hristmas season offers a great opportunity and a special time of the year for the staff and students of CMC to raise funds to bless disadvantaged people in Vellore. The Christmas Cheer Carnival, a fundraising event was organised on December 02, 2017 at the Hospital campus. Dr. J.V. Peter, Director and Dr. Sunil Chandy, Former Director, inaugurated the stalls and Mr. Sunny Kuruvilla, Acting Head, Materials Department welcomed the gathering. Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, Mr. Ebinezar Sundarraj, General Superintendent,
Dr. Rohit Amritanand, Deputy Medical Superintendent and Dr. Simon Pavamani, Vice-Principal graced the occasion. The evening turned out to be fun-filled with food stalls,games and entertainment by Nursing Students. The total collection at the carnival was about Rs.1,700,000 which would benefit 3000 beneficiaries across 45 homes for the disadvantaged in and around Vellore.

Nursing Services received ‘Nursing Excellence’ Certification by NABH et another accolade to the Institution was obtained by the nursing services, by receiving the ‘Nursing Excellence’ certification by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals. The NABH Nursing Excellence Standards focuses on various professional, administrative and governance aspects namely Nursing Resource Management (NRM), Nursing Care of Patient (NCP), Management of Medication (MOM), Education, Communication and Guidance (ECG), Infection Control Practices (ICP), Empowerment and Governance (EG), and Nursing
Quality Indicators (NQI). It comprised of a total of 48 standards with 216 objective elements incorporated within these standards. The Nursing Services went through a rigorous process to gear up for the NABH inspection with the efforts of various nursing heads and Department Quality Managers. The inspection was carried out by three NABH primary assessors from 24 th to 26th of June 2017. After the inspection, the assessors duly acknowledged the knowledge, skills, confidence and assertiveness of nurses and the excellent services of specialist nurses. A total of 25
non-conformances were mentioned which were rechecked and closed. The NABH announced the th certification on the 15 of November 2017 and the certification will be valid th till 14 November, 2019. 1

Mrs. Beulah Premkumar Retires Mrs. Beulah Premkumar, Professor and Head, Department of Medical Surgical Speciality Nursing retired after 37 years of dedicated service to CMC. She joined the B.Sc. Nursing programme at College of Nursing, Christian Medical College, Vellore in the year 1975. In 1980 she joined CMC as a staff nurse and in 1984 became a Professor. She has made immense contributions to the betterment of patient care in multiple areas. She has taken a lot of initiative to improve patient care through introducing standard protocols for patient care,regular CNE and training programmes for nurses. As a teacher, her sincere efforts were well appreciated by her students. She has been a resource person for many conferences, workshops and committees; played an important role in improving quality of Education in Schools of Nursing under the Board of Nursing Education, South India Board of Education, NL CMAI. She has written a Hand Book for Nurses in India titled "One hundred years of nursing education at CMC,Vellore: A reflection by Beulah Premkumar". She has prepared a DVD on “Endeavoring towards excellence in Nursing for Quality Nursing Service – 2013” and written a chapter on `Nursing Management on Respiratory Diseases and Disorders’ in the text book of Medical Surgical Nursing. Her contributions towards revising the clinical nursing manual of CMC and GNM syllabus were well appreciated. Her husband Mr. Premkumar is a retired Social worker. Their daughter Adeline is a staff nurse in the Medical ward and son, Abraham is pursuing bachelor’s degree course in Speech Therapy at CMC. CMC community is thankful for Mrs. Beulah’s committed work and wishes her a blessed retired life. Who is My Neighbour? Luke 10:25-37 Mr. Moorthy (name changed) about 50 years of age was found on the street just outside the UdhavumUllangal NGO Office at Mandi street Vellore. Mr. Chandrasekar the founder of UdhavumUllangal, renowned for his social service in the Vellore region, informed the Low Cost Effective Care Unit about MrMoorthy. The LCECU social workers and a team from Department of Psychiatry suggested a plan for his rehabilitation, free medication and to move him to the Home for Psycho-Social Rehabilitation of the Mentally ill,Tirupattur. The team supervised his food and medication on a daily basis except on Sundays when, Mr. Raman, a food vendor at the old bus stand would undertake the supervision. He was shifted to Tirupattur on November 13 and showed tremendous improvement culminating with a visit from his family. The CMC team is privileged to have been a Good Samaritan to Moorthy in collaboration with UdhavumUllangal and the Home in Tirupattur.
National conference on “Engage Disability” th

