Scottsdale Has Celebrated Earth Day Every Day
April 22 marks the celebration of Earth Day. Scottsdalians, however, have been celebrating their connection and commitment to the environment long before the national eco-event began in 1970. People indigenous to the Scottsdale area – ancestors to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian and Fort McDowell Communities – thrived by living off the Sonoran Desert, then taught early settlers from ‘back East’ how to use native plants and materials to build homes, feed families and soothe aches and pains. After Scottsdale’s founding in 1888, residents built their homes and farms using natural products: mud and straw for adobe, desert brush for the roof over cooking ramadas and stone for building. In the 1930s, George Ellis used recycled redwood from an abandoned irrigation flume to build his family home in what is now the Cattletrack artists’ enclave. Scottsdale’s Hispanic community made thousands of adobe bricks on site to build the town’s first Catholic church in 1933. Scottsdale’s first electric service was generated using water power from the Arizona Falls hydro-electric station, circa 1918. Most residential, business and municipal power is now provided by Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project and/or Southwest Gas, all leaders in environmental stewardship and innovators in the renewable energy field. The earliest guest ranches in Scottsdale – dating back to 1910 – were the forerunners of today’s ‘eco-tourism.’ They provided guests, many of whom came to Scottsdale to restore their health in the warm, dry climate, a variety of outdoor activities, from catered picnics in Echo Canyon, to healthy meals created from locally-grown citrus, vegetables and olive-fed poultry.
Scottsdale introduced ‘desert golf’ at Desert Highlands Golf Course in 1983, an environmentally-friendly concept that conserves water and incorporates natural features in its layout. Scottsdale also pioneered the use of recharged water for irrigating golf courses. In 1937, Frank Lloyd Wright established his School of Architecture at the foot of the McDowells, calling it Taliesin West. He taught his apprentices the principles of organic architecture, showing them how to use natural materials and environmental features in their designs to create a man-nature harmony. Scottsdale area garden enthusiasts established the Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park in 1939, highlighting the beauty and diversity of plants that thrive in arid environments. In the 1980s/90s, Scottsdale enacted a strict Native Plants Ordinance in order to protect Sonoran Desert plants, trees and cacti. Scottsdale has been good at ‘recycling’ its buildings. For example, the Little Red Schoolhouse, built in 1909 for $5,000, has been used as Scottsdale Grammar School, Coronado School, Scottsdale Town Hall, Scottsdale Police Department, Scottsdale Public Library, Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center and, since 1991, the Scottsdale Historical Museum. After World War II, the general store at Brown and Main was recycled into the Arizona Craftsmen Center, which launched Scottsdale’s reputation as an arts, crafts and fashion center. The 1928-vintage Loloma School has served as an elementary school, cable television offices and as the Scottsdale Artists School since 1993.
The Scottsdale City Council enacted a strict sign ordinance in the early 1960s to maintain the scenic views and aesthetics of the community. Coupled with design review standards, Scottsdale residents and visitors have enjoyed the beautiful mountain and desert views without man-made visual clutter or billboards. During the eco-aware 1970s, Coronado and Saguaro high school students started recycling clubs and held collection drives. In 1996, with encouragement from the next generation of students, the City began curbside recycling. With an eye toward preserving newly-annexed land that included the McDowell Mountains, Pinnacle Peak and vast acreage of undeveloped desert, Scottsdale enacted the Hillside Ordinances in the 1970s. Struck down as unconstitutional, this land-friendly law was replaced in the 1990s with the Environmentally-Sensitive Land Ordinance. In the early 1990s the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust (now Conservancy) helped Scottsdale residents and City officials realize the immediate need to protect the McDowell Mountains and Sonoran Desert from over-development. In May 1995 voters approved a slight increase to the sales tax in order to fund purchases of mountain land. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve was created in October 1994, and after many land purchases, now contains over 30,000 acres that will be preserved in perpetuity. Hurrah!
In 2005 Scottsdale established the Green Building Policy for new City buildings and remodels, becoming the first municipality in the nation to adopt a LEED™ Gold policy. The City has also encouraged many private entities to ‘build green.’ One of the first was the sanctuary at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church (2001). One of the most recent was Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (2015), which is replete with environmentally-friendly design elements and functions.
