Scottsdale Has History of Making Music

December is perhaps the most musical month of the year, when holiday tunes kindle memories and the concert season is in full swing. Has Scottsdale always been a center for music and musicians?

Consider these notes from Scottsdale’s musical score: Founder Chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife Helen started several Baptist churches throughout the West before establishing our town in 1888. In each town and Army post they served, the Scotts started choirs and concert series. Chaplain Scott was known to have a good singing voice. The day after Scott and the other townsfolk erected the first wooden schoolhouse here in September 1896, they held an ecumenical church service, followed by a concert at which three students played mandolins.

Helen and Walter Smith were Scottsdale’s first professional musicians, establishing a home here in 1903. He was a violist; she was a pianist who gave town children piano lessons.

As Scottsdale’s Hispanic population grew during the cotton boom of the 1910s, the sounds of mariachi music were heard throughout the town. In the late 1940s, mariachis of the Old Mission Church/OLPH became an integral part of the annual Miracle of the Roses pageant, staged every December to commemorate Our Lady of Guadalupe.

During the 1920s and 1930s, outdoor concerts were held in Echo Canyon on Camelback Mountain and at the Civilian Conservation Corps-built amphitheater in Papago Park.

As the post-World War II “West’s Most Western Town” slogan promoted, Scottsdale was a great place to hear cowboy and country music. The Western Gentlemen performed at Cavalliere’s Reata Pass near Pinnacle Peak. Waylon Jennings and Glen Campbell were among the popular Country/Western singers here during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, performing at JD’s and Wild Bill Moses.

Louise Lincoln Kerr, daughter of John C. and Myrtie Lincoln, came to Scottsdale in the 1940s after playing violin with the Cleveland Symphony. She established a home and studio near Scottsdale and McDonald roads where musicians gathered and performed. After her death in 1977, her home became an Arizona State University performing arts venue, now on the historic register.

Anne (Mrs. Fowler) McCormick established the Indian Arts & Crafts Center on the McCormick’s cattle and horse ranch in the early 1950s. Musician Ed Natay and his wife, Native American artist “Pop” Chalee, lived and worked at the center. Natay was among the first artists recorded by the then-new Canyon Records of Phoenix, cutting an album of Native American songs.

Dolan Ellis, now Arizona’s official balladeer, performed as part of the New Christy Minstrels during the 1960s folk music era, and played at his Tuba City Truck Stop in downtown Scottsdale.

Official Arizona Historian Marshall Trimble got his start as a musician during the folk era, too, performing locally as part of the Gin Mill Three (before becoming a Coronado High and Scottsdale Community College teacher).

During the heyday of the Safari Resort (1956 through the 1970s),its French Quarter nightclub attracted renowned vocalists like Rosemary Clooney and big bands.

The Bennie Gonzales-designed Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts opened in October 1975.

Opening act was country singer Roger Miller.

The Scottsdale Symphony was founded in 1975 and was a popular classical music group until it disbanded circa 2009; its long-time director was Irving Fleming. Now Scottsdale audiences enjoy classical concerts performed by the Scottsdale Philharmonic.

In the late 1980s, Mayor Herb Drinkwater bestowed honorary Scottsdale citizenship on world-class violinist Isaac Stern, who had family and friends here and often performed at the Center for the Arts.

Fender Guitar moved its headquarters to the Scottsdale area in 1991.

Numerous rock musicians have called Scottsdale home: Stevie Nicks, Alice Cooper, Nils Lofgren and others.

Jazz musicians have also found a place in Scottsdale, where audiences have heard Margo Reed, Alice Tatum and others over the years.

The Musical Instrument Museum (“The MIM”) opened on Tatum boulevard in April 2010, and has become a ‘must see’ attraction that also holds concerts year-round.
