hristmas Greetings in the wonderful name of the everlasting Lord Jesus Christ.

It gives us immense joy to celebrate the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who came from heaven to earth to be with us as 'Immanuel', to dwell in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ was born to overcome evil and, to dwell amongst His people. The world we live in is in a constant state of change, some good and some bad.

Often the changing scenarios bring forth restlessness, uncertainties, fear and challenges in our day to day life.

Even when we are tossed through the most unbearable scenarios, God's ever abiding presence is constant through His Son Jesus Christ who is among us and within us.

name Immanuel signifies deliverance of God’s people, divine hope, God’s grace, and God’s faithfulness in the midst of hopelessness and barren desolateness. This God is for us!

He wants to save us! His grace, His saving power, His deliverance, His act of redemption is in the midst of us today through His Son! Indeed He is Immanuel, which means God is ever close to us. God is constantly near His people. He is so near that He knows our inner most thoughts, and what we go through, be it sorrow, joy or happines. He knows us within and without from our flesh to our bones. Though sinful, God did not abandon this human race which is disobedient and not worthy of His love and protection. Why he continued to love and restore us is beyond our understanding. But we are His children, and He has promised to remain with us till the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). What a glorious truth we have in the name Immanuel - God with us.

God did not keep himself far off in Heaven instead chose to live among the sheep of his flock, his people. This is well expressed in John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus’ assurance to his disciples can be seen in his promise, “I will come back and take you to be with Wish you all a joyful Christmas and me that you also may be where I am” a blessed New Year 2018!

Paediatric Nephrology Sub-Speciality Celebrates its First Renal Transplant The first successful Renal Transplant of 10 year old Galli Lakshmi Bhavani was performed by the Paediatric Nephrology team together with teams from Urology and Nephrology. International Society of Nephrology sponsored Sister Renal Centre Programme supported this venture and helped the Paediatric Nephrology sub-division to develop as a centre focusing primarily on Paediatric transplant.

This 3 tiered programme of 2 years was initiated in 2012 partnering with the Pediatric Nephrology division at David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA, USA as the Supporting centre and the Department of Paediatric Nephrology as the Emerging centre. A team from our institution was provided training for 4 to 12 weeks. The institution is greatly indebted to Dr. Isidro B Salusky, the Paediatric Nephrology Division of UCLA, Pediatric Anaesthesia team, the PICU team both medical and nursing as well as the Nursing department for having supported this transplant.

Continuing Medical Education in General Surgery The Professor A. S. Fenn Continuing Medical Education in General Surgery was conducted from 30th November to 2nd December, 2017.

The highlight of the event was the Dr. John S. Carman oration that was delivered by Dr. V. Rajshekhar, Professor of Neurosurgery on “Widening the Circle of Service: The Gift of Academic Surgery”. He stressed the role of mentorship and research in widening our influence in the medical sphere. As part of the CME, the third edition of “The Cutting Edge-Journal of the Division of Surgery” was released followed by the Dr. Prakash Khanduri quiz for the second year post graduates for which the winners were Dr. Sasank from CMC, Vellore and Dr. Gopinath M. from Tirunelveli Medical College. The CME was credited with a total of 25 points (category 3) by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR University.

Perioperative Nurses' Week Observed The Perioperative Nurses’ Week was held between 12th& 18th November, 2017 on the theme “Safety in our hands. Our Patients. Ourselves”. The exemplary work of the OR Nurses was acknowledged. To create awareness among the public regarding patient safety in the theaters and the availability of various surgical modalities for common disorders, various stalls were put up.

They were inaugurated by Ms.Valliammal Babu, Retired Professor and head of OR Nursing Department. Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean College of Nursing, Dr. Abhay Ghahukamble, Deputy MS (OR), Dr. Sajan Philip, HOD Anaesthesiology, Dr. Shirley David, Head of Medical Nursing and former head of OR. The celebration also included quiz, essay, poster and slogan competitions. The weeklong celebration refreshed the knowledge, renewed team spirit and re-ignited the motto of the institution among the OR nurses.

Mrs. Anbu S. Kumar Retires

She is well known for her patient centered approach which has led to effective and quality patient care in her department. As a teacher she is gentle yet firm and has imparted valuable lessons to all her students. Mrs. Anbu has served in many leadership positions in various committees. She has always been a constant support for the junior staff encouraging them to take up leadership roles in nursing education and service. In all aspects she has diligently upheld the ethos and values of the institution. Mrs. Anbu Kumar’s husband Mr. Surendra Kumar is a retired accountant from CMC. Their daughter Mrs. Cristobel is an alumnus of college of Nursing and is living now in Chennai with her husband and two children.

Mrs. Anbu S.kumar, Professor and Head of Medical Surgical Nursing Speciality-III retired after 39 years of service to the institution. She was born in Thirunelveli to parents who were teachers in Mission Schools. In the year 1975 she joined Diploma Nursing went on to complete her PBBSc Nursing in 1986 and subsequently M.Sc. Nursing in 1993. She started her career as a staff nurse, worked in various wards and moved on to become the Head of the Department of speciality II (block).

