Understanding Measurements of Light

Here we explain the difference between the different ways of measuring the brightness of light.

> LUMINOUS FLUX & LUMENS

The amount of visible light that the human eye can see in all directions is known as the luminous flux. Luminous flux quantifies the overall perceived brightness of a product. This is useful for products like worklamps where overall light output is important.

Luminous flux is measured in lumens (lm). The higher the lumen rating the brighter the light will be, and the lower the lumen rating the dimmer the light will be.

> RAW LUMENS & EFFECTIVE LUMENS

Raw lumens - a theoretical rating that doesn’t take factors such as product housing into consideration. It’s only a measure of the LEDs themselves, not an assembled light.

Raw lumens = lumen rating per LED x number of LEDs in the light.

Effective lumens - takes into consideration any energy lost from heat, product housing and the stabilisation of light. This is the most accurate reflection of the luminous flux.

> LUMINOUS INTENSITY & CANDELAS

Luminous intensity describes how much light is emitted from a light source in a particular direction, to help us understand the light output at a specific angle.

Luminous intensity is measured using candelas (cd), a particularly important measurement for testing road lighting for legal requirements. The candela rating will be the same at all distances from the light source, at a specific point or angle.

> ILLUMINANCE & LUX

Illuminance, measured using lux, describes the amount of visible light (luminous flux) on a surface area. This is helpful in determining the intensity of light in a particular area.

One lux is equivalent to one lumen per square meter of a surface area.

The lux value changes depending on the distance of the light source from a surface, which is useful in ensuring work areas are sufficiently illuminated, or for interior lighting designs where a consistent light level is desired.

> FOOTCANDLES

Footcandles is an imperial measurement meaning the illuminance has been measured by square feet instead of square metres.

IP stands for Ingress Protection, although sometimes it’s referred to as “International Protection”. IP ratings are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures (like lights) against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt and other things). These ratings are made up of the prefix ‘IP’ and then 2 digits, for example ‘IP68’. Here’s what it means…

What is Kelvin Colour Temperature?

When you’re looking at a white light, sometimes it looks warm and sometimes it looks cooler. This level of warmth and coolness is measured on a scale which is called the Kelvin Scale (K).

COLOUR TEMPERATURE IS MEASURED IN KELVINS

(K)

The scale is from 1,000K to 10,000K, and simply the higher the number, the cooler the light. So the warmer a light is the redder the colour, and the cooler it is, the more blue it is in colour.

In the automotive industry, lighting typically falls somewhere on a scale from 2000K to 6500K. This table briefly outlines the main range of Kelvin colours:
