McDowell Sonoran Preserve Happenings MOUNTAIN BIKE – BIKE THE DIABLOS JANUARY 18th @ 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead, 30301 N. Alma School Parkway Scottsdale, AZ 85262 This is an advanced beginner to intermediate ride where you should be able to ride a pace of 12 miles in 2 hours, are comfortable shifting gears and managing your speed on the trails. We will explore the north central area of the Preserve with an excursion into the less radical areas of the Diablo trails. It will be perfectly acceptable to walk your bike over some short challenging stretches. Stops will include interesting points you may have sped by before. We’ll add thoughts on improving technique, enhancing safety awareness and increasing overall enjoyment on the trails. Come prepared to ride with a mountain bike (and knobby tires), helmet, water, and snacks.

Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours including breaks and discussions. Arrival time: 8:45 am. Location: Brown’s Ranch Trailhead.

Scottsdale’s Car-crazy Culture

Scottsdale comes down with a serious case of ‘auto-mania’ each January. The Barrett-Jackson and Russo & Steele classic car shows/auctions, and several other car events, bring hundreds of thousands to the Scottsdale area to savor the chrome, fins and horsepower of auto history.

Scottsdale’s love affair with everything vehicular dates back over 100 years.

Motor vehicles appeared in the U.S. in the 1890s, and in the Phoenix area circa 1900. By 1905 there was a motorized ‘stage’ (bus) between Phoenix and Scottsdale over routes of unpaved horse trails.

The same year as Arizona statehood, 1912, Phoenix hosted a car show, and a well-publicized road race took place between San Diego and Phoenix. The winning time was 19.5 hours; Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood was the celebrity starter. Car racing was a popular attraction at the Arizona State Fair. Arizona Highways began publishing in the 1920s to promote the use of the state’s developing highway system.

Scottsdale businessmen E.O. Brown, Charles Miller, William Kimsey and Wilford Hayden were among the first local car owners. Their Model T’s served as transportation as well as engines for running farming/ranching equipment. All four men have Scottsdale streets named in their honor.

In the 1910s, guests arrived at Scottsdale’s Ingleside Inn via a motorized stage.

Walter Smith opened Scottsdale’s first car dealership in the 1910s. Mort Kimsey ran the first gas station on the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Main Street. Several emporiums on Main and Brown had gas pumps out front for the convenience of customers.

The Scottsdale School District acquired its first bus – a REO – in 1923 to transport students to Scottsdale Grammar School (today’s Scottsdale Historical Society museum).

Up through World War II, only small sections of Scottsdale Road and Main Street were paved. The Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Street Paver’s Ball to fund watering or oiling streets to control dust.

Prior to World War II, most tourists came to Scottsdale by train and stayed for the season, relying on resort/guest ranch on-site services, meals and transportation. After the war, when rationing ended and the 1950s car culture took off, Scottsdale hurried to pave streets and redesign its downtown to accommodate parking. New resort hotels, like the Safari and Hotel Valley Ho, catered to new, short-stay driving visitors who wanted to venture off property for meals and fun.

Among skills taught to veterans using G.I. Bill benefits at Arizona State College’s trade school at the former Thunderbird II airfield (now Scottsdale Airport and the Thunderbird Academy) from 1947 to 1953 were car repair and upholstery.

By 1954 car traffic increased to the point that the newly-incorporated Town of Scottsdale erected its first four stop signs, earning the nickname “Stops-dale.” Hallcraft and other new homes included carports and attached garages in their Mid-century Modern designs.

Like the rest of 1950s/60s America, Scottsdale loved drive-ins: Bimbo’s and A&W were among the first eateries here; Prestige offered drive-through dry-cleaning service; the Glass and Garden on McDonald was the area’s first drive-in church, with car speakers available for parishioners in the parking lot. The Round-up on Thomas was Scottsdale’s first drive-in movie theater.

Race fans flocked to the Beeline Dragway near Scottsdale in the 1960s.

Headquarters for Malcolm Bricklin’s gull-wing sports cars was in Scottsdale during the 1970s; the Scottsdale Police Department briefly leased three.

George and David Ellis built several cars at their Cattle Track workshop that raced in the Indianapolis 500.

The Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction began in 1967 as Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes.

Held at Scottsdale Stadium, it benefitted the Scottsdale library. Throughout its decades, the Barrett-Jackson has been held at the Safari Resort, Phoenix Muni Stadium and at WestWorld since 1989.

Other car events in the Scottsdale area have included Good Guys, Kruse, Gooding and the Saturday night McDonald’s Rock n Roll Classic Car Show at the Pavilions at Talking Stick.“Start your engines!” We love our cars!