The CMC community wishes her a peaceful retirement and is very thankful for her dedicated service to the 2 institution.

2 nd Annual Conference in Internal Medicine The Department of Medicine conducted the second Annual Medicine CME on the topic “Acutely ill medical patients” from 7th to 9th December. The inaugural function was attended by Dr. J.V. Peter, Director, Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Principal, Dr. O.C. Abraham, Head of Department and Dr. M.S. Seshadri, former Head of Surgery.

The Vote of thanks was delivered by organizing Secretary Dr. Ramya. The participants had an informative insight during the scientific session organized by scientific chairman Dr. Sowmya Sathyendra, followed by presentations from Dr. Solomon Chellaiah and Dr. Pragya Jiwanmall during the Mission hospital discussion. The participants had the opportunity to interact with retired faculty Dr.Alka Ganesh, Dr. Kurien Thomas, Dr. Dilip Mathai and Dr. George John on various academic topics. The workshop hosted an e-poster competition and the best poster prize went to Dr. John Titus for his presentation on “Diabetic Ketoacidosis”.

Events from MCI Nodal Centre Medical Education Department The MCI Nodal centre for National Faculty Development, CMC Vellore conducted the 10 th MCI Revised Basic Course workshop from 5 th–7 th December 2017 followed by 7th One Day Sensitization Programme for Attitude and Communication Module (AT-COM) on 8 th December 2017. The programme aimed to train the trainers to capacitate medical educators of the 21 affiliated medical colleges under the MCI –Nodal Centre. This programme is credited with CME Credit hours from Tamilnadu Medical Council.

• The 'World Health Organization' has designated the College of Nursing, as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development (WHO CC No.IND-138) for a period of four years (2017 to 2021).

• Dr. Vikram Mathews (1985), Professor and Head of the Department of Haematology was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award on December 9, 2017 by the Indo-American Cancer Association for his outstanding contributions to Haematology and was also awarded the Sun Pharma Research Award for the year 2016 in the field of “Medical Sciences - Medical Research”.

• Dr. R.V. Shaji, Professor, Department of Haematology has been awarded the Wellcome Trust / DBT India Alliance Senior Fellowship for the year 2017 for the project entitled “Understanding the molecular basis of Phenotypic Heterogeneity in Fanconi Anaemia”.

• Dr. Kulkarni Uday Prakash, Assistant Professor, Department of Haematology has been recommended to be awarded for a Wellcome Trust / DBT India Alliance Early Career Fellowship for the year 2017 for the project entitled “Evaluation of efficacy of ex-vivo expanded and optimized natural killer cells as an adjunct to allogeneic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of de novo acute myeloid leukaemia”.

• The following participants won prizes at “The 13 th Annual Meeting of Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research - 2017” PGIMER, Chandigarh which was held from 10th to 12th November, 2017: Dr. Senthilraja won the 1st prize in oral presentation titled “Fibrous Dysplasia of Bone: Experience from a centre in Southern India”.

Dr. Kripa Elizabeth Cherian won the 2nd prize in poster presentation titled “Influence of different ethnicity based databases on diagnosis of osteoporosis - A cross sectional study in South Indian postmenopausal women” and 2nd prize in quiz competition.

• Dr. Nufina T.A., Final year PG Registrar from the Department of Pathology, won the First Prize in APCON Online Quiz session at the 66th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (APCON 2017) held on 10 th December, 2017 at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

• Mr. K. Sridhar form the Department of Clinical Biochemistry won the best poster award at the 7 th CME conducted by the Tata Memorial Hospital at Mumbai on the 24th and 25th of November, 2017.

• Dr. Ananth P. Abraham, Postgraduate Resident in Neurosurgery won the NSI MCQ award at the 66th Annual Conference of the Neurological Society of India (NSICON) held from 30th November to 3rd December, 2017 at Nagpur.

Radhakrishnan won the Rekha Memorial Tanker award for "Individualised dialysate sodium prescription in hemodialysis - results from a prospective interventional trial".

Dr. Varun Agrawal won first prize in Oral Presentation titled "The temporal profile; risk factors and outcome of catheter associated blood stream infection (CABSI) with temporary uncuffed catheters (tucs) in adult incident 3 Continued on Page 4 haemodialysis patients".

Dr. Anjali Mohapatra won second prize for Oro-poster presentation for "The evolution of Paediatric and Adolescent Renal Transplantation in India: twenty five years at a pioneering tertiary centre in South India".

Dr. Santosh Varughese won second prize in poster presentation for "Percutaneous repositioning of peritoneal dialysis catheter accidentally placed in the pre-peritoneal subcutaneous space leaving the tunnel and exit-site intact - a novel idea" and for other poster "Bedside peritoneal dialysis catheter repositioning - case series of a novel technique".

Retirement Mrs.Gracy Abraham, Staff Nurse Gr.I retired on the 30th of November 2017 after 20 years of selfless service to the institution. Her husband Mr.Abraham K. Mathai, is a retired Sr. Gr. Staff Nurse from Neuro ICU. They have two children, Mr. Ajith Abraham and Mrs. Annet Merin.
