to Mexican to fine dining. Throughout the 1970’s to the present, resorts became more luxurious, often included golf courses, tennis facilities and spas, and moved north as Scottsdale annexed land toward and beyond the McDowell Mountains. Thanks to the booming tourism industry, one might consider Scottsdale a “company town” – we love company!
