During WWII the Southwestern US, from California to New Mexico, was chosen as a major flight training site by the Air Force of the US and other Allies. The McDowell Mountains have also witnessed a tragedy that left a scar still visible today. The human interest aspect of each story is revealed through maps, photos and media clippings showing the type of aircraft, date of disaster, flight path, the recovery efforts and media coverage.

Historically Made in Scottsdale By Joan Fudala, community historian

When someone boasts, “We have it made in Scottsdale,” they’re really making a double entendre. We not only are fortunate to live here, we also have many products that historically have been made here. In the earliest days of Scottsdale – around 1900 – the Scottsdale area was known for its citrus fruit. Ingleside – today’s Arcadia area – had acres of orange and grapefruit groves that surrounded the Ingleside Inn, golf course and homes. Products grown here and shipped elsewhere bore a colorful “Ingleside” label on their crates, with the slogan “Pride of Arizona.” The metro Phoenix area, including Scottsdale, became a major date-growing area after World War I. The Sphinx Date Ranch opened in 1951 on Lafayette in the Arcadia area, growing Sphinx and medjool dates and operating a small tea room. After several moves and changes of ownership over the past six decades, residents and visitors alike can still buy Arizona-grown dates and locally-made date delicacies at the Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry on Scottsdale Road. In 1946, Tom Darlington opened the Arizona Craftsmen center at Brown and Main in downtown Scottsdale, initially housing artisans like Lloyd Kiva, Wes Segner, Mathilde Schafer Davis, Sandy Sanderson, Lew Davis and others. Their hand-crafted pieces and fashions helped Scottsdale morph into the “Arts & Crafts Capital of the Southwest,” as proclaimed in a Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce ad in the 1950s. Kiva bags – leather purses in the style of a Navajo medicine bag – were extremely popular with winter visitors. Hand-crafted fashion were created throughout 1950s downtown Scottsdale; Life Magazine ran several features highlighting fashions from Scottsdale.

La Solana Potteries made its pastel-colored, Mid-Century Modern style tableware in downtown Scottsdale for over three decades. Joan Fudala photo

George Bergstrom formed La Solana Potteries in Scottsdale in 1953, locating its workrooms, kiln and offices on Second Street in downtown Scottsdale. The oven- and table-ware came in four pastel colors and had the simple lines of other Mid-century Modern home accessories. In addition to being sold around the country, Solanaware also became a ‘gift with purchase’ item at retailers, such as gas stations and grocery stores. Each piece carried a gold and red sticker proclaiming it was from Scottsdale, Arizona. La Solana Potteries moved from its Second Street location in the 1980s, and the building became the location of the Scottsdale Farmer’s Market (now approximately where HonorHealth’s oncology center is today). The highly collectible aqua, yellow, mauve and sage green ovenware can often be found on ebay and in antique shops. Paolo Soleri came to Scottsdale in the late 1940s to study architecture at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. In the 1950s he began creating distinctive bronze wind bells, initially selling them from a kiosk at the Kiva Craft Center on Fifth Avenue. Soleri later opened his foundry and shop on Doubletree Ranch Road, where the late architect/artist’s apprentices still create the world-renown wind bells.

Lloyd Kiva and apprentices created a distinctive leather purse, known as the Kiva bag, from the Arizona Craftsmen center at Brown and Main in Scottsdale. Scottsdale Historical Society photo

Although Karsten Solheim first made his revolutionary putters in his Phoenix garage in the 1960s, he shipped them to customers from a Scottsdale post office. Early versions of PING putters then took on the name of that post office, and were called the Scottsdale putter. Over the past several decades, many specialized and mass-produced golf clubs have been designed, made, tested and/or headquartered here. Scores of entrepreneurs have started their companies and manufactured products here, from Arizona Sun, to China Mist Tea, to Fairytale Brownies, to Goldwater salsa products, to craft beers and more. Larger companies, like Motorola/General Dynamics, Dial/Henkel, Taser, Dillon Precision and others, have had a major presence in Scottsdale, have been major employers and have had their product names associated with Scottsdale.

Some companies have moved to other locations; others continue to be mainstays of our economy and product identity cachet.

The Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry carries on the tradition of earlier date producers in the Scottsdale area. Joan Fudala photo