The 2nd National conference on “Engage Disability”was held from 14 - 16 November, 2017 at Laity Institute for Transformation Education (LITE), Chennai with representations from CSI Diocese of Madras, CSI Seva, WVI, CHAI, NCCI, TLM, EHA, CMC Vellore, Tear fund, Equip India, Bible colleges and various NGO’s and programmes working on disability. Dr. Judy John, Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, CMC, Vellore functions as one of the members of the Engage Disability administrative committee.Twelve staff from different departments participated in the conference and presented posters depicting the theme. Dr. Achamma Chandy, faculty of Bio-ethics Department, CMC Vellore presented The Biblical Approach to Bioethics and Disability in one of the breakout sessions. The Keynote addresses and the presentations motivated delegates to bring transformation in the approach towards engaging persons with disability.

Workshop on Completing Systematic Reviews was organized by the Cochrane South Asia Centre from 27 th November to 1 st December, 2017. The sessions were attended by four Professors and two Readers from various institutions in the country. Dr. Sudipta Dhar, Dr. Amit Dutta & Dr. Ashish Goel, Dr. Suneel & Dr. Subha, Dr. ShiviKatri and Dr. Puneet Guprt were working on the following topics respectively, “Efficacy of thalidomide in management of bleeding from gastrointestinal angiodysplasia”, “Nasogastric versus nasojejunal tube feeding for severe acute pancreatitis”, “Effect of preoperative corticosteroids in patients with symptomatic pulpitis on post-operative pain after single visit root canal therapy – A systematic review”, “Adjunctive systemic antimicrobials for the non-surgical treatment of chronic aggressive periodontitis” and “Home based chemical bleaching of teeth in adults”. The sessions were lead by Professor 2 PrathapTharyan, Director of the Cochrane South Asia along with Mr. Richard Kirubakaran, Biostatistician.
Inauguration of 'Nurses Training in Emergency Care' The Office of the Nursing Superintendent in collaboration with the health officials of the Government of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the ‘Nurses training in th emergency care’ on 27 of November to train nurses in dealing with trauma and non-trauma emergencies under the ‘Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative’ (TAEI). The programme began with a prayer by Mr. Paul Ravikumar followed by welcome address by Mrs. Florence Segaran, the Deputy Nursing Superintendent and introduction to the training workshop by Dr. Premila Lee, the Nursing Superintendent. Dr. Rakesh, representative of the Deputy Director of Health Services, Vellore District congratulated the institution for taking the initiative to train the nurses to offer better care for the victims of road traffic injuries. Dr. Shanthi, the Joint Director of Health Services Vellore, Dr. Thirumal Babu, Medical Superintendent and representative of the Dean,Vellore Medical College, Ms. Shoba, the State Programme Manager of TAEI spoke about the importance of training nurses to reduce the mortality related to trauma and other emergencies. They jointly commended on the dynamic leadership of Dr. Darez Ahmed, IAS, the Mission Director of National Health Mission and Commissioner for Trauma care and Maternal & Child Care. At the valedictory ceremony Dr. J.V. Peter, Director, CMC spoke about the future of this collaboration and its positive impact on health care. Benediction and closing prayer were offered by Mrs. Ruma Nayak, the Deputy Nursing Superintendent.
Retirement Mr. V. Meshak, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Department of Pharmacy retired on 5th December, 2017 after 33 years of service to the institution. He has three sons Mr. Vasantha Kumar, Mr. Shantha Kumar who is a Hospital Attendant in ‘A’ Block, Mr. Vinoth Kumar and a daughter Ms.Rajasulochana. CMC community is thankful for his years of dedicated service and wishes him a blessed retirement.
