Nick Tsontakis was born at home in Kostadiana, a tiny village located off the northwest coast of Crete. He came into this world in a bedroom with corner windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. He grew up gazing at some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet. When his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he marveled at the aesthetic magnificence of Old Montreal and the innovative structures and international pavilions of Expo ‘67. Scottsdale Has Delicious Culinary History By Joan Fudala, community historian
Scottsdale diners can celebrate our community’s delicious history of eating and drinking every day, but particularly during April’s Scottsdale Culinary Festival. How have our palates evolved over the decades? After homesteading in 1888, Scottsdale’s founder Chaplain Winfield Scott grew barley, grapes, figs, alfalfa, plums, pears, oats, nectarines, raisins, peaches, apricots, peanuts, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, lemons, potatoes, limes and almonds on his Scottsdale ranch. He would take a basket of his latest produce to reporters at The Phoenix Herald, thus becoming among the first food public relations people in the area The Ingleside Inn, the town’s first luxury resort (1910) offered meals of olive-fed turkey and fresh citrus fruit from its own orchards. During the winter, the Inn took guests on elegant picnics to Echo Canyon. During Scottsdale’s first five decades, dining at a restaurant was rare; the term “eating out” usually meant dining under the family’s shade tree or taking a picnic to the Papago Buttes.

Scottsdale’s first cafes opened in the 1920s and 1930s – Hamer’s and the Pima Café. Hamer’s was likely the first to serve alcohol, as Scottsdale was founded as a ‘dry’ town long before Prohibition went national. Scottsdale didn’t have electricity until 1918-19, so cooking was done on woodor oil-fired stoves, usually outside in a ramada in order not to heat up the interior of the house. Without electricity, there were no refrigerators, so perishables had to be kept in a “desert cooler,” a wet piece of burlap covering a slatted crate that created evaporative cooling. In order to help raise funds to build Scottsdale’s first Catholic church in 1933, the ladies of Scottsdale’s Hispanic community – led by Mrs. Corral – sold home-made tamales at community events. The Corrals later opened Los Olivos restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale, which is still operated by the family. In 1937 part of the Judson School for Girls was converted into El Chorro Lodge, a charming inn and restaurant on the desert. Now 80 years later, the cozy eatery still serves the inn’s signature sticky buns.
Ingleside Guests Echo Canyon - S H Sphoto
Date ranches producing plump, juicy Sphinx and Medjool dates thrived in Scottsdale and the Valley in the 1950s. Sphinx Date Co. Palm Pantry on Scottsdale Road south of downtown still offers Arizona-grown dates and date products, from bread to shakes, and ships worldwide. Proof of the slogan coined in the late 1940s, “The West’s Most Western Town,” Scottsdale restaurateurs capitalized on the Western theme. Pinnacle Peak Patio and Reata Pass served cowboy fare in far north Scottsdale from the late 1950s until 2015. The Red Dog Saloon opened on Scottsdale Road in the late 1950s, complete with a larger-than-life nude portrait of Rosie above the bar. Dale Anderson managed the Gay Nineties/Western-themed Lulu Belle at Scottsdale and Main, and opened the Buckboard at Scottsdale and Thomas roads. We also had the Crystal Pistol and Handlebar J’s (still open, and originally Wild Bill’s) at Scottsdale and Shea, and Rawhide’s Golden Belle Saloon and steakhouse, just to name a few. Yee-haw!

Perhaps the oldest eatery in northern Scottsdale is the Pinnacle Peak General Store, opened in 1975. The Scottsdale Culinary Festival premiered in 1978. A modest but beautiful event held inside the Scottsdale Center for the Arts and sponsored by The Men’s League, the event involved a handful of food vendors offering tastes of their best dishes. The festival’s purpose has been to raise money for Scottsdale arts programs. Today, the Scottsdale League for the Arts stages multiple events throughout the festival that culminate this year on April 8 & 9 on Scottsdale Civic Center Mall. That’s just a taste; now, let’s eat!
