The College of Nursing and the OR Nursing Department together coordinated a workshop on Perioperative Nursing Standards on April 25th, 2016, in honour of Mrs. Valliammal Babu’s 24-year contribution to the OR Nursing Department out of her 38 years of service to the institution. This workshop, which sought to enhance the understanding of perioperative care among OR nurses, was awarded eight credit points by the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council.

The workshop was set in motion after the welcome address delivered by Mrs. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, following which Mrs. Valliammal Babu elucidated the central theme of the discussion group, offering her insight into the specific challenges faced by OR nurses. Dr. Mark Ranjan Jesudason, Professor & Head, Colorectal Surgery Unit, Deputy Medical Superintendent and OR Steering Committee Secretary, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, congratulated the team on successfully bringing out a meaningful seminar. Mrs. Sonia Sabu, Associate Professor, OR Nursing Department, and the organising secretary of the workshop, provided an overview of the sessions to follow.

The sessions explored Pre-operative Care, Patient Safety, Postoperative Pain Management, Personnel Safety, Protocols in OR and Practice Standards – each of which was unraveled by eminent speakers from our institution. Fifty eight OR nurses from hospitals in and around Vellore participated actively in the 10 workstations set up for hands-on practice sessions. Their overall post-test score, a noteworthy figure, revealed the effectiveness of the workshop. At the valedictory ceremony, Mrs. Kalaiselvi, Associate Professor from Arun College of Nursing, observer from the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council and the delegates also gave a positive feedback.

At the close of the event, Mrs. Thenmozhi Sunder formally thanked the various people responsible for making the event happen.

World Health Day 2016 Several departments came forward to celebrate World Health Day on April 7th, 2016, which took the form of a one-day health awareness camp this year.

A diverse array of booths lined the campus with displays pertaining to Road Safety Disaster Preparedness, Cancer Prevention, Infection Prevention, Heat Stroke Prevention and Basic Life Support. The stalls were set up at short notice by the departments of Endocrinology, Cardiology, Community Health Nursing, Paediatrics, Head & Neck Surgery, Dental, HICC, Medical Oncology, Dietary, Road Safety, OP Services, Disaster Management, Occupational Health, Chaplaincy and Basic Life Support (CMC Rescue Team). Despite the sweltering heat, the camp remained open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and even featured a puppet show in keeping with the day’s theme!

Occupational Health Week in CMC - Segment II The Occupational Health Week initiative in an educational series, as prepared by the Occupational Health Team of CMC, continues. Following the first part of the Watch Your Back Series in the previous issue of the Newsline, comes the next module on preventing and managing neck pain.

World Asthma Day 2016 The Department of Pulmonary Medicine, in recognition of World Asthma Day, put together an Asthma Awareness Camp on May 3rd, 2016.

Dr. D. J. Christopher, Head, Pulmonary Medicine, relativised the magnitude of the disease: “Asthma is a chronic, non-communicable, lung disease, that affects 334 million people globally – a number greater than the entire population of the United States. Even this is believed to be an underestimate. It is common in adults and children, high-income countries and low, and substantially limits physical activity of the individual it affects.

The department has seen a conspicuous rise in the number of asthmatics and this number continues to climb.”

The initiative was arranged by Dr. Jebin Roger S, Assistant Professor, Pulmonary Medicine, who put into perspective the significance of promoting awareness about Asthma: “Asthma, if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately, can lead to exacerbations such as poor quality of life, under-productivity and in the long run, airway remodeling, which can subsequently lead to COPD and death. The stigma attached to Asthma is an added impediment that discourages the use of effective medicines such as inhaled corticosteroids, which can dramatically improve symptoms.”

Mrs. Beulah Premkumar, Head, Medical and Surgical Nursing, declared the event open, which comprised a screening camp attended by 109 patients. Spirometry was performed on 91 patients, around 40 of whom gave an abnormal test. 70 patients in all, were newly diagnosed with Asthma, with or without other allergies; 12 patients with only allergic rhinitis. All of them were educated about the disease and were counseled about future care.

Founder's Day Staff Football Tournament Dr. Anna Pulimood, Vice-Principal (HR) was the chief guest and distributed the prizes to the winners of the Staff Football Tournament for the year 2015-16 on April 28th, 2016.

Retirements Mr. M. Gurunathan, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Purchase Department, retired on April 24th, 2016, after 36 years of service to the institution. His elder son, Mr. Paulraj, is a Clerk-Typist at the Principal's Office and his younger son, Mr. Vimalraj, has completed B.Sc. (Maths) from Voorhees College, Vellore.

Mr. K. Joseph Johnson, Sr. Electrician Gr.II, Mechanical Engineering Department, retired on April 30th, 2016, after almost 24 years of service to the institution. His wife, Mrs. Joy Flora works as Staff Gr.II Assistant Engineer in the Electronics Department. His eldest daughter, Ms. Jayalidia, is doing her MPH course in TISS, Mumbai, while his second daughter, Dr. Julia Samson, is selected for undergoing M.D. (Anaesthesia) at our institution and his youngest daughter, Dr. Asha Chrysolyte, is fulfilling her Sponsorship bond at Herbertpur Mission Hospital, Dehradun.

CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.

Admissions Open for M.Phil. in Hospital and Health Systems Management M. Phil. in Hospital and Health Systems Management (HHSM) is a four-semester programme conducted as a collaboration between Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and Bombay Hospital, Mumbai. BITS, Pilani is an all-India Institute for higher education and operates several other collaborative programmes with many industries across the country directed towards their HRD needs.

Eligibility: Employed professionals in the healthcare industry, having an M.B.B.S. degree or any Integrated First Degree of BITS or its equivalent, with at least one year post-qualification work experience and sponsored by their employers.

Programme Structure: This programme is conducted in collaboration with Christian Medical College, Vellore and Bombay Hospital, Mumbai. Contact classes for four weeks are held at Vellore / Mumbai during the first semester, and at Pilani, during the second semester. The viva-voce for dissertation in the final semester would be held at BITS, Pilani. The travel, boarding and lodging expenses for attending the contact sessions and viva-voce will have to be borne by the candidate.
