The Allied Health Sciences Baccalaureate Service was held on November 22, 2015, at the Scudder Auditorium, College Campus. The solemn service was well attended by the graduates, parents, staff and students. Mr. R.P. Durai Jasper, Public Relations Officer, CMC, Vellore gave an inspiring message.

The Allied Health Sciences Graduation Ceremony was held at Scudder Auditorium on November 23, 2015.

Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, Director-cum-Vice Chancellor, SVIMS, Tirupati, addressed the 217 graduates from 44 different courses.

He highlighted the need and demand of Allied Health professionals in the various fields of the health care sector in India and emphasized their role in transforming the current “siloed-care” into “seamless care”. He applauded CMC for its aspiration to standardize competency based curricula and for playing a lead role in addressing the need-gap of dearth of qualified teachers. He also encouraged graduates to develop empathy and compassion as the foremost qualities, as they deploy the skills acquired in CMC. He ended the convocation address by emphasizing the role of humility in becoming lifelong learners and in providing patient centered care as a part of a multidisciplinary team.

The colourful, yet solemn function was followed by an excellent dinner in spite of heavy rain. The success of the Baccalaureate Service and Graduation Ceremony was due to the whole hearted support and effort of all the Allied Health Sciences Faculty and students.

5 4 TH NA TIONAL PHARMA CY WEEK 20 15 NATIONAL PHARMACY 2015 The Department of Pharmacy organized the 54 th National Pharmacy Week from November 15 to 21, 2015. The theme for this year was “Responsible use of Antibiotics Saves Lives�.

The main focus of the celebration was to highlight the importance of pharmacy in health and disease, to increase awareness about safe and rationale use of Antibiotics, importance of proper storage etc.

In commemoration with this, various competitions were organized during the week that included Poster design, Slogan writing (Tamil and English), Essay writing (Tamil and English) and Quiz programme for health care professionals, public and patients. Approximately 250 persons participated in the above events.

An exhibition was held for the benefit of the public, patients and health care workers to create awareness about safe and rationale use of antibiotics and other medications. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Baskara Santharuban, Asst. Director, Drugs Control Office, Vellore Zone and Drugs Inspectors Mrs. Kalaiselvi, Ms. Mahalakshmi, Mr. Ketharinathan, Mrs. Deivanai and Ms. Saranya graced the occasion.

The Acting Director, Dr. Raju Titus Chacko and the Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ebor Jacob offered their felicitations on the occasion.

The Pharmacy Week celebrations concluded with the valedictory function held on November 21, 2015 and the certificates and prizes were given to the winners.

RETIREMENT Mrs. Meeramma, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant Gr.I, 'Q' Block retired on November 27, 2015 after 40 years of service to the institution. She has two sons and two daughters.

Sons, Mr. Yesuraja, Mr. Ooshan and daughter, Mrs. Sudha are working as Hospital Housekeeping Attendants in CMC. CMC thanks her for her many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes her a blessed retired life.

Kunnath W ORLD DIABETES D AY 20 15 DA 2015 In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2015, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism organized a public exhibition and Poster competition themed “Healthy Eating in Diabetes� on November 20, 2015 in the premises of ISSCC building. With the anticipated increase in people developing diabetes to epidemic proportions in India, it is essential to improve the awareness of not only the patients but also their family and friends The exhibition was started with a word of prayer by Rev. Dr. T. Arul Dhas and inaugurated by Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, CMC, Vellore. The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy, Prosthetic and Orthotic Services and Dietary along with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism put up stalls that displayed health promotional banners and posters to generate awareness on diabetes and its complications and preventive measures. Free blood tests were done to detect new diabetics and also free foot examination was offered for individuals with diabetes.

The Posters were judged by a panel of 3 judges including Dr. Rekha Pai, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, Mrs. Regina Xavier, Professor and Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent and Dr. Suceena Alexander, Associate Professor, Department of Nephrology. The first prize went to Ms. Sherin Thomas, N2 Ward, the second prize to Mr. Dinakaran, Receptionist (OPD) and the third prize was shared by Ms. Bridget Mathew, Staff Nurse in KN Ward and Ms. S. Esther, Staff Nurse in MTS-IV ward.

The consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. Deeksha, St. John's College of Nursing, Adukkumparai, Ms. L. Lishma Mathew, 2nd year student in B.Sc. Nursing, Ms. Menaka, Staff Nurse, SICU and Ms. A. Ida Emily, Staff Nurse, I Ward.

BOOK MELA A T CMC AT The Department of Library Services organized a 'Book Mela' for 4 days from 23rd - 26th of November, 2015 at C.K.Job Hall, Paul Brand Building in connection with the Golden Jubilee of the Department.

The fair was started with an opening prayer by Mr. R. Senthil Kumar, Senior Librarian. Dr. V. Newton, Chief Librarian and Head of the Department welcomed the gathering and explained the purpose of the fair. Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal appreciated the efforts and the activities of the Department of Library Services and declared it open.

Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, Vice-Principal, Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan, Senior Librarian and organizing Secretary of the fair, Dr. Azariah Jebakumar, Senior Librarian, other library staff members, well wishers were present during the occasion. Prominent publishers in the field of Medicine, Allied Health Sciences and others displayed their publications. The fair was opened to all in the city. There was an overwhelming response for the fair and it was attended by the neighbouring institutions as well.

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES Christian Medical College encourages its staff and students to be involved in various activities in the campuses to maintain a healthy life style. One of the initiatives is Zumba, a dance based fitness programme. Zumba is a fresh take on the monotony of traditional aerobics classes. It combines Latin-flavoured music and traditional dance moves from salsa, tango and merengue with aerobics to keep people moving and dancing while their body is toning and sculpting. A Zumba workout burns anywhere from 800 to 1,000 calories.

Zumba classes are conducted in both the Hospital and College campuses. Around 50 - 60 staff and students are participating in this programme. These classes are typically about an hour long and are taught by Mr. Platinie who is a licensed Zumba Fitness instructor. There are many different types of classes for different levels of age and exertion and therefore anyone from age 0 to 100 can participate in this form of exercise. Zumba classes are very energetic and exciting, it doesn’t feel like exercise and it isn’t quite as intimidating as other exercises.
